I'm
Christopher Mason. I'm not a lawyer but I've known many, especially
in New York. The court systems move in mysterious ways and most
people don't seem to know that things don't happen as quickly as they
seem on television legal dramas. This is not always a bad thing
although it is supremely frustrating.
I'm
Candice DeLong. I've worked in law enforcement and I get impatient
with the legal system when there are criminals who deserve every
punishment the courts can deal out. But it does sometimes have
detours.
New
York:
A
assistant DA demanded to see Adrián's license. He showed it and
stated the reason for the chrges. The assistant DA said Cristina
would have to make a formal statement. Adrián then said they were
ready to proceed.
Mexico:
El
Gringo and Michelle discussed the situation. El Chivo seems to have
told them everything., including Carlos' name. She told him to leave
it to her. “Leave it to me. This lawyer will not be a problem.”
He wasn't eager at first until she explained that El Ciego is very
powerful in that area. She would take care of the lawyer while El
Chivo worked from within. He agreed.
New
York:
Cristina
told the whole story and the assistant DA said that he'd seen many
women sue Wall Street men for money. He needed proof. Her text
messages would not be enough; he wanted witnesses and colleagues who
could back her up or he could not proceed with a warrant. Adrián
said they'd have it.
As they left the building Adrián and Sofia
asked about witnesses. Trevor was mentioned but Adrián sensed that
he was Blums' accomplice. Cristina mentioned Sharon, whom she told
everything to as it happened.
Mexico:
Ricardo
and Lorena came back to the office to tell Victoria about Fanny's
case. They were concerned about the daughter and didn't want her to
have to live with her grandmother. Lorena offered to do the
paperwork so Ricardo could spend the afternoon with his children.
New
York:
Adrián,
Sofia, and Cristina went to the Blums' office building where Cristina
met Sharon on the ground floor. Sharon was afraid they would be seen
together because she could end up getting terminated. Cristina told
her she was filing a suit against Blums and needed her to be a
witness. Sharon said to meet her at the coffee shop in five minutes.
Mexico:
Gustavo
stopped by Roberto's office to ask about Carlos. Whether Roberto had
noticed anything suspicious during his defense of him. Roberto said
no, other than that Carlos was unbearable. So was his cousin. They
could find no reason for Carlos to have been at the restaurant the
night of the shooting other than Alejandra. Carlos knew that the
engagement was going to happen.
Ricardo
took the children to the aquarium and later to the park.
Tatiana
called Juan to thank him on her first day of work at the police
station. She was her usual over-effusive self asking how he was. He
did sound less than cheerful and she suggested they see each other
later. He hesitated but finally said eight o'clock.
At
least she knew how to dress for office work.
New
York:
Since
the coffee shop was crowded they met outside. Sharon was afraid to
testify because she didn't want to lose her job. Sofia reminded her
that there were many women with the same fear and this would not stop
until someone spoke up. They said they could arrange witness
protection for her. She still refused and walked away. Cristina was
upset, but she was afraid this would happen. Sofia and Adrián told
her they would not give up. They were aware that she had much more
to lose than they. At that moment a threatening message from Trevor
arrived on Cristina's phone. She read it to them. It wasn't proof,
but another new element to their case. This was proof of Blums'
fear.
Mexico:
Juan
showed Tatiana his car; she was impressed. He told her about the
vandalism and she told him the same thing others did, which is that
he shouldn't park it in the street. They got in and drove off.
Ricardo
brought the kids home and Lorena called to let him know she finished
the paperwork. He told her to go home and rest and they would review
it in the morning.
Juan
took Tatiana to an upscale restaurant and he asked about her first
day at work. She said it was hard because she didn't understand a
lot of things but she felt closer to him for working at something
related to his work. She knew she still had a lot to learn but
appreciated it. This led to her flirting with him. Over red wine a
little later he said Fernanda was very important to him so he was sad
about it. He liked that she was distracting him from this. Then she
used one of Nancy's lines.
As
Lorena was packing up for the night Manuel found her in the library.
She told him about the case and how exciting it was and... how much
she admired Ricardo, saying he is the best lawyer she has ever met.
I
guess that answered the question in Manuel's mind. All men like to
know who their competition is.
Roberto
and Nicolás unpacked a food delivery and the conversation went back
to Victoria. Nicolás suggested another day with the kids, but
Roberto told him they leave in the morning. He then called Gustavo.
El
Chivo came back to El Ciego's hideout claiming to know where El
Gringo was. He collected more cash from him.
Was
he a double agent? Because I don't think he was smart enough to pull
that off.
New
York:
One
of Blums' lawyers went to the same assistant DA and handed him
information about a large company that had been evading taxes. The
intent clearly was to get him off the Valereo case.
Mexico:
Fernanda
saw Juan as she left for work. She wanted to talk to him. She felt
he didn't understand that she wanted the app back because of the work
she did and thus didn't value her work. He said that she didn't
value his. He did everything he was capable of under the
circumstances. He reminded her that she made the decision to break
up, not he. He went to his car, looking sad.
New
York:
The
assistant DA made a phone call in which he told his superiors that
Blums gave him this information so he would drop the case against
him. He said he didn't have adequate evidence to proceed with the
harassment case. He hung up the phone as Adrián and Sofia entered
his office to tell him they needed more time. Their witnesses were
afraid to talk. Then Adrián showed him Trevor's text message. The
ADA told him he could not go to a judge without more proof. Also
that Blums' lawyers had already been in his office saying that their
boss never said the things he was accused of saying. Sofia got angry
and was scolded for it. When the man said that Blums is cooperating
by presenting information about another case Adrián said he saw what
Blums was doing. This got under the man's skin and he said he was
going to dismiss the case. Adrián and Sofia walked out but not
before she said that this was not over yet.
It
wouldn't surprise me if this man was guilty of harassment himself.
He obviously was not happy that Sofia called him out.
Mexico:
Ricardo
and the kids got ready to go to the airport; the kids didn't want to
leave. Ricardo told them he would visit them in Canada as soon as he
could. He hugged and kissed them and they left for the airport.
Fernanda
knocked on Susanna's door, upset. Susanna gave her the same advice
Nicolás gave Roberto. Fernanda told her that no matter what
happened with Juan, she loved her.
El
Ciego went to Carlos' apartment and said he had information. Carlos
was impatient and El Ciego told him that they were gone. They had
gone to El Norte and he did not know where. Carlos was adamant that
he had to find them and make them pay. El Ciego said he had to move
his people, arms, and everything. Carlos told him he would take care
of any legal issues. He said they killed the person he loved most in
the world and he would do what it took. El Ciego said they had the
same enemy for the same reasons. Carlos said they needed a police
insider for other information. El Ciego liked that. He then said
that getting his rival will be satisfying. He also advised Carlos
that he will need a very cold head to enjoy his rival's demise.
Now
Carlos was firmly on the dark side. His problem was that he refused
to face it.
New
York:
Adrián
and Sofia had to give Cristina the bad news. While the message
looked like a clear threat, the DA didn't accept it. He was
protecting Blums. Cristina went on about him being too powerful
[Author's note: I will definitely be throwing things at walls if
I hear that one more time.] Sofia told her that they can't give
up now. They had to find another way to get to them. Sofia called
Alonso and explained the problem. When she got off the phone she
told her she had to be patient. They knew this would not be easy but
they would make Blums pay for his actions.
Mexico:
Ricardo
was about to pour himself a glass of water when his doorbel rang. He
opened the door and asked “What are you doing here?”
Carlos
may have thought he was getting justice for Alejandra, but he was
crossing the line. He never gave a thought to the fact that he was
planning on breaking the law or what happens to lawyers who do.
Indeed.
That was about as big an expression of hubris any man could be
guilty of, and Harry Blums is another great example. Who knows how
many years he's gotten away with stealing the integrity of women in
his company? It's likely that his batallion of lawyers are equally
guilty and the lot of them are the latter-day Hellfire Club.
However, the modern world will not tolerate that for long. It will
be amusing to watch his fall. Until next we meet Behind the Walls of
Justice, I'm Christopher Mason.
