Imperio de Mentiras Domingo 2/7/21, Chapter 91 Finale: A Kiss Before Dying

Dear Readers: We're about to wrap up the story. Justice has mostly prevailed, which is more than we can usually expect. There are still a few unanswered questions, but that's par for the course. – Velma, secretary to Mr Hammett

Renata flashed back to the night of Elisa's birthday party. She remembered arriving at the scene of the murders as she held the pistol in her hand. She cried out in anguish.

Leo arrived at his office to find his mother. She told him that José Luis had told her that when he arrived at the murder scene Augusto and Julia were already dead. He did not believe this, but Sara told him that he had to have seen him. José Luis hsd sworn this to her. Leo wasn't impressed. She believed him this time, as he had no reason to lie now. He lied to prevent the guilty party from hurting any of them. Leo still looked doubtful.

Imperio de Mentiras #90, 2/5/21: Follow the Bouncing Assassin

Bodega of Blame

Leo leads Cris out of the bodega in her pretty blue blouse and matching handcuffs. Mario reports that there's more than enough evidence to nail Eugenio. Leo gives Cris a particularly mournful puppy-face.

Leo: I thought you were different.

Cris: We all have our price.

Leo: I don't.

Cris: I know. That's why I fell in love with you.

Leo offers her a deal: information for a reduced sentence. She says she'll tell him everything, but it won't do any good. Eugenio always has an ace up his sleeve. She adds that he'll never be happy with Elisa, but she doesn't look threatening anymore, just sad and broken.

World's Weirdest Wedding

Eu's had enough of these whiny women crashing his party. He dismisses his thugs, takes a pistol, and points it at Ren. Vic steps in front of her. He trots out the ultimate emetic excuse: it was all her fault. Yes, the little girl made me do it!

Vic calls him a monster, and he calls her a hyena. She takes Ren's arm and leads her away.

Imperio de mentiras, #88, Wednesday, 02/03/21 Since the jail has a revolving door, anyone care to see the men showers again?

At Leslie's funeral, Leo asks Sara if she wants some coffee. She’s in a bad shape because the family is destroyed, she doesn’t know how she’ll be able to go on.  They hug and Leo goes to see Elisa, tells her he’s afraid his mom will get sick. He wipes away a tear, says thanks to Elisa for being there. It’s the least she can do, after everything he's done for her. They hug, as he cries. Then she says that she has to go back to the house, he asks what’s wrong. Elisa tells him about Renata getting her baby, but Mau said the baby is Sonia’s and Eww took him away in order for Ren to keep her mouth shut about certain secrets that she knows. Leo thinks Eww is capable of anything, Sonia was out just to give birth and she came back to jail without the baby. Elisa feels stupid, how could she defend Eww all this time. Leo says it’s not their fault people they trusted turned out evil. She thinks her mom is as bad as the rest, he suggests she might be blackmailed, too. She says the bad guys need to be stopped, apologizes for bringing this up here. He reassures her, as long as the killers are not behind bars neither of them will be tranquilo.

Imperio de Mentiras #87, 02/2/21: Of Martyrdom, Male Egos And Manias

As realization hits Carlos, Leonardo, and Elisa that angelic young Leslie has breathed her last, tears flow non-stop. This corner of  Viewerville, being somewhat more practical during this adventure to Acapulco, is wondering how Carlos will explain to madre y padre where he has been and where he got the no-small-fortune to fly him and his ailing girlfriend there, dying wish or no.

So, back in the D.F., in Maria Jose's hospital room, Majo is trying to get out of bed to race off with Dario to parts unknown, unseen by any of Mexico's Finest, which would necessarily include Leo and Posse as well as, regrettably, Christina. She may have gone over to The Dark Side, but she does know how to sniff 'em out.  (Perhaps when this novela ends she might consider joining the cast of Bounty Hunter.  Just a thought.....)  As it stands, Dario reminds Majo she's there for a reason and that she is ill and must stay till her doctor discharges her.  But, no, Majo insists there are cops outside the entrance and in the hallways--Keystone though they may be.  She believes they can escape unseen {while she hobbles I suppose) and hightail it across the border somewhere.  Just then Clara returns from her reconnaissance mission to inform Dario and Majo that these police are from the prison but are there for somebody else's needs, not tracking down Dario.

Imperio de Mentiras Lunes 2/2/21, Chapter 86: The Long Goodbye

Dear Readers: One life ends and another begins... in the same hellhole. As our tale winds down we still don't know who will survive. – Velma, secretary to Mr Hammett

Adriana took Fernanda into the interrogation room, saying that someone would shortly be there to take her statement. Fernanda was afraid that Fabricio would try to take her son away. She said that the money was Juanito's. Adriana told her that her only chance – her last one now – was to denounce Eugenio. The police could do nothing if she did not.

Imperio de Mentiras #84/85, 1/29/2021: Goodbye Tiny Dancer, Hello Baby Throw-Rug

Apparently the mission of Mau & Ren was scrubbed after failing to achieve liftoff. She tells him everything is still wonderful; their love was bound to be "different." Def true that.

Elisa wakes up in Leo's jacket and gets her hand-delivered Starbucks from the nurse. She takes a deep breath of Leo/leather/coffee and smiles to herself.

Clara holds Majo's hand and tells her she will always be with her. Majo says they are the best of just-friends. That's good enough for Clara, who is just happy she knows someone who isn't dead.

Sonia's baby is delivered by four gung-ho docs with Ren looking on from the observation area. Sonia looks as happy as we have ever seen her, which isn't saying much. The baby looks like an actual newborn. Where do they rent these damp infants?

Imperio de mentiras, #82, Wednesday, 01/27/21 Wait till Dario finds out

This will be dialogue heavy, since there is much to tell and don't want to miss any important details.

Breaking news! Starbucks delivers!

Elisa is at the hospital, when a delivery guy shows up with coffee for a Miss Cantu. Flowers are better, but Elisa hates those, so lattes are the next best thing, I guess. Flashback to Leo giving her a coffee back in the day. She is reluctant to accept, Ren and Vic show up just then and look happy with the treat. Leo looks on from afar, Elisa has a sip of her coffee… Miam, good latte!

Imperio de Mentiras 1/26/21, #81: Pesos From Hell

At los Alvarez, Clara is looking for something in the closet for Leslie - a coverlet?  Suddenly a shoebox falls off the shelf and bunches o' bills land on the bedroom floor.  Leslie asks what just happened.  (Damned if Clara's silence isn't as annoying as her mother's screeching denials of criminality.)  Clara finally brings her a couple of packets to peruse.  She hesitates in explaining what this money is.   It's the money Jose Luis accused her mother of stealing from his bedroom the other day.  Yes, Nieves apparently stole it when Clara and her mother went to the house to get Leslie a few things to bring to the hospital.  Mama supposedly stayed in her parents' bedroom "tidying up things" in their closet.  "--My father killed your mother for this money?"  Not exactly, but yeah, girlfriend, he would have.... "And this is my Daddy's blood money?" Horror of horrors.  Say it ain't so, Jooooooo-se!

Imperio de mentiras, #78, Thursday, 01/21/21 The perils of Sonia.... still

Nieves dies with Clara sobbing next to her. I feel bad for her, in less than a year she’s lost her sister, father and mother. That being said, Nieves deserved to die times a million.

Elisa is crying, too, but not for Nieves. She’s remembering Leo’s smooth skill at cooking pasta back in NY, when life was simpler.

Mario phones Leo to let him know a 911 call came from Julia’s house; apparently a homicide. Leo goes to see what’s going on, gets stopped by Teresa, who is having a hard time with everything that is going on. Leo tries to cheer her up, asks her to stay calm for Leslie. When Leo’s gone, JLow calls Teresa from lockup – he asks her to stay in the house the next day, she will receive the rest of the money needed for Leslie’s treatment. Teresa mentions that something strange is going on at Clara’s, does he know what that is? He doesn’t care, she insists, he reminds her that he’s in prison and repeats that she needs to put their dirty money to good use.

Imperio de Mentiras #77, 1/19/21:The Shot Heard 'Round The Front Yard

We return to the sight of a cowardly Jose Luis, head of the Fiscalia, now facing total humiliation beyond belief at having to confess to his dirty dealings and being condemned to prison for a lifetime if not longer.....He pulls his gun and places it under his chin.  (I am mesmerized by that fuzzy beard bobbing up and down.) The scene shifts to Leonardo entering the front gate.  Suddenly he hears the gunshot and races into the front room to find JL blubbering away.  He's too cowardly to even kill himself. (All I can think of is how are they going to fix that bullet hole?)  Finally, it dawns on Leo that maybe everything Sonia related in her statement about his brother very well might be true.  He asks--no, he pesters-- JL about whether he really works for Eugenio Serrano; did he kill Cantu--and Julia as well as his unborn child????  JL's silence speaks proverbial volumes.

In the hospital lounge, Sarah breaks down in tears now at the sad truth that Theresa brings to the party as well.

Imperio de Mentiras #75, 1/15/21: Liars' Lineup

Jose Luis arrives at the shantytown and shoots into the air to scare off the lusty hillbillies. He's looking less and less like a real murderer. Adri puts up a fight when he drags her off, but he's way bigger -- also he has a gun, and she's still handcuffed. I'd give them closer to even odds in a fair fight. At least he doesn't tell her she's beautiful when she's angry.

Fab tells El he'll stay on top of Majo's lawyers and let her know right away if there's any news. Is he lying? How would we know? (In this tn it would be easier to look for tells that people are not lying. Note to self: Pay more attention to Mario and Leo's forgettable boss.) Elisa tells the grandmotherly maid not to let either of her sisters leave the house and goes out to look for Leo. The maid must be wearing an invisible beanie, because she nods agreeably as if this is even remotely possible.

Clara and Nieves are packing up an overnight bag for Les when Elisa arrives at Casa Velasco. Elisa offers to drive Clara to the next stop on the boyfriend scavenger hunt, while Nieves insists on staying behind to snoop in all the cabinets "tidy up."

Imperio de mentiras, #73, Wednesday, 01/13/21 "The walls are closing in"

During their pillow talk with JLow Adriana spills the beans about Sonia, saying that she’s at her place and there is only a guy guarding the door. JLow wants to run to get her, but Adriana still has questions. Why is he working for Eww? JLow mentions needing money for Leslie’s treatment, but Adriana knows this is a lie, since Leslie has only been sick for a few capitulos. He insists he always did it to protect his daughter. Now he’s in a hurry, they need to get to Sonia.

It finally downs on Adriana that he is using her. JLow points out that she’s a big girl, he never forced her. He asks for her forgiveness, says that he loves her and he’s in her hands. Adriana wants to know about all his dirty dealings with Eww. JLow asks if she’s sure, will she then do her cop duty? (The patio would like to know if she still remembers that she’s a cop.)

Imperio De Mentiras #72, 1/12/21: Disclosure, Closure and A Double-Dose of Deception

The discussion between Sonia and Adriana continues.  Adri tearfully stays in denial about Jose Luis being a paid informant (at the least) of Eugenio Serrano.   Adri insists that there has to be another reason JL would come to Serrano's home; she asks why when Sonia had the chance (all the many times there were) that she didn't say something to somebody, anybody?  For fear, my dear!  You are his lover (just see how badly you're taking it, right?)  and Leo is his brother.  Adri insists Jose Luis is a great guy.--and after all she should be able to give an unbiased assessment, right?  Adri sobs that she was JL's right-hand woe-man for years.  She'd have known somehow she's certain--perspicacious, perceptive woeman that she has been up to now, right?   Sonia says go ask Leo (I think) or tell? Leo what Sonia's told her.  No, Adri finally says she will ask JL upfront about this before talking to anybody else (Leo in particular?) because if so there must be a justifiable reason that he was forced to do this,  Yeah that's it!!??    Sonia says good luck with that.  Adri won't learn anything. He's deceived everyone, his brother, her, his family..... The only explanation for this that Sonia has, she says, is that Ewwy must have arrived at the correct price to buy the dude.  Adri asks Sonia to stay quiet and not speak to Leo about this yet.  Give her some time to confront JL with this and observe and hear his side of it.    Sonia doesn't really want to continue lying but will give her that bit of time to speak with JL.

Dear Readers: Mr Hammett regrets he is unable to complete this assignment due to major stress from the pace of this action. While he rests and tries to reduce his dependence on the hair of the dog, I will complete this assignment for you. – Velma, secretary to Mr Hammett

José Luis tried to tell Adriana that he loved her above anyone else but failed to extract the truth from her about Sonia's whereabouts. She told him that Sonia was in the custody of the Federales. [Take that, Castro wannabe.]

Imperio de mentiras, Capitulo 69 COMPLETE, Thursday, 01/07/20 The mother of all flashbacks... almost

We start with this gem of a dialogue, worthy of Shakespeare at the very least.

The scene: Leo and Dario, separated by cell bars, both unshaved, because of fashiouuuun.

“I’m going to ask you again, for a last time, pinky promise! Are you Eugenio Serrano’s son?”

“Find out on your own, you’re a big shot cop!”

“Now, 50 episodes later, I understand what you meant when you said we had a common enemy.”

“You don’t know where to go or what to think! You’re stuuuupid!”

“Am not! Eww killed Julia and Augusto, am I right?”

“Que estupido! Like I would ever answer that question!”

“It’s for you own sake, for your venganza! Or would you rather rot in this jail, without phone privileges? Let’s work together, things could change for you! You could have a reduced sentence.”

“By how much? 5, 10 years? Neah, this no longer interest me. Guard?”

And it’s the delinquent who leaves the decorated cop shouting for him, while he strolls away smirking, not a care in the world.

Imperio de Mentiras, 1/5/21, #68: The Big Reveal - NOT

DarthDario's manhood has been assured for eternity as he's been told that Majo's preggers.  Hell no he won't reject her/it/them!  He loves the idea!  He assures Majo that he's never going to be the kind of psychopath papi that his papi obviously was.  BUT, speaking of psychopathic pappies...nobody but nobody, not even her sisters or mother (gawd forbid!) must learn about this--especially El Tio Ewwy--which of course means that the whole of DF will know posthaste, forthwith, aka, ASAP.

Meanwhile, at the Cantu No-Can-Do casota, Elisa continues to mope; she remembers Christina's femme fatale fantasy regarding her mythical, hot, heavenly, and...er... bosomed-buddy relationship with Leonardo.  El flashes back to Cruel Chrisie's ultimate opportunity to save worthless Majo's gluteus maximus.   Either El abandons Leo for good. or Majo's going down as Dario Ramirez's willing accomplice (which we all know she was, the stupid twit).

No one here gets out alive.”

Mauricio told Majo that he had the proof of what had been done to Renata. She asked him to send it to her phone but he said he needed to show it to Renata. He wanted to see her, but Majo told him that was not possible. She explained that Renata had another crisis fit and was being heavily medicated. He began having a fit at this news, telling her that the medications were meant to make her forget what she knew. As he began stimming he told her that he was certain that Victoria ordered this. Majo said she would return when he had calmed down, but Mauricio insisted on talking to Renata. He flapped his arms a bit more before sitting down. [What medications are they shooting him up with?]

Imperio de Mentiras #66, 1/1/21: In Which Some Lies Are Revealed, But More Are Told to Keep the Balance

Ay, Caray! I didn't realize the show was on tonight, so I hope you like it quick & dirty...

JL assures a hollow-eyed Leslie that the whole Adri thing was just a reaction to Tere's nostalgia-bonking with Raymundo and the eyeful she just got was their goodbye kiss, honest. That man has no shame.

Accountant guy tells Fer that Augie always took good care of all of them and especially her -- Augie really loved her, he told him so himself. (So is Augie supposed to be a good guy now, or are we on our fifth team of writers?) Fer offers him part of the cash to help her get the settlement, but he says he isn't in it for the ducats, he just wants to do what's right. For sure we won't be seeing him again. He doesn't fit in with the plot at all.

Fab gets Majo to sign the Very Important Papers by showing her that Elisa already okayed them. Dramatic music.

Adri tells Leo that it was Mario who tipped Cris off about Elisa's surrender. And that's not all -- now IA is investigating JL, when all he did was meet with Eugenio to talk him out of pressing charges against Leo when he got all up in his grill at Marcelo's funeral.

No puede ser! Leo can't believe Cris suspects his brother. Has he forgotten how recently he suspected his brother? Has he forgotten that inexplicably enormous secret bank account? Have we? The writers certainly have. Maybe Sonia found it in JL's glove box and is now living it up on the Riviera Maya with her mom, El Pinqui, and Raymundo's dog.

Imperio de mentiras, Wednesday, #65, 12/30/20 The sick, the hurting and the insane

Leo and Dario are in a fight for their lives. The gun goes off  and … Leo is on the ground, wounded, while Majo and Piedad look on in shock. Leo is well enough to asks Majo to call the cops, Piedad wants to call a doctor. Dario screams that he was only defending himself, while Majo finally calls for medical help.

Renata has been sedated by Creepy Oscar, who is back in the picture. Vic doesn’t know what got her so hot and bothered, wants a stronger sedative, since she’s afraid Ren might wake up and hurt her. She also wants the nurse to spend the night. Oscar says there is no need for another sedative, Ren will sleep through the night. Vic suggests committing her again, even Oscar seems to think this is too much.
