Bahar

Oh wow, Kat, you did a summary of the first few episodes! Super ultra mega thank you!!! When I watched tonight I felt I had a much better grip on what was going on.

I’m enjoying the lead actress a lot. I was wondering why Bahar has to ask her husband for money. Does he hold the purse strings? I mean, in a marriage you would discuss with your spouse how money would be spent, but not ask for money. And then it turned out it was only the amount a designer purse cost!

Babchita – I too was surprised by the songs in Spanish the night before. It somehow takes away from their authenticity, but I did admire how they fit the words to the song, plus they’d have to pay somebody to sing them which I’m guessing would be more than the cost of the dubbers. Or maybe not! Anyway, the end result was pretty good.

This is another quickie. Cris rips Alberto to shreds and slaps him at the event. The press didn’t seem to notice. She tells him it’s over.

Blanca and Isabel have a heart to heart about Esteban, including Blanca saying that her child with him died. Isabel advises her to speak with Esteban as he’d asked.

Cold as ice, Sara doesn’t care about her husband telling Cris what happene4d between them. She snarls that Alberto shouldn’t mess up the big event.

Gloria is drunk off her keister. She attacks Valeria and insists she sign back over her properties. She ends up cutting her hand on a wine glass.

Marga and Ana talk. Ana doesn’t want to tell Carlos her history with Alberto, saying it’s not fair to Cris.

Cris has packed her stuff. She gets nasty with Alberto, saying she’s going to make sure he loses Velvet.

Carlos tells Sara he doesn’t like Ana’s closeness with Alberto. Later Carlos has someone buy all the Carmen Garza dresses at Alondra.

Mateo tells Marga he was nervous, but now he wants to be her husband and a father.

Cris tells all to Barbie, who advises her to use this to get him eating out of her hand.

Marga gives Clara a tongue lashing, saying she’s behaving with Mateo just like she did with Pedro. Once she has the guy, she doesn’t want him anymore.

Mateo proposes, producing a big rock that he’d shown to Marga earlier. She turns him down, confessing that she’s not pregnant. He’s fed up with her, saying it’s over for him.

Valeria votes with Enrique against Alberto. The plan is to get Raul to revise the old, successful Velvet dresses and to do it before Raul’s own line is ready. Raul says they don’t know how hard this is to do, and he calls Ana in to give her that designing job.

Ana tells Isabel she needs to tell Alberto she’s his mother. He deserves to know.

Cris shows up at Ana’s apartment [the nerve of this b%$ch]. She tells her Alberto has a lover and wants to know if she knows who it is. Carlos shows up.

Barbie tells Mateo Clara is involved with Enrique. [This idiocy is based on catching Enrique being kind, a real departure for him. He found Clara crying in his office.]

Carlos, all huge grins, tells Ana she needs to open her own business. She’ll need an investor, of course,

Cris shows up at Velvet. She tells Alberto she went to Ana about how he’s been cool toward her.

Bahar #4

A few notes from this episode. Timur refuses to pay for the class Bahar wants to take to resume her residency. He belittles her and tells her she isn't thinking straight. She points out that she had better grades when they were students together. She recalls the price suegra Nevra paid for the designer bag, 200.000 liras, precisely the amount needed for her class. She buys a knockoff replica from the trunk of some guys car and switches it out. Voila. She official changes her name back to her maiden name and enrolls in the class, paying in cash. Now she is studying secretly around the house while cooking, sweeping the empty pool, etc. the day of the exam coincides with her daughters award ceremony for the art competition she won. Bahar is a no show which makes Umay very upset. Her friend Parla has an unsupportive mother and a father in the US so she also has nobody their to celebrate her second place finish.

Aziz Uras, Bahar's son, is also taking the test. He. Scores a decent 75, Bahar gets a 79.4. he asks why didn't you tell me, we could have been studying buddies. He is happy for her. Unfortunately Rengin recognizes Bahar's name and photo during the resident application process and tells the director of the hospital that look, she has a liver transplant, she won't be able to handle the rigors of residency. Rengin later tells Timur about it and says your wife does not belong in my hospital. I think she is being shortsighted. If Bahar finds out I'm sure that divorce Timur keeps promising will happen fast.

Speaking of the divorce, I bet their is a nefarious reason he isn't getting one. I think his father left so.ething of value to Bahar in his will. Mom and Timur discuss it during a conversation. It's either the house or a lot of money, otherwise I'm sure suegra would be all about getting rid of Bahar and gaining Rengin as a daughter in law.

At a post op appointment with Evren Bahar discusses her failed attempt to get the residency, she was refused because of her transplant status. Evren tells her he will be soon working at that hospital, which she is happy for. Evren goes to the chief of staff, the same guy that Rengin Influenced to disqualify Bahar, about his job offer. The new residents are discussed, chief is still trying to fill some spots and mentions the candidate with the best score, Bahar. Evren accepts the position on the condition he gets to have some say in his team, as he pointedly stares at Bahar's application. Chief agrees and a deal is struck....

velvet #43

Thank you for getting us started, novelera. Enjoy your trip.

I was sort of surprised that Albert came clean so quickly and while they were still at the event. It was also surprising that this wasn’t caught by the reporters. There were a few onlookers though.

Albert doesn’t even know his mother’s real name. They kept that from him, too. So, Juanita, you weren’t confused about Isabel’s name, just misled.

Ha, Gloria never showed up to the desfile and threw herself a drunken pity party instead. She spilled that she’s being blackmailed. It would be nice if Val followed up on that.

Albert finally realizes something is wrong with Cris. She’s not the sweetheart he thought she was. She explodes when things don’t go her way. Ha, Albert feels he also cheated on Ana.

Enrique is helping Valeria with Gloria. Is he sincere or doing this out of self-interest? He keeps pressing her for info on her mother.

At least Sara has more sense than her idiot husband. She hasn’t told Carlos that Albert and Ana had a long-term relationship.

Valeria tells Enrique about Gloria’s drunken meltdown. He’s sympathetic. He mentions getting Glo treatment somewhere. Once again, he tries squeezing info from Val. He knows she’s hiding something. They kiss and Val’s lipstick ends up on his neck and collar.

Albert asks Val what’s going on with Gloria. She wouldn’t miss the desfile or sign over her shares without asking for something in return. Val deftly evades the truth. Albert says Val has his support at Velvet and with Gloria. She asks about Cris. He tells her Cris wasn’t feeling well last night but everything is okay.

Alondra orders more Carmen Garza dresses—asap!

Carlos keeps two Garza dresses and orders the rest burned.

I don’t know how Ana is going to finish the Carmen Garza order and the classic Velvet update line all at once.

Barbie notices Enrique’s collar after he helps Clara and she jumps to the wrong conclusion about them. Nevertheless, Enrique’s a cheater. “Lipstick on your collar told a tale on you…” - RIP Connie Francis.

Does Cris suspect Ana again?

Hopefully Rodrigo will give Ana all the info he has on Carlos before it’s too late for her to save herself.

I’ve been traveling through diziland for a long time now. I’m learning Turkish, so I prefer to watch the originals rather than the dubbed. Often there’s a lot lost in translation. Then there’s the horrible cuts they make to the episodes.

One of the things I love about dizis is the music. I see some of you enjoy the songs, too. I don’t know why Telemundo changes the soundtracks. I guess Uni has more money to pay for the originals. When I watch a dizi on Uni or Telemundo, I do my best to post links to the songs with translations in each episode.

This is what we missed so far:

The poem Bahar recited to herself at her welcome home party was Denge/Balance by Turgut Uyar. Weird that they placed someone singing it in Spanish in the middle. Here is the original clip. You can turn on CC for English: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d-JdoLj4xus

bahar

Thanks, Kat, for the recap of #4

Of note: Gulcicek brought Aziz some rice. The tradition is to eat one grain for good luck on an exam. I wonder if Bahar ate any rice. Loved Bahar’s happy dance when she found out she and Aziz passed.

velvet

Many thanks, novelera, for this "quickie." I found it very helpful, pointing out to me things I had missed or failed to understand.

One thing I did notice (as did you) was that the press, usually so intrusive and observant, somehow failed to notice Cris having a hissy fit and yelling at Alberto while at the fashion event.

I was surprised when some guy I didn't recognize (and probably wasn't supposed to) bought all four remaining Carmen Garza dresses. I didn't know that Carlos had told him to do this and undoubtedly paid for the dresses and for the guy who bought them. And why did Carlos say he'd keep two dresses and burn the rest?

I've just about had it with Clara. Marga perceptively points out that Clara is responding to Mateo the same way she did with Pedro: dropping them as soon as she has won them. And Clara replies that she doesn't want to get married to Mateo because "we all get bored being with the same person." Too bad Mark didn't hit on her instead of on Cris.

Isabel tells Ana that as soon as she's better, she'll tell Alberto that he's her son. Uh oh--I found myself fearing that that may signal she'll die before she has a chance to tell him. All signs so far have suggested that she won't ever get better. (But would the writers really pass up having a super emotional "reveal" scene?)

IIRC, in the episode's very last scene, Cris is asking herself who Alberto's lover is. She recalls that Alberto has been cold to her for quite a while, whereas he's known Sara for only a short time. So it's not Sara. But then who could it be? Ana! (and with that, the episode ends).

Velvet

Juanita I agree with all your points. Especially the last scene.

I noticed the lipstick Val left behind. Too bad Clara gets blamed for it, but I now want someone better for Mateo. I have a soft spot for him. Yes he was a playboy, but it seems he actually wants something more. Clara doesn't deserve him. I think his faults can be laid at his upbringing.

I don't know why Carlos wants to trash tow of the Carmen designs. He is billed as the antagonist so I know he is the bad guy.

Barbie is always beautifully dressed. If Velvet sold her style clothes I bet they would be successful. I don't get wearing formal long dresses everywhere, but if your husband is in fashion you may as well, right.

velvet

Thanks, dondi, for pointing out that "Guadeloupe Perez" was the false name Alberto had been told was his mother's name. I think I finally caught on, but I'm glad you confirmed it.

I really dislike Enrique, so I'm inclined to believe that whatever he does, even good things, he does out of self-interest.

I too wondered how Ana can finish both the Carmen Garza order and the Velvet update at the same time.

And in answer to your question, I'm under the strong impression that last night's episode ended with Cris deciding that Alberto's lover had to be someone he knew for longer than he did Sara, and she realized it could be Ana.

Bahar

You did a recap, Kat! Yay! I hadn’t caught that bit about a possible inheritance, so it makes more sense that Timur would stick around for that. It does seem like something he could tell Rengin, though. She’s obviously out of patience.

Dondi – What’s Turkish like? Is it hard? Did watching the dizis inspire you to learn it?

Bahar
Dondi, I'm also wondering about Turkish. I'm intimidated about the alphabet difference. I finished the Spanish module on Duolingo and am now relearning French. But maybe I should try Turkish. Where do you find the show in it's undubbed format?

Maggie, it was a short sentence when mom was complaining to Timur to control his wife, they were sitting on the couch. His idea of placating her was to use his frequent flyer miles and go on a vacation with her friend. If course he wasn't planning to go.

She also mentioned in this episode that it bothered her the only thing she had to her name was a cellphone. No car, bank account, credit cards etc. I imagine after her buying spree from the previous episode that he cut her off. He obviously controls the purse strings and she makes every penny stretch. She even painted the kitchen cabinets herself rather than having a kitchen remodel done by professionals. I can't wait till she sticks it to him, and she better not be a doormat like Karsu in the other dizy we are watching.

Another interesting scene was when Gülçiçek brought cooked rice in a pouch for Aziz Uras for good luck and Nevra insulted her and her bourgeois beliefs. I get the impression Gülçiçek sells food to augment her nest egg. Bahar gobbled down what Uras didn't eat.

bahar

I keep falling behind. I do like the actors in this one, but some of the scenes are overwrought. In comparison, I like Karsu much better.

I did enjoy Bahar's shopping spree and the MIL's horrified realization of how much she'd spent on, was it boots? I thought designer shoes, but it looked like boots when she waltzed out for the evening.

Bahar's children now seem supportive and less like spoiled brats. The MIL is intolerable, and it's hard to believe anyone could have put up with her for so many years. Guess it's more common in Turkey for parents to live with their adult offspring. I think I'd stake out a decent sized cardboard box and set it up somewhere, along with a tin can for begging, rather than move in with my son.

Bahar

I get the impression that the house likely belonged to the deceased Aziz and may have been left jointly to his wife and son (or perhaps Bahar). Yes, Nevra is the MIL from hell, kinda like Hulya in mi familia.

I thought her shoes were high heels, could very well have been boots. I would lump the 2 in the same category if I complained about the cost of someone's footwear.

Umay, the daughter, did get a bit snippy with teenager angst because Bahar missed the awards ceremony, but I blame that on Bahar. Since they are keeping Umay's art class a secret from dad, Bahar should have told her that she was also keeping a secret and that she also was taking the placement exam. I'm sure daughter would have understood.

velvet

My favorite part was when Alberto decided that Cris wasn’t as sweet as he thought she was, which was right after she got mad that he cheated on her. She has issues but my dude, you deserved this rage. Dummy.

Good thing Ana has Ric on board with the secret sewing team. She’ll need the help. (And my apologies to Ric for making the same assumptions that Luisa did. If a boy likes sewing, he should sew, without judgement. I used to be good at it but also wanted to take a drafting class in high school but didn’t because it was all boys. We should be over that nonsense now). But Ric better be good because they have a lot of work to do. Not sure how Cris thinks Ana has time to have an affair.

K

velvet

Rodrigo, where are you when we really need you? Ana brushed you off when you wanted to meet with her with the big reveal about Carlos. You need to persist, buddy! Ana is getting painted into a corner by the controlling Carlos. He's hell bent on getting her out of Velvet because he senses the connection between Alberto and her.

OT Turkish language

Hi Maggie, nice to see you on the Telemundo patio. Yes, dizi watching inspired me to learn Turkish. I would say it’s a bit of a challenge. The sentence structure is different from English: subject/object/verb. And it’s an agglutinative language; suffixes, sometimes multiple, are attached to words to show tense, possession, direction or location. The alphabet has letters that we don’t use in English, but that’s not much of a problem. Before the Republic and Atatürk, Ottoman Turkish used the Arabic alphabet.

Kat, you can find dizis and movies in Turkish on YouTube (free) that have English subtitles Some have them available auto generated if you click on CC. Many times, they don’t have any subtitles or captions at all. There are other sites, free and paid, that have English subtitles. You need to be careful of some sites because of possible malware or viruses. All these can be hit or miss with English translations. That’s why it’s good to know some Turkish.

velvet #44 part 1

This was an episode of confrontations!

Cris tells Albert he made her live through hell. She admits she went crazy with jealousy and hatred. She was ready to destroy him, take Velvet away from him and kill Sara if necessary. Then she thought about it. You don’t care about Sara as much as I think you do, she says, you just met her, and you’ve been acting strange towards me for a long time. That’s why I got in touch with the person you always count on. The person you love, take care of and defend—Ana.

Albert doesn’t like Cris involving Ana. Cris knows Ana is just an employee. But you should thank her, Cris says, she made me question many things about us. Ana made me understand whether my love or pride was more important. In this case, love prevailed. I want to give you another chance. I’ll tell dad not to take Velvet from you. Albert utters a surprised thank you.

Cris says, I’m doing this for us. I’ll fight for you. I hope you’ll do the same for the family we want to build. But she wants something else for her forgiveness: break all ties with Sara Sahgun. Albert replies, I can’t do that. We have a contract, they will sue us for millions. Cris says her dad can cover that. Albert notes Velvet’s reputation would be completely in question [or as the English sub notes “in the toilet.”] Is your reputation worth more than your marriage and Velvet, Cris asks.

Albert is grateful but… Cris is sticking to her conditions. She tells him he should be on his knees thanking her. He tries promising not to see Sara again. Besides he can’t break the contract himself, not even Enrique would allow it. Cris says she can handle Enrique. She cautions Albert to think carefully about this.

Ana tells Carlos she likes his idea but it’s not the time to leave Velvet. She wants the opportunity to update Velvet’s classics. It would be good for her portfolio. Carlos reminds her she wasn’t the first choice for the project. Raul handed it off to her. He asks, why give your talent to a company when you could be developing your own brand? Carlos keeps pressuring her. She finally tells him to stop. She has to go home and help with Isabel. He pretends to be understanding but there’s something simmering below the surface, don’t you think?

Clara is whining to Marga when Mateo shows up and demands to talk to her alone. He wastes no time accusing her of being Enrique’s lover. Barbie saw them in the office. Clara answers with a well-deserved bofetada. She fires back, how could you possibly think I’m that kind of woman?

Mateo brings up Pedro and the fact she was with both of them for a while. She defends herself saying she would never be with a married man. Again, Mateo brings up Pedro, mentioning his son. She replies that it happened before she dated Pedro. Clara is furious. She runs off to find Barbie and tell her off. Mateo and Marga head off to stop her.

Barbie and Enrique are heading towards the elevator. Enrique goes back to fetch his phone. Clara gets off the elevator and confronts Barbie. It was you, you liar. I’m not dating your husband! I’m tired of you disrespecting me! I don’t date married men. I’m not that kind of woman. If you’re looking for your husband’s lover, look somewhere else!

Ah, Barbie thinks Clara knows who this woman is. She grabs Clara’s hair and demands to know. Clara struggles to break free. Marga and Mateo show up and separate the women. Enrique returns and asks, what’s going on? Barbie makes up a lie about Clara apologizing for a call she didn’t make. Barbie sneers at Clara that she can help her with that tomorrow. Barbie and Enrique leave. Clara does not want to speak with Mateo.

velvet #44 part 2

Looks like Gloria is thinking of pouring herself a drink but Cris and Albert return home. Cris goes to the bedroom and Albert asks Glo how she’s doing. It’s no big deal, she replies. Albert says Val filled him in. Glo badmouths her daughter, your father was right, she shouldn’t be in the company. She asks Albert for a favor--Tio Esteban is back in NY, and he wants to talk to you. Why should I talk to him, Albert replies, he’s never been interested in me. Glo answers, he’s family and your father was fond of him. Glo says at least listen to him. Albert says he’ll think about it.

Glo texts Esteban—It’s done. Esteban is at lunch with his sister, Pilar. She wants to know Gloria’s secret. Not so fast, Esteban replies, I know you. If I do that, I’ll lose my power over you. Pilar offers a toast—welcome to NY, brother. You have my full support. You know I’m a very important person in the fashion world. But everything is a quid pro quo. Esteban knows and he’ll help Pilar get into Velvet. But he wants to help himself first.

Esteban gets a text from Blanca. She wants to see him. Pilar tells him to be careful. He could use Blanca to find out what happens at Velvet, but that’s all. Don’t make the mistake of getting involved with the “costurerita”.

Blanca pours herself a drink. She thinks about Isabel’s advice regarding Esteban. She looks at some old pictures. If you had loved me, she says, you would have never left me.

Glo did get that drink. Valeria walks in and scolds, again, mom? You’re on antibiotics. Glo says she needs to relax. That’s not relaxing you, Val replies, it’s killing you. You need help. Help, Glo asks, what are you talking about? I’m talking about rehab, Val answers, you have an alcohol problem, and you can’t handle it. Of course Glo denies it, she can stop whenever she wants.

Val is frustrated. You’re fooling yourself! You need to get away from here! NY is toxic when it comes to addictions! Go to the Hamptons. [does she mean a rehab there? There are some.] Everybody is suspicious about your condition. I don’t care what everybody says, Glo snaps back, I’m not locking myself up in a place with nothing to do.

Val says she’s not asking. If Glo doesn’t go, she will take action. I will refer you to a clinic without your consent. You wouldn’t dare, Glo replies, I’m your mother. That’s why I’m doing it, Val answers. Glo throws her wine in Val’s face and snarks, see? I can stop drinking whenever I want. Val is resolute. She tells mom, you’re leaving tomorrow. I don’t want to see you here anymore. I own everything now. Glo tells Val that she won’t let her get away with this. Hit me if you want, Val replies, it will make my decision stronger.

Susan and Pedro are on the couch. She’s showing him places in Brooklyn. Pedro is shocked at the rent. Susan accuses him of not wanting to leave. Pedro says the Velvet rent is cheap. She replies, if you love me, you should support my business. He tells her she has his support. [when will this nightmare end for viewerville?]

Susan cozies up to him and says, the kid’s asleep, why don’t you give me some affection? This is sickening. She even gave the kid some extra flu medicine so he wouldn’t wake up. She kisses Pedro. He responds to the kisses, but eventually he feels sick and runs away. [unfortunately, I have to recap so I can’t run.]

velvet #44 part 3

Marga comes to see Ana. Ana tells her about Cris’s visit. Cris and Albert had a fight, she thinks he’s cheating. Marga answers, at least she doesn’t know it’s you. Was she trying to get information from you? Ana replies, she asked me what I would do if the man I love was seeing someone else. She asked if she should kill her or forgive him. Marga asks, what did you say? I told her that if she’s unhappy with Alberto, she should leave him but think carefully before doing anything.

Ana tells her then Carlos came, and Cris left. That’s good, Marga says. Not really, Ana replies, Carlos asked me to leave Velvet. Marga is alarmed. Do you want to leave? Ana says no, but after what Cristina said, she’s considering it. Marga responds, life is giving you a second chance with Carlos, I think you should tell him the truth if he’s starting to get suspicious. Ana doesn’t want to risk a jealous scene.

Marga talks about Clara. In 72 hours, she went from thinking she’s pregnant to breaking up with Mateo. Ana is surprised. Marga makes the point, why not tell the truth? Why is life unfair? He had the ring ready to go and… Ana asks if they really broke up. Marga says she doesn’t know but she asks Ana, what do you want to do? Why don’t you tell Carlos the truth? What if he finds out on his own and dumps you? [we know that would be for the best.]

Marga wonders if Ana is in love with Carlos. Ana says no. She’s great with Carlos but she needs more time to forget Albert. Marga playfully mocks her then notes, when someone stays in our heart, it’s harder to get them out. Because we know what it’s like to truly love someone. [We know Marga is also referring to herself with Pedro.]

A woman shows up at Carlos’ place. He asks, did you check the information I sent you? Did you learn it? She answers that this isn’t her first time. Carlos instructs, I want you to put on makeup and do your hair like her. He shows his phone. She nods. He tells her there’s a dress and makeup in the bedroom. And one more thing he asks…what is your name? She responds, Ana. Ana Velasquez. Carlos approaches the woman and kisses her.

This becomes some sick sexual cosplay. The woman is wearing a wig and makeup to resemble Ana. I think she’s wearing one of the Garza dresses. How do I look, she asks. Carlos says she’s missing something and puts a religious medal around her neck. She pretends to be Ana and she’s so happy to be there with him. I was dying to see you and touch you, she whispers. I want you to know I like you very much. I’m dying to be with you.

Carlos darkens. He grabs the woman by the throat. She looks terrified. Are you scared of me, he asks. She says no. He growls, then show me I’m not wasting my time by being so patient with you. Okay? She responds, I’m yours. He becomes an animal. [I hope nothing bad happens to her and she gets paid well.]

Blanca tells Isabel she’s meeting with Esteban. She has mixed feelings about it. Isabel tells her she needs to clear up the past without feeling the pain she used to feel. You need to know the truth even if it is painful. Blanca thanks Isa.

Cris tells Barbie she’ll fight for Albert. No one is taking him from her. Barbie approves and notes that this was just a fling. Cris is not so sure. Barbie warns her that Sara is dangerous. Not more than me, Cris replies, if someone messes with Alberto, I’ll kill myself. [!!] Or I’ll kill her.

velvet #44 part 4

Barbie is shocked but doesn’t directly respond to that. She adds her own troubles with Enrique. We must defend ourselves from sluts who want to steal our husbands. Barbie says she found lipstick on Enrique’s collar. She thought it was Clara at first, but she was wrong. Cris notes it’s possible because Clara is a slut who is willing to do anything to be with someone like Enrique. Barbie is sure that Clara is with Mateo and besides, she’s not Enrique’s type. He likes sophisticated women. [empty airheads like Barbie?] His lover is someone else. Someone close to him, and she was at Velvet yesterday. Will Cris piece it together?

Glo’s bags are packed. Val says, everything will be at your disposal in the Hamptons, except alcohol. I left strict instructions and the house has cameras. Glo tells Val she’s drunk with power. But don’t think you’re in charge. I’m leaving but not because of your threats. The empire you think you have will soon fall apart. Too bad I won’t be around to see your dreams fall.

Val says she’s used to seeing her dreams fall apart since she was little. Glo notes, I thought I was the iron lady. Look at me. You think you have control over everything? Val tells her mom she taught her how to defend herself. Glo warns, enjoy your last peaceful days. Pretty soon you’ll follow me because you are surrounded by traitors. The only thing you have in life is your mother. [with a mother like her, who needs enemies?] I’ve done everything for you. You have no one else. [we’ve heard this disgusting speech before.]

Blanca meets Esteban in a restaurant. He brings flowers. She tells him this is not a romantic date. He thinks differently. He was excited when she agreed to meet. She says she’s there to tell him about something that happened to her, and he needs to know. I had news about our son, she says. Esteban is stunned. What? He’s alive? Benjamin told me you terminated the pregnancy. No, Blanca replies, our son was born.

Esteban explains, I learned about your pregnancy after I arrived in London. I wanted to come back. I asked Benjamin to take care of everything because I couldn't. He told me you decided not to have the baby, and I felt you didn’t want to be with me. That’s why I didn’t come back.

Rodrigo comes to Velvet to see Ana. He congratulates her on her success and brings her a small gift. She asks him to catch up over lunch, but he has to get back to work. First, he has some troubling information about Carlos that he found out through a friend who works at Sahgun Global. Her friend had an affair with Carlos for a few months. It was on the downlow because Carlos was her boss. Ana asks, is that relationship continuing? No, Rod replies, but it was very strange. Katy Mendez is a Mexican girl, like you.

Ana asks Rod to cut to the chase. He says, Katy and Carlos dated for several months and what started as a good thing ended up being very difficult. Katy started to get isolated. My friend asked and Katy confessed that Carlos became obsessed with her. He didn’t let her have friends. She was at his mercy. Ana can’t believe this. Rod wants Ana to let him finish. He drops a bomb—Katy disappeared without a trace. Not even her friends and family know anything about her.

Ana responds, what you are implying is serious. Rod says he’s only telling her what his friend told him. This girl quit her job without a reason. She didn’t say goodbye to anyone. No one knows where she is. Maybe she left for personal reasons, Ana replies. Rod poses, what if Carlos had something to do with her missing? Ana says, if your friend is so worried, whey doesn’t she ask Carlos about her?

velvet #44 part 5

Rod says his friend is afraid of Carlos. Carlos is not a good person. I’m worried something could happen to you. Ana asks if there is any evidence. Has anyone reported the girl missing? Is there evidence that Carlos mistreated her? Rod has no evidence, but he has a picture of Katy. She looks like you…

Ana doesn’t want to see the pic and she doesn't want to listen to any more of this. This is serious, she notes, and it’s even more serious that you’re trashing someone just because you can’t stand him. It’s a shame. Carlos is not the person you say he is and you’re not the person I thought you were, either. Ana returns his gift and leaves.

Blanca explains her side. I had to work, and I couldn’t take care of a small child. I should have supported you, Esteban admits, I wish you had looked for me. I was going to, Blanca replies, but I found out you got married. Esteban answers, you don’t know how much I regret my mistakes. I know it’s too late… or maybe not… What’s his name? I’d like to meet him.

Blanca continues, I didn’t feel capable of raising him alone. I left him in foster care. When I tried to get him back, he was already adopted. Esteban asks, wasn’t there a way to find him? Blanca says she tried but it was impossible. She never heard from him again. She sadly adds, very recently, I found out that he died. Our son died believing I abandoned him. I couldn’t tell him I loved him and that I thought of him every single day of my life. That’s what I wanted to tell you, because he was your son, too. With this, what we had is over.

Esteban begs, please don’t leave me like this. We can give ourselves another chance. Blanca replies, my feelings for you were buried in pain and deception a long time ago. Goodbye, Esteban. She leaves.

Mateo’s mom has accepted the situation and comes to the office with lovely baby items. Only the best for her grandson. Clara tries to tell her, but Emma talks over her… my sisters and I don’t care about the baby’s origin. It has our blood. We will take care of the expenses, from his birth until he’s grown. We want him to grow up without traumas and shortcomings.

Mateo walks in. Emma continues, we found a small studio close to our house. That way you can live close to us and Mateo [!!] My big boy will still live with us in my house. Mateo greets his mother and gives her the news—there’s no baby. Clara isn’t pregnant.

Emma is thrilled and she likens it to winning the lottery and the prize is her son. She hugs her prize. Clara says she tried to tell her and to add to her happiness, she broke up with her son. Emma exclaims, ¡Válgame El Señor! This is one of the happiest days of my life! This nightmare is over!

A customer talks to Rick about a dress for a gala—a music award ceremony. I’ll be with my husband on the red carpet. Her husband happens to be Randy Brave. Rick is starstruck. I have no idea who this is or if he is really an artist. I couldn’t find anything under that name.

Esteban meets Albert. Albert asks, are you coming back to NY? Yes, Esteban replies, with your cousin Sofia. Albert says he never met her. Esteban says he will remedy that. He doesn’t want to be away from the only family he has left. And he doesn't want that for Sofia. It’s time to make up for lost time. Albert asks, so you’re meeting with Tia Pilar, too?

Esteban fibs and says, no, it’s not a good idea. I’ve never agreed with her ways of doing business. She puts money above all else. You and I are not that different, Esteban says. I’d like you to give me a chance to prove it to you. Tell me, Albert asks, what can I do for you? Just let me be close to you again, Esteban replies.

Cris meets Sara in a restaurant. Sara says, I guess you already know why I asked you to come. Cris wastes no time and answers, because you are a cynical and shameless person. Why else?

And we are out.

Velvet

Wow dondi, I can always count on you to capture everything. I'm sorry you were inflicted with the Susan/Pedro scene. I had the same thought , she's drugging her kid, what an awful mother.

My favorite scene was with Mateo's mother, actually. She is an awful snob, but the humor of the scene was a nice break.

Carlos is definitely a bad guy. I've known he has an agenda, but I actually thought for a second that Ana should leave velvet and develop her own line elsewhere. But obviously not with Carlos now we see how bad he really is. I still dislike Al and like Rod. In a just world Rod would get the girl in the end but I doubt this will be the final outcome.

So Esteban wants to renew his relationship with Al. By my calculations at best Al was a toddler when Esteban went to London. Max looks to be in his early 20's and Blanca's son was a similar age. Al is supposed to be about 25(a real stretch of the imagination). Apparently Esteban has a daughter, Sophia, who has never met her cousin so I doubt Esteban has been back to NY over the years.. I wonder what game he and Pilar are cooking up between them.

I'm still having audio problems. If this continues I may ask someone to take over my Wed recap. If I wait until the next day when I have the on demand availability, the captions lag behind a lot and it cuts out a good third of the dialogue. I'm not fluent enough yet to catch everything without the captions. I did notice today I got most of the captions with the correct timing on the DVR version, but no sound for dialogue. I switched between the two playback options on a few scenes to clear things up for me. Also, I'm really enjoying Bahar and may start recapping it more thoroughly.

Bahar #5

I wish this was on at 8! 10 p.m. recaps are too hard on me if I try to get everything. So, instead I'll post the highlights the next day as I recall them.

Bahar and her friend, Cagla, are taking that vacation Timur suggested. Walking through the airport Bahar gets a call. The hospital wants her to come in for an interview after all. Bahar is ecstatic, back home she goes.

In the interview there are several Drs. on the panel Her health is discussed. Also they ask about her personal life. She is a recent widow ( ha, ha. Timur better watch his back). Her children are raised and she wants to finish her training now. The votes are taken, with Timur a no, Evren yes, chief, yes, another no...deciding vote goes to Rengin. She votes yes! Actually this is one way she can force the divorce issue I'm thinking.

So now Bahar is in, but Evren pretends to not know her, Uras also has to pretend he doesn't know her, nor Evren. (Some comedic elements creep in to this show. I approve.)

The other big reveal is as I suspected. When Timur brought 20 year old pregnant Bahar home to mom and Dad's, it is the house they currently live in. I think Bahar continued her studies with an infant, but when Father in law became ill she quit and cared for him. He left the house and investments to her, but suegra and Timur have kept this from her. Timur and she are afraid to lose their current cushy lifestyle. I'm thinking if he is a renowned surgeon he should be doing ok financially.

So those were the main plots of this episode. I really should type as I watch it, I'm sure I missed a lot.

Wow, dondi, thanks so much for yet another stupendous recap, filled with insights and great asides!

I was interested to see that this time, the episode does not start with a simple repetition. The previous episode ended with Cris realizing that the person Alberto loves is very likely Ana. She's alone when she realizes this. But last night's episode begins with her confronting Alberto with her suspicion about Ana. I like this sort of arrangement better than just a replay of the previous episode.

I'm not sure what to make of Esteban's explanation to Blanca of why he didn't return to be with her. He blames it all on Benjamin, which may be true, or just a convenient lie.

I enjoyed the scene with Mateo's mother in ecstasy when she learns first that Clara isn't pregnant and then--best of all as far as the mother is concerned--Clara's statement that she and Mateo have broken up. I gotta say, I'd think twice and then twice more before marrying someone who is close to a mother like that. Heck, apparently she wasn't even going to let Clara live in the family house. Mateo, yes, but not Clara.

The part of last night's episode that most surprised me was the revelation that Carlos is clearly weird, wacko, or worse. I could barely watch him interacting with the woman he has hired (I assume he's paying her) to pretend to be Ana. The scene also suggests that he may be more out of control and hence more dangerous than he'd seemed before. Yuck! Rodrigo tries to warn Ana, but all he gets for his concern is her anger at what she regards as his badmouthing Carlos. I wonder what it will take for Ana to see Carlos for the sick weirdo he is.

Velvet

Very thorough recap, Dondi! I found this episode disturbing. Perhaps we have a serial killer, if the girl Rod mentioned was murdered. Carlos certainly became menacing here. Ana should be listening to Rod!

I think we all agree the Susan Pedro tale is annoying at least, if not disturbing. Drugging Peter is disturbing.

I think I must be frustrated with all this! I like Mateo and Clara, but I’m sick of the story line. (I did enjoy the humor in the scene with his mother, though!). I am really tired of Alberto and don’t want him to get Ana. I no longer like Cris! I want Alberto to know his mother now! And Sara & Spouse, yuck. But here’s the thing: I am disliking Enrique less! I must be losing my mind!

Velvet
Babachita, I had to laugh at your Enrique comment! I like him more than Al. I guess his cheating on Barbie doesn't bother us too much as she is pretty unlikeable herself. Rick is a good guy too. How many episodes till this is over?

Velvet

Kat, I don’t know how many episodes of Velvet are left. Usually, the newer telenovelas are 70-80 or so. It’s nice to know if we are getting close. New and returning characters are piling up, so might be some plot twists coming.

Bahar

Nice recap, Kat! It is fun to watch Bahar’s expressions as her new life unfolds! I loved the scene where her mother fixes up her old lab coat, so she’s all set for her new life with a tie to the past.

Interesting that F-I-L left her everything! He must have known who he was married to! I wonder if he’ll turn out to be at fault over the old case, or if there’s more to it. This is a dizi, so of course there will be more to it!

Bahar

Great recap, Kat! Amazing that you did it from memory! I’m impressed.

I was surprised by Ringin’s vote, and by her gracious smile when she cast it. I’m also surprised that Timur has worked in that hospital for a number of years and nobody knows who his wife is. Or who his son is! Couldn’t they get in trouble for hiring relatives? Usually when you get hired you have to give a phone number for them to call in case of emergency. Would she be giving her mother’s number? Might they not notice that her home address is the same as Timur’s?

Isn’t her mother nice? Now that we’re getting a bigger picture we can tell that she’s been disrespected in her home all these years. Well, the kids seem to respect her. But what a suegra! We find out that at least the dad loved her, so much indeed that he left her the house and the money. Now he’s gone thank goodness she has such a sweet mom. Also, a loving girlfriend.

OT - Turkish

Dondi – I looked up Turkish to see what languages it’s related to. The answer was not many! Does it take long to get used to the word order? I have a Hungarian friend and he’s taught me a little – Hungarian is also agglutinative. I see they once thought the two languages were related for that reason, but then they decided no.

The thing about Hungarian is that though I don’t know it, when I hear it I think “I could learn that!” here where I live in LA we have a huge Asian population and when I hear their tonal languages I think “How on earth could a person learn that?”

The only Turkish I’ve heard so far is in the songs since everything’s dubbed, but it does sound learnable!

OT/TELEMUNDO:
Maggie & Dondi356: I am waiting for the debut of "DINISTAS CASILLAS".

Bahar

Babachita, I also wonder about FIL. I wonder if he covered for his son in a botched procedure. Evren 'lamentably' knowing him makes me wonder if he trained under him, or if it was a relative of his (wife/sister) that died due to his possible mistake. I have a hard time finding fault with Drs. There are some things they will just miss, they don't have Crystal ball, may not have all the facts, may be exhausted from overwork, the list is long of things that can go wrong. That is when faith comes in and a hope that there is an afterlife. We never know when our time on earth is done.

I'm not sure it was her old lab coat, we saw Bahar trying the old one on in her dressing room. I'm not sure she packed it up when she went to her mom's. The fact she needed a nap in the middle of the day does give credence to the Drs concerns that residency training might be too much for her. I get the impression med school starts earlier in Turkey. Uras is 20 and he's already a resident. Or else they are playing fast and loose with the timeline. In the first episode I thought it started 25 years ago. Perhaps the captioners are translating wrong.

Maggie, I'm pretty sure father and son are known to be related. I know the girl resident, Serem, knows . I think she is a year ahead of Uras as she reamed him out over letting a patient self discharge. Since I have the option of getting English captions on this, I'm doing so, as early on I really want to get what they show correct.

Kat, you’re probably right that it wasn’t the original lab coat. This one looked very fresh. Interesting speculation that Dad might have covered for Timur. The plot thickens!

Thanks so much, dondi, for your piece of Friday excellence once again.

Cris is an unstable, loose cannon. Asking that Alberto break the contract for Saghattan is just nuts. I think she does realize it was probably one time, but her insecurity won't allow even a business relationship with Sara.

Ana, always so sweet and accommodating, actually put up her hands to ward off Carlos insisting she leave Velvet. But later on, she gets upset with Rodrigo when he, as I implored him to do, told her some unsavory things about Carlos.

I'm also unclear about the Hamptons alcohol free arrangement. I just read about some business in the NY Times that specializes in sort of a delivery scheme to get things from the rich people's NYC homes to their vacation homes in the Hamptons. One example cost $500. I sort of thought it was a Márquez vacation home and Valeria would somehow be able to restrict alcohol.

As far as Ana and Carlos are concerned, she's pretty inexperienced. People who've been around the block a few times know that, if you date someone for quite a while and don't fall in love, it's probably never going to happen.

I really, really hate the premise of Isabel having a terminal illness. Itatí Cantoral is doing a great job in the role.

Only a narcissist would tell their child they have no one but that parent.

Are we ever going to see Mateo cut his own umbilical cord?

bahar

I finally caught up but will be in Oregon next week.

Kat, are you psychic? I seem to remember your hinting that Bahar may have had some sort of inheritance from Aziz, her FIL, that Timur and the really evil Nevra were keeping from her. Turns out she owns everything. I seem to remember, during Bahar's tongue lashing, that she said that Nevra wanted to put her ailing husband in some sort of facility. And that's why Bahar left her career to care for the man she thought of as her father. It was also intimated that her own father was horrible to her about the pregnancy.

This is the first time I've seen Bugra Gülsoy as a straight up galán. He's either started out sketchy and improved or stayed sketchy the whole way through.

velvet

Thanks for commenting, everyone. This is heating up.

IIRC, Gloria knows about Val and Enrique. Will she use that info?

Carlos has sunk to K’s Drop Dead list. I can’t see redemption for him now, especially if he’s a killer.

If Peter is really Pedro’s son, maybe he should try to get custody. Susan is an unfit mother.

“By my calculations at best Al…” Kat, we need beanies for that kind of calculation. Timelines are fluid in novelas. “I wonder what game he and Pilar are cooking up between them.” This should be an interesting alliance. Maybe Sofia will play a part as well.

“I'm not sure what to make of Esteban's explanation to Blanca…” I’m not sure either, Juanita, but anything is possible. I think Benjamin wasn’t as wonderful as everyone wants to believe. He believed the lies against Isabel and lied to Albert about her. Wouldn’t a real galan fight for his true love?

I really like Mateo’s mom and aunties. Probably because I don’t care much for Mateo and/or Clara.

“But here’s the thing: I am disliking Enrique less!” I guess if you compare him to people like Carlos and Gloria, Babachita. ITA, Kat, it helps that Barbie is unlikeable.

“I'm also unclear about the Hamptons alcohol free arrangement… I sort of thought it was a Márquez vacation home and Valeria would somehow be able to restrict alcohol.” novelera, I think Gloria is too cunning for this to work well. She needs more than an alcohol-free vacation stay. She needs professional treatment. I read that Times article, too, and laughed. I don’t know how they get deliveries there “pronto”. Hamptons traffic is notoriously awful, especially on summer weekends. But if someone wanted to pay me $500 for delivering croissants, I’d consider it.

OT - Turkish

Maggie, I think Hungarian is more complex than Turkish. They are similar in that both are agglutinative and use vowel harmony. There are a lot of Turkish loan words in Hungarian because of the Ottoman conquest. I guess that's why it was thought they were related.

Neyse, the more you study and practice the easier it gets.

OT

I'm a big fan of Latino USA and it's long-time creator, Maria Hinojosa. The July 20 episode of this podcast has an interesting title: "What our Favorite Telenovela Villains Tell us about Human Evolution". Maria made some kind of a deal recently for better funding. This results in more commercials than before. But the episode about telenovelas is interesting.
