La Fea Más Bella #159-160 1/7/11 Good Friday.

Capitulo 159.
Read Chapel Hill Fiddler’s original recap, then come back here to discuss it.

1. Marcia tells Lety, “You’re just a secretery who got lucky. You may be assistant to the president and a financial whiz, but you’re still just a employee. The owners here are the Villoreals and Mendiolas. You’re an accident. Someone who we can kick out the back door tomorrow. So go back down to the level where you belong.”

2. After that, Lety tells Caro, “Yes, please get me out of here. My life is falling to pieces. I want to get away.”

3. Humberto announces that they’re giving Fern and Marcia a house as a wedding gift.

4. Ariel announces that Lety owns FI. Fernando is shaken. Marcia is shocked. Humberto is barely moved – what does it matter? Marcia thinks it’s strange that Lety brags about her rich boyfriend with his job at FI, when Lety is the owner of FI. Ariel says that she completely manages the finances of Conceptos, which is their patrimony. As such, her personal business DOES matter. Ariel thinks something is being hidden.

5. Lety tells the truth about FI, but in a way intended to give a false impression. “The company is my novio’s (she glances at Fernando). In fact, he’s still a minority partner. He put it in my name because he figured I had good relationships with the banks, and I manage the money well. You could even interpret it as a gift.” (Fern glares at her.)

6. Marcia points out to Fern that he's given Lety his intimacies, while Lety has kept a lot of secrets from him. Fern asks her, "What harm does it do to our company, if Lety's novio puts Filmo Imagen in her name?" How, indeed?

7. Ali invites Tom to her apartment tonight at 10, and she'll cook for him. That's what Tom's hoping. And by the way, can he send her the money now? He hangs up and tells the car, "That Alicia, she doesn't love me; she loves you."

8. Marcia brings out her inner shrew, and she ridicules Fernando mercilessly in front of Omar, calling him a weakling and a clown, and saying that Lety leads him around by the nose. (You can read the hate in his eyes.) She says he's not the man she fell in love with. He agrees, but this is the man he is, whether she likes it or not. Marcia says, "What do you want? To cancel the wedding?" He says he intends to marry the woman he fell in love with (preterite tense, indicating an action that finished in the past). Marcia points out that he fell in love once, but he doesn't love her anymore. But she's still in love and she still wants to marry who he is now.

9. Omar is in a panic. Fernando looks like he's being crucified, to the point of even being in front of the tree. He points out that Lety rescued them, with so much confidence. In fact, the way she's beating Alicia shows how brilliant she is. He stands in awe of her.

10. Luigi admits to Irmita that he's helpless without her.

11. Fernando begs Lety to swear that she'll finish the doctored balance. She's shaken by what happened in the meeting. Ariel smells blood and he's going to dig until he gets to the bottom of it. She's afraid he'll discover the embargo. Fernando is sure that a perfectly doctored balance will protect them from anything Ariel can do. After he leaves, Lety wrestles with whether to produce the doctored balance.

I don't think I'll be able to post a summary of Cap 160. Sorry! My computer is in the shop, and I'm using my husband's, which limits me severely. The Cap 159 summary is probably rougher than usual for the same reason.

With Fernando, we obviously have an image of crucifixion, as demonstrated by Pata's photos (thanks, Pata!). Even to the point of how his feet are positioned! The question is, why? What does the symbolism represent? What are they saying? I'd love to hear everyone's read on it.

BTW, if we read it as a crucifixion, then we could also read the meeting with Ariel's accusations as the trial before the high priest (Humberto), and Marcia's abuse as the scourging.

Anyway. What do you think it all means?

I think it means that Ferni senses that he's in biiiiiig trouble and about to get nailed. Figuratively, if not literally.

When Ali tells the atny she’ll have the money to redeem her car tonight, she flips her hair into Ariel’s face because she doesn’t know he’s standing there. I think it’s to indicate that she’s not Ariel’s helpless victim anymore, now that she has Tom.

In the same breath, Marcia asserts that Fern doesn't love her anymore, and that she still wants to marry him. Remember back when she said she wasn't willing to marry a man who had another woman in his heart? By now she has ditched that requirement, along with all the other standards she held in the name of dignity.

The avalanche has begun. Fernando fell apart and fought Tom. Lety won’t forgive him, and she is much colder to him today, after the fight. Ariel discovered FI. Lety flirts with attacking Fern publicly. Marcia is attacking what he holds 2nd-most-dear and he hates her for it.

Don't you just love Humberto's speech? In front of everyone, he essentially says, "I thought my son was a total screw-up, but I guess he's not." Gee, thanks, Pop.

So I guess based on Humberto's public comment that he thought his son was a screw-up we can see the crucifixion scene as being abandoned by everybody including the father and he is just hanging there. Talk about daddy issues. Fernando is on his own down this slippery slop to the inferno (I wonder which circle he will land in) and no one will or is able to stop him.

This was an interesting episode. It wasn't exciting in terms of action but it has the feel that we're getting set up for some critical events. A lot of the tension was around whether Lety would really doctor the books or not, at least for those of us who haven't seen this yet. I guess we always knew she would but for Fernando it's not a given because his position hangs in the balance.

So what's different for Lety? She has new information from the psychic guy that affects her point of view. She is about to do something that compromises her ethics for the man she loves. She thinks she's about to get out of Dodge.

Was it just me or did Ana Leticia seem completely different and off the wall in this episode? Usually she acts stoned and stupid, this time she was bouncing off the wall. Although it was funny when Marcia strangled her.

Absolutely perfect screen shot yet again! Thank you Paula and other recappers for all your work. It sure makes watching this TN a more complete joy.

And did you notice Fernando's unusual calm as he rehashed in the conference room after the meeting? He's been in terror for what would happen in the meeting, and now he's in this sort of daze, talking about how Lety beats out Ali. What's up with that?

I'm leaving to pick up my computer. YEAH!!!!

Fernando is in a daze, I think. He's like a bird that just bounced off a window. (It happens all the time where I work.) That run-in with Ariel alone probably took ten years out of him.

He's been wound up for a while now, a nervous wreck, fighting, hung over, and probably sleep-deprived. He's exhausted and not thinking clearly.

Obviously he catches his second (or third or eighth) wind in time for the Cannes event, but I think he's pretty much running on fumes. (At least, that's my excuse for the bad decisions he's been making!)

He drinks a lot. It's hard to maintain clarity when one is boozing it up a lot.

Congrats on your computer!

Ups (Spanish for oops)! Somehow I forgot to post the recap to the sidebar, or to put links in the old recaps. But now I have my computer back and all is right with the world. Sorry!

Love posting on Saturday since I have time to rehash the whole week in my mind. I was struck when Fern told Omar that Lety is real. Poor sap he doesn't realize yet that she is as facile a liar as he is and she is hell bent on revenge. One giant anvil on the way.

I found it interesting that Omar is doing his level best to get Fern to admit out loud that he is in love with Lety. He recognizes the signs which lead me to believe that he was in love once and was hurt to the point that he now fears love as a bringer of pain. Man is he right on that one. Mama T who I always thought had zero mothering skills senses that something is wrong and different about Fern. That surprised me.

Lety annoyed me again. For someone who is supposed to be so smart her people perception skills are way off. She falls for the slick Miguel and when it goes south runs away and hides in her room turning a mistake into a greek tragedy. Then along comes Fern and she repeats her first mistake and is now doing her level best to run again. At least with Miguel she went looking for him to at least try and make sense of things but with Fern she lies, and refuses to tell him what is wrong when he is all but groveling. She is absolutely certain to continue believing everything a handsome guy tells her and then running when things don't go the way she wants them to.

She also never listens to anyone. When Christina tried to help her she blew her off, she does the same thing with Caro and even when Tommy Boy tells her bitterness is not attractive. PG is trying to warn her about the consequences of revenge and tells her that the man is suffering the same way. But does she listen? No, she has a brief moment of wondering about Fern and then continues down the path of revenge. It is incomprehensible to me that she doesn't see that in destroying him she will also destroy his whole family and Omar as well.

It also strikes me as petty that she wants Tomas to dump Alicia. While she is right that the woman is using him he is entitled to his dream love affair just as she was. While i'd like to think she is doing it to keep him from being hurt part of me thinks she is so bitter that if she can't be happy no one else can be as well. Anybody notice that when Caro offered her a job in Acapulco the first thing she did was whine that she couldn't afford it. Bring out the wet blanket persona yet again.

Ah yes and Fern drinking. That hip flask was absolutely bottomless. Either that or it takes very little to get him drunk. The novela hero hitting the sauce is a tried and true novlea cliche something that Fea usually manages to avoid.

True, she hasn't told Fern about the letter. But at least four times she has tied her rejection to the fact that he hasn't broken the engagement, and he recognized the link every time, and still has done nothing.

Fernando's song is, "I'd do anything in the world to get you back, except the thing that would get you back."

I don't think Lety overreacted to the Miguel incident at all. She was just a teenager. She risked a lot to be with him - she could have gotten knocked up, or whatever - and she gave up something that she took very seriously, only to find out the whole thing was a bet based on her being too ugly to have sex with.

If I felt that I'd had a shot at something I'd always wanted and didn't think I could have, only to find out that it had been a sick joke at my expense, I'd be devastated and turn my mistake into a Greek tragedy too.

Maybe some people would find such an experience easy to dismiss. I don't think I could.

I think there is a song by Meatloaf "I'd anything for love but I won't do that" for Fern. I also thought the bottomless flask interesting. But I am curious about the letters and cards in this novela. It seems when Fern has anything important to say to Lety he writes it in a card. I wonder why he can't just say these things to her face without the medium of the written word. Is this a plot device to have all these things on record for some one in the future finding out about Lety and Fern which I think is a lame or is it that he just can't say what he can write and then I am not sure why not.
I also agree with Julie. Lety did not overreact. I also think as humans it takes us a couple of times making the same mistake before we learn. This would fall under hoping for a different outcome next time!
Jenn

Jenn, it was Omar who insisted on the cards - but the stuff he wrote in them for Fern was so lame and shallow that Fern was compelled to write these more intimate things.

But it does makes me wonder (now that you mention it) if Fernando ever would have said these things to Lety's face if he hadn't been writing them down, or if he would have just let them remain unsaid.

Lety is writing lots of things too - some of which she should be saying to Fernando. But she's writing them in her diary rather than in cards, so he doesn't know about them at all. He's been revealing more things to her than she's been revealing to him. But that's no help to him since she doesn't believe anything he says!

Then again, she's been pretty open and blunt with him about what she wants him to do. :-)

Off Topic but could you guys all say a prayer for my congresswoman and the 18 other people who were shot this afternoon. Six are dead including a little girl. My city of Tucson and I are in total shock.

God have mercy. How disturbing. Yes, deciegirl, I will pray.

deciegirl, I was horrified to read about what happened to your congresswoman and those with her! Yes absolutely, I will say a prayer for her and for the others.

Deciegirl how awful! My prayers are with you and your community
Jenn

Deciegirl, I had no idea she was your congresswoman! I am lighting a candle tonight for Giffords and the other victims.

Paula, thanks for the recap. Deciegirl, my thoughts are with the
community of Tucson.
