La Candidata, Capítulo 51; Thursday August 24, 2017: Teresa asks Alonso to kill Gerardo

We begin where we left off at the end of episode 50, Regina walking up the stairs to the hospital for her meeting and Teresa trying to forcefully grab Regina. “Don’t touch me!” says Regina and tries to shoo Teresa away. After Teresa skillfully fell down the steps, Regina and a couple others try to run and help her up. She is not hurt, puts on a big scene, and doesn’t look any worse for the wear. (Oh darn! Not even a scraped knee!) “Stop treating me like an invalid!” She looks hatefully at Regina and then says, “If I lose my baby…” and she storms off.

At the Omar San Roman home, Marcia comes to Omar and asks if his family is going to make her go away. She tells him that Magda is evil and wants to pit him against her. He says to her that she’s just jealous and calls her Natalia. She corrects and says she is Marcia. “And you, who are you?” says Omar. “I’m your woman and we have been happy and together for a long time.” “Let’s go to bed, I want to be with you” says Omar. Marcia says, “well they are about to serve us tea, would you like to wait?” But Omar says, “You prefer tea to being with me?” So they go off to the bedroom.

José arrives at the door where Natalia is staying at her son’s home and comes to apologize. He explains what happened, he got drunk, Blanca came over, etc…He asks for a second chance to make her happy. But Natalia turns him down flat. However, she says she will help him out with finding his next job but doesn’t want him to come back. She let him know that she will call him if she needs to. He says he didn’t mean to hurt her.

In the hallway of the hospital, Alonso, still fuming is harassing Emilio. Regina tries to break things up as he says, “Where are you going to live now that you are filing for divorce? Certainly not at the Governor’s house!”

Regina tells Daniela she is worried about what happened with Teresa. Daniela reminds her that Teresa is crazy. Regina sees Gerardo and explains what happened, but here comes Alonso to rant about the petition for divorce. He doesn’t have much time because Escalante approaches the three and wants a photo op of the three candidates together.

Mauro gives a grand speech, the ribbons are cut. Alonso whispers to Regina that she is starting a war and stepping into Hell. Later in the restroom, Lorena Sanchez appears and gives her a flashdrive. She says Regina will be interested in it and leaves it on the counter.

Noemi walks up to Alonso’s place just as Natalia and José are ending their conversation. “Oh no, you didn’t give into him, now did you, Natalia?” Nat assures her that she did not, she is just going to help him out with finding work. Then Noemi has the bright idea that he can go to Mario for work, but Nat shakes her head and says, “Did you come to counsel me?” “No” says Noemi. “I came to pack a bag for Regina. I just found out she filed for divorce. She and Emiliano are staying with us.”

Hernán meets with his boss (what is that guy’s name?) who tells him that Fernando Escalante is now the major shareholder at the station and they are going to support the person he is supporting for President. Hernán say, “Oh no, does this mean we have to support Alonso?” “No, Escalante wants us to support Regina Barcenas for President. He wants her to be President.” Hernán is very surprised.

Gerardo arrives home and sees Teresa sulking on the couch in her robe. “What happened?” says Gerardo. Teresa says, “it was that ingrate’s fault (Regina) who pushed me and I lost the baby.” She starts crying and tells him to stop running around with their baby’s murderer.

Regina and Emiliano arrive at her parents’ home and Mario is none too happy about it and tells her that she is in the wrong and is going to regret the divorce. She cries to him and says he should support her because he is her father. Noemi goes and prepares the bedrooms.

Gerardo tells Ximena that her mother lost the baby and Teresa blames Regina. He doesn’t believe Regina is to blame and tells her that her mother is a manipulator. Ximena doesn’t believe that her mother would plan losing her own child on purpose or manipulate things that way. (This girl is so naïve!)

Alonso arrives at his father’s home and walks into the bedroom and finds Omar fast asleep. He gazes down at him for a few seconds but a scantily clad Marcia walks in from the bathroom. She explains that Omar took his pills and fell asleep. He says since she is there, he does want to talk to her. She asks if he can please let her get dressed first. He asks, “Should I leave the room or not?” says Alonso. She says, “Yes, please.” So he walks out. After she gets dressed they talk downstairs and Alonso tells her, “I know why you are here in this house. You want to steal my father’s money.” Marcia says, “Yes. Anything else I say, you won’t believe, so let’s not waste time.” Alonso then asks, “So what, have you fallen in love with him?” Marcia says, “I just want to stay with him and make him happy for the time he has left.” “I don’t believe you” says Alonso. Marcia smiles and says, “Well then I’ll tell you what you want to hear. I’m going to take all your father’s money and ruin him. I’m going to sleep around too including with you if I need to.” He moves in to kiss her and she pulls away.

Regina calls Gerardo and he does tell her that Teresa did lose the baby but does not blame her. Regina feels very badly about it and feels responsible. He ends the conversation by telling her he loves her.

Next morning, the Barcenas family is at breakfast. Regina says something about negotiating with Alonso. Emiliano says he’s been talking to Escalante who is going to help him out with financing a sports program. Regina warns him about this and tells him to be careful getting involved. He then goes off to school. Mario asks Regina about how she is going to finance her campaign. She tells him a few resources but she does not want him involved. She gets up to leave to office.

Alonso apparently fell asleep at Omar’s house on the couch. Omar walks in and seems at first he doesn’t recognize Alonso and says, “What are you doing here?” “It’s me, Alonso, your son!” Omar says he knows that but wonders why he is there and if he lost his family. Then Alonso explains that they need to talk and they leave the room. Marcia is in the background looking on as they walk out.

At Regina’s office, Daniela is typing away and Regina walks in and asks if she has viewed the files from the flash drive. Daniela says, “You still haven’t told me who gave this to you.” Finally Regina admits it came from Lorena Sanchez. “You are not going to like this,” says Daniela. Then Daniela goes on to explain that the drive contains every transaction detail from Omar San Roman and his business partners to affect medical prices on medications. “Can it all be proven?” says Regina. Daniela says that all if it can be investigated and traced. Daniela asks Regina if she wants her to start any action on this but Regina says no. She doesn’t want any big problems, war, violence, etc…Regina said that if the electorate wants to vote for her, she wants them to vote for her because of herself, her ideas and her projects. Not because of this other thing. But still, this information still needs to be known. She instructs Daniela to give it to Gerardo’s people. One other thing that Daniela tells Regina is that she is not responsible for what happened to Teresa.

Teresa is playing the “boo-hoo” poor pitiful me game with her daughter and asks her a last favor. She asks Ximena to remember all the pain her father has ever caused their family.

Escalante and Regina meet together and he gives her the standard political game about what he wants for the country. A good economy, more money in people’s pockets, a chicken in every pot, and to re-distribute the wealth. He also wants a bank that will help the poor. But Regina says, “But that’s what every candidate wants.” He goes on to talk about this socialized program for banking that will loan people the money who need it. Regina replies that this certainly will take a lot of resources. Regina tells him that she is not going to deny that his proposals are very interesting. He claims he is being very sincere and wants her trust. Then she tells him that she likes him better today than she did the other day. He brings up that he wants to help Emilio with a sports program for the poor children. They shake on it. He says, “Regina, you are the woman who was created to change this country.” (I so want to be snarky here, but I will refrain.)

Mauro meets with a group of men in his office who have the money for Alonso’s campaign. He says that in their folders is a description of what they agreed on. He goes on to say with the reduction in taxes and supporting employers, they are going to bring in a lot of money. They all agree that in order to be happy, everyone has to be happy. One of the men hands a briefcase full of money to Mauro and says, “With this you’ll be very happy.” But Mauro says something about, “Every month, remember?” They all nod and agree. Magda shows them all to the door. Alone with the cash, Mauro takes out a couple bundles for himself and stuff them in his inside suit pocket.

In Regina’s office, Daniela and Regina are talking about all Regina can do and how she can win. Daniela tells her for once in her life, stop being so inflexible and enjoy her life. Then Gerardo walks in and wants to talk. He says, “I don’t believe a word that Teresa says.” Regina says she is sorry and Gerardo says it was not her fault. (Teresa losing the baby.)

Alonso walks into the office where Mauro just closed the briefcase full of money. Mauro says, “We just had visitors.” Alonso says, as he is opening up his laptop, “Did you get everything straightened out with them?” Mauro says, “That quantity will come every month.” Alonso looks down at his laptop with the video from the hidden camera and sees that Mauro stole some money out of the briefcase to put in his suit pocket. “You know what? Alonso says, “I HATE traitors! I HATE those who rob from me.” Alonso then pulls out the stacks of money from inside Mauro’s suit jacket and says he wants Mauro gone right now and never wants to see him again. Mauro turns around, leaves and is mortified by what just happened. Magda is very concerned and thinks Mauro needs a doctor. But they are interrupted by Teresa who barges into Alonso’s office.

Wow, just wow! Looks like Escalante is meeting with the country’s mafia bosses/druglords and is getting them to make nice with one another, shaking hands. The only rule is that neither one should intrude on the other’s territory. “This doesn’t end here, Chulo.” Escalante asks, “Are you going to continue this war?” Chulo says, “There is no other way.”

In Alonso’s office, Teresa says they have common enemies together. His wife is her enemy and Gerardo is his enemy. “So what do you want from me? Says Alonso. “I want you to murder my husband.”

In Gerardo’s office, Regina and Gerardo are together and he tells her that he just wants to be with her.

Daniela discusses with Ignacio about looking at what is on the flash drive and he wonders why Regina doesn’t want to use the information. Then Ximena passes by and wants to know if her father is in his office. But Ignacio tells him he is meeting with Senator Blanco. She at first is going to leave, but it appears she decides to barge in unannounced and finds Regina and her father together. “Dad! This is the woman who caused Mom to lose the baby!”

Good work, Cynthia. This was a hell of an episode.

We finally know that Escalante is in bed with the local drug cartels. This will be a very shocking revelation and Regina's desire to keep her distance from him has been a good instinctive move. She should have him investigated.

Jose will be better off on his own. It is inevitable that he will want a woman his own age eventually, so Natalia's making the right decision. It will spare her a lot of pain later on.

Alonso just hit a new low with coming on to Marcia.

Now for Teresa....

Her histrionics took place on the steps of a hospital. Nobody should have let her leave. Unless she is exposed she will be Regina's Amy Robsart. Since Ignacio wants to see his boss elected he needs to expose this poor excuse for a human being ASAP. If the doctor is truly keeping confidentiality Ignacio is the only one who can do this.

He and Gerardo should be asking themselves why Teresa didn't take to her bed and remain housebound if this was truly a high-risk pregnancy. No way in the world should she have been traipsing around the city, shopping and carrying bags, and wearing heels to formal events. And since when is he still her husband if they're divorced?

I have no hope for Ximena unless she ultimately turns her back on Teresa. Stupid little girl to do an about-face.

Thank you, Cynthia. I really enjoyed your recap.

I am wondering about Mauro who was in full melt down mode. What will he do?

Urban, that is one of my few criticisms of this otherwise excellent novela: are Teresa and Gerardo divorced? If so, why is she living in his home and why does he allow her to continue to represent herself as his wife? He needs a lawyer.

I am done with Ximena and Emiliano. They just annoy me.

Regina was smart to get rid of the flash drive.

Jarifa: I'm in agreement with you on Regina getting rid of the flash-drive. What was in It ?

UA: Teresa asking Alonso to put a contract out on Gerardo.

Cynthia: I love your recap. Precise & detailed.

Jarifa, this is annoying me, too.

What I think happened is that the writers initially decided that Gerardo and Teresa were separated for a long time but not actually divorced (like my parents) but during week 2 or 3 decided that they were divorced because he began referring to her as his "ex-wife." I wish they had made that clearer by having Gerardo say "Our divorce was final X years ago; we are no longer married."

She is BSC either way and a liability to his life and Ximena's, even if he were a CPA instead of an honest politician.

That she is looking to have him murdered is all about "If I can't own him, nobody else can."

Urban, ITA she is BSC. Norvind is doing such a great job, it is hard to even watch her because she is so despicable and unrelenting.

Excellent recap, Cynthia! Jarifa: And Norvind was also excellent as the sweet wife of the ruthless real estate developer in Para volver a amar. In that one, she just wanted to study and learn, as her husband had promised her she could do in Mexico City where they went to live. Inspired by the main character, she hires a tutor to prepare her for the university and in the end has left the jerk of a husband and is enrolled full time there. Anyway, back to LC: Good for Natalia, standing up for herself and graciously helping José in his job search. She seems to finally be out from under male oppression. I hope Teresa is exposed as a liar quickly! Whoa! Mauro is crooked too. Since he was filmed and dismissed by Alonso, his one true love, will he commit suicide? Escalante just gets more and more evil. Drug kingpins indeed! Will that state socialized bank be a way to launder their drug money? I wonder if Alonso will actually try to murder Gerardo.

Thanks everyone for your insightful comments.

SpanProf: Thanks for bringing that up about the money laundering. YES I DID hear Escalante say something about that and forgot to mention it. *I was typing while I was watching* and could not get every sentence. But yes, this is about laundering the drug money and trying to keep the peace with the mafia drug cartels before the election.

I kept hearing too that Gerardo and Teresa are divorced. He has said it many times. The only thing I can think of is that in the eyes of the church, they are still considered married, while in the eyes of the government, they are divorced. So that is maybe why Teresa goes around saying that they are still married. I think Gerardo feels guilt over the divorce and is pressured by his daughter. All kids fantasize about their parents getting back together again.

Alonso is a dog who will sleep with any young gal who shakes her hips. He is so evil and immoral.

Mauro should have been smarter and figured out that he was on candid camera before he decided to steal the money. In this electronic age, cameras are everywhere.

We weren't even told that they had been married in the church, unless that was to satisfy her parents.

Ximena is truly empty-headed for her about face on the issue of her parents' marriage. She started out crying to him to move in with him because Teresa was driving her insane and now shw wants Gerardo to come right back into the snake pit.

Oh I went back to the video posted on Univision's website and went to the part where Escalante is meeting with the drug lords/mafia bosses. What he said was this: "The truth is that the money laundering operations will simplify when Regina becomes President."

Urban, I agree about Ximena being empty headed. On one hand she complains that it's too difficult to live with her mother. Then on the other hand, she keeps taking Teresa's side against her father because she believes Teresa's lies. She has no common sense!

I am assuming that Gerardo and Teresa were married in the church. Somewhere along the line I thought she said in a previous show something like, "In the eyes of God, we are still married." From what I understand, most people who are Roman Catholic in Mexico have two weddings. One is civil by a justice of the peace and the other is in the church. Clergy in Mexico are not deputized to perform legal weddings, they are only for ceremonial purposes. My daughter and her husband went to a wedding of his cousin in Guarlalajara. The couple was already married and had a civil marriage, but they wanted a church wedding. So they had the big church wedding and reception. They already had a couple of kids together too.

Cynthia Thank you again for a stupendous and thorough recap.

What I know about Tere and Gerardo is that they are indeed divorced, they were living separately, until Gerardo's party thought it was better if they lived together for appearances. Which at that time I thought was ridiculous because they are divorced. The reason she continues "living" at Gerardo's is because she just does not get that he does not want her there. He has kicked her out countless times.

The whole kingpin spin came out of left field for me, it seems kind of late in the game to start this new story line right? Anyway we'll see where it goes, but it sure got a lot darker last night. As if prostitution, drugs, murder attempts, murders, back-stabbings, infidelity, abusive relationships, incest, back-room dealings, etc. etc. was not dark enough.

Teresa was put in Gerardo's place apparently for her own safety after the hospitalization for the murder/suicide. She should have stayed locked up in the manicomio.

Sandie, yes that too, thank you for reminding us about the campaign wanting Gerardo to appear as a "happy family" situation and not tell the public about their divorce. But also in Teresa's mind she continues to perpetuate the idea that are still "married" and I believe it is probably because they may have been married in the church. Nothing has ever been said specifically, it's just my assumption.

Urban, I do remember that Teresa was placed at Gerardo's place for her own safety after the whole thing with the oven. She should have been sent to the psychiatric ward instead.

I saw this episode a couple days ago, but missed that last line by Ximena. I've been waiting for this recap to go up so I could decide whether I still cared about Ximena or not, and Nope! Done with her. She's old enough to not be so stupid. She's seen people, mostly her mother, lie and manipulate, and she still allows herself to believe. He youth is not an excuse for being so dumb. Someone needs to sit her down and remind her that her parents are divorced (or whatever they are) and that her mother is a manipulative jerk. And then Gerardo can remind Teresa about the divorce and kick her out of the house. Had it with both of these women, and with Gerardo allowing their nonsense.

But still rooting for Marcia! Magda demanded that she stay and take care of Omar, despite knowing what Omar was like, so that's what Marcia is doing. I just hope she doesn't end up having to sleep with Alonso or Mario. She needs to tell everyone to suck it and keep steeling Omar's money.

Kelly

Kelly I totally agree with you about Marcia, she has been dealt a tough hand. I don't see her getting out of this unscathed, but I do hope she gets out alive, with some money, a lot of money. She deserves it after having to put up with that pig. I am referring to all 3 men. The trio of tyrants as I referred to them a while back.
