Amar a Muerte, 1/21/19, Episode 54: Stalkers, Talkers, and Killers

Eva called Renata out on the carpet for getting her freak on with Guillermo, citing an anti-fraternization rule in the company's policy. [We're wondering where that will go when Eva's own dirty linen is finally aired.] She refused to listen to any explanations, calling Renata a traitor, and telling her that she should clear her desk because she is being transferred to the administration office. Then she picked up a document and told her to shut the door on her way out.

At the same monent at the Carvajal home, Valentina finally told Guillermo that she was in love with another girl. She has mixed feelings about it and seems to fear Eva's eventual reaction. Guillermo is showing that he is a great brother by telling her that she hasn't done anything wrong and should not be concerned with other people's reactions to this. However, he told her to be honest with Lucho and to cut him loose because it was only fair. He guessed correctly that the girl was Juliana and was happy for his sister.

Lupita made it back to the luxury hideaway only to have Pancho tell her that she can't risk going out again.

Lucia and Jacobo lounged in bed and whose name comes up but Johny's. She told hiim that Johny likes to be on top of things (without mentioning herself) and that he should watch out for him. Then they seemed to forget this for better things to do.

Hec/maru approached Roy and told him she had contacted him under a false identity. He wondered whether she had lied about having watched him play baseball, but she told him that was the truth. A few sentences later he became uncomfortable with her overtures and got up to leave. They did walk away together.

Lucia declared her feelings for Jacobo, saying she didn't want any other man in her life. We can't be sure he believes this.

Valentina sent to speak to Lucho and started backing off when she saw he was with others. He noticed her and approached. She said she had to talk to him and he was sensible enough to walk away with her.

Hecmaru and Roy got some ice cream and eventually he started talking about having been bullied as a child and how his father couldn't deal with it. Since his father died he had been seeing a shrink, which surprised Hec/maru. “She” told hiim that he wasn't crazy. He said that it helped him understand things better and he felt better. In response to questions he said that he hated his father when he was alive, but not anymore. His mother had explained that his father had come from an abusive situation and this helped him to understand why his relationship with him was screwed up. Hec/maru listened intently, then told him he was a good kid.

Lucho was confused about this and Valentina told him she was in her own state of confusion. Part of it was about her father's death. She didn't want to hurt him, but when he told her he was prepared to wait as long as necessary, she told him not to. She then said the three deadly words: This is over.
However, when she got up to leave he grabbed her arm and insisted she tell him who it is she is with.

Lucia and Jacobo went for round 2 (or more).

Johny tried getting smarmy with Susanna only to see that Inspector Montilla was there waiting to see him, stalking him like Columbo, talking about his recent precautions. They went into his office.

Guillermo arrived at the office to discover Renata's desk vacated. He confronted Eva, who told him she transferred Renata to prevent him making a fool of himself. She reminded him of the bogus rule about fraternization and he told her that his personal life is none of her beeswax. He also figured out that Mayela was somehow behind this. She tried to deny it and she showed him the security footage that was recording everything. He told her to stop the nonsense, as their father had done the same. When she used the T word (“traipadora”) to describe Renata he lost it and slammed his fist on the desk. He told her she had better stop interfering or she would regret it and swore on their father. Before she could spit any more poison he walked out of her office.

Renata was having a bad morning, as the head of administration is a taskmaster determined to give her a lot of boring things to do and revoke her right to coffee breaks and the occasional three-margarita lunch. She was not liking this one iota and it sounded like she was holding back tears. He asked what was wrong and she told him her allergies were acting up. He said this was not an excuseand turned backto his desk. Since her desk was in the corner of his office facing the wall this is doubly like detention.

Montilla showed Johny a photo of Luis Camargo, the man who killed Leon, saying that he had worked in that very office as head of security. Johny tried to keep his cool, but he looks like he is beginning to crack.

Silvina went to Fabricio to get him to help her with the secret door. He had been washing the ugly red car.

Lucia told Jacobo about Armenta's unwelcome gift. He reminded her that he had told her to watch out for herself around Armenta. She is now so besotted with Jacobo as he seems to be with her. Are they taking precautions?

Daniel didn't seem to be, as he was driving the ugly red car and being followed by Armenta's goons. They ran him off the road and ordered him out of the car at gunpoint. They ordered him to throw away his cellphone, then shot him to death, almost like Sonny in The Godfather.

Montilla gave his latest hypothesis, that the one who contracted the killing of Leon Carvajal also worked for the company. Johny gave him his merde-eating grin and asked how he could help. Montilla told him he needed all the employee records. Johny promised that his secretary would help. Montilla then asked why it is that they could find no employee records of Luis Camargo. Johny gave his usual non-answers, asking whether he thought that narcos had anything to do with this. Montilla did not think so, but that the mastermind behind Leon's death still works in his company. This ended with Johny still promising his assistance as Montilla took his leave.

Lucho followed Valentina, demanding to know whom she was cheating on him with. He grabbed her by the arms, she struggled, and one of his bros came over and made him back off. Valentina got away. Lucho looked like a little time in a mental hospital would benefit it.

Valentina called Juliana to tell her about this and they arranged to meet.

Hec/maru brought Roy home and her mother invited him to stay for dinner. She then told Hec/maru privately that this was madness because this boy was her/his son. Hec/maru replied that he wanted to get to know him.

Fabricio became concerned about Daniel and then they got a visit from his killers, who told him they had something that belonged to him. They demanded entrance.

More wine as Lucia thought of Leon and admitted missing him. This has been difficult because of losing him on their wedding day. They changed the subject. Jacobo asked whether she would go away with him. Then the phone rang. She answered because she saw it was Silvina, who told her she had to return ASAP. She was very upset and Lucia could hear this.

Renata and Keyla talked about what happened at the office and Teo didn't make this any better.

The bitches witches gloated over this, although Mayela wasn't satisfied that Renata hadn't been terminate outright. Eva said she didn't want any more trouble with her brother than necessary before they parted company for her to go to a meeting (which I suspect is actually a party).

Guillermo went to the administration office to look for Renata, who was not there. He caught her in the corridor and she told him she was going to resign. He told her that this would be giving Eva what she wants, but Renata said she didn't want to be gossiped about. She asked rhetorically how Eva knew and Guillermo told her about the security video. He didn't tell her because he didn't want to worry her about it. She said she needed time and went back to work.

Belchino thought again about seeing his real body in the hospital corridor, then about his encouter with Lupito.

Lupita was thinking about her encouter with the physical El Chino. Pancho told her she looked like she was actually far away. She wasn't sure what to do. Pancho said he would stick to her and help as long as she needed him. Another marriage will go down the drain.

Lucia and Jacobo returned to the mansion and saw Daniel's dead body behind the wheel of the ugly red car. There was a note on the windscreen with the words "Malagradecida" in block letters. She collapsed against the car.

Let's see if Montilla is smarter than Johny.

Please clarify:. Did Lucia know that Johny was going to kill Leon? Or was she only made aware after the job was finished?

If I recall, I remember that Johny got Lucia out of her mother's bordello when she started selling Lucia to her clients. Then he groomed her to become someone important in Leon's life so that together they could take over Leon's business?

Lucia didn't know nothing about a arranged murder until it was too late.

The note left on Daniel's body said "Malagradecida", which means "Ungrateful". It wasn't Armentas name.

Thank you, Urban, it's always a pleasure to read you.

Sadly Lucia and Jacobo's love fest was short lived - this Armenta guy is such a pest, why can't he go away for at least a day or two?

So Eva is now worried about company fraternization? Correct me if I'm wrong, but did she not marry Mateo AFTER he came to work for his father? Or she just used nepotism to get him a comfy job after? Such a moral compass that she has! I must admit I expected her to fire Renata on the spot, but maybe having the girl still there will serve the plot later on? Being on administrative duty means getting her hands on all types of documents, right, maybe she discovers something shady about Eva herself?

I don't care about Jul&Val, but I do believe they'll soon get into serious trouble with Lucho.

I also wonder if Montilla is pretending to work with Johnny only to see his reactions while considering him his number one suspect.
Now that I think about it Johnny was not that clever after all - he hired the company's security head to set up the assassination and then he had him "commit suicide" by jumping from the company's balcony. Are there no mercenaries for hire left in Mexico City? Too bad the real El Chino was busy being executed, if not he would have made for a great murderer.

Thank you, Urban.
Victoria, we don't really know for sure about Lucia and Johny's plans. We know she did not expect him to kill Leon when he did, at her WEDDING, so we kinda know what she says she didn't know, but we don't know what she did know. Prob on purpose. I always thought it was more that he forked up her beautiful wedding.

I have always had the impression that what bothered her was Johny's timing, and not clearing it with her beforehand. So from what I have seen she is almost as guilty as Johny.

I think Montilla is waaaay ahead of slimeball Johny. He appears to be pretty clever, by giving Johny just enough information to make him nervous and hopefully cause him to make mistakes covering his tracks.

Eva and her glass house. Arrrrgh. Poor little Renata's bliss only lasted one change of clothes. That's just about a record.

Love Fest: I was impressed to see Lucia come up for air with her makeup kissed off. Most of these TN girls still look the same as when they started after wearing some lucky guy OUT.

Boy Lucia is a magnet for shitheads. After her Mom, where she obviously had no choice, it is like out of the frying pan and into the fire, twice. First Johny, and now Armenta. Is Hannibal Lecter available next? She finds herself in a real mess now, By The Way, of her own making. I have zero sympathy or empathy for Lucia. When you at the very least know who killed your spouse and do nothing, that is unforgivable.

We are seeing Lucia appear to fall head over heels in Luuuurve with LCJ, while in the background, he is wondering how long he has, in days or weeks, not decades. So will that be her punishment, to see Death Chick come with her outstretched hand about the time she (Lucia) has come to the point of no return?

Great recap from beginning to end, starting with a terrific title. My favorite paragraph was this:

Lucia and Jacobo lounged in bed and whose name comes up but Johny's. She told hiim that Johny likes to be on top of things (without mentioning herself) and that he should watch out for him. Then they seemed to forget this for better things to do.

That wry tone is so UA.

I noticed some nifty transition sentences too. Always a challenge to try and tie disparate scenes together with some kind of linking sentence but you did it deftly.

Eva and Mayela's revenge on Renata was toxic. Did Eva encourage the head of administration to be a dreadful bully so that Renata would quit on her own? Anyway, I like your theory, UA, that it will put her in a position to perhaps discover Eva's money laundering schemes. Tit for tat.

Great work. Thanks UA.

Actually, Lucia didn't order for anybody to kill León, she just wanted the money in the beginning, but after she got to know León she actually really fell in love with him, and as we know before and whilst she was married to León she was having an affair with Jhonny. Jhonny then obviously got jealous as always, and wanted Lucia for himself, so he orderd for the employee to kill León at his wedding. Lucia was not aware of this and did not expect it, but now that the truth is coming to the surface, Jhonny is manipulating Lucia by telling her that "they" killed León, so that he is not alone in it. But as far as Lucia, she actually loved León and she did not want him to die. That is what the story is about, them loving each other even through death. Now.. Lucia has done a lot of wrong things but she did not try to kill him... This is what i think and what i got from the story so far..

I think the writers may have gotten a little crossed up here about Camargo and the waiter who actually killed Leon, and who was subsequently killed by Johny at the wedding. From episode 20:

At the company, a secretary comes to tell Johny that there is a cop waiting for him in his office…he’s been waiting for 20 minutes. As Johny enters his office, he sees Inspector Montilla who has come to tell him that there has been progress in the Carvajal case and he thought Johny would want to be the first to know. All ears, Johny listens as Montilla tells him that it has to do with the person who actually murdered León, the waiter Johny killed. Johny quickly reminds Montilla that it was self-defense. Montilla then tells him that they have been able to link the waiter to a second person who committed suicide by jumping out of a window. Johny flashes back to when he killed BaldMan who was named Luis Camargo. After Montilla tells him that Camargo was the head of a group of assassins, he adds that they assume that Camargo hired the waiter to kill León. Johny then wonders why Camargo would commit suicide, so Montillo tells him that is the clincher because they think someone helped him along with the suicide.

Renata may be in the administration office just long enough to hand the relevant documents to Montilla. Nobody's goose will be cooked just yet, but this will provide the seasoning and the bay leaf.

Eva is a full-blown narcissist who thinks the rules don't apply to her. If Renata finds a skeleton in Eva's closet that would be poetic justice.

Can't add much more than una gracias grande for UA's recap. This episode was all over the place, but you kept us focused.

I agree with Adriana and Anon at 9:25's interpretations, in so far as Lucia wasn't actually married to Leon until his date with death. So she was "doing" two guys at the same time. I agree that Lucia fell in love with Leon, maybe seeing him as her knight in shining armor to save her from Johny's manipulations and from whom she could finally be free. I don't think murder was in her game book. I think Johny convinced her it would be easy to bilk the business and gradually assume power and control if she managed to marry Leon. As for Johny's attraction, if there ever was any--could have been debt or duress that made her an accomplice. None of their love-making since the show started has been very enthusiastic on her part--or she's been able to avoid it. She told Jacobo to leave Leon, Johny and even Armenta out of their new "equation."

Thanks, Kirby for the reminding us of Lucio Camargo's real role. I was confused there. Maybe Montilla is NOT confused, but is trying to confuse Johny. It was highly unlikely that the Waiter-Killer was the head of security for Carvajal and orchestrated the assassination. Johny killed him (in self-defense...such accurate words to be uttered by Johny). The head of security HAD to be Baldy. Meanwhile, Montilla wants to see all the personnel records--for something else he's obviously not sharing with Johny. Anyway, these intricacies are certainly enticing. Makes me forget the Hec-Maru story altogether.

So, Lucia noted how both Jacobo and Leon licked their fingers after touching the opened bottle of wine. She admitted that Leon was a "tipaso" and that she missed him and she felt he was near her.

I also notice that Jake, for the most part, still uses the formal Ud. with Lucia. He slipped when he was talking to Luci about how dangerous Armenta was and used the familiar.

If you can't tell by now, I'm invested in this couple, despite its toxic outcome, so I listen carefully -- when it's clear enough -- to how they talk to each other. Jake is obviously still very conscious of the employee-employer relationship. It was cute when she told him he deserved a promotion and he was now to become her security guard--and he will be in charge of guarding her heart. I also notice that Luci is very effusive in telling Jake how she feels about him. His billet-doux are restrained but carry an impact. I thought I heard him say LeAmo before going in for round 3.

Kirby--There's another twist in Columbo's investigatory prowess. In one of those early Montilla interviews with Johny, didn't he say Baldy was found with Visitor's passes, or invitations, to some affair being held by Carvajal in his pocket, proving he knew someone at Carvajal? Now he has actual Employee ID's of--which was it, Camargo or Baldy? Dang. This means I have to rewatch the episode (hehe).

Lucia never loved Leon. She was working him the entire time. At most, she grew affection for him, but not much else. She didn't know he was going to be killed, because the original plan was to embezzle the money, not take everything that belonged to Leon. Further, she could have come clean about the murder from the beginning, and she's told Johnny various times that she loved him before (another doubtful thing she's said). She's not Johnny's victim by any means at this point- she's his dirty accomplice. Hopefully she gets her karmaggeddon.

Also, amar a muerte means "love to death" not beyond death.

Anita, yes:

Montilla tells Johny that inside Camargo’s wallet they found two passes to the Carvajal company. Johny pretends to be shocked that León’s murderer was able to walk into the company like any guest, but when Montilla tells him that he suspects that the person who hired Camargo still works there at the company, Johny uses all his bottom cheek strength to avoid an eruption. Johny then generously agrees to cooperate and hand over any records or security videos that Montilla requests. Montilla is glad because that is exactly what he was going to ask for—he knows the date and time when Camargo was there and he wants to know exactly where he went and who he talked to. As Montillo gets up to leave, they shake hands (uncomfortably long) as Johny assures Montilla that if there is anyone who wants León’s murderer found it is him; and Montillo adds that he WILL find him.

Thanks, UA for such a superb recap. With so many storylines and twists in each, it is difficult to keep up with who did what to whiom and when.

Kirby, thanks for digging up that scene. I do remember that Baldy aka Camargo was the middle man who set up Leon’s murder. He was the one that was “helped” out of the window by Johny.

Anita, IIRC, it was also Camargo who was found to have passes to the Carvajal company. I believe Johny’s story was that Camargo had requested the use of a party room...or something like that.

Anita, you heard correctly, Jake did say Te amo” to Lucia and suggested to that they run away together. Typical man-thinking...with the wrong head. He’s completely disregarding that Lucia was boinking Johny even before they married...and that she is now “so in luuurve-never felt this way” with someone who she believes is a totally different man.

More layers...

Kirby, shall we call you “Inspector Johnson”? I wa writing when you posted... thanks again!

OK so Camargo AKA Baldy is the one who actually hired the waiter to kill Leon, (at Johny's request). Then at the wedding Johny killed the waiter as soon as he (waiter) finished his mission of knifing Leon, then next day or later, Johny goes and pushes Camargo out of a window.

In the subsequent investigation, they find passes to Carvajal in his (Camargo's) wallet, and now recently Montillo discovers that he was actually head of security at Carvajal around that time.

I think the waiter had a name too but I don't remember.

Same time

I think we've got it. When Monty says the master mind still works at Carvajal, he's probably already thinking it's Johny.

Thank you, UA, I always enjoy your recaps.

Chickie, Anita, and Kirby, thank you for helping me understand how Leon' s murder went down.

Lucie surely seems to be head over heels in love with Jake, and it does not seem to just be with his attractive outside. Perhaps she did really love Leon and senses him in the new and improved packaging. I am, as always, a hopeful romantic .

Well, after a busy day of errands....lawyer, post office, copy center...I am enjoying a zucchini \onion omelet , and then some telenovelas. About 30 today but sunny and clear.
