La Fea Más Bella #189-190 1/28/11 Goodbye to Acapulco. Hello to a new dawn at Conceptos.

Capitulo 189.
Read Amanda’s original recap, then come back here to discuss it.

1. Fern tells PG he needs to put his life and his feelings in order. PG: You hit bottom, right? F: Yes. There’s Marcia. I don’t want to make the wrong decision. PG: Do you want to be the man you were before? F: NO! I want to fix the problems I caused the people who love me. PG gives him a hippy necklace to protect him, get rid of his sadness and fear, and give him harmony. That’s a lot to ask of some wooden beads.

2. Alicia tells Marcia they should be roommates. Marcia kicks Ali out. She tells Fern to pack his things. He stops her and asks if she can forgive him. Over time, could they recover what they lost? He gives her a kiss.

3. At the hotel waterfall, Aldo asks Lety to stay in Acapulco, but she has to go back to Conceptos. They say good-bye and Lety gives Aldo a small kiss, little more than you’d give your grandma.

4. Fern pulls away from Marcia’s kiss and says his face and everything hurts too much. Marcia touches his chest and says, “I know this pain will take a long time to heal, but I’ll be patient because I believe in you.”

5. Fern forces his way into the Padilla house and tells Erasmo that Lety is stealing his company. Mama pushes him out and shuts the door on his hand. Tom tells Lety and she’s MAD! Pop orders her to come home and face the board.

6. Aldo tells Caro that he and Lety kissed, and it was beautiful. I guess Aldo also switches to fantasy mode when kissing.

7. Lety tells PG she feels enormous hate toward Fern. PG warns, “If you return with hate and a desire for revenge, you’ll lose. The woman who returns should be strong and composed.” She says he dragged her family into it, and that she can’t forgive.

8. Fern arrives at work with a NECKTIE! Marcia tells MamaT about last night, but she’s afraid he still feels for Lety. MamaT refuses to think such things, and instead believes what she wants to be true.

9. Lety wants to keep growing. PG tells her to face her demons and forgive Fern. MamaJ prays that for God to help Lety forgive Fern and put all her anger and hurt into God’s hands. Finally Lety can begin. She states all her charges against Fern. Worst of all, he didn’t believe in her love for him, but she knows it was because of Ariel. She forgives him in the name of the love she had for him and still has. She still wants the best for him.

Capitulo 190.
Read K-Fuego’s original recap, then come back here to discuss it.

1. PG says “Sim, sim, sala-bim, Ala peanut butter sandwiches,” and he pronounces that Lety will live happily ever after o algo así.

2. Erasmo arrives and wants to talk to Humberto. Alicia tries to push him around condescendingly, but he says, “Oh, you work for my daughter!” Ali announces him to the board.

3. Marcia doesn’t want Humberto to meet with Erasmo because any news of Lety is bad news for Marcia. She looks fearfully at her recién captado Fernando. She tells Humberto not to meet him, but she doesn’t have Fernando’s skill at instant excuses. All she can think of is, “I know what I'm talking about.” Fernando eagerly accompanies his father. Ariel thinks Erasmo should join the meeting. Fern nixes that, saying “He asked to talk to my father.”

4. Erasmo respectfully greets Humberto, but he curtly tells Fernando, “I didn’t come to speak with you.” Marcia follows them out (she must be really scared) and in the refined tone she would use with Lety just before her viper strike, she says, “I don’t understand why you’re here.” Even Humberto is surprised by her rudeness. Erasmo says, “I didn’t come to talk to you, either.” The two men go into the presidencia.

5. Lety feels much better for having forgiven Fernando. She feels like a weight is lifted and she’s ready to return. At the airport, Lety praises the wonders of Aldo. He arrives a moment too late to give her beach-in-a-box.

6. PapaH tells PapaE he would like to resolve this apart from lawyers. Erasmo wants to settle it as gentlemen. Lety will return their company down to the last cent. He boasts of his family’s high ethics. Humb politely points out that her actions indicate otherwise. Each man:
A. points out the other’s hijo behaved unacceptably,
B. accepts a certain amount of blame for his hijo’s actions, and
C. defends that his hijo's actions were understandable given the circumstances.
Humberto boasts that he punished his son and drove him to the point of suicide as any upright father should, and that notion of loving and supporting your children is for sissies. Oh, no, maybe I translated that wrong. Then they talk about the good old days when men were real men, women were real women, and small furry creatures from Alpha Centauri… no, wrong show.

7. Erasmo says Lety returns today. Fern smiles for the first time in days, and oh, what a smile! When he hears Erasmo talking about Tio Lazaro, he knows he’s out of the woods. The men know they’re in good hands with the other, and Erasmo insists that Humberto oversees this matter himself Erasmo tells the cuartel that Lety will never return to Conceptos.

8. Humberto reports to the board that the matter was a battle of nerves, not a robbery attempt. There won’t be any criminal action. Fernando is pleased because Lety did not betray him, Marcia panics, Ariel sneers, “You don’t really believe them, do you?” and Humberto smacks him down. Fernando masks his delight when Marcia’s looking. Humb says Lety’s lawyers are coming simply to process the documents correctly. Lety won’t be coming. The HaHA’s arrive and Ali tries to turn them away until Sanchez mentions that Lety owns the whole company.

Comments:
Fern tells Ariel, “He asked to talk to my father. And your father. Putativo.” “Putative” is a loaded word meaning “alleged,” and it usually implies that you’re the product of adultary.

Funny blooper! Marcia asks Fern about his visit to Lety’s house. He gets frustrated and smacks his hands on the desk. Marcia, reminding him that his hand is supposed to be injured, says, “Your hand.” Fern looks at her and says, “Ow!”

In the airplane, notice Lety’s cracked lower lip? Either she got a bad sunburn, or she’s been sick. They’re not cold sores.

Marcia didn’t take long to pick up the reins again. In the morning she marches into Fern’s office and asks (with a sweet smile of course) where he went this morning without telling her. And when Omar asks Fern if he’s sure, Marcia butts in and answers for him, “Yes.” Heaven forbid that the man she loves so much should be allowed to think for himself. Yes, Marcia wants to put that gold ring on Fernando, but not in his finger – instead, in his nose, all the better to control him.

I have to say that since the meeting watching LFMB has been a chore more out of habit and something to procrastinate at but the smile on Fern's face today when he heard Lety was coming back was priceless. It almost makes me not want to strangle him for kissing Marcia and spending the night.

I'm sorry that today's summaries ran so long. I can usually keep them under 20 lines. The 2007 recaps were very thorough and accurate, but certain scenes really begged for "color commentary." Also in Cap 190, I was tremendously relieved that finally we're done with Acapulco and Erasmo is putting the FI/Conceptos matter back on track. I enjoyed the changes so much that I couldn't restrain my "pen."

Jenn, I admit I'm with you. I didn't want to be a sourpuss on the board (though PatA got an earful of my griping), but I really hated watching this week's shows. One downer after another. With Cap 190 we've turned the corner and we're in a new phase. Hallelujah! Some great caps are coming next week!

Apparently last year Marcia and Ali watched the pageant and snarked about imperfections in the contestants, and Ali can’t understand why Marcia doesn’t want to play that game again. I guess when you lose the love of your life to la fea más fea, it makes you question your beauty-based attitudes.

Jenn,
I am also with you on watching LFMB lately has been a chore. Previously, it was "I can't wait for the next day's episode".
Now, I have it DVRd and really am not yearning to watch. In fact, I read this posting today without watching it first.

I think it all boils down to Lety plus Aldo. It doesn't make good screen time.
He is sooooooo blahhhhhh and tooooo oldddd for Lety. Blech (as some of the 2006 posters have refered to him as)
Blech it is.

Diann

Thank you for the recaps - I enjoy the color commentary feel free to do it again.

One small observation from 189 - did anyone notice the camera in a few shots with Lety on the beach? I did and it was distracting - I know they don't have the biggest budgets, but that was an amateur move imho.

FINALLY - I am happy that the story is finally starting to move along. I was disappointed that Fern went back to Marcia, but not surprised...with a relationship that was as supposedly as serious as theirs was - it was bound to happen.

PG is a busy guy...I love how people in LFMB land can just pop in and out of Acapulco as quickly as a blink, but Lety will take hours to get home to MC.

I hope that she really has strength, peace and goodness like PG promised...she's going to need it.

Now I want to know what those two lawyers will say? Will they muck up all the progress H & E made earlier? I hope not, but for some reason I think that it's bound to happen. The company is bound to be the source of continued conflict or else this show is over in 5 eps?

I didn't find this week painful, but i am glad that we're done with a lot of it.

Remember on Tuesday's recap all of use were commenting on Camil's talent, especially regarding that wonderful opening scene with Paty (Alicia), and the fight? Well, I e-mailed Jaime and said, "the Caray recap board THOROUGHLY enjoyed your work on today's Fea episodes," and I took the liberty of including snips of your comments.

He replied today:
Muchas gracias Paula! Que bellas palabras de todos.
Saludos,
J.

Frankly, I want to smack Fernando and smack him good. How dare he go back to Marcia? The boy, and I use that term deliberately, has not grown up and is running back to his blankie - Marcia. He's happy that Lety is coming back. Wonder what she'll say when she finds out that Fernando spent the night at Marcia's? Do you think she shrug that off or believe that he really doesn't love her? If Fernando wants to truly win Lety for life, he'd better start thinking like a grown-up, make mature decisions, and keep his pants zipped and mouth closed when he is around Marcia. Right now,, Aldo is looking pretty good in my book. Lety deserves so much better than the Fernando that exists now. He hasn't hit rock bottom. I do realize that the two of them cannot heal and cannot grow while together; it must be done individually. But really? Is Fernando deliberately trying to shoot himself in the foot by becoming involved with Marcia again? Give me a flippin' break!!!!!

Thanks Paula. Just finished watching these chapters. I am glad we are done with Acapulco. That was a long stretch.

I noticed the hand incident as well with fernando when he had a delay ouch reaction. I thought he was just trying to be funny.

Really enjyed the scene where he was listening in on Don Erasmo and Don H.

For some reason I seem to be enjoying all the scenes with Thomas and Lety's parents. I always fast forwarded them before.

Aww that's nice Paula H! thank you!! :) I've been following Jaime's twitter account lately upon your recommendations as well.

Pata I'm really enjoying Tomas and Julieta together. They are funny - esp when they are trying to pull the wool over Erasmo's eyes.

BarbaraM - I think if Lety finds out about Marcia and Fern getting back together - it will only (wrongly) prove to her that he didn't really love her and it was all a lie. I think she'd be even more likely to get with Aldo if that ever happens... we'll see I don't think that's the last of the Aldo storyline...

I also am not so sure at this moment Fern really does love Lety. I know people here will disagree with me, but if his actions are love, then I'd sure hate to be on the receiving end of his hate. I think he is/was in lust with her and how she made him feel. Hopefully he'll get to real love after he grows up a bit. Just my 2 cents.

Poor Aldo, his luck is changing. Up until today's caps, when he was at water with Lety, he couldn't lose – dinner on the yacht, diving, the kiss in the ocean, etc. But today he was right in front of a waterfall, and still she refuses to extend her stay in Acapulco. Right at the surf line, she said “Adios.” The fact that he didn’t get to the airport in time seems to be another sign that his luck is turning.

I loved the scene between Erasmo and Alicia. She struts like she’s somebody and she tries to indimidate him, but Erasmo is impervious to it. Instead he stares her down and she actually shows some shame. And when he said, “You work for Lety,” he was actually right!

Pata, I'm enjoying Tom with Erasmo this time around, but I'm especially enjoying Alicia. I used to hate her scenes, but now that I understand both her speech and her personality, I pay close attention to her scenes and love 'em!

Diann, it wasn't Aldo & Acapulco that bothered me this past week. It was Fernando's hopeless downward spiral. Now that he's shown a spark of life, I'm happy again.

GP, I didn't notice the camera on the beach. But Mexican TNs are filmed at a breakneck pace. I heard that with Fea, the rule was, keep filming no matter what. That's why you have some incredible bloopers that are left in. At one point, Omar blows his line (nothing new), but he gets so lost that he points at the teleprompter and says, "Where are we?"

PatA, yes, I think it's awesome that not only does Jaime answer e-mails, but he answers them himself rather than having "his people" write for him. I think it's also cool that he puts himself out there on Twitter and often posts tweets of substance rather than just fluff. He announced today that he's been on for a year now, and it's a great medium for him.

Barbara, two observations regarding your comments about Fern getting back with Marcia. First, even though he's sharing her bed, we can be reasonably sure he hasn't touched her. He never touched her after the hotel with Lety, and that was when he wasn't as in love with Lety, and Marcia was putting on a full court press. If he couldn't then, I'm sure he can't now. Second, he went back to Marcia when he heard the judge had ruled for FI. At that point he concluded that Lety really was taking the company. That meant she really hated him and wanted revenge, and he lost all hope that he would ever see her again. That belief pushed him to suicide, and it pushed him back to Marcia.

Stupid choice, I'll wholeheartedly agree. But winning Lety seemed impossible. The problem is, now he knows Lety did NOT steal the company, so he has hope again, but still he's staying with Marcia. For that, he'll pay.

Paula,
I agree whole heartedly that our Ferni has not touched Marcia. You are right, if he hasnt been with her since Lety/Hotel night, he certainly wouldn't be with her now. He wasn't in love with Lety back then, but there was something brewing that he just couldn't "be with" Marcia. (Or ninguna mujer) as he said, that one night on the porchstep. I just loved that line and the look on Lety's face.

Yes, Fern thinks he's lost it all, Lety, the company, and stupid Omar put it into his head that "maybe she never loved you after all" STUPID Omar. I digress. So he admits he wanted to die in Acapulco, admits to PG he hit bottom, and he is still not grown up enough to be alone. So, voila, he goes to Marcia.
But, love Marcia, no way. And he knows it, look at the way the kiss went. He realizes the difference in how he feels with her and how he feels with Lety.
He is just SAD, SAD, SAD.

And Senorita Leticia is in Acapulco gallivanting around with Mr. GreyBeard. Riding a horse indeed....Ridiculous.

Diann

Georgia Peach, I am inclined to agree that Fernando doesn't really love Lety. He loves how she makes him feel and the love she has for him. He keeps making one stupid mistake after another and there are consequences for those. Aldo cares enough about Lety that he will leave the safe cocoon of Acapulco to come after her. Would Fernando do the same? No! Instead he runs to Marcia. Whether he had sex with her or not, he should not have kissed her or stayed the night there. Immature decisions will lead to immature results. Fernando will be on an upward bent when he starts making more mature decisions. For now, he's still the little boy that just has to have the security of someone loving him since he doesn't love himself.

Paula, let me see if I can explain myself. Fernando is childish and loves Lety with a childish love. That cannot last nor make either one of them happy. Lety needs a mature love, more like what Aldo probably could offer her, that is accepting of who she is and embraces that. Fernando still considers how he looks loving a fea. He loves that Lety loves him and that she, in her way, validates who he is. Her love accepts him with all his flaws; his love has matured to the point where it will move heaven and earth to be with Lety. Right now, Aldo is the best for Lety. And when Fernando meets him and sees how good he is to Lety then I believe Fernando will start to change more. When he meets Aldo for the first time and sees the two together, he'll have a mirror placed in front of him, metaphorically speaking, and he will see himself, probably for the first time, as he really is. He has an inkling now of just how selfish he is, but the point will be drive home to him when Fernando sees how unselfish Aldo is with Lety. Don't get me wrong. I'm still rooting for a Fernando and Lety marriage; just not right now. They would destroy each.

I think Fern went back to Marcia out of gratitude and not habit and maybe this is one of the transformations taking place. She did come and save him from his suicide attempt, though I think it was more a cry for help because if he really contemplated suicide he would have driven his car off a cliff or into a wall. He is thanking her by giving her what he knows she wants. Now what he wants is another matter. It makes perfect sense to be very grateful to someone that you would be with them even when you know that you do not love them.
Thanks Paula for your personal revelation. I think a lot of us like this story because of the things that resonant with our life experiences. If only our trials were so well scripted and included exotic locales!!
Jenn
P.S Anyone read about cruise ships not docking in Mexico? Maybe my Acapulco trip should wait....

Jenn,
I loved your explanation of why Fern went to Marcia and how you see it as gratitude but not love. My thoughts are now clear on that motive of Fern. It makes sense to me and I can accept Fern's "one step back". (Just wish he'd get to the "two steps forward quickly) Jajajaja

Diann

I really enjoy the dialogue going on here. Thank you Paula H for sharing such a personal story. It helps me to understand Fern's development a little better, although I agree with BarbaraM wholeheartedly when she says that Lety and he would destroy each other if they were to get together now. Maybe to take it a step further - he does need someone as a coach in his corner (instead of Omar) encouraging him and giving him little assignments to aid in his transformation.

I agree that Fern went back to Marcia because she was there for him when he felt he had no one else. I really felt for the first time this entire series that she truly loves Fern. I feel badly for her because she has hope now that might end up even more severe heartbreak in a few weeks. I hate that Fern's mistakes have to involve and hurt so many other's besides himself. I think that's my biggest problem with his selfishness.

Like I've said before both he and Lety need to do a lot of healing before they are ready to love each other. I think finally we're starting to see some progress, but imho I think Lety (maybe because of the coaching from Caro & Aldo) is much further along in the process.

I'm really looking forward to the developments within this next phase of LFMB. So far I've enjoyed the ride (even with all the ups and downs + filler)!

I've been FFing through a lot of Fea lately. I got behind after the Tucson shooting and couldn't spend two hours with pouty Lety and Dr. Phil. While the Aca scenes were visually beautiful the sound was horrendous. All that water and noise. Very distracting but at least I could skip through most of Aldo's endless platitudes.

Paula, Angelica was sick during the Acapulco scenes which may also have accounted how choppy some of the scenes were with the now you see it now you don't sling.

The best thing is the last month was that shot of Fern when he heard that Lety was coming back. What an expressive face he has, that look said it all. Up to that point I think he had convinced himself that he hated Lety after all the betrayals he suffered at her hand. First she drops that bomb at the junta then takes off, then Marcia tells him about the letters and gifts which would lead him to think that in a fit of vindictiveness Lety had told her. Julietta rips into him saying she knows everything so he again has to assume that Lety blabbed. So when Omar questions him if she really loved him he had to assume the answer was no. Nevertheless he is looking forward to her coming back which may be something he will come to regret.

As for Lety "I hate Fern" she is upset because he dragged her parents into it. Well what did she expect since Tomas and Julietta had repeatedly told her Fern was trying to get ahold of her and it was important. She really has no one to blame but herself and since she consistently blames everyone else for what happens to her it won't happen.

As for Dr. Phil and his thousand page book of pity sayings, I think he is an emotional scavenger. He saw a distressed Lety on the beach and when he could make a move he did so. In his way he is as big a coward as lety. When his much loved wife ran off he threw in the towel on his business and headed for the beach and a no strings life. He runs just like Lety always does. Interestingly enough i think he is being presented as a sort of anti Fern. Fern spent his entire life in futile pursuit of his parents, especially his father's, approval. He sacrificed everything to get it and it didn't work. Aldo on the other hand refused to knuckle under to his father, said the hell with you and business and set out to follow his own dreams.

I actually got a kick out of the Humberto Erasmo little chat. i like that Erasmo has enough pride and dignity that he considers himself and equal of any man and wasn't about to be intimidated. Obviously the two men have widely differing parenting skills. Erasmo will protect lety at all costs and Humberto will and did throw Fern under the bus at the fist opportunity.

Marica and dignity -Not in my book.

Deciegirl,
Thanks for expressing the way I also feel about Dr. Phil (Aldo). You're right, he is an emotional scavenger.
I too have FF thru his dialogue drivels.

Diann

Oh, I forgot to ask if anyone here is also watching Eva Luna? Reason I'm asking is because EL is recycling the same plot-line as LFMB:

1. Eva/Daniel fall in love.
Lety/Fern fall in love
2. Daniel does something to make Eva go away.
Fern does something to make Lety go away.
3. Eva misunderstands Daniel's intentions
Lety misunderstands Fern's intentions
4. Daniel goes back to 1st novia
Fern goes back to 1st novia
5. Eva comes back "transformed"
Lety comes back "transformed"

That's it so far on Eva Luna....
(Plus some additional side plots of course)

Diann

Great conversation, folks. I agree with Paula.. Fernando wants to change but he doesn't know how or where to begin so he keeps on making mistakes and going for the only shelter he has known so far, Marcia. He will pay for that. true.
In Lety's case, I agree that Aldo is being selfish and looks more like an emotional scavenger...
But I agree that Lety has had more help in her transformation and that is why she is ahead of Fernando in that 'road to travel'.

OAN... it was great to watch Jaime and Angelica interact last night on 'El Gran Show'... he kept saying ad lib humorous things and she kept loosing it laughing which in turn made him laugh.. and they kept it all in (did not edit any of it out)... as a matter of fact, he even introduced her as someone he had the privilege to share a tv project with and they greeted each other as Don Fernando and Lety... and she kept saying she was not great at physical tasks, just like Leticia Padilla Solis... too funny.
And also... Angelica is engaged!! I guess they wanted to make sure everyone knew that so their close/siblings/buddy interaction would not be misinterpreted by anyone. but it was a blast to watch them together and having fun like that.

btw, thanks so much for the picture of Fernando at hearing Lety will arrive today.. priceless indeed!...
Also liked how Marcia was reacting to the beauty pageant and Alicia noticing Marcia used to be right there with her focusing on the physical defects of all candidates... ITA that nothing better than getting beat by a FEA to revisit your ideas and concept of 'beauty' and self-worth.

Barb, ITA. Fern and Lety still have plenty of growing up to do, before they're ready for lifelong love. Especially Fern. If they got together now, bad news!

decie girl, your definition of Aldo as an emotional scavenger: CISE (precisely)! You nailed it!

GP, you said, "I hate that Fern's mistakes have to hurt so many others besides himself." But isn't life that way? All our choices affect those around us, whether loving or selfish choices. If I wear nice perfume, my officemates enjoy the fragrance. If I don't bathe, they suffer from the stink. Everyone is suffering from Fernando's stink.

Jenn, you said, "If only our trials were so well scripted and included exotic locales." Personally, I wish my trials included gorgeous galáns!

"Emotional scavenger" - I agree, it's perfect.

Ahh good analogy @ Paula H - everyone is suffering from Fern's stink! I get it! :)

@Marta - I also watched "El Gran Show" last night and thought it was fun to see the two of them together. After seeing that Angelica was engaged I did a little googling and apparently her fiance used to be a programming executive for Univision and he proposed to her for her birthday. I couldn't tell, but it seems that there might have been some scandal about the timing of her relationship with him - some of the gossip sites think he was still married to his ex wife (who has kids with him) when they started dating.

I'm mulling over this emotional scavenger idea - it just sounds so much harsher than what I think Aldo's intentions are...but I guess it could be an apt description of his and Lety's relationship. Only another hour before the show broadcasts here on the west coast.

I don't think "emotional scavenger" necessary refers to his intentions. It may be something he's doing instinctively.

i agree that it is not fully intentional on his part. It does look like it from an outside audience, but given the very long road to recovery from his wife's betrayal with his best friend, I dont blame him when he clings so hard to the first woman he has felt attracted to in over 2 yrs. By now, after his first real nasty experience, he knows what to look for and found it in lety, just a bit too late... and given his state of mind, I can't justify him but at least I can understand his reluctance to believe her heart is already 'taken'.

Exactly! I don't think he even realizes he's doing it.

Come to think of it, she may be closer to healing than he is, or at least she seems to be more aware of her healing process than he is of his. She's been trying to take things slowly with Aldo and develop a strong friendship, but he's euphoric and head-over heels. I think that euphoria is making him believe that he's completely healed, when he's only recently come out of hibernation.

Paula, I think it's awesome that you tweeted JC and he responded. Glad to know he cares about what his fans think.

Although I fast forward through a lot of the Conceptos scenes I quite enjoyed the conversations between Erasmo and Humberto. It's nice to see the characters trying to reason for a change instead of overreacting to everything.

Sorry about the late post, it was a busy weekend!

Note, I originally posted the following Sat. at 1:32 PM, but I have edited it and reposted.
