Revised on 4/5/16 following episode 118.
OK. All you veterinarians who diagnosed Dani and pointed out how wrong
the addict speculation was? Speak up. Poor Dani. It's a choice girl.
It is maddening how easily a few mislead the many. Humdog is a crafty little turd.
Julia, Julia. It seems her only friend is the Mutt face retard. Lotta help you are Gab.
If she could just have O N E smart friend. She has nobody. And like Gaby she actually
hasn't gotten that whole thinking thing going on yet. Reacts to stimuli like an ameoba.
Great hair though.
Somehow I do not think Erik is a match for Pedro. Pedro is nastier, smarter, and has less to lose.
This could be good but Pedro is 0 for 2. He couldn't kill you with a hand grenade.
I'll bet he will be able to make chimpo sweat at least. Dealing with Pedro will hopefull distract Chimp Boy
in his efforts against Mikey and Connie.
It seems like Hummy is on a winning streak at the casino. Will that last? Will he end up betting it all and losing even his shirt? Can't wait to see how his adventures in Las Vegas ends.
Not much Petra and Obdulio tonight. I know they are filler but I like their scenes together.
Wow, while Arturo is in Las Vegas chasing after Julia and Nina is moping over Arturo, Daniela is having withdrawals and needs the drugs. Poor Lulis having to babysit. And The Ninja Turtle looked funny trying to restrain Daniela.
I'm enjoying watching Pedro getting money out of both Franco and Erick. Let's see how long that lasts. I bet Pedro will end up getting whacked at some point by either one of them. No spoiler just speculation.
Kirby: Eladio's words saying death will stop his obsession with Julia sounds prophetic!
Mauricio: Old Goat Humberto gambling the $$$ away in Vegas!
UA: Didn't know that Purple Lips used to gamble in Vegas!
Yeah I got that. That he will kill everything dear to Arturo, including Julia.
You gotta be moonwalking and turning backflips Steve. :-) Your day in the sun (graveyard) is almost here. Let the carnage begin.
It looked like Art had Humdog on a money leash not allowing him to spend it all.
Soooo. Can anyone here still maintain that Dani is a 'casual, recreational user'?
Yeah Mauricio. He had his flippers full. Hoochie gone haywire. Lulis is like 'Fork, what did I sign up for? HELP'. Wonder how long it will take for Dave to "miraculously" hear about this? FBI CIA and Homeland Security could take some communication pointers from TN grapevines.
Keep in mind that the credits sequences do not always reflect how the story will end.
We haven't seen Assmore for a few episodes so we must factor in anvils for him. Daniela's withdrawal last night demands that. It doesn't necessarily foreshadow death for her, particularly since Erick will either end up dead or in prison for everything he's done. To kill Daniela seems too cruel. Not that she doesn't deserve punishment for her sins, but it would be too cruel to her parents to kill her. Jorge seemed to acquit himself well during this crisis. It takes a cool head to deal with an addict in this situation. I think Lulis should apply for combat pay for this.
Yes, this is the first time we've heard about Nina and Arturo going to Vegas in the past. I wonder where they stayed. Not concerned about Nina gambling; she seems too practical for that to be a fixation for her. Maybe she indulged her James Bond fantasies; I hope some casino requires black tie.
"He verbally applauded himself, happy as though he had stolen the Rheinmaidens' gold" was my favorite of many.
I expected to see a slight flicker or dim spark to indicate Julia had some interest in Arturo. I saw none. Beyond her obvious discomfort at the situation and Arturo's uncomfortable stilted presence, there seemed to be no emotion other than polite interest. Now, I do not believe there is any possibility they will end up together.
If Nina was insincere in what happened with Eladio, she completely fooled me. I thought that for once, she was being open, honest and vulnerable. She loves Arturo although I think what they had is gone from his mind and heart completely.
Pedro may be Erick's undoing. Selfish, self centered and spoiled alone do not make a con artist. Intelligence is also a factor, which Erick lacks. He may have messed with the wrong grafter.
Finally, a lighthearted scene with Petra and Obdulio! Regina and Jorge's appreciative laughter was most welcome. Jorge earned my respect during Dani's meltdown. I wish Lulis would be the friend she needs by coming clean with Nina and Arturo as to what is actually transpiring. I hope Dani gets the help she needs.
Wasn't Franco delighted that Eladio's hopes of reuniting with Julia were crushed?
Many anvils swaying in the breeze, poised and ready to plummet.
Thanks again UA!
Diana
Kirbo, yes, I think Dani's problem is worse than I had hoped. It is my interpretation of the drug testing event that they were two tests done at the same time, one blood( ?) the other hair follicles. Dani paid off the testers on the second. (I could be wrong about this.) I haven't seen her take drugs since the beach, but her addictive meltdown indicates that she isn't able to process disappointment without a crutch. This makes me sad.
The Eladio/ Nina scene was beautiful. We seldom see finely crafted emotions in a novela. The best was when Nina said that she needed to go, she should be at home......where she's always been.
Despite all that she has done (and failed to do), it would be difficult not to be moved...
And yes, it was a beautifully acted scene.
Diana
I don't know what to think of Julia still loving her father after all his abuse and his gambling addiction. If he hadn't bankrupted himself she would have been able to divorce Eladio ages ago and moved on with her life. In recent days (episodes) Humberto has spoken of death, so we all need to wonder whether he will be the first to go. Will he win a big jackpot and die of a heart attack? That doesn't buy back the lost years of Julia's life, but would be interesting irony. If he were to die now his two remaining secrets would not necessarily die with him. Arturo might confess the Vegas thing out of conscience while Franco would likely rat Humberto out as a blackmailer to Gabriela during a fight once she finds out about where the factory went.
Here's hoping that this drug episode with Daniela forces Lulis to rat her out to Arturo. He might flip out that nobody called him right away but he'll get over that.
I think this series could have taught a better lesson about how clever addicts can be at concealing their addiction. Daniela would be the perfect character to have done that with, since she doesn't have to do anything illegal to have the money to acquire drugs. That she is a party animal is an element of her psychology but isn't the driver of her addiction; it's only a gateway.
Eladio backed off from making Arturo's old mistake when he backed off Nina. But he's likely to make another, more permanent one later.
How ironic would that be?
Would she really accept being with not one, but two men who preferred another (the same) woman over her?
Diana
Nina/Eladio was touching. We see a man who is far from perfect and far from guiltless who really truly has some emotion. Is it love (for Julia)? Maybe. Loss of a favorite posession? Maybe too. Does it hurt? Hell yes. Does he know what to do? No. Does he know what his instincts tell him? Yup, and he knows they are wrong.
Wow. We will see if he has the emotional strength to sort it out successfully. I have my fingers crossed. If anybody deserves forgiveness, my vote is for Mr. Eladio. Most of the others, not so much.
Eladio seems to be alone in self awareness. He understands his sins of the past. He understands some things simply can not be 'undone' but can be atoned for. He is truly remorseful. He is tormented, mostly by himself. Probably one of the most painful things is to admit that it is nobody's fault but your own. Good Luck Eladio.
Who loved with a burning passion the same woman more than they did her.
Diana
I also expected Julia to succumb, instead we have a delusional Art cause she gave him nothing.
What is so destructive in her thinking is the whole "I wasn't enough of a woman" thing. She measures her worth in her beauty and sexual talent to the exclusion of all else. She was a wicked stepmother to Miguel, a toxic suegra to Consuelo, a selfish mother with her own children, and somehow in 25 years never managed to acquire any real class.
Or real friends. Fanny pretends to be one, but she is actually a frenemy.
Tofie, I wasn't expecting that this time. Julia needs to get Humberto back home and away from temptation in Vegas. At any other time a sight like the Temple Pool by night could do it, but gambling is just as dangerous an addiction as drugs. She has to worry about whether he would steal from her to gamble.
She is going to be livid when she finds out where the money came from. And this could destroy Gabriela.
Seeing Franco mug behind Dani made me rethink my Die Erick Die decision! What a pathetic human being Franco is!
I am not a gambler (I like to keep what I work for.) I have never been to Las Vegas, but if I went there , I would like to stay at the Bellagio because it has a big collection of decorative glass by Dale Chihuly. I am a big fan of his.
I am very frustrated with these characters...so many wasted lives. Life is too short to pine and fret for someone or something you do not have...too short not to forgive others and yourself for wrongs and disappointments. Enough. Try to find some happiness before it is too late.
BTW, Dani said she was calling her dealer. I don't recall her exact words, but she used the verb "surtir," to supply, which I noticed because it came up when I was recapping. (I don't interpret her craving as physical, but rather as psychological. She is in the habit of dealing with difficult emotions by numbing them, as she told her shrink.)
I like the symbolism of these characters wandering around in the tawdriest, most soulless place on earth. And the old man is like a spoiled little boy on Christmas morning. So funny to see Eladio's fantasy of Julia shlepping a humongous bedsheet through the luxury suite and Arturo mugging like someone in a low-rent porno flick.
Actually, I blame Humberto about the money. He blackmailed Franco and demanded cash. As soon as he did that I knew what he would do with that money if he had the chance. Franco could have refused, but that would have messed up his scheme. And if Humberto gambled it all away -- which can happen in a single night -- tough noogies on him.
Thanks. I always appreciate and enjoy your luxurious richly detailed recaps. You are clearly extremely dedicated.
NovelaMaven,
"It's always fascinating to hear the story told by someone else whose point of view differs from one's own."
I share this thought.
I think that everyone here has been expecting a day of reckoning for Dani or why would the drug theme have been introduced in the first place? I don't think anyone thought or said that Dani's drug experience is just fine. However, I was expecting her to experience an overdose. The way things transpired (shades of Reefer Madness) has about the same verisimilitude as Erick's emergence from his coma but this is what the writers present us with... so be it.
UA,
"Eladio looked like he was falling for her act.
I thought that she was sincere and I'll bet a few others did as well. I thought that both she and Eladio displayed a lot of class in that scene.
The Lovely Linda and I have been to Las Vegas several times and with the exception of our first visit when we went with friends and stayed at the Riviera, we've always stayed at Caesar's Palace. Always lots of fun, but believe me, 3 days is plenty.
Carlos
My mother stayed at Treasure Island (her then-boyfriend's son was an assistant manager, so they stayed there free) and said later she would have preferred to stay at Mirage. I guess she wanted to see Siegfried and Roy and their kitties. I know I would have.
A good friend of mine had a co-worker many years ago who saved $10K for a trip to Vegas (before the current crop of fabulous hotel complexes) and blew all the money in two days, three days before she was supposed to come home. I don't remember if she had to have someone else pay the hotel bill.
Kudos to the cinematographers for such gorgeous footage of Caesars'. I'd be tempted to dress Roman style for it.
I loathe Art more with each passing ep. Dani had what Art thinks is one clean test and since she's in therapy hes back to running off on trips and obsessing over Julia. What a great Dad. Bottom line his ass should be close to home teaming with Nina to see his daughter through this crisis. You dont get cured over night Art.
Miguelito and Con, so glad I'm spared. I find them gross.
Regina please stfu. You did this to yourself.
Franco is in for a huge huge fall. I feel its going to be
Super ugly.
Petra and her galan sound so cute! If anyone deserves happiness it's this gem of a woman.
Why is Eladio so upset? He did divorce Julia, and she is free to go wherever she wishes. Smirking Franco is certainly enjoying Eladio's jealousy.
I don't think Arturo thinks that. He did tell Lulis to keep an eye on Dani. Nobody can watch an addict 24/7, not even a parent. There are Nina, Regina, Jorge, Lulis, David, Petra, and Eladio. However, the doctor on the house call was right in saying that Dani needs to be in residential rehab and the problem is that since she isn't a minor she can refuse with legal impunity. As I pointed out before, she's earning her own money and isn't on an allowance, so it's not like Arturo or Nina can take away her ATM and credit cards. It also occurred to me that Erick could enable her if he were so inclined.
I don't think Consuelo and Miguel are gross. BTW I first saw this actor in La Fuerza del Destino in which his sexuality was questioned when he couldn't do the deed on his wedding night after marrying the slutty character we came to call Merry Piece. But he was fine at the end.
Petra and her man are cute. I've seen him in a lot of series but can't remember the actor's name. Hate when that happens.
Franco's fall is going to be very ugly indeed. It could be the ugliest one yet for a villain of his age. I hate to agree with Humberto about anything because of how vile he has been to his family but here he is right.
Arturo's children aren't being realistic about the divorce either. Small children have a tendency to blame themselves and really get bent out of shape over their parents divorcing but shouldn't the younger generation of both families have seen divorce among the parents of their friends while growing up?
Humberto didn't ask Julia to come and get him, but he was definitely setting her up to do just that. I have the feeling he will die there before she can bring him home.
Like some other commenters, I too found the scene between Eladio and Nina touching and poignant. Lots of pain there. Divorce does not end the ties between people. Divorce separates bodies and households. It does not separate hearts and minds. And the pain of being rejected does not vanish with a divorce decree.
NovelaMaven...Arturo mugging like he's in a low-rent porno flick? Is that what that was about? Really weird...he seemed to be opening up his jaws to devour her somehow. Did get a kick out of how she swished that sheet around.
Also enjoyed how when Eladio really goes into a rage, his therapist jumps up as if to defend himself. Yep, old Eladio can still scare the bejesus out of folks. The tiger lurks within. Of let's just say his "reptilian brain" is still firing rockets.
Thanks UA for all your dedicated work. We are very spoiled with this wonderful recapping team, diverse viewpoints not withstanding.
Kirbo, you have to admit that is was the first time they showed Dani totally freaking out needing her fix. It seems writers now want to show us that yes indeed she is a full blown addict.
I am convinced that lil manipulative maniosa girl has put a horrible guilt trip on her dad. She did not turn to drugs because Art didn't pay attention to her. She got everything and used to thrive on playing and using men and then dumping them. In her case, Imho, she is not a victim of anyone but her own narcisstic self. Some really turn to drugs because of rough life, but she probably turned to drugs because she can't even stand her own self. She is a liar and user. She is Eric's sister for sure. She is so jealous of her sister and Miggie.
As for David, it would be refreshing if for once "calmly" asked Julia about what he hears about her from others. I am at odds with him, because he believes everything he hears about her from the worst sources. So ready to defend his sister girlfriends, and let them diss his mother and shows absolutely no loyalty to Julia. He is so ready to believe the worst. Maybe, just maybe Julia needs to b...ch slap him when he doesn't show respect to her and turning his jive back on her.
Leticia
Aye yie yie the Miguel bashing. Miguel looks for all practical purposes
like a healthy NOT overweight kid his age. He does not look like the steroid
freaks commonly swooned over. Yeah, kinda scrawny, kinda brainy, no beer gut.
No steroid arms, BTW there is always a trade-off. Nothing is free.
1.) Erick's likely going to get Connie & Miguel whacked!
2.) Franco's downfall will be UGLY, which will result in Gaby being together with Aguie, who will be there for her!
3.) David is still STUPID!
As soon as I first saw Daniela drunk or high I knew there was going to be an addiction story in this. Nothing about Arturo said he ever encountered this in his family of origin and we know nothing about Nina with regard to this (I'm guessing there also was none there) but these things do begin somewhere. Also, when a novela family has three or four children of this age group there is always at least one who is a total screw-up or trouble-maker.
I wish we had more information on the parents of Arturo, Eladio, and Nina. In other novelas there used to be photos on mantlepieces or sideboards showing the previous generation, using older actors we know from other series. Those were clues to the sort of people the parents of our "mature" characters were. The last time I remember seeing that was in ENDA where Luis Couturier (of EHdlS) was shown as the father of Carlota, Macarena, and Javier. He had a stern expression that spelled "hard-line traditionalist." No flashbacks to him, though, but not necessary. In LSdP we had nothing like this. We saw a brief flashback of Severiano's grandfather, but nothing about his father. We didn't even find out his name or the names of Candela's parents.
I've pretty much given up hope that we will find out anything really substantive about Nina's family of origin at this point. If there is any possibility we will I vote that it will happen when Erick finally admits having raped Consuelo. That looks like it could lead to Nina freaking out and a reveal that she was raped by a family member, family friend, or someone else she knew back then.
Erick's downfall is going to get very VIOLENT!
1.) Erik has his hands full with his personal blackmailer, I wonder if he can afford to hire more staff. At the last staff meeting he told him he was almoast broke.
2.) Not ugly enough for me. I'm thinking bound to a stake on an anthill and letting some of our friendly little Fire ants move him into the mound one antload at a time.
3.) I just cant best you on that one. I'm sure Dani would agree.
I have been no fan of Nina's, though I think the subtle changes in her with each revelation has been well done by the actress. Last night's scene with Eladio I thought was one of the best scenes in this whole TN. FINALLY, real emotion and realization without dramatics. It was seeing two people, who though they agreed to a divorce and accused their partners accordingly, were holding on to hope that somehow those same partners would come back to them. I also think there was self- awareness that how they thought they were supposed to be around their spouses actually drove them away. Nina's statement on not being enough to me showed that, just like Eladio (the poor schlep who clawed his way to the top using every dirty trick in the book) had insecurities in those relationships so profound it screwed up what they really wanted out of their spouse and how they should have behaved.
The fact they didn't fall into a tangled heap was a nice surprise by the writers. That would have been just too trite and to me, kicked their self awareness to the curb. Eladio will be the one who is on the fence how he handles things and that may be the more intriguing of the plots going forward.
As for Art-- good lord man stop acting like a 16 year old. The way he looked at Julia when he saw her was just like....JORGE. He has no clue who she is, he's in love with a dream and an image he's made in his head. He doesn't listen to her, he doesn't see her lack of interest, it's sad really.
I thought Dani's panic at not being able to get to her crutch to make her hurt go away was very believable. I had a friend in high school who did drugs, not heavy, but enough to deal with an abusive home situation. He was so used to taking something each time something happened to dull himself or get that "high" that when he couldn't, it was like a panic attack. The pent up crying and emotions were almost uncontrollable. That's what she reminded me of last night. Her home life was hardly abusive, but being ignored or only worth how you look to get attention can be emotionally shallow to someone growing up. Hopefully both parents bury their personal crap and help her.
Lulis did her no favors and should fess up too. I'm starting to feel bad for Jorge putting up with this family and then will get kicked to the curb.
Daisynjay
Leticia, ITA what you said about David. After all Julia’s sacrifice to keep him safe from Eladio’s ire all those years, he's showing little understanding of his mom.
Franco saying Eladio and Julia will not ever get back together makes me think that just the opposite will happen. Among all his anvils, Franco maybe will have to live (in prison?) knowing that Eladio is happy as a clam with Julia. Maybe I need to see a shrink myself, but despite Eladio's crazytalk I don't think he'd deliberately kill anyone at this stage in his life. (I'm still not sure if he helped along his mentor's death back in the day.)
Eladio’s nightmare/fantasy of Julia in huge sheet (interesting that it was white instead of scarlet red) and Art fully dressed in a suit and tie was a hoot. !Qué horror! What ugly kissing Eladio’s mind conjured up for Arturo.
Everytime Humberto pulled the slot machine lever, I wondered if the Big One was about to come. This is the most strenuous thing he’s done in ages.
Caesar’s Palace should be very pleased with their product placement last night. Seemed like that longshot of the palace lasted for ages as Arturo and Julia were talking outside. Gorgeous place, but it infuriated me not to see their faces during that conversation.
I dont blame David for not picking up the signs. Adddicts are clever and sly. They will carefully cover their tracks...until it is beyond covering up. David is naive and insome ways sheltered.
Interesting about Miguel. Mileage for sure varies. He was charming in Sombra...but even then I did not get any sort of sexy vibe off him.
And yes. Years ago we had an "ugly crier" label here at Caray. Not that the people doing the crying were ugly, only that their attempt at try to was rather hideous (for various reasons). Arturo gets the "ugly kisser" award for that scene. Oh my...
Diana
Before last night, Dani looked like just a recreational user but now it looks like the drugs have got her. I don't like Daniela but nevertheless I feel bad for her. Drugs can destroy anybody.
must see tv
the gringo
Delilah63, Jaume Mateu (Miguel) definitely isn't an Alpha. He will probably always be the Intellectual or Shy Brother of some main character until he ages up to playing somebody's father, teacher, doctor, lawyer, or shrink.
Have there been any supporting character priests since LSdP? Are they losing ground to shrinks?
Oh wouldn't I love to see Padre Jerónimo about now. He'd straighten everybody up
Niecie in MD. Art and Julia's kisses have always been awkward to me. There's no true 'realistic' passion to them. That crazy kiss last night (even in Eladio's nightmare) was just more of the same awkwardness that I get from them.
Because I didn't start with this Patio, I don't know if this has been brought up; however, the first episode where there is an argument with Julia and Eladio and what sounded like a gunshot always seemed to me as if it were..."the last episode" how it's going to end (or maybe now that I've been pro-Eladio) that it's maybe the penultimate episode.
Listening to all of this death talk from Eladio (not a spoiler just a guess) if I think about that episode as the last one...does Eladio shoot himself? Julia shoots him? Just speculation because I have no idea what's going to happen. I just keep coming back to it because I remember thinking of it in those terms when the first episode aired.
However, the title of this dictated otherwise.
For the last few years the writers really play with our heads during the last two dozen episodes or so until the end, sometimes to the detriment of good story-telling and proper character development. I don't think one needs to go that far to be unpredictable.
The roulette wheel has some of the worst odds but can be a relaxing place to kill time, waste a little money, enjoy a drink, and chat with amiable people. Folks like Humberto are generally rather amiable, hopeful, and have great stories. I have also seen people stand for long periods of time by a roulette table carefully jotting down each number as it hits... I suppose looking for a winning trend.
Carlos
Real quick, gosh I hope Eladio doesn't die!!!
And I've stayed at the Venetian and it was the most beautiful room ever. But loved walking around the Caesar.
Thought about Eladio and Nina as I listened to this classic:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ohyrBDJkksM
My heart kinda goes out to eladio. He really loves julia. I'll be glad when she realize that. And what a liar franco is. Ok all For now. Its gettin better now that its commin to an end.
Thank you UA, YOU'RE GOOD EGG.
There is a particular song of Merle that I used to hear all the time, never paid attention to lyrics. But then one night while driving around, it came on and I listened to the words and wow, It really really got to me. Everytime I hear it now, it jolts me, don't know why it has quite an effect on me. The name of that song is...."He stopped loving her today." Well, that song totally reminds me of Eladio with his unending love for Julia. In fact, last night when Eladio threw Jules picture than picked it up and started crying, it brought that song to mind. Then I hear Merle passed on today.
RIP, Merle, truly truly a legend. I regret never seen him perform. What a manly, sincerely wonderful voice he had. If I could paste a link to that earworm I would do it. I did post a link once, but cant remember hiw I did it.
