Por Amar Sin Ley, Season 2 Miercoles 5/22/19 Episode 49: Gathering Forces

Scenes combined where it made sense to do so.

Mexico:

Gustavo, Roberto, and Victoria came to hang out with Ricardo to keep up his spirits so they could all continue the fight. Roberto brought some wine and opened it. They drank to their future.

Lorena and Manuel were working the next morning to the library. Ricardo came in to get Lorena to review the paperwork. Manuel wanted to make sure she was available later.

Roberto still tried to explain the misunderstanding but Victoria was still unwilling to listen. No matter how many attempts he made at it she said that they should go back to where they were before, colleagues and nothing more. He almost begged and she told him to leave her office.

Juan was looking into real estate. The neighborhood he was thinking of was given a good review by Gustavo, who came into his office to talk about Carlos. He asked whether he had found or heard anything our of the ordinary. He had doubted Carlos' innocence mostly because of his manner. Once he was out of jail he started the foundation for abused women, as though he was attempting to wash away guilt. Then there was the ADA, Sonia, who never trusted Carlos.

Carlos tried to place a call and may have not gotten an answer. He called Nancy into his office to tell her he needed whatever other information that could be gotten from police contacts because of El Gringo's wearabouts. He was agitated and needed to know. Nancy moved in on his space, saying she would be there to make him feel better. He grabbed and kissed her back before she returned inside.

Ricardo and Lorena talked about Fanny's case and Ricardo told her about what Elena did during their divorce. This sort of situation is the reason he specialized in Family Law. Lorena had not known any of this before and her manner seems to indicate she has a thing for him.

Josefina, an old friend of Alonso's, came to the office. She has a problem in the family business. Her children are fighting over it. This was bad for the business despite that she still owned the controlling interest. She didn't want to show favoritism to either of them and needed legal advice. She asked him to represent her. He referred her to Gustavo who is the resident expert on family businesses.

Alicia had the nerve to go to Paula's house to scold her for pressing charges against her husband. Paula told her that she had no choice. It was that or lose the house. Alicia [as I have previously written] did not appear to have the brain cells to understand that. She insisted that Jaime should have helped her with the house, but Paula said that it was Gilberto who asked for the loan he didn't repay. Alicia had the further gall to say “Since when did you become so selfish. Ever since you lost Alejandra you have been going insane,” which got her a cachetada. Paula pointed out that Alejandra tried to protect her “and I still trusted you. Get out of my house. I don't ever want to see you again.” Alicia had the decency to leave. Paula sat down and continued reading her book.

Alonso went into Gustavo's office to tell him about Josefina's case. They would need to go to Jalisco for this, as the business was a tequila distillery.

New York:

Adrián and Sofia stood in an area with a view and discussed the case. Adrián was sure that the ADA they were dealing with was protecting Blums. Sofia was concerned that Cristina would give up. Lo and behold, Leonardo Morán arrived and introduced himself. Alonso had called Leonardo and briefed him on the case. Since arriving in New York he had learned that corruption has many faces and while Blums thinks he is invincible, he isn't. They started talking as they walked away.

Mexico:

Lorena went back to the library and told Manuel all about working with Ricardo and shared Ricardo's experience with this issue. From her manner he figured out that Ricardo was his competition. He told her she could trust him. She denied that she had a thing for Ricardo. She ended up going to her office in a huff.

New York:

Since the people who were afraid to testify still worked for Blums Leonardo said they needed to find someone who had no reason to fear him. Past employees who had also faced this. He said that Cristina should make a video with a public appeal. Adrián was concerned that she would be afraid to. Leonardo said that he would call his wife to help because she had been through this once herself. He called her right away and she agreed.

Mexico:

Lorena and Ricardo wrapped up the paperwork for the next day in court. He thanked her for her help and she said, “No, thanks for letting me help you.” When he shook her hand her facial expression contradicted what she said to Manuel. After she left Gustavo came in and told Ricardo that he would be going to Jalisco the next day for a case, but wanted to meet with him first about the investigation. They agreed on it.

El Ciego showed all the merchandise for distribution. El Cuevo picked up one bag with a grin and took off. El Chivo looked a little nervous before doing so.

New York:

Leonardo and Olivia joined Adrián, Sofia, and Cristina at an upscale restaurant. They told Cristina they needed to go to the media. Olivia explained what had happened to her and what she did to flush out other victims. This was even more important because they would be bringing Blums down from a high place. After some more conversation Cristina said she would think about it. She went back to her hotel. Sofia and Adrián caught Leo and Oli up on their former colleagues.

Mexico:

Ricardo went to Gustavo's apartment and told him the result of his conversations with Roberto and Juan. He handed him some articles regarding organized crime in the area.

Carlos did some internet searches and allowed Nancy to throw herself at him.He tried to restrain himself and managed to do so long enough so as not to desecrate his desk. They left the office.

Lourdes and Alonso shared some wine and conversation. She felt she needed to be there for Paula. It was Alonso who recommended they file a suit against Gilberto. Lourdes appeared to understand.

El Cuervo and El Chivo went to the club with some merchandise. The owner was skeptical, then El Cuervo recognized one of El Gringo's men. A fight broke out during which El Cuervo was injured. Nonetheless the two got out, but El Cuervo got arrested. He had handed his pistol to El Chivo, who got away.

Carlos and Nancy's hormones held out just long enough to wait until they got to his place.

The next morning El Gringo heard about what happened and was not pleased. El Ciego showed up at Carlos' place and blamed him for this. Nancy came down the stairs in Carlos' shirt and El Ciego realized what was up with them.

Comments:
Interesting episode UA. Yep, Lorena is clearly agog over Ricardo. She sparkles like a Christmas tree every time she sees him or talks about him. And agree with you that Alicia's high dudgeon with Paula is ridiculous. Gilberto is clearly in the wrong and should go to jail if he doesn't reimburse her. Why not sell his own house to pay off the debt? Then Alicia can see how she likes losing her abode. I know I'm being a bit heartless but Alicia has always been an annoying, fusty old bother in my opinion.

And naughty Nancy has clearly pierced Carlos' emotional armor. He appears unable to resist her, now that the first bulwark has been breached. And this time she wasn't packed off home afterwards, but allowed to spend the night. Gettin' serious, my lad. And just in time to be outed by el Ciego. Is Nancy in danger or is it the narco? Time will tell.

Fun to see our old couple from the first series reappear in New York to try and save the day for our young woman wronged. Like old home week.

Thanks for the recap Urban. Always a pleasure to read your prose.

Thanks, Urban.

Alicia had the further gall to say “Since when did you become so selfish. Ever since you lost Alejandra you have been going insane,” which got her a cachetada.

That slaps was well overdue! My guess is the friends will eventually make up, when Alicia’s eyes are finally pried open.

Yay, great to see Leonardo and Olivia again. I didn't think it was realistic for Mexico-based lawyers to go it alone on New York case without support from local lawyers.

Really, Nancy? Couldn't you have just stayed hidden at the top of the stairway and eavesdropped to find out more about Carlos's entanglement with El Ciego?

Good point, Niecie. That would have been much smarter for Nancy to do. She has just put herself in danger.

It occurred to me last night that someone should have asked Cristina whether Blums had any unique birthmarks normally hidden by clothing. That's another way to prove him a liar.

Judy, you are so right, but I think Lorena is in for a world of pain.

UA--This was a much livelier episode to recap and no annoying toddlers. Thank you.

Could there be romance in the air for Gus and Josey? I wouldn't put it past Alonso to encourage it. It was nice to see Eugenia Cauduro so long after Un Camino.

Paula—after a well deserved slap, she can calmly go back to her book? She should have headed for a stiff drink. I remember she read a lot in VEA.

I think Lorena is going to be disappointed when Ric doesn’t return her feelings, which right now she claims is merely admiration.

I've noticed they have quit labeling Mexico City when the action goes back there. But NYC is still labeled Nueva York, Nueva York. I was so distracted by watching where they were when Leo arrived to introduce himself that I missed a lot of the dialog. I think they were on the HighLine, I seem to remember the wooden seats. It was curious how in these scenes, people around them did notice, moved slowly through the scene and even stopped to watch. When there is a loud argument on the street, as recently as yesterday in Sin Tu Mirada, people just keep going about their business. Maybe it’s the oddity of a film crew from Mexico speaking Spanish, whereas Mexico is so used to having telenovela film crews all over the place.

Yuck—it only took a few licks on the face by puppy Nancy and Carlos was all in, but he had the decency not to deskacrate the desk.

I think Alonso and Lourdes were drinking the leftover wine from the foursome at Ric’s earlier—in the same wine glasses.

That long look between El Ciego and Nancy—am I reading too much into it or did they somehow recognize each other? Oh, that’s right, she helped get one of his dudes out of jail. There must be a reason why the writers chose to have her come down the stairs to be seen by El Ciego--she had no business calling out to Carlos asking who was at the door.

I just love the way Carlos makes Nancy do all the dirty work while he sits in his office and files his nails.

JudyB—I was thinking the same thing, re. selling Alicia’s or Gilberto’s house to compensate Paula. Don’t think Paula is any worse off without Alicia. She probably can’t even play Bingo, much less read a book.

Thank you, Urban.

Really, Nancy? Who does that? You've just spent the night with your boss, he goes downstairs to answer the door, and rather than waiting upstairs quietly and discreetly for him to come back (in case it was real business), you traipse down the stairs yelling, "Who was that?" And didn't she call him, "Carlos, no amor?" Way to go, Counselor.

I wonder if Carlos will try to kick her to the curb once the excitement and "stress release" wears off. And I wonder how THAT will go.

Oh, yes, traipsing down the stairs half -naked, might I add. Lol

Ugh! Carlos MI amor!

It's probably understood that the show takes place in Mexico but they've already had 3 different US based cases:

Alejandra with the lady who killed her husband & the uncle snatched the kids (Texas);

Victoria & Adrian with the husband who set the wife & her mom to go to jail while he skipped off with the kid (Texas);

and now Sofia & Adrian in NYC with Cristina & Blums.

I haven't seen this episode yet; it will be fun to see Leo & Oli. I was wondering if they'd make an appearance since I knew they relocated to New York.

I've never been to the High Line but the angle of the views made me think of it.

I can't wait to see what happens in court with this. As a point of interest when the term "sexual harassment" first came into common parlance I was working for someone who was seriously guilty. He never came after me because he knew I would fight back, but I caught him at an attempt at fondling an 18-year-old girl who was in her first job. The man was about five years younger than God but his mental faculties were intact so he could not have claimed insanity if he ever was reported to the law. She had been afraid to say anything to anyone about this. I told her later never to allow herself to be alone with him and to use that phrase in front of him if that happened again. There was a transit strike a little later that year and I actually walked to work because I was paid by the hour. I gave in my resignation during the transit strike and he begged me to stay until it was over. I told him he had to not challenge my filing for unemployment benefits in exchange.

That company now is gone and I'm sure he's long dead, but this was someone who loved taking advantage of anyone he thought less intelligent than himself. I hope his much-younger wife married him for his money and cheated on him.

Anon207--True about more episodes being in the US. I was referring just to the last few episodes of PASL, where they had earlier, consistently, labeled Mexico City when the scene returned to the city and then they stopped.

I loved Leo's new "luke," while Ollie looked just the same.

I was surprised there was no episode last night. My DVR setting still showed PASL. UA gets a well deserved break.

Really? What was on?

FUTBOL

Futbol, now that's a game changer.
