Vino el Amor 10/27/16 Chapter 3: Talk of the Future

Bullet points (some combined)

  • Marcos tried to persuade Marta to stay put because she was the only one earning money and León was in school. She told him she would find out if the boss would lend her some money, but the call ended before he could tell her where he was.
  • Lillian walked in on Juan letting him know she knew what he was talking about on the phone. She also called him out on his envy of David, both for his inheritance and because of Lisa. She makes a blackmail threat. He offers to cut her in on what he is skimming off, but she turns him down. “Don't worry. I'll keep your secret until it suits me not to.” [We know that day will come.]
  • Marta found David and Lisa and asked them for a loan of $10K US. They hesitated because of the danger of crossing the border. David offered to find them instead and bring the money.
  • Marcos bought something to eat for Luciana and sent her back to the hotel, saying he wasn't hungry. Bad move, because the goons detained him, then chased her. She was in a store asking for a job. Marcos saw where she went and followed her. The shopkeeper didn't hire her because of her age and told Marcos she was a smart girl and he should watch out for her.
  • The goons returned to their boss to report their lack of progress and El Coyote was angry. He demanded they go back out and not come back without the girl.
  • Marcos told Luciana about Marta asking the boss for money, which he was confident would work out. He kept his arm around her and kept looking around as they walked back to the flophouse.
  • Marta gave David the address and insisted upon accompanying him. He told her she couldn't do this without papers. They finally agreed that David would go and she would wait on the other side. [How do we all know this will not end well?]
  • The four goons went to the flophouse and kicked in the door to their room. They're not there. This could be a Stupid Crook Story because these guys don't seem to know what they're doing. Three of them walk out, leaving the fourth one to scratch his chin.
  • León and Miguel worried about Marta. Miguel has papers and offered to go. Lisa told them this was too dangerous.
  • Luciana and Marcos go into a church and she prays.
  • Perla delivers a glass of lemonade to Juan and asks what it would take to become his secretary. He was amused. [But is he predatory?] He suggested she talk to her grandmother about it and later said that if she completed the studies she could be his secretary. Then he said to leave him alone to work. He smiled as he closed the door.
  • Lisa showed León and Miguel how to plant a rosebush. Lillian arrived to interrupt and make disparaging remarks about Lisa's gardening and her choice of flowers and company. Miguel decided it was time to leave and said so. He and León got up and left. Lillian told Lisa she was packed and would be leaving. No fuss on Lisa's part and she rolled her eyes when Lillian walked away.
  • Graciela and José were at a party and she talked about living together. He wasn't too keen on the idea, but she knew that Lillian was on her way and obviously didn't want to deal with her.
  • The goon who hung back ratted out the others, warning Marcos that they're after Luciana to sell her. Marcos ran to the room, which Luciana had just seen was broken into. He took her hand and they began running. The three other goons spotted them. One headed them off and they were surrounded. The nastiest-looking one has a knife. Two cops spotted this, the goons spotted the cops, and ran for it.
  • Juan looks for David and finds Lisa, who had finished planting her roses. She told him David had to leave for Tijuana in a hurry. Lillian makes yet more disparaging comments [This should be the drinking game for this series] and asks Juan to drive her to the airport. [If he's a lawyer why is he doubling as a chauffeur?] Lisa did not offer to come with them, wished her mother a good trip, and did not kiss her goodbye. [She's glad to see the back of her.]
  • The two cops asked Luciana if she had been hurt, but she told them no. The warned her not to be walking around in that area because it was dangerous. Marcos thanked the police and told Luciana they had to get far away from there. The three goons were right behind them wo they ran again. Meanwhile David arrived at the flophouse and could not find them. The manager had no information other than they left a short while previously.
  • Marcos and Lucian had evaded the goons long enough to purchase bus tickets for Zacatecas. They ran to the bus and a driver (or whoever) stopped the goons because they didn't have tickets. One said that their boss would kill them.
  • Marta waited anxiously at the border as David arrived at the side of the bus. Marcos missed seeing him through the window as the bus pulled out. David asked two workers if he saw them, and gave a description (Luciana is ten years old). They answer no, telling him the bus is going to Zacatecas (which is 2,400 km and almost 24 hours away from Tijuana). However, Marta looked through the barrier and spotted Luciana on the bus. Luciana saw her. Marcos thought she was confused. Marta collapsed against the barrier and cried.
  • Jose talks about going to Spain for an art event and is surprised at Graciela's apparent reluctance. He seemed to realize that she has a thing for her cuñado and wondered whether he was wasting his time with her. He walked away from her at the bar.
  • Marcos told Luciana they would call her mother when they got to Zacatecas. At the border Marta was there past sunset and David arrived just as she was having an uncomfortable encounter with the border patrol. He apologized to her and explained he was too late to catch them. She told him she saw Luciana on the bus. He told her they would have to wait until they call. Marta knew something bad had to have happened.
  • Juan was hanging around Lisa and Fernanda long past his working hours. He told her to call him if she needed anything. [Lillian was right about him.]
  • The next morning in Zacatecas Marcos saw two of the goons on the front page of the local paper, El Monitor. [They are in the ninth circle.] He put back the paper. Luciana asked about their old house, but Marcos thinks it must be occupied by now. He told her they needed to look for a phone to call Marta.
  • Lisa brought a breakfast tray to David in bed. Under the lid was a watch box which contained a cigar. She told him she was pregnant. [We know this happiness is in the shadow of doom.]
  • Marcos called Marta and explained things. She was relieved that they were alright. [Ditto the above.] She told him she wanted to join them but Marcos reminded her that this would be at the expense of their dreams for their children.
  • David had to tell Miguel that Luciana and her dad were in Zacatecas, but he would see her again.
  • David and Juan discussed the wine production. They have different ideas about it, with Juan wanting to make a quick sale for early profits [and we know why] while David wanted a Reserva and Gran Reserva on the wine he is planning. David wanted a legacy brand for his family. Juan caved for the moment and got yet another reminder about Marcos and his family. [David should have found a better lawyer by now.]
  • Gutierrez' boss informed him that he is being accused of unnecessary roughness in the Marcos Muñoz case. Gutierrez pretended not to remember about this, then said he wasn't worried because he had witnesses.
  • Marcos and Luciana were on another bus. The red eye. He looked worried.
  • Miguel offered to help in the search but Marta told him it was too dangerous. She spoke on the phone to a friend of the family who wants to help.
  • Lisa got out of bed, doubled over, and passed out. [The worst kind of omen.]

Urban,
Thanks for all your hard work. You are the best. Thanks for the recap!

Hasta Pronto!

Urban, thank you for recap and commentary.

I am glad: the police showed up and Marcos and Luciana are headed south/ Gutiérrez's misconduct is being addressed.

Yes, Lisa passing out is "the worst kind of omen."

Thank you for doing this for us UA.

I'm torn over what irritates me the most. Marcos's idiocy that borders the absurd or Marta's wailing.

Hope the writers and actors get better than this

Urban, how good of you to provide us with another exceptional summary. So, so far superior to the episodes!

I smiled all the way through at your marvelous commentary "Lillian makes yet more disparaging comments [This should be the drinking game for this series]" and "She told him she was pregnant. [We know this happiness is in the shadow of doom]" were spot on and clever.

Jarifa, I was very surprised that Gutiérrez was being called on the carpet as well. As he seems to be a featured player, looks like he will be around a while (unfortunately). I recall the other policeman didn't seem to treat them too kindly either. Perhaps he was just doing his job, I can't quite remember.

tofie, the beginning is dragging a bit I am being positive in hoping that the roles will get meatier and the script more intriguing once the time switch occurs.

As there would be no story if Lisa were to survive, we know the end is coming. "Lisa got out of bed, doubled over, and passed out. [The worst kind of omen]. Indeed...

NovelaMaven, where are you???

UA, thank you for the excellent screen shot and a fantastic summary.

I have no problem with most of the writing of this series so far:

-- Lisa has Lillian's number and doesn't take shit from her
-- Marcos has a better sense of danger so far
-- The writers finally have English being spoken in US scenes, especially in scenes involving the police

I have no tolerance for manipulative tears, as I have learned to recognize them in life. Marta's tears are sincere because she truly feels helpless, a condition she doesn't enjoy.

Or course, this series begins with the (usually unrealistic) premise that David neglected to get his workers documented sooner, which should not be the case. He inherited the vineyards and presumably grew up learning how to manage them and the sale/processing of their crops, so he should have had his workers documented long before this.

Thanks, Urban. I'm still testing out Vino and your coverage is the best.

Maybe Marcos should've rifled through that newspaper for the details before flipping it over so Lisa wouldn't see two of coyote's goons on the front page. The paper said the two were found dead and probably murdered by a rival gang. But my guess is coyote did it in retaliation for their failure to snatch Luci.

Urban- Thank you so much for taking the lead on recapping this show in its first week. Just fantastic.

I haven't had the chance to see this episode yet, but glad to hear that Marcos got Luci far away from the predatory coyote and his people. Whew!

The first week of a tn, especially when it occurs in the past, is not the most accurate way to judge the tn. This is all setup for what will happen during the remainder of the tn, and needs to move at a certain pace and establish certain relationships. We know Lisa has to leave the picture at some point. We know Luci and Marcos will be separated from Marta and Leo for a long time. It also seems that Luci has a growing chip on her shoulder about La Migra, especially Gutierrez, and el patron David, whom she believes just abandoned her and her father. All of this will shape adult Luci when we meet her after the time jump.

Perhaps David's father didn't pass away that long ago, and now that David is in charge he's just now doing something his father (and MANY agriculturists) neglected to do-- help all his workers obtain legal status. It likely wasn't his first priority after taking over the vineyard.

"Maybe Marcos should've rifled through that newspaper for the details before flipping it over so Lisa wouldn't see two of coyote's goons on the front page. The paper said the two were found dead and probably murdered by a rival gang. But my guess is coyote did it in retaliation for their failure to snatch Luci".

Niecie, I didn't understand what happened in that scene at all so thank you for explaining it. That is quite scary. I really had hoped we'd seen the last of Coyote, but maybe not...

Coyote Ugly indeed.

Diana

Vivi, I am hoping that Marta will tell Luci that David tried to find them?

You're right of course that the plot needs time to develop and things that set the stage for the future need to occur.

It just seemed as though Luci and her father were on the "mystery bus trip to nowhere", circling and circling.

Diana

The bar for Marcos is set way too low. Why would a father hide from his daughter the very real possibility of danger from a specific group no matter how uncomfortable. Marcos the imbecile exposed his daughter to the Coyote yet her adoration and trust in him keeps her in danger. I'm wondering what stupid decision he makes next that gets her hurt and why on earth would David want the idiot back.

I get the set up bit but the set up in La Sombra was the best part.

UA, thank you very much for recapping (and so quickly!) If you would like me to do bullet points for Monday or Tuesday or tonight, to give you a break, let me know...

This tn is losing me fast between Marta's wailing (tofie, that gets my vote for most annoying thing, I cannot stand this lady) and my personal dislike for crime dramas. I just want the kids to grow up, the romance to begin and the wine to flow. That's what was advertised by Univision and what I signed up for. I know we are setting up the future bonding of David and grown-up Luciana right now, but this is not entertaining me at all. Right now the only things I'm enjoying are the theme song and the little glimpse of David's chest when he leaves an extra button unbuttoned.

Marcos is kind of a simpleton but I'm glad he did have the brains to get Luciana out of there.

On a positive note I like Lisa. Well, outside her choice of swimming hole.

Thanks, dy77. Can you do Monday night? The prologue of this series is unlikely to be more than 6 episodes so we're halfway there.

I personally like crime dramas as long as they're not focused on narcotrafficantes. I have intense personal reasons for hating that crowd.

tHank you very much, UA. The bullet points are an efficient way to communicate what happened.

Tofie..Ahhh..La Sombre and the swirly , red skirt.

I am still in for this one, but I am anxious for the setup to be complete and the adult drama to start. I will have to get a bottle of wine this weekend so that I can have access glass while I watch the vineyard saga unfold.

Access???...no...that was supposed to be " a wee glass"

Thanks, Urban. I actually watched the whole thing last night, but with these early setup episodes it is really easy to miss something.

The limited exposure to Lillian was helpful in this episode. She is tiresomely nasty.

I still find David's trusting nature a little worrisome. I realize that Juan is a sneak, and it's not fair to expect David to figure that out right away... I just don't like it when the villain is some devious super-genius who perfectly avoids detection for years and years, and/or the galan is too naive to notice the red flags.

I like Luciana (perfectly cast, by the way... looks just like the grownup version) but I agree that her father was not doing her any favors by not letting her know how much danger she was in. I hope that's not an error that repeats itself.

Sorry, I had to remove the comment. I left off some things.

UA, again another fantastic recap.

Julie, I agree with you about David. I have a feeling his over-trustfullness is going to come and bite him in the butt sooner or later.

Susanlynn, I agree with you as well. The adult drama needs to start already. I hope it comes within the next episode or two.

Lisa is definitely well written and casted. I really like her. It's going to be sad to see her go,

I'm glad Gutierrez is finally getting reprimanded. He deserves whatever's coming to him. (I'm not very fond of ICE officers for reasons.)

Also happy to see Lillian go. Finally.

As for Graceless, she should have taken that offer to go to Spain. Get as far away from David as possible.

Sadly I'm underage, so no wine for me Susanlynn LOL

UA: Thank you very much for the recap.

Madison: Still disgusted by the self-hating idiots here.

I'm also going to be devastated when Elisa likely gets killed off because we all agree this will be the catalyst of the domino effects going forward in the TN.

Julie: Juan is even a WORSE scumbag like the other villains.

If Juan is so clever at his villainy he was obviously a slacker at Uni.

Welcome, Madison. I once accidentally discovered that you can combine pomegranate juice with apple juice to get a non-alcoholic drink that tastes like red wine. And I agree with you about Graceless. Spain is a fabulous place and loaded with hot guys, flamenco music, and great wine. If only I were your age....

Thank you UA for your recap and bullet points. You did a very good job summing it all up.

I am a little frustrated with this story because I am wondering why they hired illegal immigrants in the first place. Good employers make sure that their employees can legally work before hiring them, so they don't run into INS problems. Also, I never knew that illegal immigrants could be sent back so quickly. It seemed like Marcos and his daughter were rounded up and sent to Tijuana on the same day. I always thought it was a longer process and that there was time for a hearing, not just "round 'em up and put them on a bus back across the border."

Thanks Urban for the drink idea. LOL Only 2 years to go. I agree about Spain. I've never been, but I do want to move there eventually.

About Juan being a slacker at Uni, I second that. He's not the brightest crayon in the box but I'd say he's close.

David should have definitely tried to clear up the immigration paperwork sooner. I'm honestly baffled at how clueless he is sometimes. I guess that's a TN staple. One or both of the protagonists is usually so oblivious it pretty much makes us wonder if they have any sense.

Most of these series have stories that are based on something that should not be the case or that have played out the wrong way. I don't know how long you've been watching but I've been watching them for two decades and change and most begin with one or more of the following:

-- An old feud
-- A gross misunderstanding
-- A thwarted romance
-- A crime (usually kidnapping, rape, or murder*)
-- A disappearance
-- Someone having been swindled, usually out of an inheritance

*Any of these three crimes often earn the perp a death sentence from the writers (at Televisa, anyway).

Police corruption is an example here of abuse of authority, which is a frequent theme in novelas.

UA: Speaking of police corruption, it's also common in the Philippines too.

UA: I hate the narco stuff too; glad that is not in this one! I can do bullet points Monday night, will cut off the late trick-or-treaters at 8:45!

Urban thanks. This story wreaks of future sadness. And all at the hands of the evil in this family. Talk about cold blooded. The mom inlaw from middlearth hell, the good for nothing lawyer/so called friend, the evil sister. All kinds of nasty going on. I hope that
Family can come back together with out to
Much damage. And the coyoty guy, theres a hot Flame waitin for him.
Thanks Urban, this recap really brings out all
The good and bad guts of these lives. Thanks.: )

I just binged on all three eps of this TN on hulu. WOW! UA you have done a masterful job of recapping and laying the ground work for us. Thank you so much!

I'm ready to get to the time jump of Lucia/David, but I understand we have to get the outline of who/where/what/why in place to move forward. I just hope it's soon because I'm getting tired of all of this fluff.
