Weekend Discussion 8/13/21: Toxic Mothers, 4th Edition
It's been a while since the previous edition of this important class of character. These are the most poisonous women we ever meet in our favorite adult stories. They inflict irreparable damage sometimes for envy, sometimes for greed, and always for control. Their favorite weapons are all psychological, so they are more lethal than their male counterparts. I have seen all these, but I know I have missed some for most of the actresses on this list.
Telemundo must have provided at least a few of these maternal monsters, so I hope someone provides their lists at some point. I had to have missed some Televisa ones as well. At the end of this list are the links to the three previous lists of the toxic mothers under our microscope.
Milagros Fuentes / Helena Rojo – El Color de la Pasión (2014)*
One of the worst helicopter mothers, she is likely responsible for the neurosis of her younger son, Federico, who committed suicide in an early episode following the rejection of Rebecca, the main villana of this story. She followed this up by attempting to control her survivig son, Marcelo, who fought back. Had he not decided to investigate Federico's death he would have fled to Spain to get away from her. She forced herself into Marcelo's apartment and tried to force him into a marriage with Daniela, whom she could control. She also attempted to sabotage his relationship with Lucia.
Will not reveal her final fate here, as this series is being rerun right now.
Yolanda de Castro / Carmen Salinas – Mi Corazón es Tuyo (2014)*
Guilty of convincing her daughter that she had to marry money despite her having an MBA from Harvard. Also child abuse, home invasion, and fraud.
Saw the light and en route to redemption at the end.
Lillian Palacios / Azela Robinson – Vino el Amor (2016)*
Guilty of favoring her older daughter, leading to the estrangeent and mental illness of the younger one who killed her sister in the prologue. Also guilty of mistreating her grandchildren, especially in aiding and abetting the mental abuse of Fernanda by bribing an unethical psychologist.
Accidentally
caused the death of Graciela in the finale and went to prison for
it.
Miriam de Becker / Julieta Egurrola – Caer en Tentación (2017)
Guilty of emotional abuse, slander, and financial abuse of nuera Raquel, including attempts at turning her children against her and attempting to assume control over her son Damián's medical situation; manipulation of nieta Mia, conspiracy to frame Bebo Galindo, Nacho, Santiago, and Raquel. Guilty of psychological abuse of Raquel with regard to custody of Benjamín, reneging on Raquel's offer regarding custody of Benjamín.
Guilty of sexual and emotional abuse of Damián (time period and duration unknown), attempts at manipulating Damián while he was ill, barging into his home to set up his medical bed in the master bedroom rather than the ground floor to annoy Raquel and despite this being against Damián's best interests.
Offed herself – slit her wrists – in the finale.
Roberta Monroy de Uzúa / Daniela Castro – Me Declaro Culpable (2018)*
Guilty of infantilizing her young adult daughter, forcing said daughter back into a relationship she wanted to end, making death threats to a woman she felt threatened by, serving as an accomplice to Julián in drugging her daughter Natalia's tea, blackmailing a doctor to do an IVF procedure to have another baby, attempted murder of Alba, playing the pathetic to hold onto a husband who was fed up with her, murdering the doctor who tried to give her a reality check. Attempted murder of Mauro (her toxic father), attempt to frame Franco for domestic violence, assault (Julián, with a rock), bribing lies out of a doctor, and multiple fashion felonies.
Took her own life via poison at the end of the story.
Catalina Creel / Paz Vega – Cuna de Lobos (2019 remake)*
Guilty of murdering her husband, framing her stepson for assault, murdering her son's lover, setting up her daughter-in-law to be raped, murder of husband's first wife (before episode 1), manipulation of both son and stepson, kidnapping of grandson, mental torture and attempted murder of nuera..
Unlike in the original, she got away with it all.
Victoria Robles de Cantú / Leticia Calderón – Imperio de Mentiras (2020)
Guilty of grievous mental health abuse of oldest daughter, bribing doctors to prescribe inappropriate drugs and perform a hysterectomy on said daughter. Mistreated two younger daughters, killed their father. Became accomplice of Eugenio, criminal mastermind who had molested the adolescent Renata (yes, she knew about that).
Ended up en route to prison.
Gloria Ortiz / Gabriela Carrillo – Ringo (2019)
Guilty of greed, parental alienation, gaslighting and also neglecting her son, bringing false charges against his father in a custody fight.
Arrested for drug smuggling in the US, with the likelihood of 15 years in the slammer.
Andrea Espinoza / Erika Buenfil – Te Doy La Vida (2020)
Guilty of aiding and abetting Ernesto/Miguel in preventing Elena's divorce petition. Refused to listen to Elena's descriptions of his toxic behavior. Tried to break up Gabriela's romance with Samuel. Tried to interfere in Irene's life as well after having favored her younger daughters for years.
Eventually saw the light and later joined Elena and Gabriela in their business.
Ivana Castillio de Gonzales / Marisol del Olmo – Te Acuerdas de Mi (2020)
Guilty of massive emotional abuse of teen daughter, possibly since daughter's childhood. Also of various acts of cruelty to Edy, her daughter's boyfriend. May have murdered her sister prior to the opening episode (not confirmed). Massively snobbish and greedy.
Arrested and imprisoned for money laundering at the end of the story.
Minerva Larraguibel / Luz Maria Jerez – Quererlo Todo (2020)
Abandoned her son to be raised by machista ex-husband, leading to son's future mental illness and homicidal tendencies. Witnessed him killing two grave robbers and said nothing. Grossly snubbed any and all who were of “low class,” bribed a lab employee to provide false DNA test results in an attempt to prevent Angelita from inheriting anything from her putative father's estate. May have contributed to the mental breakdown of her ex's best friend. Addicted gambler as well.
Died of massive liver damage due to alcoholism.
Eva de Montiel / Susanna Dosamantes – Si Nos Dejan (2021)
As of Episode 44: Guilty of emotional abuse of daughter Alicia both past and present, meddling in everything regarding her marriage, divorce, and family. Aids toxic ex-yerno in his abuse of Alicia in exchange for dinero to feed her gambling addiction. Hired private investigator to dig up dirt on Alicia's younger suitor with request to invent something if he found no scandal. Story still in progress (midpoint at this writing), so Karmageddon TBD.

Finally, since there are actresses on this list who have multiple Toxic Mother roles, whom would you nominate as their queen?
Labels: disenando, embajador, nos-dejan, primetime, Univision, weekend
You do such an outstanding job of picking the best of the worst! Some of them make my stomach crawl! I don't believe I would even be able to pick out my top choice as they are all SO BAD!!
Thanks for taking the time to write this up..
I am trying to figure out if anyone will ever top that.
Urban, for me the absolute queen will always be María Rubio as the original Catalina Creel. The ORIGINAL script allowed her to be the the queen of evil mothers. The second version was a great tale, but her crimes could not hold a candle to the depravity Catalina Creel committed in the plot of the original.
I did see some of the original Cuna and the whole deception over the eye that Catalina didn't actually lose was diabolical. I want to finish it someday to understand her final fate. The remake didn't have the luxury of time to develop that aspect of the story. The big headscratcher was why the new Catalina didn't have a glass eye made, as she had a modeling career prior to her marriage.
I'm still trying to find 'Si Dios me quita la vida'.
Meddling Eva will get her Karma in "DEJAN".
My choices are Daniela Castro – Mi Pecado whose icy cold cruelty was crippling. Also the amazing Leticia Calderón for both Imperio de Mentiras and En Nombre del Amor where her icy stare could melt steel. Calculating and heartless all 3 characters.
Dishonerable mention goes to Marisol del Olmo – Te Acuerdas de Mi and Diana Bracho for Fuego en la Sangre.
All are incredible actresses who can all play protagonist and antagonist without missing a beat.
Urban, if you do have the chance please do try and watch Vencer el desamor. Taut and well written the stories are compelling. Aside from that, Jarifa's recaps outshone the episodes themselves.
And yes, Eva does not deserve a happy ending. At all!
Thanks so much Urban.
Diana
I didn't watch many of novelas you mentioned, but I did watch a few.
While all the ones listed are hateful, I think the cruelest and most vicious human incubator ( I refuse to call any of these witches "mom".) was Catalina Creel.
IIRC, all of the human incubators, twisted as it was, "loved" at least one of their children though they tried to manipulate them to follow what they thought would be best for their son/daughter. The only exception (IMO) is Eva; so I would nominate her to be in the top 2 of the list.
I'm so glad to see that you selected Jacqueline Andere from 'La Otra'. !!
She is such an EVIL MOTHER !! I'm watching 'La Otra' again, and I am only on Episode 8; and already I want to reach through my phone screen and strangle her nice and slowly......and watch her tongue pop out!!
I had forgotten how sad this novela is. I'd probably stop watching it if it weren't for Juan Soler at his best.
I try to keep reminding myself that the antagonists make a novela interesting just like the protagonists. But it's so hard sometimes when a character is especially EVIL !!
I wonder who you would pick as the evilest one of all ?????
It was very amusing how far the woman will go.
