La Fea Más Bella #31-32 10/4/10 When the Cat's Away...

Read Kim's original recap. Note, that recap covers Caps 30B-32A. Cap 31 starts at the section, “Missing Recap 6: What's more embarrassing.” If you don’t want to read ahead, stop at the section, “Missing Recap 8: Kids, Money and Glue.” That begins Cap 32.

Capitulo 31

1. Fernando accepts Luigi’s bet. Lui says this is the start of a new stage in their relationship. We’ll see.

2. Lety’s parents pick her up at the bar. Fernando goes to Marcia’s and says he feels like he lost something important tonight.

3. Fernando tries to brief Lety about his trip, but she keeps finishing his sentences. It indicates how well she knows him and takes care of him.

4. Fernando informs the executives that Lety will be completely in charge while he’s gone. He tells Luigi the top models are only for the filming day, not preproduction days.

5. Marcia implores Fern to pay attention to the wedding preparations eventually. Lety fantasizes that Fernando dances with her and tells her how much he’ll miss her.

6. Omar whistles and Paula comes running for a nooner. She pouts because he won’t make a commitment. Alicia tells Marcia about how great her relationship is going with Omar, while Fernando eats Marta’s lunch.

7. The cuartel takes a late lunch while “the cat’s away.” Ali tattles to Lopez, but Lety pulls rank. Ali refuses to do work for Lety, so Lety asks Sara and Lola to fill in as secretary to the president, along with extra pay. Ali relents.

8. The two weeks pass as Lety moons over Fernando’s picture, and we hear Angélica singing Aqui Estaré. See the lyrics in English here. Very appropriate for this stage of the show.

9. Fernando calls Lety for the sales figures. She reports that the ad agencies have canceled all their projects, and they’re in deep kimchi.

Capitulo 32

Kim’s recap for Cap 31 spans two web pages. Read Cap 32, Part 1, starting at the section, “Missing Recap 8: Kids, Money and Glue.” Then go to Cap 32, Part 2, and stop at the section, ““Missing Recap 10: Delicious sandwiches.” That’s the end of Cap 32. Then come back here to discuss it.

1. The cuartel moms bring their kids to work since their pal Lety is in charge. Marta says Alicia’s paycheck isn’t ready, just to torment her. The kids find it, and it gets stuck to Ali’s butt. Ali tattles to Lopez.

2. Lety calls the deadbeat clients. Luigi hires top models. Lety tells him they’re only for filming days, not preproduction. Lui says she can’t interfere with his work, and he quits.

3. Tom tells Lety their investments have already earned 300P. Lety tells Pop they’re investing money Don Fernando set aside, and they’re earning management fees for the work. She tells Tom that Conceptos is in financial crisis.

4. The banker visits because Conceptos is behind on loan payments, and he’s heard rumors that they’re short on work. Lety reassures him.

5. Omar convinces Fernando: they lost a lot of business because of the Benny disaster. They’re broke and can’t make loan payments. Fernando wants to take a loan from FI to protect them. FI would lien them first so the bank can’t lien them.

6. Omar advises Fernando to wait and see if the LA deals pan out. Fernando says that by then it will be too late. They need to at least start the process now.

7. Alicia tattles that Luigi quit, thanks to Lety.

Random observations.

1. Note the wooden model when Fern is worrying about finances. Its hands are raised. Is it pleading to heaven? Or drowning in the flood?

2. Near the end when Alicia comes in to tattle, she makes Camil laugh and he quickly shoots his hand up to cover his face, but as he leans over his desk, you can still spot that he’s laughing.

3. When Marta finds Alicia’s check in reception, she’s eating melon with Tajín (or a generic brand) – see the bottle? Tajin is a WONDERFUL condiment – lemon, chili, and salt. Not too hot, mostly sour. Mexicans eat it on fruit. I love it on vegetables, especially corn on the cob. Also popcorn. Go to a Latino market and ask for it – you’ll love it!

4. I put the link in the recap, for the lyrics to Aquí Estaré (with English). Here is a translation of the Fea Más Bella song. Board Mom Melinama translated both.

5. Okay, you can call me a Fea anorak. But rewatching Fea, I’m catching a lot of things I didn’t notice the first time. During the “weeks pass” montage as Lety waits for Fernando to return, pay close attention. Near the beginning of the song, look carefully at the image where Lety’s hand is on her RIGHT cheek. The image is reversed! Her part is on the wrong side, her watch is on the wrong side, and on the books behind her, the word “Conceptos” is a mirror image! Also when she’s in the white sweater, the Benny photos are missing from her wall.

Hi Paula, Just finifshed watching these both. Since I didn't pay match attention the first time, FF>>> the whole Alicia and her check deal. That was pretty funny. Also when Fernando was making Letty take all the stuff off his desk except he wanted to keep the card, That was cute.

Kim thanks for the recaps, and Paula once again thanks for all the work you put into this.

I appriciated the links to the songs.

I didn't even notice the tajin. I like it on jicama. I'll have to try it on popcorn.

Thank you for the link to the song lyrics, such a lovely song.

Clearly it's time for a daycare center at Conceptos. Somebody give those kids a play room!!

I thought it a huge disconnect when Luigi dissed the feas and his models laughed. Why? Because the models I have known (admittedly not very many) have all said they were considered ugly as youngsters or teenagers; and Luigi's models definitely looke like they could have been ugly ducklings.

What a change at Conceptos! The morning of Fernando’s return, the fea enters the gate with honors (a salute from Celso), and the bellas are locked out! Better yet, when Fernando arrived at the gate, he told the models, "Let's go in and talk about it." The models said, "That monster wouldn't let us enter." Fern: "Monster? I see. Well, you cool your heels out here, and we can talk later." And Fernando Mendiola, playboy extraordinaire, left three models on the curb!!!

After the gay bar, and making the bet with Luigi, Fernando tells himself, and later Marcia, that he feels like he lost something important tonight. What do you think he lost? And what does he think he lost?

We've agreed that Fea is a Cinderella story. I guess Alicia agrees with us. The day before Fernando & Omar returned, Alicia told Lety, tomorrow the coach turns back to a pumpkin, and you turn back to being poor Cinderella. Ah, yes. Poor, poor Cinderella.

And when the men get back and the triumverate meets, it's Lety who gets the office chair, not Omar. Cinderella's moving up in the world!

I haven't had a chance to watch this episode yet since I was recapping last night, but I think Fernando feels he has lost his lofty status. When he first became president most of the staff were very deferential to him; he was large and in charge. Now they've all seen him completely bungle a major project and blow his top. He no longer has his image of control. Also, he is the president; the employees should come to him. Yet he had to go far outside his own comfort zone to seek out Luigi. Plus, the cooked books and shell company...he knows he's building a house of cards and he's not in a secure place of power.

I've been watching the wood figure. Last week it was holding its hands together in front, maybe like it was begging?

I think Fer's motivation goes even deeper than this recent presidency stuff. His parents raised the Villaroels after their parents died. Can you imagine being an only child with your parents all to yourself, and then suddenly three new kids show up and start competing with you for EVERYTHING? Especially if there's one kid who's your age and seems compelled to defeat you at everything.

A lifelong rivalry is bad enough, but when you have to grow up in a house with an ultra-competitive jerk who isn't even your brother, it probably messes with your judgment.

the family situation background and the timing of the Sr Villaroel's deaths might be different between BLF adn LFMB. In BLF they make us believe that did not happen until they were adults (and independent)and thus never lived together nor the Mendiolas 'adopt' the V's. Here they make us believe they did come to live together before the new generation was independent. Good point! that definitely plays a part on the Ariel/Fernando relationship

also in BLF Armando is not an only child... he had a sister (i believe older) who had fallen in love with a more humble guy, she got pregnant and the parents basically shipped her to Europe, she has a child and Armando is the only relative who interacts with her (on phone, he is on the phone with her when Marcela/Patri [marcia/alicia] come bargin in after the equestrian/club incident) regularly... that might have played a part in Armando adopting the 'protector' role with Betty...

this is straight from my BLF dialogue translation (happens the day Don Humberto is officially giving Fernando the presidency in the board room while the cuartel is at lunch, the cuartel is briefing Lety on the Mendiola/Villaroel's background)
Sofia tells Betty Armando had on his side Dona Margarita and Dona Camila. Betty asks who is Camila. They explain she is a sister of Don Armando’s who has been exiled in Switzerland, Betty asks why exiled, Bertha explains that she married a poor guy… in hiding because she was pregnant. But the family ended that marriage, apparently mostly Dona Margarita and they sent Camila and her ‘poor’ son to Switzerland. Ines reprimends AM for calling the baby ‘poor’, after all he is a Mendoza. Bertha claims they had to send her far away because the child looked exactly like the dad… Ines claims Camila left on her own initiative and if she has not returned is because she wants nothing to do with the family, the only one she contacts is Don Armando every once in a while.

just in case you need the relative names...
sofia = lola in LFMB
bertha = marta
margarita = teresita
ines = irmita
