Por Amar Sin Ley, Season 2 Viernes 6/7/19 Episode 60: Romance in LA; Death in CDMX

*A lovely post-victory (of sorts) meal at the rooftop restaurant is interrupted by one of Bobby’s ex-playmates. Vicky pulls back inside herself but shows how to be above it all by pasting on a smile and being decent to the visitor. Exy prattles on and on about one of the adventures she had with Bobby. Awkward. It had to do with someone stalking her electronically. She got out of it by sending a picture of Bobby and said there were going out. Adrián wants to know how they knew each other. Well, Bobby says it’s more like a friend of a friend. Bobby says he’s always at the ready to help a friend, any time. Vicky chimes in, but right now he’s very occupied. Bobby, looking at Vicky intently says, he WAS very occupied, but now he’s free. Exy says great, she’s commandeering him and will be his tour guide around L.A. He’s quite reluctant to go until Vicky gives him “permission.” He looks back at her longingly as Exy drags him out the door, maybe hoping Vicky would call him back. Adrián, who has witnessed all this wonders what it really was all about.

*Once they are alone, Adrián notes how preoccupied Vicky is. She answers that she’s disappointed with the outcome of the trial. Addy commiserates, it’s unbelievable how the justice system protects law enforcement in the U.S. Vick says she’s tired. He recommends a vacation. Vick says she doesn’t take vacations. Addy wonders why not. Vick says that after three days she’s bored. Addy says that it’s probably because she doesn’t have anyone at her side to show her how to have a good time. Could be, she says, smiling. He replies that since they’ve been on so many business trips, the next one will be for pleasure; the first of many, he hopes. He invites her to come to Spain with him when they have some free time. He even makes her shake on it.

*Adrián then starts to play this great hand of cards he's been holding. He compliments her in the highest order. She thinks he’s exaggerating, but she thanks him. He tells her he likes her (me gustas)—a lot. She doesn’t know what to say. Addy says don’t say anything. Instead, they both lean in for a chaste first kiss. It gets deeper and more sincere. They are both enjoying the moment. When they mutually draw apart, Addy says don’t say a word. Vick doesn’t know what to say anyway. He hopes the kiss won’t affect the relationship they have. He wants her to know that he feels better now that she knows how he feels. She thanks him for telling her.

*Adrián walks Vick to her room. He says he likes her (as in querer, one step away from amar)—ever since they first met and he got to know her better. He likes being with her, but there’s no pressure. He would never want to hurt her. If there is something she doesn’t feel is right, she’s to tell him.  She thanks him for his sincerity. She likes that. They kiss lightly on the lips as she goes into her room by herself. He hesitates a moment, then starts walking away. Halfway down the hall, he turns back to see the empty hall.

*El Ciego and El Cuervo discuss the coming shipment. El Cuervo is all excited that he got a message from the stoolie in El Gringo’s gang. El Ciego reminds him that this has to stay between the two of them. He wants El Cuervo to ask the stoolie to work for them. He’ll pay him a lot of money for information. [That’s so comical, trading one stoolie for another—that is if El Chivo lives that long.] El Cuervo goes off happy to be of service, as El Ciego takes another swig of his beer.

*Carlos and Nancy are going over what they have. Alan comes in. They agree that Alan will have to testify. They have nothing solid against Rocio yet, since they know Daniel was also there. Daniel is their client, which complicates matters. They don’t know if Dan had time to go have that fight, commit the crime and come to them for assistance immediately. Dan could have been lying. The only way to determine that is in the hearing. Nancy agrees they have to go with what they have, even though it’s not airtight. Alan claims it’s better when they work together.

*Lorena goes to the Library at Vega, where Manuel is. She’s got too much to do, with Ric’s and Sofie’s cases while they’re gone. Manuel offers to help, even though he is studying for his exams. She accepts his help. They’ve been at it for awhile and Lorena calls it a night. They’ll pick up where they left off. She’s so looking forward to someday making a trip like Ric and Sofie are making. Manuel picks up the wrong clue—oh, with Rick? No, says Lorena, not necessarily. They say goodnight.

*Al stops by and sees Manuel in the Library, studying for a tough exam—on stuff he doesn’t need until the next semester. Al gives him some advice about loading up ahead of time just piles it on. He gives Manuel a short legal lecture.

*Michelle Salgado arrives to see Carlos. She feels neglected because she hasn’t heard from him. She thought she’d drop by. He apologizes, but there’s nothing yet on her registration. He’s still waiting for the paperwork to be returned. So, he tells her about the case of the murdered boys. She’s horrified. Whoever did it belongs in jail. [There sits the hypocrite, all a-flutter when she trades in drugs that kill children as well as adults, wrecks families and promotes crime.] She gets up to leave with a caveat—she knows her case is not one of his priorities, but she doesn’t want him to forget her. Carlos says all his clients are equally important. He’ll call her after this hearing is over for a date.

*Camila tries her very best to a resistant Sofie that it will be ok for her to go on this business trip to Baja with Ric. Marcela vows she’ll be fine, they’ll follow the schedule and it’s only for a few days. Sofie gives in; she hates letting Alonso down, so she gives Marcie her contacts and Ric’s cell number. Cam is happy that Sofie will be with that nice caballero.

*Juan is loaded with work, working late. Tatiana sashays in and kisses his cheek (how did she know he was there and how did she get in after hours, especially with Carmen away, and why didn't mamita call to ask when he'd be home). She thinks he works too hard and he needs to eat. She keeps touching him and finally talks him into accepting her invitation. After a nice dinner, Tat and Juan argue over the check. It was her invitation. He suggests she keep the money and pay him some other way. Her eyes bug out. Then he invites her to help him pick out new furniture for the house, the kind his mother would like. Taken aback, she does agree—tomorrow it’s a date.

*Marta brings Carlos a nightcap of coffee, immediately followed in by Nancy, who waves the medical report. The blood analysis shows that Rocio had the same barbiturates in her system as her sons. Carlos says this makes the hearing more complicated. It still doesn’t demonstrate who killed them.

*Gus and Ric talk about Gus’s extra-curricular case, his own. He’s bent on investigating organized crime and any and all the folks circulating around Dorantes.

*Carmen, Bobby, Adrian and Vic are ready to go home. They are leaving the consulate. All is well. Ramón’s body is on its way to the airport. Eric shows up and there are hugs all around. All they need to do is go back to the hotel to get their bags. [Adrián is wearing his ugly red coat again. Did the Patio notice the three Vega attorneys are in winter coats, Carmen none, but in a long-sleeved suit jacket, and Eric is in a short-sleeved T-shirt?]

*Lourdes enters a darkened bedroom to find Paula in Alejandra’s bed, hugging her picture. Lourdes was worried because she wouldn’t answer her calls. Paula tells her she doesn’t feel well. Lourdes says she was told she’s been staying shut in, in bed all day. Lourdes tries to get her to at least look at her. Paula turns over towards her.

THE HEARING

Rocio, bandaged at the neck, and spotting blood is brought into the cage. Since the hearing involves minors, it is a closed hearing. Rocio grins evilly at Daniel. Carlos is permitted to speak first. These are two innocent deaths. The only one who could be responsible for this tragedy is the mother. The defense attorney concedes that his client has been suffering from depression and anxiety, but as she isn’t very clear about what happened, it could have been someone else. Her husband of nearly ten years could have taken advantage of her state of mind and put the blame on her. Daniel blows his stack and is made to calm down.

*Alan takes the stand. Carlos questions him. He describes the scene he and Daniel saw when they entered the house. Was there any sign of forcible entry or traces of anyone else in the house, another adult? Alan answers no, only the mother. As Carlos accuses her of administering the overdose, Rocio speaks up. She didn’t do it. Daniel is the one because he hates her.

*No questions from the defense. Carlos asks to question Rocio under oath. He wants to know why she stopped going to see a therapist. She says the medication she was supposed to take made her feel tired and sleepy all the time. She declares she would never have hurt her sons. He asks her what happened that day. She says Daniel came to the house. They fought because he threatened to take the boys away and she wasn’t going to let him. What happened after that, Carlos asks. Daniel threatened to tell a judge she only wanted the kids for money and that’s not true. Carlos goads her. Since she wasn’t going to get any money, she took revenge by harming the children. Rocio gets agitated. She didn’t want them to suffer. The defense attorney tries to get the questioning stopped.

*In a flashback, we see the kids at the table working, while Rocio mixes water with the barbiturates in a blender. A can of juice is nearby. She cries that she didn’t want to lose them. Carlos demands she tell the truth, that SHE gave the barbiturates to her sons. In a second flashback, Rocio is sort of passed out on the couch between her two boys. We never saw her administer the barbiturates. She wakes up slowly, but can’t wake her sons. She jumps up, sees a glass or orange juice on the table, drinks it and that is when she grabs the scissors, screams and slashes herself. She claims that’s when she woke up and thought it was just a nightmare, the boys would wake up. But they didn’t. Rocio breaks down. She didn’t want to hurt them. She begs forgiveness. Carlos looks triumphant.

Well, did she or didn’t she?
Must see TV Monday

Good work, Anita. Yes, I think she did it.

The things that Daniel recorded, the evil look she gave him in the courtroom, and that there is no report of Daniel's fingerprints on the scissors she used to cut herself say that to me.
After this testimony I predict the psych ward.

I think that for the rest of this season we will see Victoria play these two guys against each other. There can't be a guarantee that Don Giovanni will eventually reform. And Adrian is lying either to Victoria or to himself: Everything will change now.

For Juan's sake I hope Tatiana makes a fool of herself at the housewarming party.

Good morning Anita.

Striking title. Gave me goosebumps. And as a Victoria-Roberto fangirl, this development upset me:

*A lovely post-victory (of sorts) meal at the rooftop restaurant is interrupted by one of Bobby’s ex-playmates. Vicky pulls back inside herself but shows how to be above it all by pasting on a smile and being decent to the visitor.

Loved that "pulls back inside herself" description. That is EXACTLY what we see the character of Victoria do, again and again. Pull waaay back in so she can't be hurt. If it worked, that would be fine. But it doesn't.

Another phrase of yours that I loved was this:

Adrian then starts to play the great hand of cards he's been holding.

Phooey. This fella is too slick for me. Don't like anything about him. Much prefer Bobby with his 100% murky past. And UA, you made me laugh calling Roberto Don Giovanni.
What a hoot.

Rocio-Daniel story unwatchable just because the events themselves are too horrible to contemplate. Here in our relatively small middle to upper class suburb, a father killed his two young sons simply to avenge himself on his wife. How one recovers from that I don't know. Why do humans ever believe themselves to be the superior species?

Well, enough of these gloomy thoughts. It's a lovely day here (so far) and your recap was a delight to read, in spite of the dark doings. Thanks Anita.

I’m confused..Didn’t jade Fraser, Rocio, Victoria’s friend die at the hands of her husband.. one of Vicky’s friends had sbusive husband. So why is there mention of Rocio. Marisol Del olmos is the matricide character. Help please. Rocio was In Season One.

I still want to know who killed the boys? There seems to be a big gap in her memory. She keeps saying I didn't want them to suffer. Seems to me she made them pay for something they didnt do. If she did it. Maybe this case is over and they can move on to something
Else.

Alonso loves those gipper speeches and
Hes good at it. Kinda boring tho.

I cant see Vicky with adrian. Looks like their life would be boring. She Wants robby, and she's playin hard to get. But he'll get her. Maybe.

Thanks Anita. Enjoy your patio ice cream.

Egad, repeated character names. Nuts!

I just checked IMDb's page for this episode and these characters are not listed. Wikipedia's page lists Marisol del Olmo as this Rocio and Mar Contreras as Lorenza. I googled photos and the ones I found identify them this way. This is most annoying.

I suspect that the issue of Rocio as Medea will be resolved shortly.

While the cases this season are mostly more interesting than last, the writers aren't giving us much to go on in terms of backstory on the clients and the suspects. We saw that in the first week when Julian murdered his parents. It took what felt like forever to find out his motive. This was definitely intentional and had nothing to do with ratings; there was about 8 months between production and air date. Does this provoke discussion and debate on Mexican sites?

Thanks for trying to clarify the actresses in the last two episodes. I could have sworn Marisol was Lorenza--the two had similar hair styles and coloring. Geesh, they could have maybe made one a blonde?

Since we don't have a flashback of Rocio actually administering the barbiturates to her children, it leaves us with some doubt as to whether she did it or not. If she did, it was unintentional and during a blackout, which might get her off.

Daniel could still have been the perpetrator, but would he have gone to that extreme to exact revenge on his wife, for whatever reason is not clear--just plain hate? Poor reason.

If Rocio had suffered from depression and anxiety for a long time, it would have been more natural for Daniel to either help her, genuinely, or to just separate and divorce her, cutting the ties. He obviously had a good relationship with at least one of his sons, who had been willing to tell him that his mother was unstable.

That's why I left the question up, did she or didn't she.

Lorenza and Fabian's case will be interesting if it turns out he is the bio-dad. Was there subterfuge involved? Why would the model go after him if she weren't sure? He, certainly, has declared he never had relations with her. Maybe it will all boil down to the definition of "relations." We've seen that before.

So, Urban, you go along with Bobby that there is something fishy about Adrian? What has made you suspect him of lying to Victoria or himself?

If he has and isn't who he says he is, he's terrific at it. He's been biding his time and not moving in on Vicky quickly, but letting it all take time. Even now, he doesn't know the whole Bobby-Vicky story, so he's not completely sure he's on safe ground, i.e. no other long-term suitors around.

Still, he could have made a better choice than Vick. Did he see a little chink in her protective armor?

She's a very one-track, career oriented professional. She doesn't seem like the domestic type like Ollie was, wanting a home and a husband and a career. Her only close friend was Ale and Bobby has been a disappointment for years as husband material. She probably tossed those dreams aside and built this protective cocoon around herself, pretending she's whole, when she does desire a stable relationship? We don't know. She hasn't exactly told us.

Then, here comes Adrian, sweet, attentive, not pushy, seemingly not a player--or not giving off those vibes. She could, possibly, see herself in a romantic relationship with him, though those work place romances don't always work out. You are left with seeing who WAS that failed relationship every day--heartbreak. Time for TEA--as JudyB stated on Mirada, tea is the Universal Solvent for Heartbreak!

Ay, JudyB--I just re-read your post. What happened in your town was real and almost identical to a possible outcome of this case. Awful, awful.

I'd forgotten about Daniel railing against some new love interest of Rocio's and how he didn't want his children around that man and that is why he wanted full custody of his children. We've never seen the guy. Wouldn't he have been a significant character? In Dateline or 48-Hours, he would have been investigated and possibly put on the witness stand.

I don't know that there's anything fishy about Adrian, but he is tempting ti Victoria, who has kept her sex life away from the office until the one time with Roberto. She knows the pitfalls of office romance and doesn't want to put herself into a bad position.

I hope that the judge hears that recording on Daniel's phone. Nobody wants to believe that a mother could kill her own children but it happens more often than anyone knows.

UA--What recording? Was it left by Rocio? Please refresh my memory. Did that happen the first time he came to Ibarra & Paez offices? It definitely should be part of the evidence submitted.

Anita, it was in Ep 57 and I included a photo.

At Alan's recommendation Daniel recorded the argument on his cell when he went to see Rocio to try one last time to get her to surrender the children to him. She refused, saying she would sooner kill them. He failed to advise Daniel not to let her know he was doing this. In all fairness to Alan he never met Rocio and therefore could not know the extent of her mental illness.

OK, now I remember. Thanks. Yes, that's why the timing between recording, coming to Alan and going back to the house is important.

Based on the time of day Daniel isn't even a suspect. It looks like he called Alan almost as soon as he left the house. It was still daylight when they met at the front door.

Thanks, Anita. Great recap but horrible storyline.

Neither parent is a prize, but I vote the mother did it because nobody puts barbiturates in a blender.

With Adrian what you see is what you get, a nice sincere loyal guy smitten on Vicky.

Is there no place Bobby can go where he won't run into a past bedmate? Poor thing.

UA, I heard Rocio say that SHE would rather be dead than give up her children, not that she'd rather THEY be dead. But I still think she did it, so I guess it doesn't make any difference.

I would like to see the supposed boyfriend, who seems like a dark horse. But I think we're being more creative than the writers as usual. None of these cases has really had much depth -- the only surprise was who actually killed Patricia in Season 1, and I don't think they knew themselves until the last minute.
