Por Amar Sin Ley, 4/5/18 Chapter 23: This Fox Is A Wolf Who Brings Coffee

Ricardo falls on his sword for Alejandra.  He will stand aside while she determines the next step in her relationship/ex-relationship with Carlos.

The judge in Gustavo's case asks for character? witnesses.  Milena smiles evilly, if not triumphantly, over at Gus.  He frowns.

Juanito brings another morning's coffee to the M.E.'s office and flusters the dude in charge.  They'll just wait together again today--"just in case"-- for the necessary report: "--I cannot go back to my bosses empty handed, now can I!"

Leonardo visits Carlos at the jail and advises him the date's been set and he'll need character witnesses.  No, the M. E./M.P.'s report isn't available yet but Leo's got all the tools he needs to present the case.  Carlos just must make certain all his friends and family are there to testify and support him as a decent man and fabulous lawyer with a spotless reputation.  He's only got Alan for family --forget that naive dolt.  "--He just lost a case he took without consulting me."  He is less than prime, Carlos confides.  Leo says leave him to me.

At the office, Victoria is on her way out.  She and Roberto flirt a bit about her not having seen him in her office bugging her to go out.  He mentions the case with Carlos has been keeping him busy.  He takes this as an opening to pursue her again and enters the elevator with her begging her for an opportunity.

There is some legal process that Ric is forced to wait in line over; when Ale comes she asks a friend in Archives to help her get a specific file out that Ric needs.  (All I could catch is that she used to work in the Archives/Judicial Records Division.  She mumbles something else and barely moves her lips so I cannot make heads or tails out of it.)

Benjamin puts a quick damper on Leticia's win with Gus's case, forcing Mal to provide witnesses in her favor.  Benji's pissed that she didn't meet to "service" him last night even though he knew that she needed to prepare for this morning's trial.  She's equally pissed that he couldn't manage to understand how important it was for her professionally to take Gus's case on by herself and to win it.

Back in Records, Ric reads through the old findings about his elderly friend's house.  Seems the 2nd wife and his adult kids don't get along and his buddy wanted to leave it to the kids when he dies (?) but the paperwork shows he'll lose that case.  His friend is only a laborer and has no money to fight it in court.

Back at the jail, Big Crook says he hears that Carlos's case is finally going to trial.  Don't forget him.  Carlos says once he's out and back at work he will look into what he can do for him.  "--Free of charge, right, Counselor?  Oh, BTW, you haven't been bothered by anybody around here, right?"  He signals for his brawny guerrero to stand next to him and the two then walk off.   "--See ya!"

Ale heads off to the jail to see Carlos.

Gus takes a case for a man named Augustin whose wife left him; he's asking for child support.  She's a bookkeeper/accountant.  He's got high medical bills now.  He needs her help.

Leo and Rob visit Alan at his office.  They advises he's on the list of witnesses and want to go over some of the questions they might ask him.  Al says "--Sorry, I cannot help you. Carlos..." (muffled and unintelligible) I believe he says something like he didn't want Alan involve with his personal business or some such.  Rob and Leo tell him to patch up whatever has gone wrong and do it fast.  Al says nope, whatever he does Carlos always considers it bad news.  So, he refuses to support his cousin.  He will only testify as to what he actually saw.  Then, Rob says, just state the facts and it'll be fine.  But of course he will, says ol' Al.

At the jail, it's quite obvious that Ale doesn't want Carlos to touch her.  He ignores it and tells her how he'll be getting out of there soon now and they'll be able to pick up right where they left off.  Her manner leaves that much in doubt.  He tells her it's torture not being able to see her.  She struggles and lies that she's not been there because she's been so busy.  He says tell me the truth, is it work or something else?

At the M.E.'s, Juanito brings another coffee to the dude at the desk.  M.E. Dude advises he's asked his buddy there to take a look at the paperwork and see if he can give him something to report on.  But, please, Juan, take a break and don' t hang around the office.  Juan gives him his cell phone number instead.

Carlos continues the cheery act and gets Ale to agree to be a character witness for him.  He keeps pushing her about how they'll soon be together again, and blah, blah, blah.  She's cold and distant when she leaves.  She'll see him at the trial.   He calls after her but she ignores him.

Olivia shows Vicki her next Mr. Mexico Match match-up.

Isabel cries over her family portrait and her son wants to know why.  He wants his daddy.  What's up?  (The violins and guitar are fabulous but the effect is overly MELODRAMATIC--as I guess was intended.  Well, mission accomplished mis editores de música)

Oli meets her Mr. Macho at the appointed club. He knows she's a lawyer.  He simply admits to working in an office, but nothing grandiose (I think).  He lives alone because he's never met Ms. Right--until tonight.  (What a move maker!  Well, Oli may be a pushover for those damned fine dimples of his.)

Isa calls Gus to tell him their son wants to see him but she doesn't.  They need first to talk to a psychologist to see how best to explain their divorce.

Mr. Macho says all the right things.  Ooooooh they have sooooo much in common.  He's old fashioned?  He wants a family, love, and all the things that go with it.  He may even know how to cook.  (Again, bad audio and no CC so am not certain.)  Oli texts a picture of a heart to Vicki under pretext of messaging her office.  Guess Danny Dimples is a keeper.

Back at Vega the next morning, Rob and Leo are readying their case  for trial.  Al is there.  They want to go over the types of questions.  Al blows off what they bring up--his being a witness is handled differently than being there as an attorney. "-- Sure, sure...
I know what's what."

Before Ale leaves that evening Ric comes in to offer his emotional support.  He'll always be there for her, no matter what she decides about Carlos.  They seal the sentiment with a kiss.

When Ale arrives at the courtroom for the trial then next morning the press are there to pressure her for a statement.  Bad vibes.

Juanito gets a tie as a gift from Mama for his first day in court working for the Vega firm.  He puts it on for luck and leaves to first check at the M.E.'s for the report--just in case.  He arrives at the court room with it just as the trial begins and the judge is to enter.

Leo has the floor first.  He advises all there that his client is a professional, an attorney with a spotless record and a spotless past.  Even his fiancee is there to back him up--not usually likely, they must admit--considering the circumstances.  His client was arrested not because there were facts to back the case, but because the state's attorney was anxious to get a case on the books.  The state's attorney insists Carlos was the last one with the victim and had slept with her the night before, that being proof enough to accuse him (in Mexico).  And, so it begins.....

Jardinera: Good luck.

Juan comes through.

Alejandra is dressed like she belongs in a 1970s blaxploitation film.

Oli's new dude gives me a shady vibe.

Gustavo is going to end up wearing Isabel down because of the kid.

Milena still had an evil smile on her face.

Taxi Girl wasn't on last night's episode.

The Ariana Grande looking prosecutor is still angry.

That's all I got.

Benjamin and Leticia got into an argument over his inability to get away from the wife.

Ricardo and Alejandra are still trying to define their relationship, dependent on Carlos.

Alan noticeably does not want to help Carlos out as a witness, and the three attorneys are now reluctant to call him to the stand.

The body language between Carlos and Alejandra was almost comical. He wants hugs and kisses and she wants to run away. Reminded me of Pepé Le Pew with his amores.

Anon207: "The Ariana Grande looking prosecutor is still angry."

ROFLOL.

Jardinera, thank you for another superb recap. I especially loved your "Ricardo falls on his sword for Alejandra" and "Benji's pissed that she didn't meet to "service" him last night".

Ricardo's case is about his godfather, who is like a father to him. He wanted to be generous with his children so he gifted them his house as an early inheritance. The problem is that the children hate their father's new wife and are now trying to evict him (desalojar) from the abovementioned house.
Ricardo looked at the document that he took from the archive and said that he lost the case because the verdict (el fallo) was against his godfather. I don't understand what verdict he is talking about, but verdict generally implies the case already being adjudicated.

Alan said :"Carlos doesn't want me to meddle in his affairs, therefore I am not going to be able to help you (no los puedo apoyar)"

Irene

Gracias, Jardinera. Lots of vibes and body language in this episode.

Anyone with rudimentary vision could see that Alejandra really doesn't want to be with Carlos anymore. He is refusing to see this. She should tell him and get it over with before he gets out of jail.

Is anyone else getting the vibe that Benjamin doesn't really want Leticia to get to senior attorney? I think he's afraid that she might leave him in the dust. She can and she should. She is way above Milena in terms of where she can go in the world and should not lose sight of that.

Isabel just might take Gustavo back for Luis' sake. However, she should banish him to a separate bedroom at least temporarily.

As far as Carlos' case goes, Alan's thing about testifying "only to what he saw" has nothing to do with what Leo was asking of him. I actually wondered after seeing this episode whether he intends to testify for the prosecution and wasn't about to admit this to Leo, Rob, and Juan.

Irene: Thanks for filling in those blanks for me. It gets frustrating at times.

Urban: I thought the same thing: is Alan going to surprise Leo and Rob by testifying for the prosecution.

As for Letya, I get the feeling that Benji is such a male chauvinist that he's thinking he'll make Sr. attorney before Leticia. NOw if Vega makes her the next Sr. attorney before him....whoooooah is it going to be nasty between the two of them! He's probably competing for that position. I thought he was already a Sr. attorney but he is not.

I am glad that Carlos' trial finally began. Maybe our valiant defense attorneys will manage to prove his innocence, Alejandra will finally dump him and we will finally get a proper villain on this show).
Unfortunately, once more, the procedure is portrayed incorrectly.
In any criminal trial almost in any country, Mexico included, the prosecution presents its arguments first and only then the defense.
The facts are always presented at the beginning of the proceeding so that the judge/ the jury have all the relevant information to base their decision on.
In correct procedure, our Ariana Grande looking fiscal would have started by summarizing the facts and then the evidence that points towards the person on trial being the one that committed the crime in question.

If this were the case, we would have finally known what was the exact cause of death of the stripper(what kind of asphyxiation it was) and what is the evidence on which the prosecution based it's decision to charge Carlos with murder.
After the judge/jury got the necessary information through the prosecution's opening statement, it is time for an opening statement by the defense. In this opening statement, the defense would have presented their version of facts as well as summarized the evidence that is going to be used to refute prosecution's case.
Opening statements are basically road maps to what comes next, which is presentation of evidence and witnesses and generally contain a variation of "...and we are going to prove that the defendant committed this crime/ is innocent.

I might have missed something in one of the previous episodes but it seems that we don't even know what are the exact charges against Carlos(is it a first degree murder, a second degree murder, a voluntary manslaughter or involuntary manslaughter). Were we presented with the prosecution's opening statement first, we and the judge would have had this important information.

Loved the title Jardinera and "Ricardo falls on his sword for Alejandra." He is so darn noble sometimes I want to gag.

Juan seems to be playing a Columbo type role on this one. Seemingly obtuse and annoying while getting the results that he wants, after thoroughly wearing down whoever stands in his way. All he lacks is a wrinkled trenchcoat to complete the picture.

Olivia's new flame is giving me very bad vibes [even though I like the actor]. We don't really know what he does (I bet he's unemployed) and he's coming on way too strong. I think she's being set up for something pretty awful. Just my paranoid opinion. But something is waaay off with this guy.

Could Benjamin have been any more churlish!? The stronger Leticia gets, the less he will support her. And she'll be out the door. His door anyway.

Can't see Isabel taking Gustavo back. But she'll definitely have to arrange joint custody. Sad sad case. A lot of harm done over a male ego trip.

Thanks, Jardinera.

Olivia finally meets a guy who distracts her from Leo, but I'm getting a scam artist vibe. Oli, google his background.

At least with the Mexican system, unlike in the U.S., Ale didn't have to do her "stand by your man" pose before a room full of peering spectators. Nice that her pop showed up.

Judy, I am sure you are right about Olivia's tinder match (by the way, that's the guy that played Emanuel in La Sombra del Pasado). He does have all the right answers and is generally too good to be true.

Irene

I think Benjamin & Leticia will get found out by Karina, and Benjamin will go crawling back to Karina (like Gustavo is begging Isabel).

However, I think Karina is stronger & smarter than either Benjamin & Leticia give her credit for and I wouldn't be surprised if Karina already knows Benjamin is cheating on her with someone...and doesn't care.

Benjamin is very needy and weak (and selfish). I'm guessing Karina already knows this about him and keeps him around for her own purposes, unlike Isabel who had no idea Gustavo was so weak.

Even if Isabel decides to stay with Gustavo, she will never look at him the same way again because he's not the person she thought he was, he's this weak...thing. After it's all said and done she may beg Milena to take Gustavo away.

I wouldn't blame Isabel for never taking Gustavo back, but (apparently) he was a good husband for the first 10 years of the marriage and the mid-life crisis hit and he lost his head among things. Benjamin though seems to have always been a loutish husband.

I also get a creep vibe from Oluvia's date despite that this actor is usually cast as a nice guy. I'm betting he's a fortune hunter.

Karina should be tough as nails with Benjamin once she finds out he's been fooling around. He is weak and selfish. He doesn't even have Gustavo's good qualities like his compassion for his clients and that he knows when to watch and keep his mouth shut. That Benjamin loves to poke verbal needles into his colleagues will probably be his downfall at work.

Thanks Jardinera.

I'm glad Carlos' trial has begun. I want him out even if it means he'll be a constant threat to Ale and Ric's relationship. I'm just tired of seeing him in jail playing the victim to Ale.

Oh my eyes my eyes! Ale is a walking fashion disaster, and her hair is not doing anything to help the situation.

Jardinera--I have few superlatives left with which to label your recaps. Thank you for your double-duty efforts to keep us up with this.

I think Benji is already a senior attorney. It's Letty that isn't, so I go with Urban's interpretation. Letty is an easy mark for Benji--no sweat relationship. He gets some nookie for free--or at a low cost, so of course he likes the status quo. She, on the other hand, gets what she thinks is a little status and support from a sr. attorney.

I guess everybody noticed Ale's body language with Carlos--except Carlos. I guess the light is too dim in that visitors' room. Yep, Alan is going to be trouble in the court.

Irene--I'm counting on you to set the court record straight after tonight's episode. I'm doing the recap. Note, everybody, the recap will probably not be up until tomorrow mid-day.

Oli's smooth new Mexico Match is none other than Alex Sirvent, lately of LQLVMR, Amor Bravio, Sombra and Quiero Amarte (at least the ones I watched). Oli is definitely starry eyed while MM has nailed another notch--he spells trouble. I hope he makes it for another few episodes.

Ïrene: Thanks for the legal backgrounders.

Judy: Columbocito in a wrinkled trenchcoat -- definitely! Juan sometimes reminds me of The Little Engine That Could. As for Ric's nobility towards Alejandra, it is cartoonish and makes his character really tedious IMHO. I am not into his and Ale's romance which is bland and totally juvenile.

Ava: Maybe Ale's long hair is perhaps to make her look super young. However, this time for me it is as totally boring as she and Ric are to watch as a couple.

Anita/Urban: I also think Mexico's Mr. Dimples is a fortune hunter who will have Oli and Vicki both drooling soon. It's as if he had Oli all figured out and maybe had even done a bit of research on her. The first thing out of his mouth was about her being an attorney. Are those dimples the shape of dollar signs?

Irene--Whatever the charges against Carlos, they (it) were serious enough to have him held in jail until his trial. No Personal Recognizance or ankle bracelet for him.

JudyB-I love your characterization of Juanito as Columbo. He even smiles a lot to disarm the folks he needs to get information from.

Oli's MM date is how the perfect scam artist operates. He lets her tell all about herself, likes, concerns, opinions. He listens and then mirrors them exactly, never having to give any real information about himself. I know, it happened to me on a long-ago phone call where the guy asked me to guess who I was talking to. After that, he made it easy to slip into some disgusting images. It was hard to ever see that friend again in the same light, after I realized I'd been duped. Thank goodness for caller ID!

Jardinera if that's what they were going for they failed because it doesn't make her look young. It makes her look older actually, well at least that's how I see it.

They shoulda cut it to shoulder length and not made it so severely straight if super young is the direction they were going.

Olivia is such a naive person,I hope she doesn't get into any trouble.

Thank you Jardinrea654. This story is
Mildly hot. Meaning the bad people are
Not that.....bad? Maybe they're waitin til carlos gets out of the poky then turn Up the nastiness of the bad guys.

Carlos has an impeccable reputation &

And those cute dimples do not make an
Appearance. Poor things they miss ric.

Yahoo for Juan!He is such a happy guy.
He is gonna be busy cuz he gotta find
Out who murder death killed patty and
That poor girl that asslan screwed over.
They should give us all a break and let isa forgive gus, send Mel away
Have the baby, did or not, and send the bebe back to him and isa to raise
And yall know she is nice enough to help Him raise"her".That's right it's gonna be a girl gus jr would love his little sister. Hey just tryin to have a happy Ending for isa.....and gus He's a nice Guy,who just screwed up really really badly. And it's Friday and I'm happy cuz I like the weekends.

Ok that's all I got for now.

Now I'm not saying that Melina is pregnant I was just guessing and, you know, imagining. But it could happen, and it could be a girl. Anyways I really want to see what the recap is for tonights episode going to be.
Ok later.

Nina--I hope you can wait a little longer. The recap has been written, but not typed up or posted. Need a little shut eye. Will finish tomorrow. Poor Carlos, eh? Now he's the one being deceived. At least he can breathe fresh air, enjoy the sunshine and eat decent food.
