Vino el Amor, #50, January 11, 2017: Vino el Chilled Wine and Hot Coffee Breaks
In this episode, the grapes are getting cold, Gracie, Fer and Sonia are getting bold, and the plot devices are getting old! But the coffee and wood are warm!
Repeated scenes:
- Lilian runs into Adolfo and Erika.
- Miguel proudly admits he called the police on Juan and his bad wine.
- David and Luciana say adios.
This episode (some scenes may be combined):
- Grumpy David just looks crestfallen after Luciana takes her leave of him.
- Lilian looks like she's positively enjoying her date with Adolfo. As he puts it, good wine and good company are the best things when one is stressed out.
- Adolfo is kind of a hard court press date! He really sweet talks Lilian. He wants to give her a more exciting life than being a grandmother. He hopes she'll move out of the world's dumbest vineyard and go travel with him and enjoy life. Honestly, this sounds like a great deal, I think Lilian should go for it!
- Gracie asks Grumpy David if he is OK. No, he's grumpier than usual. There are many problems. Well, Gracie is here to help! David starts with his fight with Fernanda yesterday. Gracie's got that, she'll talk to her. Gracie asks if the real source of the grumpiness is Luciana. DING DING DING but David deflects and says he's worried about the cold front and the harvest. Gracie offers to help. David appreciates all she is doing for him.
- Gracie, woman of her word, goes right to Fernanda to talk to her. Of course, what they really discuss is how Luciana is always the one who makes dad grumpy by exaggerating things! (LOL, Gracie is not actually wrong in that statement.) To beat Luciana, Gracie advises that Fer not get into any more fights with her dad. By getting closer to him, Fer will be in a better position to separate Grumpy Dad from Luciana. Fer thanks Gracie for the advice.
- Luciana and Leon prepare to depart and get goodbye hugs from Marta, Miguel and Carito. Leon forgets his hat and goes back into the empty kitchen to retrieve it. There he finds Sonia, who gives him an awkward goodbye pat. The sexual tension builds as he pats her back:
- She brought him a book too! He's so thrilled!
- The actual couple with potential worth being actually invested in shares a little peck and hug after this gift exchange. Leon is over the moon and trips his way out of the kitchen. He will clearly never wash his cheek again.
- Fer asks Gracie why she gave Luciana the picture of the family as a wedding present. Gracie says it was a way to remind Luciana that she's not in the family. Fer is glad Luciana left. She told David about how Luciana didn't provide the info Gracie needed for the presentation when requested. She asks Gracie to talk to Grumpy Dad about letting her see Tano and goes to apologize to David. Gracie snarks about how it would be great if everyone was so easy to manipulate.
- OK back to the couples the writers think we care about. Susan and Tano worrywart about the wine getting cold while wearing shirts with no/short sleeves. He is kind of giving her a little lip and calls her boss. Miguel interrupts their chilly exchange by saying he has bad news...
- Fernanda apologizes to Grumpy Dad. This makes him a touch less grumpy. Fer slips in a little manipulation a la Gracie by telling David that she was just jealous of Luciana and worried she'd mess up their family after they all bonded on the trip. Gracie comes in and smiles at her handiwork. Fer says that this family would just not be the same without Gracie. True That!
- Lilian finds Sonia crying in the kitchen. Sonia confides that she's got someone but he left and she's sad. He wasn't what she thought she wanted, but she was starting to like him. Aw! Lilian actually empathizes a bit! She says that men are idiots who don't value what they had. Sonia asks if Lilian is talking about Gutierrez. Yup! That *adjective* is helping Luciana because David asked him to! Sonia advises Lilian to leave it alone, and Lilian says that's what Gut said.
- Juan reports to David that they have what they need to face the frost. But bigger issues, Miguel reported the bad wine to the police. Now they are being investigated. Miguel comes in (I guess to give his bad news) but first David asks him why he didn't go to David first before going to the police. David would've gone with him. (David is starting to remind me of a man in my company whose administrative staff just finds ways to get the work done without him because he's sooooo slooooow.) Miguel felt it couldn't wait. Susan is with Miguel and wants to get back to the pressing matter at hand of the cold grapes! The bad news is that it is going to be colder than we thought! I see Miguel and Susan are dressed for the weather, NOT.
- Miguel says it will be a critical night and all will have to do all they can to not lose the harvest.
- Back in the kitchen, Sonia and Lilian commiserate over cookies and tequila about their weakness for hot Latino men with hot muscles and attitudes. Lilian is over all that though, as she resents Luciana and her family and the way they want to take over everything. She grouses that she will not give them the slightest chance.
- Sonia leaves and Gracie comes in, getting in a dig that Lilian should find friends instead of drinking with the housekeeper, although she gets why they are celebrating Luciana's departure. Lilian grouses that Marta isn't gone, and probably won't leave until Bobby gets married. Gracie thinks that things will work out and Marta will leave to follow Luciana if they play their cards right. Lilian slips that it didn't work out the last time she tried, back when she asked Gutierrez to deport them. Gracie is interested to learn this news and chuckles to herself.
- Juan does not want to be interrupted by a pesky cold front. David says Miguel is right and everyone must unite to save the grapes. Juan says he already bought buckets and wire and sent the men to cut firewood. (The plan is to have a bunch of firewood burning in various buckets.) David has made a work schedule and all will work until dawn. Susan is happy with the plan and just thinks they need to cut more wood. Juan wonders why they don't go buy some fuel for heating things. David reminds Juan that fuel emits gas that will contaminate the grapes. Juan still wants to talk about the police, but David says that right now they need to focus on the harvest and talking to the vineyard folks about the night ahead. Juan, Miguel and Susan all eyeball each other.
- Perla and Carito are wearing sleeveless shirts when they get the news they will be working outside in a cold front.
- Tano explains that everyone including them will be working to keep fires going. Perla asks how they will stay warm. Marta explains that they will need to put on coats or something. Perla says NOPE; she's going to help Juan. Everyone is like, whatever, Perla. She stomps off and Marta snarks that Perla never changes.
- Lilian and Gracie are sniping about Lilian not telling Gracie before about Gut. David interrupts to look for Sonia. He wants her and Marta to be on food/coffee duty for the workers. Gracie is alarmed; what's up. David fills them in on the cold front. Gracie will help. Lilian will stay with the kids (in the warm house). David thanks her and hustles off. Gracie gripes about having to work in the cold. Lilian advises her to seize the opportunity with Luciana gone and hit on David.
- David addresses the workers, who now all sport appropriate outerwear. Tano is in charge of the wood. Miguel will chop it. Susan will hourly analyze the grapes. Too bad she doesn't have Luciana's help. Susan says she will ask the other workers for help if she needs it (no doubt remembering how much Luciana interrupted her work, lol.) David thanks everyone for loving the earth and pitching in. The workers applaud his pep talk except for shivering Susan.
- Marta makes a good pot of coffee and feels bad everyone is out there in the cold. Sonia prepares food and preaches about how amazing her master Grumpy David is out there. Marta says that David earns their respect for sure (HOW?) but please don't start with her comments. Sonia snarks that despite their differences in class and position, in these difficult times we must help Senor! Marta tells her to keep chopping tomatoes for the sandwiches then. Marta's cell phone rings and it's Gutierrez. She updates him on the vineyard situation and Sonia takes mental notes.
- My notes say Juan/Perla yap yap yap and that sums up that scene. Basically she doesn't want to work and he tells her to work or it will be worse for them if the harvest is lost. They need to look good to Grumpy David. FF>>
- Susan performs her hourly analysis and crunches numbers. If they lose the harvest, they lose a lot of customers. Wow, she's a genius. Gracie stops by looking for David (and a warmer place to help). David is out in the cold and that's where Gracie's help is needed. Ramon comes in with samples to analyze. According to Susan's calculations, things will be OK as long as the temperature stays within seven degrees.
- Fernanda and Bobby want to pitch in and save the harvest. Lilian is like, um that's the employees' job. She holds firm and won't let them go. Fer reassures Bobby that their dad will come through like he always does (grumpy?).
- Miguel tells someone to count the buckets and ensure they are evenly spread throughout. David compliments Miguel on his organizational skills. Miguel says that David taught him well. David says he doesn't always get Miguel. Mig is super passionate about the vineyard and wants to help David, when he could easily be David's opposition. David is surprised that Miguel stayed to help with the situation. (It's called being a competent employee, Dave.) Miguel notes that he could have left when things were under control and he has been a loyal employee through thick and thin. So he doesn't understand what David doesn't understand. David understands, but he doesn't understand why people shift due to their loyalty to women. Miguel says he would do anything for Luciana, but he would always be loyal to his boss. David understands that Miguel is a man of his word, just like David. Miguel says that's why he didn't leave, even though he knows David has feelings for Luciana. They would fight equally for her, but Miguel understands that he's the employee and David is the boss. David tells Miguel they both want Luciana but Miguel has the advantage because he is free to fight for her and can make her happy, and David is not free and does not make her happy. It hurts him to let her go, but that's love too. (The testosterone flowing during this conversation could've kept a few grapes warm.)
- Gracie is kind of helping I guess and comes in to ask for firewood. David tells her not to worry about it, he'll do it, and she should go rest and have coffee. She'll take the coffee, but not the rest, because she is David's loyal partner. So they go off for coffee and wood.
- Carito is kind of helping too and lets Miguel know it. He knows it. Can she get him something to eat? He's had coffee.
- Marta and Sonia comment on how the cold is barbaric and it's good there are things to eat and drink. Sonia goes back into the rapture mode regarding Senor leading his people like the hero of a novel. Marta comments that some look for a prince, and some look for someone to build a castle together with. Sonia asks about Leon and Luciana and if they returned to Mexico. Marta remarks that she didn't think Sonia cared. Sonia tells her that she likes Marta and her kids, but someone whose name she can't say forces her to treat the employees badly. Sonia tells Marta she likes her friendship with Leon and doesn't want to lose it. Marta tells her she doesn't have to, she can just stand up for herself. Sonia tells her she remembers when Marta stood up for Sonia. Lilian can be very rude. Marta tells her it's good she's friends with Leon, because he's very noble. Sonia tells her not to gossip and Marta tells her not to break Leon's heart.
- Lilian conked out with a book in Bobby's room. Fer and Bobby make plans to sneak out. Well Fer does, and Bobby blackmails her into bringing him breakfast in bed for two weeks if he pretends to be asleep and keeps an eye on his grandmother.
- Perla and Carito put the wood into the buckets for burning. Perla bitches and moans. Juan walks in and she pretends to injure her back. He doesn't fall for it and makes her get back to work. FF>>
- Susan is crying about the grapes. Seriously. Remember when she was an actual professional? Anyway, Tano tries to comfort her. Susan says she can't lose this too on top of losing Tano. Tano reassures her that all will be OK. They are about to kiss.
- My notes say Juan/Pera bitch and moan. FF>>
- Carito really is working. Fer comes in and offers to help. And where's Tano? Carito says he's with Susan. Fernanda offers to bring Carito some coffee.
- Susan breaks that embrace with Tano. It just makes the breakup too raw. He's had enough and leaves. Next he runs into age-appropriate Fernanda. She tells him she can't stop thinking of him. She is concerned and wants to help. Tano thinks she means the grapes and tells her that her father has things organized. Fer says it's not fair for her to rest while they work and offers help, which Tano accepts. Fer asks him not to leave her alone and he tells her he'll explain what she should do. They happily leave.
- We get a montage of the workers and David warming up the grapes and chopping wood.

Gracie brings David coffee. David is pleasantly surprised at how well everyone works, including her. He's appreciative. Gracie says it's the least she can do. True That! Sonia interrupts the coffee break to ask what if they need anything. Gracie is like I definitely don't need any more coffee. Sonia says she has made the best coffee and food for Senor David! He thanks her for her hard work. Sonia says she'll be in employee quarters.
- David suggests that Gracie rest, but nope, she will work along David as long as it takes. They start doing the wood loading thing. Apparently David spotted Fer or something, but Gracie tells him not to scold her, as she just wanted to help. Gracie then decides to get out of work by faking a backache. When David asks if she is OK, she asks him for a massage. LOL.
- Tano brings Fer to the employee headquarters to work. Marta is afraid David will catch her and get angry at them all. Tano says that he already did, but said that Fer should work in employee quarters, out of the cold. Fer says she couldn't sleep and wanted to help her dad. Marta notes that of course she found Tano while out "helping." They put Fer on sandwich wrapping duties. Marta checks her phone but no text from her kids. I feel ya Marta. Fer asks if Tano will help her. Marta is like NO. Tano explains that he's on wood. After they leave, Sonia tells Fer that she also has a forbidden love, LOL! Fer tries to play dumb, but Sonia tells her she supports Fer/Tano. Fer says she hopes Sonia won't tell Lilian. Sonia will keep quiet.
- A bunch of cops stop by, led by Gutierrez.

Seriously, the cops stand there while Marta and Gut awkwardly flirt and Sonia and Fer are introduced. Your tax dollars at work, Sonoma! Fer remembers Gut from the hospital. Gut decides to fill in Marta on the investigation into human trafficking. Juan is about to walk in on this but stops to eavesdrop. Marta hopes Gut will catch the bad guys. Gut says the bad guys will get 20 years in prison. Juan does not receive the news warmly.

Points for FerBrat for wanting to help even if her motive isn't the right one. At least she is getting some clue of how important this all is.
David needs to get over the idea that he isn't free to pursue Luciana. Bobby is all for it and although he's the younger child it's FerBrat who is acting like a baby about it.
I always wondered why Lillian didn't look at Adolfo as a possible significant other. She must have read my mind.

Hi everyone!
One of the many things which is frequently commented on (and which I absolutely love, even if at the same time occasionally frustrated by...), is the frequent use of English in this telenovela, one which makes perfect sense, considering that it takes place in California. One of the things which has absolutely delighted me, considering her long and storied career trajectory in telenovelas, was discovering Azela Robinson's actual BRITISH accent. This is not an affect! Ms. Robinson was born and lived the greater part of her youth in Britain- her (English) father was a rather esteemed journalist and her (Mexican) mother was a ballerina and actress. She actually lived and studied in England until she was in her twenties before coming to Mexico, where she has lived ever since. I'm still not sure how many other actresses (if any) in the world can say that they performed Shakespeare's Lady Macbeth in English IN England, and in Spanish... but Azela Robinson can!
Full disclosure here: Miss Robinson has always been a favourite of mine (being a Canadian, and considering I'm writing about a Brit, I figured i had better include the 'u' in the word that to Americans would be 'favorite', even though personally it never made any sense to me!!), and I admire both her, and her work, immensely. She is both a single-mother, and has also been a passionate advocate for people suffering from bipolar disorder, of which she is one. She has gone on record as stating that her battles with bipolar disorder is perhaps one of the reasons which she prefers playing visceral, extreme characters- because of her struggles with emotional extremes- she can relate. It could even be said that she is at her best when she is near feral. For those of you who missed the incredible YNCELH, here is a clip of her bitter, abusive, rage-filled Josefa:

And, further back in her career trajectory, her brutal, magnificent, evil Apolonia in 'Contra viento y marea'. This scene at the end in which she brutalizes and terrorizes poor Marlene Favela (leading to Apolonia attempting to bury Natalia alive... she is of course rescued by Sebastian Rulli's 'Sebastian', in spite of it being revealed that Sebastian is, in fact, the long-lost son of the evil Apolonia- yes, it was THAT kind of telenovela...) is still almost uncomfortable to watch in its intensity (note the red marks on Sra. Favela's face):

And who could ever treat poor Beatriz Sheridan that way???
'CVYM' is a telenovela that flew under most people's radars but, well, was just absolutely fantastic fun (and where is Carlos when I need him? I know it to be a favorite of his as well...). The cast alone- the young Sebastian Rulli, Marlene Favela (fresh from 'Gata salvaje'), Adriana Fonseca, Alexis Ayala, Alberto Estrella, Adela Robinson as the villain, Arturo Peniche, the young Jorge Poza and Fabian Robles, and two great 'grand dames' of Mexican arts- Evita Munoz and the wonderful Beatriz Sheridan in her last ever role (a lead role) as Apolonia's mother, Carlota (who in the end poisons her own daughter in a murder-suicide, in order to both save her daughter and kill the monster that she helped to create). CVYM had- unquestionably- more SLAPS! than any other novela than I have ever seen, and tonnes of stuff going on at all times. It was great fun!!!

Ms. Robinson's was also part of the cast of the famed production of 'La Casa de Bernarda Alba' from 2002 (the cast was a 'who's who' of Mexican actresses- Ofelia Guilmain, Maria Rubio, Laura Zapata, Olivia Bucio, Adela Robinson, and Angelica Vale), and is a noted interpreter of the role of Martha in 'Who's Afraid of Virgina Woolf?'.
Her accent here in VeA is an attempt to partially 'Americanize' her natural British accent- Lilian BEING British, but having lived in the States much of her life and having been INVOLVED with mostly latino men (having borne children with one of them). So, trying to adopt SOME aspects of an American accent (and, YES, though it may sound strange- there really IS such a thing) into a natural British one. (Now, if only her Lilian was given more to actually DO... but then, if only EVERYONE here was given more to actually DO!! Such a talented cast... )
In short, a very interesting and passionate person and actress. I hope you all enjoyed this little 'back-story' on her!

Great job DY77. I felt the same way about Perla and Juan, just blah, blah, blah. Perla is soooooo lazy. She was really awful last night. Carito earned points with me because she is naturally a hard worker and down inside, she really cares about others. I think Perla is just a very bad influence on her. Perla is the true mean girl in this story. Oh and I so LOVED that screen shot of Juan peering through the door. It reminded me of Jack Nicholson in “The Shining.”
Just wanted to comment on what was going on with the kitchen brigade. Did everyone catch the huge pot that Marta was making coffee and throwing in the canela (cinnamon sticks)? Apparently in Mexico this is the old fashioned way of making coffee for a huge crowd. They use INSTANT coffee with a huge pot flavored with canela. They have been doing it this way for many years and apparently, still do it this way even though large coffee makers are available. Everyone loves it done this way because it’s “the way mama made it”. It is called “café de olla”. There is a recipe on Food Network by Marcela Valladolid if you want to look it up.

Just when I think Dave can't get any dumber or spineless we get scenes like the "I want to help...oooo, rub my back!" BS DisGracie ran on him! Glad my DVR cut off just as she was cooing and sighing! Idiot!

I dont watch vino for all the reasons listed by many commenters and recappers but I do love Azela Robinson. Curiously I took a break feom novelas for 2 or 3 years and CVYM got me back into them. It had an impressive cast, a fast paced story full of circo twists and one of the sickest but funniest villains in Apolonia Rudel de Serrano. I still have fond memories of all the messes shed get into but never funner than when Perla attacked her in her own house when she found out she left her in a brothel in purpose. Those actresses when HAM

I hung on every single word. The title was marvelous, the screen shots perfection and the summary was sensational.
I had to pare down my list of favorites but had to keep "the grapes are getting cold, Gracie, Fer and Sonia are getting bold, and the plot devices are getting old!", "The actual couple with potential worth being actually invested in shares a little peck and hug after this gift exchange", "Juan does not want to be interrupted by a pesky cold front" and of course the fab "The testosterone flowing during this conversation could've kept a few grapes warm".
I also enjoyed every second of Leon and Sonia. Mismatched? Probably. The probability of actually becoming a couple? Unlikely. Still, I had to smile at Leon's delight at the book. He is entraced. And can we blame him? Nopis. We are as well. As you noted, "He will clearly never wash his cheek again".
Sonia was also in another of my favorite scenes last night. "Sonia and Lilian commiserate over cookies and tequila about their weakness for hot Latino men with hot muscles and attitudes". Another unlikely duo finding common ground. This has me wondering though, is there anyone Sonia could not get along with? How could anyone resist that mostly sweet, if off the beaten path personality!
"back to the couples the writers think we care about". Appreciate your reporting all of it, even though I was grumbling that Susan's wailing was taking valuable screen time away from Sonia. Sigh.
Brian's appearance was a rather bold move on his part. Perhaps he doesn't care and is trying to get "caught" by Lili so he can end things for once and all with her and face the inevitable consequences.
Too bad Gracie continues to spew poison in Fer's ear. But David is a grown man and needs to decide his own future. If he wants Luci that badly (and I believe he does), he needs to start acting like the father he is and tell Fernanda he will choose who he wishes, and hopefully have her support.

How about the scene where Imanol had just hit Sandra (Adriana Fonseca), and was then turned into the best PSA against violence against women EVER, having been left at the mercy of both Alberto Estrella (in full gangster mode, with slicked back hair) growling "una mujer, no se lo pega" AND Azela Robinson both bitch-slapping him ad nauseum, while Beatriz Sheridan jumps up and down in the background screaming "MATALO!!! MATALO! MATALO!!!"

Choice recap, dy. Particularly "yap yap yap" and "the couples the writers think we care about" (I'll give them an inch on the Susan/Tano/Fer thing, because of Mar Contreras, but...yeah...)
This was a "little things" episode, though--the big stuff wasn't as interesting as the little moments, like Leon geeking out over Sonia's book gift or Marta side-eyeing Sonia's pornstar-voice "Mi senor..." thing or Sonia and Lilian's tequila/cookie-fueled almost-rant about men (boo on Graciela for breaking that up, the evil bitch). Let alone Sonia and Graciela squeeing over David with an axe. The pinnacle, though, was Graciela duping David with the oldest trick in the book and all the subsequent "OMG, yes, he's touching me!" faces Kimberly Dos Ramos busted out.
That said: Gutierrez showing up at the Servants' Luxury Townhouse at oh-dark-thirty, with his So Obviously Gringo officers in tow, just to check on Marta? And Juan conveniently eavesdropping on them while they're talking about an illegal immigration ring that, AFAIK, Gutierrez hasn't mentioned before? This is why I get El Talisman flashbacks from you, show!

La Casa de Bernarda Alba is a truly powerful and shocking play that's been done in many different countries and different languages. There is an excellent English-language version from 1991 starring Dame Glenda Jackson but, alas, it's not on YouTube anymore. Other Televisa actresses have been in different productions of it. Diana Bracho played one of the daughters when she was much younger and I hope she's had a chance to play Bernarda, as she has clearly channeled her in her portrayal of Gabriela Elizondo.
