Cuna de Lobos, Capítulo 14 Thurs. 11/7/19: Diego Will Be Back
Diego prepares to leave but Catalina appears, holding a gun to his head. She tells him that his mistakes have been costly to her. He tells her that her biggest mistake was actually underestimating him. They struggle for the gun and it goes off but neither of them were hit. Diego wins, throwing Catalina breathless on the couch.
Francisco heads into the building to see Diego. He yells out Catalina’s name from the street. Catalina tells Diego she had the opportunity to kill him but didn’t, so they’re both even now. Diego hits Catalina in the head with the gun and heads out through a backdoor while Francisco forces open the front door and finds Catalina hurt on the floor. Diego drives off in his navy car.
Jose Carlos is speaking with Luis in a bar. Luis gets a corona, Jose Carlos the mineral water. Jose Carlos wants to investigate the diamond trafficking in Sierra Leone, because he’s noticed the movement of money that hasn’t been recorded into the books. All he really has is an email to Diego from someone in Sierra Leone. Luis tells him that doesn’t prove anything, but Jose Carlos knows that Luis has more information. Luis tells him to follow the money, because diamond trafficking is very complex and there’s too many people involved, all of whom want to hide the flow of money from the authorities. Jose Carlos can’t believe that Francisco is in cahoots with Diego, because of Ambar’s kidnapping, but Luis tells him that he and his son have been threatened recently when he found a bullet by a photo in his home. Jose Carlos begs him for more information on Gothier’s contacts with Sierra Leone, and Luis gives him the information of one contact.
Leonora asks Jose Carlos where he’s going. He lies that he’s going to Las Vegas to catch up with Vicky. Leonora wants to know if he will get married to Vicky, but he refuted that idea. He says he would like to get married in Las Vegas, but not to Vicky. Leonora asks him if he’s in love, but Alejandro interrupts and Leonora tells him that she was only saying goodbye to his brother. Alejandro says there will finally be some peace in the house. Jose Carlos tries to not be so bothered by that comment.
Catalina tells Francisco that she doesn’t think Diego will come back because he’s too much a coward. She sees Alejandro and asks about Jose Carlos. He reports his brother made a trip to Las Vegas. Catalina writes that off as Jose Carlos going back to his old ways.
Miguel and Alejandro talk over the phone. He tells him he has a project in Mexico and will return in a few months. Alejandro is happy to hear that. When Miguel senses that Alejandro is holding back and not being himself, he tells him to call back when he’s done faking. Alejandro gets mad at Alvaro, but he claims he has to tell him that what happened at the gay club was something very difficult for the other of them. Alejandro claims he already forgot about what happened. Alvaro says that he knows something is going on between them, and that Alejandro doesn’t have to hide who he is with him. Alejandro thinks he’s confused and shouldn’t meddle with his married life. He shows him the door saying that he doesn’t want to see him again unless it’s work related.
Francisco and Catalina talk again. She gets mad that he mentions Ambar is getting better and that he will have to bring her home. He tells her that his wife is not crazy. Catalina thinks that she should be in jail then, for having almost killed her. Francisco says that with everything that has happened to Ámbar recently it makes sense that she would think Catalina put Diego to kill her. Catalina thinks it’s all nonsense and a figment of his wife’s imagination.
In Sierra Leone, Jose Carlos orders a beer at the bar that Luis told him to visit. In the flashback, he remembers that Luis told him to be careful because everyone is being watched by the traffickers. In the present, Jose Carlos is approached by Luis’ contact, Yohari, who asks if he knows what he’s getting himself into. Jose Carlos hands over payment first and requests to be taken to the mine. They toast.
Leonora proposes that she make an art book for Gothier, with the most precious jewels. Alejandro asks why she didn’t propose that to his mother. She wanted his opinion first, so he suggests that she create the draft and he’ll take a look.
Luis is on the phone with Jose Carlos and says he doesn’t want to get involved anymore, reiterating that his son is at risk. He hangs up.
Francisco tells Ambar that he will take her home. She asks if Catalina is his lover. He says he wants her to feel better, and she says that she will, but for herself and not for his sake. She tells him he can do whatever he wants. He gets close to her and starts to hug/caress her, but she doesn’t fall for it: she tells him to leave. He does as told, the second time.
Luis is home drinking his Corona. Leonora asks where will he go? He says he’s tired of everything and should spend time with his son. She tells him she’s not fooled, and asks if he’s leaving because of her. He says no, but won’t tell her what the problem is. She doesn’t think that he’s tired of his profession, she thinks there’s something else he doesn’t want to say.
Leonora is in the living room, with Catalina commenting to her about Luis’ departure. Leonora tells her he’s leaving to spend time with his son, who’s in Guanajuato. Alejandro had joined them for the talk. Leonora suddenly feels ill and leaves to the bathroom; Catalina orders Alejandro to help her, who then ends up ordering Gelica to go. Ámbar calls Alejandro at that moment and asks him to let her talk not interrupt. She borrowed the maid’s cell phone. Ambar frantically tells him that all their lives, everyone has been living a farce, and everyone has been lied to. In the meantime Catalina is distracting Alejandro, demanding to know what Ambar is telling him. Ambar blurts out that Carlos isn’t his father, just as the maid takes back her cellphone. Catalina again demands to know what she told him. He reports, confused, that his father isn’t his father.
Alejandro is walking with Catalina and says he doesn’t understand why Ambar told him that. Catalina plays it off as Ambar being crazy. She tells Alejandro that he’s the spitting image of his father. She thinks back to when she killed her husband, the moment when she told him that Francisco was her lover and confessed that Alejandro wasn’t his son. In the present, Catalina tells Alejandro that Ambar is just sick with jealousy. When she sends him to go find Leonora, Catalina is holding in her anger.
Jose Carlos is hiding in a jeep. Luis’ contact is getting through security and they approve his passage.
Catalina visits Ambar. Ámbar tells her that she won’t scream or give her the pleasure of watching her squirm. Catalina starts to choke Ambar with one hand and holds a needle syringe on the other. She asks Ambar if she remembers Jose Carlos’ mother and claims that both of them made her life hell, then confesses to having killed Gloria. The flashback comes of Catalina injecting benzodiazepine in Gloria’s IV. Catalina looked injured too and was wearing a hospital gown. In the present, Ámbar starts screaming but Catalina managed to put the dose through.
Jose Carlos is taking photos of children mining in the river. Yohari holds a gun to his head and Jose Carlos senses it. Yohari was mad because the deal was that he could only watch, but Jose Carlos is appalled that children work there. Yohari says that those children are trying to feed their families. Jose Carlos wants to take the evidence and report to the authorities, but Yohari says that everyone is aware of the situation and nothing good will come out of it. The two men leave in the Jeep before anyone else sees them.
A nurse meets Francisco just before he goes into Ambar’s room. She prevents him at all costs from going in. He gets worried and thinks something is happening to Ambar, so he goes to look for the Dr. The nurse goes back into the room and advises Catalina to leave, who in turn reminds the nurse that she was never there.
Catalina manages to drive out to the street and receives a phone call. Francisco called to say that Ambar had a cerebrovascular accident and is in coma. Catalina wants to know how she can help him. He says at the moment there’s nothing he can do. He was teary. They hang up and suddenly Catalina’s front left window got violently broken.
Police officers have taped off Catalina’s car. Alejandro soon arrives to the scene and is told by an officer that his mother was likely kidnapped. In the next scene Catalina is tied up to the chair by Diego. He tells her that nothing will happen to her yet, as he takes off the muffler from her mouth. Diego tells her he’s dreamed of this moment for a long time now. He says that they had been doing well together, but now he has her in his hands. He loves having power and tells her that this moment is the first time in which their dynamic changed and he now holds the power while she’s forced to obey.
Gelica, Leonora and Alejandro are home. Gelica wants to know if the police is involved, and Leonora wants to know if they should tell Jose Carlos. Alejandro doesn’t think he should get bothered with this because he’s in Las Vegas. He goes to the precinct.
Leonora calls Jose Carlos to tell him that Catalina may have been kidnapped. He wants to know how his brother is taking it, and tells her to be very careful. Leonora thinks he should emotionally support Alejandro, but Jose Carlos doesn’t seem so convinced about that. He thanks her and tells her to report anything strange him.
Diego says that he loves to see Catalina defenseless. He wants to know if she really thought that he only worked with her for money. Then he suggestively asks if she ever imagined a sexual encounter with him. Not getting the answer he wanted, he repeatedly asked if she really never imagined it and he forcefully puts his hands between her legs. Catalina was shocked and disgusted. She tells him that he will regret ever having been born. He continues to abuse her.

I have wondered since the opening episode whether Diego would turn on her, but this is the ultimate humiliation. I had to watch this episode twice to catch Ambar's phone call and the ending, which I thought had been slightly different.
The big question now is no longer whether the DNA test would disqualify Alejandro from inheriting the family business, but what will happen to it once the involvement with conflict diamonds will cause it to be impounded or destroyed.
More later.
Maybe the lethal dose wasn't lethal enough to kill Ambar because Francisco showed up just as it was going through? He did bring the Dr in, without knowing what was going on. At the very least he could hold the nurse accountable for neglect since in his opinion she clearly wasn't reporting Ambar's current state to the Dr at the time.
Diego's last move was terrifying. Anyone, please correct if I misunderstood that scene. Or any scene.

Some thoughts.
There were several nice plot twists I didn’t see coming.
José Carlos not too smart crouching in the trees and bushes and taking photos of the diamond mining as a matter of fact I will say he was dumb.
Leonora gives TMI to Catalina about Luis including that his son is with his abuelos out on a ranch in Guanajuato.
I can’t see Alvaro giving up anytime soon and can’t wait until Miguel is back in town.
Catalina was quite the pro grabbing the cover in the syringe by her teeth to remove it.
I want to know how much the nurse got paid off.
So even Diego had it bad for Catalina. That was unexpected because I thought he was all about the money.
I wonder if there will be a time jump.
That is all for now.,
"He does as told, the second time" was one of many favorites.
"Leonora tells her he’s leaving to spend time with his son, who’s in Guanajuato". Very loose lips Leonora. Bad, bad mistake.
I'm not even sure where to begin. Seeing Ambar lying like a lamb as Catalina hurt her once again was almost unbearable. I really hope she does recover. That horrible nurse. I hope she burns in the fires herself. Sorry, but that was repulsive and her greed was cringeworthy.
I've had about enough of Francisco's glassy eyed stares. Stop looking and jump start your brain please.
Who knew such lascivious thoughts were in Diego's brain. Jarifa, this was a total shocker for me. I thought he would have absconded with the cash and been long gone.
Alvaro scares me. Not as much as Catalina of course but he is utterly repulsive. Alejandro should fire him. Immediately.
I hope JC comes home safe. Very curious as to how Catalina is going to get out of her predicament.
Thanks again!
Diana
I always had a feeling that Catalina killed Gloria. I too hope we get more information on that. As if JC doesn’t already hate Cat, he will hate her more when he finds out because he should find out.
I don’t know if you can actually call it a “good” thing what Diego is doing but it’s probably the only thing he can do since it seems impossible for him to be the one to kill Catalina or turn her in. She’d probably kill him first anyway.
Luis was pretty quick to give JC the info then bail. But it’s understandable that he is going to protect his son. And if Catalina finds out who knows what’ll happen.
Alejandro is certainly going to keep seeing Miguel once M returns to Mexico but he is now trapped by Catalina, Leonora and now Alvaro so getting a happily ever after with Miguel seems unreachable.
Ambar took a big risk but that only means that Catalina will do everything she can to not fail silencing Ambar completely.
Jose Carlos should have been using a smartphone. That journalist's camera is too big to hide despite that it likely takes better pictures.
Leonora as of this point has no way of knowing that Catalina presents a clear and present danger to Matias.
I agree that Alvaro won't give up. He is likely looking to out Alejandro for motives that have nothing to do with Catalina's motives or actions. If she knew about what he was up to she would probably off him.
Whatever Catalina paid the nurse I'm sure it was the least she thought would be effective. Of all these characters I suspects that she understands greed most of all.
Since we knew nothing about Diego's past or backstory this was not entirely unexpected.
If there is a time jump it will not be a big one. There is a two-year deadline on the Larios boys to produce a male heir. I can see a leap to the end of Leonora's pregnancy, which will be five months or so. If there is a male child then Catalina will consider her to be expendable. Whether there will be a public revelation about Alejandro's paternity and whether that disqualifies him from inheriting is TBD.
AnonFri, that last scene was truly cringeworthy. Whether Diego was touching her private parts by hand or whether he opened his pants and masturbated between her thighs (which was what I first thought because his facial expressions seem to point to that) does not matter. Her reaction is telling me that she may have been sexually abused by one or more men when she was young. That would make her want to get even in some way, such as being a serial killer.
I think there is one factor that is helping neither of them. Hair.
Catalina's hair is a bit unruly and has bothered me from the start. Seeing Paz in the commercials for the upcoming music awards, her hair is beautiful. In the series, her updo at the outing was not artfully messy, it was just awful :)
Leonora's is well, just unflattering. I think a different hairstyle would do wonders. Sometimes it's the details...
Diana
TJ, I wonder if Catalina will be rehiring Diego or siphoning more money to him in the side to save her own life and fortune.. Maybe someone will storm the hideout and rescue her and kill him.
Diana, I agree that Leonora's hairstyle is unflattering. She looked good at her wedding, though. Not all women can wear bangs. Catalina's hair is obviously to conceal the strap of her eyepatch.
I'm hoping Ambar is actually in a coma and comes out of it. She really deserves to live...somewhere far away for her hell.
Jarifa, ITA that Leonora gave TMI to Catalina, especially when she knows how Luis feels about Cat and tha he suspects her of trying to hurt him.
Diana “Stop looking and jump start your brain please.” Can you revive dead cells? LOL The man is totally devoid of any intelligence.
I was NOT expecting that last scene. I did wonder if Diego had "feelings" for Catalina, but I did not expect the perversity. BIG EWWWWWW!
Urban, good comment about Cata’s “karmic consequence.”
So, with Miguel coming back to Mexico -- probably around the time the baby is due -- Leonora is in for a horrible shock. Makes me wonder how she will find out. Based on previous cliffhanger scenes I will guess that she will catch them inflagrante delicto.
I think I have figured out why this and so many other of our current telenovela offerings seem so choppy (aside by poor final editing by Televisa). It could be that the U.S. broadcast has way many more commercials than in Mexico per 60 min. Since ours are only about 44 minutes, some additional minutes have to be cut out of every episode. Someone stateside has to take the scissors to scenes to cut it back to the set time. Whoever it is, probably doesn't know the story forward and cuts out scenes arbitrarily. I'm not talking about the disrobing and sex scenes. That is done deliberately.
Jose Carlos taking off for Sierra Leone on a whim...I could only think about the shots he needed, visa, etc. would take a little time. But no, there he is in Sierra Leone in the same episode! I thought it was funny they would be speaking English. I thought it would be French, but no, it was an English colony and English is still the official language. Never to old to learn something new.
This feels choppy because of the short time between the murders. It is the reason that I think that compressing this story from 85 to 25 hours is asking too much.
