Por Amar Sin Ley, 5/9/18 Chapter 47 Miercoles: Lies, Fraud, and Suspicion

Chapter 47: Lies, Fraud, and Suspicion
I'm Christopher Mason. Untruths are an unfortunate reality of life. They sometimes save a life or a situation but ones intended to do otherwise usually lead to crime... including murder. In the lives of these people who live in glass houses there are whole webs of lies, fraud, and suspicion.

  • Juan and Fernanda shared a romantic moment after his mother had retired to her room.

  • The following day Juan José Durán handed Leticia an envelope with prescription information and a report from his psychologist, per her earlier request. She skimmed the report, noting that he had been diagnosed with depression caused by frustration and an inferiority complex. She planned to make the argument that this made him vulnerable to fraudulent advertising. She gave him documents to read before they go to court.

  • Carlos and Alan were on their way to the hearing to get El Ciego out of jail. Right up to the moment they were still in conflict over this client and what this would mean for their future. Both knew that they would have to face the press at some point, perhaps that day. Carlos claimed never to be mistaken and that Alan should trust him. Alan was not so sure.

  • Leticia told her client that she would first have to go to the courthouse to see if their case was viable. Señor Durán was hoping for this because he felt deceived and had paid out large sums of money for no result. Leticia told him that they would need to prove that the advertising was deceptive. Also, that she would keep him informed and that her compensation would be a percentage of any judgement won. He was satisfied with this, saying he was glad she took his case. He signed the documents and rose to leave. He grinned at Leticia as he shook her hand and continued to do so as he backed out of her office.

  • If he had only written to Dear Abby or Dear Prudence he could have saved himself the trouble. Surely they would have told him that a new wardrobe, better grooming, and better manners could be the answer to his problem.
  • Olivia entered Leticia's office with a file just as the client left. Olivia told Leticia she should have asked Alonso's opinion before taking him on as a client. Leticia resented this, angrily saying that they had always had differing opinions on cases and prodecures.

  • Nicolás told Roberto about Astrid, which amused him. There actually was a woman who could say “No” to his father! He advised his father to accept this rejection. That did not appear to be his usual way of things and he said he needed to find a new strategy. As they parted company for the day it was obvious whom Roberto learned his seductive ways from.

  • Carlos spoke to El Ciego through the bars of the holding cell, telling him not to react to anything and to leave it all to him. The court clerk called the room to order as the judge was arriving. Juge Marrufo took his place behind the desk, announced that he would hear the case of Aureliano Martínez, aka El Ciego, and looked at the accused. He politely told him to remove his glasses. When he failed to comply the first time the judge shouted this as an order. At his hesitation the judge closed his file and told him he had the choice of taking off his glasses or the case would be postponed. Carlos nodded to his client. El Ciego complied, but with an attitude. He knew that Carlos had been watching him. Carlos stood and presented his case. His client had been arrested on an assumption, without proof, and everyone had the right to a presusmption of innocence. El Ciego looked up at the proceedings. The judge watched both men.

  • This all began to sound like Al Capone being arrested for tax fraud after many failed attempts at making other charges stick. Sometimes even honest judges allow such things.

  • Astrid was reading a book at one of the garden tables when Nicolás arrived with a single perfect red rose. He presented it to her in the hope she would change her opinion of him. She was unimpressed. In fact her reaction was of such cold annoyance that he may have dug himself in deeper. She got up, saying she was going to find another place where she could read in peace. A nurse appeared in her wake and Nicolás told her that his attempt at peacemaking didn't work. He asked whether the nurse knew what Astrid liked. The nurse told him that Astrid liked classic movies and chocolates. Nicolás said that no woman had ever been able to resist him and that Astrid would not be the first. He handed the rose to the nurse and asked her to put it in water and leave it in Astrid's room.
The nurse agreed to do this, amused by his determination.

  • The prosecution called a policeman as a witness. After he was sworn in the prosecutor asked about the arrest, which was at the edge of the city. The accused was in a car that didn't have license plates. There was another person with him. The firearm was found upon inspection of the car. Carlos asked if he could ask the witness a question and the judge allowed him to. He asked in what part of the car the gun was found. He replied that it was in the trunk. The next question was whether the car was registered in the accused's name and the officer did not remember. There was no force. Carlos let the witness go and then said that the car didn't belong to his client and that his client's fingerprints were not on the gun found in the trunk. He therefore didn't know why they were there. This was an abuse of authority. The prosecutor brought up the suspicion that the accused was connected to nacotics trafficking. Carlos siad that this was not proof and that there was no proof of a link to the gun. The prosecutor said that this was the first time they had been able to arrest El Ciego. Carlos accused the prosecution of holding his client until they could charge him with something big. Both done, the judge declared a brief recess so he could review. Carlos and Alan looked at each other.

  • Ricardo was getting increasingly impatient for results. Leonardo came in to tell him that there was no news yet on whether any of the three frat boys had been arrested. He speculated that they had possibly left the country. Ricardo couldn't take this. How was he going to face Alexa and tell her that her attackers were free?

  • The judge declared El Ciego innocent and ordered his immediate release. He then adjourned the court and left. The prosecutor went up to Carlos and said “You have no idea what you just did.”
“If I have an idea, it's Justice.”
As the room cleared out Carlos walked up to the holding cell and his very happy client who said “This is the beginning of a good friendship.” and a little more in that vein.
    Alan still looked apprehensive.

  • Carlos should have had a very bad vibe from this entire proceeding, but since he has consistently failed to see that Alejandra is no longer enamored of him perhaps he had begun slipping in his professional instincts as well.

  • Ricardo's blood was boiling over this case. Leonardo told him he had to be patient about it, knowing that Ricardo hadn't had a case like this before. He was afraid of failing. He already imagining that the rapists' families wou;d hide them. Leonardo told him that whatever they do, the guilty will pay.

  • Alfredo Cervantes of La cuidad entered the courtroom and asked Carlos why he got involved with a narcotics dealer. Carlos played his own false arrest and prison cards by way of explanation, one he had made (too) many times. He is doing for others what Roberto Morelli had done for him. He was becoming a broken record.

  • Jaime visited Alejandra at her office and they talked about how she felt about working there. She told him that it was a good place to work, Alonso was a great boss, and she felt that her opinions were respected there. However, he knew that there was a reason she had called him. She told him that Carlos had sold the apartment and given her a check for half the money. She wasn't sure what to make of all this. She was hurting from everything that happened.

  • Tatiana called Juan to tell him she was ready to talk about Patricia. She invited him to come to her apartment. He agreed. She looked very happy about that.

  • Alejandra told her father that Carlos had hurt her very badly. He also had been changing since his release from the prison. She was thinking about what an effort this must be for him. Jaime understood all of this. Prison does change people and he understood her pain. However, despite Carlos taking on pro bono cases and starting a foundation for abused women and giving her space to make up her mind, she could not forgive him his infidelity. Jaime told her she should not feel bad about this because Carlos did hurt her very seriously. She was afraid of having been too hard on him but Jaime told her that maybe she was rushing this. She was the only person who could decide whether to forgive him or not. She was to be the author of her own happiness, nobody else. She had to take all the time she needed to decide. She thanked him and told him she loved him. He smiled and asked her what she wanted to do with the money.

  • Nicolás was playing the upright piano when the orderly came in. He approached him to ask for help on a new project, a new reading group. He asked for author recommendations.

  • Victoria and Ricardo talked about the case. She was incensed, saying that she would be calling the police every day for updates. She wished she could do more because of what they had done. She offered to help by talking to Alexa and getting the right therapist for her. She knew a specialist. Ricardo told her he would talk to Hugo. Victoria then said that although this was neither the time nor the place she had to talk to him about Alejandra. He said that he was keeping his distance because things had been going well between her and Carlos.

  • Carlos and El Ciego walked out together and the press was outside waiting for them. They shoved microphones at them and asked questions. Carlos took all the responsibility and talked about the inefficiency of the justice system and arrests without proof, finally emphasizing that everyone has the right to a good defense.

  • Juan arrived at Tatiana's apartment She told him that Alan had arranged the bachelor party. She had met him once before in a threesome with Patricia prior to his request to entertain at a bachelor party. When they heard that Carlos Ibarra would be the honoree they anticipated being paid very well for the evening. Since Patricia's death there hadn't been much money coming in. Juan asked what had happened. She answered that when they arrived there was quick chemistry between Patricia and Carlos so they left them alone when Alan suggested it. The other girls were all from various clubs. Since that time she had offers for similar solo jobs but turned them down. They all left on their own, leaving Carlos and Patricia together. She went to a room with Alan and later fell asleep. When she woke up she decied to see Patricia and the door to her room was open. She went inside and found her in the bed. She tried to wake her up, assumed she was passed out from too much alcohol, then felt under her nostrils and detected no air. She called for help and was told Patricia was dead.

  • On their way out of Alejandra's office they ran into Ricardo, who was happy to see his professor. Gladhanding and congratulatory comments happened when Jaime talked about Alejandra's praises of the firm and Ricardo commenting on how talented she is. They decided to visit Alonso and off they went to his office.

  • Tatiana cried as she told Juan she spoke with the police. He asked if there were any dangerous clients or enemies. She told him that all Patricia's clients liked her and she was a likeable person. She was, however, going to stop working because she was getting married.

  • The three went into Alonso's office and Jaime commented that his days are less hectic now because all he does is teach. Alonso made comments about “students today”. Ricardo and Alejandra then left them alone to catch up.

  • Juan asked about Patricia's relationship with her fiancé. Tatiana said that it was strange. They always met out on the street. He was never told what she did for a living. If she had to work she would tell him she had a previous engagement with friends or something like that. Patricia seemed afraid of something. Tatiana was never told of any violence in their relationship but the last time she saw Patricia she appeared to be having doubts that her fiancé would be able to support her in the manner to which she had become accustomed. There was no big money. She herself had never met the man in person and had only seen photos. She only knew his first name – Pedro – and that he lived in the city after having come from Acapulco, but nothing else.

  • If Tatiana was telling the truth Patricia could have been doomed because of that lie of omission. If she was not, what else was she hiding? And where were those photos?

  • Alejandra and Ricardo walked down the corridor talking about her father and Ricardo brought up the subject of their relationship. Before they could start that conversation Leonardo ran toward them with good news: One of the rapists has been arrested in Aguas Calientes. Ricardo said he would go with him to the station. Leonardo ran to get his briefcase. Aleandra went back to her office.

  • Juan entered Roberto's office and delivered the interesting information about Patricia's engagement. Roberto wasn't too quick to believe it because Tatiana had been so nervous through all this. Why would that be if she had nothing to hide? Juan looked as though he felt very foolish.

  • El Ciego and his henchman arrived at Carlos' office. After the standard Mafia greeting El Ciego sat down as his flunky put two briefcases on the desk, both filled with cash.
One was Carlos' fee and the other a gift “in the name of friendship.” It was meant to be an ofer Carlos couldn't refuse in exchange for becoming his lawyer from that day forward.
“I hope that you don't get into any other problems,” Carlos said.
El Ciego laughed, as did his flunky. He pointed at Carlos. Carlos began laughing, too. It was hard to tell what he was really thinking at that point. El Ciego talked about wanting his people to be able to work in peace and having a lawyer who can handle things well.
As he was getting ready to leave Carlos looked as though the prosecutor's question was top of mind.

  • Ricardo and Leonardo went down to the police station. One of the rapists was being brought in, already accompanied by his lawyer. Ricardo confronted him, demanding to know why he did this and telling him he will pay for his crime. The little punk just looked at him as though he were a nobody he could just step on.
When the truth is still a question mark, one always has to keep all of one's senses on alert because sometimes it is difficult to smell even the biggest rat. Aleandra and Ricardo still don't know who is lying to whom about them, Carlos lies to himself all the time and now may not recognize the truth, and the spoiled rich boys who raped poor Alexa will lie until doomsday to avoid paying for their crimes. There is more to come. Until we meet again Behind Mansion Walls, I'm Christopher Mason.

Thank you Urban, Mr. mason for you
Astute observation.You two work well
Together.

Carlos has gotten himself into a bad sour pickle situ-ation and it will cost him dearly to get out. Alive. If
He does. They now own him. Alan has good Reason to be concerned. Carlos
Sitting there lusting after that $$$
Like its a happy happy happy meal.

So.....the imfo that Juan got from
The grateful hooker isn't goin to be enough? Well from what she said to Juan Sounds like the fiance may've
Done the deed, with this crowd anyone
Could have ended her.

Ricky tries to talk to ally and she is very annoying. He need to leave her alone and just work on getting
The 3 sexcateers to trial.

Ok more tomorrow. Thanks Urban.

I would definitely consider the possibility that the fiance did the deed. Something like this doesn't stay secret forever, especially these days. Did someone photograph her with a client and put it on social media within the two weeks prior?

Alan is still a suspect.

Based on his behavior in this episode, Ricardo is now obsessed with seeing to it that the three rapists are appropriately dealt with. His concern about them being hidden by their parents is valid. The facial expression of the one who got caught says that he doesn't think he did anything wrong. Look at the lawyer he was with; the parents are already getting involved.

More later.

Now I'm worried about the Judge that will hear Aliza's rape case. He is the same one who set El Ciego free. I'd lock him up just because of his ugly and creepy looks.

At first I thought Alan killed Patricia because he is so jealous of Carlos, but now I'm not sure. What do you guys think.?

If Carlos was telling Leonardo the truth, Alan envied him. He would definitely have resented his mother giving Carlos the seed money for the firm. That's a very logical motive. Based on what we've seen of Alan in a courtroom he definitely isn't good at his profession. He must have been academically lazy as well.

Too bad. If you don't walk the walk, you can't talk the talk. And lawyers get paid for talking.

If Tatiana is telling the truth it is possible that "Pedro" would have motive to kill Patricia. It would then be an interesting coincidence that by doing so he put Carlos in the hotseat.

None of this rules out the possibility that Carlos did the crime. He thinks he is smarter than anyone else but the Peter Principle could now be at work.

I don't think Alan killed Patricia, he's too dull and unintelligent for all that. But they say don't judge the book by Its cover so let's wait and see although I'm betting my cards on Patricia's boyfriend.

Urban

How right you are in saying that Carlos thinks he is better/smarter than everyone else.
Alan just has a couple of screws loose.

I dislike Carlos so much that I really hope he is found guilty of killing Patricia, especially if Juan outs him!

I can already imagine Ale falling for Carlos' BS about how everyone deserves a "second chance " when she finds out about him getting El ciego out of jail.

Nina: Carlos will not be able to get out of this one. I agree with you, they now officially own him & he's their slave.

Ava: Gave up on Ale long time ago!

Urban, what a fantastic recap. Again, you managed to find a unifying thread that runs through the episode. Thank you for this amazing storytelling and marvelous screen grabs (I especially enjoyed the one of Leticia's client, it captured his creepiness so well).

I am probably the only one, but I hate Olivia more than any other female character in this telenovela. I just can't stand her hypocrisy and her fake righteous indignation. If this case is a losing cause, why didn't she say so to the client when he was in her office, or at least told him that there are some things that they have to check and to come back later and they will give you a definitive reply whether they can take him on as a client? She was the one to ask him to provide supporting documents for the lawsuit, so why the hell is she so indignant now and wants to go to Alonso?

And i simply can't stomach her repeating like a parrot how horrible it is that Leticia wants to get money from the deodorant company.

Girl, we are talking about huge company that made millions by falsely advertising those deodorants as having a magic power to make creepy losers into prince charmings. Why is it so horrible to get some money from them if they falsely advertised their product? It's not like she is suing a monastery or an orphanage.

I don't think Leticia did anything wrong here. The lawsuit is not frivolous- the deodorant company claims that the product contains pheromones and that's why the product is supposed to make it's user more attractive, and since this is not the case then it is not farfetched to claim that this is false advertising.
I doubt they included a disclaimer because Olivia didn't mention it neither to Victoria nor to Leticia.
So we have a case that is maybe strange and unusual, but not without merit.

We have a client that thinks that he suffered prejudice due to the false advertising and wants to proceed with the case, knowing full well that he might lose. (Leticia doesn't promise him a win. She says that she will have to submit it to the court for evaluation-legally such a procedure doesn't exists, but the idea is that the client is aware that the case might not proceed.)

And we have a lawyer that wants to do what lawyers are supposed to be doing, and it's help a client and earn good money in the process.

Nobody is being deceived, the client is either going to win and pay Leticia with a percentage of the win or lose and pay nothing at all (that's the advantage of a contingency fee).

If Leticia manages to win the case, Vega and Associates are going to finally have some money entering their coffers after all those pro bono cases and cases involving one of the lawyer's acquaintances/friends/spouses that Vega and associates can't charge.

If not, then the only thing that is going to be lost is Leticia's time and efforts, but since she has no other case to dedicate her time and efforts to, I think Vega and Associates will not be too damaged by it. After all, Vega is paying 3 receptionists to look at shoes all day long and employs two thirds of his lawyers doing police work on a unpaying case.

Irene

Irene you're not alone, I can't stand Olivia too. I never liked her from the begging, her desperation was enough to put me off

Ava, i also don't think Alan killed Patricia. First of all, it would be too obvious and unoriginal.
But also, Alan is not a good lawyer and he knows it. Deep down, he must understand that with him at the helm of the law firm, it would go bankrupt pretty quickly.
He doesn't like the fact that Carlos is better than him, and resents him for being his mother's favorite, but i doubt he would shoot himself in the leg by eliminating Carlos.

Irene

The person that dresses Alejandra must really hate her. I never saw more horrible atrocity than this black and white flowery lace jacket with neon pink hem.
I think I saw something similar on one of the senior citizens from Nicholas' assisted living facility (the one barely walking in the background).

Irene

I dislike Olivia too. She looks retarded all the time, and she's the most annoyingly desperate character ever. I also feel she's being a hypocrite too, to be all up on her high horse over Leticia's money grab lawsuit. If Olivia wasn't about the money, she would be getting so much more done for her cause by working at a nonprofit organization, rather than one of the top law firms in the country.

I sympathize more with Leticia. She has flaws, but they're very real and there are plenty of people out there like her. She's also very determined and focused. I hope they find a way to redeem her, but not as a goody two shoes.

I don't think Carlos killed Patricia. I don't really see a motive there, and he was out and about like nothing after the death. If he did do it, he must have been on some real drugs.

Great resumé and screen caps as always, Urban, and you're having so much fun with your Christopher Mason persona...and so are we! Just a treat.

"If he had only written to Dear Abby or Dear Prudence he could have saved himself the trouble. Surely they would have told him that a new wardrobe, better grooming, and better manners could be the answer to his problem."

I'm with "Christopher" on this. And if I were really being mean, I'd say his inferiority complex was well-deserved. Very much an off-putting character. Ugh. Leticia can have him.

Olivia, the character, is a wet noodle, I agree Irene and Anon1146. But I've always admired the actress' calf muscles. Check 'em out the next time she exits a room. She looks more like an aerobics instructor than a lawyer.

And Irene, I too have been thinking that the folks in the wardrobe department don't like Alejandra. Almost everything they put on her is a horror. Victoria now is always tastefully dressed, and Leticia's outfits, while alarmingly skin tight, are usually attractive as well. So no reason that Alejandra should look like such a disaster. Unless.....

Urban, this was great. The opening and closing paragraphs are always wry and wonderful, the middle informative and often funny. In short, well crafted from beginning to end.

Ana Brenda Contreras always has long hair because her ears stick out, and she thinks that having long hair will help hide them. Years ago I knew someone whose daughter had the same problem. She was so vain that she made her teenage daughter have cosmetic surgery to pin her ears to her head.

Thanks, Judy. Somebody said this week that Christopher Mason would make a very entertaining dinner guest and I totally agree! If I could get on the holodeck of STNG I'd want to host that party. The guest list would also include Dominick Dunne, Oscar Wilde, George Bernard Shaw, Dorothy Parker, Edith Wharton, Anne Rice, William Shakespeare, and Tennessee Williams. Now, that's a party that could go on for days.

There has to be a better hairstyle for Ana Brenda than this.

Olivia's desperation is the least attractive thing about her. As to her criticism of Leticia's greed, well.... could it be that Leticia has the same attitude about pro bono cases as Benjamin? I suspect she does although she's smart to not be obvious about it. She will make senior lawyer long before he ever becomes a partner.

Actually, something tells me that something about Benjamin's under-the-table client is going to blow up in his face and him out the door of V&A.

Thanks, Urban! Mistressful as usual.

JudyB, the wardrobe department may not like Alejandra, but they REALLY hate poor Isa. She looked like she went to the divorce-signing party directly from a class at Sad Clown College.

I'm pretty sure Leticia also scoffs at the pro bono cases, but it is her opinion and there's nothing wrong with that. A lot of people get into law to make money and have no interest in charity work. There's something for everybody there. I don't see why Olivia should judge Leticia harshly for that, or why it even affects her so much to begin with. When she confronted Leticia about going to Alonso, Olivia came off as a tattletale, rather than being concerned about the client, the case or even the firm.

As for Benjamin, the worst way in which it can blow up in his face would be if someone from Vega is representing the party suing his client, and they meet face to face in court. It would be embarrassing all around, including for the firm.

Are Alejandra's ears really that weird to look at? I don't see anything wrong with them.

Anon1146

In LQNPA she often ha her hair pulled back and her ears did stick out. Not to mention that this did nothing for her face. She needs more fullness and some height.

Another wardrobe thing is Carlos not wearing white shirts. That suit and shirt combo last night was out of a 1970s nightmare compared to the traditional greys and blues on the Vega men's suits and their white and (very) pale blue shirts.

No, I think she keeps her hair that way all the time because she's the face of Pantene Mexico? And her hair always has to look gloriously thick and long? Well that's my guess because I've never seen her ears sticking out even with her hair in a ponytail.

I also don't think Leticia is doing anything wrong with taking that case to court. Olivia needs to take several seats and let Leticia do her own thing whether she succeeds Or fails.

The wardrobe planners are doing a great injustice to these actors.
While I love the originality of Roberto's wide lapels and plaids (which I bet Jose María Torre Hütt designed himself), the monochromatic suits/ties/shirts of Carlos, and others, remind me of Regis Philbin and the late 1990s. Then of course, we have Gustavo's flaming neon colors, Ricardo's absurd neckties, Alonso's perfectly coordinated shirts/ties/handkerchiefs.

I never saw a man who could tie a necktie as gorgeous as Fernando Colunga did in Mañana es Para Siempre. I spent hours trying to Google on how to replicate this absolutely beautiful way of tying a necktie so my husband could learn a "new" look.

Urban and Christopher--delighted to have you both on last night's episode. I didn't get half as much out of it you two did. You made it much more enjoyable. Thank you. I was a bit bored by Jaime's talk with Ale, Ric's over the top reaction to losing track of the three escapees and Nicolas' desire to have a poetry book chosen for him to work his magic on Astrid.

One thing that captured my attention was El Ciego and his two tell-tale metal suitcases full of cash. Carlos' eyes were salivating! El Ciego is putting the squeeze on Carlos, while Carlos tells him he'll only get him out of scrapes that are "doable," El Ciego is laughing it off saying he's not the one who will be getting into trouble. He just wants his "gente" to be able to work in peace. Since Carlos is already dressed up as a mafia/cartel enforcer, it's only one side-step to the dark side. I wonder if he'll start carrying a gun in his trunk now. Carlos is not really looking ahead as to how his new client will affect his trying to get Ale back.

Anon@11:50 - It's not just ABC with the long hair to cover up ears--all these glamorous actresses in tns are usually "dressed" in long hair and hair extensions. Currently on the scene are also Victoria and Olivia, Isabel, Elena, Leticia, and even Tatiana. And, if anyone needs to let her hair down it's Sonia, the pony-tailed prosecutor.

This may become important later, but in Juan's "deposing" of Tatiana, she said that when she woke up the next morning, Alan was GONE. Hmmm. Also, when he was relating his interview with her to Rob, he wanted her brought in for questioning. That's about when Juan said she would probably be very reluctant to do it and would be very nervous, whereupon Rob said, if she's innocent, there wouldn't be any need for her to be nervous. Juan defended her staunchly.

Yeah, where are those photographs? Has anyone done a CSI of Pat's apartment?

Leticia's case can go in one of three directions:

1. Dismissed as frivolous is she can't prove intent to deceive
2. Settlement offer big enough for the client to accept.
3. Trial ending in a big judgement with or without an appeal. Headlines for a big judgement might look good for the firm. However, an appeal can drag on.

Anita, since Tatiana is actually a suspect herself in this investigation, she should have been interrogated by the police, certainly not "deposed" by Juan. Whatever she says to Juan is worth squat and he is even interfering with a police investigation and obstructing justice by hiding all this information from the police.

Urban, I think proving intent to deceive will be less complicated than proving that a reasonable consumer would have been misled by the advertisement.
The deodorant company claims that the deodorants are made from pheromones and that's what makes the user irresistible to women to sell their product, when clearly it is not true. I would say that Leticia might actually prove that there was an intent to deceive.
However, proving that a reasonable consumer would have been misled by an advertisement claiming to make him irresistible, that's another story altogether.

But in any case, the lawsuit is not completely without merit, so it should not be dismissed as frivolous.

I would love to see this case unfold in court! There are so many things that can be argued by both sides, and it should be entertaining to watch, especially if the lawsuit is going to be certified as a class action. It would be really funny to watch testimonies of various losers as to how their lives were ruined because the product didn't deliver what it promised.

Irene

I have to say that the ability to sell any product like that proves that there is a sucker born every minute. i also think that any pheromones in such a product wouldn't be enough to overcome that client's creepiness.

I agree; I hope we see that case play out.

Totally agree with you Urban,"any pheromones in such a product wouldn't be enough to overcome that client's creepiness". But how fun would it be to hear the lawyers for the company argue exactly that, with plaintiffs of all sorts of creepiness/geekiness/social inadequacy vociferously objecting.

Irene

Urban, couldn't Leti's case end in 4) favorable judgment, minimal monetary award? I have seen cases in which the plaintiff was awarded $1 -- the apparent message being, yeah, you're right, but who cares?

In truth, I have no idea how this goes in Mexico and I have never sat on a jury for anything like it here. On the two occasions I was voir dired for civil cases they ended in settlements.

That kind of a judgement is probably what that client really deserves.

Blue Lass, it's called nominal damages. They are awarded when the plaintiff was wronged, but didn't suffer any financial loss to show that he is in the right and that he would be entitled to actual damages if any existed.
They are also awarded in cases involving constitutional or civil rights, such as violation of freedom of speech, for example.
Most often, it's the plaintiff himself that asks to be awarded 1$ in damages to make a point that his lawsuit is not about the money but about justice being served.
For example, Taylor Swift was recently awarded 1$ in a lawsuit against the pervert that groped her.
Her attorney called this single dollar in damages “a single symbolic dollar, the value of which is immeasurable to all women in this situation".

In the case of our creep, though, it's all or nothing, because he did suffer financial loss (all those useless deodorants that he bought, the costly psychological treatment etc..) and he is not requesting a single dollar as a symbol to his commitment to justice, so he either wins the case and gets compensated (although maybe not as much as he would like to) or loses and gets nothing but hurt ego and shame.

Irene

I hate to say this, and I won't have more details until next week-ish, but Univision is planning a second season of Por Amar Sin Ley. I hope that doesn't completely screw up how they're ending this season for you.

Oh, Kat, say it isn't true. I for one am getting tired of all the cases and I have a feeling Irene won't be all that keen on analyzing all the gross errors Televisa is making with the law for a whole 'nother 80+ episodes in a 2d season.

Is it really such a blockbuster down South of the Border?

Válgame Dios! I guess we have to start ordering superstrenght beanies now. Maybe we can get a group discount and a complimentary t-shirt with " I kind of survived two seasons of PASL" on a background of bricks.

Irene

Thanks, Urban. Terrific job and I love the screenshots.

Everybody, check your local listings. Mine are showing PASL will air on the East Coast at 10:30 and for only a half hour, after tonight's soccer game.

5ft, thanks for the info about a second PASL season. I can see them doing this TN like Law & Order where they bring in new regular players almost every season. If it's doing well enough for a second season, I hope they spend a little dough on a legal consultant.

Now that I see how (understandably) nervous Alan is about getting in bed with the mob, I agree he didn't kill Patricia. Here's my crackpot theory. El Ciego had Carlos set up so he could come to jail and be menaced into becoming his lawyer. Whoever set up Carlos has reach because the cops moved with lightning speed to get him at the wedding altar. They wouldn't even wait for Ale's "I do."

Niecie--I love your Crock-Pot theory.

But wait...we don't know yet why Alan started moving firm funds from the account to his personal account. Could he have paid someone? He still has visions of grandeur--to displace Carlos (or at least separate him from his cash). It's interesting that neither Carlos nor Alan have mentioned this (or did they while I was making coffee). We do know that Alan was nervous about CARLOS moving money from the firm's account to his personal account. Not that it matters now. They are awash in dirty money--it probably needs to be laundered--rapidito.

Oh, and I so want him to be guilty!!

Urban, what is the "peter principle"?

"How funny would it be to watch the testimonies of various losers as to how their lives were ruined when the product didn't do what it promised".
Well at least they didn't stink. They just couldn't get a date. And if some-
one isn't interested in you, your roll-
On is not gonna make that happen. And
I would not waste good money on such a product. What do they do? stand with their arm up while they talk to the fairer sex hope she will start to move
Towards them uncontrollably? That'd be
Worth a laugh. I don't think I'd survive another season of this. And
What the hell were they thinkin lettin
Isabel out of the house in that miss
Matched costume? I liked the top with
The striped design, but the pants, No!
Looked like whatever her hands landed on in her closet she'd wear that day.

Seemed like I remember seeing Anna's
Ears and I thought they were unusually big. She should probably keep the hair down.
