Cuando Me Enamoro #168 Thursday 12/15/11 Never let a fox guard the hen house or a serpent guard the aviary
Over at the Den de Desamor, the young cub searches dad's office, but all the drawers and cupboards are locked.
In the La B cocina, Alison pumps Manuela for background on the characters in this tale. Manuela says apparently Doc Marina is a decent sort, she helped Manuela when she was sick, but she’s not happy that Jero ran off with her. She has no comment on Saul having never met him. They say he’s a doctor in the capital. (Did we know that? Makes sense I guess.) As for Don Augustin, she can’t say whether he’s good or bad, but he is very haughty (alzado, an interesting word that often means elevated or raised) and looks down his nose (por encima del hombro) at all of them. Manuela finally asks Ali why the sudden interest? Ali says she just wants to understand the people around her. Manuela gives Ali some advice: around here you look, listen, and keep your mouth shut. (Ve, oye, y calla).
Herminia runs in wriggling in excitement with her hot chisme. Ali cracks up and Manuela rolls her eyes, how many times has she told Hermi she hates gossip? But Hermi’s already spilling it, Don Augustin is driving Regina and Renata to Ensenada. Ali thought bubbles Hermi is the one who can reliably spill the soup.
Back the fox’s den the cub continues his search. He spies the laptop, boots it up, and appears frustrated as he pounds the keys.
Next up we see the giant letters in the bay of Ensenada announcing it is the Ruta del Vino and all I can say is I sure wish those monoliths had been there the one time I sailed into Ensenada because for the 3-4 months my boat was down there I was clueless that I was in the Wine Country. Oh well, cold beers went fine with fish tacos and I will just have to visit that now infamous wine country another time.
The doc is printing out the results of Renata’s ECG while Nata jokes about dying and Regina pats her arm in a motherly fashion.
Augustin, in white windbreaker of course, strolls and thought bubbles that without Jero in Nata’s life it will be easier to win her over again. It will take a while for her to forget Jero but Augi can be very very patient. (Since when?!?) He plans to become indispensable in her life but what are they going to do with Jeronimo’s cub? His icy glare does not bode well for the tiny creature’s future.
In the consultation the doc tells Renata she has a heart condition. He says it’s not serious but Nata needs to be vigilant during her pregnancy. Regina’s eyes grow wide as the jigsaw pieces of her brain start falling into place. “Has she had this condition since birth?” queries Regina. Doc says most likely, especially when he hears Nata’s sister also has a heart condition. In Nata’s case it just didn’t manifest itself until now. We can see by Regina’s face that more pieces are fitting together and she no doubt wonders if this lovely heart-achy chick could possibly be her own. Renata asks if she can fly to Mexico City and the doc says he will give her a prescription to minimize the altitude affect on her heart and pregnancy.
Puppy sighting! Back at La B Adri and Matias are playing Name That Dog. Matias suggests Fido (Feedo) which is the quintessential perro name. Adri corrects him and displays the chubby puppy underbelly. Silly Matias, it is a perra not a perro and both Adri and perra glare at him with big brown eyes, dumb boy. Adri snuggles the pup and tells Matias that Julietta called with some prime chisme. Apparently she saw Berta and German in her building and Robertita is the amante of none other than German Ibarrola! Matias grimly says dad’s not going to be happy to hear his kid is hanging with a married man and Adri says Regi’s not going to like it either. Matias reveals that Gonzo told him there was a fire at Fina’s psych ward but no word yet about Fina. Matias cautions Adri not a word of this news to Renata.
Our question regarding Fina’s hideout is answered as Berta lets them into her Germy lust nest. Berta coldly advises that she’ll give Fina some money to skip to Europe but this is the last thing she intends to do for mommy dearest and ma can’t stay there forever, is that clear? Fina cases the joint, feigning humility while she lets Berta blather. And one more thing, says Berta, she doesn’t want mom to insert herself in Berta’s life. She snips that Fina can go ahead and tell Regina that Berta’s not her own daughter if she wants and she, Berta, is no longer afraid of being alone because thank God she has someone. Fina supposes it’s the same so-and-so (fulano) that subsidised the apartment for them to wallow (revolcarse) in, no? And this same guy will protect Berta from everything, eh? Fina sneers and cackles give her a break, she’s not stupid. If Berta thinks this guy will give up everything for Berta then little B is sadly mistaken. Fina advises Berta to enjoy herself now because sooner or later Berta is going to ask Fina for help. Those purple eyelids flutter in consternation.
Gonzo and Honorio are at the morgue and the locas are lined up horizontally, now clad in black body bags. The doctor tells G and H that the bodies are completely burned (calcinados) and they need authorization from the families before they can check records. Gonzo tells him he’s going to call and get Fina’s dental records sent over straight away.
Aw geez, is Isidro going to be delayed AGAIN from analyzing the prints? He sits across the desk from his bank guy drinking tea and taking a pill for his temperature. He’s also hoarse so I think he really is sick. Isidro asks the guy for a favor, something confidential to be kept just between the two of them. He hands over the fingerprints from baby Regina Soberon and adult Renata and asks the guy to run an analysis. The guy supposes it’s for a good cause and he’ll check to see if they are a match. He’ll be able to let Isidro know in a couple of days to confirm Isisdro’s suspicions. Isisdro wants the satisfaction of telling Regina who her daughter really is. OK so this is just between these two and Isidro is sick? Something tells me he’s going to be dead or out of commission when the results come in. GAH!!! They shake hands and Isidro smiles the grin of the doomed but hopefully I’m wrong about that.
Fina is enjoying her freedom and chugging a glass of good wine while Berta stalks around the apartment in her angry spike heels. Fina demands money and tells Berta she needs new clothes and accesories. Berta hands over some cash and sasses that she’s not mom’s servant. Fina lashes out that she’s the mother and Berta had better get her some new duds NOW.
After Berta grudgingly departs for the clothing store Fina recalls starting the fire, slipping the paper into Blanca’s pocket, giving Blanca her flying lesson and holding up the key to Blanca’s hidden wealth. Fina smiles and proposes a toast to herself for her genius (genialidad) in getting rid of all the obstacles in her way and getting the money she needs. All she has to do now is change her look and get her “inheritance” from little Blanca. She raises her glass to heaven and starts to toast Blanca, changes her mind, lowers her glass down and toasts to Blanca in hell.
Back in Ensenada sly Augustin feigns concern that Renata’s baby is fine as he gets a bit more info about her ailment. Yes it’s the same condition that Doc NastyN discovered. Roberta also has the condition so it runs in the family (mal de familia). Regina says thankfully it’s not very serious so they can leave tomorrow for the DF. Augi suggests Renata should stay and recuperate some more but Nata wants to leave right away. Augi tells Nata just because she’s going to the DF doesn’t mean she won’t see him anymore. She confirms that she doesn’t want to lose his friendship. “Friendship!” he thought-bubbles, “I want MUCH MORE than your friendship Renata.”
Regina calls Gonzo and he tells her about the psych ward fire and that Fina is likely dead. Regina breaths a sigh of relief, not remembering that the sneaky gata has nine lives.
Over at Empresas Monterrubio (EM) the nasty serpent stalks the soft gray dove that he hopes to gobble up. Germy approaches receptionist Beth and she squirms in discomfort under his hungry gaze. He tells her to call him German and she responds how can she help him SEÑOR IBARROLA? She tells him Roberta just called and she’ll be delayed getting to the office. Perfect, he says, knowing that wife-type #2 won’t be around to monitor him. He suggests taking Beth out to eat but she says she doesn’t go out with her bosses and her BOYFRIEND wouldn’t like it. The serpent hisses it’s a good idea to get to know her BOSSES better as it has many benefits, and she knows the kind of work he means. He licks his lips and leers at the prospect of lunch.
Roberta gets back to the lust nest cum hideout with bags of clothing and lunch. Fina tells Berta she wants Berta to be her eyes and ears at Gonzo’s house to see what they find out about her disappearance or incineration (calcinacion, which also means calcination and this might be a clue as to Fina’s demise). Berta agrees but she wants Fina to think about when she’s going to leave and with what, because she wants Fina outta there in a couple of days and has already given her all the money she has. Fina corrects her, Berta had better invent a story for her new boyfriend because it will take a couple of weeks before Berta gets her inheritance and they can escape together. Berta asks who says she’ll leave with Fina? “Your hate,” answers mom, “your hate for Regina and all the Monterrubios which is as great as mine.” Berta retorts that she hates Fina more than she hates them. Fina tut tuts and says Berta needs to get over it because Berta will do what is best for the two of them.
Sweet Beth goes to Gonzo’s office to discuss a delicate matter with him. She starts to say that the other day she agreed to go out to eat with him but...she is interrupted. The serpent has stalked his prey into this sanctuary and spins it so that he just wanted to go out with Beth to assist with some company training (capacitacion) and personal improvement, is Gonzo cool with that? Gonzo says he fully supports training, right Beth? And with that the sad dove leaves the office in defeat.
Germy sits down and Gonzo says he realizes Germy joined the company at a time of great family conflict but Germy’s done a great job with business negotiations. Germy says he has even better news, he just closed the Edgardo Gorrena deal and he would like Roberta to go with him to the guy’s country house to work out the details of the contract. Gonzo hesitates at the idea of his purple cuckoo flying away with this guy, but Gonzo can’t see the predator in the man and finally relents. Germy is a master of making what is nasty sound innocent.
Ines and Isidro wring their hands as they discuss proving Renata is Regina’s daughter and the thought of Fina, who may or may not be Nata’s mom, burning up in the fire. Ines prays that Renata knows whether or not Pepa is her real mother when she finds out if Pepa lived or died in the fire. But then she says there is one more possibility, maybe Pepa escaped.
Hons welcomes Coni’s lawyer to his office. The lawyer says thanks to the picture and testimony of the woman from the center they are watching Corinna’s house and any moment now should be able to capture her.
Coni’s still in jail wailing for help from the Virgencita. With all the proof they have against Corinna can’t they let Coni out? I guess they have to have someone in jail and until they get Corinna Coni gets to keep her spot warm. She’s praying to the Virgen de Guadalupe to get her out of jail soon, she only wanted to help the little baby.
Back at LaB Matias and Adri discuss Germy while the puppy energetically nibbles Adri’s fingers with tiny, sharp teeth. Matias says Gonzo is convinced Germy is a good man and even a friend, but a good friend wouldn’t be having it on with one’s daughter. Germy is an entrepeneur and great businessman, but if he doesn’t respect the Monterrubios then he has no place at EM. Adri points out the problem is so far they only have Julietta’s word for it. At this dead end they weary of family business and let the puppy scamper on the floor while they smooch and express their undying love.
As Augustin’s truck hurtles inland its occupants are occupied with their own thoughts. Regina thinks that she never wanted Fina dead but she must admit that part of her is glad to be able to finally relax. But poor Renata, although her relationship with Fina was fractured, Fina was her mother. She prays to God to help them find the words to give Renata the news in the best way possible. Renata thinks about Jero and asks him how can he be so cruel to her yet again? Why? Why does he keep yanking away her ability to enjoy life? Augi drives and thinks that he will use Renata’s fragility, hate for Jero and her courage in his favor. He’s got to stop her from going to Mexico City and find a way to get her to open her heart to him again. And he thinks he might know just what to do!
Padre Severino tells Antonio that he’s looked everywhere for Marina and he can’t find her. Tony says maybe she and Jero want it that way, at least for now. Come on you two dopes, you look like Spy vs Spy and you are even stupider! Don’t you think it’s weird that nobody can find either Marina or Jero? They are missing! Aaarrrghhh!! At last Toni says something smart. He tells Padre S that even if he heard something in the confidence of confession, if there is any doubt that Jero and Marina have not disappeared voluntarily then Padre S should investigate and get to the bottom of the situation for everyone’s good. Ya think?
Back at La B Manuela and Kari wonder how this will all turn out. Will Jero return and if he does will Doc TwinsForTatas be with him? Manuela’s vote is that he returns alone and with a convincing (contundente) reason so Renata will forgive him. They both have a hard time figuring out what that reason could be. Renata’s heart is broken in a thousand pieces, will it ever be put back together as it once was? Manuela uses Kari and Laz as an example, they finally got together after all those obstacles.
The phone rings and Manuela answers then goes white. She walks toward Kari and says it’s Dr. UnendingObstacle and he wants to talk to Kari! Kari reluctantly takes the phone and is afraid he somehow escaped from jail. No, he says, he’s still in the Tijuana jail. It’s his birthday and the only present he wanted to give himself is the sound of her voice. Creep!! Manuela and Kari listen as Dr. WhyWasIBornTodayOrAnyDay whimpers that of all the mistakes he made, with her he made the worst. The guard says “Time’s up” but NastyN keeps whining “I’ve done you so much damage and I loved you with an egotistical love, but I loved you, I loved you!” Well that’s one helluva birthday present jerkoff, call your ex and terrorize her some more. From all the ladies may I say we hope our next birthday is in HELL!
The guard hangs up for NastyN, Kari is dumbstruck, and Manuela just shakes her head, “Too little too late,” (muy tarde llegó su arrepentimiento). Kari says it hurt her to hear him and we are cursed with watching his thin-lipped maw gape in anguish as he blubbers her name over and over.
Speaking of anguish, MiClumsy is over at the chem lab dropping chemicals and pitching a fit because he’s sick of not being able to use his hands, oh boo hoo. Prissbutt uses this as an excuse, not that she ever needs one, to smarmily sooth his childish ego and fondle his hands. She is there to help out. He says he’s stressed out because he wants Jero to get back and have things return to normal. Prissy sits deeply within his space and faces him, making sure to touch his legs. She reminds him that he told her he was conflicted with his feelings about her and Mati and she caresses his face, pressing her case. Just as he is looking confused Super Laz saves the day by coming in and calling “Hey Brother-In-Law, Renata just returned.” Laz stares at Prissy and waits for Carlos to leave the lab before he departs. Priss the predator smiles smugly to herself. Is it because she thinks she’s making headway or has she identified Laz as an impediment?
Renata and Regina have their backs to us as they gaze at the vineyards from the La B porch. From this angle it’s almost impossible to tell them apart. Carlos and Laz join them and Renata tells them the appointment went well and she can leave any time. Carlos and Laz hang their heads but understand. Carlos assures her he’ll let her know what happens at La B. Renata says don’t bother, she has no interest in any more info about Jero or La Bonita; once she leaves it’s over.
Augustin has his arms crossed in satisfaction as Renata asks Carlos and Laz to respect her wish to keep her pregnancy a secret from Jero. Jero chose to be with Marina and her children so Renata’s baby is all hers. Well? Can she count on them to respect her wish? Carlos reluctantly agrees but Laz hesitates and says he does not, since she first arrived everything at the hacienda has changed, but if this is what she wants she can count on them. (Alison has been listening to this last part and now she runs off, unseen.) Renata asks them to get everyone at the hacienda and gather them in the salon.
Anibal has been on dad’s laptop all this time and hopefully he’s done more than watch streaming video. Alison calls to give him the heads up that dad is back at the ranch. Ani says he’s found nothing, he can’t get into the laptop without the password. The kid must have been napping or daydreaming because he just now starts trying to figure out dad’s password. It’s not Renacer, what about Renata? Success! But of course dad’s back and will likely come striding in any moment.
The La B staff has gathered and Carlos tells them what he knows. He’s not sure exactly what Renata wants to say but she plans to leave and wants to ask them something before she goes. After lunch they’ll be ready to hear whatever Renata wants to say.
Carlos tells them he’s off to the vineyards until lunch. Kari prods Mati to follow him, doesn’t she have something to do outside?
Kari tells Laz about Doc Creepy’s birthday present to himself.
Outside on the picturesque patio Renata thanks Augustin for everything. He tells her although she’s leaving tomorrow he’d still like to be close to her, she means a lot to him. She says he means a lot to her too. He plans to give her all the time she needs and he wants to help her work things out. Renata clarifies for him that she really wants to be alone and dedicate herself to the baby.
Augustin says speaking of the baby, he wants to talk about what he’s been thinking about doing for it. Renata knows all too well the affect that not having a real father can have. He vows he can extend the deep love he feels for Renata to her baby. He proposes that the baby doesn’t need to have a phantom for a father, the baby can have a real daddy and they can form the real family that her child deserves. We conclude with Renata’s cara impactada as her brain tries to process his words.
So there you have it. A lot of talk, not a lot of action, and our biggest questions remain unanswered: Where is Jeronimo? Where is Marina? What did Fina put in Blanca’s pocket?
Avances: Renata wonders if she will be able to forget Jero. She kisses Augustin on the cheek but hugs Gitana with much more affection. She tells Adri that Augi proposes being her baby’s daddy. Mati pushes Prissy down. Fina cuts her hair. Beth walks in on Germy kissing Berta. New Look Fina sees something in the paper that makes her very happy. Gonzo hires a private detective to find Jeronimo. As Marina happily assembles a crib we see the backside of a mystery man. Is it Jero?

Maripaz laments her loneliness when she has only herself to blame. Too bad, so sad.

Hacienda Curiel: Lucia and Ivan talk about her feelings. She tells him she feels dirty.
David's Office: Esther and David talk about the association, then she tells him she will be filing for divorce.
Ag Ass Office: The other ranchers are pressuring JJ to pay back the money. He tries to say someone else did it but nobody is buying that; however it happened he is responsible. Cutberto – the guy whose crop was torched – says something about putting JJ in jail. We're talking about 40 million pesos ($2.9 million US).
David's Office: David gets a lawyer for his mother, who isn't turning back this time. She explains that Saul told JJ that he raped Lucia but that he told her that Lucia consented to sex. David asks if she believes that; she tells him that she doesn't know what to believe. And that Saul called her looking for money. He didn't tell her where he's hiding out but wants her to meet him in Hermosillo in front of the cathedral. [Of all the nerve] It's just this once. David is not pleased with this.
Ag Ass Office: JJ has a week to pay back the money.
Hacienda Curiel: ¡Por dios! Lucrazia still doesn't get it.
Lucrazia: I had hoped that Ivan would liven you up but from what I've seen he hasn't succeeded.
Lucia: Mama, don't ask me to 'liven up' after I've told you what happened. I want to denounce Saul.
Lucrazia: You don't know what you're saying, daughter. An accusation like this will be a scandal.
Lucia: I know, Mother, but –
Lucrazia: What will people say when they find out you were raped? Besides, nobody will believe you. They will think you provoked him. That's what always happens in these cases. Do you really think Saul will confess?
Lucia: The police will interrogate him and he will contradict himself.
Lucrazia: It's very difficult to prove a rape. I don't agree to let you to put the family in everyone's mouth. Por, favor, think about it. They have enough to talk about. When I was married to your father I was faithful. And ten years after the divorce I haven't been with anyone. Not that I didn't have the chance. I did it to keep our name pure for you. If you do what you're thinking of doing, where does that leave Perlita? A dirty origin, something shameful. Think about it, daughter, please. Think about it.
She kisses Lucia's forehead and exits. Santa Lucia looks like she's waffling again.
Camilo's Office: Antolin congratulates Camilo for forcing the issue of the money. Antolin and Camilo discuss how the one-week deadline could allow JJ to escape because of any money he might have out of the country and how Saul has dropped off the face of the earth. Since they can't risk JJ getting away Antolin plans to keep Casa Mondragon under surveillance.
Commercial Break that leads with a promo for La Que No Podia Amar.
Outside Casa Mondragon: Antolin explains this plan to Carolina over the phone. She's not happy about this. She warns him to be careful. Finally after ending the call she checks a pregnancy test, which is negative. Again. She worries that she won't be able to have children. [Por dios, why such a hurry? In your place I would enjoy all the amor caliente this guy's got.]
Hacienda Curiel: Carlota and Lucia talk about the conversation with Lucrazia.
Carlota: Your mother told me everything. You must feel terrible.
Lucia: I feel without courage. I also feel hate, indignation.
Carlota: Of course. It's understandable.
Lucia: Now I'm sad because none of this is fair. Not for me, or Ivan, or most of all for Perlita.
Carlota: Life isn't always fair, mi amor. What are you thinking to do? Denounce Saul and seek out his punishment?
Lucia: Ivan will help me whatever I decide. But how can I prove that Saul raped me?
Carlota: Confront him. Face to face and let him try to deny it.
Lucia: Saul is a cinico. I'll appear to be one, too. Besides, he's hiding.
Carlota: So look for him. There are tests that can show whether he's lying or not. Make him submit to one of those.
Lucia: Mother said something I agree with. What will happen to Perlita? Because things like this can't be hidden. Sooner or later she will know she was the product of a rape. That her father is a delinquent.
Carlota: That's true.
Lucia: I can teach her what's important in life, but when she goes to school and some little friend tells her the truth... it's difficult, especially in a town like this.
Casa McGuire: Tony and Ivan talk about this.
Tony: Had you thought about this?
Ivan: No, not really.
Tony: Do you love this baby girl?
Ivan: Of course I do. It doesn't matter who her sperm donor is; she's an innocent baby. She is Lucia's child and never will I make distinction between her, Alex, and any other child we will have together.
Tony: Therefore, why are you looking to judge?
Ivan: Because it isn't fair for Saul to get off without being punished for this crime.
Tony: What weighs more in the balance? Punishment for Saul or the happiness of this baby?
Ivan: Oh, no, no. You're talking like Carlota or Lucrezia. Hiding everything they want to.
Tony: Don't try to judge innocent people. I told you my wife cheated on me. I never told my son because of how it could have affected him.
Ivan: OK. You hid the dirty laundry of your house.
Tony: Well, yes. It's a good saying, and very wise. But if you and Lucia decide this, [????] Time will pass, her fears will go away, and she will be back with you as though nothing had happened.
Ivan (looks at his cell phone, which is ringing): It's David.
Tony: See what he wants.
Ivan (answering): Si, David; what's up?
David (driving): I called to tell you that I know what my brother did.
Ivan (holding back an outburst): There is no way that coward can pay for his filthy deeds. [porquerias]
David: I'm calling to tell you I won't be in the office this morning. I'm going after my brother to make him turn himself in.
Ivan: What are you saying? You know where he is?
David: It's all I can tell you for now. But don't worry; trust me. I'll call when I have more news. (ends the call)
Ivan: David? David?
Tony: What happened?
Ivan: David knows where Saul is. I'm sure he knows but I don't want him making decisions without consulting me. (makes a call)
Berenice's Apt: Her phone is ringing.
Berenice: Bueno?
Ivan: Hola, Berenice. It's Ivan.
Berenice: Oy, Ivan.
Ivan: I'm calling to find out if David told you where he was going this morning.
Berenice: [???] I tried calling once and it was busy and the second time he didn't answer. What's going on?
Ivan: It;s fair that I try to find out about matters between brothers [?]
Ivan is annoyed and probably should be.
Antolin sits in his car in front of Casa Mondragon. If he's going to be a private eye he really needs a care that's more discreet than a red convertible.
Casa Mondragon, study: JJ and Licenciado Gomez talk. They have bank records in hand that show that someone withdrew a substantial sum. He tells JJ that the only other person with signing power over that account is Esther. JJ reminds him that he shares the guilt in this mess with the ag ass and will have to pay. JJ isn't up to this and tells him they'll talk later. Gomez gets up and leaves. JJ yells for Esther. He asks about the withdrawals, including the one from today. She tells him she took out the money to pay for Saul's operation.
JJ is not pleased.
Berenice's Apt: She's worried about where he is. She calls but he doesn't answer as he heads toward Hermosillo.
Hacienda Curiel: Berenice and the Curiel women (menos the Merry Piece) sit around the dining room table.
Berenice: He didn't answer. I hoped he would tell me where he was going.
Lucia: He didn't say anything to me. It's been a while since I've talked to David.
Carlota: He called Ivan to tell him he wasn't going to let Saul get away without getting punished.
Berenice: Yes, yes. Something else happened this morning but I don't know what.
Lucrazia: Are you saying he's thinking of turning him over to the authorities?
Carlota: I don't doubt it. David was always more conciente than Saul.
Lucrazia: That's his own brother, Mama. How could he do that? And where does that leave us?
Carlota: This is about the man who raped your daughter, por dios! (Takes Lucia's hand)
Lucia: I'm not taking Saul's side; I'm thinking of us, especially the baby. Can you imagine your great-granddaughter knowing she is the product of a rape?
Berenice: But if you don't denounce Saul and he doesn't get the punishment he deserves he will go on with impunity. And that is not fair.
Lucrazia: I know it's not fair, you are absolutely right, but Saul will say anything. Like Lucia surrendered herself to him. And who was there to prove it wasn't so? You?
Berenice: Lucia is incapable of that
Lucrazia: We know that because we know her. Do you think the judge and the others will think the same?
Berenice: But she was drugged.
Lucrazia: And do you think that after more than a year we can prove she had been drugged?
Lucia: Mama, por favor!
Casa McGuire, Office:
Zavaleta: I understand your indignation, Ivan, but much time has passed. Although we can get a DNA test to prove the baby is the child of Saul Mondragon there is nothing to prove whether the act was consensual or not. It will be his word against hers.
Ivan: And therefore, this infeliz will get away with it.
Zavaleta: Not if he confesses, but I doubt he will. I know you won't like what I'm going to say, but as your lawyer I have to tell you how it will play. The daughters of Señora Curiel don't have good reputations. The older … we know her character and personality. You had a child, got married, then got divorced.
Ivan: Where are you going with this?
Zavaleta: Señora Lucia married Señor Galvan, and divorced him when you came back.
Tony:
Ivan: Ya, Licenciado, ya.
Zavaleta: Permit me. You renewed your relationship and everyone knows. Her baby is the child of Saul Mondragon whether by rape or not.
Tony: Son, listen. The lawyer is right. I know you're angry but it's better not to let it out. [moverle]
Ivan: No, this can't be.
Casa Mondragon: JJ and Esther argue about the money she took out of the bank. JJ accuses her of having tantrums and she tells him off. Big. She is leaving him. He calls her crazy and she says she was only crazy when she thought he could change. More insulting crap from him. She knows he feels nothing for her. She finally tells him she's leaving in the morning and exits. Like a typical spoiled brat he shoves all the papers off the table.
Commercial Break that leads with a promo for ¡Feliz 2012!.
Dr Fuentes' Office, the next day: Carlota and Lucrazia get the news that Lucrazia is headed for kidney failure. She asks whether she could die and he tells her not to think of that, but of the solution. Carlota takes her daughter's hand.
Hermosillo: Saul waits impatiently for Esther, but it's David who arrives.
Dr Fuentes' Office: The good doctor explains that Lucrazia will need dialysis three times a week and she may need a transplant. He gets up to check whether they can give her her first appointment the day after tomorrow. Lucrazia is good and scared.
Hermosillo:
David: No, Saul, mother didn't tell me to set a trap for you.
Saul: Therefore, what the devil are you doing here? Who told you?
David: She told me, but I'm here to see you.
Saul: Why? To betray me? Surely you called the police to arrest me.
David: No, Saul. You're my brother and for all you've done I'm here to give you the chance to give yourself up (entreges). It's your only chance, Saul.
Saul: You are still (nuts?) That's what it looks like.
David: It's for your own good, Saul [Something about his sins was blipped out] Act like a man.
Saul: You're not enough to be my brother.
David: Then what? Are you thinking about hiding for the rest of your life? What about your conscience?
Saul: Conscience? Don't you know me? Get out of here! Leave me alone!
David: You leave me no choice but to take you to the police. (grabs his arm. Esther enters)
Saul (getting free): Look. (both look at Esther)
Esther: David, why are you here?
Saul steals his mother's handbag, runs, and jumps into a cab. It pulls away just as David reaches the door. David makes a gesture of frustration.
Outside Casa Mondragon: Camilo calls Antolin, who reports that Esther left the house with a suitcase early that morning. He makes a comment on how little by little JJ is more alone and how Esther must have realized what kind of a rat she lived with all those years.
Casa Mondragon: The maid informs JJ that his wife left with a suitcase. David isn't in and Judith left for work early. He comments about he will enjoy the peace and quiet of the house now that he's finally alone. He sips his coffee, nearly spits it out, and calls the maid to bring him tequila. She tells him there isn't any; la Señora got rid of it. JJ looks frustrated.
Casa McGuire, office area: Lucia tells Ivan she decided not to denounce Saul. She explains about Perlita and he doesn't argue with her. He will give Perlita his name and she will never have to be ashamed. Lucia is still angry that Saul will get away with this, but Ivan tells her that sooner or later he will pay for his sins.
Hermosillo: Esther tells David she had brought money for Saul (Ay, dios mio!) and now they don't expect to see him again (Yeah, right.). David offers to take her back to his place, but the cab is waiting for her to go to a hotel.
How is she going to pay without the purse Saul just stole? Enquiring minds want to know.
Commercial Break
Casa McGuire: Ivan gets a call from David about Saul's escape. He explains that Lucia wasn't going to press charges, so let's leave it at this. We see the anvil being hoisted. Lucia gets the call from Carlota that Lucrazia is sick and she's to come home immediately. She and Ivan exit.
Hacienda Curiel: Lucrazia is living up to our nick, but Carlota may be following her.
Lucrazia screams and breaks things.
Carlota: Daughter, what's wrong?
Lucrazia: Leave me alone! I need to [???]
Carlota: Not like this.
Lucrazia: Then how? Don't you see that I'm desperate? Do you know that this signifies I'm on the brink of death? That I'll have to submit myself to a horrible treatment for the rest of my life?
Carlota: Por favor, Lucrezia; many people live that way.
Lucrazia: Not living; surviving. I'd rather die. [???]
Carlota: Enough, Lucrezia. It's true. I'm sorry this happened, but you have to stop feeling sorry for yourself.
Lucrazia: You don't understand.
Carlota: Of course I understand; you are flesh of my flesh. What happens to you affects me very much.
Lucrazia (crying): Thanks, Mother, but in this moment I feel so alone.
Carlota: You aren't alone. I'm with you. And you have your daughters. Who might donate a kidney. I can't because I'm old But your daughters are young and healthy. You don't have to worry.
Lucrazia: Perhaps at times I've been unfair to Lucia. [Dios mio, is that ever an understatement] How could I face her to ask for a kidney?
Carlota: Por dios, Lucia isn't resentful. [rencorosa] [Something about the thousand loves in her heart and lack of rancor]
Lucrazia: Maybe, but if we're not compatible...
Carlota: There is Maripaz.
Lucrazia: Por favor, Mama! Do you really think Maripaz would do that for me? I don't know about that.
Of course that was sarcastic, but we spot another anvil. Lucia gets home.
Carlota: Thank God you're home.
Lucia: How is mother? What happened?
Carlota: It's very serious. Her kidneys aren't working well. She is in danger of dying if she doesn't get the necessary treatment.
Lucia: You know what treatment she needs?
Carlota: Yes, but she doesn't want to go. She'd rather die than submit to dialysis. I don't know how to reason with her. Help me!
Lucia: Yes, I will. (goes into Lucrazia's bedroom)
Lucia: Mama, it's me.
Lucrazia: What do you want?
Lucia: Only to see you, to see how you are.
Lucrazia: Didn't your grandmother tell you I'm dying?
Lucia: Por favor, you're not dying. (takes her hand) The treatment can help you live for many years.
Lucrazia: Does it look good to live connected to a blood filter?
Lucia: Don't think that way Look at it as [???]
Lucrazia: I don't know how to be that optimistic.
Lucia: Grandma says you won't go for the dialysis.
Lucrazia: Why? I don't want to.
Lucia: Por favor, Mother, you have to. I don't want to lose you.
Lucrazia: I am not a good mother, Lucia. You have suffered and it's my fault. And look at your sister; I didn't supervise her. Everything I wanted for you two failed.
Lucia: Because I love you and it doesn't matter that you're not perfect, Mother. It's me, Mother. Tell me you get it.
Lucrazia continues to cry as Lucia goes out to the sitting room.
Carlota: What happened? What did she say? Will she accept the treatment?
Lucia: No, she doesn't want to.
Carlota: We need to find a way to convince her.
Lucia: Not for the moment. The news took her by surprise. The negative attitude will take time.
Carlota: But the disease won't wait that long.
Lucia: I know.
They clasp hands.
The barn just outside Hermosillo: Saul counts what's in Esther's purse as El Gordo arrives. El Gordo is angry because thanks to Antolin (or so he thinks) he is a suspect in Gerry's murder. The two argue briefly and finally agree to go through with their plan to kidnap Alex and demand a ransom large enough for them to leave the country.
Casa McGuire: Ivan and Alex find Tony asleep in his study. They talk about Alex being alone in the afternoons and that he'll ask if he can spend two afternoons a week with Carolina. This anvil is now in place.
Commercial Break that leads with a promo for La Rosa de Guadalupe, The Columbine Episode. and La Que No Podia Amar.
Casa McGuire, study: Lucia calls Ivan to tell him about Lucrazia's illness and to tell him she's going to Berenice's to get her to help.
Berenice's Apt: David arrives and Berenice doesn't let him in. She tells him to leave. She is angry with him because he didn't trust her to know that he went looking for Saul. At the next knock it's Lucia. She lets her in.
Casa Mondragon: JJ's lawyer informs him that he is in debt and that after the divorce his assets will be less than half of what he currently has. He's going to need help. JJ actually has the gall to think that Ivan will bail him out of this. What hubris.
Berenice's Apt: Berenice agrees to visit Lucrazia the next day. Ivan arrives to pick Lucia up. She mentions the possibility of a transplant. She tells him that best compatibility is between relatives.* Finally she tells him she just wants to forget everything and asks that they make love. They kiss and we get flashbacks to many of their previous lovemaking scenes. They're still in Berenice's apartment.
*That's another anvil.
Avances:
Confrontation between Ivan and JJ, and it looks like El Gordo is using Maripaz in his scheme.
Vocabulary:
cynico cynic
mover to move or let go
porqueria dirty or disgusting thing
rencoroso(a) resentful

Cuando Me Enamoro #167 Wednesday 12/14/11 Augie smells victory, Fina takes matters into her own hands... Nata debating herself: Should I stay (believe you) or should I go (forget you)...
Again Nata in bedroom, gets a shirt of Jero’s from the armoire… hugs it, kisses it and remembers the not so happy moments when they first arrived together at LaB and he asked Lazaro to put her bags in the guest room… then at the beach when he rejected her request to make love and she told him this was her last time requesting and he would not touch her again. Back to present… you didn’t even take your things…. How do you want me to forget you, Jero!! Tell me how to forget … song says ‘its better that way’… she reminds when he went to Cruz de Amor and accused her of being ‘Augie’s current lover… after not showing up at the appointment/date… and sends him the divorce papers instead… back to present. Now won’t only have to hate your absence, but also your presence. You decided to leave me… very well. You will not be in my life anymore, you decided for the both of us.

Una Familia Con Suerte #49 Wed 12/14/11 Why did Vince sit on a nest?
Why did Vince sit on a nest? He's hatching a plot!
Vins meets the Japanese boss' wife at the airport. She's in full kimono and hair-chopsticks, but speaks 100% Mexican Spanish. Vins is clearly straining to maintain the charade of being Pancho, even making up some stuff about vegetables to sell it some more. She is fascinated with everything Mexican and says so, prompting Vins to step it up with his Pancho-isms (mainly just saying "chido" a lot).
In an impressive display of cultural literacy, an erhu plays traditional Chinese music in the background as they part ways (but they'll have dinner later).
Tomas is trying to console a moaning Lena. She thinks Fred is still after Moni. Tomas frowns, and is clearly thinking about juicing him some tangerine, but decides to stay with her, promising, somewhat ominously, that he will "fix" the situation. She cheers up a bit, even giggles.
We had a lot of dull, whiny, awful-child-acting-y scenes with Pancho and Chela and Temo rehashing the same old routine. Nothing new. Temo asks Pancho why he won't marry Chela. At some point Fers shows up, wearing a lot of makeup (my mom points out) for someone who basically hangs around all day at home.
Pina is wearing that gray sack of a dress-skirt. The doorbell rings, and the maid shrieks like one of those dogs who only barks at visitors who ring the bell. It's Candy, who came at Pina's request. They'll have Tequilas, or at least that's what they think. The maid drinks it all before it makes it to P and C. Basically, Pina will bow to the focus group and bring Candy on the show, but makes a hilarious show of emphasizing that it's STILL HER SHOW (hugging herself as she delivers these words) and she'll be the boss.
Beca, in Guanajuato and wearing some seriously crazy shoulderpads, ignores Pancho's call.
Ana gushes about Manuel... she really was excited about him, but she's still thinking about Freddy. She's concerned about Lupe, and tears out of the room to go see her.
Now that Vins and Pina know what Freddy was really doing in Brazil, they call to bug him. Pina is mad, Vins plays it cool (knowing that he has an interest in supporting infidelity). He says he'll give Pina the phone. Freddy says NO! I FORBID IT! but gets an earful from Pina anyway.
Ahh, Chela slips on the old apron, but insists for Pancho that she's cooking for Temo and Temo only. there is some mention of "lolo's guitar..." what's that mean? anyway, she flounces off and Pancho sniffs the food saying that there's nothing like "sazon de chela..." yum/ew.
Lena is back to moaning, this time with Pepe. She's convinced that he'll go back to Monica, but Pepe doesn't want to believe that, for obvious reasons.
On to a cute scene with Pina and Vins. Vins is primping for his dinner-date(poorly) as Pina holds a mirror up to help him (poorly). The yuriko/yuri [the singer] pun is sorely belabored. There's some excellent physical humor with the mirror and the perfume and stuff, and Pina reminds him that they're not done discussing "the hug" and "the bag." We always think she lets him off the hook for his lame excuses, but she doesn't forget. Then she suggests that she come to the dinner, and Vins tries to bolt. BUT guess who shows up? Pancho! Now Pancho wants to come to dinner, and Vins, playing the gentleman for once, insists that he'll take care of this dull business and let Pancho go home to his sick kid. They go back and forth for a bit, slap each other jovially on the shoulders, and then do like 5 rounds of cheek-kissing. Best moment of the show.
Pina is quizzical about this display, and Vins, virtually twisting his Snidely-Whiplash [villain from Rocky and Bullwinkle, often found either waxing his moustache, tying Nell to the railroad tracks, or serving as foil to Dudley Do-right] moustache-tips, explains that he's got a hot plot in his hands that he can't explain right now. Soon, Pancho will be dethroned.
Pancho's buds take a breather from hitting on the maids to inform him that Vins is clearly up to some machinations in that twisted brain of his. To drive home the point, they growl and make lion noises. Pancho looks nervous.
Dinner with Yuri: Vins is trying to psych himself into the Pancho role. Fortunately, she needs little convincing. Turns out, she's really into "Mexican folklore," by which she means poor brown people and the way Vins is trying waay too hard to imitate them. She invites him up to her room and commences to pounce (despite his protestations). Nice to see the tables turned on him for once!
Update from Ezra's mom: Here is a painting of "la guitarra de Lolo." Lolo is a member of the pop band Miranda and the quote «Es un solo/¡Es la guitarra de Lolo!» is from a very noisy song called Don, which became their biggest hit although they (according to Wikipedia) don't like it. For some reason this phrase became a meme. Anybody know why?

La Fuerza del Destino #92 Tue 12/13/11 There Will Be Blood…In Lucrezia’s Urine and When They Find Saul
Gloria had a death in the family and has been laid low by a migraine. I don’t have a lot of time for one of my detailed mini-recaps, so here are the key 10 things that happened in no particular order:
1) Ivan plans a romantic dinner at Casa McGuire for Lucia with Benito acting as waiter and serving them the finest water in the house. They dangle their legs in the pool, listen to a 2-man serenade, and kiss.
2) Lucrezia pees blood and faints. The doctor has her do tests.
3) Antolin unsuccessfully searches all over town, in every hotel and under every rock for Saul. He threatens Gordo that he'll do more than leave a scar next time if he's protecting Saul.
4) Lucia allows herself to remember the face of her attacker. It’s Saul of course. She tells Ivan.
5) Ivan goes searching for Saul at his house and tells Esther it will be on her conscience if she helps a rapist go free. Ivan and Antolin conclude Saul has skipped town.
6) Saul calls Esther and spins her some story that Lucia was drunk, she came looking for him, things just went too far, and he didn’t drug her. If Esther believes this bull she’s an idiot. He begs her for money.
7) Post hypnotherapy session, Lucia has Ivan hug her, then they discuss what it is she wants to do about Saul. She doesn’t want any contact with him, nor does she want Perla to have any contact with him. She must decide if she wants to pursue pressing charges against him.
8) The Ag Assoc calls a meeting about the findings of the audit and require JJ to be there.
9) Gordo takes Saul to the rundown house of some relative 30 kilometers outside of Hermosillo. Saul complains bitterly about the conditions, not having a car, and not having money. They decide to put their kidnap Alex plan in play in order to get quick cash.
10) Camilo refuses to give in to MP’s blackmail threats in a satisfying “Frankly my dear, I don’t give a damn!” moment.

Una Familia Con Suerte #48 Tue 12/13/11 Beto channels Paul Revere, Vince channels Pancho, Ana gets a proposition.
Chela's not coming back, she tells Pancho; he replies: "But when you're ready, our arms will be open, we love you and miss you." He leaves. More tears.
Now the maids are cooking dinner for los Lopez, an improvement over Candy's salty spaghetti. Pancho reports: his mission was a failure, they must endure Chela's continued absence. Temo is cranky and doesn't want to go to school or eat dinner.
Someone's at the door: it's Monica! Cheering and jeers of encouragement from the tribe! Moni tells Pepe she's wracked with guilt about what she said to him; he says no worries, he didn't believe any of it. "Polar bears!" he says (I don't know why). She cries a lot and then kisses him. Mmm. Then she cries some more and runs away.
Freddy and Vince talk on the phone. Daddy says, be careful with the girl. Pina wants to know if he's wearing his sweater. "Don't be intense, mommy."
Ana sings a sad love song and cries. Freddy is NOT WORTH IT. Ana tells Lupita: love is wrecking everybody's life.
In Brazil, Elena has dressed up in hopes that Freddy will not merely bonk her but will actually also take her to dinner. Nope. He gives her more money and leaves.
Lupe has a great report card. Pancho tells her he's embarrassed he ignored Chela's non-platonic love all those years. Lupe says she'd like him to marry Chela; he reminds her he loves Chela like a sister.
Manuel visits Ana and brings her: a tiny accordion! And kisses her! And says he's way in love with her. She punches him a lot and wriggles. "Be my girlfriend!" She runs away.
Chela, with her gypsy friend Jessenia, cries some more.
Rebe is going on a trip to the provinces to fix a problem in a plant. Pancho gets no kiss goodbye.
Catalina sees Candy doing her exercises on the grass and mocks her for not having a boyfriend. Candy says she hasn't had the greatest luck with guys, they promise you everything and then are unfaithful.
Catastrophe! Beto sobs. "Is it the invasion of the gringos?" Pancho asks. "No, worse! The Japanese are Coming! The Japanese are Coming! In a few hours! We're not ready!" Pancho tries to calm his hysteria and get him to collect the needed papers.
Sandra tells Vince she returned the expensive pocketbook. He complains to Enzo: "She acts like a second spouse or my mother!" Enzo has come to say, the Japanse are coming. They think it will be a shipwreck for the grocer!
In the office they share, Lupe sees Monica crying. In comes Elena, sobbing, back from Brazil. "He left me in the hotel all the time - don't say 'I told you so!!' " Lupe says to Moni: "What a jewel your ex is!"
Catalina debriefs with Pina after meeting with Pina in the yard. "We talked about men's natural infidelity. And I'm not surprised Vince went for her with a body like that." "He hasn't touched me for centuries." "Pay him back with the same coin."
Enzo tries to snap Vince out of it: "This woman Candy gives purpose to your life!? What about her vulgarity? You complained about the Lopez Horde of Savages, now you whine about Candy Candy Candy. I'm worried about you." Vince: "You don't like me acting like a teenager? It's an accident of life that I love my enemy's sister."
Pancho's buddies say he shouldn't ask Vince to help with the Japanese. But when Ana calls and says Temo has a fever, Pancho asks Vince to pick them up at the airport. "Now I'm a chauffeur?" Vince gripes.
Lupita reports to Tomas about the Brazil disaster and warns him: It's apapachos (cuddles) your sister needs, not scolding.
Vince tells the Japanese Takamoto Cosmetics chief's wife that HE is Pancho. "You don't seem Mexican," she says, "you are blond and have blue eyes." Her husband is coming on a later flight and she takes advantage of his absence to make a play for Vince! He gets her sympathy by humbly admitting: I'm a widower and have four children."
Temo is sick in bed, his dad is hovering over him worried but ineffectual - and suddenly, here's Chela to the rescue. She sends Pancho to call the pediatrician. Temo lays sick-child-guilt on Chela - "Come back to us! I don't want that woman to live with us or marry my dad."
