Por Amar Sin Ley, Season 2 Miercoles 4/10/19, Episode 21: True Lies

Damián shook hands with the two young entrepreneurs who then left Carlos' office. He then shook hands with Alan for his coup at having brought the company to him at a lower price than he had originally intended to pay. He then decided to retain the firm as is corporate counsel.

Ricardo brought up that this entire matter ruined his client's life. When he accused Mónica of luring Rafael into committing the crime by posing as the doctor's abused wife she denied it again. She told him he had no proof. He said, “Very well. It will be your word against Rafael's.”

Alejandra brought the video to Inspector Quiróz and pointed out that this car was the same as the one identified in the photos relating to the murder of Gustavo's family. He cautioned her not to discuss this with anyone and warned her that her involvement is dangerous.

Gustavo's realtor showed the house to a family with a son the same age as Luis had been. The boy noticed the toys in the house. The boy's mother loved the kitchen and the father then decided that they would buy the house.

Carlos got to the office to get the good news about their new client. Not only had he brought the purchase in at twenty percent less than originally estimated, but they would get a commission and the contract for Damián's corporate legal services. He estimated that within a few months they could pay off half of what Carlos owed to El Ciego. Carlos was very pleased at this news. So pleased that he decided to increase Alan's percentage of the profits and get new office space, which would also have Alan's name on the door next to his.

Alejandra and Ricardo talked on the phone before turning in. (No new information.)

Juan told Fernanda and Susanna he was a bit nervous about court the next day. He knew that there was no way their client wouldn't be going to prison. Both Fernanda and Susanna pointed out that Mónica took advantage of Rafael's feelings to get him to do the crime. He knew that they were right but was still swayed by Mónica's apparent motive.

Gustavo began packing up the personal effects of Isabel and Luis with their voices echoing in his head. He cried.

Carlos visited Alejandra at home to tell him the good news about his firm. This meant that he would needed more partners. He invited her to join his firm.

Nicolás and Astrid talked about her trip. She was going to stay with her brother for awhile because he is alone in the world. However, she didn't like leaving Nicolás because he gave her back a sense of joie de vivre. She said she would call him every time she could. There was a knock at the door and the others came in to party.

Alejandra turned Carlos down. She was happy with her situation and her colleagues. He said he could pay her much more dinero, but she still refused his offer. He asked if there was another reason and she told him that she and Ricardo were a couple and she didn't want to be separated from him. She loved him. She loved him because he is a man who can make her happy. Carlos tried pressing for more of an explanation. She finally had to tell him that she had thought once that she loved him but the night of his bachelor party ended that. Ricardo had nothing to do with that. The incident with Patricia showed her that he (Carlos) was capable of hiding things from her that she might never find out about. He went on about wanting to help her in her career and that he wanted her to be happy. She subtly rolled her eyes and said she would consider it but would not promise him anything. She said he would pay back the money she borrowed and he said he needed to go home and sleep. He kissed her goodbye and left.

Adrián was downing an nth cup of coffee watching security videos of Rafael's store when Manuel stopped in on his way out. He asked if he could help and Adrián gave him instructions to watch some videos to look for interactions between Mónica and Rafael. He showed him Rafael's mug shot and Manuel ran for his laptop.

Alejandra called Victoria and told her about what had just happened with Carlos. She seemed to realize that Carlos was trying to undermine her relationship with Ricardo and that he didn't want to know that he would never get her back. She asked Victoria how she was and Victoria replied that she was still angry and sad but that whatever it took she would get over it. “It wasn't the first time, but it will be the last. I will never trust anyone again.” Alejandra offered to come over so they could talk about it, but Victoria said No thanks; she didn't want to talk about this. She would get over it and not let this happen again.

Roberto went back to his favorite watering hole where a journalist began flirting with him. He seemed to be enjoying himself. She boasted of being a good baker, especially of cakes. He said he wanted to know which was sweeter, the cakes or her kisses. She proceeded to demonstrate the latter. Somewhere in the midst of which he appeared distracted. She asked whether anything was wrong and he said, “No, nothing” and resumed returning her kisses.

In contrast, Carlos poured himself a drink at home. He was interrupted by a knock which was that of his least favorite client, El Ciego, who noticed that something was wrong. “I've had a bad day. Lots of work.” El Ciego laughed and said “I brought you more” and his new goon tossed in a bag with the usual contents. El Ciego stepped inside and asked what it was and he said “Just a personal problem.” Carlos wasn't really interested in talking about it. El Ciego poured himself a drink and said he could help. Carlos said “I don't mean to be ungrateful but it's not necessary.” “Think about it,” said El Ciego. “There are always ways to rid ourselves of people who cause problems. And I know how to do it.” Carlos looked at him intently.

Roberto seemed to remember who he was, then not. He then suggested they go elsewhere. He settled the bar bill and took the lady back to his place and began shedding clothes en route to the bed. [I expect there was a little visual censorship here.]

Adrián looked at his watch as he yawned, commenting on the lateness of the hour. He looked back at his screen and saw the first encounter between Mónica and Rafael. Manuel looked at it over his shoulder and then Adrián told him they needed to find something that showed more interaction. Adrián made note of the date and time.

The following morning Roberto dressed for work and looked back at the sleeping woman in his bed. He woke her up and she tried to persuade him to come back for another round. He told her he liked the idea but he had to get to work early. He gave her a kiss, told her to make herself some breakfast, and left. But there was no laughter in his voice or his manner. This was not the Don Giovanni Roberto of some months ago.

Roberto gave his opening statement in Rafael and Mónica's trial. He explained that Rafael came to the firm and confessed to the murder. Also stating that Mónica had come to him saying she was the doctor's wife and that he had abused her. She had said he was violent and that the only way for them to be together would be if her husband died. Mónica began denying this and the judge rapped her gavel, telling her that she would have a chance to talk later. Sonia spoke next, stating that Mónica had lost a malpractice lawsuit she had brought against the victim. The statement of Rafael Olmos had a description of Mónica and that this was of importance in this case. Mónica continued to deny having done anything. Her lawyer tried to get her to stop but she would not, saying that court was worthless. She accused lawyers of only taking her money and not giving her the justice she deserved. The Vega lawyers stared at her for a moment as she continued crying for her audience.

Carlos was in a bad mood when he got to the office. He was short with his secretary and with Nancy. She recognized when to retreat and did so.

Sonia started by saying to Mónica that while what happened to her son was lamentable, they were there because of the homicide she planned in revenge. Again, Mónica denied having done this and denied knowing Rafael. He asked her why she was saying that, telling the court that yes, they knew each other. Adrián stood up with an envelope in hand, saying that Mónica was lying and that he had videos to prove it. He slipped the flash drive into the computer and the judge asked to see it. He played the first video on the monitor, then the second. Mónica's lawyer said that this proved nothing; they only showed him as a store employee helping a customer. Adrián ignored him and turned to Mónica, asking her if any more happened between her and Rafael. She said No and he asked “Are you sure?” She did not answer and, in fact, looked afraid. Adrián produced a disc that showed Mónica in the hotel lobby with Rafael. They were kissing before going up the stairs to their trysting room. That forced the admission of their relationship out of her but she denied asking him to kill anyone. Ricardo asked that Rafael be sworn in. After he was Ricardo questioned him about their relationship [I will spare you the repeat of the details]. Mónica told him to stop lying and he said he was not. He told her he had loved her [past tense] and destroyed his life for her. And she was denying everything. “I killed because I thought I was protecting you. My only mistake was loving you.”

She looked as though she were made of stone ...and her eyes were dry.

Alejandra gave the file to Dr Moises, who told her that Ivan would need physical therapy at least three times per week and that he would need to be monitored constantly by three additional specialists. Alejandra explained the complication that his mother is in jail pending sentencing for murder.

Mónica went for her Academy Award denying that she had supplied the weapon and had never seen it. She continued to deny having had anything to do with the murder. Adrián pointed out the motive. She said that this did not mean she did the crime. Adrián said that she had taken the time to plan it. And part of that plan was to impersonate the wife of the victim. She began accusing Juan of trapping her by pretending to be an accounting client. More denial and histrionics.

Dr Moises explained that Ivan needed to be in a facility where all these treatments can be done and he knew of one. Alejandra said that since the mother didn't have the money to pay she could get the funds from a foundation. The doctor said he would take him on as a patient without compensation but Alejandra was in charge of the rest. He told her that all would be well.

Closing arguments were very short. Sonia stated that her investigation indemnified both defendants. Roberto stated that his client had been manipulated and had not acted alone. Mónica's lawyer stated that she did nothing and should not pay for Rafael's crime. The judge didn't even declare a recess. She pronounced both defendants guilty. Mónica became histrionically hysterical. The judge sentenced Rafael to twenty years as the actor of the crime while she gave Mónica twenty-four years as the mastermind.

There were some twists and turns in this episode it would have been tough to get were it not for this excellent, thorough recap! Thank you. So good.
A reality check on Mexico's legal procedures might be helpful at this point. The evidence against MoniCA was mostly circumstantial, although she did perjure herself about knowing Rafael. And she gets MORE time than Rafael who confessed to committing the crime. And if Rafael loves her so, how could he persist in a narrative that condemns her? Something's fishy. The crime here is keeping that child from his mother. I'm surprised at all the lawyers representing Rafael with no concern about the fate of Monica.

Also, isn't Ricardo's separation from his wife and family temporary? He's still married, yes? Are the kids returning with the wife? Seems silly for all the long term plans with Alejandra.

Roberto returns to his old ways? Ick

Carlos, El Ciego, etc. etc.....guess they're the guts of the story so no getting rid of them anytime soon.

Dona: Never a big fan of Robert anyway. Once a dog, always a dog.

Bienvenido, Dona Felipa.

Ricardo filed for divorce in the opening episode of Season 1, so he has been divorced for however much time has actually transpired since. Earlier this season there was a hint that Elena was thinking of making this move permanent.

The one thing about the Mexican legal procedures that bothered me is that Monica doesn't appear to have been given the additional charge of perjury. In the US that would add time to her sentence. As to Rafael, he has finally gotten the realization that Monica used him. After the murder she didn't return his calls or answer his text messages.

As for separating her from her son, I have been wondering whether she is a Munchhausen by Proxy case. She barely appears to have been reassured that he will be in good hands. I've been wondering whether she made Ivan sick for the usual reasons in these cases -- getting attention for herself as a maternal martyr -- and that it backfired. The boy's facial expressions were telling me that something is very fishy here. If we get an update about his treatment, we may find out that she had been keeping him incapacitated, which would add more time to her sentence.

She cold-bloodedly planned the murder of Dr Lara and used Rafael to be her weapon hand and for that she deserves the sentence she got. Her mistake in this plan was in not considering the possibility that Rafael would have a conscience about his actions. He did, and that is why she isn't getting away with this.

We had to expect Roberto to backslide, but that isn't going to make him happy.

As for Carlos, there is still a lot of unfinished business. Alan was Patricia's murderer, which he still doesn't know. I suspect he won't know until the end of this season; I hope that doesn't get carried over into a third season. His attempt at getting Alejandra to join his firm is another attempt at controlling her, which he will no longer be able to do. It would be a truly bone-headed move because she would potentially find out about El Ciego and fall into danger if things go south between him and Carlos. Nancy has only been there a couple of days and she is already on the brink of finding out about him.

Thanks Urban!

I almost felt like going all Tyra Banks on Roberto (“I was rooting for you!”). He seemed to really try to change for Victoria when she saw him with the other woman but didn’t see him send that woman home by herself but now is just back to his old ways. After all, he did betray Leo in part 1.

Would be interesting to see if there’s a follow up on Ivan’s health conditions. The outcome of the case was fair. Monica only thought about herself.

So appreciate your responses and Urban, you filled alot of holes in my understanding of all that's transpired. Wow...Munchhausen! Never would have thought of that. Again, thanks.

When I recap I usually watch the episodes twice. I scrutinize actors for facial expressions, especially if they aren't talking. Ivan could be a victim here.

Thanks Urban. Again I forgot to record. You cracked me up with "histrionically hysterical" and this:

Mónica went for her Academy Award denying that she had supplied the weapon and had never seen it.

Sorry I missed that very dramatic scene, but happy I missed Roberto going back to his old behavior. Vicky Vicky Vicky! Too bad.....

Thanks, Urban. Always entertaining reading your recaps.

In reality it would be tough finding a good place for Ivan to get care for his complicated health problems. But this is TN land so Ale and the doc have it all sorted out. Too bad Monica didn't seek out Vega in the first place instead of going for revenge that did her kid no good. Hope he meets other kids where he's going and finally has a life.

I like Roberto but he really is a bad prospect for a woman with (well-earned) trust issues. So quick to fall back on his old ways when the going got rough. Even Carlos is better prospect right now. He's being true to his ex and ignoring Nancy's encantos.

I think Carlos may also have a Madonna/Whore complex. In contrasting these two women Alejandra is the Virgin Mary and Nancy is Jezebel.

Urban, I too laughed out loud at "histrionically hysterical." And I love the Munchausen-by-proxy angle, but experience tells me that our imaginations range much more widely than the writers'. Sigh.
