You gonna' watch Alborada? You wanna' have a board?
Alborada was the novela that launched the Caray board*, in fact “Caray! Caray!” was taken from a favorite phrase of one of the characters. Board Mom Melinama wrote most of the recaps. For many, it’s their favorite novela. It ran in the US in 2006, so most on Caray have never seen it.
So, are you in? If enough people plan to watch, I would be willing to host a rerun board. It would have a daily link to the old recap, and we could come together and discuss it afresh. I just need to know how many people expect to watch and post comments on the board (lurking doesn’t count), so I know whether it’s worthwhile to create a board. Are you in?
*Alb. was actually recapped on the Board Mom’s other blog, Pratie Place, but it’s considered the TN that launched Caray. I’m a little fuzzy on the details.

And Variopinta, I love, love, LOVE your avatar. That alone will make me eager for your posts!
Barbara, you'd keep up via on-line caps? What a trooper! Alexis, we never got to hear enough from you on the Fea board; maybe this time 'round, we'll get to know you better.
Of course, this is all assuming that there is enough interest to roll out a board.

Do I drop TdA and watch Alborada instead?
TdA is fun to mock but is nowhere close to the quality of Alborada.
I watched India on Telefutura. The CCs were awesome and they even offered CCs in English. I'm watching la Pola... the same.
I was not aware of CCs while watching Alborada so I rewound frequently to be sure I understood.
It'd be a treat to watch again... this time with CCs... and probably good ones at that... imagine.
Although I did get to discuss Alborada once a week with my Profa it would be a delight to participate in daily discussion here, especially with my old friends Paula and Susanlynn... imagine.
I'd get an hour back to devote to my reading (which Univision snatched away by the 2 hr. episodes.)
Thing is, TdA is fun...
Hmmmm...
Carlos
Carlos, it would be a blast to have you on board. Y'know, I learned from FELS, that if a TN is bad enough, you can comment on the blog without even watching the caps. I did it for FELS all the time! But that system only works if the show is really bad. Sounds like TDA qualifies.
Susanlynn, the only time I visited Mexico was in '08. We arrived in Cd Puebla at about 9 PM, put our bags in the room, and went down to the hotel restaurant for a cup of coffee. Soon we heard noise on the street. Out there, mariachis were serenading someone on the third floor, so we got to enjoy the serenade as well, with our coffee. What a wonderful welcome to Puebla!
Susanlynn, it will be fun to comment with you again, it's been way too long. I hope the rest of you join in as well. The acting and historical aspects of Alborada are top notch.
Susanlynn, I'm a real sucker for mariachis. The Lovely Linda had mariachis serenade me at my 60th and 65th birthday parties. Tears both times. How nifty for you and Señor Hub and congratulations on your anniversary.
"The young Mexican kids working there asked us the secret to staying married . They asked in Spanish , and I understood them !!!!! "
I always suspected that you've been holding out on us.
Paula... OK... count me in. I think that my only reservation is that here at Caray Caray, Alborada is almost considered sacred. Will be able to mock? Was it really as good as we remember?
It's too bad everyone here doesn't have access to Telefutura. Even though it's part of the Univision family, there certainly seems to be quite a contrast.
Carlos
Carlos, it's OK to mock. As I recall Melinama did her fair share of mocking in her recaps. Alborada tries to be historically accurate and I will tell you right now that somebody on the staff had quite an interest in bathroom habits of the day. No spoilers now, you'll have to watch. But definitely good for the snark.
I love mariachis too. None of my friends understand it. Luckily I live in an area with some really good mariachi bands.
As I mentioned earlier, I did watch Alborada first time around and because I wasn't aware of CCs, I rewound a lot to be sure that I caught the conversations.
I also rewound a lot to make sure I caught Perla. I wonder if she really looks as good as I remember?
Carlos
One more mariachi story. Last Saturday I went into town. Driving down the main street, I heard brilliant trumpet sounds coming out of a dumpy taqueria. I quickly parked and ordered a couple of tacos. A 4-man mariachi group, looking a bit tattered, was playing in this little greasy cuchara. A guy sitting at a corner table, spending his afternoon con muchas cervezas, requested one song after another. The waitress told me that typically, mariachis expect $15 per request. That guy must've rung up a heckuva tab!
I don't know where Ferro is these days. Julie doesn't get Telefutura, so she sends regrets. I think JudyB has retired from watching novelas - life kept getting in the way.
Carlos, will Perla look as good as you remember? Well, memories can grow prettier over time. OTOH, if your vision is degrading, you're less likely to notice imperfections this time 'round!
I look forward to losing myself in a "novela de epoca" with Fernando C.
Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlan played here last year and you bet I went! It was very moving to hear the audience singing "Mexico Lindo" along with the band.
Of course, it wasn't as romantic as having a serenade outside my window, but I was happy. ;)
Marley is a sad pirate panda.
I AM SO IN!!!!!!!!
Mad Marley, how terrible that you don't get Telefutura. I like your avatar.
Paula, $15 per mariachi request in a dumpy taqueria? That seems expensive to me, however I am not up on mariachi etiquette to tell you the truth. I usually enjoy this type of music at festivals or performances so no tipping required.
(And I'm thrilled you're on board with the A Crew!)
I had a crush on Tia Isabel, though I didn't really need to see her with her chamberpot. I preferred watching her smoke her little cigars and grumble, "¡Caray, caray!"
Carlos
I have Alborada on DVD, too. It's 4 discs, two sides ea. Even then, I know a lot was cut. I'm dying to know what (probably nothing with TBLMOE got cut).
BTW, Lucero is just learning how to do the hiccup crying she exudes in MEPS and excels in STuD.

I'll post a synopsis and a characters list later this week. The show starts next Tuesday. Any questions?
Susanlynn, can you please e-mail me at paulah88@hotmail.com ? I have a few questions about the character list. Thanks!
So lets rock on!! and thanks Paula for hosting.
i too hold a very dear place in my heart for my first few novelas... but i was a kid... Gustavo Rojo and Ofelia Cano in Natacha and Lupita Ferrer and Jose Bardina in Esmeralda and in La Zulianita...
when does it actually start?
for those who have not seen it, dont miss the beginning... very action packed...
Also, it was the first novela I saw with Daniela Romo - she is fantastic as Doña Juana and the dynamic between her and Modesta is great!
Anyone else here buy the color drawings/paintings from various Alborada scenes from our Blog Mom besides me? Love them! That's how I found CarayCaray!
Melissa
after Alborada he did El Pantera, a popular series from Televisa
I don't know if we have a headset that plugs into the TV.
Part of what changed my mind about participating in Alborada was seeing that this non-recap has already attracted 41 comments - and mostly from people I recognize! Yowza. Paula, it's like you're getting the band back together or something! Between that and the reputation of Alborada, I don't think I can afford to miss out!

except for a bilingual warning about meat... lol
now browsing that menuy makes me hungry... when I was a kid it used to be a garage and the kitchen waw the small room behind it. recently when I went they had taken over the whole hosue, remodeling it for more dining space etc... but with still the same homecooking style...
But, as someone else said, La Reina del Sur (fabulous novela) is ending soon, so I'm probably up for another sight of Colunga, bandana in place on his head, leaning against the shrouds of his pirate ship.
It will help you understand the action taking place so you can concentrate on the dialog--and it won't spoil the whole novela to know what's going on just before seeing it.

The Sennheiser headphones were a suggestion from my friend Eva who also gave me her Alborada DVD. They used he headphones for her father-in-law who was hard of hearing. Spared the rest of the family from having to hear a blaring TV all the time.
I expect I'll wander by for the recaps, at least. Or does Telefutura have somewhere to watch online maybe, the way some channels do now?
Getting the band back together... That's exactly what it sounds like. Guess I'll have to be a roadie.
For anybody on the fence about it, I say give it a try. I was pulled in after the first five minutes. It moves fast, is extremely well-written and has gratifyingly few loose ends when it's over. The only thing that bothered me was that the costumes seemed a bit "nylon & cheap lace", but I quickly got over that. I've been out of town without a telly all week, so now I'm wondering if I really want to jump back into the estupidez of TdA.
Pls tell me about the Alborada drawings, I'm interested in anything FC.
PaulaH,
Here's looking at you kid, hard to choose the best FC picture.
The Alborado DVD seems pretty good, has continuity, unlike the butchered Amor Real. Can't wait to see the entire TN. Can't get enough of FC, excluding Mejia mierda.
I'll have to get all of them out from a box (we moved not too long ago), but I had framed the one of Doña Juana taking a sip of tea with Modesta looking at her from behind. It was a classic scene and the drawing captured their expressions perfectly! It is my favorite of all the drawings.
OMG, is it May 31st yet? I can't wait for this to start!
Even though I don't usually watch Dancing With the Stars I managed to catch a few episodes. Glad to see Hines won, he was excellent and charismatic.
By the way, you are a teacher are you not? Are you out for the summer yet? My sis teaches high school French and emails me her countdown every day. Today...7 days to go until summer vacation. (She loves teaching but she also loves her summer vacations.)
I have been so busy lately with photo things and the Monday slot for Cuando Me Enamoro that i haven't responded. I will try to watch Alborada again since it is my all time favorite telenovela. I would chime into a board from time to time but I hope it isn't too much work for you. It would be fun to connect on this fabulous tale though. Thanks for your generous offer!
And now reading all the 71 responses before me I realize I will have to join in, I couldn't resist an opportunity to reconnect with so many old and new friends. A special "que pasa, chica" to Susanlynn, a CarayCaray goddess!
Go Paula Go.
I plan to post the synopsis and characters Monday.
Less than a week to go!
1. Is there any preferred abbreviation for "Alborada"? I have no intention of writing it out every time, and initials won't work like they do for CME, TDA, etc. "A" doesn't work. Alb? Albo? Alba?
2. Is there anything that stands out about the setting? For Pasion we called ourselves by pirate names (Mad Polly Flint), and for FELS it was pastries (Paula Polvorones). Any suggestions?
I know! Potty names! I call dibbs on "Lu"! Or maybe not, huh?
Can we be dons and donas, viscounts, marqueses, counts, licenciados, padres (both kinds), sisters (both kinds) and pu**as (there are alot of those, too).
I dipped into Melinama's original recap to get a head start on the full-bodied FC. My, my we have certainly come a long way in our recapping skills. I'm sure our Head Mamma had no idea what she was birthing when she recapped Alborada.
As for the abbreviation of the title of the novela--ALBO is about as short as it can get and still be meaningful. I like ALBA better, which actually means dawn (and also the white vestments of a priest, according to my old dictionary).
NOK--Aka maybe Count-me-In?
Potty names, LOL!!! That would be a standout theme all right. The Spanish Inquisition was also taking place I think, with Mexico fighting for independence throughout. And, as NOK says, all those status-oriented titles and names. Since there are a couple of pirates in this one I guess I could technically keep my current handle, especially since the pirate is a she.
Paula, I don't think there is a respectable way to shorten the name. Anyway, it's such a beautiful name in its entirety.
OTOH, Telemundo is a network based in Miami, and they produce their own TNs.
You will almost never see a Univision actor in a Telemundo TN or vice versa because Televisa in Mexico (who produces most of Uni's content) is very strict about not letting their stable of contracted actors work for the competition.
As for the deep psychoanalysis, I don't think we'll be doing much of that. Alborada just doesn't have that kind of depth like Fea did.
Hmmm. I just typed that word three times in just one post.
So then why am I on the fence? Well, I've been watching "Cuando Me Enamoro," and I don't want to continue to watch two telenovelas. However, the more I watch "Cuando," the more convinced I am that I'll be happier switching to "Alborada." In spite of Silvia Navarro, "Cuando Me Enamoro" is just not doing it for me. "La Reina del Sur" has made it more difficult for me to put up with the overacting, cliched dialogue and situations, and general estupidez that I used to be able to tolerate, even enjoy.
All of this is just a long-winded way to say that yes, count me in for "Alborada."
I can't promise not to be as long-winded as I am on CME and TDA, but it will be thoughtful and reflective (haha).
NOK
Looking forward to seeing you all on Tuesday!
