Por Amar Sin Ley, 3/15/18 Chapter 9: Dreaded Ends and Making New Friends

Carlos explains his strategy of exculpation, aka, acquittal, to his dimmer witted cousin, Alan: if Carolos gets Leonardo, who everyone knows won't defend anyone he deems to be lying, and who comes from his major legal competition, as his criminal defense attorney [penalista] then his personal and professional reputation suddenly becomes golden again--and Leo should win that cases.

Victoria gives her official statement to the equivalent of the Prosecuting Attorney's Office.  She  assures her that many times she told her dead friend, Rocio, to tell the police about her husband's physical and mental abuse.  That's why she filed an anonymous complaint against Dario (Mario?).  She warned to be careful and that he'd end up killing her some day and now.....well Vicki's determined it was that brute--who has suddenly, conveniently gone missing--and she's going to put him behind bars if it's the last thing she ever does!

Roberto lends his emotional support during and after Vicki gives her statement. He lends her his shoulder when she blames herself for not having insisted Rocio leave the murderous bastard.  For once she doesn't reject him with a sparring quip.

Leo shows up that evening at Ricardo's bachelor pad and asks to spend the night there since he just broke it off with Ana Maria and won't return till he's certain she's moved out with all her personal things.  Besides, he wants nothing to do with women in general, let alone in particular.  He cries in his beer which Ric has so generously proffered.  (Word up, Olivia!)  Leo is disappointed in himself, in women, and in his former BFF de Roberto who Ric defends: "--the dude simply couldn't let you marry that kind of a woman!  It demonstrated his friendship." What really burns Leo's buttinsky is that of all the men in all the gin joints on this planet, she had to get involved with that one!  (Gawd, haven't some of us in Viewerville been down that road before!)

At the same time, Roberto keeps Vicki company at her apartment and manages to mind his manners as well.  He offers to make her something to eat but all she wants is to lay down and take a nap.  She cries herself asleep on the bed.  He comes in and it seems to be the right thing to do between them, so he takes off his jacket and removes his shoes.  He gently spoons with her on the bed and again she notes it but does not resist.  They both fall off to sleep the sleep of the emotionally exhausted till morning.  (And, for me, this is the winning couple of this tn--not Ric and Ale--as there is a true on-screen chemistry through which the two actors and the director have managed to impart to us the underlying, supercharged love affair between two denying souls who are trying desperately to avoid an unimaginable amount of hurt should they ever seriously open their heart to one another and be forever truly denied and/or rejected by the other.)

The next morning Ric agrees that Leo's done the right thing in kicking AM to the curb.  Wait for the"... woman who truly respects you.  You deserve it."  (Yup and don't we all.)  Again, the idea is that you must throw yourself into your work to remain distracted from your personal disappointments and hurts.  Leo says he wants another junior criminal defense attorney to help him with all the exess business they've got since right now it's only him and Mr. U-NO-WHOOO de Roberto.   Right now Alonso is only interested in getting a senior family law attorney hired/appointed, reminds Ric.  Leo heads off and rejects Ric's suggestion to listen to Rob's side of the story.

Back at Vicki's gorgeous digs (I want THAT set designer to do a number on my home!)  morning comes and Vicki's surprised by Rob with a breakfast tray.  He tells her he knew this day would come: they slept together.  She chuckles at the joke.  He feeds her a bite or two of a beautiful fruit plate he put together for her.  It surprises her, she says, that he could/would do something like this.  He looks over at her sincerely and says believe it or not he does worry about her.  She looks like she appreciates his comment and might actually consider he's being truthful for once in his life.  He gets up from the bed and says somewhat awkwardly that ok, they've now spent their "night together" and he's got work to catch up on.  In particular Menendez and now her friend's killer whom she sweetly asks he make sure to capture and throw the book at.  He promises and she thanks him for his kindnesses.  He kisses her gently on the forehead and takes his leave.  She is left to ponder Rob's restrained adult behavior.....

Back at the Vega law firm, Oli arrives and the first thing out of her mouth to Carmen is what have you heard from Leo.  He left in such a rush and the fighting--what about?  Carmen eventually tells her about the blow up over Rob and AM having slept together recently and Leo's upset.  Oli naively sees her opening to pounce prematurely....

At the jail, Alejandra gripes to Carlos about the uncomfortable position he put her in trying to assist with the interrogation of witnesses for his case.  She felt dirty and embarrassed at having to hear what that waiter said about how nice he was towards the hooker and how affectionately he behaved when even making sure to put a rose on her breakfast tray--same way he always did it for Ale!!!  He makes excuses that he's like that to all women...blah, blah, blah.  Well, she's off his case as of now and in any event will be soon be joining his competition. She adds she does approve of his legal strategy.

Oli defended and won an age discrimination case for a guy who was pushed out just months before his retirement so he would be losing his pension which he needs and counted on to live off of.  She greets Vicki in Black and commiserates on the tragic death of her friend. No, Vicki shouldn't have come to work.  Vicki says the firm's too busy.  Hopefully they'll hire Ale as the next lawyer there since she's really a good one.

Ric's new case deals with an elderly old woman with dementia whose nurse is taking advantage of her financially.

Benjamin tries to assure Leticia that the new senior attorney's position is hers.  She threatens leaving if she doesn't get it.  He says, leaving him?  They begin to turn on the steamy and are caught in the midst of hot and heavy panting and petting when Carmen walks in on them.  It would seem that Carmen is not surprised and that they all know what they all know to be the relationship here.  Alonso wants to see Letti in his office.

Rob and Leo get onto the elevator together and nearly come to blows over Rob's trying to explain the situation.  Leo wants no part of Rob or his loose attitude towards casual sex.....

Oli suggests to Vicki that Leo's new found freedom is her opening and she's going to strike while they iron's hot.  Vicki tells her how uncouth and frankly stooooooooooopid and naive and selfish that idea is.  "--The last thing the poor man wants now is another woman breathing down his neck.  Get hold of yourself.  Get real!  Life is not one big legal case and strategy!"

Alan arrives unexpectedly to see Leo and explains that Carlos wants Leo to defend him.  He explains how the situation looks dire, how the P.A. is out for blood, and that Carlos has nothing to hide, so he wants his best competition to defend him.  Leo says he will first want to interview Carlos and look him in the eye.  If all works out as it should, he'll want all files about the case and (I believe) the firm at his disposal.  He takes charge and Al will be on the sidelines---or should be.  If at any time he learns that he's been lied to he leaves the case, period.

Alonso informs Letti that he believes she makes a good team working with Oli and will keep her in that position.  (Carlos, call your office.)  She's steamed up, but not the way Benji expected.  He says he'll get her that senior position, just trust him and give him a bit of time.

Ric informs Ale that she's got the senior position and she accepts the offer formally from Alonso a bit later.  Lonnie and Ale come to Ric's office and he informs him of her official acceptance and that Ale and Ric will be sharing the same office till her new office is renovated.  Ric is secretly delighted.

Rob informs Benji that he'll be needed to give his statement about Menendez to the judge.  Ben is at his command. AND, BTW Rob ol' buddy, ol pal, Letti may leave the firm if Alonso gives the senior's job to another attorney.  Rob says, well then, they have to respect that decision.  It's Lonnnie's choice to make.  Duh.  Benji says it will be bad news for the firm if she goes, right?  Rob says yeah, but even worse for you, right?  Benji looks like he's just been swatted with his mama's flyswatter--and he has.  "--Not to worry, when there's another opportunity, I'm certain it'll be hers."

Ric invites Ale to eat and perhaps "celebrate" her joining the firm.  She turns him down.  He's intrigued again at her rejection and even more determined to persue her.

Ale gets home to learn that Lourdes's fiance died without having had the chance for her to say good-bye.  FF>>FF>>

Nuria is pleasantly surprised to learn that Daniel/a gave up the joint custody in favor of not bothering the kid till he's an adult and making his own decisions about his other bio-parent's situation.

Elaina brings back Ale's wedding gift from Ric and her so he can return it to the store since the wedding was officially cancelled rather than just postponed.  She and he quibble and the gift is left out on the credenza when she leaves his office.  He has the hint of a smile once she's gone to learn that the way is wide open for him to pursue Ale on his own terms now.

At the jail, Carlos gets a request from one of the powerful gang leaders to get him out of jail.  He promises protection inside for Carlos if he can pull it off.  Carlos eventually gives in.

Al, meanwhile, meets with a banker and says Carlos has asked to have certain funds of the law firm transferred to his personal account.  The banker acknowledges that their law firm is one of their best customers.  Well, the banker didn't know Carlos was in jail or why and how desperate things are becoming.  Al says who better to look after his cousin's inheritance than himself.  So, the banker isn't certain, we note, that this is truly kosher.  He doesn't think it will fly with his bank's legal team.  Al insults him for not being an attorney, let alone an experienced litigator such as the self-important and puffed up Al is, and for saying such idiotic things.  He writes the sum [monto=sum, amount. quantity] of cash he'll be receiving.  Any argument stops at the paper's edge.

Sweet moments between Roberto & Victoria.

Leticia, you spend your time getting your groove on in the office, gossiping, whining, etc. Now Carmen nows how you get down. We've seen the following people interacting with clients/prospective clients:

Vega Y Associados

Roberto
Ricardo
Leonardo
Victoria
Gustavo
Olivia
Benjamin

Other firms:

Carlos
Alan
Alejandra

We have NOT seen Leticia interacting with any clients/prospective clients (which tie into Alonso saying Leticia is not good with interacting with clients).

Leticia is whining and threatening to leave, but if Vega & Associates is as great as they say, they will have NO PROBLEM replacing her if she is truly about that life. But she's not, she's lazy and entitled. Just like her BFF Elena. And did she say she hating working with Oli?

Elena will shut Ricardo down the moment she finds out Alejandra is sharing an office with him. What a silly woman, to be jealous of her kids.

Oli is so thirsty. I'm glad Victoria shut her down and told her Leo is in no mood to start dating any woman, much less her.

I think probably up to this point, Carlos is probably not that shady in business, just with his personal life. But now that his very life is in danger, Carlos will start walking on the dark side.

SMH at Alan getting the banker/lawyer/whoever to transfer the firm's funds into his personal account.

Alan is a parasite,moocher,backstabber
Whatever is involved in bottom feeding
He's in There. I've said this before &
I'll say it again, it would not be a
Big shocker if he set up cousin Carlos
So he could remove him out of the way
He is his cousin right? The man is a lo- Life. I'm not trusting Carlos either, cuz he got a dark side.We still
Don't know why he's hating on Ricardo.
And for how he spits out ricky's name
When he talks about him, he raelly hates him. Maybe they'll let us in on the Mystery of the hatred, soon I hope.

I like Vicky and Roberto together. The
Fact that he held her all night with-
out lookin for anything put him much higher up on the scale of respect in my book. Until he does something to
Make me look down on him again. Cuz he
Is very into sex with no real feeling
For the person he's with. It's empty just sex. And from what I saw last night he is capable of so much more than that. He And Vicky could be a force to reckened With.

Leticia can leave and start up her own
Lawfirm of selfish intitled lawyers like Herself. Alan would fit in good
With her.Elena could be office assist.
Or the office gossip. Whatever fits well in her resume.

Thanks for the discussion page Jardinera654.

Leticia threatening to leave.

Is Alonso too kind or not sharp enough to sit her down and tell her:

"You know, now that you mention it, that is an excellent idea, and I am going to free you from making that hard decision yourself. I am making it for you.

We no longer need your services. You are now free to find a place where you will be much happier and where your work is better appreciated. Carmen has your package and all the details, see her after you empty your desk. Thank You and Good Luck."

Leticia isn't going anywhere because she's lazy. And she's not that bright because otherwise she'd be sexing up Alonso, Roberto or Ricardo. If she's really ambitious, Victoria.

Nevertheless, the beginning of the end of Leticia & Benjamin's "relationship" has started. Leticia knows Benjamin can't do anything for her. She'll stay with him, hoping to win him from his wife. But she will be the loser in the end.

Speaking of Alonso, he knew he'd be hiring a senior lawyer whether it was Alejandra or Leticia so why didn't he get maintenance to clear out that space office before they started?

Leticia didn't threaten Alonso with leaving. She whined to Benjamin about leaving. If she was really about that life, she would've told Alonso she was thinking about leaving. But she's not really going to leave, which is why she kept quiet.

Anon207, thanks for the rundown of what happened last night.

Leticia, are you still watching? It's weird when a character with your own name is so wrong isn't it? :D

Alejandra who's going through hell dealing with Carlos's problems but not becoming a drama queen, like Elena, must be a breath of fresh air to Ricardo. Someone commented earlier that if not for his love of the kids, Ricardo would've never fixated on or stayed with Elena. I'm sure she put up a mask in the early days of being a strong, caring single mother.

It's strange for me to feel sorry for the villain, but I guess at this point Carlos is more villain-in-waiting. Looks like in addition to losing his lady love, he'll lose his practice with Alan absconding with company funds and get caught up into prison abuse. All because he slept with a prostitute cause he was drunk, stupid, and arrogant. I've wondered if somebody spiked his booze.

Even without Alejandra's superior skills (Alonso said earlier she's expert in international law, which would bring in more business), Leticia is a washout. She dissed Oli who has been nice and supportive of her and the affair with Benjamin is just a means to an end for her. The "friendship" with Elena isn't real either. Those two vipers are just using each other for information.

It wouldn’t be surprising if Leonardo rudely shuts down Olivia for making an insensitive comment to him regarding the cancelled wedding. She’s made that point twice already, first to the secretary, then Victoria. It’s like she’s waiting for someone to give her the ‘GO’ signal to make her move. She was insensitive to Victoria too, because she just experienced a traumatic event and Olivia changes the conversation to talk about her obsession.

With or without that senior lawyer position, I don’t think it’s smart to leave Vega & Associates. It’s an empty threat. Maybe Leticia did try to get with the partners, but none of them took the bait so she settled with Benjamin. Also, maybe there’s a real reason why Leticia hates working with Olivia. It’s the second time she’s made that comment. If Olivia is annoying with her obsession now, maybe she’s just as annoying when it comes to other things too. Regardless, Leticia is obviously a nasty person.

Alan could have hired someone to murder the prostitute. Now that Carlos has a real chance to get out, Alan starts to make rushed financial movements. Maybe he wasn’t expecting him to ever be cleared.

Ricardo’s officially free, and the return of the wedding gift shows that Alejandra’s free too. He must really be getting his hopes up.

This is finally getting somewhat good, after a somewhat cumbersome, lumbering first few episodios. I, though, hope this can be less family law and more penal/criminal law. I enjoy that moreso than family matters. Different strokes. Benji's background should be looked into and explored more, as should Alan's. I could care less about Ale's madre and her silly friends who are less than sympathetic and certainly provide me NO comic relief if that is their place in the tn's scheme of things. Just sayin'........

Thanks
I wouldn't like to work together with Oli too tbh. She might be nice but I don't think I could stand listening to her for more than a minute coz all she seems to talk about is her obsession with Leo.

Leticia also said something about her always doing things the way she wants? I didn't get that.

My favorite scenes were Vicky and Roberto together. They just make such a perfect fit.

Ditto Jardinera the middle aged or older women boohooing over a man. Didn't you girls give that up along with the change?

Lourdes' boyfriend's kids blocked her from seeing him in the hospital and he died. Now they are telling her she is not welcome at the funeral. Because Lourdes didn't say her boyfriend's wife blocked her, I'm guessing that either:

Lourdes was a girlfriend the kids never approved of after their mom's death/divorce

Lourdes was their father's side chick that he never married after their mother died/divorced him

It actually ties in to the show and Vega & Associates' focus on family law. Lourdes may have been the man's girlfriend for 5, 10, 20 years but because she was not legally married to him, she had no rights. The kids had the right to block her from the hospital and from the funeral and there's nothing Lourdes can do about it. This is what Alejandra told her when Lourdes boo hooed to her. I actually wonder if they might not end up being a future storyline...perhaps the boyfriend left Lourdes some property/money but the kids take her to court to prevent her from inheriting anything.

At any rate, after a certain age, you either need to marry your boyfriend/girlfriend or get a living will, because being with your boyfriend for 10, 20 years means nothing when he gets sick and his kids/parents decide to block you. This is one of the main reasons gay people pushed for legal marriage, because if you were a gay couple and your partner got sick, their parents/siblings/children could block you from seeing them in the hospital, making medical decisions for them or even making funeral arrangements for them.

Anon207, did you ever see an HBO film called If These Walls Could Talk 2? That brings home your point about gay marriage and survivor rights.

If anyone wants to view this, FF through the opening credits if you can. The video is not high-quality but the first story with Vanessa Redgrave is heartbreaking.

Thanks Jardinera. Loved this line among others:

What really burns Leo's buttinsky is that of all the men in all the gin joints on this planet, she had to get involved with that one! (Gawd, haven't some of us in Viewerville been down that road before!)

Also got a kick out of the pp alliteration "pounce prematurely" concerning Olia Yes, she has immediately become a super tedious obsessive. I don't mind the feral Leticia complaining about her, even if it's for the wrong reasons.

And totally with you about the beguiling chemistry between skeptical but sensitive Victoria and bad boy with a heart of gold Roberto. They even have a love theme playing now with "te cuidaré en la noche" etc. etc. which fit perfectly with the gentle, supportive spooning and breakfast making. The promiscuous worm is slowly turning. Will be fun to watch.

Elena is still in there pitching I see. Her pathetic little "this wedding gift card is the last time our names as a married couple appears" ploy did not work. Ricardo was distinctly unmoved, and distinctly relieved when she finally dragged herself out. On to Alejandra!

I agree that the Lourdes wah wah number was boring, and the actress has certainly had more interesting roles, but her situation does tie in to family law and undoubtedly at some point Alejandra will have to go to work on her case against the vengeful kids.

Muchas gracias Jardinera. Tentacion was too rough for this wuss to watch but I'm liking this one.

Thank you Jardinera for your witty recap.
If Lourdes lived with her boyfriend for many years and it was common knowledge that she was his longtime partner, she could have a status of a common law wife and, as such, have some rights. I don't know what Mexican law's stance is regarding common law spouses, but in certain countries, common law spouses can claim social security benefits after their partner's demise and sometimes even inherit their partner just like a wife/husband would.

As far as Ricardo's rights to see his children are concerned, I am almost certain that a judge would grant him visitation rights at the very least and I do not understand why he does not petition for visitation rights. He has been in the children's life for 10 years and family court weighs heavily the interest of a child when granting visitation/custody. Often, courts grant visitation rights to grandparents, aunts/uncles and even to previous partners of the parent, as long as such visitation is in the best interest of the child. By the way, in the U.S, 23 states have laws authorizing stepparent visitation.
Irene

Urban Anthropologist, I have never seen that film. It sounds interesting to check out. Lourdes' plight is a cautionary tale.

Elena is so pathetic her scene in the opening credits is her pouting on the couch. She must be getting good alimony from Ricardo or was independently wealthy for her to be able to sit around all day doing nothing. She can go to work, the children are at least 10 and 12 years old.

So far I find Olivia terribly annoying and needy, and I am not on board with her future obvious romance with Leo. Victoria and Roberto, on the other hand, definitely have great chemistry and I am rooting for them to get together.
As far as Alejandra and Carlos are concerned, I do not understand why an intelligent woman would allow such emotional blackmail from someone for whom she obviously lost all respect and love. She almost cringes when she sees him, so why on earth didn't she put a punto final to this relationship? That she didn't break up with Carlos after finding out about his infidelity the night before their wedding is mind boggling, that she stayed with him after finding out about all the details of his night with the prostitute is outright insane.
Irene

Great work, Jardinera.

My gut tells me that Leo will be suspicious when he meets Carlos. And he should be. Carlos may not have done this crime but he is not a nice guy.

There is likely to be more family than criminal law in this series because Mexico doesn't have jury trials like we do in the criminal division. The one trial I can remember seeing in a novela was in Duelo de Pasiones when Alvaro was tried for one or more of his crimes. He stood in a cell with two prison guards, the judge sat at a desk, the court stenographer took everything down. The prosecutor and the defense attorneys asked their questions and witnesses waited in the next room. No jury and no spectators. It's a situation where Mexican judges are probably somewhat immune to the sort of histrionics we see in US-based programs like this.

Kirby we gave the change up but it Trys to stick around more than if should sometimes. Anx tjise ol biddies need tk stop all that boohooin just cuz the kids won't let her see their daddy. And they look LiKe they're over actin the situation. Thats a really stupid filler. Ezalia
Must have gotten tired all the
Bitchy parts she was playin. But
This is really watered down for her.

Thanks, Jardinera. They both fall off to sleep the sleep of the emotionally exhausted till morning. <<>> Those two are so cute together.

Leo says he wants another junior criminal defense attorney to help him with all the excess business they've got since right now it's only him and Mr. U-NO-WHOOO de Roberto.

Hmmm, is this a hint that poor lawyer Juan will be coming to Vega?

How ironic that Leo can look in the eye of potential clients and tell if they’re telling the truth, but in dating women not so much...

Benji says it will be bad news for the firm if she goes, right? Rob says yeah, but even worse for you, right? Benji looks like he's just been swatted with his mama's flyswatter--and he has. -- funny.

I'm thinking Alejandra has broken off with Carlos, but isn't hammering that fact into him while he's still suffering in the slammer. My take is that since she believes him innocent of murder, she's trying to be supportive of getting him freed, but nothing else. As another commenter said, she does not flash those dimples with him (like with Ricardo), so that ship has sailed.

This is a large cast and they've tried to cram a little bit of all the stories. I too can't believe they hired the two fine actresses playing Ale's mom and her friend to sit on the couch everyday skawking about the boyfriend's kids doing her wrong. I'm guessing there's a legal case in there somewhere and they'll get up off the couch.

Alicia gives me the creeps. I think I read somewhere that the actress had been a child star, hence being known only by a single name. She makes me think of Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?

What character is alicia playing?

I think it's hot old gal crying over a MAAAAN. The brunette who is Alexandra's Mom's friend.

Hmmmmmm. Lol.

Thank you Jardinera, I enjoyed reading your recap. Bullets did not diminish your funny inputs.

Niecie already pointed out the same parts that I chuckled to. And ITA how wonderous that Leo couldnt tell his gal lied and cheated on him.

My BFF and I would often give each other really good man advice, but failed and lost perspective for our lovelife. We would tell one another, ‘when you speak, it sounds like law if the land, but not so much when It comes to my own problems.’’ :(

Yes, Niecie I already griped outloud about why they had to use Leticia name for that hussy! Why couldn’t Alejandra be Leticia instead????

Oh well.....really am enjoying this. Caer exhausted me with trying to figure out if a scene was current or past. My mom would get really confused about that. I would explain to her that was (pasado) no no sorry it is now. So yes, I would get myself confused then unconfused. Probably just me, I grew weary of watching Caro keep breaking up w damien. I had invested so much time watching that I couldnt stop.

Regarding Olie, suppose its written that every novela has to have a needy character. i dont know if Azelia and her buds are suppose to provide comic relief even if they not funny. I enjoyed watching her in Vino with her witty, bitchy self. Soneone said her role is watered down and I so agreee with that statement.

By the way who is Alicia ?

Good weekend everyone.

Alicia is the pudgy blonde who wrings her hands while Lourdes weeps about not being able to say good-bye to her great departed amor.

Thanks JudyB.

I will google her, now I am intrigued that she was child star.
