Mi Marido Tiene Más Familia, Capítulo 97, Tuesday, January 29, 2019; Neto’s Deportation Begins

We open with Neto gratefully accepting his promotion to manager. He’s started at the bottom as a dishwasher, but with hard work, now is accepting the manager position. His boss mentions the matter of his documentation but Neto says he is still waiting on his lawyer to finish up the process. He has spent a lot of time and money trying to get his papers and hopes that it will all be completed very soon.

In Oaxaca, at Susana’s house, Grecia jumps in the pool and swims across and then gets out. As she gets out, Crisanta asks Grecia what happened to her back. [It appeared to be a tattoo] She shrugs it off and says it happened long ago. Then she sees Susana with her suitcases and wants to know what is going on. Susana happily announces her plans to move in with Pancho.

At the school, an official discusses the belching matter with Hugo. He asks Hugo if he has any suspicions as to who it could have been. But the official says he is suspicious that Sebastian is the one responsible after looking at the video. Hugo doesn’t quite agree. Later he questions Sebas with Susana to see if Sebas would admit to this act. Susana says he didn’t do it and that he has changed a lot. Sebas too, denies having anything to do with this act. Susana knows that this time he is being unfairly accused and says there is no evidence. But the administrator says that because of Sebas’s history, he must be guilty. Sebas begins to cry and says, “I know I’ve been a mischievous boy, but this time, I didn’t do this. I would never do anything that would actually hurt anymore.” Hugo comes and tries to get Sebas to calm down. Susana tells the administrator to do his job and investigate to find out who really did this.

Grecia is getting ready to teach her class. She has an apple ready on her desk. After the class comes in, she takes the apple and starts to eat it. She is talking about the story of Snow White and suddenly, she falls to the floor. [Kind of like Snow White, after the witch gave her the poison apple.] The boys all get up to help her and Ari says they should call an ambulance.

Diana comes to help get Grecia up and asks where the apple came from. Grecia said it was on her desk when she arrived. She didn’t know that something would be wrong with he apple.

At the playground, Julio accuses Sebas of being the one responsible for the belching attacks. But he is adamant that he did not do this.

Lupe and Frida go into the bathroom and see Grecia there. She asks what is wrong and tells Frida she is growing up and has a of feeling that she does not know what to do with. She says that the two of them can have a nice talk together. It seems that Frida is getting her period and she has not had anyone to talk to about it and needs her mother.

In Miami, Neto is happily doing his duties as a good restaurant manager, showing the clients the different foods and drinks. Mariachi music is in the background and his children are there. Neto makes an announcement thanking everyone for their hard work making this restaurant a success. He introduces the new mezcal and dedicates it to his family. The mariachi band comes in playing, “Cielito Lindo.” Yolo is not pleased and looks very embarrassed and says, “Oh no, could it be any more chiché?” She hangs her head low in embarrassment and looks like she would rather be anywhere but there. At the end of the celebration, Neto’s boss Martín shakes hands with him. One of the staff, a woman named Juana comes over to thank him even though she does not have her papers. Neto says, “Well that’s the way we Mexicans are, we all help each other out.”

The happiness is short lived and interrupted by the arrival of immigration officers. The announce they are looking for Ernesto Rey and tell him they have orders to arrest him since he is not in the country legally. Neto shows his “green card” and the officers tell him that it’s a fake. [I have no idea how they would know this with one glance.] The officers look at the children and ask if they are citizens and they all say they were born in the USA. The officers go after everyone in the restaurant who they think is “illegal.” The officers tell Neto he needs to wake up from his “American dream.” Neto tells the officers he will not leave his children as they are minors. The officer then tells him he will be deported along with his three children. The kids start to panic.

At Blanca and Eugenio’s place the family is eating breakfast. Daniela mentions about going to the hospital to see her triplets. Then Eugenio asks, “Why are they in the hospital?” Everyone including Blanca (who has no clue yet) looks at him. The girls cover Eugenio but Blanca doesn’t seem to be buying the excuses. Linda changes the subject by talking about the kids at the burned foundation. She says she is enjoying helping the children, especially the one named Gabi. Daniela mentions that it’s hard getting with life knowing that Gabriel won’t be there to share it with her. She requests to Blanca that they have a mass done in his honor.

In Miami, the scene continues with he immigration officers telling the “illegals” that they will be transferred to a detention center. One tells Neto that anything he says can be used against him because he is a criminal. The immigration officers mock him and say, “Do you have anything else to say? I didn’t think so.” Yolo pipes up and say, “But I’m not Mexican. I’m American.” Another officer says, “Well, then we can look at your papers to see if you have the right to remain in the United States.” [I think these “papers” are called a birth certificate.] Neto says he will not be separated from his family. They kids want to go home and get some things to take with them, but the officer says they will not be allowed to do that, they can only bring what they are wearing right now.

Martín calls Guido to let him know what happened and that immigration raided the restaurant and took all the undocumented workers. He says that the restaurant will be closed. Guido is very upset and throws his glass on the floor. He tells the guy to just disappear.

Nonno walks in and asks Guido why he is so upset. Guido tells him that Martín hired nothing but illegals in that Miami restaurant and now it has to close. Massimo tells Guido later that he will call his friend who is a Senator to see if he can help with the undocumented workers problems. Guido says, “Grandpa, you always know what to do”

Imelda comes in to pay Massimo a visit. He tells her he always has time for her. Then Crisanta comes to visit and Guido tells her that Massimo is busy. So Guido goes to get Massimo and tells him that a client is there to see him. But before he goes, he and Imelda share a shot of mezcal together. Imelda is escorted out the other way as Crisanta comes into the room. She then says, “hey, do you want to tell me what is going on?” Massimo looks a little puzzled and she says, “So why are you drinking the mezcal without me?”

Neto and his family, along with the rest of the detainees from the restaurant are on a bus to take them to a detention center. Yolo does not want to go to Mexico. She says everything she loves is right there in the USA. What also comes out of this conversation is that the children’s mother abandoned them at some point.

At the school, Grecia tells Hugo and Diana that she never thought that the apple would be contaminated and thought the apple was from one of the students as a gift. Diana starts to yell at Hugo and tells him that he as the Director should be making the decision to resolve expose the culprit. Then a little video comes across his screen. It’s kind of a cartoonish thing with a frog that said something like, “It seems that the frog jumped on the apple and then the apple was contaminated. We hope that no one else fainted.” Diana starts yelling at Hugo again and tells him the proof is right there.

Dave and Lupe start talking and they are followed by Julio and Sebas. Julio is trying to accuse Sebas as the culprit and Sebas tells him to stop it. Since the video has a frog and Julio likes frogs, Sebas then says that Julio must be the culprit. Then they both get into a fight and Lupe and David have to pull them apart. Lupe tells them all they need to be united and to stop fighting. Pretty soon someone sees the teacher coming and they all scramble to their seats.

As Temo and Ari play some basketball together, Temo kind of motions to Ari if he thinks it might be there other boys over a few feet away from them who committed the apple incident.

Pancho and Polita talk about her problems with Imelda. He offers to lend her some money, but she turns it down. He tries to comfort her.

Dani gets the babies’ cribs ready for them and looks at their baby shoes. She is reminded of when she and Gabriel shared a moment regarding the baby shoes. It makes her sad that Gabriel will not be there to see the babies grow. She wants him to come back so badly and feels like he is on a trip that he will never return from.

Well Massimo tells Guido that having both his novias there was such a close call as they almost ran into each other. He also tells Guido he is very worried about what happened in Miami with the restaurant. Guido asks if there is any chance they can reopen the restaurant. Massimo says his lawyers are working on it. He gets up and is a little wobbly. Guido asks if he is alright. Massimo tells him that he is really missing Gabriel. He knows Gabriel would have a good idea. Guido does not look happy to hear that his grandfather misses Gabriel.

At the detention center in Miami, officers tell Neto since he broke the law because he had falsified documents, he will not get to go before a judge.  He asks about what will happen to his children. Officers tell him that he can leave them in child protective services custody of the state or they can be “deported” along with him. Down the hallway, he sees a mother being separated from her child as she tells the child, “I’m going to come back for you.” It’s a sad scene as the child is forcibly taken from her mother. Neto’s kids just watch while an armed officer with what looks to be a machine gun is there next to them. Neto says they will not be separated, so the officers tell him that they will immediately be deported and will not be allowed to take anything with them. They are told that everything they own will stay in North America. [Hey, I thought Mexico was considered North America too.] Yolo blames her father and says this is all his fault and is very angry. Neto says, “In times like this, we need to support each other.” “Dad, you have ruined my life and I hate you,” says Yolo.

I shake my head at the way they portray how Mexicans are deported. I know for a fact that it doesn't happen like this and undocumented Mexicans many times stay here years and years before their deportation hearings come up. It's only those who are caught within 100 miles of the border get an expedited deportation. In cases like our story, they are allowed to have a lawyer.

I also laughed at Yolo. I was that way at her age. I was so embarrassed with anything Mexican and I detested mariachi music. I'm not that way anymore. :)

Cynthia, thank you for this excellent recap and the great comments.

Wow! It seems in Osoriolandia an ICE agent is really judge, jury, and executioner as well as a cop of sorts. Good thing they didn't have a portable electric chair with them.

I laughed back when Imelda wanted a wall built, paid for by Crisanta, but it's getting very political now.

Those ICE guys are nasty, but at least they speak Spanish with a better accent than the crazy Mexicans.
:-)

:-)

I don't want to say too much for fear of stepping on someone's political toes and starting an argument, but the current immigration situation is quite sad. Suffice it to say that if Mexico could raise the living standards, and not just for the top stratum, then Mexicans would be more like Canadians, only coming here for plum acting jobs.

Dani looks very sad, but certainly still very pretty, just different than before. I hope she cheers up soon. I hope somebody cheers up soon or all these sad stories will plunge me into depression.

Just excellent. Thank you, Cynthia. Now at least we know how Neto gets to Mexico. I felt sorry for Frida. I guess Xavi Galan’s world tour is never ending.

Cynthia, it's always a pleasure to read your excellent recaps.

Your spot on comments "[Kind of like Snow White, after the witch gave her the poison apple.]" and "[I think these “papers” are called a birth certificate]" were my favorites.

So Guido had his nasty little hands on the restaurant...I can't wait for his comeuppance. Such a despicable little worm.

So Neto and his family are uprooted and destined for Mexico. No spoiler but I suspect he will soon be in the orbit of the "family".

"It seems in Osoriolandia an ICE agent is really judge, jury, and executioner as well as a cop of sorts" was on the mark andy.

Is it just me but I am suspecting Diana. She seemed cool and rather disenfranchised from what was going on. She is seething she lost her job and is blaming Sebas and Hugo. Hugo seems genuinely upset and I don't think Sebas had anything to do with this. But what was in that apple? I don't see Diana really capable of hurting anyone but...

I hope Eugenio tells Blanca soon as his condition is becoming more obvious every day.

And yes poor Frida!" Xavi Galan’s world tour is never ending" had me smiling Jarifa.

I adore Dani. And yes, of course she is beautiful. I felt that her lavender hair just softened her a bit and I miss that.

I think Grecia must have a sad backstory. I did the tattoo but didn't see it long enough to register what it was...

Just a matter of time till Massimo gets caught. I hate to say it but he really seems to prefer Imelda. As her husband did despite being with Cris 50 years. I don't get it.

This was great - thank you Cynthia.

Diana

Thank you Cynthia for the prompt and excellent recap.
We are all glad that Neto and his children are coming to Mexico. The American Dream has turned into nightmare for so many, many souls.
Yes you are correct about Mexico being considered in North America - at least as far as the UN is concerned. But local usage varies greatly on how the terms is applied. Here's an excerpt from Wikipedia's latest entry:

"The United Nations formally recognizes "North America" as comprising three areas: Northern America, Central America, and The Caribbean. This has been formally defined by the UN Statistics Division.[12][13][14]
The term North America maintains various definitions in accordance with location and context. In Canadian English, North America generally refers to the land mass as a whole consisting of Mexico, the United States, and Canada, although it is generally ambiguous which other countries are included, and is mostly defined by context.[15][16][17] In the United States of America, usage of the term may refer only to Canada and the US, and sometimes includes Greenland[18][19][20] and Mexico (as in the North American Free Trade Agreement),[19][21][22][23][24] as well as offshore islands."

I think it's better to refer to all non USA countries as being part of Latin America, based not on geography but language.

Gosh, what a dramatic episode Cynthia! Thanks for covering it and sharing your own story about being embarrassed by Mariachi music and all things Mexican when you were an adolescent. The teen-aged years are a trying time for everybody, adolescents and parents alike.

I'm with Andy, this show right now is not for people vulnerable to depression. And with our wind chills today, count me in that category! But the folks in Oxaca need a breath of fresh and muy caliente air and looks like it's going to be our hunky Gabriel Soto. Works for me!

Loved the recap and the screenshots. Storyline not so much.

Thank you for your recap, Cynthia. Well done!

"I think it's better to refer to all non USA countries as being part of Latin America, based not on geography but language. " So.... Canada? 😉

Difficult raid, indeed, to watch by ICE workers. I doubt they are raiding like that in real life, but AFAIK anyone arrested for a crime and without proper papers gets deported..

Diana - Your theory about Diana being the school culprit is brilliant. The problems started after Hugo's crazy unrealistic appointment as principal of the school. Makes perfect sense to me. But, Yeesh, another psycho in the family? Gimmeabreak. 🙄

Ah, Yolo, she will be Linda v2.0

Isn't it amazing how in Osoriolandia that Grecia rides into town on a bicycle and has a job rpteaching at the school, is a death and dying specialist, as well as a specialist in dementia and Alzheimer's ?????

My telenovela beanie hat is strapped on my head, with aluminum foil lining in place. Seriously, I think the season #2 writers' contracts expired when Robert & Julieta's did and the monkey writers have been brought in. 🍌🍌🍌

Cynthia: Welcome to Pete Wilson 2.0!

Geez, what kind words doris.

I would love to be right. Just once!

Diana

Thank you, Cynthia.

Well, I hope that these new characters will bring brighter storylines.

Grecia seems to a kind of Mary Poppins for adults riding into town out of the blue to help everyone with their varied and sundry problems.

It is bright and sunny here today after yesterday's day of snow . We only got about 4 inches. Today they are predicting some kind of snow squall .

Our temperatures are dropping. It is only 20 right now. Zero tonight.

Okay, the guy who plows my driveway is here. #ihatewinter

It's been a few days since I caught any screen action. I did see Gabe's death scene and later when he appeared to Dani and the babies. I was very happy to see Blanca return. Dani and Eugenio really need her right now. The thought of evil Guido making plans to get rid of the babies is sickening.

The hunky Neto should cheer things up, although his teen daughter will have the opposite effect. It's a real benefit to be able to follow the action with the recaps and comments.

Susanlynn and all of you in the super cold areas--stay safe and warm through this arctic blast. We are getting some of the cold in NC, but not as much as further north.

Susanlynn: Only 20 degrees ? YIKES.

Here in San Antonio, TX., it's currently 48 right now & feels like 43.

La Paloma: Guido is going to kill the triplets ?

Thanks, Cynthia. Great job.

It's nuts the way they portray ICE but oh well a new storyline is welcome. Yay, Soto is in the house. I vote he and Grecia hit it off.

Thanks everyone for your comments. It was a fast moving episode last night with a lot of stuff going on. I usually turn on my recording after the show has aired and then start typing away as I re-watch the show.

Doris: I agree concerning Grecia!
