Por Amar Sin Ley, Season 2 Lunes 3/18/19, Episode 5: Information

I'm Christopher Mason. In the modern world, the right information is as valuable as gold. For both arms of the law it is more valuable than the best stock tip. It's what can make or break everything. Some people will even sell their integrity for information.

I'm Candace DeLong. FBI agents and everyday police do whatever they need to do to get theh information they need to make their case. Usually within the law.

Jaime thanked Paula for allowing him to stay in her home. She told him that while their marriage didn't work, they had Alejandra. She credited him with Alejandra's courage. He said that Alejandra had her smile and her zest for life.

Juilo's girlfriend took his hand as they watched

Ariadna (his mother) cry and heard her talking about how wrong it was for thieves to take her husband's life and destroyed her family. Ariadna told her sister that the police had opened an investigation but....
Julio and his girlfriend got up and left his aunt to deal with his mother's tears.
They stood a few feet away and his mother said that he and his father had been virtually inseparable the day of the murder. The two women got up and went to the teens.
Ariadna hugged her son as his girlfriend watched.

Wednesday Addams couldn't have looked any creepier.

The girlfriend took Ariadna's hand with the standard words of condolence.
Julio then hugged his mother ...and exchanged a look with his girlfriend over her shoulder.

These two teens have a lot of explaining to do.

Roberto and Victoria ate Chinese food, drank wine, and bantered at her apartment with the television news on in the background. Their conversation stopped when the newscaster spoke of the death of music producer Sergio Servantes and the search for Jacinto Dorantes by international agencies. He was being sought on charges of bribery and fraud; the accusations were filed anonymously. Roberto said that they needed to be more alert than ever. They could not be sure what would happened if Dorantes was cornered. While Roberto was looking for a dessert course and trying to tempt Victoria, Victoria teased him until she went off to bed alone. However, he looked as though he was willing to wait.

Alejandra came home, accompanied by Ricardo. They found her parents walking around the ground floor, as Jaime needed to get the strength back in his legs. He thanked Ricardo for all he had done and Alejandra said that Ricardo had refused to let her do this alone. Ricardo said that Dorantes would not be getting away with this.

Juan talked the same subject with Susanna and Fernanda, warning them not to go out by themselves. He talked about the psychological use of fear and how they should not cave to it but he didn't want what happened to Gustavo's family to happen to his.

Ricardo went to Elena's apartment to say goodbye to his children. They made him promise to sent their things to them and he told them he would. Also, that this would not be forever. He hugged them with a pensive expression.
He did not see Elena's wistful face.

The following morning Julio and his girlfriend slowly set the breakfast table. His mother was still crying. All wore the same clothes they had worn to the wake. She was anxious about all the things that had to be done now. He told her he would help. His mother seemed helpless, as though she knew nothing of her husband's finances or other related matters.
Julio hugged her. He exchanged a look with his girlfriend again.
She finally told them she was going upstairs to rest. “I love you, son. Don't ever forget that.”
She went upstairs and they exchanged another look.

These two look thicker than thieves.

Yes, they do, and we both know that the only thing that can unite people that strongly – or force them apart – is murder.

Ricardo took Elena and the children to the airport. The goodbyes were not easy, as neither Federico nor Nati seemed to understand why Ricardo could not accompany them or visit them the next day. He told them to call whenever they wanted. He hugged them all goodbye and they waved goodbye to him as they went past the gate.

Victoria and Roberto went to the office with him continuing to sing the praises of his other talents. Victoria listened and said very little. Although they were neither kissing nor even touching after they had entered the elevator,
Sofia recognized the chemistry when she arrived a few seconds later. “You make a great couple,” she said. Victoria started to correct her, but Roberto said “See, we can't hide it.” Sofia ignored the rest, wished them a good day, and went on to her office.

Gustavo stopped by the police station to see Quiróz and asked him if he had any information. He told him not yet, and told him that his actions the previous day could have delayed the process. Gustavo said he new about protocols but in this case it enabled the criminals' escape. He told them to do their jobs effectively. Quiróz could see that Gustavo was agitated and would not listen to reason. He did not show frustration until Gustavo was out the door.

Sofia handed Alejandra the same file she had shown to the chief of police and updated her on the filings. She left her alone to study them.

Raquel arrived at her sister's home and rang the doorbell. There was no reply.

She took out her cell to call, finally calling Julio. She told him his mother had not answered the door and she was concerned. He told her he would let her in.

Ricardo went to Alejandra's office upon his return from the airport. He explained how difficult it was for him to let go of his children but that he had to in the name of their safety.
They held hands over their mutual anxieties. She told him that he made the best decision for his children and that when the criminals are caught things would go back to normal. They went to her desk to go over the file from Sofia.

Raquel entered her sister's house, accompanied by Julio.
She stopped still as they found her hanging. She cried out “No, No! Sister!”
Julio hugged her, but the look on his face was not one of anguish.
He knelt below his mother's body and hugged her legs. He started crying as Raquel made a phone call. She ended the call and went over to him. He began yelling “It's my fault! Leave me alone! It's my fault!”
Raquel knelt behind him.

A suicide after a loss of a husband is not entirely unusual, but something is rotten in this household. And it's nothing that was on the breakfast table.

Oh, no. It's more likely someone that sat at the breakfast table.

Roberto and Victoria continued to disagree about Sofia's comment. She continued to deny that they were a couple, finally saying they can't be because they work together.

I'm wondering if Victoria is the one in denial.

Christopher, I totally agree.

Alonso and Alejandra talked about her father; both were pleased that he was coming to the firm upon recovery. Carmen entered with a bouquet and a bottle of something expensive and a note from Leonardo and Olivia. She had spoken to them recently and they said they would love to return but were concerned about recent events.

Julio and Raquel watched as the coroner's team zipped his mother's body into a bag and removed it from the house. Both were crying.
The detective told them that the body would be autopsied before being released to the family. It was procedure.
They also were told that they would need to come to the police station to give statements about how they found the body and when they had last seen Ariadna alive. Julio walked away from them, saying he didn't want to go. Raquel asked the detective whether this could be done then and there and he said that they both needed to come to the station.
Raquel went to Julio and told her she would be with him all through this. The detective advised that they speak with a lawyer. He then took his leave.

This detective should have insisted that they accompany him to the station immediately.

Yes. As cruel as that sounds, he should also have the instinct to know that something is really not normal here.

Gustavo slapped the daily newspaper on Alonso's desk in anger. Alonso told him that the entire country is waiting for Dorantes to be captured. He also told him he needed to keep a cool head.

Carmen escorted Raquel Campos into Roberto's office. She described the murder of her brother-in-law and told Roberto and Juan that her sister, unable to endure the grief, committed suicide.
Roberto told her to be calm and Juan asked about the attack. She said that she heard there had been two men. Julio had been a witness. She begged for their help, saying she was desperate. Roberto said she could count on this.

Jacinto Dorantes ranted on his phone to someone, saying he had to get him out of the country. They were approaching a checkpoint. There were armed federales waiting. Dorantes demanded that his driver floor the accelorater, but he could not; there appeared to be an accident scene ahead, then he saw the armed police.
The windows were rolled down and the police ordered Dorantes to surrender. He suggested they settle this differently and one asked what he meant. This was meant to get him to admit bribery and it succeeded. The policeman said that this was another crime he could be charged with.
Dorantes exited the car at gunpoint and saw them cuff his driver as he was being frisked. The lead officer called in the arrest. They read the charges and his rights and hustled him into the back of the police car in the usual manner.

Roberto and Juan explained the next steps to Raquel. She had to authorize an investigation. She said she would sign anything necessary but begged them to not allow this case to go cold. Juan promised that they would take care of this and press for the arrest warrant when they had a suspect. Roberto then told her they needed to talk to her nephew. She told them he was in bad shape at the moment and won't even leave the house. She would talk to him first. Roberto said that would be alright. She left them to contemplate the tragedy.
Roberto said that the next step was to talk to Julio, who witnessed the fatal attack. They would also need all the autopsy report on his mother, Ariadne. Juan still had friends in the department so he said he would pay them a visit in the morning. Carmen then stopped by to tell them they were expected in the conference room.

Alan showed Carlos the company's bank balance and it was not enough money to pay back El Ciego. He said they would need more cases, urgent ones from people with money. Alan didn't want to be in debt forever to El Ciego, so
Carlos said they needed cases, including controversial ones.

Alonso announced at the meeting that Dorantes had been caught and had the gall to try to bribe his way to freedom. Their next move was to draw up all the arguments for detaining him. He delegated the parts of the assignment, declaring that they would see this man rot in prison.
A woman named Miriam and her two children arrived at her brother's home, fleeing her abusive husband.

A man – possibly a lawyer – who worked for Jacinto Dorantes arrived in Carlos' office to ask that he represent his boss. Carlos told him that based on what he knew of the case, it would not be easy.
The flunky put a check on the desk, saying to fill in whatever it would take. He would have more once his boss was free. Dorantes had specifically asked for Carlos, saying that he would understand why. Carlos asked what he meant and the man answered “Everyone knows of your rivalry with the Vega firm.” When Carlos acknowledged that he asked “Do you accept?” Carlos asked to review the case first to see whether it was viable. The man took out a thick file and left it on the desk. “I'll review it and contact you,” Carlos said. “I'll expect your answer as soon as possible.” Carlos made a polite response and the man left,
just passing Alan on the way out. Carlos told Alan this was an employee of Jacinto Dorantes wanting Carlos to represent him. Alan thought this was great news, as it would get them out of debt. Carlos told him he couldn't do it because of Alejandra. He named the charges he knew about and said that Dorantes had to have been behind everything else. He insisted that they needed another way to get out of this debt. Alan picked up the check. “A blank check?”

One has to admire Carlos' poker face during that meeting.

Except that there is no escape route for him now.

Dorantes was brought into the station. Quiróz was waiting. When Dorantes mocked the system and tried to bribe him he ordered the men to put him in his cage. The arresting officer obeyed and locked the door.
Quiróz checked the lock, then asked how much he would offer as a bribe. Dorantes answered it would be whatever it took to get him out.
“Like every other one like you,” Quiróz said.
“Because if you do anything against me, you will pay.”
“Like the family of Gustavo Soto?”
"I don't know what you're talking about."
“If you want to get out of here soon, you'd better cooperate with all the information we need.”
“When I get out I will do everything to be sure you lose your job.”
They stared at each other.

Alan told Carlos to think about it. Carlos still refused, on the grounds that doint this would forever ruin his chances of getting back together with Alejandra. Alan tried to persuade him to tell Alejandra that he is doing this to get more information. Carlos still said no, as it was too risky. Alan held up the check, telling him that this check could solve all the firm's problems.
Carlos told him, “Alright. I will tell Dorantes tomorrow.”

Alonso went to see Dorantes, who said he was going to get out.
“Over my dead body.”
“That could be arranged.”
“No; you have fallen. You are responsible for it all: The kidnapping of Jaime, the attempt on my life, and the killing of Gustavo's family.”
“You are mad. I had nothing to do with any of it. But if I were you I'd get out of here and find the end of the world because when I get out of here, you will pay.”

Alonso reached through the bars and seized Dorantes by the collar.
“My lawyers are my family. The most important things in my life and they will make you pay for everything you've done.” He yanked him into the bars, causing some pain. “We won't stop until you are rotting in prison.”
They glared at each other.

Jacinto Dorantes is finally behind bars. But does he have friends at this station? Is Raúl Quiróz corrupt or was he playing a mind game on Dorantes? We need more information and observation. The Vega lawyers are still not safe.

That's right, Candace. And what about young Julio Cervantes? He and his girlfriend both looked guilty and what could be his motive? What dirty linen will be found or is it just garden variety greed? Either way, Julio seems likely to crack with very little pressure. Until next we meet Behind the Walls of Justice, I'm Christopher Mason.

Comments:
Raquel has made the assumption about suicide based on two things:

-- Ariadna's state of despair
-- Raquel's inability to believe that Julio and/or his girlfriend (name still undisclosed) would be capable of committing this crime.

The latter would not have even occurred to her. However, when the police have a go at Julio he just might crack. We may see him in a giggle jacket before too much time passes.

I do wonder why there were so many facial expressions, etc., from them. Could the director be thinking that we'd miss half of them?

Thanks for getting this up so quickly, Urban! Wednesday Addams, ha ha. Now I won't be able to call her anything else (although my Spanish subtitles say her name is Eva. Hmmm...Eve with the snake?)

Nice hand-holding pic of Ric & Ale. Is their relationship still on hold? I can't remember.

I'm glad we're getting some cases again. And hasta la vista to the two overgrown toddlers, who haven't forgotten anything they learned last season about ugly crying.

P.S. Mom looked suspiciously un-swollen and un-purple when she was zipped into the body bag, but that was probably just typical Televisa sloppiness and not a clue.

I don't use the subtitles, but thanks, Blue Lass. I hate going through more than a single episode without knowing a character's name.

At least Julio wasn't named "Adam".

I have been wondering since the opening episode whether the writers have retconned the romance of Alejandra and Ricardo. Whatever they do I hope they don't end up putting her back with Carlos, who will now have more trouble than he ever bargained for. I also wonder how long it will take before he knows that Alan killed Patricia.

What concerns me most at the moment is what to expect from Raul. Up until his last scene last night he seemed free from corruption. He didn't need to use entrapment to get Dorantes to commit another attempt because the charge was already there. At any rate I hope this question is answered soon.

Such fun Urban, like reading a graphic novel...not that I do. But all the pictures and commentary add so much to the recap. Getting quite fond of the acerbic Candace and her jaded observations...

Wednesday Addams couldn't have looked any creepier.

Without a doubt. And this actor is well chosen for the role. Could anybody possibly look any less wholesome or straightforward? Major ugh factor, although I love the actress playing the part of Tia Raquel.

I'm going to vote that our Quiróz is on the up and up but then I'm a sucker for a pretty face. And speaking of being a sucker, I was even thinking "Wouldn't it be nice if Alejandra's mom and dad got back together again?" Yeah, I know...HOPELESS!

Thanks again Urban. A treat to read as always.

Judy, I'll sit at the Jaime/Paula table! They have a better relationship as exes than anyone else has had as lovers or spouses...

Thanks Blue Lass, didn't want to be the only sentimentalist sitting all by myself! (hmmm now that dang song is running through my head).

Urban--
Yes, to JudyB's comparison to a graphic novel (not that I read any either). Superb back and forth between our observers. I noted that Christopher is still wearing a GREEN bow tie. Thank you for everything.

BTW, that American guy bringing in Miriam's and her kids' suitcases WAS the abusive husband. She told her brother that though she wanted to come alone, he has such control over her life she can't go anywhere alone. Wonder where she met him. At first I thought it was Ricardo's kids, until I realized the girl had very dark hair and so did the mother. So now, I'm wondering if they are being set up to be friends with Ricardo's kids.

I just don't understand Carlos. I think Alejandra is waiting for Ricardo to give her a signal that his reconciliation with Elena isn't working, even for the sake of the half-grown toddlers. He's waiting for a signal from Alejandra that she's ready to open up to him again. I'm sure Carlos will do everything he can for that not to happen.

I do like Quiroz. Hope he stays clean and straight--unless it's to catch somebody and we know the writers don't tell us that.

Niecie--Blue Lass and I are working out a schedule for a lot, but not all Fridays. It is going to be going strong during the summer. Why don't you try your hand? We'll make room for you, even if it's just to give Urban a rest once or twice a month. It doesn't have to be detailed or full of screen shots. Bullet points will do. 'Cmon--I know you can do a great job.

Forgot to add that I agree, Jaime/Paula would be happy back together. Each in their own way needs the other. But, didn't Paula boast at the very beginning of Season I that she had a boyfriend who took her places? One we never met.

Oh right; I forgot about Paula's imaginary boyfriend. NO ONE has ever seen him, not even other characters on the show.

That could be a dropped ball.

I realize now that this is the abusive husband. I think this is the case that will bring them to the US.

Niecie,we'd love for you to join us!

Thanks, Urban. Terrific job.

How in heck would Carlos be able to justify to Ali taking Dorante's case? Don't know but I'd like to see him try just for the fun of it. Ali has been pretty gullible with him.

I'm flattered to be asked to recap, but I'm so slow. But I will add bullets when I can.

Thank you, Urban, for another superb recap. I don't know how you do it so well every single day, must be magic.
The line comparing that girl to Wednesday Adams was spot on. She does look creepy here. By the way, I don't know how old the actress really is, but she is currently playing a very nerdy teenager on Tenias que ser tu.
Again, I have to regretfully note that agent Quiros' hotness is paired with a pea-sized brain and I just can't find him attractive because of it. I already had strong suspicion that he is not the sharpest tool in the shed when, in the first episode, he was standing around chitchatting while huge amount of wounded were lying bleeding out all around him, and this suspicion became certainty in this episode. As much as I hate Gustavo, i found Quiros' berating him about almost ruining the operation absurd beyond words. He should be berating himself for being dumb enough not to understand that distraught civilians whose families were murdered tend to do irrational things such as running into the line of fire without thinking about the consequences and it is his job as a policemen to foresee such situations and to (easily) prevent them by cordoning off the site of the operation, establishing a perimeter and generally paying attention to what is going on around him.

Irene

Irene, the only reason I've been able to do this is because I'm retired. I have to cut back on the number of screen-grabs because that adds another hour to the process. That's why I'm not doing a better literary job with this one.

Blame the writers for what's going on on the screen. I know that Televisa and other production companies are aware of this blog so we need to provide constructive criticism of things like this. They should care about what we think of the characters in these stories because I think that many series lose viewers if their characters aren't at all likable or worthy of respect.

And by the way,Dorantes isn't very endowed in the brains department either. Why on earth would he stick around for weeks after the events of last season, risking getting caught, when he could have gone abroad while nobody was looking for him yet He could have easily supervised his revengenda from abroad. But no, he just had to stick around until the last possible minute, and only make plans to escape when it's already too late.I really don't know how he managed to successfully lead a criminal organization for so many years!

I just had to open my big mouth and say that Alonso is not prosecuting his shooter and now the entire bufete became a fiscalia! Damn it, writers, i had such high hopes for this season! The way it looks, Al will be prosecuting his own shooters before my urgently ordered titanium-reinforced beanie arrives.

Irene

Urban, i don't think I would have managed to write such detailed recaps every single day even if I were retired. You have a special talent that not many people have. And please don't feel bad that you have to cut down on the screen grabs. With your workload, I am amazed that you manage to add screen grabs at all. And they are all so carefully chosen and fit the narrative so well.

I honestly don't know what the writers are thinking. Almost all of the characters are unlikable, dumb and unprofessional. The villains are one-dimensional, have no motivation other that they are criminals and in addition also have half a brain cell between the three of them and keep winning due to pure luck.

Oh well, at least there were some positive changes in the wardrobe department although whoever dressed Elena in that green jacket with that parrot-colored scarf needs to find a new profession.

Irene

Irene—I’m glad you are with us on this one. You cover the deepest, darkest faux-pas ever on screen. I love your new word, “revengenda.” That’s what Leon/Chino was doing on AAM. He just didn’t know it.

The only series I ever did this many screen grabs for before was Mi Corazon es Tuyo. That was about the slapstick and the reactions; I did over 100 for one episode. Also, the mischievous twins were adorable and looked so much like their screen dad.

What bugs me in general about novelas lately -- all of them -- is the ridiculously short scenes. This series is formatted like other TV programs about lawyers and a little harder to join scene fragments together than the ones I've managed to do a better literary job on.

What I need to do is to limit screen grabs to the most important ones, like the facial expressions on Julio and Eva in this episode.

BTW, I have to go out at 7 so this one will be a bit late tonight, maybe not until morning.

Thanks Anita,I am glad to be here.Thought every single episode of this season of PASL requires a triple beanie to keep my remaining couple of brain cells alive, this lovely patio keeps me from quitting. And some day scientists will find a way to regenerate brain cells, right?

Irene

Urban, very good. Very very good. That
Little troll killed his parents, well
He either did it or his girlfriend.
What a creepy couple.

I really hope quiroz isn't a dirty cop.
I remember when the bad guys weren't as attractive as the good guys. Now some of them look even better. Looks aren't Every thing. I just liked it better when the bad guys were ugly, lol
That way you could tell them apart. Silly me. I just think evil should look ugly. Quiroz is an attractive man, I hope he's not a crook. Or he'd just be another good lookin crook, like
Carlos.

"Wednesday Adam's couldn't have looked creepier". Wednesday adams was cute creepy, this chick is evil creepy. Her
And the boyfriend from purgatory.

Carlos needs money and he needs it now. He May fold and take the case. He
Will. He's obbessessed with alejandra.
And He's obbessessed with money. And He's gonna fall.Probly from the money.
This seems to get better with each episode.
And they caught durantes,I hope he stays Got without crooked cop interference.

Thank you Urban. I appreciate you recapping this show.

Nina—The narco-cartel bad guys still look pretty mean. After all, many of them don’t last the whole run and they need the money as much as the good-looking ones, who are educated, professionals caught up in white collar crimes.

Victoria and Roberto? She teases..never pleases. Tagging him along every time.....getting old ,this femme fatale teasing..Meh..
