46: Points of No Return

just the facts, with only the most important conversations.
Santiago
called his children to tell them that Carolina had a bad night but
will be in the hospital for a night. She had lost one of a pair of
twins and wanted to see the doctor about the remaining one. Santiago
agreed to look for the doctor and then asked her what she meant when
she was talking in her sleep. She told him she had gone to work
rather than to see Elisa. Shew had lied because she knew he wouldn't
approve. There was no argument about this; he went to look for the
doctor as Carolina breathed a sigh of relief in his wake.
Damián
and Raquel arrived. Santiago told them he was looking for the doctor
and would get them some coffee afterward. Raquel said she would
accompany him but Damián said he would wait in the lobby. When
Santiago and Raquel left Damián did not wait. He found Carolina's
room and went in.
“What
are you doing here? Are you crazy?” she asked him.
“Be
calm. We just got here and saw Santiago outside. Carolina, I've
waited –”
“Don't
come near me,” she said.
“Why?”
“Don't
you get it? This happened because it's our punishment.”
“Don't
say that.”
“You
know that.”
“No.
You're mistaken.”
“I
have to remain calm, Damián. To take care of my other baby.”
“There
is another baby? It's mine, too.”
“I'm
asking you to please leave. If you really love me, you will leave.
Please.”
Damián
reluctantly left the room, looking once over his shoulder as he was
out the door. Carolina looked away from him, then turned over on her
side so that her back was to the door and no one passing by could see
her pain.
Raquel
and Santiago returned with coffee and Damián said he needed to go
home to talk to Mia as he had promised her. Raquel kissed him and
let him go. She told Santiago she needed to stay to talk to Carolina
for a few minutes.
Santiago
and Raquel sat down to coffee and to talk about their children. Lola
returned at that moment with Benjamin. Raquel got up and kissed them
both, then left. Santiago told Lola that he intended to continue his
relationship with Raquel, whether she liked it or not. She looked
displeased.
Fernando
and SWAT team members were en route to the Becker house where Rafael
was forcing Cinthia to search for money and other valuables. She was
frightened and did not comply easily. He began shouting at her and
holding her at gunpoint. She had a few things in a cloth bag and he
grabbed her by the hair and pushed her ahead of him. He then handed
her a cell phone and ordered her to call her sister. She flinched
and he placed the muzzle of the pistol at her head and shouted at her
to “Call your sister!”
Outside
Jovita was on her way home from grocery shopping when she saw the
police car pull up. She was sufficiently shocked to stop as Fernando
came out of the car and asked whether there was another entrance.
She told him there was a back door and he quickly explained that
Cinthia was possibly in danger. He had her unlock the gate and
remain outside away from the doorway as he went inside with two armed
men.
Cinthia
was becoming hysterical and Rafael was getting impatient. He grabbed
her by the back of the neck and pushed her forward toward a double
door.
Mia
had just finished telling Miriam her twisted version of recent
events.
“Therefore
I was right. Raquel was with Santiago.”
“Yes,
Grandmother. They were together. I saw them.”
“Ay,
I'm sorry, but your mother has no morals.”
“No.
And you have no idea how I feel when I see them together,
Grandmother. It breaks my heart. And the worst of it is I can't do
anything about it because I can't talk to my brother and –”
“With
me, with me. You can tell me everything, my love, please. I knew
it. I knew they were together from the beginning. But fortunately
your father has us to defend him.”
“Grandmother,
I don't know what to do.”
“The
first thing we will you is you will come to live with me. I don't
want you to spend one second more with your mother.”
She
cupped Mia's head in her hands as the girl faced her. She looked
both confused and frightened.
Cinthia
was extremely frightened as Fernando spotted her and Rafael, who
turned her around to use her as a shield. Shots rang out from
several directions with Rafael returning fire. Finally he turned
around to face Fernando while aiming the gun toward Cinthia. He had
his left arm over her left shoulder and across her body as he tried
to move backward. He shot to his right and that was his last bullet.
The other SWAT team members closed in on him and grabbed him from
behind. Cinthia went to Jovita, who was standing by the police car.
She started sobbing. Fernando cuffed Rafael behind his back and
shoved him into the police car as Rafael shouted at him. Raquel
arrived before the police left and Cinthia ran into her arms.
Fernando tried to tell her that all was well.
At
the police station Alina tried to se Bebo, telling Antonio that the
boy had the right to see his lawyer. Antonio agreed, but said that
it was not possible at the moment. Bebo had gotten into a fight and
was badly hurt.
Inside
the Becker house Fernando pointed to the bag of jewelry on the coffee
table, saying that Rafael had that when he was apprehended. Raquel
said that the contents was hers. Cinthia asked what would happen to
her, claiming guilt. Fernando explained that it would depend on
whether Raquel was going to press charges against her. Either way
the jewelry would be entered as evidence and would be returned to
Raquel shortly. Raquel exchanged a meaningful look with Jovita and
told Fernando that she would not be pressing charges against her
sister. He replied that Rafael would do some time and that Cinthia
had the opportunity to start over for a new life without problems.
He most likely didn't see the hard look Raquel gave her.
While
all this was going on Lola vented at Santiago about how could he
possibly have a relationship with the wife of the man his wife had
cheated on him with.
Damián
came home to find Mia in one of her usual bad moods. He told her he
wanted them to see the psychologist.
“So
Mother told you everything,” she said, sarcastically.
“Only
what happened in the consultation. She suggested I talk alone with
you. Didn't you tell me to spend more time with you?”
“You
don't want to.” She looked down at the floor.
“Of
course not, my love. Don't say that. I want us to talk.” She
still was not looking up. “Look at me. I want things to be as
they were.”
“That
won't happen.”
“Why?
Because you think you don't matter to me? Because you think my
family doesn't matter? You're mistaken. Now more than ever it
does.” He took her hand. “The only thing I want is to see you
happy, my love.”
“Then,
let's go on a trip together. Just the four of us.”
Raquel
told Carolina not to feel guilty about losing the baby. She had lost
one herself after her twins and felt very bad about it but it wasn't
her fault. She told her to focus on the one she would have.
Carolina started crying.
“I'm
not a good person, I'm not a good mother,” she cried.
“How
can you say that? You have two marvelous children; they're
treasures! They are a reflection of their mother. They are
beautiful. You are a great mother, Caro.”
Carolina
continued to cry, saying that her life will never be the same as
before. She will be taking care of the new baby and won't be
working. She apologised again, saying that when she got out of the
hospital she would have to leave all that. The two women embraced.
Raquel
was at the police station explaining to Antonio that she was not
pressing charges against her sister. Antonio told Alina that this
wouldn't get Bebo off the hook for attempting to sell stolen
property. Alina pointed out that if there is no charge, the property
is not stolen. She asked Raquel if there was any chance she would
change her mind and Raquel said she would not. Especially since she
didn't want to see an innocent person prosecuted over things he
himself didn't steal. Alina then pointed out that there was
therefore no crime committed and she insisted that they free her
client. Antonio conceded that he would have this further
investigated. Alina then insisted that there also be an
investigation into the lapse in security that allowed the fight to
take place.
Fernando
filled Santiago in on what had happened at the Becker house and
assured him that nothing fatal happened and that Rafael would do
several years for this. Raquel came out of Antonio's office, they
embraced, and she started venting about Cinthia, still not believing
that she could do such things. He asked about Bebo and whether he
would go free and Alina appeared to tell him that he would. She
explained she would have to oversee the process and that Bebo would
be released. Raquel watched her manner carefully, noting when
Santiago took her hand and how Alina kissed him before departing. She
said nothing about this but her reaction did not go unnoticed by him.
This
was in the nightly news report, which also included mention of a
related incientn of police corruption. Laura did not relay any
details of that.
At
the hospital Santiago explained to his children that their mother had
lied to him about being with Aunt Elisa and why. The doctor came out
and said that Carolina was better although sad about the loss. He
thought it best that she go home and resume her normal life. As he
left Raquel returned and told him that Carolina will be coming home
to her old routine.
Later
Damián told Raquel that he had talked to Mia about the psychologist
and that she had calmed down. She was pleasantly surprised.
“Raquel,
I want to do everything to recover our family,” he said.
“You
know I love when you talk like this because I feel like I'm talking
to the Damián I fell in love with. My man, the most handsome... I
love this.”
“Like
that,” he said. He embraced her, but stared at the ceiling.
Raquel
talked about Carolina giving up the business. He did not look
pleased, but said nothing about it. Raquel told him she felt better
because she was feeling guilty about possibly having pushed Carolina
into the business and causing the problem. Damián told her that she
had nothing to feel bad about. Raquel felt better because they would
then have time to recover what they thought they had lost. He
agreed. It was good that she did not see his face, for its
expression was one of resignation rather than relief.
Carolina
came home from the hospital to decorations and flowers from her
children while the Beckers left for Acapulco where they played on the
beach. On the surface, both families looked perfect. Damián tried
calling Carolina but she did not take his calls. A few months later
Carolina took off her robe in front of Santiago and he took her
picture nude, in profile, obviously pregnant.
The
Beckers returned from Acapulco and Damián said he would be checking
up on the office while Santiago showed Carolina some plans he had
drawn up for a construction project of low-cost housing for
working-class people. “If this works out it will change our
lives,” he told her. He left to go to work and her cell began
ringing. It was Damián and she did not answer.
Lola
was out swimming at the beach when Patricia approached her to talk
about Juan, blaming her for his current mental state. Lola stated
several times she didn't want to talk to her, which Patricia took as
a snub. She accused Lola of thinking herself better than everyone
else, pointing out that she (herself) hadn't been as lucky when
parents were being handed out. This didn't end amicably.
Carolina
was cleaning the kitchen and removed a heavy earthenware pitcher from
the top shelf. She moved a chair into place so she could climb up
and dust the shelf. She was wearing wedged shoes rather than flats
and slipped off and fell to the floor. She was in immediate pain,
but managed to get her cell phone off the table. She tried to make a
call, but Damián called at that moment. He had not expected her to
answer. She told him she had fallen and was afraid of losing her
baby. He immediately left the office.
Santiago
and Nicolás talked about work and about Bebo's progress. Santiago
said he was doing well and that Nacho was proud. As they got to the
car he suggested that they call Carolina and Santiago discovered he
didn't have his cell phone. Nicolás tried calling it in case they
could hear it, but they could not. As they got into the car Santiago
told him to call the house.
Carolina
was being wheeled into the emergency room of a different hospital
from before. A doctor asked Damián if he wanted to be present for
the birth and he said Yes.
Raquel
came home from working at the foundation and told Jovita that things
were going well and she was closer than ever to Damián. She was
still operating the catering business in Carolina's absence. She
realized that the baby was about due.
The
baby was only moments away from birth. Damián was in scrubs,
coaching Carolina to push.
Raquel
called the Alvarado house, where Santiago and Nicolás both realized
that if Carolina wasn't there she had to be at the hospital.
Carolina
pushed hard and sweated. Finally the doctor said “Congratulations.
It's a beautiful boy.”
He
put the baby on Carolina's chest and asked Damián if he would like
to cut the cord. Damián said “Yes.”

The person most likely to whack Laura is Juan and he should not be running around loose as he is. The second most likely is Rafael, who could do it through connexions in the slammer.
I can't wait to see Damian squirm while explaining how he came to be in the delivery room with Carolina.
We haven't seen Alina with a man her own age so it will be interesting to see if she really goes after Santiago or if Raquel is just paranoid because of Damiantha's infidelity. Alina is sufficiently perverse that it's not out of the question for her to want to boink both a young fellow and his handsome father.
Miriam can't be trusted if Mia moves in with her.
I can't wait to see Damian squirm while explaining how he came to be in the delivery room with Carolina.

With each episode Damián continues to prove what a piece of work he is. His lack of concern for Carolina is unbelievable. Showing up in the delivery room, really? Cutting the umbilical cord? How was he planning on explaining his presence if found out being just a “friend of the family”? Next episode should be interesting.
Godoy needs to learn how to drive he almost hit Jovita.

I’m pretty sure that picture that Santiago took of Carolina pregnant is the same one that Raquel found. The fact that Carolina gave it to Damian is frustrating.

In the grand scheme of things the DNA test results will be a small matter, especially if the results are faked. Miriam could want Benjamin to be Damian's for two reasons:
-- to have someone else to manipulate
-- to hurt Santiago

A while back I posted a link to a video about coma survivors. Both had brain deterioration, so if Damian is in a coma for more than a couple of weeks -- especially in view of Miriam's murder attempt -- he can't possibly make a full recovery. Since the writers have kept him in that coma this long it feels to me that they are trying to make up their minds about what to do with this.

Urban, you conveyed every emotion, every action perfectly. Your narrations are always flawless and this was no exception.
Admittedly, Damian and Caro should not have gotten together, stayed together and hurt everyone in their orbit. I also have no idea how he will explain his presence in the delivery room either. But the one thing I felt, I truly believed after watching that scene was that Damian loves Caro, and she loves him. I can't explain it, can't condone it. But I totally believe it. The expression on his face tugged at my heartstrings. I believe he is a consummate liar but think at least in this instance, there was real, raw emotion.
While Caro has made devastating, hurtful mistakes, I believe she was devastated by the loss of the twin. She has paid dearly for all of her sins.
"Lola vented at Santiago about how could he possibly have a relationship with the wife of the man his wife had cheated on him with". Lola, the most insightful of the offspring was spot on. Despite the friendship and/or love Santi and Raq are feeling, nothing can erase or compensate from the origin of others relationships.
Urban, you brought up an interesting point about Alina. I had thought Nico was just a means to his father but perhaps an "adult" relationship is beyond her.

In all our collective years of viewing we have dealt with a tremendous lack of medical realism in these programs. The lack of respect for patient privacy is particularly painful although sometimes in the real world this works against the patient. We don't know whether Damian will wake up from this coma but I can tell you that in the real world he would be unlikely to be mentally intact even without Miriam's murder attempt.
As for Alina, I am having serious issues now about how her perverse preference for guys who are barely legal contrasts with her professional competence. This does not send a good message.

Thanks Urban for a great recap once again.
I speak no Spanish so I cannot begin to appreciate the ambiguity of "te engane" - the phrase Carolina mumbled to Santiago in her drugged state. But she managed to explain it to Santiago to mean something like "I tricked you", or "I lied to you" adding the qualifier "about where I was" - not with my sister in law but at the catering shop. (Quite different from her guilt ridden utterance initially to Santiago - I cheated on you. She was blaming herself for having sex with Damian when the miscarriage happened.)
Both Carolina and Damian became smooth liars with the start of their affair. (Well, it's possible that Damian has never been quite truthful to Raquel at any point given his sex drive.) And both Raquel and Santiago have accepted their lies because of the emotional/physical attachment Raquel and Santiago have for their respective spouses. (The children do not seem quite so gullible.)
Not looking forward to scenes of Mia and Miriam - a real witches brew.

Benjamin is also a constant reminder of the affair between Carolina & Damian (should the DNA tests say Damian is the father).
So if the logic is that Santiago & Raquel should not be together because their relationship is a constant reminder that Damian & Carolina cheated, then Benjamin should be given up for adoption right away because he also is a reminder that Damian & Carolina cheated.
That's not going to happen and Santiago & Raquel should determine the course of their relationship ... without their now adult children's input. The only child's feelings that should determine the course of Santi/Raq's relationship is Benjamin.
