Por Amar Sin Ley, 5/1/18 Chapter 41 Martes: Evidence

Chapter 41: Evidence
I'm Christopher Mason. Crime and sin are somewhat different concepts. They are merely relatives whose existence are proven by those qualified to do so. We all hope that crime is followed by punishment, but first there has to be Evidence.
  • Gustavo got after Ricardo, insisting that he was taking Alejandra's side against him and that he considered this disloyal. Ricardo wasn't able to get a word in edgewise.
  • Leonardo presented Olivia's case to the judge in the trial area of the local penitentiary. The Rat With No Name was in his holding cell. Five previous victims stood in the room, as did Olivia, Victoria and Alejandra. Leonardo indicated that sentences in such cases are cumulative. He then had Olivia take the witness stand. She was sworn in and Leonardo started off with a leading question coming right from her own statement. When she identified The Rat as the man who had mislead her with the end purpose of robbery and violence he denied it. He was told he was out of order. When Leonardo asked why she came forward she said it was because she realized that there had to have been other victims and that she wanted to make sure he paid for his crimes. Also so that he could be off the streets and no longer in a position to hurt others.
The Rat's attorney tried to accuse her of seeking revenge and of a longer sentence than the law allowed. Victoria wanted to speak, but Alejandra stopped her.
  • Gustavo stubbornly continued to accuse Alejandra but Ricardo didn't let him get away with it. He reminded Gus that Alejandra was doing her job as Isabel's attorney and that job was to protect her. “You need the courage to face your mistakes here” was the theme of his reproach. Gustavo yelled “Nobody understands that I don't want a divorce!” He even repeated himself. Ricardo remained calm and told him “We all know that. But Isabel does and there is nothing anyone can do about it.” He advised Gustavo to get therapy to help him accept it.
Gustavo thought for a moment, then sat down and told Ricardo he was right. But he did not know what to do to accept it. Ricardo told him it would take time. Gustavo admitted he had been wrong and acted like a fool and that none of this was Alejandra's fault.
He then apologised to Ricardo, who told him it would all be alright in time.
  • The judge told the defense attorney that his comments were completely out of place and that he did not want to have to sanction him beyond that warning. The man conceded and the judge asked Leonardo if there was anything else. Leonardo described this as not merely the act of a delinquent. He had deceived, seduced, robbed, and struck Olivia and left her in danger of her life. Further, she was not the only victim as he had likely done this to any or all of the other women present. The defense attorney had nothing to add. Olivia was excused from the witness stand and the judge reviewed the case. Due to the charges and evidence he sentenced the Rat – known in the court as Edgar Cardozo – to twenty-five years in prison. In consideration of the other crimes against the other women he added another twenty-five years to the sentence for a total of fifty years.
The defendant did not cry out. Court was adjourned.
  • Edgar Cardozo was obviously lamenting that if he ever got out he would no longer own the assets that permitted him to commit these criminal acts.
  • The condemned man began crying out that this was unfair as he was led from the holding cell. Olivia thanked Leonardo who then received an “atta boy!” touch from Victoria and the other women converged to thank him as well.
  • For a nerdy lawyer this must have been an incredible sensation.
  • Juan dropped in on the medical examiner with a venti of his favorite drug. After commenting on Juan's stubbornness he told him it was his lucky day because he had the pathology report he had been waiting for. He handed him the report, telling him he would find it very interesting reading.
  • After all congratulatory statements had been made Leonardo suggested that they all go to celebrate. Victoria and Alejandra both declined, citing work. It was clear from looks they exchanged that this was intended to allow Leonardo and Olivia to be alone together away from the office. They left with their briefcases, leaving Olivia to suggest they go for a drink first.
    They left together.
  • Carlos and Alan talked about the appeal. Carlos gloated that Roberto was an idiot and that all the lawyers at Vega were while Alan mentioned that his strategy was to deliver exactly the opposite of what was expected of them. Carlos grinned maniacally as he said that the best of all this would be that Roberto would be forced out of Vega & Associates, which would embarrass Alonso.
  • At the restaurant Olivia felt as though all was finally over and she was much calmer. She had been concerned that The Rat would go free and try to get revenge. Leonardo considered this highly unlikely to happen. They started talking about their ability to trust future love interests. He told her he was over Ana Maria.
  • Alan was happy at the prospect of getting back at Roberto for accusing him of malpractice but Carlos told him not to confuse the issues. “You made a mistake while he fell into a trap,” he said. “So don't do it again.” He commented about “saving” Vega & Associates and wanting the entire world to know it. They moved on to El Ciego's case, arguing that his reputation provokes accusations. They planned to argue that constitutionally he is entitled to a presumption of innocence and claim that the gun was planted. Alan said he would go along with this but reminded Carlos that they could not afford to lose anything at this point.
  • Alejandra entered Ricardo's office in hopes of clarifying the situation they were looking to resolve. She told him how it went in court and he asked her to go to lunch with him. She agreed and excused herself for a moment to file documents. He looked tighter than an overwound Rolex.
  • Leonardo talked about not looking for a partner in future and being satisfied with work and friends. He was convinced that he would never love again.
  • Juan handed Roberto the pathology report. It stated that no fluid or vomitus was in the lungs of the dead prostitute nor was there evidence that any sleeping pills were cause of death. This meant that they needed to find Tatiana because her friend had obviously been murdered.
  • Alejandra and Ricardo sat down at their table and he said “We have to talk.” The words that nobody ever wants to hear. He then told her that since she was close to Carlos after his ordeal he had to respect that. She commented “In the same way that I have to respect your relationship with Elena because of the children.” It sounded like a reproach to him. “It's not a reproach; I see everything is good with her. For me, it's alright. It's better for Federico and Natalia. I wasn't going to say anything, but I know how your relationship is with her.”
“My relationship with Elena isn't like yours with Carlos. For us, love is over. But for you there are still many things to clarify.”
Alejandra looked confused at first, then annoyed.
“What Carlos and I have to settle isn't your business.”
“I don't want to be an obstacle for you.”
    “What are you thinking here?”
“It's obvious that we have many things to clear up in our lives.”
    “Just like that?”
“I want you to know that I feel a sincere affection for you and I hope you will be happy.”
“Is that what you brought me here to say?”
“Yes. That I want everything to be alright with you and me. And in that cause we should each go his own way.”
    “Why are you doing this?”
“Because it's better for both of us.”
    “Better for you, you mean.”
“You have history with Carlos, an ongoing story. I won't get in between the two of you. I can't do that.”
“I never said you did that.”
“I think it's better that we forget everything that happened between us.”
“I don't believe this. You know what hurts the most? That it doesn't matter to you what I feel or think. You made this decesion for both of us –”
“No; it was't like that –”
“Of course it is. It's not important to you what I say here. You just decided for both of us. I feel very deceived.”
    “Please don't say that.”
“I didn't expect it of you; you seemed different.”
“Yes. I will no longer be a problem for you.”
“You were never a problem for me.”
“Then tell me what changed our relationship since Carlos got out of prison and I barely had a minute with you.”
“Of course, and you stayed away from me.”
“And what else could I have done?”
“You are the same as Carlos.”
    “How?”
“You both think you can oblige me to feel as you want me to and that isn't good. You're very mistaken. Do you think that you can distance yourself from me and I won't have feelings about it? He thinks he can fight with me about what he did and I won't feel anything about it? But, no.”
Alejandra, the only think I want is for you to take your space and your freedom to find out what you want.”
“I don't want you to decide that for me. I never asked you to distance yourself from me and that's what you're saying, Ricardo. You know what?” She stood up, placing her napkin on the table. He tried to stop her. “No; let me go. It hurts me what you are saying. I never thought that you would hurt me, too.”
She turned to leave. He tried to call her back, but it was useless.
  • Considering their past issues, Ricardo should have never believed anything Carlos had to say about his relationship with Alejandra.
  • Leonardo walked into Roberto's office and delivered the good news about the fifty-year sentence. Roberto showed him the pathology report. It indicated that maroon-red fibers were present in her lungs. This meant she was suffocated with something red.
  • Olivia told Victoria she is still in love with Leonardo but he is no longer interested in falling in love again. Victoria said that she understood because this is how she sees it. “Happiness is about who you are, not whom you're with.” She herself had been years without a stable relationship. She said she was completely happy with friends like Roberto, Leonardo, and Ricardo. Olivia asked whether she didn't feel she was missing out on anything and Victoria told her “No.”
  • Was she telling the truth or trying to convince herself?
  • She tried to talk Olivia into going out with her and having a good time and maybe meeting someone. Olivia declined, saying she didn't want to take the risk.
  • Roberto, Leonardo, and Juan discussed next steps. They needed to look for anyone who could have had a motive for framing Carlos for this crime and speculated on whether anyone like this was a guest at the bachelor party. This also meant following up with Tatiana and that meant that Juan would have to make that happen.

  • Alejandra and Ricardo both returned to the office and closed their respective doors. She had managed to avoid crying until she sat down at her desk. He stood behind his and took a deep breath.
  • Gustavo handed a file to Fanny, telling her that signing the document would dissolve the partnership with Alberto. If one partner wants out, that's all it takes. She compared it to a divorce, then picked up the pen. She signed it and handed it back to Gustavo, who told her he would present it to the judge; she did not need to be present. She had no desire to see Alberto again. All she wanted was for him to end up in prison.
  • Roberto dropped in on Ricardo to give him the update on the murder case. No new suspects yet, though. Ricardo hoped that this could be resolved soon and explained why he felt this way. Roberto acknowledged that this was not an easy situation before launching into the idea that Ricardo should go out and meet new women. Ricardo was reluctant.
  • Gustavo and Fanny talked about her desire to see Alberto behind bars. She said that Alberto was mad, manipulative, a killer, and that he had planned the whole thing. Gustavo acknowledged that Alberto was without scruples. Roberto had fallen into his trap because he hadn't seen him for years and therefore didn't know who he had become. However, he told her that no matter what happens she needed to go on with her life. She knew that but her life had been affected very badly. They shook hands and she left the office.
  • Juan and Leonardo talked about the investigation. They were sure that Tatiana knew something about who murdered Patricia or she would not have suddenly disappeared. He had discussed this with Roberto and was determined to find her. Leonardo handed him some cash to spend in the bar as needed.
  • Alejandra was unable to concentrate on her work. Gustavo knocked, entered, and asked to talk to her. He sat in front of her and apologized for his earlier behavior, saying he had been a fool. He talked about how unfair it was when one person ended a relationship without agreement from the other. She explained that she understood more than he realized. He noted that her sympathy for Isabel's situation might come from Carlos' infidelity and that he understood that. He apologized again for his behavior and insensitivity. He cried while doing so and she tried not to cry herself.
  • Olivia was researching sperm banks online when Carmen entered to deliver some transcripts. When Olivia asked Carmen what she thought of sperm banks Carmen said that she thought it was a great thing to help couples who couldn't conceive without this. However, she thought the idea of a single woman having a baby without a father was strange and she personally felt that a baby should come from the love of its parents. Before she could say another word Olivia thanked her and said she had to get back to work. After Carmen left Olivia looked both sad and angry.
  • Gustavo apologized again and told Alejandra that he and Ricardo had talked. He said that Ricardo had told him of her integrity, her legal talent, and her good will toward everyone and that he knew that this status was not her fault. She stopped him saying more. They shook hands and he asked her to draft the settlement giving Isabel and Luis everything they needed. He was willing to comply with all Isabel's demands. He left in a calmer state than when he arrived.
  • Victoria went to Roberto's office obviously to tease him, judging by how she sat on his sofa. He seemed up for the game, preparing to try his bon mots on her. She talked about doing something on Friday, but he said he had plans for something really extreme involving the other guys on an expedition for new women. She said it was a shame because her plans had included him. He wasn't prepared for this and said he could cancel. She said no, he shouldn't cancel out on his friends, and walked out of his office with a flirtatious expression and an air kiss at the door. He felt like a fool.
  • Victoria went to Olivia's place with a bottle in hand, hoping to convince her to go out. As Olivia put ice in their glasses she explained she wasn't in the mood. They had a drink and Victoria told her she was concerned that she might be afraid to go out and meet people. “There are lots of men out there!” Olivia told her about the sperm bank only to get a shocked reaction.
  • Alejandra talked with her mother about the conversation with Ricardo, who felt that Alejandra and Ricardo should talk again. Alejandra thought that Ricardo would get back with Elena, which Paula didn't think would happen. She told her to give it time. However, Alejandra was as stubborn as Ricardo had been earlier that day, saying she had to accept this and move on.
When one examines a case – whether personal or legal – one has to find all the evidence. While the pending cases will be surely and certainly resolved, the personal issues are continued. Until we meet again Behind Mansion Walls, I'm Christopher Mason.

Thank you Urban.Hey Chris wise words

I'll say this and then go to bed.
Lack of communication is a bitch, if
Shes not used, that could cause a lot of trouble that neither party Saw coming. Because nobody knows what the other is thinking. And then doubt comes in with her friends, Assumption and guess work, and then there's the bully anger and you get what ale and rick got, anger and they're both left alone crying in their office. I think I saw a teardrop on Rick's face. And why is
She accusing him of being like carlos? This is her fault. When she opens her mouth and tells Carlos"We
Are over" he's gonna be kissin her
Mi Amorin her, holdin her hand, yeah
It's her fault.Ric can't make a move
Without her consent, and she ain't
Consenting. Ok, good night.zzzzzz

Until she opens her mouth and
Tells him "We are over" is what it should have said. Good night. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Kind of a slow boring episode.
I see Gustavo apologizing and everyone just going on about their business.

What's up with Benjamin and Olivia?

Thanks Urban ! Who is the garden gnome dude in the first picture in the red pants. I have seen him appear many times in your recaps !

Good morning, all!

Count Alacran, Christopher Mason is the host of Behind Mansion Walls, which is about murder and other crimes among the rich and shameless. The link leads to videos. Not sure how he became connected to that world because he is described as being an actor, but he is a good eccentric host of this series. I started putting him in these recaps because Alberto's mansion made me think of ones I saw in this series.

I'm waiting with baited breath for a new novela for which I can channel my favorite alter-ego, Dominick Dunne (although that writing takes much longer).

I knew that Gustavo would have to come to his senses for the sake of his son if for no other reason. This also feels like the writers are setting us up for when Benjamin is found out by his wife. BTW, did anyone else notice how much better she looked in her recent appearance than she did at little Luis' party? She can do better than Benjamin.

What I can't stand in novelas is the failure to communicate. That is particularly ironic and sad when the characters are lawyers who -- of all people -- should be able to communicate effectively.

Thanks, Urban. Terrific as always. I appreciate all the dialogue on Ric and Ale's breakup, uh, pre-breakup.

The misunderstanding between Ric and Ale is so stupendously silly. Still, I blame her more than him because everybody, including Carmen (who's probably the most observant person in that office) has seen enough to believe Ale and Carlos are still a twosome. Urban, yes it is ironic that both Brilliant Lawyers jumped to conclusions, rather than probe beyond circumstantial evidence.

Now that Gustavo has calmed down, will he get the therapy Ric suggested? I would love to see that.

So Carlos is going to try to screw over Roberto while Roberto is working with Leo to clear him, all to get back at Alonso? What an ego.

Niecie, that is something that bothered me yesterday when I was working on this. Roberto is part of the team that got Carlos out of jail and they are now working on clearing him (if the evidence points that way). It makes no logical sense that he would try to screw him over. This could backfire on him big time.

Anyone in this world can make a mistake and this storyline is a writers' screw-up. As Gustavo pointed out, Alberto was not the guy Roberto knew 20+ years ago when they were in school together. Alonso allowed him to take on the case and therefore he should not eject him from the firm because of its outcome. When a similar thing happened on L.A. Law Leland didn't fire Anne Kelsey, who became a partner some episodes later.

On to the others....

I don't see Olivia going to a sperm bank to have a baby. Hasn't she seen enough fatherless children in her career to realize that to do this deliberately could end very badly?

Victoria: Methinks the lady doth protest too much. She looks like she is covering up some really deep sadness.

BTW, does anyone else think that these characters drinking more booze than usual?

How delightful to have Christopher Mason back again with his wry observations on the differences between crime and sin.

Love that you kept including screen shots of him as he commented on the action. You are really crafting some works of art here.

And oh my, the Raining Men video! One of my favorite songs and the dancers in their briefs, raincoats and shoes were a hoot. Quite a jazzy start to my morning.

"He looked tighter than an overwound Rolex."

A perfect description of our stiff as a brick Rick. I did enjoy Alejandra's roasting of him as making decisions for her, just as Carlos was doing. He's a poor listener, constantly jumps to conclusions and really needs a course in Reflective Listening to help him truly figure things out.

However I've noticed that in all telenovelas, characters constantly interrupt each other, leap to their own conclusions or simply shut down the conversation by yelping "Calm down!" rather than letting the other person fully elucidate their feelings at the time. Guess that's necessary to keep this misunderstandings simmering until the final happy happy wedding bells ring.

Fabulous job UA. Enjoyed every bit of it.

Also, don't know if they're drinking more booze than usual, but they are certainly drinking A LOT. I never had the metabolism to handle more than a glass of wine, so I'm amazed at how some people seem to be able to consume large amounts of alcohol and still function. Would not work for me.

If Alejandra really is so upset about Ricardo and Carlos making decisions for her, then she really should stand up for herself and make her own decisions to start with. She's confusing everybody. She's to blame for the way people perceive things. No sympathy for her. Maybe Rick is protecting himself, believing that she's obviously not going to choose him over Carlos (which is basically what it looks like). Alejandra needs to man up. Her mother should have made her realize that.

Something must have happened to Victoria for her to be that way. Or maybe it was her mother, or a sister?

Olivia still being her usual pathetic self. He's not into you!

Anon1146

People interrupting each other is one of my pet peeves. Many people do it deliberately to divert trains of thought, although that doesn't apply in the case of Alejandra and Ricardo no matter what they think.

Do not miss tonight's episode. I will be working on it after breakfast.

BTW Urban, your recap was great. I wish I had creative talent to come up with something like this.

Anon1146

Thanks so much Urban, I know you put a lot of time into these recaps and doing double duty at that.

My first comment of the day: boy was Gus' rehabilitation an instantaneous turn around or what?

Ale can't stand up for herself, totally agree Anon1146. But she sure can dump her innermost feelings on her mother. Our only hope, unless we have to endure another 40 episodes of this, is for Paula to go to Ric and shake him by the toenails.

Back later.

Anon1146, ITA Victoria's mom or sister or some other relative has something to do with her attitude. My guess is she grew up seeing them be way too dependent on pleasing a man that was no good for them. Victoria wants somebody special to love like everybody else and she knows full well that Roberto is more than just a "friend" to her.

What does one wear to accompany her best friend to a robbery, abuse, and extortion trial? Victoria's plunging neckline was nuts. The wardrobe department's rule seems to be at least one women must be inappropriately dressed every night. Monday was Elena's night. Tuesday Victoria's.

To Victoria--
I read your comment from last night, but too late to answer. My heart goes out to you and your hub. I hope everything in your life has improved and you are happy. We don't mind sharing personal experiences such as yours, we ARE, of course, a caring community. It's just that we don't want the blog to become a forum for current events. It would fill the pages rapidly.

Thanks Urban. Your recap is better than what I watched.

I tuned in late for this one, but the first thing I saw was Ale and Ric "breaking up"
I'm done with them, they do not act like 2 intelligent lawyers that's for sure.
I'm equally frustrated that the writers keep using the lack of communication card to separate couples. (Well technically Ric and Ale were never a couple but still!)

I guess Altair Jarabo is the next actress to become a serial Fashion Felon and the writers have Roberto as the excuse. However, I'm not sure that any consummation of their relationship would be as satisfying as their Much Ado About Nothing exchanges.

Not to mention the question of future fidelity.

I'm going to guess that Victoria may have been used and abused herself in the past and her rejection of any future commitment is a defense mechanism. This would also account for her crusade against domestic violence.

I don't think we'll have to go 40 episodes before the issues between Ricardo and Alejandra are resolved. We should expect more shenanigans and fashion felonies from Elena, however.

I think Gustavo needed to the hear the cold harsh truth from a man. Victoria & Alejandra told Gustavo the same thing Ricardo told him but he dismissed them as being on the women's side.

What repentant cheaters need to understand is that when their partner finds out about the cheating, everything changes. The betrayed partner has to come to the harsh realization that everything about their life is a life and it's fake.

Therefore, in order to move forward they have to discover what's true. They can't depend on their cheating partner to tell them the truth, because in many cases the cheating partner doesn't even know what's true themselves.

The moment a betrayed partner finds out about the cheating, that relationship is over. If they stay together, the relationship dynamic will be different b/c the people involved now have new information about the other.

If Gustavo & Isabel stay together or get back together, Gustavo will need to accept that Isabel will never look at him with the adoration & love she looked at him with before. Isabel will have to accept that Gustavo is a weak man.

If Ricardo & Elena got back together, she's going to have to accept that he's there mainly for the children and while he may care for her & love her as the mother of the children, he will never be in love with her*. He's going to have to accept that she is a silly, vain person who needs a lot of attention and if he doesn't give her the attention, she is going to seek it elsewhere.

If Carlos & Alejandra got back together, he's going to have to accept that she won't respect him like she did before & she's going to have to accept that he is selfish & entitled.

If they can't accept these truths about their partner, they need to go their separate ways.

Benjamin & Leticia's time is coming up. I fully expect Benjamin to BEGGGGG Karina to stay. That's going to be eye opening to Leticia, who has heard how he really doesn't like Karina, he's just there for Benjamin Jr. Leticia is going to realize and know Benjamin is just a weak punk. The wild card is going to be Karina. I don't think she's going to react how Benjamin & Leticia think she's going to react.

If Oli wants to go to the sperm bank and she can support a child on her own, let her (or she can adopt). There's no sense in Oli wasting her child rearing years waiting on a man because that may never come.

Elena would never accept that Ricardo isn't stupefied by her sexual talent and appeal. She is a narcissist and everything to a narcissist is about "Me, me, ME!"

I don't see Isabel getting back together with Gustavo. Alejandra still can't deal with Carlos touching her.

Karina would stomp Benjamin into next week. With her stilettos on.

Urban, thank you for this masterpiece of a recap. You are a very talented writer and it's simply amazing how you keep coming up with original ideas and new literary styles for the recaps.

Unfortunately, the writers botched the law once again.
I was hoping that they would finally understand the function of a prosecutor, but no such luck. Yet again, a lawyer from Vega and Associates acted as a prosecutor.
Moreover, yet again a lawyer from Vega and Associates was actually the main witness in the case he prosecuted.
Leonardo discovered Olivia naked and bound after the assault, there was no case without his testimony, so of course he should have been the most important witness taking the stand in Olivia's case, after Olivia herself.

Olivia's statement was not enough and Leo should have been questioned too, and I can only imagine how ridiculous it would have looked, Leo asking himself a question, then taking the stand to answer it, then getting off the stand to ask another question and so on for hours.

And why on earth was Leonardo acting as a prosecutor if initially it was handled by Sonia the prosecutor, who is an expert in this kind of cases?

Irene

Also, all the cases should have been tried together. It was the only way to prove method of action and actually have a shot at conviction regarding earlier cases.

By the way, I don't buy 10 women all being robbed and bound and not a single one pressing charges until Olivia's tv appearance.

And the writers were terribly wrong as to the applicable law.
In Mexican law, abandono de persona is reserved to cases of people leaving children, spouses or vulnerable people for whose wellbeing they are responsible.
It has nothing to do with what was done to Olivia, so clearly the writers never looked into the actual law and just tried to guess what would apply to someone being left bound and gagged and came up with abandono de personas.

If anyone is interested, the following articles of the Codigo Penal Federal pertain to abandono de personas.

Irene

The charge of attempted homicide is also completely wrong. The correct charge would be privacion illegal de libertad, as per article 366 of the Codigo Penal Federal. Basically, what this article says is that if you deprive other of liberty with the purpose of causing him damage or in order to rob or extort him, your punishment will be 15 to 40 years in prison.

As we can see, this is exactly what happened to Olivia-she was deprived of her freedom so that a robbery could be committed. No need to try to prove that it was an attempted homicide (which it wasn't).

Irene

I wonder whether we will see Sonia again because she would have really sunk her teeth into this case. This would have made for a better trial scene.

As to no report from the other victims, this is not unusual. The conversation between Sonia and Victoria in an earlier episode mentioned an alarmingly high percentage of female crime victims not reporting it. This is probably close to the truth in a country where police are regarded as being either useless or corrupt. Factor in that many women who live alone fear reporting such crimes because of possible repercussions which could include risks to their own independence if their parents then begin badgering them to move back in with them. They don't want to go back to being treated like idiot children.

Negative publicity is another undesirable effect. Nobody wants to face a barrage of questions about this outside of a police report and a trial. We aren't seeing people being mobbed by journalists here but something like that could happen. And then what happens when you get to work or face your parents?

Urban, I totally agree with you, women often don't report crimes, for many different reasons.
However, we are talking about ten women all bound and gagged(apparently the m.o was the same in all the cases). Someone had to have found them, and at least some of the people that found a gagged and bound victim of crime would have insisted on filing a police report.
I guess I am naïve but it is hard for me to believe that at least 20 people chose to not to report a serious crime, putting other women at risk of falling victims to the same assault. I can't buy that not a single one would have gone to the police, especially considering that a crime committed was a robbery, not a sexual assault (which takes up the majority of crimes that go unreported).

It's a pity we didn't get to see the other 10 trials. It would have been interesting to see what evidence was used to convict Arturo of previously unreported crimes. In real life, it would have been extremely difficult to convict him (and even more so view the fact that Olivia revealed the m.o in her interview).

Irene

Also, Arturo's defense attorney should join Alan in the inept lawyers club. No, actually he should be the president of that club. While Alan at least made an effort to present a line of defense, Arturo's lawyer mumbled something incomprehensible about revenge motive regarding Olivia's interview and didn't even bother with closing arguments when the judge asked him if he had anything to say.

Irene

I wonder why Alonso doesn't just send out a quality manager to oversee the cases aka someone to snitch to Alonso if someone fecks it up in a case? Like with lawyers acting as prosecutors AND sometimes as witnesses at the same time.. Talk about being judge, jury and executioner. I bet Alonso would fire half the firm. Does he just tolerate this cause those screw ups bring food on the table and he is afraid to end up alone? If you look at it at a larger perspective Al is quite a crappy boss.

Or it's just that the writers haven't watched a single episode of Judy or Law And Order?

Would Olivia have reported the crime on her own, if Leonardo and Victoria didn't push her to do it? Would she have told anyone what happened, if she had freed herself without anyone's help? Olivia had a support group, but many victims don't. I think the rampant victim shaming is what causes most people not to report certain crimes, especially if they believe no one would believe them, the authority is untrustworthy or if they would be subjected to further embarrassment. Does anyone remember Maria Dolores from YNCELH? When she was told to strip for the officers (and she saw their cellphones coming out), she chose not to report the rape.

Women constantly but inadvertently put other women at risk of crimes. That's what #metoo highlights.

True. I remember that scene from YNCELH.

In the US you couldn't report a rape in the 70s because of victim-shaming and blaming. Most victims were treated worse than suspects by police and by defense attorneys in court. I don't want to think about how under-reported it must have been then.

Law & Order was shown in Mexico, BTW.

Why do some of you believe that something tragic happened to Victoria in her past to lead to her present-day attitude.???

Maybe some women just think they ddon' need a man to complete themselves and compliment their personalities.

I find the whole idea of Mexican law to be intriguing but, also unfair and unjustly also.

With their rapid-fire court hearings, how can a lawyer be confident that all the evidence has been gathered?

There is no jury of one's peers. Cases are overseen by, heard by, and sentences proclaimed by a judge. I'm sure a great deal of Mexican judges are corrupt. And once a suspect is arrested, the suspect goes straightly to prison, and for the rich, getting out with a monetary bond (fianza).

Victoria may well enjoy the single life. She certainly doesn't "need" a man. Different strokes for different folks. But Victoria has got a thing for Roberto, as evidenced by their spooning the night her friend was murdered. And the night of the party for Leo, she and Roberto each had a date but still were making jealous goo-goo eyes at each other across the room.

Urban, stellar recap. Thanks so much! I especially appreciated the line-by-line of Ale & Rick's "breakup," as I am still out of town. (But as of next Monday, back in harness for the next 3 months. I might be able to recap Fridays if I can figure out my problem accessing from home... :p)
