Sortilegio - Hello Telenovela Lovers!
Mi nombre es Serendipitypb or PB.
Several years ago I had what I thought was a novel idea. :) (I seriously have to roll my eyes now that it was a novel idea.) I would learn Spanish by watching Spanish Television and listen to Spanish in my car as I drove from place to place with my job.
I started recording a show but as I flipped stations my hubby said he would be more apt to watch if I record this one (that he saw pass by) instead of the one I was recording. So I changed my recording, and soon had about 30 or so episodes. Trying to get the television from hubby who likes football isn't easy.
Hubby had to leave town for week and I had a weekend marathon that took me to the first time Leti and Don Fernando were together. I became a LFMB addict. Yes, an addict. Hubby watched with me when he came back, at least for a few months. I had missed months in the beginning because of my timing but I sure started watching at the best time. Of course, I could understand practically nothing, so I searched and searched on the WEB, and finally came across Caray, Caray, where I could learn what I missed, and I have been grateful for this site ever since. I did have a very difficult time getting over my disappointment with how LFMB played out, but I was stuck to the very painful end.
Since then I have been silently with you all through Pasión, Tontas, MEPS and I can't remember what others. I bought several full length telenovelas including Betty la Fea, L FMB, Pasion de Gavilanes and cut versions of Alborado, Amor Real to name a few. You have all helped me turn the light bulb on with your recaps and comments. Thank all of you for your dedication and hard work, and Melinama for starting Caray, Caray!
Some of my time has been freed up recently and I thought that I would try to give back. I am going to attempt to recap Sortiliego on Wednesdays. Note that I did not say a good recap. I am sure I really have no idea what I am in for, and if any of you recappers have any advice, I sure could use it. I don’t have a beanie, but I had instructions somewhere on how to make one. I could use help though, with some instructions on how to post this so that it goes to the right place.

Bienvenidos, Serendip. You have a lot more guts than I do, signing up for a recapper position. Too bad that you haven't joined in the fun with comments of your own till now, but at least, by reading along, you know how much fun it can be. Never having recapped, I don't have any advice for you, and I can only imagine the work that it must require, which is the main reason that I haven't volunteered myself, but I for one applaud anyone that steps up to the task. Again, welcome aboard!

Welcome PB! Don't worry about having perfect recaps. My Spanish isn't even good enough to attempt a recap, so I'm grateful to everyone who is willing to do it.
Thanks for volunteering, Serendipitypb. I've been hooked on novelas since I surfed into the middle of Alborada and saw Luis [FC]. I still don't understand much of the dialogue , so I appreciate the recappers . Bueno suarte.

I guess the only real advice I can offer is to not feel like you have to include every detail. Get the important plot point and anything that's interesting, but if people are having the same conversation for the umpteenth time it's totally fine to gloss over it. Also, the readers are great about filling in missing detail so if there's something you really can't explain don't worry about it.
To me, the best recaps have a personal spin and some humor, but every recapper has his or her own style of providing that.

Hi, PB, thank you for volunteering for the challenging but fun job of recapper. As Julia said, one of the best parts of reading recap is getting a bit of the personality of the recapper. So feel free to write it however you like, short or long, funny or not. If you don't understand a part, you can write "I have no idea what they said, but I loved their outfits". No one will mind. I normally record the show, and play it back with the closed captions, pausing and rewinding if necessary. I often watch an entire scene (they usually last only 1-2 minutes), then write a little paragraph about what I just saw. Suerte!

Welcome Serendipitypb. Each recap you write will seem easier than the previous one. And your readers will be supportive and encouraging. Well, you know that...you've been reading the blog.

Please someone tell me when sortilego is on? I looked for the listing and it's not on there. I know the soap that is going to end soon is going to be a two hr ending, and I think sortilego is going to replace it.
Anyway thanks for recapping and i will really enjoy the recapping of sortilego, and it doesn't have to be perfect. I just appricate you doing that for us.

Welcome PB! What fun to have you on board and thank you very much for joining the recapping team. I was petrified when I first started, but once I relaxed and started having fun with it recapping became addictive. It's a great way to learn Spanish and to laugh with people who share that interest. I agree with those who said when you get to a difficult part it's best to forge ahead and let others help fill in the blanks later. I still find myself getting bogged down on one or two stupid details, gah!
Tenshi29/Rebecca: Sortilegio starts on this Tuesday, 10/06. It's on at 8 PM Central/9 Eastern. MEPS Fin starts at 7PM Central/8PM Eastern and is a total of 3 hrs. We don't know if the first hour is a repeat of Friday's show or not.
PB, welcome and good luck. I've been recapping for a very short time, and truly enjoy doing it. Julia has offered up excellent advice, as well as Judy, Hombre, and Sylvia, all of whom I consider mentors. Just have a good time doing it. Looks like this show will be fun.

It took me most of the season to figure out how to post to the sidebar. One day I just decided I was going to get it, and I got it. Some of the terminology in the instructions doesn't match up with the "click" words. So, just use your imagination a little. Good luck.

Hi PB, Welcome. The first recap is the hardest. So when you finish that one, remind yourself that they will get easier.
I only recapped Tontas, but I have a few tips that helped me.
1. In the first few weeks, have a list of characters handy. Perhaps even jot down a condensed list as you watch the first few days, e.g. "the three sisters: Margarita, Gardenia, Florecita." I've wasted a lot of time trying to find the name of a minor character I want to refer to, and a simple list would've helped.
2. Novelas love to ping-pong scenes. They'll bounce back and forth between, for example, the evil stepmother with her toady in the mansion, then the heroine caring for her dying mother, back and forth, back and forth. I find it's easier to cluster the evil stepmother scenes of one ping-pong series, into one paragraph, then cluster the corresponding heroine scenes in the next paragraph. My mentor Julie taught me that one, and it helps.

I did the same thing searched for websites just to tell me what the show was saying in spanish, thank goodness for Carey Carey, it's now one of my fav websites that i go to everyday.
