**Remake of Simplemente Maria (1989), I think this was broadcast in US, but not on Univision
Labels: announcements, daytime, primetime, proximas, telemundo, telenovelas, weekend
It did take a lot of time digging up and collecting information for the last 5 year and re-arranging the format. It still isn't perfect, but it is useful. I noticed late in the process that Univision actually has a Wikipedia page where their telenovelas are listed by decade with links to the individual titles, but I was exhausted by that time.
I have continued to watch telenovelas , but if I am honest , the last show that I really enjoyed was Pasion. I wonder how long ago that was. Nobody can hold a candle to Carla Estrada and Monika Miguel. I loved the historical telnovelas, but I suppose they are too expensive to produce now. Que lastima. I have kept watching because I want to keep enjoying the wonderful folks here on the patio.
But... I think you are being too harsh on Y Mañana Será Otro Día… Mejor.
Certainly not a great TN, but not awful either. I was conflicted about it so I went back and watched the recordings I had made. I got to about the half-way point before I gave it up. (Is it any wonder I'm always behind? :)
This was an interesting experience/experiment. I saw a lot of things I hadn't really noticed the first go-round, and I was much happier with the TN after that, and I wasn't all that unhappy with it to begin with, unlike, I guess, the majority.
Interestingly, I still didn't like Rafa when he first appeared even though I knew he would later turn out to be an OK guy.
:-)
Andy
I must join Susanlynn and Novelera as a Carla Estrada fan. She has produced so many outstanding novelas. Carlos Bardasano has also become a favorite, especially after "Amar a Muerte."
I would also like to mention Delia Fiallo who is 96 years old! She is not a producer, but she did write/screenwrite many prize winning novelas which have been adapted numerous times. Among them are Esmeralda/Sin Tu Mirada, Una Muchacha Llamada Milagros/Cuidada con El Angel, Cristal/El Privilegio de Amar/Triunfo del Amor, La Mujer Que No Podia Amar , and numerous other well-liked novelas. Here is the Wiki link if you
If you're interested in what else she has written, here is the Wiki link-- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Delia_Fiallo
I remember how so many were reluctant to see MMTF because J Osorio was the producer, but were pleasantly surprised once they watched it.
Andy, if you didn't like Emmanuel Palomarez (Rafa) in YMSOD, you certainly won't like him (Rommel) in "Vencer El Medio." Check it out when you have time...completely different luuk and character!
Telenovelas set in earlier centuries seem to be universal favorites among so many of us, me included. They are certainly more expensive from sets to costumes, although the actors and directors still do their stuff. Updating doesn't always work--Amor Real vs. Lo Que La Vida Me Robo.
Carla is the master at setting the mood and sending us back to an era we think of as romantic. She actually worked her magic again in Silvia Pinal: Frente a Ti, which began back in the 1930s, then she had to bring it forward another two or three decades. Cars, costumes and home furnishings were devotedly chosen. So many of her works have been richly rewarded by awards. She's just pure genius, especially when paired with Monica Miguel.
For me there was one stand-out period piece on Telemundo, Preciosa Perla, a Brazilian film set in the 1930s and covered the Fascist and Communist scares while introducing the themes of Buddhism and divine revelation--and a wonderful love story to boot. Again, great care was taken for the sets and costumes. The musical score was great, too.
Andy--Everyone who bailed on Y Manana appreciated your devotion to keeping us up to date. I kept watching and reading, not because it was that bad, but to watch Rafa. So far, the actor playing Rafa (Emmanuel Palomares) hasn't been cast in a bad guy role--yet.
I DO bail on ones I feel are a waste of my time, like Corazon Indomable, Corona de Lagrimas, Mi Corazon es Tuyo,* Sueno de Amor, Que Te Perdone Dios. I watched almost all of Abismo de Pasion, but in 2010, still new to tns, I concentrated on Soy Tu Duena (or rather, Fernando Colunga).
*MCET is better the second time around, but thanks to FF>> I can cut out the dancing kids and the side stories to concentrate on the interaction between Jorge Salinas and Silvia Navarro. Someday, I'll make a list of my top billed actors and see how many other top actors they have been paired with, starting with Fernando Colunga.
There are some, like FELS, El Talisman and La Tempestad, which for some reason or another I found awful, that I soldiered on because of the side-splitting recaps and comments from the Caray community.
Then there are the ones I wish now I had watched, like Destilando Amor, Teresa and El Color de la Pasion, especially because folks on Caray are still referring to them.
Thanks so much for the Wiki link to Delia Fiallo. Yes, she is the creative source for so many of the stories we have been drawn to.
Because of the COVID virus, the 2020 Premios TV y Novelas has been put off indefinitely. Looking back over the 2019 offerings, are there any that stand out as winners (in any category)? Maybe I should save this for next weekend's discussion.
Pasion was filmed in 2007. I didn't start watching tns until late in 2009, but I was lucky they rebroadcast it and Amor Real and Alborada. So, I saw the trio of Fernando Colunga period novelas. I think FC had a lot to do with the enjoyment and who he was paired with, as well as Monica's direction. All in all we are fortunate to be able to go back and enjoy these works. They just never get old.

Some have incredible bodies of work. Others perhaps just one or two (in my eyes) but more than enough to be indelibly seared into my brain.
I've been pouring over your lists, trying to narrow down my favorites and it is nearly impossible.
I admit to a fondness for José Alberto Castro. For La Malquerida, the first TN I recapped and for Teresa and Rubí (2004) which were unforgettable.
Carla Estrada as well for everything she did, especially Pasion (watched it with Susanlynn among others).
Nicandro Diaz Gonzalez for Amores Verdaderos, my second favorite. And for Destilando Amor. My first. Telenovela and my introduction to my crush, Eduardo Yanez. Totally agree with Julie and hope you watch it Anita.
And finally I will mention Salvador Mejia Alejandre for Corazón salvaje (2009) containing my favorite scene, Laura Flores with Eduardo Yanez, who played her son. Don't judge until you've seen it!
Thanks for this wonderful list of fond memories.
Anita, you are so appreciated! Gracias.
I always seem late in posting and it isn't intentional. I really wanted to think about all the offerings and narrow my choices.
Diana
Thanks for weighing in with your weighty, meaty list. Some of my favorites are also yours. Amor Bravio was at the top of my list, followed by Reina de Corazones, until Amar a Muerte came along. Ever since LQLVMR, I'd avoided Angelique Boyer, but she aced it in this one as a classy, savvy but clueless woman, wooed by her dead husband in Michel Brown's body--Uffff.
Some I didn't see, but wish now I had, like Para Volver a Amar and El Color de la Pasion.
As for Destilando Amor, I watched both of the predecessors, Cafe con Aroma de Mujer with Guy Ecker (1994 direct from Colombia) and Cuando Seas Mia with Silvia Navarro and Sergio Basanez (2001) (had to watch them on-line). But it was Cuando me Enamoro that I fell in love with Silvia as an actress and am quite disappointed that she has never won an award for Best Actress.
I don't know how many here saw the 1990 Yo Compro Esa Mujer and the 1993 Corazon Salvaje but those are Ernesto Alonso Masterpieces. The first made a star of Eduardo Yanez (who took the Best Actor trophy) and the other was likely the best version of that story ever made.
I must have see at least one series by each of these producers.
Remakes are not necessarily the easy way out. Too many remakes don't compare favorably to the Televisa originals. Triunfo del Amor can't begin to compare to El Privilegio de Amar either for writing or most of the performances. Lo Que la Vida Me Robo had a good second half but the first half's story didn't work as well in modern times.
When starting out with a blank slate and someone hands you a script, everything has to be imagineered.
I agree that most remakes do not fare well in retelling.
I'm leaving out stories that came from other countries and Mexico made them their own. Requires too much more digging and I've put my shovel away for awhile.
BTW, today is the 52nd birthday of one of our favorites, the great Jorge Salinas. Hope he has a great one.
UA--Ah, to be 52 again, attractive, working, and causing swoons among women of a certain age, ignoring his current role as CrazyErnie, that is.
Steve--thank you, it was a laborious undertaking but done with joy.
I concur with your objection that classics which have withstood the test of time should be left alone--you mentioned El Privilegio de Amar being turned into Triumfo de Amor as a prime example. On the other hand, I thought Cuando Me Enamoro was superior to La Mentira in all ways, but then again, La Mentira isn't much of a classic. So, I guess it's all in the eye of the "watcher."
It's been years since I've watched a Univisión novela, but I'm very glad you mentioned Cuando me Enamoro. I think that was when I too came to admire Silvia Navarro.
Eventually, I moved over to Telemundo. There have been a number of novelas I've enjoyed there, but one (well, actually two) stand out for me over any others I've seen anywhere: La Reina del Sur 1 and 2 ☆☆☆☆. I was blown away by season 1 and was originally very skeptical when, 8 or 9 years later, Telemundo announced a season 2. Telemundo has the unfortunate tendency to milk good novelas to death, and I feared that's what would happen here. To my astonishment, Season 2 turned out to be excellent. Nothing could probably equal season 1 in my mind, but season 2 came close. And now there's apparently going to be a season 3. My initial response was NO NO NO!! But then I learned that the immensely talented Spanish author of the novel on which Season 1 was largely based, Arturo Pérez-Reverte, would have a hand again in Season 3, so now I'm cautiously optimistic.
Since this thread is at least somewhat focused on the producers, I might mention that season 1 listed Ángel Ossorio as delegate producer and Patricio Wills as executive producer. Roberto Stopello and Arturo Pérez-Reverte were listed as two of the four writers. I don't have info about season 2.
I'm annoyed when they remake stories we just saw, too, and Tierra de Reyes was a perfect exemple.
I considered Corazon Salvaje with Yanez a joke, but I consider the 1993 version a masterpiece.
Anita, Amor Bravio is still the best tn I've seen in the last 10 years, but I already liked Silvia Navarro from Cuando seas Mia. I tried to watch Cuando me enamoro after Amor Bravio but I couldn't get into it because Camila and Daniel were too fresh in my mind and La mentira is one of my very favorite novelas (Guy Ecker being my novela crush ever since I was 10 and watching him in Cafe con aroma de mujer). I do love Juan Soler, I think that in other circumstances I would have enjoyed it a lot.
Amor Bravio introduced me to Cristian de la Fuente. I think what sealed this tn as my top favorite romance was the chemistry Silvia and Cristian had. It was easy to believe they really had a relationship--the attraction, the kissing, the love-making....UFFF! I was so disappointed that his subsequent roles were less than stellar (Quiero Amarte, Sueno de Amor, En Tierras Salvajes)
I guess I should be glad I saw CME before AB, or I would have felt the same way as you do. CME was the first time I saw Silvia and I quickly devoured every other tn she did that was available on line or on Netflix--(sliced and diced the way the DVDs were) but I've got just about every DVD and movie she made. I'm still looking for La Dictadura Perfecta. Still, she and Cristian together made the pantalla sizzle and smoke.
When I discovered Amor Bravio, it was halfway through in Mexico, so I devoured one episode after another. Staying up until 2 in the morning, watching their youtube scenes long after the tn was over... I was addicted.
Are you aware that they recently starred in a movie together? They are not the main protas, but they do play a couple. If I can't have them in a novela together again(WHEN, God, WHEN?), this will do. It's called Pobre familia rica, the trailer is online, but I'm not sure the movie came out yet (postponed because of the virus).
Adriana Noel
And Victor Huggo Martin--I saw him in Sexo, Pudor y Lagrimas and he was in the Azteca version of Montecristo. I didn't see it but he played Fidel Castro in Fidel!
Adriana Noel
I'm on duty this weekend, but you are welcome to post one on for Aug 6-9.
This Weekend's will be a little late posting, but it'll be up tomorrow.
I'll let the others know about next week. It's ALL yours.
