Amar a Muerte, 12/17/18, Episode 31: Close Calls

It's a bit rough, but I don't like to post too late.

Lucia got to the office and Johny tried playing mind games by saying that Montilla probably suspects her.

Jacobo went into Camilo's office to tell him that cops fromSan Antonio are in Mexico talkingto the local police and passing photos of himself around the entire city. He told Camilo to call his friend in San Antonio to get the contact number for the DA.

Johny tried to scoff at the notion that Montilla suspected him but Lucia said that if he did it was because he had evidence. Of course he tried to convince her that she was Montilla's suspect. Eva came barging in to sneer as usual and throw her weight around. She continued to insinuate that there was something between the two of them and Lucia sarcastically commented that that must be a good idea if Eva was so obsessed with it. Eva finally said that there is an emergency meeting regarding necessary damage control because of the Armente interview. The network's image is at stake because of it. The entire board will be present and they were not to be late. Johny didn't seem too worried.

At the airport Barbara gave Beltino what she said would be his last tequila, as he was drunk because he was not used to it. He got loud and obnox.

Karla called Ernesto from work. As she ended the call she felt the bleeding. Her boss noticed and she begged off to go to the restroom. She saw her true self in the mirror and began to panicand hyperventilate. She started screaming. Her boss opened the door and saw her starting to sink to the floor.

Guillermo and Renata visited Ramon Castillo. They were greeted pleasantly by Senora Castillo who then told her husband that they were providing a psychologist to help him. He was not pleased, saying to bring him someone who can make him walk again. Renata channelled Pollyanna to try to persuade him to just try it and Guillermo promised him a brand-new state of the art TV if he gave it a try. Somehow this also involved Guillermo completing a largist jigsaw puzzle in half an hour.

Juliana went to the Carvajal mansion to see Valentina but was told that her name wasn't on the list (must be the story of this poor girl's life). She took out her cell and called Valentina, who was swimming in the pool. The phone was on vibrate and she didn't hear it as she got out of the pool and ran inside with a snack just presented to her. Juliana left, disappointed.

Eva started talking about the network being in a state of emergency because of Lucia's actions. Lucia told her that the interview had topped the ratings and was influential all over because of the attention to the problem. Johny pointed out that this would work in the network's favor because of the support of the journalism community. “I don't see an emergency.” The other board members agreed. Johny suggested that they show their appreciation for Lucia's actions. As they did he must have been choking on his own hypocrisy. Eva was not happy with this and raised the issue of the connexion the public will see between the company and the narcos. She tried to pull rank but Lucia asked if she wanted to see the succession documents. The other board members told Eva to calm down and suggested they wait a while.

Camilo's secretary handed them a phone number that is technologically capable of disguising the origin of the call. “Jacobo” called Fabian, who recognized his voice. He than claimed that he was in front of his house watching his wife and son. “We have outstanding business and if you don't settle with me,” he said in an attitude typical of Chino Valdez, “I'll have to settle it with your wife and child.”
Of course, this worked, as Fabian said he was going straight back to San Antonio to do exactly that. “Jacopo” gloated at him, then ened the call. Once off the phone he realized how bad he felt about doing that, but Camilo reminded him that he had no other option.

Of course, Fabian told the detective they had to go right back to San Antonio. He even had his suitcase packed.

Beltino went into the airport restroom, feeling sick from booze he wasn't used to. However, he did not see his real face in the mirror..... possibly because Juliana and Lupita were posting xeroxes of it all over Mexico City as Barbara led him to the boarding gate for their flight. He was getting loutish all over again.

Mateo was hoping that his article will be published in view of the interview and the talk it is generating.

Alacran was in a foul mood, knowing that Armente owns him now.

Jacopo and Camilo talked about possibly fessing up before Montilla caught up with him.

Fabian called his wife and told her to take their child and go to her mother's.

Guillermo completed the jigsaw puzzle despite the last piece being under Castillo's glass (How ridiculous is this? More so than the look he and Renata exchanged.)

After an unpleasant exchange with the landlady, Juliana told her mother that she thinks Valentina no longer wants her friendship.

Fabian arrived at the airport and Beltino recognized him despite his inebriation.

Jacopo and Karla met in Camilo's office to talk in front of him. Camilo suggested that they record it. She talked about what had happened at work. The reflection was more than it had been before; it was something she could feel. She talked about the ream and how her arms were burning when she got out of bed. She wanted to go to the casino. Jacopo said he would accompany her. She turned him down because he would be putting himself at risk. This de-evolved into an argument about second chances and no progress was made.

Lucia went to Montilla's office where he told her he had a suspect. He had not revealed the name because it is someone likely to be close to her. She played it cool and he said he suspected Jacopo Reyes. She asked why he thought so. He pointed out that Jacopo appeared in her life right after León was murdered and asked whether she never considered it possible that he was infiltrating her company and her life on Armenta's behalf.

Although Fabian sat right behind them, Barbara reminded Beltino that he wouldn't recognize him because he was in another body. He calmed down, then boldly pat Fabian on the back and commiserated about the upcoming flight. Barbara was amused enough to hand the flask to Beltino.

Lucia told Montilla that he didn't have any proof of any of this.

Emboldened by drink, Beltino struck up a conversation with Fabian while on the boarding line.

Valentina and a friend were hanging out in and around the pool. Valentina asked for more mescal, which Silvina would not get for her. She sounded like she had enough already as she called someone (possibly Lucho).

Jacopo called the airline to make sure that Fabian was on the flight. After considerable effort he got the clerk to confirm that he was. He went into the house where Silvina told him that Lucia was waiting for him in the study. She told him what Montilla said in their meeting. The rest of this could have been scripted by Raymond Chandler as he scoffed, she tried to be cold, and things became heated. He closed the sliding door just in case before assuming what would become a compromising postion.

Johny drove in at the same moment. How many steps will it take him to discover them?

Desk instead of sofa?!? Really Jacobo!?! Lucia es juego con fuego, and Leonchi has death wish.

Thank You UA. A bit rough? Oh, you are talking about your recap ! I got sidetracked with Tarzan picking up Jane and throwing her onto the desk. Poor little thing just couldn't fight him off. Of course Johny B Dammed is striding across the lawn straight toward the glass wall of their room. Perfect, Um...but three's a crowd dufus. Thanks Victoria and Anita, I had forgotten how much I like that word.

Karla is an excitable little thing. Sheezo, I guess when you can't even pull off a successful suicide you just never really forgive yourself.

Thanks again back in a bit.............

Thanks for staying up so late to get this to us UA. Ten PM shows are killers for recappers.

I loved your description of Beltrán getting "loutish" again. I am actually enjoying his scenes with Barbara. She's a good comedienne (I don't think I've ever seen her in a serious role) and I've seen this actor evolve from a shy, straightforward fellow in Juan Querendón,to a smooth, sadistic menace in Bellas y Bestias, and now this role. Nice range for someone who would not be able to make it on looks alone, clearly.

I'll look forward to watching this at lunch-time. As usual the clever folks at Lemon Studios have left us with a sizzling tease to lead us to the next episode.

“Be able to make it on looks alone, clearly” jajaja, you calling Arturo Barba ugly? Hehe
But in all seriousness Beltran is my favorite he so stupidly funny, Barba’s doing a great job and yea he’s played a variety of characters, he’s one of the best actors in this show considering all of them are first level actors/actresses. It’s been great to see his improvement as an actor, too bad he didn’t come out on tv more frequently, I’ve been watching him a long while as well, even before Juan

Beltran is impressive. I agree JudyB. I hated him in B & B, but was having a fun time with him last night.

When he and Mr. Tequila got overly friendly with Fabian at the airport it was so real. Everyone at some time or another has encountered a human barnacle which sticks onto you like a refrigerator magnet and is impossible to remove. They catch you while you are trying to board a flight, or install an uncooperative spark plug or something which requires some amount of your concentration, and they are suddenly your BFF. And they are completely oblivious to all the clues that the conversation has (you thought) ended.

I just do not care for Barbara, but with Beltran, she is a riot.

The jigsaw puzzle scenes lost me. They seemed to be having a competition to see who could finish most quickly. Returning to the scene of the crime is always not a good idea. I am waiting to see Renata visiting Gullible in jail.

Little pipsqueak Lucia is holding her own in this ongoing catfight against the mountain lion Eva. Good for her. She does seem to have better luck with men than women. Go figure.

Nooooo...I would never call any actor "ugly". Arturo Barba is ordinary looking like most of us. But telenovela actors with lead roles, at least, seem to be hyper-muscular, hyper-gorgeous men, which clearly he is not. Just a great, versatile actor, able to blend into many different contexts and roles.

Kirby, I'm looking forward to the airport scenes. Beltrán and Barbara are a welcome comic relief from the tension and/or incipient violence in the rest of the story. And I'm finding those bleeding moths pretty off-putting as well.

hehe, i was just messing around, its hard to articulate what tone one is talking in when it's written, but yea hes a great actor, not the best looking but he has his charm

UA: Good Job on the recap.

Arturo Barba would do well in period dramas. He would definitely look more authentic in Victoria clothes than many other actors specifically because he doesn't have a physique like Fernando Colunga's. He would have fit well in EHDLS.

In fact, the Brazilian network casts actors of both sexes who don't have the modern required bodies, extensive plastic surgery, or high-level dental cosmetic work in period pieces because they look more authentic in them.

These recaps are rough because this time I don't have the luxury of time to craft something more literary. I consider my best work to have been on LQLVMR, PyP, and La Candidata. When PASL Season 2 happens I will likely do something similar with it that I did with the first season since everyone seemed to like it.

Good Morning. Excellent recap, UA, thank you!

ITA about Arturo Barba--excellent and versatile actor! I too enjoyed the airport scene. I wonder how the actor playing Fabian could keep a straight face while shooting that scene...it must have taken quite a bit of resolve.

Kirby, you are right. the puzzle scenes were a competition. Castillo was refusing to go to psychotherapy; then noticed Guille messing around with a puzzle and made some comment. Renata took the opportunity to set up a challenge for Castillo. If Guille could complete the puzzle within a certain time limit, Castillo would have to go to therapy; if Guille didn't finish it within the time limit, Reanta and Guiille would stop bugging Castillo.

OH thanks I was not paying attention.

NOW, we saw a lottalegg up on that desk.
And we saw a LottaJohny striding across that yard toward that Lottalegg.

Anybody want to wager how many episodes it will take Johny to cross that final 5 yards of turf?

No, this aint the Superbowl. Might be the SuperBawl when Johny gets a peek of what his prize filly is doing while the gate was left open.

You can't help but think about RGV with all those new kids and no billys around ? ? ?

And speaking of Johny, since when did he bestow on himself the ability to hire and fire any or everybody. He is an employee of Carvajal, but he has no authority around the Carvajal household, those two are supposedly two separate entities. And really, he should not be allowed to attempt to fire anyone at Carvajal, if he is a bean counter. The bean counters stay in their little counting rooms and count beans, Managers handle the staffing needs along with HR. Whatever.

OPEN LETTER TO CARAYCARAY DEVOTEES
A new CarayCaray team is now in place of our departing guru, Jane, aka Melinama. We appreciate from the bottom of our hearts the tireless stewardship of her blog since she started it with Alborada, all those years ago. We want to thank her for letting us take on the job of continuing with and nurturing this blog. We hope we can do it justice.

To note, the storylines, dialog and content of telenovelas have evolved, many in ways which we don't like or approve. The English language has also evolved and what used to be offensive is now part of social content nation-wide. That goes for standard English broadcasts that are populating the cable and the airwaves as well. We who want to, change with the times, or filter out what is objectionable.

We recap and follow telenovelas for the pleasure of being in a community interested in telenovelas, Spanish language and Central and Latin American culture. The Univision and Telemundo products offered, drive the conversations.

If you have noticed that the number of telenovelas recapped, comments and "hits" on each recap is way down from days of yore, it can be assumed it may stem from the availability of closed captions getting better. Plenty of non-Spanish speakers have drifted off. What is left is a community of like-minded spirits who enjoy the conversations after the recap is posted. We hope each one of you are and continue to be one of them.

Well, well, I finally got to read the recap and the comments. Purrrfect rendition, UA, Thank you. I especially liked the pipsqueak vs. the mountain lion. She's no pipsqueak up on that desk, though. I'm glad you didn't spend too much time on the Jacobo-Karla conversation. I was much more interested in what Luci and Montilla said to each other. I'll elaborate a little later. Have places to go and things to do.

Barbara sure had her hands full last night. I loved her perfectly logically delivered statement to Beltran when he was afraid Fabian would recognize him--that he's in a different body, dufus. She's the one hell-bent on getting on that plane without any attention from the airport police and getting her hands on that money. How she's going to get Beltran to think straight about the location with a tank full of tequila will be fun to watch. I now believe those two are the only comic relief we're going to get--which is ok with me. I like a good drama and a good mystery and sometimes combined.

Oh, about Eva's remark to Luci in the board room. I'll check that, too, because I thought that everything Leon possessed went to Luci, while the board still sat for decisions. Technically that makes Luci, Eva's boss.

And Kirby, I don't think Johny has the right to hire and fire, he's not HR. He can initiate, I guess. At least that was overruled. He's obviously trying to concentrate more and more of the responsibilities and authority that belonged to Leon. He definitely wants to be seen as the HEAD of Carbajal, and Luci in her place at his feet.

Didn't Leon die without a will, which left equal shares to Luci, Eva, Guillermo, and Valentina? Not that this is ever likely in the real world, as men in Leon's position would have to make out wills as soon as they acquire even 10% of what he owned and update their wills as needed.

I wondered also whether someone would try to make the argument that since the marriage had not yet been consummated that Lucia was not entitled to anything. That they obviously voh-de-oh-doh-dohed before the wedding wouldn't count (here in the US, anyway).

Johny isn't smart enough to take over and Eva is too eager to stomp him with her stiletto heels.

"Johny isn't smart enough to take over and Eva is too eager to stomp him with her stiletto heels."

Urban you can be pretty funny when you switch gears. You didn't watch Ramon with us did you? Eva was Esmeralda Pimentel's slightly (I think) younger sister and was mute due to trauma for the first part of the show. She played a girl barely out of her teens as far as I could tell. Two or three galaxies removed from the Eva we see here.

Anita, Johnny tried to fire Jamarillo and Lucia stopped him. But he tried.

Two things--Johny wanted Leon dead before Leon could change his will. I assumed that meant Leon had rewritten an earlier will that didn't include Lucia. I also assumed he'd left his kids something.

Kirby--that's what I was referring to when I said he was overruled. Lucia stepped in.

From what I recall, Leon did NOT have a will. When they all met at the board room (in one of the first episodes), the attorney explained that was why everything was gong to be divided equally among the children and Lucia. Eva got pissed and walked out saying that she would have someone else look into it.

Kirby, is that a current pic on your avatar? I just love to see those majestic eagles flying.

I stand corrected. Guess we can add greedy to the list of Eva's fine qualities.
