Por Amar Sin Ley, 4/30/18 Chapter 40: Gustavo--Front and Center--Again

Herewith are your court reporter's hastily jotted shorthand notes. (She pulled double duty today dealing with some pesky, nasty weeds and generally getting her hands dirty.) Tomorrow, she will transcribe, amplify and/or correct, if needed.

* Gus is confronting Ale repeating his pushy (selfish) attempts to leave Isy in ruin--it will serve her right for filing for divorce. She should of thought about that beforehand. Almost nose to nose, he tells Ale HE DOES NOT WISH TO BE DIVORCED. Y punto.

* Carlos is explaining to Alan why he didn't confront and accuse Ale about her behavior. He sure she's got a thing for Bust-a-man-te and he can't risk alienating her. Alan thinks it's mostly in his head.

* Ale tells Gus what he is proposing is not fair to Isy, nor to his son and she's willing to stand up against him for what is right. Gus is yelling that she doesn't have as much experience as he does and she doesn't know who she's up against.

*Rob has called Juan to his office. He hands Juan his first paycheck. Juan's eyes pop. He's overjoyed, but thankfully, doesn't jump for joy. Rob says they still need to keep looking for Tatiana and he wants those photos of all the hotel guests who came and went that night, so he tells Juan to hop to it.

*Elena has taken the kids to get their ice cream. Ric is waiting for them. While Elena stays discretely away, he gently tells them about Joel dying--he had an accident. The kids are ready to bring him out of his doldrums.

*Not satisfied with the results of his confrontation with Ale, Gus goes to see Vicky next. He's so agitated he's practically apoplectic. At the top of his lungs he blames Ale for his situation. She's behaving very unprofessionally, messing with his family. Vicky lights into Gus. After getting him to calm down a bit, she tells him like it is. It's actually his fault he's in this predicament. Gus can't accept that. He accuses Vicky of always taking the woman's side.

*Ale decides to call Ric on the phone. He's still at the ice cream shop. He insists she's not interrupting anything and to catch him up with whatever it was she called about. Once Elena knows it's Ale, she makes sure Ale hears her call Ric, "Mi Amor." Ale continues as if nothing was wrong and tells Ric that for sure they'll talk in the morning.

*Carlos goes to see Albert the Straight Shooter. Al can see who it is because his house is made of glass. Before he even invites Carlos in, he makes his very generous offer to Fanny about the business. When Carlos tells him what he's really there for, Al smugly insists he can't be tried twice for the same offense. True, says Carlos, but they can appeal the sentence. Now he lets Carlos in and offers him a cognac and whatever else he wants to drop the appeal. Carlos lets Al know he isn't dropping the appeal. Al wants to know why, then, did he take the appeal, if not for money. Carlos loftily answers he took it to do justice.

*Oli comes to see Ale and tells her about Gus' melt-down. His transgression is, well, like Carlos'. She's reminded that Gus was with Milena for a year. Oli lets Ale know that the next day is her "date" with Arturo--in court. Ale promises to be there for her.

* Ric and Elena bring the kids back to her place. He agrees to stay the whole afternoon. Elena is soooo grateful--to be together, there for each other, like family. He reminds her that she can't have illusions about something that is not. Elena bats her eyes and comes hither, wearing her slinky black one-shouldered evening-going-to-the-opera instead of the ice cream shop top. Using her kids as pawns, sniff, sniff, she's fully aware she didn't react well to the divorce, but has accepted things as they are. He's the best dad anyone could ask for, especially when the kids' ingrate bio-dad wouldn't have anything to do with them, sniff (just one sniff at the end).

*Carlos "drops in" to see Rob to report, indignantly, on how Alberto offered him money to drop the appeal. They jaw a little more. Carlos is there for them for whatever they need. He asks Rob to pass on his condolences to Ric. He knows what Ale did. HIS novia has a big heart. Rob tries not to look puzzled.

*Ric and Fede are playing a video game and Nattie brings cookies and milk and sits down beside him. (Yawn.) Elena plops down to watch. Elena slides her hand over to Ric's shoulder, kinda like a tarantula testing its prey.

*Now, as long as he's at Vega, Carlos "peeks in" on Ale, mentioning that he really came to see Rob (and attempting to steal s smooch) but if she's not busy....she says he can stay. She says they need to talk about his offer. Carlos demurs, probably enjoying the view offered by Ale's plunging neckline. Ale asks if they could go out to eat together--she just has a couple of things to finish up. He'd be delighted.

*Now, it's Oli and Vic that get to talking about Gus. Then the subject shifts to Arturo's hearing/sentencing. Vic is sure he'll be in jail for many years and Oli can rest easy. Oli tells her she's sworn off men, completely, entirely--except maybe Leo. He asked her out to dinner, just the two of them.

*On their way out to eat, Carlos and Ale pass the three useless receptionists checking through that same shoe catalog. After saying goodbye to Carmen and with Carlos' arm around Ale they head for the elevator. Rob has observed all this and wonders out loud to Carmen regarding Ale and Carlos having patched things up. Carmen says it certainly seems like it.

*Juan gets home and shows his mama his check for $40,000. (Whoa, there, it's Mexican pesos, which comes out to $2,137.20 USD--still, not bad for a couple of weeks work and having to spend time in bars getting unwanted lap daces.)

*Over dinner, Carlos is telling Ale about Alberto bribing him. He proudly states that there are some attorneys who would accept being suborned, but using Ale as his shining example, he'd never do that. He can segue immediately into her noble nature and values and that's why he admires and loves her. (NO, NO, that phrase belongs to Mr. Darcy and YOU, Carlos Ibarra, are no Mr. Darcy.) Clearly embarrassed, Ale wants to change the subject. Carlos asks how it went in Queretaro. He lays all the success at her feet and that's why she's just perfect--for him. Ale brings him about abruptly. She tells him she's made a decision....

*Ooooh, Juan has taken Fer out for coffee and dessert. First he tells her how proud he was to get his first check, to be told he's doing good work and to be treated like one of the team. Then he wants to know all about her. When she tries to explain that she's into plataformas digitales, his eyes glaze over and so do mine.

*Ric gets a knock at his apartment door. Hoping it might be Ale, he peeps through the peephole and sees who it is. He opens the door anyway and lets Rob and Leo in. They're there to make him feel better and feed him beer and gossip. He's feeling a lot better since he was able to be with his kids. After what happened with Joel, he realizes what it is to grow up without a father, as it was with him. He's not going to let that happen with his. He also relates how it went with Ale the other night. She was so good to him. He can't stop thinking about her. Rob brings him down out of the rapture. He relates how he saw Ale and Carlos leaving the office together. It looks as if they are patching things up, according to Carlos himself. Ric is furious with himself for having delusions. He now believes what Ale felt for him the other night was pity. The boys think he should talk to her first. No, he's decided. He's bowing out. He doesn't want to upset their reconciliation. Then Gus's strange behavior comes up in the conversation. Ric will go talk to him tomorrow. Of course, he's already been through what Gus is facing.

*...about that decision. Ale does not want the apartment. She won't be able to be in it without thinking of what he did. Carlos won't take no for an answer. Pressuring her by telling her he won't pressure her, he reminds her of all they meant to each other and what they were going to share. He'll wait for her, sure that one day (soon, he hopes) she will forgive him. No, she insists, there's no timetable, she can't promise something that may never happen. She tells him to sell the apartment, rent it out, whatever. She'll never use it. He agrees (but doesn't give up).

* Juan has returned home, before curfew it might be noted. He tells his mama all about his date. He's come to realize that not only is she very intelligent, but also very lovely. Susana is pleased with her efforts in match-making. Next day, Fer shows up at Susana's door and she tells Fer everything Juan said about her, all good, especially the pretty part.

* At the hearing/sentencing, Vic is standing with Oli. So are Leo and Ale. She's a bit scared, but Ale suggests she act as an attorney would, defending her client, and tell the court everything. That should give her strength.

*Ric has come to see Gus. Ric tells him he has the experience with these things. Little by little, it gets better. He recommends staying calm and maybe consider seeing a therapist. At this bit of advice, Gus flies off the handle. He accuses Ric of taking Ale's side. Ric tries to protest, but Gus knows what he's talking about--Ric is sweet on Ale, so it's only natural he'd be on her side.

*Oh dear, what on earth can happen next. I do wish Alonso would enter the Gus fray, for the sake of his firm and his stable of lawyers. And (thank you, Nina) -- "if he had long hair extensions, he'd flip them in his face and walk out."

This will be so long no one will have the patience to read it. But I'm a loquacious night owl. Apology given.

Anita,

Wow, did you prepare a great recap or what!!! Fantastic Anita!! I really admire you and all the other recappers for giving your time and dedication to your fellow Caraymates and feeding our (my) addiction.

It's a breath of fresh air to lose oneself in the fictitious world of novelaland. It's my favorite thing to do in my retirement. No knitting or baking cookies for me!

Is anyone else bothered by DZ's ape-like, IMO, appearance with those unbearable, IMO, skin-tight, pects show-off shirts? Sometimes I think he's going to pop out of his shirts.
He is reminds me of KingKong.

One has to appreciate José María Torre Hütts' fashion sense of long ago wide lapels and daring, plaid/stripe fabrics. I, for one, appreciate his second career occupation of a fashion designer.

Carlos's whining is really getting on my nerves. He isn't giving up is he? He is a perfect scam artist. Thank goodness Ale finally put her foot down about "their" apartment. But she still lacks the guts to tell him to shove off! I guess we will have to wait until the end to see her showing a backbone.

Who in the world cleans all those glass windows at Alberto's house? Wouldn't the evaporation from that pool (or some such thing, not a gold fish pond for sure) cause mildew and mold growth? And the tiles are, like, ½-inch square with tons of grout. Can you imagine scrubbing away between those miniature tiles?

It's a shame that the typical Mexican Architecture of gorgeous homes and haciendas of times past are giving way to glass/modernistic homes. Aren't the City folk afraid of thieves breaking that overabundance of glass?

I can't remember the last time the stage settings of Televisa were filmed at beautiful Mexican/Spanish structures--maybe 'Soy tu Dueña' was the last one. MCET was Juan Osorio’s idea of a home!

Don't get me wrong, I appreciate most modern architecture (when situated in the right environment); but Mexico has always set itself in a premier historical position for this hemisphere. What, the USA has The Biltmore House and Hearst Castle, along with Steve Jobs' touch/karma sensitive structure.

I do watch a great deal of older novelas and appreciate the stage settings in the Novelas de Época. Here's looking to you Carla Estrada--please come back!!!!

I posted this earlier on the Telemundo LADO site: Why do novela writers always seem to portray the galáns as dimwhits, stupid, and gullible characters? And the actors, male and female, always seem to believe every word someone says? Famous words in telenovelas: "Nada Ni Nadie nos Van a Separar!" y "Te Juro".

Aren't men more savvy than what they are being portrayed as? The fact that the male laywers of Vega & Associates are falling for Carlos's imaginary relationship with Ale is funny. No perspective on their part.

Gustavo has really lost it. I hope Isabel socks it to him! He's as bad of a whiner as Carlos is. I really hope Isabel drops him dead. Why is Alonso putting up with his totally nonprofessional yelling, screaming, threatening, and throwing chairs actions? Are we really suppose to believe that kind of behavior is allowed in a workplace?

At least we were mostly spared Alan's presence tonight.

Until later ya'll. Can't wait to read others' comments.

Victoria: Gustavo cares about himself!

In other news: disgusted to hear about Dominican Republic throwing Taiwan under the bus in favor of PRC.

Thanks, Anita. Great job. Going into an all-day meeting but will return.

Seeing Ale with Carlos kind of backs up his lies. She should've swatted his hand away when he put it on her lower back as they entered the office elevator. For Roberto, that confirmed what Carlos said.

If I remember correctly, Alonso is the one who assigned Ale to Gustavo's divorce. He's the one that should shut down Gustavo's estupideces (love that word!).

Victoria, I guess we won't be fighting over the same guys. :D I like how Ric fills out his shirts.

Steve
Thank you so much for mentioning the China/DR news. The DR went from Trujillo to big time gambling and banking corruption. The Country will never be the same. Once it was a paradise, now it's another Narco-land like so many other countries. Maybe that's one reason that Narco-novelas are so popular for Telemundo.

On Telemundo's site this novela is listed as a "Series" not a Telenovela. Does this mean it will turn into another Señor del Cielo or Señora Acero nonstop TV series?

Hello to everyone👋. This was a great episode. Hopefully, the writers keep it up.

Great stuff, Anita.

Alejandra needs to haul off and slap Carlos every time he touches her. She also needs to say out loud that she will not be controlled because that is what he is trying to do.

As for Ricardo he should know by now not to trust anything that Carlos tells anyone about anything.

Finally, every lawyer who tells clients' tales out of the office should be sanctioned for it. Alejandra should not be discussing her cases with Carlos.

Just a reminder, all--We try not to discuss current events on our blog.

It's hard to like Alejandra when she doesn't say anything or do anything to Carlos' advances. Deep down inside she likes the attention, otherwise if she were so repulsed by his cheating he wouldn't be able to lay a finger on her.

Gustavo got ugly fast. He couldn't possibly believe he was going to walk out of a one year extramarital affair without a single consequence. How long before his divorce starts to affect his professional life.

I think Brick looks ok in his shirts, maybe they're a little too tight. But he was a model before, so he can pull them off. I wonder if Jose Maria Torre does his own wardrobe.

Alonso likely doesn't know about Gustavo's outbursts in the office. Leticia needs to get ready because there will be an open senior attorney position soon.

Gustavo wants to punish Isabel for not going along with the program, just like he punished Milena for not going along with the program. He doesn't love Isabel, he loves the idea of Isabel and he needs to punish her for not letting him have his way. Gustavo refuses to take responsibility. It's Milena's fault he had an affair with her for a year. It's Isabel's fault he has the sadz because she won't tolerate his cheating. It's Alejandra's fault Isabel wants a divorce. Victoria always takes the women's side. Ricardo isn't supporting him because he just wants to get into Alejandra's pants.

And it will be Alejandra's fault too when Alonso boots him out for flipping up tables and acting a fool in the office. Boy, bye. All Alejandra has to do is air those sex tapes in court and the judge will be asking Isabel to name her price.

And JMTH had a perfectly crafted suit last night, all of the stripes were matched and then he mixed the patterns on the vest. Perfection.

My dear Anita, thank you for improving my day with your breezy and humorous recap. It was fantastic and full of great lines. To mention just a few :

"He's overjoyed, but thankfully, doesn't jump for joy"
"Elena bats her eyes and comes hither, wearing her slinky black one-shouldered evening-going-to-the-opera instead of the ice cream shop top"
"Elena slides her hand over to Ric's shoulder, kinda like a tarantula testing its prey"
"NO, NO, that phrase belongs to Mr. Darcy and YOU, Carlos Ibarra, are no Mr. Darcy"
" When she tries to explain that she's into plataformas digitales, his eyes glaze over and so do mine"
"Juan has returned home, before curfew it might be noted"

and the best line ever:

"Whoa, there, it's Mexican pesos, which comes out to $2,137.20 USD--still, not bad for a couple of weeks work and having to spend time in bars getting unwanted lap daces".

Irene

Gus feels entitled because--he's the MAN. He still subscribes to the notion that since boys will be boys, the women can't complain. The women they marry must be saintly, virginal and stay in the kitchen. He's really behind the times. Nowadays, girls will be girls before marriage (and sometimes during), they are not saintly--they have a voice, and they certainly don't stay in the kitchen, children or no. (Ok, off my soap box.)

Interesting tid bit about JMTH. Now I understand the retro-wardrobe. I didn't think, as a man about town, he would neglect how he looks to the female pigeons he chases.

Thanks, Irene--luckily there were no courtroom scenes in this episode. I'd have had to pay more attention to what was going on.

Gustavo is the worst, most loathsome hypocrite and a sniveling one to boot. I couldn't stand him before, but now I outright abhor him.
There is no way a managing partner would ignore such a behavior from an employee. Alonso should have had a stern talk with Gustavo immediately after the sex tape leak and he should have prohibited Leticia from representing Gustavo in that ridiculous criminal prosecution of Milena, which brought more negative publicity to Vega and Associates. And now, when Gustavo went from office to office threatening, screaming, spewing venom and belittling his female colleagues to boot (not to mention disrupting everybody's work and being a giant pain in the --s) he should have intervened immediately. I personally would have considered terminating such an employee.

I now understand why, even though Gustavo is a good and experienced lawyer, he never made partner and is still a junior lawyer.

Irene

Thanks Anita!

Hmm in all of my watching (I'm currently on episode 15) I'm still confused why Carlos hates Ricardo besides being competition. Is it really just of competition or did something traumatic happen between them? As R.Lee Ermey would say: "What is your major malfunction numbnuts?"

I thought Benji& Letty were stupid but Gus is dumber and smarter at the same time. Dumber because he succumbed to infidelity and smarter because Gus knew how to hide it better. Atleast until before the recent episodes.

Is there a more useless and scummy character than Alan?. He doesn't even fit the villian category because he is not entertaining enough. He's just pure scum. I could say the same for Benji.

I gave up on Alejandra and Brick long ago, but Brick's defeatist attitude is so damn annoying. Worst galan ever! He is so spineless that he doesn't want to upset his true love's reconciliation with her cheating ex. Maybe in next episode he is going to send them wine and chocolates to increase their chances of a reconciliation. Shouldn't leave it to chance.

Irene

I would wager that the worst, most boring galan ever to me besides the usual cardbox galans was Gabriel Soto in El Vino. His depression almost burned the family vineyard to the ground. Oh yes his wife got murdered but at the time it was thought it was an accident. He always was swayed by emotion and his dumb depression which let his enemies play him like Chopin played the piano.

Oh yes! hopefully doesn't jump for joy!...but Juan was close...so close and like Irene, also loved this:

"Elena slides her hand over to Ric's shoulder, kinda like a tarantula testing its prey."

So good, as was your reference to Mr. Darcy. No, Carlos is no Darcy but he's playing his hand very cleverly, whereas Ric the Bric is not. And Elena is also doing everything right to win Ric back. Won't happen but I admire the wisdom of her sneaky strategy.

Anita, you rascal, you made me laugh out loud with "Alberto the straight shooter". Hah. Good one. Have to admire his strategy also. Even it is all going to come to nought.

Lord have mercy, how many times have we seen that friggin shoe catalog and those shaded peach stilletos!? I might have fallen for them back in the day, and I have the damaged tootsies to show for it, but still. Enough with the endless product placement.

Court Reporter, you were on fire today. So funny and clever. Found the episode a bit tedious, but the recap a delight.

Alonso DID have a talk with Gustavo and warned him if his shenanigans with Milena started affecting the firm, he'd have to go. He also told Gustavo that he was still there because he was a good lawyer.

At the time, the shenanigans with Milena were not affecting Gustavo in the workplace.

The criminal case didn't bring negative attention to Vega & Associates; the negative attention was Gustavo specific. The only opposing lawyer who has brought it up is Lorenza's lawyer and her asshole behavior in the courtroom overshadowed Gustavo's sex tape that had nothing to do with a child custody case.

Nobody at Vega & Associates should be representing Isabel, I would agree with that. The reason Alejandra was assigned to the case was she was the newbie and not close to anyone in the situation. That said, Gustavo is NOW causing a ruckus in the workplace by threatening Alejandra, screaming, tossing stuff around, having outbursts at Vicky & Ricky. If Gustavo continues and/or if Alonso finds out, Vega & Associates will have an opening very soon.

Then what will happen is Gustavo will likely blame Alejandra and go after her.

We now know why Ricardo is so hung up on Elena's kids, because he never had a father himself.

Oh, but tedious episode or no, wanted to stand up and clap for Juan when he said, "But wait...TELL ME ABOUT YOU." And bless his heart he TRIED to be interested, he really did.

He clearly could have stayed in his "let me dazzle you with my brilliance" mode like he does with Mom, but no, he shifted gears. Alas, I'm a good listener and too many times, I have sat for hours while some man droned on and on about whatever he was reading and/or thinking about. I'm giving Juan big, big kudos for switching the spotlight off himself for a change.

Anita, thank you for a perfectly MARVELOUS recap! I think I enjoyed it more than I would have enjoyed the actual episode. ;}

Anita, another vote for the tarantula comparison!

If the sex tape was affecting the firm we would know that by now. Gustavo won Augustin's case. No judge worth his (non-existent) robe would hold that sex tape against him because it had nothing to do with those proceedings. Lorenza's behavior was what lost her the attempt at custody and causing pain to her ex. In addition to being well-prepared, Gustavo is capable of controlling himself in the courtroom and controlling his clients' behavior. That was all that mattered.

When Benjamin's number comes up -- and it will -- he will suffer more. He treats his wife much worse than Gustavo ever treated Isabel. We don't know how long he and Leticia have been defiling desks in V&A's offices but Leticia is a greater threat than Milena would ever have been because -- unlike Milena -- she isn't a floozy. She is a capable attorney who should shop around for a new firm. Since Benjamin also has a track record for rudeness and insensitivity toward his colleagues and not being a team player -- and now taking a case under the table -- Alonso has excellent grounds for terminating him.

Anita, so many gems in your recap. In addition to the the hands-down "tarantula" favorite, I loved these monikers:

Isy for the regal Isabel

Bust-a-man-te for the love-sick sap

Albert the Straight Shooter

Ale is so indulgent with Carlos, I'm reminded of the old Flip Wilson ditty, "How Can I Miss You If You Never Go Away?"

Oh thank you Anita, this is a very fun
Filled recap. But oh my gosh! What the
Hell is wrong with gus?"It serves her right for filing for devorce".And "she

ThInk you Anita. This was fun.

Thank you Anita♡

Count--In case you check in again, here's where the rivalry began. For the most part it is one-sided. Carlos hates Ricky. When they got out of law school, they both applied to the prestigious Vega firm for a slot. Ric got tapped on the shoulder for the position. Since Ric won the spot, naturally he'd have no hard feelings. Carlos on the other hand has been seething ever since--even though he and Alan established a lucrative practice of their own (based on fraud, bribes and mismanagement aside).

Hey folks. Maybe Alonso took a few days off to go to Cancun?

I meant to add that I thought all the comments were sterling. Can't wait to see how spineless Ric the not so much Bric any more, deals with the fictitious reconciliation. I bet he doesn't let Ale get a word in.

Sorry Anita and all. I forgot the policy and was carried away. That news was very sad for my husband and to me after fleeing from there.

JudyB
Product placemats for Toyota Tundra (it had a life of its own) and potato chips (I can't remember the brand) in LQLVMR, were placed in so many episodes, it was laughable.

CountX
Thanks for the Gabriel Soto tip. Now I'll know not to watch it.
Urban suggested I watch this one after it had aired about 20+ episodes. And I'm glad she did. It just takes me some time to get over DZ and his acting.

Anita
You have a very powerful and sharp memory. Thank you for the background Carlos/Roberto.

CountX
I caught up to the current episodes by bing- watching PASL on Telemundo's Android Application. The commercials are grouped together and there doesn't seem to be as many as on the Telemundo TV channel.
I've found that Telemundo uploads the daily episodes ~2am ESDT.

Ah the Toyota Tundra Victoria!...I remember it well. Those ubiquitous chips have been in a ton of telenovelas. Hmmmm....am I getting hungry right now? JudyB, resisting temptation.

Yes anon at 12:52pm. Gus blames everbody else
For the consequences of his actions.
It is not funny, but it is! When Isabel tells Gustavo off and even she was flabbergasted and yelled at him ‘’you had an affair with her for a year!!!! and now you want to send her to jail?? que te pasa????
