La Fea Más Bella #239-240 3/4/11 Fernie stole the cookbookie from the cookie jar? Who me? Yes you! Couldn't be! Then who?
Capitulo 239.

1. Luigi has a meltdown over this insult to all things holy. Fern and Omar listen as he calls the publisher and redirects the delivery to the middle of nowhere.
2. Fernando and Omar struggle for the chair, then they decide to "shoot" for it. We knew chess was over Omar’s head. Pinochle too. Today we discovered that chimchampu is beyond his mental faculties. Omar stares blankly at the rock and scissors, so Fern takes the chair. Fern would love to see Aldo embarrassed at the book launch sans books, but it’s part of Lety’s campaign to rescue Conceptos. He says, “I can’t do that to mi Lety.”
Omar dares to touch the bonsai.
3. At the book launch, Aldo is beside himself because the books haven’t arrived. The publisher says they were redirected, and Lety and Aldo assume that Fernando did it. Instead, Fern and Omar rescue the books. It’s a funny scene, though much of it is over my head. The driver calls Fern “blondie (huerito).” The driver, who is taller than Camil’s 6’3”, says that he’s from Oaxaca, whose people are very short. Fernando distracts them while Omar takes the books.
4. Just as Aldo is canceling the event, Fernando proudly arrives with the books he rescued for Lety’s sake. But instead of thanks, Lety snarls at him. Aldo privately asks Fern what he’s up to, diverting the books then playing the hero. Fern says he didn’t divert them, but he did rescue them so the event wouldn’t be ruined, and he did it for Lety.
5. Luigi throws a pity party because his plot failed. He looks for a new plot.
6. Ali is stuck at the office waiting for Marcia, and she wasn’t invited to the event. Tom offers to take her and she accepts. At the last minute, Marcia bounces into the room, mad at her brilliant secretary who never reserved a flight.
7. The “Oaxacan” driver arrives with the police, wanting to arrest Fern for stealing the books. Aldo tells Lety he’s sure Fern didn’t redirect the books. Lety would prefer to believe the worst of Fern. Omar asks Fern where he left Carloca, and Fern realizes he was supposed to pick her up. But Carla has just arrived on her own.

1. Marcia’s not real happy with Ali. Ali never reserved her flight, wasn’t going to wait, calls Tom a desgraciado but accepted his offer, and will return Marcia’s SUV with an empty tank. Worse yet, Ali hands her a tissue and says, “I think you’re about to be displaced again.”
2. Fern asks Luigi why he redirected the books. Luigi whines that he loves Aldo but Aldo loves the ugliest woman on earth. Fern glares at him and Luigi says, “Don’t tell me you’re in love with her too?” Fern yells at him, “Yes, I love her. What of it?” Luigi bawls, “How can this be? What has she got?” Fernando pantomimes Lety’s features.
3. Luigi says he will make the night a disaster because two super guapos dare love that “thing.” Fern laughs and says, “Did you really believe I love Lety? C’mon!” Fern tells Lui, “I’d love if you are rotten to Aldo, but leave Lety alone. She’s the president and this campaign must succeed.”
4. Anaís sees her old pal Carla and she gushes about the galán who was smitten with Lety in Acapulco. Fernando gets upset. When he hears Anaís likes Aca, he rushes off with an idea.
5. Aldo of Perpetual Universal Harmony is still livid, I guess because Fern rescued the books??
A: Fern drives me nuts. He’s selfish and insensitive (projection?) I can’t stand to see him near Lety.
Fausto: He still loves Lety.
A: Yes, but I’m not worried. He’s incapable of showing his love. Instead he goes around showing off “his new love,” throwing it in Lety’s face.
F: Maybe he’s trying to make Lety jealous?
A: Maybe, but I don’t think Lety would fall for his childish games again. (Nice try, Aldo, but it’s not a game, it’s true love, and you know it. No wonder you’re scared to see them together.)
6. Luigi asks if Lety will give the opening speech from the stage. At the word “speech” he smells fear and exploits it. He reminds her she’ll be in front of corporate heads and the international press.
7. I love this scene!
Fernando finds Lety, afraid to give the speech after what Luigi said. She doesn’t feel worthy because it’s not her company. Fern tells her that she’s president because she deserves it, and the facts back it up. She’s fixed problems and put this campaign together. She’s worked for this moment all her life. Now is the chance to enjoy her success, to show the world what she’s made of. Fern says, “I know you hate me, and you don’t believe what I say. So don’t believe in me. But believe in yourself. Show them the woman I fell in love with.” He kisses her hands, then he backs off, afraid he’s invaded her space. When he leaves, Lety gazes and sighs, “Don Fernando.”
8. Aldo heard all this. The look on his face says he knows he’s a goner. Lety tries to minimize it; she doesn’t believe anything from Fern. Aldo says he hates to admit it, but he’s seen another side of Fern and now he respects him much more. Lety dreamily says, “That’s the Fernando I fell in love with.” Aldo says, “I’ll keep fighting so you fall in love with me.”
9. Marcia and Alicia arrive and see Carla pawing Fern. Teresita tries to wedge between them, asking, “Where’s Marcia?” Fern hustles her away and explains to Carla that his mama doesn’t like any woman except Marcia.
10. Lety trips on her way to the stage, and Fern and Aldo dive to help her. Lety gives her little speech, then Fern competes with Aldo for attention.

Thank you, Pata, for the fun screenshots. My husband laughed out loud when he saw bug-eyed Marcia and Ali.
Sorry for the wonk alignment of the photos. Graphic placement on Blogger is an inexact science at best. I try for awhile to place them nicely, then I get frustrated and give up. In another admin matter, you know I try to keep most recaps under 20 lines. For the next week, that just ain't gonna' happen. I expect to return to shorter summaries when things calm down.
When Anaís tells Carla about the galán smitten with Lety in Aca, why does Fern act stunned as if this is news to him? I think it’s a leftover from the Colombian. In BLF Michel hadn’t shown up yet, and this scene is the first Armando heard that Betty had a suitor while she was away. Also I think Fern was going to try to set up Anaís with Aldo, but we never saw that scene. Actually it would make more sense to sic Carloca on him. Carla loves Acapulco too, Fern would be free of Carla at the same time Lety was free of Aldo, and we all know Carla can be quite persistent when she sets her sights on a man!
Barbara, back in summary 167/168 (Doomsday - thanks, whoever coined that name), you predicted the following. "He does love Lety, but I think he'll end up loving her more because he doesn't have her right now. If Lety had stayed, Fernando would have taken advantage of her and she would've been able to resist for only so long. Right now distance between the two is the very best thing to ensure a possible future with each other."
I think we are seeing the results of exactly what you predicted.
Has Fernando, even at his worst, ever resorted to underhanded dirty tricks against opponents? Even against Ariel? NO! He would yell, bluster, and strong-arm people. He would hide his dishonest methods. But dirty tricks to humiliate an opponent? No, that’s just not his style. And yet, when something bad happens, Lety immediately assumes Fernando did it.

Fernando and Omar are so funny together. I loved the "rock scissor" scene. I also was cracking up when they went to retrieve the books. I also enjoyed the Fernando/Lety pep talk scene. I think today was a big step forward for Fern. Thanks Paula.

Aldo told Fausto, “ I’m not worried. [Fernando’s] incapable of showing his love.” Aldo feels smugly safe, knowing Fernando can't overcome that obstacle. But then, 15 minutes later, Aldo witnesses as Fernando demonstrates his love, loud and clear, as he's encouraging Lety to make the speech. Aldo, you're toast, and you know it!
After Fernando leaves, Lety tells Aldo, “That’s the Fernando I fell in love with.” Aldo said it’s okay since Lety used past tense. Nice try, Tutz! Next you'll claim she had her fingers crossed!

Why oh why did Fernando deny his love for Lety to Luigi?
On the old recaps, the leading theory was that Fern didn't want Luigi to take out his anger on Lety. That explanation doesn't work for me, because it's established that Luigi's already a brat with a mean streak, and he's never been especially good to Lety. If he did try to quit out of spite, someone could ask him how he'd feel if people found out that he was quitting because he lost a guapo to a fea. He'd probably be too embarrassed to follow through!
It's one thing for Fernando not to be ready to publicly declare his love for Lety. But it's another thing to deny it outright. It's like handing Aldo just the weapon he needs.

I was extremely upset with Lety and Aldo when they jumped to the conclusion that Fernando had misdirected the cookbooks. There's no previous evidence that Fernando has ever been mean-spirited. Lety has always accused him of putting Conceptos first, therefore, her theory that Fernando was the culprit doesn't hold water. Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned and there's no scorn like Lety's. Let me just tell you that I think she owes Fernando an apology. Aldo does too, but it would be too much to expect him to do anything so humbling. To show how much Fernando has grown, even after Lety dissed him over the cookbooks, he still put her first by encouraging her to make the speech. He could've said that Lety was on her own (made her bed, now lie in it) but his love for Lety is great enough to overcome her extraordinarily bad manners and lend her a helping hand. Aldo just gets pissed and withholds his affection and support when he's upset with Lety. So, ladies, who's the bigger man? I don't think there's a question that it is Fernando.

I haven't seen all of the second episode yet but what I saw was full of wonderful moments. My favorite was the Lucy & Ethel style antics of Fernando & Omar trying to rescue the books. They were hilarious!
I also loved Marcia's return & her scenes with Alicia. Then there was the rock, paper scissors scene, the Aldo & Fernando scene in the hallway -- they are also very good together.
I missed the makeovers yesterday due to President Calderon -- but whoever described them yesterday was so right. Mostly hideous.
I love this show! (And I still like Aldo -- who could have fed Lety's suspicions today but stood up for Fernando instead.)

B. Look at the timeline. Fernando yells "Yes I love her!" No hesitation, no shades of gray. Then Lui says he will make the night a disaster because two super guapos love Lety. So Fern makes Lui think he doesn't love Lety. In his Fernando brain, Lui will make a disaster because two guapos love Lety. If Lui does not think two guapos love Lety, then he won't make a disaster, right?
C. Julie, your justification makes perfect sense (Lui torments Lety anyway), but the problem is, Fern is no deep thinker, and as we've seen, he NEVER thinks out the full ramifications. Remember the prime directive? Lety must not suffer. As soon as his brain latches on to a solution that will stop Lety's immediate suffering, he runs with it and doesn’t consider tomorrow.
The prime directive takes precedence over everything, including declaring his love.

I will cut Aldo a little slack on blaming Fernando for redirecting the books. He hasn't known Fern for long, so if Lety is sure that Fern did it, Aldo figures she knows what she's talking about. And when Aldo sees evidence of Fern's innocence, Aldo believes him. OTOH, Lety should know Fern is not mean spirited. But when anything bad happens, her kneejerk reaction is to blame Fern.
Maybe Lety has fallen into her own trap. Carla told Fern that if he wanted to stop loving Lety, he should think of her faults. Lety has been doing that without any help from Carla. She's desperate to get him out of her heart, so she fixates on his fault, and if she can't find enough, she invents some. I enjoyed today's caps. the person who came up with the dicho (saying) "hell hath no fury like a woman scorned" obviously hasn't felt the wrath of a flamboyant gay man in love. Wow - Luigi is like a gremlin who ate after midnight. That said - his little stunts got us some great comedy with Fern, Omar and Aldo today. I even liked the scene in the hallway with Fern and Lety.
Here's why I think Lety easily believes that Fern would have switched the routing of the books - look at all the stupid stunts he pulled prior to his trip to NYC and even afterwards. Even though they seemed harmless to us - Lety felt he was being manipulative and trying to harm Aldo. They tried to set Aldo up on that stupid business lunch, Omar tried to separate Lety from Aldo by sending him on the wild goose chase with no contract - so she has plenty of reason to think they might escalate to try to embarass him on his big night. Especially after Fern's behavior in the meeting earlier that day about how the book should be presented.
I really thought Fern made the biggest step forward to date by putting aside his own wish to see Aldo fail, by rescuing the books. That was really big of him and I was proud of him in those moments. I also really liked the fact that he went to go deal with Luigi and although I sort of understand why he would eventually deny his love for Lety and I saw your arguments Paula - I honestly think he could have neutralized Luigi in another way besides denying his love for Lety. I also really loved his pep talk to Lety. Really good stuff in that scene. I think I fell in love with Fern in that moment! :)
I was also proud of Aldo today for telling the truth to Lety on two occasions - once when he realized that Fern had NOT re-routed the books and the other right after Lety's conversation with Fern (telling her he respected Fern a lot more). Paula - you said that Aldo says “My love is so great, if I knew Fern would make her happy I would step aside immediately.” Here's what I think - he doesn't think that Fern would make her happy - YET. So I say let's give him time...I also think that the writing and direction for this character is really what makes him seem so shady to some here on the board.
Someone on the other board said that Lety still has only heard sweet words from Fern about his love for her, but has not seen any strong actions as proof of it. So far he's tried to cause trouble in and break up her growing relationship with Aldo, maintained his relationship with Marcia and tried to make her jealous by bringing Carla into the picture . I agree that this is probably the lens with which Lety sees things and from her perspective it probably seems true. I believe today with Fern rescuing the books was one of the first real unselfish actions I've seen him make towards gaining her love. The conversation with Luigi was the 2nd step. Lety couldn't see these things, but I think that eventually she will as he makes more of them. I think one major action that has to happen soon (hopefully by the end of this expo) is for him to break up with Marcia.
Someone else said that they felt Fern and Aldo have more chemistry than Lety and Aldo. I totally agree - although I think that the chemistry has been much better in these later caps. between A & L.
Here's why I think Lety easily believes that Fern would have switched the routing of the books - look at all the stupid stunts he pulled prior to his trip to NYC and even afterwards. Even though they seemed harmless to us - Lety felt he was being manipulative and trying to harm Aldo. They tried to set Aldo up on that stupid business lunch, Omar tried to separate Lety from Aldo by sending him on the wild goose chase with no contract - so she has plenty of reason to think they might escalate to try to embarass him on his big night. Especially after Fern's behavior in the meeting earlier that day about how the book should be presented.
I really thought Fern made the biggest step forward to date by putting aside his own wish to see Aldo fail, by rescuing the books. That was really big of him and I was proud of him in those moments. GP, yes. When Fernando rescued the books to help Lety instead of harming Aldo, that was a HUGE step. In fact, I'm certain it was his very first act of unselfish love. He has stepped up to a whole new level.

Yes- Paula I'm late to the Fern love party. :) I've always appreciated his attractiveness and I even liked him, but I really couldn't love his character until he finally showed that he was worthy of the love. Yesterday I finally saw proof that he's becoming worthy. I think I'm also late to the party because when I started watching LFMB & truly understanding the storyline it was right around the time Lety found the letter. I think I truly started watching/paying attention in earnest around the trip to Germany. My project to catch up via the dvd's is slow going and so far I'm only up to cap. 31 so I have a LOOOONG way to go & I think I missed a lot of the stuff that might have made me fall in love with him early on (which now that I know some of the crap he's pulled in the latter eps will probably affect the way I see things in those earlier eps). I found Fern to be a guapo, but selfish cad!
For me - Fern admitting that he loved Lety to Luigi was negated by him then taking it back (even if it might have been to protect Lety). I say it's neither a step forward or backwards for Fern. He's admitted it before (although grudgingly) to characters that are more important than Luigi. If he tells Humberto & Teresita (thought she already knows but won't admit it) then I say it's a HUGE step forward.

Good grief what were they thinking to dress Aldo like an ice cream vendor. That all white, complete to the shoes, look does nothing for him. In any event Aldo and Lety annoyed the heck out of me with the instant assumption that Fern was guilty of booknapping. As has been pointed out he has never done anything to warrant that. Lety can not let go of her hate and her constant casting of Fern in a bad light makes me question how sincere her eternal love really is.
Aldo waffles on respecting or hating Fern so nothing he does surprises me. In many ways if Fern hadn't heard the conversation about the books it would have been payback to Aldo for the way he continues to lead Luigi on.

Two hours pretty much dragged except for the book rescue and that fantastic Lety/Fern pep talk. Those made it ll worthwhile

Julie- I find the jumping back and forth more frustrating than confusing. It's mainly because I see where the Lety character started out and it's cringe inducing for me & a bit painful for me to watch her struggle with her social awkwardness/sheltered upbringing. Plus her character just didn't seem to have much common sense back then (although there are times when she doesn't have it now!) It is rather enlightening to see some of the earlier eps to catch up on why people react the way they do. The catching up process has been slow going for me just because of the fact that things have been insanely busy & watching them makes me a little frustrated!

I wonder if Lety and Fern were to decide to get together in those moments right after the pep-talk would that relationship survive? It might... LOL - Paula - I think I know where you're going...I'll wait and see on the regressing point (I don't necessarily think it's all Aldo's fault). In fact I'd say it's the people like Luigi who insist of taking pot shots at Lety's self esteem. But it could be our dear Aldo as well - I just haven't seen much evidence to support that yet.
Paula, the scene you love with Fern and Lety was almost word for word from YSBLF EXCEPT when he says 'the woman I fell in love with'... Armando does not dare go that far... he has to play the 'supportive friend' and restrains himself from taking it to the more intimate extreme of it sounding more like 'I love you'.
