Por Amar Sin Ley, 6/1/18 Chapter 63: Love in a Time of Cholera Morbus*
*Cholera Morbus = A gastrointestinal disturbance characterized by griping……[Courtesy of Webster’s Ninth New Collegiate Dictionary. There’s more, but it’s irrelevant for my purposes.]
What does Love have to do with IT?
Carlos loves money. He says he loves Ale, for whatever reason benefits him most.
Fer isn't in love with Mi Johnnie anymore even though she promised not to be one of those jealous girlfriends.
Oli is on the edge of falling in love with a man who presents himself as a decent, though deadly dull, caballero.
Alan is already in love and ready to settle down, hopefully with Oli. Or is it a smoke screen hiding an evil (or hapless) alter ego?
Leo is "professionally" jealous of Alan's attentions for reasons his colleagues find credible but counsel him not to share them with Oli.
Victoria is in denial she's already in love with Roberto but won't take the next step with Vega's resident Lothario. Flirting is sufficient to keep him within range.
Roberto loves Victoria and is chomping at the bit to make love to her.
Leti and Benji are still in lust. (Ooops they just got caught again by Carmencita.)
Ale and Ric the Bric-a-Brac must pretend they're not in love for the children's sake.
Elena loves to hurt Ric and her children.
Elena loves her tequila.
Ric hates Carlos (and Elena).
(Some scenes combined to make more sense)
After a couple of minutes of rewind, Elena comes into view, wearing a set of bargain basement green and white scarves stitched onto a plain gauzy dark back. She is continuing her conversation with Carlos. She natters on regarding her goal of not letting Ric see her children and her ever again (which translated means only until Ric and Ale break up and he comes crawling back to be near HER children and hence back in presence as well). She’s worried about the stay Ric has filed, but Carlos soothes her by telling her she’s not at fault, they are HER children and there’s nothing Ric can do about it. She’s to leave it in his hands and not to worry her pretty little head about anything regarding Ric.
In the Dominguez v. Dominguez issue, all are waiting in the courtroom for the judge to render his decision. The judge awards Plutarco, padre, the sum of 25,000 pesos ($1,262.50) monthly and Alvaro, hijo, is to guarantee it with a deposit of 10,000 pesos (about $500) by the end of the week—or else. Alvaro jumps up –No, no, this is an abuse, an injustice. The judge silences him. Victoria hugs Plutarco for the win, but he claims there’s not enough money in the world to be able to regain his son. Alvaro gets huffy and lets his poor (as in pesos) father know in no uncertain terms what he thinks of him--no dignity. Roberto steps in between Alvaro and Victoria. Alvaro’s attorney hustles him out, declaring they will appeal. Rob has Vic’s undivided attention for a couple of seconds as he tells her how much he admires her and how she’s the only one for him. Vic gives him a long, sultry look meant to keep him very much interested.
Nicolas suggests they go out to dine and celebrate the victory. By the look on Plutarco’s face, that’s the last thing he wants to do. Nic assures him that sooner or later his son will come around. Pluto hopes it won't be too late. The rest of the upbeat peanut gallery persuade him and they go off. At the restaurant, they toast to righteous victory. Pluto still feels so alone. Astrid suggests he come live at their retirement home. Pluto figures that if he can rent out the apartment he's living in and with his son's monthly stipend, he could swing it. Meanwhile Nick keeps plugging away at how perfect Vic and Rob are for each other. Rob is actually embarrassed. Vic admits she would consider Rob if he weren't such a womanizer. Rob claims he just couldn't wait around until the day Vic realizes he's the one for her. Nic says he taught Rob to love and respect women, to which Vic says, true, he does that too well and that's why they remain--good friends. Pluto recommends not waiting. Life is short.
Juan has successfully arranged for a big plains-clothed policeman to guard Tatiana 24/7. However, Juan asks her--if she sees or hears anything wonky, to call the police first and then him. Tatiana learns he has a novia. She tells Juan about her little exchange with Fer the day before. Tat realizes her goof and begs his pardon. She hadn't meant it to imply she spent the night--with him. Juan says it's not her fault and he'll go find Fer and talk to her.
Elena has picked up the kids from school. She's scolding Nati because she got detention. Fede looks on. When Nati talks back to Elena and states that she wants to talk to her father, Fede steps in with his reverse 13-year-old wisdom and tells Nati to quit arguing with their mother. Their dad has a girlfriend now, so forget about him (as if having a girlfriend trumps children). Nati talks back to Fede--their dad promised to tell her when he had a new girlfriend. Fede tells her he already has one and has forgotten them. Nati argues that it's just not true. She keeps insisting on talking to her father, over Elena's objections, and declares she won't pay attention to Elena until she does. She stomps off to her all-in-pink and white bedroom (so we know she's a girl) to sulk. Nope, Nati's a clever girl. She has a phone in hand and Ric's office phone number and calls him. What Ric thought was going to be a great conversation gets difficult right away about who stopped loving whom and when and is Ale his girlfriend and why didn't he keep his promise? Ric says he was about to tell them. So, Nati says, come and see them. She misses him. Ric tells her he can't because Elena has to give permission. And, if she won't, Nati asks, does that mean she'll never see him again? Ric says that at least not for now, but he needs a little time to fix things. At this tender moment, the green-scarved monster enters and takes the phone away from Nati when Nati says she was talking to her dad. Ric hears Elena tell Nati that it's Ric who doesn't want to see them. Then she rewinds her broken record that contact with the children hurts them. She threatens to call the police if he contacts them again.
Elena proceeds to give Nati a pile of bull droppings about how this is for her own good. See how she's reacting when she talks to him. Nat disputes this. Her dad told her he couldn't see them because Elena won't give permission, to which Elena claims he's lying to get Nati to forgive him. Her dad has a girlfriend and no longer has time for them. (This is going nowhere.) Elena finally tells her she's prohibited from contacting or talking to Ric by phone and if she does, she's in big trouble with mama. Then she signs Fede on as a spy for her. Fede wants to stay on Elena's good side, so he agrees.
Carlos gets a visit from Benji. He thanks Carlos for the hint on where to find Marrufo's pay off. Alonso was very pleased. Carlos informs him that there is more money to be laundered--lots of it. The matter is to have his full attention, over anything Alonso and Vega ask. Of course, Carlos is looking to keep his skin and soul intact.
Juan catches up with Fer near the house. He tries to explain what surely was going through her mind. Fer performs a very public sidewalk break-up (but with no one around, it's pretty private anyway). Since he cares more about his "supposed" friend, who claims to be a victim but could also be a suspect and certainly doesn't have innocent intentions where Juan is concerned, she's done with him. (Juan is the innocent naïve manchild here.) Fer says they will never see things the same way. She marches off. He runs after her, but she's a gone girl.
Leti wants a new car. Benji is disposed to make her dream come true as the money comes rolling in and as long as he can continue rolling her in the hay. They begin right away, not aware that Carmencita is approaching the office door. As she enters, a roll in the office hay hastily becomes a piece of hay stuck in Leti's eye.
Carmen hands Benji a folder of financial stuff to review, having to do with Alonso's new case of a corrupt municipal president in San Benito. Benji says he'll get to it in due time. As Carmencita leaves he asks her to shut the door she neglects to knock on before entering. Leti and Benji take up where they left off.
Ric goes to see Leo for comfort after the Nati-Elena debacle. He's beside himself. Leo points out Elena is just doing it to provoke him. Ric says he's ok, but he's off to check the restraining order. Leo offers to go with him. Ric says thanks, but he'll go alone and off he goes.
Two of the three younger Miceketeers are in Vicky's office discussing her win for Plutarco. Alan knocks and is admitted. He's there to take Oli to lunch and, er, Vic, too, if she'd like to join them. Vic declines, already lunched with a wink/wink. Off they go, just as Leo comes to Vic's office door, in time to bump into Oli and Alan. Vic knows she's in for an interrogation. Leo is appalled and distressed that Oli is dating a murder suspect. This is the first Vic has heard he's a suspect. Well, they were keeping it quiet and hadn't known it themselves until Carlos' tribunal. They've been trying ever since to unmask Alan. Vic agrees that Oli's dating Alan is a bad idea, but given Oli's just now entertaining seeing other men, she's not the one who wants to give Oli that particular bit of news.
Ric is at the court clerk's office. He learns the restraining order was being handled by Carlos (his now arch enemy), who apparently represents his ex-wife. He muses that they are trying to keep him away from his children, but they don't know what he's capable of. Rick notes out loud that Carlos should have contacted him before filing the order to reach an agreement, but he didn't. He went straight to court. Now he's sure Carlos is only doing this to hurt him. The clerk begs him not to stoop to their level.
Said Carlos, meanwhile, has shown up at Ale's office door and enters in order to slobber all over her, when all it would have taken is a phone call (no slobber). He needs her help, right now, with a delicate matter involving the mother/daughter/boyfriend case he has. He brings her up-to-date on the love triangle he himself learned of recently. Earnestly, he says he needs her. She's willing to help. Carlos would like her to review the case notes, in case he missed anything and to avoid any more surprises. He hates being lied to and kept in the dark relating to important points in a case. He adds that the opposing attorney is pushing all his buttons. He asserts that he wins by being a whirlwind in the courtroom. He asks Ale to lunch with him so they can talk about it and whatever had been on her mind earlier (letting him know she was with Ric). She declines the invitation and says whatever it was earlier is moot now. He calls her "Mi Amor" and quickly apologizes (hand held; hand decisively withdrawn). Finally, she's worn down with her last excuse of lots of work and agrees. Off they go.
Gus gets a new client (which at first tugged at your court reporter's heartstrings). The well-dressed gentleman informs Gus he just learned his wife is freshly pregnant but wants an abortion. Gus asks why. Well, says the husband, motherhood was never in her plans, while he, on the other hand, is ready to become a father. He's incensed by her intransigence, which left him no option but to seek legal help to prevent her from going through with the procedure. It's his child! Gus explains to him why he has no option at all during the first three months. The law is very clear. Husband protests that since they are married, there has to be a way to protect his child. Gus patiently explains that it doesn't happen until the child is born. Husband protests again that of course, had she gotten pregnant without his consent, he would have agreed to terminate the pregnancy. Gus tells him that in either case, it doesn't matter.
Poor guy is getting more and more agitated as he tearfully explains that though she'd be the mother (against her will), he'd always wanted a child and now that he could have one, she wants to end the possibility. [Ok, here's where your court reporter gets off his train. If he knew she never wanted children and he did want them, there's something called --don't marry her. If you wanted kids, marry someone who did. It's almost impossible to "change" someone's mind on this score. It would be interesting to know what her reasons were that kept her from wanting children. They may have been valid. Court reporter feels for you, Bud, but you can't have it that way.]
Bud wants Gus to find a loophole in the law, anything to keep her from aborting the fetus. Gus sadly tells him again, the law is the law. Bud doesn't understand why, if he's married he can't make decisions within the marriage. Gus reminds him that (in Mexico) marriage is a civil contract and his partner is not his property. Gus can only recommend that Bud talk to his wife again to try to convince her. Bud doesn't think it will be worthwhile. She isn't going to listen. (The accompanying music swells to indicate the sad uselessness of the proposition. So long, Bud. Gus is left to contemplate what will be will be.)
Rob and Juan are working out of Rob's office. (What else is new--'cmon Alonso, we've asked you before, get this hardworking guy his own office--or at least a cubicle where he can display his new leather briefcase and a photo of his sainted mother.) Rob finally detects that something is wrong with Mi Johnnie. When Juan shares his predicament with Fer, Rob says flowers and chocolates won't work at this stage of their relationship. He can't counsel him on this because what Juan's predicament is, is falling in love impulsively. Rob doesn't fall in love. Juan says it wasn't impulsively. Rob uses the example of their most recent case, Giselle and the trunkful of junk. (Giselle would do anything for her man.) Juan says it's not the same with him. Rob says it is. Whoever becomes enamored like that isn't thinking ahead far enough. He advises Juan to stop and decide how important this chick is to him.
Leo walks in on Rob and Juan. He's still upset over Oli and Alan stepping out. The two others didn't know that factoid. However, they do not support Leo's runtelldat to Oli. Leo feels he must protect her, after what she went through and he bearing witness to her misfortune. Juan and Rob can't hold him back.
At the restaurant, Alan likes what Olivia ordered for him. He's very happy to be with her. He feels as though he's known her for a long time. Oli came along at the right moment in his life. It was all very dark and depressing, what happened at Carlos' wedding fracaso and everything that followed. [All this time your court reporter was waiting for Ale and Carlos to walk in, see each other, greet each other and soon Vic, Leo, Rob and Ric would know about it. Nope, didn't happen.]
Alan goes on and on about the ideal girl, settling down, having a family. Oli's ears prick up and she is all ears. Oli shares that she's dreamed about starting a family for a long time, but love went seriously wrong for her. Alan says things could change, as he takes her hand. She leaves it there as she says she's much more cautious now. Alan agrees that's wise. Then he presses his case, telling her he likes her--they have so much in common. She agrees. But even though she'd like to see him more often, she still wants things to proceed slowly. He's ok with that. All's well that Ends (or Begins) Well.
Elena continues to make herself ever more miserable by looking at a photo of happier days with Ric and the two kids. She's also sloshing down another tequila. She only stops when Fede checks in on her. He tells her she looks sad. No, not really. She has him and his sister and they'll never leave her, right? She doesn't explain why Nati is behaving the way she is. Elena merely washes, rinses and repeats her now quite bleached mantra of doing everything for their own good. She then anoints him as man of the house (except she still gets to tell him what to do and when). (Apologies, your court reporter got ahead of herself--wishing she didn't have to record this scene because it is here where Elena engages her man of the house to spy on his sister for her. And, he's never to forget that Ric is not their father. Ugh.)
Leo is really desperate now regarding Oli's whereabouts and tardiness. He bursts in on Vic, imagining the worst (that maybe they bedded down for a siesta after lunch). Vic hasn't heard from Oli, but she's sure she's ok. Alan has been a real gentleman. Frustrated, Leo says that doesn't mean he couldn't commit homicide. Vic is horrified. Well, Leo backs off a bit, he doesn't have proof that Alan is innocent or not. Vic continues to divert him away from his overactive imagination. In an hour, if they haven't heard from Oli or seen her, Vic promises to go looking for her with Leo. She tells him to be patient. Leo's parting words are, very well, but Alan could have murdered Patricia.
A very pissed off Ric barges into Carlos' office where he finds only his secretary. She doesn't know when he will return. Ric has a message. Let Carlos know Ricardo Bustamante was here to see him and he should call. It's urgent.
Carlos is entertaining Ale in a different restaurant. She's enjoying the light banter of recalling their days together. This only encourages Carlos. They toast to each other, even though she reminds him he ruined their good life in one single night. She goes on to tell him that she "had" a relationship with Ricardo. We see the look on Carlos' face, but can't quite read it. Thus endeth the recap for last night.

I think Carlos is in love with winning and part of that is the status Ale brings being the daughter of a distinguished, very well-connected law professor and, of course, Ale is a classy chick in her own right. To their credit, Ale and Ric have an understanding of love as looking out for one another's best interest, not just your own. I like Roberto but he doesn't get that yet. By continuing to shag his bar babes, he's showing Victoria he's not willing (yet) to self-sacrifice to benefit her. And as Irene well pointed out, Gus showing love for Isabel - after a full year of cheating and lying and sexvideoing - by displaying he remembers her favorite wine and noodle dish is ridiculous.
Elena forgot the most sage advice I ever heard for parents: Be kind to your children; they pick out your nursing home. Humberto of PyP didn't learn that lesson when he should have.
I was cringing when she caught Natalia talking to Ricardo. I'm still trying to figure out how she flipped Fede from the feisty kid at Luis' birthday party to the brainwashed slave he is now.
Not surprised at the outcome of Dominguez vs. Dominguez. Victoria was well-prepared and the son is clearly a jerk.
"Vic gives him a long, sultry look meant to keep him very much interested."
Even though Roberto is the Pursuer, and Victoria the Pursued, I think she's definitely weakening, whereas he has changed nothing about his modus vivendi. In real life, that would not bode well. We'll see how the writers handle this. But the difference in their self-protection strategy is interesting--she settles for no one, he settles for everyone.
"Carlos is looking to keep his skin and soul intact." Nice taut description of our anti-hero's dilemma. With el Ciego, it's just a matter of time. Even deadly dull Alonso could see that.
Only thing I'm enjoying about this at the moment is watching Leonardo come unglued now that Olivia has a serious would-be novio.
And our good group of course!
Thanks Anita. Looking forward to the rest.
Fede steps in with his reverse 13-year-old wisdom
the green-scarved monster enters and takes the phone away
as long as he can continue rolling her in the hay.
Carmen, you should knock for your own good. Safeguard your eyes, woman.
Letti was kinda nasty to Carmy, but I
Think she knows letty's a skank so she
Pretty much ignores the office hooker and Her John. I want to see the both of them get their anvils. I dont like em.
Now I don't speak Spanish but I was watching a scene when rick went to this office it seems to find who loony lena's lawyer is,and he found out it's carlos Ibarra. I think I'm describing it right, did anyone else see anything something like that. And he was then figuring some things out and then they switched The scene to Carlos and ally at lunch? Or was it dinner? Don't matter, and he's back to grabbing her hand again. Oboy make it stop.
I like the way Mattie is stand up to her lying moma. I thought she would be
The one siding with her but it seems her 13 year old brother is. What's up with that? 13 year olds rebell, what's
What's up with him?Is he a moma's boy?
Rick get your children away from that loon. He might have to do some extra fighting for ally shes eating with the
Enemy.
Glad Pluto won his case, but his heart
Is broken cuz his son is a king sized jackass. Good the judge added another $5000.00 on to it.
Thank you Anita.
Really drawn away to another roaster
Whose crowin turns her on, Leo is like
A Jealous raving loonytic, lol. Vicky smiled at him. She knows he's jealous.
He may have to rescue her. I hope he don't Catch a bullet in the process.
Yes, what you saw with Ric is in Part 2. Have at it.

He calls her "Mi Amor" and quickly apologizes (hand held; hand decisively withdrawn).
And I too felt very conflicted hearing the sad tale of the husband who wanted children and the wife who did not. I did know a couple in a similar circumstance: She had one abortion when they were just living together; and another after they were married. No way was she going to have a child. He was open to having children and rather envied us when our first baby was born. However, he was not vehemently pro-child; just somewhat wistful. But I can't imagine wanting a child and seeing one's partner determined to dispose of it.
Now, for my Crackerpot theory. IMHO, Imelda did strangle Eugenio and tried to slit her own throat. She almost succeeded in snuffing out two lives just to spite her mother and for the hurt to be irrevocable. She didn't think ahead far enough that she wouldn't get too much satisfaction out of her deed. She'd be too dead to enjoy the aftermath.
Just a few nights ago I watched an old Dateline/Extra where an older married woman was having an affair with a much younger working-class man (with her well-to-do husband's twisted permission). Obsessed with her, the young man was sure that with the hub out of the way, they could go on as before, only with her inheritance to live better. He denied having killed her husband for 25 years, after being let go for lack of concrete evidence. She actually went back to live with him after he got off, for years. Then new eyes and new forensic evidence nailed him. There's more to it that doesn't fit Imelda's case, but if Vicente gets off, mightn't there be a possibility Mama might get it on with him again? Crackerpot? Stranger things have happened. Just ask Mr. Mason and Mr. Dunne.
Cahoots to come between her and rick.
They had to know rick and ally would find out. Stupid Carlos & loonylena.
From what rick said Carlos did a bad bad thing illegaly by not letting him know so they could have come to an agreement about something but instead he went to Court first.....Ok what gives Irene?
Leo is so comical running around the office like a Choo Choo train tooting
Bloody murder "He could kill olivia".
With those big chickenlittle eyeglasses on,lol so funny.Seriously the girl is a magnet for troubled bad boys.
Loonylena is really messing With that
Boys head OMG,what a nutjob she turned
Out to be. Little nattie gotta fin for
Herself. Daddy gotta rescue his little
Princessa from the evil gueenmother and her Big brother the dark prince the protector of the dark palace.Yeah.
That guy that married the woman that don't want children should have done
His homework on this woman, or like U
Said Anita he should not have married
Her. Cuz the law has nothing for the father to grab a hold of. I actually
Don't see how they can stay married after something like that. That's heart
Breaking. When she told him that before the "I dos" he should have walked Away. Cuz they usually don't change the mind after marriage. Sad.
Thanks Anita for part 2.
As for Gustavo's latest client, this may not be an unusual situation. It is certainly possible for a couple to marry and later on feel differently about this. My friend and her wasband were both ambivalent about children when they married, as they both came from toxic families. About seven years later she began wanting to have a child and knew that the window of opportunity wouldn't be open too much longer, but she said they needed to move first because the neighborhood had gotten really bad. He refused to see this. She became pregnant at 39 and ended up having a miscarriage just after they had finished telling everyone who mattered to them. She also got the bad news that she was in the early stages of menopause. While they told her that she could try again in 2-3 months, she never became pregnant again and as I type this I have been wondering whether his refusal to move was a passive/aggressive way to deny her a baby. Their sex life had not been great for a while, either. They did move, which helped for a while, but after they moved a second time things went down the drain a year later.
Dear Abby or Ann Landers once received a letter from a woman who desperately wanted to have a baby but whose husband didn't want children at all. She asked whether it was reasonable for her to have a baby and take all responsibility without involving her husband, but was advised to not even think of doing this. That would have provided a very sad life for the child.
I do hope that Ricardo doesn't resort to fisticuffs over Carlos' dirty pool. I also hope that they discover that Carlos is guilty or that Carlos ends up dead courtesy of El Ciego. Benjamin is an idiot for getting mixed up in that.
Urban, I had a friend who was married to a respected, very social law enforcement man. Not a pokiceman, but in the department. He loved to party, but he always took his wife with him. She confided she wanted a baby so badly but that he told her no, he had told her before they married he didn’t want children. She got pregnant, and low and behold, he moved out immediately and filed for divorce. As far As I know, she had the baby and they never reconciled. I don’t know if he has relented or seen his son, who is now an adult. I guess she didnt think he would leave, everyone was shocked.
He can't counsel him on this because what Juan's predicament is, is falling in love impulsively. Rob doesn't fall in love.
Really, Rob? Then why all the wooing of Victoria?
Leo was funny being alarmed about Oli with Alan, but I see no sparks coming from Oli there. She's just pleased for a pleasant diversion.
So Elena is going for the "make Ric miserable" plan instead of the "bait and switch plan using the kids" because after this he'd need a lobotomy to take her back. Fighting for adoption should be a win-win for him -- even if he loses, the kids will know he fought for them and Elena is a liar.
Kudos to the child actress playing Natalia. She did a fine job in her scenes challenging Elena amidst her tears. I'm rooting for her.
You came back in great form and provided us with a breezy and entertaining retelling of another terribly boring episode where nothing happened.
I especially enjoyed the following lines:
" a decent, though deadly dull, caballero"
"Vega's resident Lothario"
"Elena comes into view, wearing a set of bargain basement green and white scarves stitched onto a plain gauzy dark back"
"upbeat peanut gallery"
"the green-scarved monster enters "
"Of course, Carlos is looking to keep his skin and soul intact."
" Fer performs a very public sidewalk break-up (but with no one around, it's pretty private anyway)"
"a roll in the office hay hastily becomes a piece of hay stuck in Leti's eye"
"hand held; hand decisively withdrawn"
"The accompanying music swells to indicate the sad uselessness of the proposition"
"cmon Alonso, we've asked you before, get this hardworking guy his own office--or at least a cubicle where he can display his new leather briefcase and a photo of his sainted mother"
Irene
Laundering money means taking money illegally obtained through criminal activity and making it appear to have derived from a legitimate source. It has to be done without raising the suspicions of law enforcement agencies. Laundering it through Vega and associates is out of the question, because it will draw immediate suspicion of the authorities if a known mobster receives, and it doesn't matter for what kind of services or transactions, millions of pesos from a known law firm.
I am sure the writers are implying that Benjy is laundering the money through Carlos' foundation, but in reality he can't possibly be doing it through the foundation because for such a money laundering to work, El Siego has to be well aware of it and from his conversations with Carlos, it seems that he is not aware at all. I'll explain: El Siego's money is the anonymous donation that Carlos claimed the foundation received. Now, this money has to come back to El Siego and there are only limited options for him to receive it back. He can provide some kind of services for the foundation at inflated prices (such as renting or selling a house, providing furniture, food, etc...) El Siego , of course, has to be aware that he is actually providing such goods/services to know to keep the appropriate receipts and correspondance to explain the origin of the money that is deposited in his account.
Another option would be for the foundation to buy inexistent goods/services from El Siego. Again, El Siego has to have the appropriate receipts to show the authorities.
And one has to understand that the most important thing in successful money laundering is flying under the radar of the authorities. In our case, I honestly can't see how the authorities wouldn't immediately realize that it's really suspicious that a foundation headed by El Siego's attorney transfers large sums of money to El Siego. So, in any case, the whole idea of laundering through the foundation is absurd.
The only thing that could really be successfully done through the foundation is Carlos getting a tax return on "his" donation but it's not that much and it would go to Carlos, not to Siego. Siego himself needs to have a legitimate business to get a tax return on his donation( and in any case, it's too risky because of his connection to Carlos).
Irene
JudyB, what a great analysis of Victoria and Roberto. You have a great way with words, I bet your recaps would have been fantastic.
I am sure Rob likes Victoria a lot and their flirting is cute, but judging by his promiscuous behavior he is not in love with her and she is right not to start a relationship with someone who is not 100% into her.
I am personally not at all bothered by the fact that Carlos took Elena's case. It's true that he did it just to spite Brick, but professionally he did nothing wrong. He acted according to the law and provided his client with a good legal representation. As a lawyer, that's exactly what he should have done.
Of course, his client happens to be a crazy alcoholic child abuser, but he doesn't know about all that and in any case, he is not obliged to like his clients to provide them with the best possible legal advice and representation.
I know it is not going to be a popular opinion, but Brick has no right to go to Carlos, a fellow lawyer, and demand explanations or present grievances as to why he decided to take on a legitimate case.
Carlos doesn't own Brick loyalty and he has the right to take on the cases he wants to without thinking whether it's going to inconvenience Brick.
Irene
Our youngest daughter went to law school for a couple of years before deciding that the law was not for her. But when we attended the law school get together for parents, which included a day of various talks by the professors on legal matters I found it fascinating. Every citizen should have a thorough understanding of the law. But we don't.
However, I'm happily "auditing" your classes on this blog. Thanks Licenciada!
As for my recaps, they were rather pedestrian compared to the brilliance and humor of some of our stars, but they were fun to do back when I had more time and energy.
No, he doesn't know that Elena is an alcoholic child abuser; in fact, he's never met her children, which I think he should have done. He's not a specialist in Family Law, either. If Gustavo, Olivia, Victoria, or Alejandra had gotten a client with this request they would have asked to meet the children.
However, he does know that El Ciego is a criminal and a drug dealer and he took him on as a client out of greed. Greed that he is willing to suspend for Elena because he knows that what he's done for her is riling Ricardo.
I do agree that addressing Carlos on this issue is a mistake and a major tactical error.
Carlos is indeed a weak hombre and a dumb hombre to be involved with a mobster, but I have to give him credit, he, unlike Brick, knows how to fight for what he wants. He is nothing but persistent and he is breaking Ale's resistance bit by bit, slowly but surely, and I can't fault him for it. And in any case, it's Brick's fault that the children were affected by his romance with Ale so much. He did promise Natalia that she is going to be the first to know if he and Ale get together, and then he broke that promise by not telling them. I must admit that I was surprised that he didn't anticipate that the children are going to feel hurt and betrayed by finding out about dad's romance through third parties. He should have had a talk with them immediately after he and Ale became a couple, which happened at least several days(if not weeks) before their first night.
To be a good lawyer one really must love the law with all one's heart (and soul and guts), because when it gets really hard, heartbreaking, tedious, overwhelming and you have to work outrageously long hours and have no life, you can remember why you chose this profession and everything will become bearable and you will keep doing your very best.
So, it's good that your daughter realized that law is not for her, because she would have been suffering doing what she hates for the rest of her life.
I would love to read your recaps but I know how time consuming it is. I want to give recapping another go myself, but unfortunately barely have time to comment, let alone recap.
Irene
But as you said, your career is all-consuming and even finding the time to watch and comment on these shows is difficult. But we all enjoy your presence and your wisdom concerning how things work legally.
Love this group and this blog line. So glad I decided to learn Spanish in my dotage, which eventually led me here. CarayCaray always needs recappers but it also needs intelligent, engaged commenters. So...all good.
Blue Lass, glad you noticed another one of Anita's clever lines. It's easy to miss when there are so many.
I totally agree with you, Carlos can't be objective in this case because he hates Brick and wants to stick it to him. But he doesn't need to be objective, he is not a prosecutor or a judge, which are public servants that need to be objective to correctly do their jobs.
Carlos can take whatever cases he fancies for whatever reason, it's his right as an attorney, as long as everything is done by the book and according to the law, and that's exactly the case.
Carlos simply applied the law, just like any other attorney hired by Elena would do. He didn't lie, didn't unjustly accuse Brick, didn't counsel Elena to give false testimony. He just heard what Elena had to say and asked for a restraining order based on that information.
Although "good" lawyers like Olivia and Gustavo would probably check with the children like you suggest, it is in no way Carlos' obligation. His client is Elena, not her children and certainly not Brick, so he is not obliged to play a detective and run around gathering information totally unnecessary to his case (which is getting a restraining order against Brick). That's the job of Brick's attorney.
The fact that Carlos is a criminal defense attorney taking a case that is not of his specialty is irrelevant, because it's up to the client to decide whether a particular lawyer is good enough to represent her and there is no law that obliges a lawyer to stick to his chosen specialty. Obviously, he doesn't have as much knowledge in this area, but Elena is o.k with it, so there is no problem whatsoever for him to represent her.
In the beginning of this telenovela, Brick the family law attorney represented the three casketeers in a criminal case of grave desecration. He had every right to do this because the clients agreed (and he wasn't objective either because he was doing it to get closer to Alejandra). Same thing here.
And Carlos certainly has a right to take Elena's case pro-bono even though he has an ulterior motive, which is making Brick miserable.
Brick took the three casketeers case pro bono because he had an ulterior motive too, getting into Ale's good graces.
Now, as far as Vega and Associates defending Carlos, I don't see here a problem either. I am sure some would see a moral problem there, Carlos being the ungrateful sob that bites the hand that defends him.
However, I personally think that two thing have nothing to do with one another. Just like Rob and Leo do their job in defending Carlos, Carlos does his job in representing Elena.
Rob and Leo certainly can't dictate to their client how to behave and whom to take on as a client just because they represent him in a criminal case.
And him taking a case that involves their friend and colleague is certainly not a reason to drop him as a client in such at this stage. Lawyers are supposed to ask permission to withdraw from representation and I am sure no court would allow it for such a ridiculous reason in the middle of a murder trial.
Now, whether it's a smart move from Carlos' part to antagonise his lawyers is another question altogether. A smart defendant would probably decide that irritating Brick is not worth losing the zeal and dedication of Rob and Leo. However, Carlos is not very smart, as his involvement with El Siego indicates. So, he probably didn't think about the possible consequences of taking on Elena's case.
Or maybe he knows that Rob and Leo are very decent and professional and they will know how to put their personal feelings aside.
Irene
Carlos' lack of objectivity in this case betrays his normally meticulous way of doing things, which is where he and Alan part company. Carlos is rightfully on Alan's case for carelessness but he himself became careless in not meeting with the children to talk to them to make sure he doesn't make an ass of himself when this case gets uglier. He is very careful in his dealings with Imelda and Pilar where his BS detector was working perfectly. With El Ciego his greed got in the way of that and with Elena his hatred for Ricardo got in the way, along with his obsession with Alejandra.
Who looks like she's going down a path of stupidity. I dearly wish writers wouldn't do this because it makes us lose sympathy for her.
Did PASL bother telling Viewerville the grounds for the restraining order against Ric? Is it simply that Ric is not the legal father? Or, does it claim that Ric is somehow hurting or a danger to the kids and/or Elena. I'm wondering if Ric can sue for defamation of character.
Money laundering has certainly seems to have caught everyone's concern here. As Irene states, the writers haven't sought out any legal input, so they themselves do not think this activity rises to much importance--say as in a narco-novela. Even in those, we see suitcases full of cash that disappear mysteriously or are used as direct pay-offs, while the king-pins live in depraved luxury with a huge "staff" of gun-wielding tough guys to protect them and their business.
I don't have time to check the relevant Mexican law, but generally the standard of proof necessary to obtain a restraining order is much lower than beyond reasonable doubt, so it's not preposterous for Elena to obtain one against Brick. Actually, in the US, the low standard of proof lead to a rampant misuse of restraining orders, especially during divorce proceedings. Judges tend to err on the side of caution and grant restraining orders because an appeal can correct the wrong decision of granting a restraining order whereas nothing can change the wrong decision of not granting one if the person seeking it is murdered by the person against whom she sought protection that the judge failed to grant.

But we know he's a jealous wretch.
And he hates rick. And that is the one and only reason he took that case. And
The fact that he can hide behind the
Law with his head up is a big plus for
Him. He's got the skills to be a very
Good Lawyer. I dont like his character
It makes him the type of person that
Will do anything to get what he wants.
And it has danger in it. He's not even
Thinkin about allys safety. The narcos
Are crazy they will come after anybody
This is the danger for ally and those
Kids. And Elena nor ally know of his
Connection to tnis crazy narco person.
And see, Carlos don't really care he just saw a means to get money hes not thinking about anyones safety. that guy already threatened him. He's not thinking about anybody. He& Elena's not really friends yet, but if they keep working together to break up Ricky and Allie, are going to become friends and see that guy is going to be looking at the people that he hangs with. And he is gonna see who he can use to keep carlos in Line.Carlos just wants to be a winner.
He would have been perfectly happy standing up there pledging his love to Ally on their wedding day knowing that nobody knows that he had sex with a hooker the night before if she hadn't been murdered and he hadn't been arrested. But everybody found out and now he's determind more than ever to win at any cost. Looks like hes on the verge of insanity when he thinks of rick touching ally. She better not slip into stupid mode with this guy.
But she probably will, this is a soap/tn.
That will put Alejandra, Elena, and the children in danger very quickly. Should we expect Ricardo to come to the rescue in the season finale?
Loonylena's den of child imprisonment.
