WEEKEND DISCUSSION 6/3/20: The Toddlers, Tots, Tweens & Teens of Telenovelalandia
Labels: telenovelas, weekend
You are remembering the sidebar comment about the infant with earrings correctly. Very funny that her parents took the time to get her ears pierced before dropping her off at the orphanage. I'm not sure if she was the one they adopted, though. There were several baby girls there.
If anyone renemBers Amor Real, the little boy who played Fernando C olunga's son was absolutely precious.
Ot...Julie !! I have missed you and your lovely photo..My favorite avatar ever. How are you doing ?
My favorite little actors are the little girl in PEAM and that blonde, curly-headed little bit in Enamorandome Dr Ramon. He has been in a LOT of the and is a very good actor.
Sorry, don't know their names.
Oh, yes, I'm now adding the little boy playing Nico now on Te Doy La Vida.
Yes, I think that was a Juan Osorio thing so that must be the kid. It's too bad because he was really cute and fun at first, and then morphed into a real annoyance. Not even his fault, if his family was pushing him that way.
Now I'm remembering Ninel Conde's character's little boy in FELS. He was not a great actor (I remember him grinning during a scene where a camera trick made it look as though someone was shaking him) but it was nice to see a kid acting natural, like an actual kid.
Then there was a kid named Temo (I'm not sure which TN) who fell down a well and we were kind of hoping he'd stay there.
Funny how I seem to remember the cute kids better than I remember the annoying ones. I remember a lot of really annoying bratty teenagers, though.
The child actor as "annoying as a chigger bite" for me was Guillo in Amores Verdaderos.
Overacted in every single scene. But fortunately, he was not featured as extensively as Juan Osorio's kid.
The child actor playing Nico in Te Doy la Vida is excellent. Very natural. Hope he will continue to have a long and satisfying career in telenovelas and plays if that is his wish.
Since I am rewatching PESE, I will have to give my most memorable child actor award to Nikolás Caballero who played Lalito. One of my most memorable telenovela scenes is his facial reaction when Eva rips off his veil and wig at the altar and flees down the aisle. Lalito’s expression never ceases to make me laugh. Nikolás continued on in telenovelas and the last time I saw him he played Diego in “Mi marido tiene más familia” and in “Juntos: El corazón nunca se equivoca.”
That's another annoying topic as they cut short Operación Pacífico, which I was enjoying, in order to run the same TN we'd just seen They had Kate del Castillo doing promos and hinting we'd see scenes never before shown. I did not bite on that.
As of yesterday, I'm watching PATM and Anifer does get on my nerves. I had forgotten that. I think it's her voice,
By far my favorite is Fernando Colunga's kid in Amor Real. Such a beautiful smile.
Runner ups would be Benny Emmanuel as Calibri in 'Corazon Salvaje 2009 and, possibly, Diego Ávila as Chuy In 'Soy tu duena'.
Julie it's great to hear from you.
Julieeee!! How wonderful to “see” you!! The baby you and Doris mentioned sounds adorable. I must look that one up.
I must agree with those who have mentioned the Tenorio kid, quite annoying and always looked half asleep in MI Marido Tiene Familia. I always wondered if he was on something.
The child who is most memorable to me is Paloma (Lara Campos) in “La Doble Vida de Estela Carrillo.” She was SO cute and quite a remarkable little actress.
JudyB, I also think that Nico in Te Doy La Vida is doing some extraordinary acting. And there is the other “Nico” in Y Mañana Sera Otro Dia who was always wearing those super cute costumes.
So many talented young actors!
The twins from MCET were so amusing and a work of casting genius, as was the little girl who played Luz.
I had to really give this some thought because I realize I don't really like telenovela kids! Call me bad, but I have enough of them in real life :)) and in tns they never act like normal kids would. They're either "so smart for their age" or smart-mouths. They are either extremely well behaved or true nightmares.
I did like Alina from Mentir para vivir and the younger kids in Mi corazon es tuyo were cute, too.
It's a shame we no longer see children telenovelas, I actually liked those when I was younger. Carita de Angel with Miguel de Leon was extremely good and funny, but it's 20 years old.
Adriana Noel
They are in several categories and not just adorable or annoying. It's important to differentiate (at least to me) between "adornments" and hard working child actors, who often have some unbelievable dialog to have to remember and are central to the story. Nico in Te Doy La Vida is one of these--and so young. (Hard working can also include annoying, like Sebastian, who has already been identified in this category.)
The absolute worst was Emilio Osorio, in basically any part he had that I have seen.
Andy
(I'm promoting myself from "andy" to "Andy" because I find myself way too often typing "andy" when I mean to type "and". It seems my fingers have little minds of their own, and the finger muscles have memory, and whatever, so I get a promotion. I'm hoping the capitalization will break the rhythm.)
Backing up this week's haul of telenovela recordings to an external hard drive, because the hard drive hooked to the DVR is about to overflow, I came across a note about another child actress in telenovelas.
In MMTF2 little Alisson Coronado as Ana Lupe "Lupita" López Treviño, daughter of Pancho López (Arath de la Torre) was really fun. She is very pretty and she was so cute and funny wanting to be David's girlfriend.
So I don't hate all kids in telenovelas, just most :-)
Andy
Very Young but adorable
Amor Real (2003) - Carla Estrada
Alejandro Felipe – Manuel, son of Manuel and Matilde. This was his “debut” at age 5. He was generally regarded as adornment and did not have a speaking part, but he was adorable. He’s 21 now but appears to have stopped acting in 2016.
Alborada (2005) - Carla Estrada
Alejandro Renaud - Rafael Manrique y Arrellano, son of Maria Hipolita and Luis. He was probably about 3 had no speaking lines. The Patio noticed that he apparently didn’t like Lucero very much and it was obvious in scenes where she was supposed to interact with him. He seemed to gravitate towards Luis and Adalgisa, Hip's maid. Someone on Caray said he was the nephew of Irán Castillo (Catalina) I saw a note about his acting skills in Alborada and mentioned that his mother’s name was Scarlett Renaud—nothing since then.
Older children with characters well interpreted
The following are significant for me because the story involves them significantly. Their screen time was demanding and their interpretation of their roles were excellent—and they were comely youngsters.
Montecristo (2006)
Carlos Hays – Matias, son of Laura (Silvia Navarro) and Santiago (Diego Olivera in his heyday), a very demanding role. He is still acting, about 24 years old now—he was in Preso No. 1, but I didn’t watch but the first few episodes before they lost me and either didn’t see him or didn’t recognize him).
Reina de Corazones (2014)
Nicole Apollonio – Clara de Rosas, Reina and Nicolas’ daughter. She’s a pre-teen as a character that required her to show abandonment, angst, rejection, longing, anger, fear, confusion and loving—not to mention a heart transplant and a move to Spain. She’s an attractive youngster and did not overdo or was overexposed in her role.
PEAM (2013) – and MCET (2014) – both credited to Juan Osorio
Maria Jose Mariscal – Valentina Garcia Hierro in PEAM and Sarai in MCET. She’s adorable and really endeared the Patio to her AND she can act. She was also in Sueño de Amor (with Emilio Osorio), which I didn’t watch. It’s been fact checked in the news that her mother, Paola Archer, played Beatriz in MCET (the secretary who held a torch for Enrique, for reasons we couldn’t fathom).
Diego Escalona – Mau, in MCET he played the son of Leon (el Mensajerito played by Juan Pablo Gill, later as the emotionally wounded nerd in El Dragón). Escalona was born in 2010 so he played an age-appropriate 4 year old in MCET. He also excelled later in A Que No Me Dejas) and Diego in Mujeres de Negro, growing older, but still moppet-like with that curly hair.
All seven kids + assorted friends in MCET were able to work in unison and mostly convincing. Now that I’m rewatching with a less jaundiced eye, I can see the kids were having a great time. This is about the closest we came in those years to a “children’s” tn. Granted, Nando and Fanny were teenagers, with their complicated love lives and Lichita with her adolescent angst about her looks. For Paulina Goto (Fanny) this was her dress rehersal for Un Camino Hacia el Destino. Emilio Osorio, regrettably, deserves a category all his own further down. He’s obviously earnest about a career and his father gives him every opportunity to appear, but unfortunately he always comes across as annoying. I wonder what he’ll be like in another five years.
Avenida Brasil (2012), Preciosa Perla (Joia Rara 2013)
Mel Maia in Avenida Brasil as young Rita, was 8/9 then and as Perla Preciosa the following year—where she was for all practical purposes the main character at age 9/10. She’s 16 now. (I have to admit, my eyes were always on Caua Réymond, the grown up Jorgito.)
Eva Luna (2010) Carlos Sotomayor or Peter Tinoco
Gabriela Borges in Eva Luna - Laura, daughter of Daniel (Guy Ecker) She’s actually an American who had to learn Spanish for the part. She had to interact with an inter-generational cast. I thought she was great, even if her best friend turned out to be Adrian (Christian Vega, who I put down as annoying in a later list).
There are more in this category, but will add them later, with less editorial comments....(as if I could).
Un Refugio Para el Amor (2012) – Ignacio Sada Madero
Nicolas Chunga Ariche in Refugio was a constant presence in Luci’s life while in her pueblo; in the city, she interacted marginally with Mariana, Estela’s granddaughter. My notes said Ariche started out as being annoying, but he grew on us watching from the Patio
Amorcito Corazón (2012) – Lucero Suarez
Renata Notni was Marisol, Fernando’s daughter. I really didn’t remember much of this uninspiring tn. I felt I needed 24-hour beanies just to get through it. There were a lot of kids, but don’t remember any of the rest. Renata went on to play Mariana, a more important role, in Quiero Amarte—we all loved her and most recently as Adela in El Dragón (2019). She’s now 25.
Mañana Será Otro Día (2018) – Carlos Moreno Laguillo
Miranda Kay as Regina, the pregnant teen, daughter of Diana and Camilo. She had the more demanding role, complicated by the fact that her family was pressuring her from different sides and Monica inserting herself in the family inappropriately and her mother’s cancer scare. This storyline turned off nearly all of the Patio’s most dedicated watchers and could hardly qualify as a “children’s” tn, despite the presence of several children. For me, Miranda was a stand-out, she took her predicament very pragmatically, thinking for herself. Later I recognized her as the even younger Briana, Lichita’s friend in MCET (2014).
Hijas de la Luna (2019)
José Maria Nieto – Mundito, Todoelmundo’s son and 4-yr-old sidekick with the big glasses and cute outfits. He should continue to pursue other roles. He’s endearing.
Short Notes
Amor Bravío – The two kids were completely unnecessary to the story, but there they were.
Amores Verdaderos - Kendra’s Beach Ball Baby became infant Mía, whose mother rejected her
Caer en Tentación – four tortured teen-agers trying to make sense out of a screwed up world and their dysfunctional families. I didn’t really like any of them, but they had extremely difficult roles to play, including suffering sexual abuse and self-hate and mutilation.
Amores Verdaderos (2012) – Nicandro Diaz González and A Que No Me Dejas (2015) - Carlos Moreno Laguillo
Adrian Escalona – Guille, son of Leo the Low and Beatrice in AV. He was mostly annoying, but he was just the kid who got cast. Fortunately he wasn’t really central to the story, but he was kidnapped and had to adjust to living with a dirty old rag man for awhile. He also played Mauricio as the 12 year-old Diego in AQNMD. Still a little pudgy, but matched well with the face and hair of little Diego—ha, because he’s Diego Escalona’s older brother)
LQNPA (2011) – Juan Alberto Castro
Juan Bernardo Flores was Margarito in LQNPA, who constantly used his outside voice inside. He was the boy with the mysterious parentage for most of the run. Now that I’m rewatching, I have a little more sympathy for his role—he was basically a feral child growing up in a household with little upbringing, supervision, nor formal education with only Maria to love him and feed him. He used his wits to stay at the fuerte and stay out of Rogelio’s way—until Ana Paula showed up. She took pains to “tame” him, but he could still annoy the heck out of us with his over exuberant gestures and facial features when deliriously happy. The best quip from him so far is when he’s telling Tía MentiRosa, “Soy niño, no tonto,” because he did not reveal to Rogelio that AP had seen Gus at the beach.
Eva Luna (2010); CME (2010); El Talismán (2011); Me Declaro Culpable (2019)
Christian Vega – was Adrian in Eva Luna; Andresito in CME; Santiago in El Tal; Pedro in MDC. He wasn’t exactly annoying and he wasn’t driving the stories. It’s hard for me to put my finger on a reason we weren’t endeared to him and barely tolerated him in the first two roles mentioned. In his latest, he’s become a nice looking teenager and is able to act in short scenes. I personally felt he would have made a better Gabe than the actor playing Gabe. I hope he’s saving his money.
Perpetually annoying
Emilio Osorio. Let’s just leave it there.
Our Oldest Living Teenager
Sherlyn was in Alborada, FELS, and in Amores Verdaderos with roles as young ingénues even though she was already quite mature. She did AV when she was 28, playing an 18-year-old. She actually pulled it off, IMHO.
Last but not least
EL TALISMAN (2011) – Peter Tinoco & Carlos Sotomayor (who gave us Eva Luna)
No one escaped the recappers and commenters hilariously snarky remarks amplifying the annoying nature of every single character. They were all perpetually annoying. Piggorio’s two granddaughters we named F1 and F2. There’s really only one kid, Santiago, the squatter, and he was Christian Vega (see above).
There you have it, for better or worse.
Now about the babies—nothing to add except they are always carried and wrapped up like mummies and handed from adult to adult. We hardly ever see them in a stroller or carriage. Well, there was one fateful stroller scene and it was central to the CME story and it involved a kidnapping. Benjamin in Caer en Tentación was also carried around and was probably about 18-20 mos. old. At least he got to play with toys and spend “quality” time with Lola and Nico.
Un Refugio Para el Amor (2012) – Ignacio Sada Madero
I apologize for completely forgetting the two children in Refugio, as they appeared more than halfway through. They were exceptional. One was Luci and Rodrigo’s “lost boy” and the other was Gala and Rodrigo’s little girl.
Federico Porras, Jr. – Rodrigo Torreslanda, Jr./Mateo was raised by an old man AND a village who lived in boxcars. We meet him after a time jump when he’s about 5 or 6 and he’s clever and cute. Alexia is Gala’s daughter’s name. I remember that Gala ignored her and abused her, but of all people, Brigida loved her unconditionally. The two children eventually meet and there is a nice ending with a blended family.
I thought Refugio was well written, emotionally draining, but never lost its focus. All the characters were well played. We loved Pato and we relished seeing the young love of Janna and Lorenzo blossom. We didn’t even mind Aldo and we tolerated Rod the Bod. Roselena’s descent into religious madness was par excellence (kudos to Laura Flores).
Really, it only takes one look at the cast list for each tn I really get into and it brings it all back, kids, dogs, men to die over, women to admire, the well-written ones, the disasters, and tns where even the characters know they are in a tn.
Call it a passtime, not an obsession.
