Imperio de mentiras #8, 9/30/20 How do you solve a mystery like Dario?
Renata, the life of the party
Sonia and Leo are outside, taking a breath of fresh air and threatening one another.
She thinks that she has Leo cornered, but that’s not exactly true, since he’s just seen her making out with Marcelo in the bathroom. Slow clap, Leonardo Velasco, you're not that bad of a cop. Also, I gotta say, Marcelo is pretty stupid to risk this much, it can’t be because of his great love for Sonia. More likely his libido and thinking he’s too good to be discovered? Sonia knows Leo is no NY businessman and he knows she’s a cheater. Leo suggests a pact, they both keep their mouths shut and keep on doing what they want. Sonia supposes that Elisa is not aware of the lie, but she doesn’t have a choice but to agree to Leo’s terms.
Renata comes over, taking Leo with her inside, he’s her new obsession, and that’s just because he was nice to her. That’s so sad. She’s acting manic (could she be bipolar?), wants to enjoy life! Everyone looks on, as Victoria is furious with Marcelo for not keeping Renata in the room.
Eugenio takes Leo to the office (already acting like the head of the family). Is he serious with Elisa? Can they talk business? Leo plays along, agrees to talk “negocios” in his pretend NY office.
Later, Renata wants to make a toast: for Leo, possibly the new Cantu CEO, now that he’s involved with Elisa. Marcelo tries to take her upstairs, but Renata is not having it. She wants to play the truth game:
“Tio Eugenio, how can you stand Sonia, is it just because she’s young and pretty?"
" Leo, why are you with Elisa, can’t you see how boring she truly is? All she thinks about is work… or, are you after the family money?”
Marcelo stops Renata just before her game gets truly good. Quite the party pooper. I'm loving Renata in this scene, she should have had the chance to say something about mommy dearest, too.
As it is, Victoria apologizes to Leo for Renata’s behavior and Eugenio shows his hypocritical sympathy for Victoria’s suffering. Then he says bye-bye, time to go assault Sonia some more.
Leo thinks it’s time for him to go, too. Elisa accompanies him outside. They both think the night went well. Leo never mentions his talk with Sonia! He's probably afraid that Elisa would tell the whole family that Marcelo is a cheater and he would lose his leverage against Sonia, but she won't be happy when she find outs he knew about Renata being cheated on.
He says goodbye, goes to his car, looks back at Elisa’s lingering eyes… He wants to know what’s wrong. She’s upset, worried about Majo, lying to her mother, wearing a bland black dresses and still hasn't found a decent hair style . Leo encourages her, they have no choice. Elisa apologizes for Renata, too, but Leo is not offended, he’s too busy gazing at Elisa, assuring her for the 156th time that he’s there for her, to help her and only her. Elisa smiles, she feels so protected around him.
He finally decides to leave, spare her his presence. They joke about being novios, it comes with the territory. She thinks he took things a little too far with the kiss, she almost wanted to slap him (her lips say slap, but her eyes say bang). Now that he knows the whole family, he has to investigate them (better late then never, huh?). The police pals (their names will forever be a mystery for me) call just then, with news - Leo needs to come over. Elisa insists that she come, too.
True detective work
While Leo is deep undercover (ahem!) in the Cantu house, the detectives squad does some serious police work.
Jose Luis is questioning Fernanda about the illicit artifacts. Fern knows nothing about this, Elisa is the one in charge of the gallery (best friend that she is).
JL leaves for a moment, so Girl Cop tries to trick Fernanda. She mentions how more often than not women end up in jail after being forced into helping their bosses; they are harassed into accepting and they keep their mouths shut, too afraid to talk. Fernanda doesn’t bite, she simply kept quiet about the affair because she didn’t want to lose Elisa’s friendship or her job. And she had no clue Augusto had a second lover, she thought she was the only one. Girl Cop tries to sweet talk her some more, promising that what they discuss will be their secret.
When JL gets back (he has been watching the whole exchange, obviously), he offers Fernanda a deal: they will let her go if she agrees to keep them informed about all the money deals and financial situation of the Cantu family. Fernanda doesn’t answer.
Later on Girl Cop and Boy Cop talk about Fernanda’s lies. They found out about the child she keeps hidden, they eventually agree that had it been Augusto’s kid, Fernanda would have come after the Cantu money.
More importantly, they found the video of the kidnapping and on it, one of the kidnappers’ faces, the idiot who removed his sky mask before getting back into the car (the same idiot who tried to rape Majo).
When Leo and Elisa arrive, Girl Cop doesn’t think it’s a good idea for Elisa to be there. Regardless, they all look at the video together. They can’t see a plate number, but they could try to identify the guy who removed his mask. The only problem is in order to do that they need to ask for JL’s authorization, which is not possible, since Leo reminds them that Majo’s kidnapping needs to stay a secret. They all agree that someone very powerful is behind the kidnapping, because they’ve made the video disappear and it took some digging to find it.
Elisa is scared, she needs Leo’s encouragement and hand holding all through the talk.
JL arrives at home, he tries to talk to Teresa, he'd
like to make an effort to reconcile with his wife, maybe go see a
therapist together; she’s not glad with the idea, she’s sick and tired of his
late work nights, suspects him of cheating. Maybe they should both pay more attention
to their daughter, who is probably drinking too much or is involved in
something shady. The only one who seems worried for now is her grandma.
Who is bad and who is good and who changes sides every other episode?
Remember how the other day the Commandante was talking with Eugenio on the phone, complotting with him? Now he’s with Dario, who shows him Leo’s photo. The Commandante has identified him as a decorated cop right away and Dario looks furious, but not for the reasons we would believe. He says he needs some more time, he needs to keep people on the false track for longer. What I get from this exchange is that Commandante is only pretending to be working with Eugenio and Dario is definitely an undercover agent… Then maybe he should be less convincing when he threatens Elisa, she’s scared out of her mind.
Later, Dario brings Majo her suitcase (remember she was going to NY when she was taken) and a book about constellations. He doesn’t trust her back outside for now, he knows she’d try to run away. (D’uh!). She only wants to go back home, to her family. Dario assures her that they don’t care, they’re having a party. Majo reminds him that they’re not aware of her kidnapping, but once again Dario tries to turn her against Elisa, who shouldn’t be having a party now, because she does know the truth. He is the only one who truly cares about her, he is the only one protecting her. This is some messed up manipulation, what game are you playing, Dario?
Majo is on to him, though, how come he knows so much about her family, what’s his endgame? He promises to answer that question when she’ll truly want to know. Only in a telenovela… Who talks like this?
Pablo, the idiot rapist, wants to get his job back, but it’s a no go. He almost gets his brains blown out when Dario points a gun at him and tells him to beat it before it’s too late.
Eugenio, who has witnessed Leo’s talk with Sonia, but was too far away to actually hear what they were saying, demands Sonia to tell him what they were talking about. Sonia evades his questions, but for how long?
When Eugenio summons him, very late at night, Dario says that Leo’s story checks out – he’s truly a business man from NY. They get into it over who needs to be better at investigating their various targets. Eugenio wants to wait before using Elisa again, they need to put a break on their illicit transports, since the situation is too flammable for now. Eugenio wonders how come Dario didn’t kill Pablo when he came back to him (he's following Dario, too, not only Elisa), he doesn’t care how they’ll get rid of the body, it needs to be done, or else!
The next morning Dario is at home, his actual home, with his actual mother (who doesn’t appear to be able to walk). He’s looking through a window, remembering a time when he was infatuated with a blond girl. Mom says he was 8 at the time, he’s surprised she has such a good memory. How could she forget, that’s when his father…
His father what? She stops, she’s so sorry for what he had to go through. Dario has had it, his father will have to pay for what he’s done, he will pay with his own blood.
Couch sleeping, part 2
Elisa wakes up on the couch, she's fallen asleep after watching the video. Leo’s friends are gone. She’s apologetic for complicating their lives, he reminds her that they’re all in this together.
They keep saying that whoever took Majo killed Julia and Augusto, but I’m not so sure. That would mean that Eugenio is behind it and it would be too easy of a mystery.
Elisa wonders if everything will go back to normal once they find her sister. She’s sad, what she really wants to know is what will happen with the two of them.
Leo assures her that things will never be the same again. They’re both smiling, the “falling in love” grin written all over their faces, and Leo has prepared breakfast yet again.
Renata is still acting high, she just took a pregnancy test. Marcelo is shocked that she hasn’t been on the pill for the last two months. She has a crisis when she realizes the test is negative, Marcelo tries to calm her, they will have their baby, but nobody needs to know about it.
Girl Cop and Boy Cop go to JL with the video, even if Leo explicitly said no. JL is furious they’re still up to no good, but they’re interrupted by the Commandante.
Later, as Dario is allowing for Majo to go outside in the garden, he gets a call from the police chief, warning him the cops have the video of the kidnapping and Leo hasn’t stopped investigating. Their talk is so cryptic, you no longer know on which side they are.
Majo takes advantage of Dario’s carelessness, finds a hole in the fence and tries to run.
Leo visits Julia’s house, her dad is home alone. He shows Leo a ticket he found in Julia’s room – it’s a plane ticket from Mexico to NY. Leo looks a little bit heartbroken to make a first real connection between Augusto and Julia. Whatever, dude, you’re in love with another woman already.
Clara arrives for her first day as Victoria’s assistant, wearing the clothes Victoria bought for her (she should have added a head band to the shopping cart). They start talking about Clara’s job, but Victoria doesn’t waste any time asking how long Julia had been involved with her husband. Clara is impactada.
Victoria also notices that Elisa hasn’t slept at home, but we don’t get to see that walk of shame because Elisa shows up at the office in new clothes and wants some girl talk with Fernanda. NO, girl, watch out! She starts talking about some feelings she has, how she can’t stop thinking about someone. It’s your novio, right, Elisa, it’s normal to have feelings for him… shut up, you fool!
She is stopped before saying too much - her phone rings, it’s putrid Pablo, with a proposition: he can help her find her sister.

Ah HA! So Scario Dario is not just hired thug, he's got some "revenge" on his mind (this is something I was strongly suspecting—revenge is often a motivator for crazy behavior in telenovelas) and may be an undercover cop! So now we know how it may be possible for him to be a future scary galán (probably).
Phew! Leo was saved at the last minute by having caught Sonia & Marcelo earlier. This storyline is moving along nicely and I can hardly wait to find out what happens next, since Mojo has flown the coop.
Thank you so much for your fantastic recap!!
It looks like we have a better idea of what Julia was involved in with the finding of the plane ticket.
It is good they are rounding out the Dario character. He seems to have it bad for Majo. I hope she manages not to be tracked down.
Looking forward to the next one.
Beyond witty beginning with “She’s upset, worried about Majo, lying to her mother, wearing a bland black dresses and still hasn't found a decent hair style”.
“He almost wanted to slap him (her lips say slap, but her eyes say bang)” was another favorite among too many to count.
“Commandante is only pretending to be working with Eugenio and Dario is definitely an undercover agent”. OK, color me flummoxed. To anyone who suspected Dario was undercover, you have my sincerest respect. That hit me out of left field. And of course we are now wondering who Dario’s father is. It couldn’t possibly be Eugenio, could it?? Complete speculation.
“Marcelo stops Renata just before her game gets truly good. Quite the party pooper. I'm loving Renata in this scene, she should have had the chance to say something about mommy dearest, too" was spot on. It is so achingly apparent Renata has never received the help she needed.
“Marcelo tries to calm her, they will have their baby, but nobody needs to know about it”. Really? Good luck with that.
I like the slow building chemistry between Leo and Elisa. His catching Sonia with Marcelo was fortuitous.
“So now we know how it may be possible for him to be a future scary galán (probably)” – totally agree Elvira. Brooding and mysterious is fine but bitter rage isn’t exactly appealing.
Jarifa, yes, Julia’s plane ticket stub was a major revelation. Still curious as to how she took trips without Leo knowing.
Dario has a very real problem now. I don't think Majo is going to escape. If I'm wrong (likely) I don't think she will give Dario up. Feelings have already taken root and she will try to protect him.
This story is moving quickly and I'm enjoying it. The excellent recaps and comments make it even better.
Thank you so much Adriana Noel!
Diana
See? I knew it. I don't have a man crush on Scario, just a keen sense of somebody trying too hard. But Dam, who's zoomin who? Any of you recappers good with Excell spreadsheets? Steve probably is, but by the time he is interested in them, we are not. (body count)
Best line of the night, 'lips say slap, eyes say bang.' Clever girl. I wondered also about Scario's Dad, Diana. At this stage of things we can count out Augusto, can't we? Or is he getting revenge on dead stroke's family? My head is still spinning too fast to make sense of it all yet. Coffee, yeah, maybe coffee will help.
For you armchair psychologists, darting through a convenient hole in the fence is NOT evidence of late stage Stockholm Syndrome. But can you have it by proxy? I was almost disappointed that Mojo got away. Especially after we were reminded that she had all the necessities of life (for a TN chick) in her luggage which was captured too. TN honeys move cross country sans Uhaul or anything, just a little roller suitcase.
Secret pregnancy and all Renutty. Gonna rename you DoubleNutty. If she only knew that Sonia was beating her to the sperm bank every time we would have a real showdown.
Thank you again Ms. Noel
Jarifa: You think Majo ends up with Dario after the Hell he put her through ? Kidnapping her, torturing her, etc.,
More later, I'm at work...
The two cops are Mario and... Adriana. I think they're both good interrogators.
Dario is still a bit of a mystery, but he did make an earlier reference to his mother in a conversation with Majo. There is someone whose Karmageddon he wants to cause, but we have no other information about this yet. He is too well-spoken to have grown up dirt-poor so for him to be an undercover cop seems very likely.
Toxic parents and mental illness seem to be recurring themes in GG's productions: Maleny and Daniel in YNCELH, Emiliano in La Candidata,, Raquel in Caer en Tentacion, take your pick in Cuna de Lobos. Most of those characters came to a bad end.
That is no coincidence.
Wow wow wow. I never imagined that Scario might be an undercover cop. Just like Leo, he loves his mama and his mama loves him. You have to Love a guy who loves his mother.
The old saying is that " the way to a man's heart is through his stomach, " but Leo seems to apply the method to Elisa. When you Love someone, you want to take care of him \ her. Providing a meal is part of caring for someone that you love. Keep in cooking , Leo. Elisa looks truly touched and grateful when Leo prepares a meal for her . The PA Dutch have a saying that translated is " Kissing don't last, coming do." Although I think kissing lasts, too. Cooking for the one you Love and kissing should both last.
I have only seen one of GGs shows, Cuna. Yikes . I absolutely hated the ending of Cuna..worst finale ever . I am now very worried about the fate of Loving Leo and Maybeundercover Dario.
Everybody stay safe and well. It is a pretty nice day here today.
"assuring her for the 156th time that he’s there for her, to help her and only her" (Chug a lug!)
"her lips say slap, but her eyes say bang" Lots of subconscious little eye flirts throughout this episodio.
Still wish costuming could have put ol' Leo in a sharper looking suit.
I wasn't able to see with CC and the scene between Commandante and Dario wasn't clear to me. El C explained what division Leo's in and why he was sent to Monterey and why he's so interested in this case, i.e., Julia's involvement and death. So did Dario say somebody should continue watching him or that Leo's been on the trail of the kidnappers for a while now? Thanks.
It depends, he actually has not physically hurt her, it is just all mental. Like he has not been chopping off fingers and toes or something, think ePIGmenio. And saving her from Grampa Gonnagetit probably cancels a lot of it. Painful, nonetheless, but if his motives are of some lofty enough ideals, yes I think she could. 'Specially if she really lusts for him.
Jardinera, if they are going to lure us into going all in on a TN like this, shouldn't they publish some Cliff's Notes?
Adriana and Mario are indeed good interrogators, but Fer is holding fast to her guns and lying though her teeth. Everytime she opens her mouth, she spits out deception. I keep thinking about her and wonder exactly how deep she is in this whole criminal mess. I think back on her watching Vic open the safe of the office through the crack of the door. Could it be that Fer was making sure that Vic found the file on Julia? I am also wondering if Julia was Fer's age...could they have known each other from way back then? And maybe Fer got Julia involved somehow? Am I thinking too much??? LOL
I'm not convinced that Dario is an undercover agent, but I do think he is on some time of personal mission of revenge. When he told commandante to keep giving false leads and that he needed more time, I think he was referring to needing more time to pressure Elisa about the stolen artifacts. From what has been inferred about"Cobra," it seems to me that he has quite a reputation as a criminal. Now as for who the father is...hmmmmm...we have slim pickins' if we have already met him. There's Ewww-genio, commandante, Jose Luis (since one of the characters made a comment about him being like a father to Leo) and Julia's father (I am personally ruling him out). Maybe we haven't met him???
There was a scene with Leslie (Leo's niece) toward the end. She was outside the school and her buddy drove up in a motorcycle. When he asked how she was, her response was quite negative. She then looked over to some girls who were looking at something on a cellphone and laughing as they looked at Leslie. Leslie then told him that they should get going. Hmmm... wonder what's up with Leslie...
Dario stands, he's obviously very contradicted by what he's findind out. He says: we need to keep them on the false track (sembrar pistas falsas), you keep watching him, I need more time.
And then, the biggest clue that he's one of the good guys is the fact that he didn't reveal to Augusto Leo's true identity.
When Commandante mentioned Julia and then Dario talked about continuing to trick Leo, Iimmediately thought that the kidnapping has nothing to do with the murders. JMO
Urban, thanks for reminding me the cops' names. You'd think I'd be able to remember the girls' name, at the very least.
I totally believe that Majo and Dario can end up together. She'll be in luuuv, willing to remember only the times he protected/ fed her, the family will be against it and so forth. It depends on the writing, but so far we've seen him congused and tormented enough time to think that they're planning to redeem him.
Some stuff to think about, like:
Dario's father. He says that"he will pay with his own blood for what he has done". Could it be that
Uncle/tio rug is his sperm donor? I
Sincerely hope not. I hope dario is an undercover agent. Cuz hes good at scaring the hell outta majo and
Her workin sister. Now undercover people have to be so convincing
At times that you cant tell if they
Are or if theyre not evil. Im still
Workin on if he is or if he ain't. I Hope he ain't. Evil that is. Cuz
Id really like to see him and majo be endgame along with elisa n leo.
So is the rug gonna beat or rape the truth outta sonia? That poor woman, I know she's a cheat but she
Dont deserve that kind of treatment
Especially from someone who k'naps
His nieces and put them through hell and murders his best friend who probly found out what he was doing, don't know what Julia's part In this yet but the truth will set
Viewerville free.
Ok back to work, more later.
It would be interesting if Eugenio is the one Dario is tsrgeting.
I feel for Renata, the girl needs help.
I have money on Eugenio being Dario's father.
Scario is handsome , so I have trouble thinking that Tio Rug is his father.
And I agree Scario is definitely on a revenge quest, regardless if he is or isn't playing both sides.
Princess and Nina, I'm glad you mentioned Eugenio might be Scario's father too.
Seems you are reconsidering Kirby :) And as to your two galan question, it has actually happened (Yanez and Soto in La Verdad Occulta) and I'm sure there are others. In most instances, there is always a second, lesser galan (Yanez/Rulli in Amores Verdaderos and Colunga/Estrella in Pasion. But most times they aren't quite equal.
I will also add my two cents about the dress. I actually liked it as well. I didn't care of the necklace and thought it detracted from the dress.
Diana
Thank you so much for a recap that presented contradictory views, which I hadn't considered before. Is Dario an undercover cop, a guy with revenge on his mind, and/or a career criminal? Is Eugenio his father or not? Whose side is the Commandante on? I guess I tend to jump to conclusions based on a character's looks and whether or not they're cast as a protagonist or antagonist.
Other than the fact that I really appreciate AB's acting skills, I hate "unconventional" endings and GG is famous for them. In fact, I had to stop watching LC and I'm still pissed I wasted good time and effort on YNCELH.
I'm still not convinced they can redeem Dario, but then again there is the GG factor and the writer's spending so much time and effort on these two characters. So does Dario get killed off or what? Steve??
Do you guys want him killed off or redeemed???
Elisa apologizes for Renata, too, but Leo is not offended, he’s too busy gazing at Elisa, assuring her for the 156th time that he’s there for her, to help her and only her.
and everybody's favorite (her lips say slap, but her eyes say bang)
and of course this...
Whatever, dude, you're already in love with another woman already
Yes, indeed, Leo seems to be moving along as fast as Elisa in the romance department. Granted, he has reason to doubt his fiancée...clearly she was involved in something she was keeping secret, even if it wasn't an affair. And you need trust in order to be in love.
And concerning Elisa's outfit, I liked the dress, the necklace, AND her hairdo. Not so much from the front, but this actress looks very lovely in profile with the hair twisted at the nape of the neck. I prefer that look to just wavy, straggling curls hanging down the way it usually is. It was a ballerina look which certainly fits that perfect, athletic little body she possesses.
Thanks Adriana, for sorting through the double-crosses and conflicting alliances for us. Yep, Dario has to be a good guy--he loves his Mom!
But you know who scares me more than Tio Eugenio--FERNANDA! Yikes. I've seen this actress play a wonderfully ditzy lady married to an older man, but in this her cool, hostile demeanor is terrifying. She's doing an excellent job playing "still waters run deep and extremely murky". She looks capable of murder in a heartbeat. Fascinating performance.
Thanks Mama Adriana. Excellent, especially when done wrangling two active little girls all day. Motherhood the a most exhausting career ever. And usually done while balancing another full-time job. Plus volunteering which is recapping to the max.
Please tell me how they'll redeem Dario other than killing him off, which, IMO, isn't really redemption. But he loves his Mom so much, I'll go with redemption, but definitely not an undercover cop.
The necklace, not at all. Not with that dress, it was totally out of place with that dress. The wardrobe
Department has bad taste when it comes to accessorizing. I like the way the dress flowed when she slow walked.
As for killing off dario, GG don't you dare. He is so sweet to momma.
And he wants to kill the sperm donor. I hope its the rug. And I hope he had nothing to do with mom not Being able to walk. Dario hates
His job. And he wishes he could just take majo and leave town. Well
Maybe hopefully a good ending for them. GG must have been hangin around the Turkish folk, they have those horrible endings. That last one was a doozy, eterno love? Dont
Like bad love story endings. Like you said susyQ we need fantasy, joy. No Darkness.
Everybody is hiding something,fern,
Julia's family, vicky, dario, and the other folk. Whoever they are.
Stay safe patio!
