Karmageddon for the Rich and Shameless: Pasión y Poder 4/8/16

I have always loved the concept of poetic justice, of people getting the fate they deserve. This does not often happen among those who can buy their way out of it or get someone else to do it for them. Many – if not most – who can do this have no conscience about it. Few feel any regret for their actions or remorse for the consequences; most that do are too late to do more than pick up the pieces.

Human crime is not limited to things subject to legal judgment. Many crimes are social, familial, or both. Most of these are behind closed doors and at least half will hurt the perpetrator as much as the victim. All they can do at that point is close ranks to save face if they can manage to avoid the paparrazzi who – for this crowd – is Dante's Inferno. – D.D.

Eladio Gómez-Luna / Fernando Colunga

Suspected of murder in the death of his mentor. Guilty of business dishonesty including corporate espionage; long-term domestic abuse (emotional, intellectual, and physical), marital rape, unlawful detainment, multiple adulteries, long-term deception regarding illegitimate son, animal abuse (releasing canaries from their cage amounts to a death sentence for them), corrupt influence to delay a prison release, feeding rumors and lies to the gutter press to libel GM and Arturo, aggravated assault (multiple counts); refusal to acknowledge illegitimate son, concealment of grandchild, and inability to knot his tie neatly or symmetrically.

Humberto Vallardo / Luis Bayardo

Guilty of massive misogyny, domestic abuse, selling daughter to the highest bidder, conspiring with son-in-law to escalate abuse, emotional abuse of less immediate relatives, attempting to control surviving daughter's life post-divorce, blackmail (both literal and emotional), and ridiculous sense of entitlement.

Erick Montenegro / Alejandro Nones

Guilty of misogyny, domestic abuse (emotional, mental, and physical), adultery (Monserrat), rape (Consuelo), kidnapping (own son), selling out GM with an attempt to frame Regina, attempted murder (Franco), bearing false witness (Miguel), murder (Monserrat), grand larceny (Nina's jewelry and ransom money), and garden-variety arrogance.

Franco Gómez-Luna Herrera / Danilo Carrera

Guilty of envy (David), greed (including an unsuccessful attempt at selling out GLA), infidelity and later adultery (with Marintia), attempted murder (Erick), corporate espionage, character assassination (Julia, Arturo), embezzlement with intent of ultimate hostile takeover (GLA), grand larceny (shoe factory inherited by Gabriela), emotional abuse (Caridad and now Gabriela), and thinking he is All That and a Bag of Chips.

Marintia Hernández / Daniela Fridman

Guilty of corporate espionage, infidelity and later adultery (with Franco), pregnancy entrapment, conspiracy to commit embezzlement/corporate sabotage, and unsuccessful seduction attempts (Eladio).

Daniela Montenegro / Irina Baeva

Guilty of vanity, academic truancy, substance abuse, destructive one-upwomanship games with Regina (as in stealing her boyfriends), bribing medical lab for a false negative drug test result, guilt-tripping parents (mostly with lies), aiding and abetting Erick's escape to Puerto Vallarta, denying she has any issues, and thinking she is hotter than habanero salsa.

Caridad Herrera / Isabella Camil

Note: She has paid for the homicide of her husband which was likely in defense of Franco, so this is not under consideration here.  We may, however, consider whether to punish her for the original pregnancy entrapment.

Guilty of gross deception (along with Eladio) with regard to Franco's secret child and hypocrisy in relating to Gabriela and Julia while also attempting to tempt Eladio. Also guilty of self-delusion regarding her attempt at becoming Julia.

Peter Ashmore / Fabián Pizzorno

Guilty of unethical business practices, taking sexual advantage of a much younger woman with issues (Daniela) and supplying drugs to her, and giving gringos a bad name.

Ángeles / Pilar Escalante

Guilty of selling corporate secrets to the competition, conspiracy in embezzlement and hostile takeover, and having no discernible personality to criticize.

Marcos / Germán Gutiérrez

Guilty of aiding and abetting embezzlement to facilitate a hostile takeover, cooking the books of stolen asset (Gabriela's inheritance), and being as pathetic as Leo Bloom.

Nina Perez de Montenegro / Marlene Favela

Guilty of greed, vanity, hypocrisy, mental cruelty toward daughter (Regina), and more intense mental cruelty toward stepson (Miguel) and daughter-in-law (Consuelo); conspiring with son (Erick) to unfairly acquire more shares of GM, buying judicial influence in the custody of Consuelo's baby, nabling Erick's and Daniela's attitudes of entitlement and Daniela's avoidance of mental health care (prior to current situation), enabling Erick's temporary escape to Puerto Vallarta, blatant favoritism of Daniela over Regina, outmoded thinking regarding inheritance, toxic jealousy while married to Arturo, unjustified snobbery, tacky Mean Girl-bullying of Julia in front of witnesses, and poor fashion judgment.

Arturo Montenegro / Jorge Salinas

Guilty of bribing witness to change his statement re Erick on the night of Monserrat's murder, of being essentially an absentee father, of obsessive behavior with Julia (including the backstage deal with Humberto), of stooping to Ashmore's level to secure the deal, of thinking that there is a mutually exclusive situation regarding himself/Julia vs David/Regina, and of living in the past (his own).

Comments:
May I add to Arturo's list:

Gaslighting Nina (and his children) by insisting that she was delusional and that he was not pursuing Julia or seeing her secretly and telling Nina that his feelings for Julia played no part in his desire for a divorce

Hiding assets (using the saintly slim cherubs Agustín and Miguel) in order to deprive Nina of her fair share in the divorce

Reneging on his shady deal (essentially a promised bribe) with Ashmore after eliminating Eladio as competition

Conspiring (and bribing) with Humberto to separate Julia from her lawful husband, Eladio

Opening up the opportunity for Erick to kidnap his own child and rape Coni by suborning false testimony keeping Erick out of jail

Insisting on going forward with the Mayan Riviera project in spite of its effect on the environment (destroying wetlands)

Circulating a false story (probably) about Eladio's part in Smith's demise

And maybe there should be accounting by Miguel and Agustín for conspiring with Arturo to defraud Nina, stalking and attempting to seduce married women (in Miguel's case his brother's spouse and in Agustín's someone of an inappropriate age), and Miguel for assault and attempted murder (he told Agustín that he wished that he had killed Erick) of his brother.

You're welcome,

Carlos

We only have about 3 weeks left, so now was as good a time as any. Some of us may have changed our minds about what we want to see happen in this series while others are standing pat (as they say in poker). There are probably more crimes to come, especially from Ape Child and Francofurter, but in terms of civil law these two have the worst rap sheets of crimes we have seen.

I've left Caridad off the list, but if anyone feels very strongly about it I will add her tomorrow. Since we have raised the issue of whether Mateo is Franco's child, this raises issues about what happens to him at the end of the tale.

UA,

Caridad is much more deceitful than Nina... I say put both her and Julia on the list.

Carlos

I disagree, but I will add Caridad to the list later or tomorrow. She has some culpability for Franco and Marintia, but I don't think he's telling her anything about his takeover plans.

I still think the lesser of the two evils (Eladio & Arturo) is Eladio. My reasoning for this and I may get boos, I think eladio has made an honest effort to try and....how should I put this... Im lookin at him getting counciling and coming to terms with himself and the rotten choices hes made in his marriage, business, how he treated his son (Im talkin about david) did he really believe that david wasn't his or was he just jealous and wanted to hurt juls? Yes. And even tho hes still walkin on the edge of the cliff with some things (I think he just adknowledged franco few days back but not the grand son) he still has a ways to go. But hes trying. Arturo thinks hes just fighting to regain his past. Now he really needs some serious counciling. And he need to "Let it go, Let it go, Let it go". That ship has sailed, as a matter of fact he sunk it when he knocked up miguel's moma while engaged to juls.

And theres 3 weeks left. Theres manipulation up the wazoo goin on here. I hate that hummy, and artty, franco are doin that to juls. And because of it she had to give her son a well deservef slap last nite. The manipulaters are causing momas to slap their mealy mouth judgemental disrespecting kids. Well that take on some stuff. Wjo knowd I might change my thinkin if what I think is coming comes. I hope it don"t. Ok bye for now.

Carlos,You are so funny. Tell us how you REALLY feel about Art.

♥Susanlynn,

Actually, I'm warming toward him.

Carlos

Daniela also helped Erick escape to Puerto Vallarta. I've already said how I really feel about her, she's evil and guilty of a lot of the same crimes as Nina.

This blog is showing up in the page where Hotel de los Secretos is supposed to be. I just am not finding an update for Hotel de los Secretos.

UA,

I just noticed that you left out Nina's one true crime for which she could be prosecuted... influencing the judge to favor Erick in the custody battle.

Carlos

Carlos..Art is on my last nerve. He makes me feel tired. He really should take up golf .

OT....I watched the first episode of season two Outlander last night. Get your drink of choice ready , and get ready for surprises.

Arturo is a hypocrite, the lesser evil is definitely Eladio. I hope the new therapist is a hot lady, must ck the cast list. I can't stand Julia, I even prefer Nina to her.

Do any of you know if there is a way to be notified by e-mail if there are new posts to Caray? I keep checking for the Thurs recap of El Hotel by every means I know

Carlos, Yes I have to agree Arturo's crime list is too short; but for me his biggest crime is simply been an annoying offensive gnat who won't take no for an answer.

I agree with you Nina regarding Eladio. I've said this several times, I think when people make a sincere effort they deserve to have it acknowledged. It doesn't erase the mistakes, they made, but it goes along way in being able to pardon them. Eladio is seeking to better himself, he is not perfect (are any of us?) But the act of going to therapy and being committed to it (I'm looking at you Dani) says so much about his growth as a person. he has a healthier relationship with David now and he's made great strides with Julia and allowing her to find herself and be her own person. He would really make it right if he would just come clean about Mateo and let the chips fall where they may. He thinks he's protecting Gaby from getting hurt but it's the opposite. Still I don't think his intentions are malicious, just very misguided.

Variopinta, I'd take Eladio any day over Arturo who just doesn't seem to me to think he has or ever does anything wrong; and when he does offer up an apology I don't believe him because he's right back to chasing Julia five minutes after. He doesn't care about his kids feelings or the affect his mid life crisis behavior may be having on them. Sure they are grown, but there have been repercussions to his actions and it has affected his family deeply. Still all he can muster up, is a so what. It's the same tired nonsense "Julia you and I love each other, we need to be together the way it always should have been" His kids and Nina were nothing but a road block to his destiny with Julia. Blah blah...what a selfish man.

Urban, thank you.

I don't know how you managed to keep score of all the nefarious deeds in such a detailed, organized and fascinating manner, but you accomplished it. Kudos...

We are all flawed and have many trials and tribulations. But after reading this, I will simply say I consider myself fortunate and blessed that my problems pale in comparison and that I am not in the orbit of any of these characters.

Of everything listed, the canaries tugged at my heart the most. There have been many vulnerable characters here (with obvious disagreement as to who they are), but the abuse of these gentle birds stood out as particularly cold and cruel.

I'm starting to wonder if there will be any satisfying resolution to any of this.

Further, I am not sure I care any longer...

Diana

As soon as I saw the canaries in the opening episode I kept thinking of Macarena's doves in ENDA.

I'll add Caridad to all this tomorrow. I'm just back from a film and I'm beat.

Oh, I forgot about the canaries, Eladio is unforgivable. He was a much better antagonist back the though.

Thanks for another arresting...unforgettable illustration of the theme, UA. You really have a talent for finding stunning shots.

Nothing to say on punishment, just wish all these people would mend their ways.

In relationships, the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse are Criticism, Contempt, Defensiveness and Stonewalling.

We've had countless illustrations of that plus the more serious decisions of corruption, dishonesty, infidelity, physical and emotional abuse, suborning witnesses, drug addiction, financial fraud and killing...whether deliberate or accidental.

The Golden Rule has been around for centuries and while most folks admire it, few practice it. And certainly not in these stories.

At this point, I think most of us just want the carnage to be over...one way or another. And as Carlos would say Next!

Canaries: I am no bird expert, but the caged birds who get loose here in South Florida seem to do pretty well. I'd just think the canaries' instincts would help them survive. I'm not a real big believer in cages for humans OR animals. So don't cry too many tears for them, Eladio may have done them a favor.

Add Julia to the list

She is a wishy-washy, sniveling pain in the tush. Says (she wants nada to do with Arturo) then stupidly puts herself in the position of being with him. Keeps saying she is so confused, for 100 episodes!.

The only character that has had a true arc is Eladio. If he dies it will be a shame.
Nina is starting to have an arc, from money spending wife to savvy businesswoman. And she is coming to truth with the state of her children.
Poor JS as Art has had no arc at all. It's Julia, Julia, Julia all of the time.
Speaking of, I was hoping once Julia was divorced she would really spread her wings and try different things. For all intents and purposes her life hasn't changed. Soo disappointing!

Between Eladio and Art, to whom would we trust with a new bird cage filled with canaries? What if either one of them gets angry because of the loud chirps? Or because he is having a bad day? Who would we trust our birds lives with based on their past actions.

I would trust Arturo, since he would be more likely to just leave the room. His sins are more of omission than commission and his only track record of actual violence is vs. Eladio.

Just added Caridad to the list and realized that there is a unique challenge to Karmageddon discussion for this series: It's that certain characters' fates are more tied together than usual. Caridad, Marintia, and possibly Marcos are tied to Franco and while Marintia has previously seemed aware of who Franco really is and is in on his financial fraud scheme, Caridad is not. Franco talked her into trying to seduce Eladio but knows that she will fail. This was done either to humiliate her or purely as a distraction so she doesn't realize what he is really up to.

Marintia may now be deluding herself as to his future intentions, which (outside of the takeover) we don't really know. We don't know whether he really intends to be a father to little Mateo although he's putting on a good show of that for Marintia's benefit. We don't know if he intends to remain married to Gabriela or whether he will do so only long enough to pull off the hostile takeover.

If Franco succeeds in that scheme and destroys Eladio, rightly or wrongly he loses Gabriela because she has come to care for Eladio. If he is found out before that he could still lose her unless he shoves her away; she is that delusional. If Marintia doesn't flee and take the baby with her she will also fall. Caridad will fall because Eladio will either think she is involved or will realize that her unknown role in all this was to distract him from Franco's actions.

As Delilah63 pointed out, there is also the possibility of a serious curve ball in all this, which is that Mateo isn't really Franco's child. He's too small for us to see any real resemblance and there hasn't been a DNA test. Franco should remember that Eladio avoided a DNA test for 20 years that proved David is his, so it would be supremely ironic if he were to fall for the idea that a baby is his when he's not.

To continue with the above:

Marcos will fall with Franco if he can't cut and run. He is as cowardly as Leo Bloom, and if the phantom company in his name is tied to Franco, he can't and he will either be killed by Franco if he tries to rat him out or he will end up in the slammer.

Forgot to mention her in the above, but Angeles also will fall with Franco, since she has been tied to him through the corporate espionage and now works for him, as she would not be able to get work elsewhere. Prison for however long Mexico sentences people for this.

Marintia is involved in the financial fraud, so she could end up in prison if she doesn't rat him out to Eladio in time, run and take Mateo, or Franco doesn't kill her first. I don't remember whether any of the phantom companies are in her name, but I would think it unlikely.

Whatever happens to Caridad will probably depend on what happens to Franco himself. If he dies she might commit suicide if that doesn't leave Mateo desemparado. This leaves the issue of who would adopt the baby, which could depend on what happens to Gabriela, David, Regina, and anyone connected to them.

Talk about a set of dominoes! This is the most brilliant thing the writers have done with this story.

UA, thank you for your usual brillant recap. Love the pictures and all the finer points you always illustrate.

Need to finish reading all comments, which is frosting on the cake.

The only thing that came to my mind, maybe, its already been mentioned by someone else already. Well, Ashmore got rejected by both Art, Eladio, and Dani,he was not happy. He is vengeful hateful Individual. I totally feel he is disgruntled and maybe he will plot to hurt and payback the Montenegro's and GLA by burning down hotels, or homes. I see it in his beady eyes.

Leticia

No, I don't think that's been mentioned yet. It does sound like he could burn down hotels or projects in progress with the intent of getting Eladio and Arturo at each other's throats

As I see it, Eladio will probably self-destruct. This final rejection from Julia in combination with getting a new shrink could send him off the precipice into arson (the flicking Zippo) or something else.

Urban---I can't thank you enough for your baddies list. I know that a lot of work went into making it.

The comments are just super. How can I add to them? I don't know but after last night, I tend to agree with you 5:3100 PM that Eladio may now be on the self destruct road. A big fire is very possible, I'm not looking forward to it.

the gringo

Erick should end up in prison and in the same cell as Pedro. Whether Franco ends up with them or not will depend on whether the writers want to make the ending ironic or operatic.

If Daniela does anything nasty again to Regina or David, I'm ready to vote her off the planet. If not and let's say Assmore gets to her first let her end up in a psyche ward from a really bad drug trip.

Both of the above will be Nina's punishment. Imagine how the cellblock will behave if she ever visits Ape Child in prison and they look at her a little too long?

I don't like Marintia, but she's a caring mother to Mateo. She knows about Franco's fraud but is not directly involved (no paper trail to her). She's as good a mother as anyone else in this TN (except maybe Consuelo, but she's smarter - at least Marintia looks through the peephole before answering the door!), so I hope the baby stays with her. If Marintia wants to turn on Franco, say in exchange for Eladio $$$helping her, I'm fine with that. Franco has betrayed everyone. Someone betraying him would be sweet.

I like that. Mateo needs his mother and for Gabriela to raise him would be a creepy repeat of Julia's experience.

Although I'd recommend to Marintia to fly -- not run -- back to Argentina.

Ah, everyone's gone so I can now add a couple more to the list:

Regina -- for constantly breaking out in tears at what she perceives as affronts to her when in fact her problems are to a great extent her own doing. And for reenacting the exact same role she just had in La Sombra del Pasado. And for succumbing to the writers' demands by stringing along poor hapless Turtle Boy. Yo, George, are you really the only person in the world who knows your case is hopeless?

Maribel -- Yes, we know you already died, but you deserve a second helping after that maudlinisimo performance way back. Those scenes still come back to me like acid reflux.

Daniel
