Mi Marido Tiene Familia # 45, 10.24.2017: Hell on Training Wheels

Credit to Diana for inspiring the title

Previously (courtesy of Jarifa): Blanca doesn't feel valued or when she is not consulted for certain decisions. Nobody asks what she would like to do. She also has desires. Julieta asks how many. Blanca says a lot but they are all pretty simple. Blanca would like to be more independent and, for example, learn how to drive. On the spot, Julieta decides that she is going to teach Blanca how to drive. They drop the laundry until later and Blanca has her first driving lesson. Julieta calls Luz to make sure everything is in order, so Luz tells her to have a good time with her mother-in -law. Julieta can’t believe these women were brought up in such a way. She confides to Luz that what’s strange to her is that she feels like she is starting to love Blanca.

RobPablo is at the bakery engaged in his own lesson. He shows Eugenio his first roll which is a bit odd in shape, but Eugenio tells him originality is always good. They put the bread rolls in the oven.

Hold on!! Blanca is in the driver’s seat ready for her lesson so Julieta gives her some oral directions first.  She also tells her too relax, breathe…Blanca is excited, but nervous and thinks it’s too many directions. When Blanca wants to borrow Julieta’s gloves, Julieta tells her they will only be in the way. Blanca is very grateful that Julieta is interested in helping her accomplish her dreams…and hopes she remembers everything Julieta told her to do. When the car doesn’t move, Blanca thinks something is wrong with the car; so Julieta tells her she needs to turn it on. Blanca fumbles with some buttons and turns on the wipers and radio; so Julieta directs her to the key…she needs to turn the key. Blanca thinks these cars are very different from her time…one horse power. Blanca turns on the car and puts it in drive; the car takes off so Blanca slams on the brakes. Julieta tells her to accelerate slowly and guides her, but Blanca looks at Julieta who then yells not to look at her, she needs to look forward. After Julieta keeps guiding her and yelling directions, Blanca tells her not to yell at her because she scares her. A few minutes later, Blanca keeps driving, so proud of herself for not hitting any cars that she lets go of the wheel and again turns to look at Julieta who grabs the wheel and reminds her to look forward. As Blanca makes a turn, she accelerates; so Julieta yells at her to step on the brakes.

At the bakery, RobPablo and Eugenio take the bread out of the oven. RobPablo says the bread smells good and hopes it tastes as good as it looks. Eugenio takes a bite of a roll and, as RobPablo remembers pouring all the salt into the bread. Eugenio makes a face and comments that the bread is very salty. They laugh.

On the road, Blanca is grateful that Julieta is teaching her to drive but sometimes she gets a little too loud. As Julieta is telling Blanca that she just gets nervous, they both yell and Blanca hits the brakes.

At the Córsega’s. Imelda styles Frida’s hair with Imelda’s favorite hairdo and thinks Frida looks like a princess. Frida doesn’t like it and refuses to go to school looking like that. Imelda insists she goes to school, but Frida thinks she looks like a girl from a horror movie.

Once stopped, Julieta tells Blanca she is “blanca” (white) …she almost crashed and could have killed them.

At the Córsega’s, Frida locks herself in the bathroom. When Imelda demands that she open the door and respect her, Frida yells back that Imelda didn’t respect her hair. She looks like an old lady. Linda walks by and comments that someone in the family finally has the nerve to say how things really are. When Imelda snaps back at her, Linda wonders if she prefers a granddaughter that does whatever Imelda tells her to do. Imelda sarcastically says, “Of course not, she can do whatever she wants” and walks away.

Audifaz is at his work office. His boss tells him he needs to deliver envelopes to people who owe money.

At the bakery, RobPablo agrees that the bread is too salty. He confesses he was trying to play a joke on Eugenio, but he went too far. They wonder what to do with the bread. RobPablo hates throwing it away, but Eugenio suggests they use it to make pudding…everything has a solution. When RobPablo compares it to life…they have to start again and reinvent themselves; Eugenio agrees. RobPablo then thinks about Blanca and hopes she is doing well with her driving lesson.

Blanca regrets having agreed to the driving lessons. She knows she probably deserves to be yelled at, but demands respect. When Julieta reminds her they almost crashed, Blanca emphasizes “almost” and points out that it was Julieta who offered to teach her. As Blanca hands the keys back to Julieta and tells her she doesn’t want her as a teacher anymore, the driver of the car they almost hit yells at Blanca and calls her a “veija bruta” (stupid woman); he knew it had to be a woman driver. Julieta defends Blanca, “No one calls her ‘bruta.” She explains that she is teaching Blanca to drive, so the man mocks the fact that it is a woman teaching a woman! They start arguing and he tells them to go do their laundry. Julieta yells at him and demands he apologize to Blanca, but the man refuses because he didn’t do anything wrong. Blanca doesn’t need his apologies. After the man and Blanca continue yelling and Julieta insists on an apology, they all start jabbering at the same time. Blanca pinches the man’s nose as Julieta starts videotaping the man who continues harassing them until Blanca kicks him.

At the Córsega’s, Ana arrives at the bakery and tells Lazaro to go tell Imelda they have arrived. She goes into the bakery, so RobPablo and Eugenio greet her. When Ana comments that she didn’t know RobPablo liked baking…she just can’t imagine him as a baker, Eugenio tells her RobPablo had always wanted to learn as a child. RobPablo jokes that he doesn’t have a future in it, but insists she taste the bread he just made as he gestures two thumbs down. After RobPablo leaves, Ana remarks she is glad they are getting close. Eugenio shares that he doesn’t have that much time to enjoy RobPablo’s presence; it’s hard to accept that he will not recover the 34 lost years.

Back at the postponed driving lesson, Julieta drives as she talks to Blanca who is walking. Julieta tries to convince Blanca to continue with the lesson, but Blanca is convinced she is too stupid to learn; she’s walking back to her house. Julieta apologizes and tells her to try again. Blanca complains that now Julieta is giving her orders…everyone orders her around. Julieta refuses to stand with arms crossed and let Blanca give up on her dreams. When she asks how many dreams Blanca has given up, Blanca thinks people don’t always fulfill their dreams, but Julieta thinks Blanca has given up more than her share. As Blanca cries, Julieta tries to calm her and insists she get in the car. After Julieta tells Blanca that she likes being her teacher, Blanca concedes and thanks her for defending her against that brute.

At the Córsega’s, Imelda and Lazaro are on their way out with Frida who has her hair down. Imelda tells Lazaro they need to hurry, but Frida says they don’t have to run. They run into Polita in the hallway, so Imelda asks about Aris. Polita shares that Aris has entered an academic competition; he wants to be the best student in his school. When Imelda says she is glad Aris didn’t take after Audifaz; Polita defends Audifaz saying that he is very intelligent; Imelda just didn’t allow him to do what he wanted or pursue his talents…he wanted to be a writer. Imelda retorts that Audifaz is still alive and can do something with his life; he shouldn’t blame others for not doing what he wanted to do.

Blanca continues her lesson. She is driving somewhat better, but Julieta reminds her to always look forward. When Blanca wonders how women drive and put makeup, Julieta tells her to also use her mirrors. As Julieta tells Blanca to go a little faster, Blanca hears a lot of cars honking behind them and gets more nervous. A line of cars follows behind as Blanca moves along slowly; among them is Ana’s SUV. Imelda wants Lazaro to hurry, so Lazaro explains that there is a car going very slowly. Imelda complains that someone who doesn’t know how to drive and wants that filth to get out of the way. Meanwhile, Julieta gets Blanca to park. As they pass, Ana recognizes Blanca, so Imelda tells Lazaro to stop so she can straighten things out. As Frida cries that they will expel her for being late, Ana gets frustrated and yells at Frida not to get hysterical. Lazaro escorts Imelda to Julieta’s car. As Julieta tells Blanca to relax, Imelda walks up and wants to know what she is doing causing so much chaos. Blanca nervously stutters, but finally tells Imelda she wants to learn to drive. Imelda thinks she’s gone crazy citing that old parrots don’t learn to talk; she thinks they will cause a tragedy and wonders if Eugenio knows about this or what he will have to say. After Julieta asks what’s wrong with learning to drive, Imelda mounts her antiquated high horse and, using a calm, demeaning voice, states that every family has their own customs; and this is not one of their customs. She points out that Julieta is pregnant and she should go home and put on her apron (I’m surprised she didn’t tell her she had to be barefoot!). After Imelda tells Julieta to respect the customs of her new family, she leaves. Julieta stands in disbelief and hugs Blanca who rests her head on Julieta looking defeated.

Julieta and Blanca return to the Córsega home. Blanca thanks Julieta for bringing her back and is sorry about everything, but Julieta tells her there is nothing to be sorry for; today was great day. Blanca reflects that she has stopped doing so many things, so Julieta insists they will continue; Blanca needs to learn how to park. When Blanca states she is so angry about everything, Julieta feels the same…women shouldn’t judge other women. Julieta then suggests they have coffee one of these days…or a cup of wine or mescal, but Blanca suggests tea because of the baby. Julieta would like to know more about Blanca; she realizes she is sometimes rude, but there are things she holds in and carries with her. Blanca nods and is more than happy to listen to her whenever she wants. After Julieta leaves and Blanca cries as she lays and curls up on her bed.

At Cklass, Julieta confides to Luz that, when she is with Blanca, she sometimes feels like she is dealing with a small child who is told what to do and what not to do. Luz points out that she is getting to know a person she initially disliked. Julieta agrees and would like to get something special for Blanca.

At the foundation, RobPablo finds out that David has been accepted at an orphanage which happens to be the same one where he was taken. Max worries about how David will react but RobPablo reminds Max that David can’t stay there. He reassures Max that the orphanage will help find David a good family. RobPablo then asks about Max’s girlfriend but Max clarifies that the girl is not his girlfriend. RobPablo points out that the worst thing that could happen would be if the girl says “no” and he could find someone that will value him. Just then, Daphne approaches RobPablo and tells him she found out about the foundation and wants to volunteer as a psychologist. RobPablo thinks she could definitely help at this moment…with David who is very special.

Later, RobPablo talks to David who doesn’t want to leave the foundation; so RobPablo promises him that, wherever he gets placed, he will make sure it is the best place for him. He asks David to confide in him and assures him he will go visit him every day; David will not be alone. RobPablo hugs David and, as he imagines himself as a child at a table with his arms extended, tenderly tells David everything will be alright.

As they drive along, RobPablo tells Julieta that he still sees a lot of emotional pain and doubts in David. Julieta comments that people will suffer the traumas of their younger years for the rest of their lives. RobPablo then mentions that Daphne will be volunteering at the foundation. Julieta says “ok,” but is somewhat dismayed, so RobPablo adds that he thinks Daphne can help with many of the children; so Julieta tells him it’s his decision; she has no problem with it (but her look says otherwise).

As RobPablo and Julieta approach their apartment door they see a sign directing them to go to Blanca’s home. As they enter Blanca’s home, everyone claps. There is a big wrapped gift in the middle of the room.

Up on the roof, Mari doesn’t want Xavi to live there thinking no one cares about him. Her family is her family. When Xavi comments that he doesn’t know how to repay all that she has done for him, she replies that the best payment is knowing him. He is sorry he isn’t what she thought, but she tells him he is a marvelous human being. He needs to think positive and tells him to close his eyes and repeat after her: “That famous manager with the strange name will call me.” Afterwards, Xavi grabs his guitar as they go down to join her family.

At the Córsega’s, Julieta looks excited as she wonders what the gift could be; and RobPablo is anxious see it, too. They remove the wrapping from the crib that Dani made…with much love for her niece/nephew. Julieta loves it; everything is perfect. Blanca tells Julieta they did it to show how happy the entire family is with the arrival of this baby. As Blanca and Julieta give each other a long, sincere hug, everyone smiles. Blanca feels very happy to have everything prepared for the baby, but what makes her the happiest is the hug they just gave each other. Blanca then adds that the baby will make her a grandma for a second time; it’s the least they could do for them. Juls thanks everyone, starting with Imelda. She then thanks Dani and tells her she loves the color. Imelda chimes in that Ana bought lots of toys, but Ana tells them they haven’t arrived. After RobPablo and Julieta think about how they have to start preparing the baby’s room, Imelda recalls it was the same as when RobPablo was born. When they start talking about the past, Dani asks Imelda to leave those memories behind, but RobPablo thinks that it’s difficult to not think about the past. He then shares his memory of a woman taking him from the market to the orphanage, but he just can’t seem to see her face. The moment is interrupted when Mari arrives with Xavi.

Amalia is at her class complaining that her teacher is ruder every day. He tells her she did well and they will see each other later, but she wants to tell him something because her father taught her to say things when she felt them. He wants to talk later, but she insists they talk now. She understands that he doesn’t like her and that he thinks that everything she does is to get his attention. When he denies it, she knows he’s lying…men lose their attractiveness even though they have muscles they try to hide. He gives all his attention to her sister to get away from her. When he still doesn’t understand, Amalia explains that she decides when she will leave…but she says it with kindness.

Julieta is at Blanca’s kitchen table as Blanca cooks. Julieta is worried about what Imelda said, but Blanca tells her she is used to it. Julieta thinks those are things you just can’t get used to. Blanca confides that she has spent years getting used to things. Life is just that way…demonstrating that things are just the way they are. Julieta would never give up who she is…that’s probably why she’s a bit upset. She feels she is living everything she hoped she would never live, though there are some things she is enjoying. Ana comes in and interrupts to say she has to leave as Xavi sings with the family in the living room. As Ana is walking out, she looks at RobPablo who is also looking at her…and they remember how little Juan Pablo yelled out for his mother as he banged on the door of the orphanage.
As she is walking down the hallway, Ana meets Polita who comments that Ana has a perfect life, so Ana tells her to keep her comments to herself. When Polita complains that Tulio is rude and makes Audifaz feel like a failure, Ana tells her that Audifaz should do something with his life. Ana then notices that Polita has a dish with her and mocks that she is finally bringing in some food, but Polita clarifies that she brought it to fill it. Ana smirks and chides, “There you have it, so don’t criticize.”

Imelda wonders if Audifaz is coming but Polita tells her he is studying with Aris since Aris entered the academic competition. When Linda mocks what Aris is doing because he is “super dumb,” RobPablo tells her she shouldn’t be talking about her cousin that way. Linda then turns to RobPablo and tells him he doesn’t know them well and thinks if RobPablo had been raised there, he wouldn’t be the successful doctor he is now. He was lucky to have been raised by another family. Eugenio gets upset and orders Linda to her room. Blanca gets up to go after Linda, but Eugenio orders her to stay; Linda can calm down on her own. After Blanca sits down, she looks at Julieta who also looks at her and shakes her head.

Linda sends a text to Bruno who is in his room. Hugo comes in and sees the sock so Bruno explains why it is there. Hugo tells him there is much to do there at the house instead of playing games. Hugo tells Bruno that Diana is the one who maintains the house; and it’s not fair that he’s not contributing anything. After Bruno cries out for his mother to complain that Hugo is bothering him, Hugo tells him to look for a job and leaves.

RobPablo and Julieta are in bed as Julieta reflects that life has changed into what they didn’t want. When RobPablo wonders why she thinks that, she replies it’s because of his family, Audifaz/Polita, her family…and because of herself. She doesn’t feel she has the authority to speak or give her opinion. Their new family is strange; and they have a little bit of each of his family in them. She really wants his mother to learn to drive so she can go wherever she wants. Julieta then notices RobPablo’s worried look and asks what’s wrong; so he confides that he cannot get David out of his head. He will be taken to the orphanage tomorrow and it’s breaking his heart. Julieta assures him David will find a family just like RobPablo did. After RobPablo thanks her for trying so hard to get along with his family, she reminds him she loves him and will do whatever for him…no matter how difficult. They end their day with a kiss and cuddling.

Thanks, RgvChick, for the excellent recap. You really did justice to that driving lesson. Very entertaining.

Another good episode.

For me, the focus was on Blanca. Will there be a liberation from her current traditionally limited role? I was happy that Julieta witnessed Imelda's reaction to Blanca's driving as well as Eugenio constraining Blanca' s behavior in reference to going after Linda. They both treated Blanca like a child herself.

Of course, I loved Julieta's defense of Blanca from the jerky driver and also from Imelda.

Linda was as bitchy as ever this time in reference to Aristóteles. Clearly, she has not learned her lesson. Send her to her room at her age? Maybe have a heart to heart: if she wants to live there, she is going to have to act differently.

So, Audifaz wanted to be a writer.

Ana's comment to Polita about the food container was an eye-opener. Talk about twisting the knife . . .

"Imelda mounts her antiquated high horse" had me smiling with great glee. Fantastic RgvChick. What fun reliving every moment of last night through your observant, wry perspective.

“RobPablo hugs David and, as he imagines himself as a child at a table with his arms extended, tenderly tells David everything will be alright”. My eyes filled up. That was such a touching scene, beautifully rendered here.

"She confides to Luz that what’s strange to her is that she feels like she is starting to love Blanca". I like how things are developing naturally, on their own, nothing forced. Julieta reaching out, Blanca accepting.

"RobPablo compares it to life…they have to start again and reinvent themselves" so true. His loving persona is so evident by the kind, caring way he relates to and reacts with his family. If it is overwhelming (and I've no doubt it is), he hides those feelings and is open and engaging.

"Eugenio shares that he doesn’t have that much time to enjoy RobPablo’s presence; it’s hard to accept that he will not recover the 34 lost years". How can Ana’s heart not hurt?

“They put the bread rolls in the oven”. I think baking bread is so sexy! I am drifting back to the fabulous bakery boys (Eduardo, Jorge and Pablo in FELS). Huge sigh (and smile!)

"the man mocks the fact that it is a woman teaching a woman!" I was shocked he wasn’t wearing a loin cloth and brandishing a club. Neanderthaal…grumble, grumble. She was hell on wheels though, wasn't she?? :)

Amalia. “She understands that he doesn’t like her and that he thinks that everything she does is to get his attention”. Well, I don’t believe the former is true – I think he gets a bit exasperated with her but hasn’t indicated (at least to me) he doesn’t like her. The latter is true. She is an attention hound (could have used another word but decided against it)!

The crib was beautiful wasn't it? Even Linda seemed momentarily pleased.

"Ana's comment to Polita about the food container was an eye-opener. Talk about twisting the knife". Well said Jarifa!

Anything with Bruno FF....

If Audi can communicate in writing as animated and joyously as he does physically and verbally, I have very high hopes!

RgvChick, lovely. Thank you!

Diana

Thanks RgvChick!

Robert acting like a little kid and pulling a prank on his dad. I love it. Watching him make bread was like watching him become a child again. Look at that. Maybe they can make up for lost time after all.

I'm very much interested in Blanca's story which is funny because I usually dislike identity crisis. But I think Julieta is right. She deserves to start living her dreams: the ones she has given up on. I think Blanca has been forced to live with old traditions, into a frame of how a woman is "supposed to act." Has she ever really been herself? How much has she held back? Will she ever find herself?

I loved the driving scenes. Not only was it hilarious to see Blanca all riled up but they touched on important issues like the way men make fun of woman at the wheel. I appreciate that they're trying to teach we should encourage woman to do anything. I disagree with Imelda. Blanca deserves so much more. I'm glad Julieta sees that.

Damn Ana....talk about being harsh to Polita. (Robert is starting to connect dots?!?! ) Also what is wrong with Linda?( I absolutely with the bitchy comment, Jarifa) Although she asked questions we have asked before. Would Robert have grown up to be the same successful doctor?

David! No I don't want him to leave. Robert should adopt him. Well I guess they are focused on their own baby at the moment. But he already has a cute relationship with him. And he sees his younger self when he hugs him. That's got to mean something! Maybe he'll just visit him a lot for now.

I agree Diana. I have high hopes for Audifaz too. Like Julieta said to Blanca. It's never to late to start living your dreams. I hope it becomes true for him.

-Jackie

Jackie, yes, I've been commenting (and hoping) that Robert and Julieta would adopt David.

Agree David's been "seeing" himself in David but I honestly don't think the thought of adopting has occurred to him. I think it will although a bit frustrating that it hasn't already occurred. Julieta will definitely be on board.

That said, I really liked the way Audi, Polita and Ari bonded with David. If dear Audi could get (and stay) gainfully employed (I don't have high hopes for his present "employer"), I could also see David with them. Ari would be a wonderful older brother and there is a lot of love in that house.

Diana

Robert's been "seeing" himself in David...

Diana

How's our PREGGERS Protagonista doing ?

Great recap, Rgv Chick! I too loved the confrontation with the male driver. And of course he's too much of a macho to accuse Blanca of assault. The holding up of the line of cars was funny too. Of course that's why professional driving schools and high school drivers training programs have Student Driver on the back window. Yep, Imelda is right about Audifaz. He could still be a writer. I thought that was a lovely warm gathering with Xavi, the Córsega family and the crib.

I especially liked your "I'm surprised she didn't tell her she had to be barefoot."

Thank RGV!!!

So we are seeing Imelda's negative influence on her family more and more. It looks like she didn't support Audi's dreams as a child, she doesn't want Blanca driving because women shouldn't drive, and she wants everyone, especially women, to stay in their place. Blanca looked really beaten down this episode. I think Juli's influence on Blanca may start to cause a rift with Imelda.

I can't believe what Linda said about Ari in front of everyone. She deserves to be smacked. She hasn't learned one lesson and is a brat.

Carvivlie: Let me guess: Linda is a mini-Sophia ?

Carvivlie, Blanca did look beaten down. Sometimes, when she gives that wide eyed impactada stare, I want to hug her. Other times, not so much! :)

I also agree that Juli is sparking some independent thoughts and actions not exactly in keeping with Imelda's rather subservient view of a woman's "place..."

Diana

A big thank you to everyone for dropping by. Your kind critiques are most appreciated. And as always, your thoughts and comments are insightful. I agree with what everyone has so eloquently denoted...I'm rushed so this willbe quick...

Julieta defending Blanca was like a mother defending her child.
Imelda has pretty much lost as many points as Amalia, IMO.
Linda and Bruno are stubborn brats who haven't learned anything from their experiences.
Dani was so warm and genuine in presenting the crib to Julieta and Robert.
Love that Mari and Xavi are supporting each other...I wonder when they will realize they could be a great couple.

Steve, are you talking about Sophia from Ramon? I like that Sophia
