Vino el Amor #40, December 27, 2016: Vino el New and Improved Competition
- Joselo keeps calling Gracie while she's on her date with Cesar. Cesar offers to tell him to stop stalking her. Heh.
- Bobby correctly senses that Luciana is more into older men like Miguel and is going to ditch him. Ha ha, actually he is just sad and missing his mom and afraid Luciana will leave, but he tells her to go and that he never wants to talk to her again.
- The Sunday date for Marta and Gutierrez finally happened! It's sooo awkward with Leon there, but no Luciana as Bobby has detained her. Luckily Gutierrez is saved by the bell again, as Lilian threatens him if he doesn't get over to their date and now.
- No-game Cesar tries to flirt with Gracie and it's painful to be her and for the viewer to watch.
- Gutierrez pretends that the police station called him and tells Marta and Leon that he must go. It's just the nature of his job. Leon understands but Marta protests, because Luciana hasn't gotten there yet. Gutierrez thought she was in San Francisco. Marta says she wanted to surprise him. Now Gutierrez really explains that when the police station calls, the policeman must go. (Yes, he's lying, but I can see why Leon bought it.)
- Bobby plays video games. David asks why he is so annoyed with Luciana (Luciana had messaged him this). Bobby explains that he feels sad and alone. David apologizes and promises to be there for him. He explains that when one loves someone, you want that person to be happy. The father and son hug it out.
- Cesar has to leave for a bit. Gracie is devastated (not). I bet she wishes he'd return soon though, because Luciana has gotten to the restaurant and spots her. Thus ensues several long scenes of verbal jousting between the two ladies, kicking off with Luciana calling Gracie a hypocrite and apologizing for thinking she wanted to be with David, because clearly she wants to be with the guy from the hotel in San Francisco.
- Gutierrez gets to the hotel room, but Lil has split. He panics and tries to call her.
- Luciana tells Gracie that she suspects Joselo is more than just her agent since they were spotted coming out of a hotel room together. Gracie correctly tells her that she owes her no explanations. They trade final snipes and Luciana stomps off.
- Liliana comes back to the hotel room. She had left, but had seen Gutierrez arrive and decided to return, to tell him that is it and she is done with him treating her that way and keeping her waiting.
- Leon liked Gutierrez. He tells Marta to give him a break, work happens. Marta noticed how he was checking his watch and phone. He just doesn't seem to have time for her. Luciana joins them and explains she was late because of Bobby.
- Apparently Fer has been taking creeper pics of Tano working and likes to stare at them:
- David interrupts the creeper photo staring to check in with his daughter. He's feeling very fatherly today! Peter's father asked if Fer could join the family. Obviously, David said no! A look of relief crosses Fer's face. But wait, David is very concerned about Fer. What's up with this Peter guy? Is this serious? He knows he's been out of the dad loop. But he wants to do better and he wants to know what is going on with Fer. Ah just check her hard drive! Fer confides that Peter is much more into her than she is into him. David gives her good advice and tells her to talk to him about that. I hope Peter isn't going to turn villain here.
- Gutierrez and Lil have finished up their sexytimes and he asks Lil if she's OK.
- Lilian is thinking that he only is with her for the financial support for her campaign and tries to pick a fight. He points out that he never asked her for the help; she offered. They start up the sexytimes again.
- David is still being fatherly and tells Fer about Bobby being mad at Luciana and asks her to talk to him.
- Marta and children return home and Marta goes off to bed. Leon tells Luciana that he liked Gutierrez, and especially that he's dedicated to work. Miguel enters and is all goo goo eyes at Luciana. She starts to fill him in on the evening, but when she gets to the "I was late because of Bobby and then I fought with Gracie in the restaurant" part, Miguel correctly points out that Gracie's activities shouldn't matter. Leon smartly decides to get the heck out of that room.
- David finishes up the fatherly chats for the evening by telling Fer that it's been his fault the children and him have all become distant but that is going to change. Fer says she's glad and wants the three of them to be happy together. That is why she resented Luciana. David reiterates his kids are the most important thing to him. Happy hugs.
- Susan's lawyer met with Tano and told him what was in store for him, and Tano is not happy as he fills in Ramon. Basically, if Tano threatens Mark in any way, or looks like he is doing so, he can be blamed for anything bad happening to Mark. (Uh-oh, hope that's not foreshadowing.)It makes things worse that he's Latin and dating Susan. Ramon says he should seek David's help, but Tano is reluctant. Ramon says that Tano needs a good lawyer, and Tano agrees to ask David for help if the situation continues.
- Miguel visits David in his office to pay him for the bottle of Gran Reserve that he and Luciana consumed on the night of the non-nookie, non-presentation.
- Gracie visits Juan who teases her about the date with no-game Cesar. Is that why she's in a snit? Gracie clarifies that the verbal jousting with Luciana has put her in a mood. She needs Juan to help her with the Joselo situation.
- David doesn't want the money for the wine. Miguel says something about how the wine was to be shared with the person you love and its value comes from the shared experience. David is like, fine, leave the money.
- Peter talks to Fer at school. He's bummed she can't go. He had all these plans! Won't she miss him? Fer speaks up and tell him she's worried that he's much more intense in this relationship and she isn't. Peter tells her that's OK, he knows she'll fall in love with him. He grabs her in a big hug and she is just thrilled (not).
- Cesar is the next visitor to David's office, only he's turned into Grumpy David! Grumpy D whines to Cesar about how he hates to hear Miguel talk of his love for Luciana. David is thinking about going on the road to promote his wine to get away from the Miguel/Luciana/Jealousy thing. He's worried he's going to hurt someone -- it all makes him so grumpy!
- David changes the subject and asks no-game Cesar how the date went. OK, but even no-game Cesar senses his lack of game and feels things need to move along. Lilian comes in and Cesar goes to work.
- Miguel and his guns stroll with Luciana in the vineyard.
- Miguel tells Luciana that David didn't want to take the money. Luciana thinks (correctly for once) that maybe it would've been better to pay Juan. Miguel says that he wanted to make sure David is clear that Miguel and Luciana are a couple. Luciana turns Miguel's advice around on him and says why does it matter? They get cute and flirtatiously say goodbye as Miguel must run errands.
- Lilian solicits political contributions for Gutierrez from David. David is reluctant as politics is not for him and he doesn't like Gutierrez's anti-immigration policies. According to Lilian, now Gutierrez has a special proposal to help undocumented immigrants. That turns things around and David pledges his support but only after he has a talk with Gutierrez.
- Marta comes into David's office with coffee. Lilian makes a point of saying she needs coffee after being up late with Bryan. OOH that makes Marta mad and she gets out of there quickly. David tells Lilian he plans to go on a wine promotional trip with Gracie and Lilian suggests he takes the kids. He likes the idea. He reminds Lilian not to be mean to Marta.
- No-game Cesar finds Gracie on the patio and hits on her again. She puts him off.
- Those dumb school bullies try to bully Bobby again. This time Bobby stands up to them. Good job Bobby.
- Lilian visits Adolfo, the rival winemaker and hits him up for a campaign contribution for Gutierrez. Adolfo is totally team Gutierrez but his profits are down and he doesn't have the funds. Luckily, his daughter is coming back to town with some great ideas to improve the winery.
- Miguel is in town to deliver boxes of wine to a local eatery. He overhears a pretty girl critique a glass of his wine to the bartender. She is not feeling it. She thought introducing it in an art gallery was dumb and took away from the wine's importance. Miguel is intrigued and comes on over and demands to know what is wrong with the Vino el Amor. She says it's a very good wine and she recognizes the notes, but it's too heavy and oaky. French Oak, right? Miguel tells her that this wine was his wine, and she tells him to get ready for some competition because the wine she is working on now will be better! Oh, and never tell your secrets to the competition. She saunters off, points scored. OMG this girl actually knows her stuff and likes to do her job. I'm Team dump Luciana for new wine girl! So apparently is Miguel, because he asks the bartender who she was. He doesn't know. They both think she was pretty. (Edited to add: and it turns out new wine girl is played by a much different looking Lucero from Un Camino Hacia el Destino so she can act as well.)
- Lilian helps us all out and tells Adolfo she is glad that Erika is coming back (so here's our new wine girl). Lilian and Adolfo are cagey with each other about winery stuff, but are glad they are longtime friends. Adolfo would like it to be more. Lilian would like Adolfo to vote for Gutierrez.
- Marta stops by the station to confront Gutierrez (thanks Bill C.!) and she tells him she knows he was with Lilian. He lies and says it was after he went in to work. That really doesn't help much and Marta lets him know she's peeved he has no time for her. He sweet talks her a bit.
- Fer returns home from school and finds Tano working. They get their flirt on and she subtly lets him know that she's not traveling with Peter, while he subtly lets her know he's good with that.
- Erika chats on the patio with dad Adolfo. She has learned a lot about winemaking. She tells him about David's Gran Reserve. She doesn't seem too worried about their competition.
- Daddy David checks in with the kids after school. Bobby is glad he stood up to the bullies. Yay Bobby. Fer and David are proud of him.
- David then drops the bomb that he and Gracie are going on a promotional trip through Latin America for the wine, and Fer and Bobby will join them for the Mexican leg. The school is cool with it and they will leave tomorrow! Bobby is happy but Fer is not.
- Adolfo and Erika discuss how David's wine has the best sales right now. Erika calls the presentation at the art gallery a "clown thing" and is unimpressed. Adolfo says that it worked for them and so how will his vineyard beat the Vino el Amor? Erika says something about using the best grapes and American barrels for their "gran reserve" and I don't think she plans to age them for years.
- David is naively surprised that his teenage daughter does not want to vacation with him. Anyone with teenage daughters knows that they never want to vacation with parents. Especially not with cute vineyard workers left back in the vineyard. Fer tries to use the "you'll be working and have no time for us" and the "but I have exams" cards, but David counters all of that. He's building free time into their schedule and the school will work around the exams. David plays the "I just want to have dad time again" and "I want to show you our roots in Mexico" cards, and Fer folds.
- I feel bad for tonight's recapper because apparently it will be Perla inspirational speech time again, as Juan tells her to get ready for it. Carito is apparently coming too, and Juan tells her that tonight will be a test for Carito. (I suspect a major foreshadowing alert there!)
- Lilian and Gracie meet for lunch, and Gracie has brought Joselo with her. Apparently the whole family was supposed to be there but couldn't make it. Joselo gushes about Grace's talents and makes it clear he is more than just her agent. Lilian gets a kick out of that, while Gracie gulps and orders wine.
- Luciana interrupts Susan's workday to whine about Miguel paying David for the Gran Reserve. Susan is always so patient with these interruptions and she points out that Miguel's tactic might have been wrong, but Miguel probably senses that Luciana and David have something and wants to make it clear to David that Miguel is with Luciana. Luciana asks about Susan and Tano. Apparently whatever legal move Mark filed against Tano is happening tomorrow and Susan is worried. A man arrives with beautiful flowers for Susan.
Too bad they turned out to be from that awful Mark |
- David and Cesar discuss the upcoming trip David is taking. Cesar says that getting away from the jealousy issues for a bit is not really going to solve anything. David knows, but he knows he must control his jealousy; otherwise he will do something that he will have to repent for. We get this dramatic Jaws type music at the end to underscore this!

Other than David getting some rare good-dad time with both his unstoppable cyborg son and Fernanda, the most important thing about this episode (that wasn't Lilian in a bathrobe) was probably the introduction of Erika the Hitherto Unseen--and she showed up and immediately showed herself to appear at least as if not more capable than Luciana's been made to appear to date. (It doesn't hurt that Barbara Lopez looks a touch more age-appropriate for Miguel--and David--to boot.) Since she immediately friendly-antagonized Miguel, no doubt we allllll know where that's going once he peels himself off of Luciana for a day or two.
That was Barbara Lopez? She looks different (older) than when she was in Camino Destino playing Lucero. She was good in that show, even if that plot she was in with the teacher turned husband turned kidnapper was cringe-worthy.
So anybody want to take bets on how many MINUTES FerBrat will be an adult virgin?
"Tano...ya know what I really want for my Burfdai?" "Hint--it's a verb, not a noun."
Ja Ja Ja
"Ah just check her hard drive!"
Gosh, Caesar cannot be that clueless or can he? I find it hard to be sympathetic towards pathetic.
Finally, Erika, thank you for something to fight over. Hate that David didn't see you first. Go back to Mexico Luciana or you and Graciela can paint together in your underwear and bitch about the new girl.
Nearly as desperate as Cesar is Marta.
Kirby, I get why you find the ladies attractive (they are) - but I think some of the sex talk, especially about the younger actresses, may make some other commenters on here uncomfortable so would like to ask you to tone that down a bit. Thanks for understanding.
Most of our Male characters are highly flawed and/or just plain insignificant, and a couple of us have renamed them. IE: NOJuan. B U T..this same brush can paint almost all the males.
Below is a list of the No Men. Figure out which name goes with the a character.
The teachers key will be available later.

Miguel and Erika's meet cute felt natural and he looked so adorable when he was taken aback by her critique of his wine. These two had instant chemistry, but of course he'll waste time still chasing Luciana.
Been thinking about Luciana's treatment of Miguel. A while back she got ticked when he confessed he'd kissed Carito when he was sloppy drunk. Luciana showed enough anger at the time to make a reasonable person believe she was jealous. Now, Luciana has kissed David two times by my count and almost kissed him countless other times. But does she confess this to Miguel? Nope.
Kirby: Might end up with Sonis with the way things are turning out.
I'm sensing Body Count will increase with Juan, Mark & Graciela cooking up something sinister.
Tofie: Brian "I'm ashamed of being Latino" Gutierrez is addicted to Lillian. She's the drug of choice.
Perla bringing Carito along does seem to foreshadowing something bloody.
Bill C: My Bold Prediction still stands: Erika will be a BAD GIRL & one of the antagonists!
FerBrat keeping pictures of Tano is super creepy. I'm surprised she hasn't been stalking him in the shower.
Gut is reprehensible. ..Boinking LIkian while courting MArta. What is this guy's game?
Kirby..I'll try the game. Nogame has to be our long-suffering life coach Cesar. Nohairdo must be TAno a!though I prefer the name NOcomb. That long last name could be COyote. Nochance , I suppose,is sweet. Lovesick Miguel. I guess NOclue is LEon. Nogood applies to both Nojuan and creepy MCcreeperson MArkme. I would refer to Gut as NOmorals.
What I could see happening is Erika competing for David. Since she is Adolfo's only child (I think) wouldn't he like the idea of her marrying David and joining the two vineyards?
NONookie is Miguel
NOClue is David
RATS. I am not at home and so do not have my key, and do not remember the rest.
I'd bet Graciela wouldn't like it one bit!
I will tell you one thing about Mr. Gut, he has more stomach than I do. :-)
Take one for the team wing man, shit..they are so ugly, take two.
"No-game Cesar tries to flirt with Gracie and it's painful to be her and for the viewer to watch" (amen), "Sexytimes" and your wise observation "Anyone with teenage daughters knows that they never want to vacation with parents. Especially not with cute vineyard workers left back in the vineyard" were among many favorites.
"I'm Team dump Luciana for new wine girl!" Yup, totally with you and Niecie on this. The actress has charisma and presence. You know, I actually found myself wondering (after her brief scenes) how she might have done with the Luciana character. This actress has spirit and fire. Luci has quiet anger and while beautiful, there seems to be a moodiness in all her scenes. Erika is a breath of fresh air.
"Since she immediately friendly-antagonized Miguel, no doubt we allllll know where that's going once he peels himself off of Luciana for a day or two" was great Bill.
As for the drama with Brian...I could care less. Marta is just OK and I don't like Lili or Brian. He is just too stoopid to realize he should stay away from both women - the revelation he was behind Luci's deportation will surely sink his dreams of higher office. The first time he REALLY ticks off Lili will also end that dream.
I expect David's trip will occur but there might be some action with Luci beforehand.
dy, your recaps are always so much fun. Thank you!
Diana
Kirby, NoMommie has to be Bobby, right? I am thinking NoSmile for David.
Steve and UA, interesting prediction about Erika having to marry David because of Lil and Adolpho, maybe looking for a vineyard merger? Hmmmm. LOL I'm just so excited for Miguel to have an interesting love interest that I hadn't even thought about siccing Grumpy David on Erika but it's definitely a possibility plotline-wise.
NOJuan Obviously Juan

NoIcewaterforyhouwhileyouburninhell Juan and/or Mark and/or Coyote or all three.
Has there ever been a telenovela in which the two leads hardly ever speak to each other civilly, kiss only twice, have one gentle encounter, but no kiss. Miguel and David have more going with each other than Luciana and David. 'Cmon, let's get to the romantic stuff. I really don't want to see either Lilian or Marta with Gutierrez again. Gutierrez in the police barracks shower by himself would be fine.
Dy77, along with everyone else, loved your, "I'm Team dump Luciana for new wine girl! So apparently is Miguel, because he asks the bartender who she was." We're all so hoping *something* happens soon. This triangle is dragging.
I have a feeling that Luciana has to feel betrayed by Miguel before she entertains any more thoughts about a viable relationship with David. Don't forget--she PROMISED Miguel no one would come before them. She's half-heartedly on Team Miguel and puts on a good show of it being whole-hearted.
If David is really thinking about his kids, he wouldn't take them out of school just before exams y punto.
I don't think that I have ever seen the girl playing Erika. She is sassy. I agree that Irena is playing LUci as a lackluster moody, cranky sort.
Yes, to the statement on teen daughters. I have been a teen, raised two daughters, and taught a whole lot of teenage girls. They can be quite surly. I used to tell my older daughter "You are part of this family but not part of this marriage."
Miguel sure had a sparkle in his eye during his encounter with Erika. I think that he will end up with that girl.
David has to get proactive and stop moping and stewing. The guy is harshing everyone's mellow.
I feel bad for Ramon who seems like a good guy. Maybe Marta will give him a chance when she finds out who Gut really is. So who does that leave for Soosan after Coyote does away with NOJuan and Markme? Cesar??? Tano ??? No, I think that Fer will finally snare Tano.I hope she takes him to a barber or convinces him to let that gorgeous head of hair grow to shoulder Reno Raines\Renegade length.
"harshing everyone's mellow" hehehe, thanks Susanlynn
"Miguel and David have more going with each other than Luciana and David". HA! Thanks for the belly laugh Anita. Glad you are back!
Susanlynn, I can only hope Ramon is being left on the back burner until Brian fizzles up and goes away. Which I hope is any moment now. :)
Diana
Let us all be grateful that none of these folks is in our orbits!
I can't taste the soybean meal in Taco Bell's mystery beef in an enchilada, so I'm out.
Why is it that Cesar is such a wise old sage when he gives David good advice, but he can't see much about his own life? Can't he figure out that Gracie is just playing a part and not interested in him? Or that she's using him to just extract information out of him?
I'll be doing tonight's recapping so let's see if this moves along a little more. Ericka is an interesting addition; I can see her going for Miguel.
Cynthia--It must be hard for a hunk like Gut to make love to Lilian, when he could have anyone he wants, just strutting around "Sonoma." Unfortunately for him (and us) Lilian has him in a vise. And Marta? She can certainly offer him a clean home, pressed uniform and great meals. She'd be better for him in the long run, but he's done her wrong. When is Marta going to wake up?
Gutierrez is just really prostituting himself with Lilian. And it's just gross!
And I'm the only one who thinks Cesar has a little tiny bit of (admittedly geeky) game, right? :) He's just up against the one person for whom any amount of game simply isn't enough.
Let's see now, after Luci recognizes Gutflesh will Lillian's value to him evaporate? I'm thinking that is really all she has over on him. She is pretending to go with this "Introduce you to all the right people" angle, but looking at the big picture, I'd be surprised if she could really be of any benefit. I have never had trailer camp tornado bait help me in any way, they are typically just remoras like Lillian. Your Mileage May Vary. :-)
Ramon has been "in" the picture for so many years that to Marta he's just invisible. Once she recognizes that they have a lot in common and he's the strong, silent type, he'll probably let her cry on his shoulder and perhaps her impressions of him will change.
Agree that for now, all Lilian has over Gut is the Marcos/Luci deportation. But as he said, she outs him--he can turn around and out her for setting up the whole thing. They will each call the other liar and no one will believe either one of them.
"call the other liar and no one will believe either one of them." but they will believe 'truthful to a fault' Luci.
I hope I'm wrong about this!
