Imperio de Mentiras Lunes 11/2/20, Chapter 29: Hits and Misses
Conflict is never pretty, no matter who is taking part. Words are usually stronger weapons than guns or knives. The combination, though, is often deadly in the worst way. – Dashiell Hammett
Renata and Victoria had a nasty argument with Victoria hurling her usual sarcastic insults. Such as asking “Where are you and the baby going to live, in the cell with Marcelo?” They struggled at the top of the stairs with a predictable result: Renata ended up tumbling down to the marble floor at the foot of the stairs. Victoria and Maria José ran down to her. She was conscious. Victoria shouted to the maid to call for an ambulance. Renata told them to get Marcelo. She had forgotten that he was in the slammer.
She did remember to yell at her mother not to touch her. She would not move, saying she didn't want to lose her baby. Maria José gave her mother a hard look.
Leonardo was at the Álvarez home He spoke to Mario, who was at the airport. It was strange to him that he had not heard from Elisa about going to New York.
Eugenio did not quite believe that Sonia was pregnant. She stared at him from her bed as though she were a zombie in a late-night movie. The doctor said she was in shock and had some disconnexion in her brain. He said that recovery would be slow and they would need to do tests for a better prognosis. Eugenio insisted she be moved to “a better hospital” but the doctor said that this would be risky for her. She needed rest. He congratulated Eugenio on the baby and left the room.
Eugenio leaned over her and said “I know you are faking. You can hear me, can't you?” She closed her eyes slowly, not betraying any fear. “Tell me the truth, The baby is mine, isn't it? Or is it Marcelo's?”
Sara was concerned about Leonardo's mood. She knew he was annoyed with Elisa for not telling him what he thought she should have. She tried to tell him to enjoy what he had with her and that it would eventually resolve itself. One would think that marrying into a police clan would have taught her otherwise.
Nieves sat by her husband's casket still as stone. She almost didn't acknowledge Leslie's arrival and her expression of condolence. She was not even comforting her own daughter, who began to cry because she felt guilty about not having been able to arrange the operation sooner. She did eavesdrop on her as Clara quietly vented to Leslie and gave her a hard, even threatening expression which Leslie did not see. The two girls left the room. Nieves gave out a few crocodile tears when Sara and Leo entered, talking about “If I made a mistake it was to save him. Now I have to go on without Justino, without Julia. Such pain, my God.”
“Try to be strong for Clarita,” Sara said.
“I've lost her, too. My daughter hates me, Sara.”
“We are so sorry,” Leo said. He must have been thinking about her most recent behavior.
Fabricio found Elisa in the terminal and pretended that it was a coincidence that he was also going to New York. She told him that this was strictly business and she planned to return the same day.
Leo called and she stepped away from Fabricio to explain that she was going to New York to resolve a problem at the gallery. He explained where he was and why. She told him to give her condolences to Clara. Her flight was called so she ended the call. However, she told him she was going alone. He smelled a rat, but couldn't figure out which one.
Clara's guilt weighed heavily on her. Enough that she told Leslie that she needed to move. “It's my fault that my sister and my father died.”
Majo paced the waiting area in the hospital. Victoria told her that Renata had internal lesions and was very ill. “She tried to throw me down the stairs.”
“Or course not, Mother. That was an argument that got out of control.”
“This can't go on like this. It can't continue this way. Somebody will end up dead.” Victoria took out her phone.
“Are you calling Elisa?”
“No. Your sister is on her way to New York. We'll tell her later.”
Of course, she was calling Eugenio, which Majo did not understand. She told Victoria she was going to get some coffee.
Eugenio was still sitting beside Sonia's bed. “I know you are faking and I know you can hear me, And that you can talk.” he said. He was coldly determined to repeat this until she gave up the game. “It was you who had them send for Leonardo, wasn't it? Now calm down. We're going to wait until the baby is born and get a DNA test. Hopefully the baby is mine and not Marcelo's.” Sonia became agitated. She looked as though she was going to speak. “No. Don't open your mouth. Don't waste your strength. You know I have your mother.”
Sonia looked at him.
“And you know you don't want her to suffer as you have.” His phone rang. He checked his screen and with a degree of calculation an accountant would envy he answered “My love? What happened?”
Adriana showed Leo a message from Acapulco informing them that Eugenio was there. He said they had to go there to protect Sonia. Leo told José Luis they needed to talk. As they stepped away Adriana heard some cynical, uncaring words from Teresa, who only came to the Álvarez house to avoid a reproach from her husband.
When Teresa walked away Mario arrived, wondering how Adriana could talk to her lover's wife.
Eugenio ended his call and told
Sonia he was leaving.
“I'm going to take care of
something more important than you. Pray for what you most want that
this baby is mine.” He kissed her forehead deliberately and left
her in her bed. After he was gone she made a silent moan of anguish.
Dario woke and fidgeted in his bed.. He noticed that his phone was not on the nightstand. He demanded that his babysitter hand over his.
He used it to call Majo, who was within sight of Victoria. He said he needed to see her.
Mario told Leo what flight Elisa had taken and who else was on it with her. Leo was both confused and upset at this. Adriana then asked if they were going to Acapulco. When Leo said “as soon as possible” she said she would wait outside for them. Leo sensed that something wasn't right between his two colleagues and Mario asked whether he knew that there was something going on between Adriana and José Luis.
When they came off the plane
Elisa asked Fabricio if they could meet later and he said he was
going to stick to her like glue. “Also, I know you're not here
because you want to be.”
“How do you know?”
“I observed you. Your look.
Worried, sad. I'm observing what's going on. Besides, you said that
this guy Dario kidnapped Maria José and is still threatening you. I
don't understand why you don't trust me. Your uncle insisted I come
from London to protect your interests in this business, so whatever
your worries are they are mine, too. Trust me.”
“You are the best friend I
could every have, Fabricio,” she said. “Thanks for everything.
Let's go.”
Victoria gave instructions over the phone to send flowers to Clara's mother. Eugenio arrived just as she finished.
“What happened?”
“It was horrible.” She made her own crocodile tears. “Renata tried to push me down the stairs. It ended up with her falling down them. Do you understand, Eugenio? My own daughter tried to kill me.”
“Renata is very unstable, but I don't want to believe she would try to do you harm.”
“I don't understand!”
“What do the doctors say? How is Renata?”
“They're doing tests, and x-rays. She's very perturbed. Of course she's afraid of losig her baby.”
“Have you decided what to do if the pregnancy continues?”
“It can't continue. Renata is incapable of motherhood; she just demonstrated that. Eugenio, you said you'd help me. Please.”
“Count on me.”
Majo entered Dario's room and
remembered to close the door. He was dying to see her. She was not
pleased to be there or to see him. “It's a shame my uncle didn't
kill you,” she said.
“Why are you talking to me like
that?”
“Because I don't feel anything
for you,” she said. “To think you gave me a star? Why? Why?”
“I have never betrayed you.”
“No? No? You sent Elisa a
video of us in bed.”
“That's not true.”
“Yes, it's true. And you
obligated her to go to New York –“
“It's not true!” He checked
the right side of the bed. “Where is my cell phone? It's supposed
to be here.”
“So who sent it? Who sent that
video?”
“Nobody!”
“No! I saw the message. Whom
did you share that video with?”
“Nobody!”
“That is not true I saw the
video. It came from your phone!”
Leo took his leave of Nieves, who was as dour as usual. He left her in his mother's care. He hugged Clara and left her with his niece.
José Luis visited Marcelo in the jail to tell him that Sonia had been found. Marcelo had suspected that Eugenio was responsible for whatever had happened to her. José Luis tried to get him to talk. He said he would talk to Leonardo but only if Sonia was alright. José Luis was looking for information about the art thefts and anything else about the murders, but Marcelo insisted on seeing Sonia or at least talking to her. José Luis told him she could not talk or come to see him because she was gravely ill. “It's a miracle she's alive. That's why I'm worried about you. Talk.”
Dario would not let her walk out
before telling her that he had seen Elisa at the gallery and that he
did not send her the sex video.
“I can't trust you. You
recorded me without my permission.”
“I swear that I would never do
anything that would hurt you. I love you.”
“This is not love,” she said
as she walked out and closed the door. He tried getting out of bed
but fell back in pain.
Elisa arrived at the art gallery and found out that the shipment was there. She sat at the computer and started working when Fabricio arrived. He wanted a dinner date but she was not in the mood. All he wanted beyond that was to know how much Leonardo knew about this. She told him he didn't know anything. She was afraid of his reaction. She then spilt all the beans to Fabricio about the kidnapping, the blackmail, the paperwork, and the money laundering. Also her anguish at the knowledge that she had been an unwitting accomplice while her father was alive. She started to cry.
This gave him the wedge he needed. “Everything you did has an evidence trail. We have to find a way to make sure the police don't find it. If not, it will all be held against you.”
Leo visited Sonia and told her where Marcelo was and that they had to help him. “You need to corroborate the evidence. Is it true that the archaeological piece came from Eugenio's home? Is it true that he is involved in the trafficking of art and in the murders?”
Sonia looked at Leo, but said nothing.
“Sonia, I'm here to take care of you. But it's important to corroaborate that Eugenio did this to you.” She said nothing. The monitor began beeping.
“Sonia, you don't have to say anything. Just nod. Was it Eugenio who did this to you?”
The doctor came in along with a nurse.
“Effective immediately all visitors are forbidden,” he said. “Leave.”
Leo obeyed the doctor, who then gave instructions to the nurses.
Elisa handed over authentication documents of the items in question to one of Dario's thugs. Fabricio watched from a distance. He talked about finding a way to break the power they had over her. She did not think that was possible and warned that they were very dangerous. He told her she should not try to do this alone. “That's why I'm here at your side.”
Majo went home and threw the star necklace aside. She then took out a bottle which she had hidden it in the wastebasket and drank straight from it, All the horror of the last few days went through her mind. She fell back on the bed and cried.
Elisa and Fabricio were walking along Fifth Avenue when she received the text message about Renata's fall. When Majo didn't answer her phone she called Victoria who was angry at Majo's act of disobedience in informing her of this.
Victoria told her that the doctors didn't know much yet and were doing tests. No news about the pregnancy, either. Elisa then told her she was taking the first flight back home. Victoria started to tell her not to bother but Elisa had already ended the call.
Eugenio invaded Dario's hospital room that night. Both looked primed for a fight. Eugenio was his usual vicious self, telling Dario that he was as stupid as his mother. The mother whom he now had control over. He showed him a video on his cell phone and told him he was going to pay over the matter of Maria José. He then made a call and ordered “Eliminate Marcelo.”
He walked out. Dario shouted “Where are you going?” and tried to get out of bed. The monitors made their high-pitched cries and two nurses came in to attend to him.
Fabricio arrived at Fernanda's apartment to find her in bed with Juanito.
Elisa went straight to Renata's hospital room. Victoria was there. No news yet about the pregnancy but it was likely lost. She suggested that Elisa go home to rest because Renata would be asleep all night from sedatives. She said she would stay with Renata. Elisa was tired so she left.
Adriana prepared a late-night supper for José Luis as a prologue to their illicit acts.
The doctor spoke to Victoria with the news that Renata was still pregnant and that the fetus was not in danger. Victoria was shocked.
Leo was ending a call to Mario
about continued surveillance of the Cantú mansion when Elisa arrived
at his home. She apologized to him and Sara for the lateness of the
hour. Sara left them alone and Elisa told Leo she couldn't go
another minute that day without seeing him.
“You went back to lying to me,”
he said. “Why didn't you tell me you went to New York with
Fabricio? I want to know what is going on.”

So do we think that Victoria will lie and say Ren has lost little Marcelo and then try to comeup with a way to actually get her daughter to lose the baby? Hve her back on the pills, sedated and cray cray?
What will Elisa say now to Leo? Will they break up? I can't believe she trusted Feeble Fab more than the love of her life... Why does she trust this guy so much anyway?
Sonow Eww wants Sonia to live and have the baby, see if it's actually his? Why, so he can neglect, torment, and morally ruin another offspring?
So Teresa has been right about JL all along? I would actually pity her if she weren't the absolute worst!
How many times will Leo find out that Elisa has lied to him before he tells her to take a hike? She should be worried,
They did a good job in the makeup of both Sonia and Dario. They both looked like they had been through what they were supposed to have gone through.
Nieves sure was drowning in self-pity. Ugh!
Sonia being terrorized by Eugenio was the worst and creepiest part of the episode.
If Renata were just strong enough and could keep herself enough under control to just get the heck out. If we only knew if this is truly the best she can be and Victoria has done her best by her daughter or if Victoria has made her like she is with one too many psychiatric meds to keep her calm and under her (Victoria’s) control because it is just easier that way.
Teresa needs to get a lawyer and get out. Who knows how many dalliances JL has had and how many times he used her as a mere sex object with no concern for her wishes or needs. That would be enough to turn anyone into a nasty piece of work if they were not strong enough to leave. It also explains her attitude towards her mother in law. She raised JL.
I somehow think that the relationship between JL and Adriana wasn't planned in advance. I'd like to see him shave, dye his hair, and change his wardrobe. He will be better off without Teresa.
I think we will see the issue of Juanito's paternity being addressed.
As for Renata, I can foresee her being drugged for an abortion. Victoria and Eugenio are wealthy enough to make this happen and pay handsomely to cover it up.
Sonia is in even more danger because she knows too much.
We don't know the history of JL's and Teresa's marriage. There had to have been a time when it wasn't as hellish as it is now. I am not prepared yet to see JL as a total monster because he clearly loves his mother, brother, and daughter. Are these writers making this up as they go along?
How does Fernanda go from being hostile to Juanito to sleeping next to him at night?
The one reigning consistency in this tale is the toxic dynamic in Elisa's family which includes "Uncle" Eugenio, who is a true sadist. What I think he has in mind is to wait until Sonia's baby is born and tested. If the baby is his he will turn him into another Dario if he can; if not he will probably discard the baby. Either way I think he will torture Sonia to death. If you have the stomach for it read about the murder of Junko Furuta. He has the kind of soulless nature to perpetrate something like this.
I thought this was the most depressing episode yet.
Thank you for your screen shots, dialogue and most of all, your humor: "He smelled a rat, but couldn't figure out which one" made me smile as did ",,,with a degree of calculation an accountant would envy". Perfect.
"We are so sorry,” Leo said. He must have been thinking about her most recent behavior.
I can't recall ever seeing so many sorry characters in one TN.
JL can go to hell. He's an abuser pure and simple. We've only seen one act of violence, we don't know what else Theresa has had to endure. And for how long. And Jarifa, your "It also explains her attitude towards her mother in law. She raised JL" made me think. Things aren't always what they seem, are they? I hold no love for Theresa and nothing can explain or excuse her treatment of her daughter but monstrous behavior can be fed. And grow.
The Dario/Majo scene was hard to watch. So, Eugenio must have planted a camera, right? There is no end to Eugenio's depravity.
Terrible times for the trio of Clara, Sonia and Renata.
Sweet Clara was suffering so acutely. I was glad she had some small comfort at the funeral.
But, as terrible as her situation is, Sonia's is almost unfathomable. I'm sure she wishes she died at sea. "So now Eww wants Sonia to live and have the baby, see if it's actually his? Why, so he can neglect, torment, and morally ruin another offspring?" appears to be the terrible truth Adriana Noel.
And I agree Vicky will ensure Renata loses the baby, one way or another. She is despicable.
I don't care about Elisa at this point.
I still care about Leo but he needs to get a clue.
Urban, thank you!
Diana
Teresa is terrible and needs to be punished for her awful parenting skills, but she may have a point about JL. Somehow (Sara?) Leslie has turned out pretty well. She was very sweet to Clara at the wake. Maybe they can get a place with Majo and all get some discount on group therapy. They could all use it.
So Fabricio was brought in to seduce Elisa, which he was cool with, but the money laundering/fake art is more than he bargained for? Seems like telling her cop boyfriend what's going on and letting him help her document all the threats would diminish her culpability for all this, but what do I know?
Kelly
Wow, JL is not the good guy we thought he was.
Does Fab realize Eww is tbe bad guy behind everything?
Why are these evil people always having the upper hand? The Rug has Sonia's mom hidden away somewhere.
Where does he get all of this power
From? And how did he get Gilbert under his Beck n call? What does he have on the popo commissioner(is he the commissioner? Gilbert?). Dirty
Cops are the worst.
Elisa,is just very disappointing to me. She tells poodle boy everything
And leaves leo out cold and hes the bbn one that can help her. Poodle
Tell elisa the evidence leads back to them and he wont let that happen
Does she M know how much trouble she is gonna be in when stuff start
To run over Her and ewwgy and cobra

And his dad(if he's his dad)who has
Poodle hair, and an uncle who has a
Dr heckle and mr hide personality.
Dont bgg yall jus
Victoria would lie and say ren is the one that tried to push her down the stairs. She hates her daughter. At least that one. Wonder Why that is?
I wish something would break in this tale of darkness. Cuz I cannot stand the way it's going. Eww & vic
Seem to be controlling everything evil.
Fer looks like she got caught with her hand in the cookie jar. Nasty
Cookies in that jar.
I really hope that baby is not the
Rugs spawn, they don't fare so well
In life. Can you imagine if dario was a girl? She'd be uber nasty.
Nieves should just go away. I don't
Care. Clara get as far away from ma
As possible.
Something really needs break in this story.
Thank you Urban. Yall Stay safe patio.
Especially grateful for the bits I missed or got glassy-eyed over while watching. Screen shots captured it all. My favorite "and with a degree of calculation an accountant would envy".
Adriana, Noel, I have no doubt that Vic-ious will lie through her rotten teeth and make sure Ren doesn't have her baby. The witch is trying to convince everyone that Ren tried to kill her and I'm sure that she will convince whoever she can that Ren is a danger to herself and others, especially a baby.
Jarifa, "Sonia being terrorized by Eugenio was the worst and creepiest part of the episode." ITA! What I'm wondering is how Sonia was able to stay calm enough to keep her monitors from going haywire. Leo only asked her if Ewww was responsible for what happened to her and the monitors beeped off the wall. Explain that Sonia!
Urban, "I somehow think that the relationship between JL and Adriana wasn't planned in advance." I don't think so either! AND "I'd like to see him shave, dye his hair, and change his wardrobe" THAT would be a great improvement! I was taking a close look at him and he really isn't that bad looking is you can imagine him without the beard.
Diana, "I can't recall ever seeing so many sorry characters in one TN." Me neither! And you can believe ANYTHING any of them say! AND "So, Eugenio must have planted a camera, right?" No, I'm pretty sure it was Dario who recorded that "session" with Majo. Aside from being a heartless criminal, he is also a pervert!
Kelly, "Maybe they can get a place with Majo and all get some discount on group therapy. They could all use it.' Now that sounds like a very good idea; my only concern would be that the therapist might go cray-cray with all the mess she/he would have to clean up.
Susanlynn, "Does Fab realize Eww is tbe bad guy behind everything?" A sof right now, Fab seems to be clueless about Ewww's "business", but I still don't trust him!
Nina, "Why are these evil people always having the upper hand?" Uhmmm, because they want us to throw things at our TVs? OR they want to drive us as cray-cray as the characters?? :-)
Oh Nina, your guess about who the baby-daddy is is just about as good as mine. If it does have even a drop of Ewww blood, the kid is doomed in a world of darkness. And, oh my, with a mother like Fer, he has no salvation!
And yes leo needs to start getting some clues. But if Andras Palacios
Has covid are they gonna halt the
Shooting of this show? I must say the health of these people are much more important than this show. They can Halt the whole thing so nobody dies From this horrid plague. Their lives are much more important than this show.
Duh. He must have gotten Covid, and rather than him be conspicuously missing for 6 episodes, they just shot him and let him play his part from his Hospital bed. Only reason that makes a modicum of sense.
Genius. TeleNovela people Genius.
We don't have backstory on this family to really know what could make Victoria hate Renata as she seems to. I have theorized that Victoria might have come up in the world perhaps not in the preferred way, that Renata was a behavioural problem from toddlerhood, or that -- like Maleny Santibanez -- she is being drugged and gaslit because of something she knew about or did. It could be a while before we get those answers, especially if this series runs more than 120 episodes.
As to Fabricio and Dario, I think Dario knows that Fabricio is his half-brother but Fabricio is in the dark about this. I think he is also less intelligent than Dario which explains why he is easily duped by Eugenio.
Re Covid, I've said this before: This went into production in early March, so they could have had 80+ completed episodes before it began airing in Mexico. Suspending production for even a month would therefore not disrupt what we see by very much. LQNPA was produced much closer to the debut so that when Jorge Salinas became ill it disrupted production and caused a rewrite that likely impacted the rest of the story and its ending. We did get JS in a short scene in most of the 25 episodes in question and those scenes were shot in his actual hospital room. Since he was in for a (non-contagious) pulmonary embolism this was relatively safe to do. No such option now.
Now shes stuck there. And Julia looks like an old timer from the hills
This is my 4th mex-novela with Boyer as a protagonist. She was smart and strong as a Montserrat, Ana Lucia and Lucia Borges. But Elisa Cantu is so stupid and weak.
Sorry for my bad English.
