You gonna' watch Alborada? You wanna' have a board?

Do you long for the “good old days” of telenovelas when Colunga was young, the time period was old, and novelas ran for less than 100 episodes? Well, here’s your chance! Alborada starts next Tuesday, 10 PM, on Telefutura, and it has it all! I might host a rerun board for it, but I want to know if there is enough interest.

  • Fernando Colunga, TBLMOE, is in his prime. I know, it was only six years ago; but to me he looked younger. The “sweet young thing” is Lucero, probably sweeter and younger than you’re used to.
  • It’s set in the early 1800’s, so if you’ve never seen a period novela, you’re in for a treat.
  • Produced by Carla Estrada, it’s a good, tight 90 episodes. If you’re accustomed to current novelas stretched to the breaking point with filler, you deserve a novela with good, quick plot progress.

Alborada was the novela that launched the Caray board*, in fact “Caray! Caray!” was taken from a favorite phrase of one of the characters. Board Mom Melinama wrote most of the recaps. For many, it’s their favorite novela. It ran in the US in 2006, so most on Caray have never seen it.

So, are you in? If enough people plan to watch, I would be willing to host a rerun board. It would have a daily link to the old recap, and we could come together and discuss it afresh. I just need to know how many people expect to watch and post comments on the board (lurking doesn’t count), so I know whether it’s worthwhile to create a board. Are you in?

*Alb. was actually recapped on the Board Mom’s other blog, Pratie Place, but it’s considered the TN that launched Caray. I’m a little fuzzy on the details.

    Comments:
I've been thinking about it, but since my DVR has only two tuners that means having to watch Telemundo's 10PM program on their website the next day.

It would be great to get away from the TDA dreck, & watch sth really good. I have seen it on DVD. I've been missing el guapisimo, FC.

If only I had Telefutura, I would be there. Alas! Or should I say, caray!
    La Paloma

I don't think I have Telefutura in Richmond. I have Univision and Telemundo, but I'll read the board and comment. I might be able to catch episodes on-line so I can stay up with it. I actually miss conversing on the board with everyone.

I watched some of it the first time around, but didn't catch its whole run. I've been wanting to see it for a while, and have considered even buying it, so this is actually saving me money for the moment. So, I'll be watching.

I am SOOOOOO in !!!!! Alborada is my favorite novela. [I also love Amor Real....it's a tie.] I guess that one never forgets one's first telenovela in the same way that one never forgets one's first love. I would love to be able to read your recaps and be able to comment. I happened on Alborada while channel surfing. I took one look at tall, dark, handsome, bearded , booted Luis and knew that I'd have to get involved. My dad had just passed away after a two-year illness, and I needed a diversion from my grief. Alborada and TBLMOE was just what I needed. I arrived in about the middle just as Esperanza lay dying. I didn't understand much Spanish and mistakenly thought that Espy was Luis's mother and Hippolita was his wife. Who knew !!!! I found Melinama's site, and I was able to understand what was going on and magic and my healing began. Since I had missed the first half, Hub bought me the dvds so that I was able to watch from the beginning. I'm looking forward to reliving this wonderful love story. Thanks !!!

Great, Susanlynn! I look forward to the Alb-veteran perspective you can bring in. When I hosted the Fea rerun board, I brought in all sorts of background info because I was so nuts for the show. But with Alb, I only ever saw the condensed version, so I won't be much help. I suspect you'll have plenty of valuable insights for us.

And Variopinta, I love, love, LOVE your avatar. That alone will make me eager for your posts!

Barbara, you'd keep up via on-line caps? What a trooper! Alexis, we never got to hear enough from you on the Fea board; maybe this time 'round, we'll get to know you better.

Of course, this is all assuming that there is enough interest to roll out a board.

I'm in since i receive Telefutura and am not watching TDA. I own the dvd but haven't watched the shortened version as yet. I think 90 episodes of 1 hour segments at 10 pm is perfect. Though I like LFMB, it was just too much to watch for so long with things going on during the day but this I can handle. Thanks and hope we can get enough on board.

    GinCA

I don't have Telefutura either! :( Sounds like a good one to follow - if we ever pick this channel up before hand I'll join.

My grandmother told me that this novela is a MUST SEE! I am definitely interested in watching. When will it start, what channel and what time slot?

Oh my, I loved Alborada but didn't get to know Melinama or even learn that there were such things as recaps until later during Heridas de Amor and of course have been a regular commenter and part-time recapper ever since. So now I'm faced with a real dilemma:

Do I drop TdA and watch Alborada instead?

TdA is fun to mock but is nowhere close to the quality of Alborada.

I watched India on Telefutura. The CCs were awesome and they even offered CCs in English. I'm watching la Pola... the same.

I was not aware of CCs while watching Alborada so I rewound frequently to be sure I understood.
It'd be a treat to watch again... this time with CCs... and probably good ones at that... imagine.

Although I did get to discuss Alborada once a week with my Profa it would be a delight to participate in daily discussion here, especially with my old friends Paula and Susanlynn... imagine.

I'd get an hour back to devote to my reading (which Univision snatched away by the 2 hr. episodes.)

    Thing is, TdA is fun...

    Hmmmm...

    Carlos

Carlos~~~I hope that you decide to join us in Alboradaville. I love that novela. It would be such fun chatting about it with you. Two of my telenovios are in it...TBLMOE AND Marcelo Cordoba. By the way, I must share something . Hub and I just got back from Disney World. They gave us buttons to show that we were celebrating our anniversary, so we got a lot of good wishes and a few nice surprises. The best was a serenade by our favorite mariachis [Mariachi Cobre] who have been entertaining at the Mexico pavilion in Epcot for years. One of the guitar players struck up a conversation with Hub when we were there 6 years ago because Hub was wearing a Penn State cap. The serenade made me feel like I was in a telenovela !!! The young Mexican kids working there asked us the secret to staying married . They asked in Spanish , and I understood them !!!!! [Carlos~~~We also met a lovely young man from Dallas who was our waiter one night.]

GinCA, welcome! GP, we'll miss you!! Tierra, your answers are all in the first paragraph of the post.

Carlos, it would be a blast to have you on board. Y'know, I learned from FELS, that if a TN is bad enough, you can comment on the blog without even watching the caps. I did it for FELS all the time! But that system only works if the show is really bad. Sounds like TDA qualifies.

Susanlynn, the only time I visited Mexico was in '08. We arrived in Cd Puebla at about 9 PM, put our bags in the room, and went down to the hotel restaurant for a cup of coffee. Soon we heard noise on the street. Out there, mariachis were serenading someone on the third floor, so we got to enjoy the serenade as well, with our coffee. What a wonderful welcome to Puebla!

Oh heck yeah you know I am in. Alborada is the show that got me hooked on telenovelas. A woman at work knew I wanted to learn Spanish and she recommended it to me. I watched from the first episode but didn't discover Melinama's blog until some time into it, can't remember when exactly. Alborada is slam bang excitement right out the chute from the first episode. No boring old setting the stage for Carla Estrada.

Susanlynn, it will be fun to comment with you again, it's been way too long. I hope the rest of you join in as well. The acting and historical aspects of Alborada are top notch.

    Thanks Susanlynn and Paula.

Susanlynn, I'm a real sucker for mariachis. The Lovely Linda had mariachis serenade me at my 60th and 65th birthday parties. Tears both times. How nifty for you and Señor Hub and congratulations on your anniversary.

"The young Mexican kids working there asked us the secret to staying married . They asked in Spanish , and I understood them !!!!! "

I always suspected that you've been holding out on us.

Paula... OK... count me in. I think that my only reservation is that here at Caray Caray, Alborada is almost considered sacred. Will be able to mock? Was it really as good as we remember?

It's too bad everyone here doesn't have access to Telefutura. Even though it's part of the Univision family, there certainly seems to be quite a contrast.

    Carlos

    Sylvia too? Neato.

    Carlos

Paula~~~Don't you just love mariachis ? Hub and I always try to catch them a couple times whenever we are at Epcot. Hub does not understand a word of Spanish, but he loves to listen to the mariachis play. The song that they sang to us was ''Si nos Dejan.'' Bob, one of the guitar players and Hub's bud, wrote the title down for me and said that I might find the lyrics at Elmariachi, com. AHOY, Captain Sylvia !!! Welcome aboard. It will be fantastic to sail with you again. Carlos~~~Alborada is sacred, but feel free to mock. What fun would it be if we couldn't be a little irreverant ? It's our trademark here at caraycaray , verdad ? As for my Spanish skills, I still only understand some words that pop out at me. I am often still completely clueless. I wonder where Ferro , Julie, and Judyb are. It would be great if they could join us.

Carlos~~~I am thinking that you will be a big Perla fan. [ She's Luis's mistress].

Oh yes, Carlos will love Perla. She's such a naughty girl!

Carlos, it's OK to mock. As I recall Melinama did her fair share of mocking in her recaps. Alborada tries to be historically accurate and I will tell you right now that somebody on the staff had quite an interest in bathroom habits of the day. No spoilers now, you'll have to watch. But definitely good for the snark.

I love mariachis too. None of my friends understand it. Luckily I live in an area with some really good mariachi bands.

    Susanlynn and Sylvia,

As I mentioned earlier, I did watch Alborada first time around and because I wasn't aware of CCs, I rewound a lot to be sure that I caught the conversations.

I also rewound a lot to make sure I caught Perla. I wonder if she really looks as good as I remember?

    Carlos

Carlos, oops, I missed that you had seen it. And yes, Perla is stunningly beautiful. I didn't know about closed caps until partway through, not that I would have understood them anyway. The original didn't have caps in English, I wonder if this new version will?

Susanlynn, these days I'm watching "La hija del mariachi" on disk (complete), and "Si nos dejan" is the theme song. It's been running around in my mind all day!

One more mariachi story. Last Saturday I went into town. Driving down the main street, I heard brilliant trumpet sounds coming out of a dumpy taqueria. I quickly parked and ordered a couple of tacos. A 4-man mariachi group, looking a bit tattered, was playing in this little greasy cuchara. A guy sitting at a corner table, spending his afternoon con muchas cervezas, requested one song after another. The waitress told me that typically, mariachis expect $15 per request. That guy must've rung up a heckuva tab!

I don't know where Ferro is these days. Julie doesn't get Telefutura, so she sends regrets. I think JudyB has retired from watching novelas - life kept getting in the way.

Carlos, will Perla look as good as you remember? Well, memories can grow prettier over time. OTOH, if your vision is degrading, you're less likely to notice imperfections this time 'round!

I've never seen it, but given all the glowing recommendations, how could I not watch?
I look forward to losing myself in a "novela de epoca" with Fernando C.

Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlan played here last year and you bet I went! It was very moving to hear the audience singing "Mexico Lindo" along with the band.
Of course, it wasn't as romantic as having a serenade outside my window, but I was happy. ;)

I'd be all over this if I had Telefutura - Alborada was what got me (back) into telenovelas, and I only saw the last half the first time around. We don't seem to get Telefutura or Telemundo here, though - I even went through the Latin package channels one time to see if it was available in the area and we just weren't on the right tier, and no such luck.

Marley is a sad pirate panda.

For some reason I thought you said "Telemundo" and I was like bummer, but TELEFUTURA?!?? Yeah I think I get that!!!

    I AM SO IN!!!!!!!!

I've already set my DVR timer!!! SQUEEEE!

Goodie! Sounds like we've got quite few folk that are interested.

Mad Marley, how terrible that you don't get Telefutura. I like your avatar.

Paula, $15 per mariachi request in a dumpy taqueria? That seems expensive to me, however I am not up on mariachi etiquette to tell you the truth. I usually enjoy this type of music at festivals or performances so no tipping required.

I have the complete Alborada on DVD (Eve in Cleveland sent it to me a couple of years ago) but I've never watched it. You've motivated me now though. I can share the experience with you all and who cares if I don't have closed captions!? With my earphones I'll be okay. It's amazing how much more I understand (in English too) with those. Count me in A crew!

Judy, have I ever thanked you for your tip about using earphones? I think I have pretty good hearing but I understand so much more with the earphones. Gracias amiga!

(And I'm thrilled you're on board with the A Crew!)

Dr. Judy, what good news. I was afraid that you wouldn't be joining us since you don't get Telefutura. I'm so glad that you're on board.

I had a crush on Tia Isabel, though I didn't really need to see her with her chamberpot. I preferred watching her smoke her little cigars and grumble, "¡Caray, caray!"

    Carlos

    Count me in for discussions.

I have Alborada on DVD, too. It's 4 discs, two sides ea. Even then, I know a lot was cut. I'm dying to know what (probably nothing with TBLMOE got cut).

BTW, Lucero is just learning how to do the hiccup crying she exudes in MEPS and excels in STuD.
    NOK

Okay, it looks like there is enough interest to start a board. Fantastic! I look forward to sharing a community with old friends again, and I look forward to getting to know some new folks.

I'll post a synopsis and a characters list later this week. The show starts next Tuesday. Any questions?

Susanlynn, can you please e-mail me at paulah88@hotmail.com ? I have a few questions about the character list. Thanks!

can't wait, you guys are all so much fun to discuss novelas with... and the timing is perfect, since reina del sur ends on monday.
So lets rock on!! and thanks Paula for hosting.
i too hold a very dear place in my heart for my first few novelas... but i was a kid... Gustavo Rojo and Ofelia Cano in Natacha and Lupita Ferrer and Jose Bardina in Esmeralda and in La Zulianita...
    when does it actually start?
for those who have not seen it, dont miss the beginning... very action packed...

had to post under name/URL, getting msg if trying to post with google acct

Count me in! This is my second time watching in and I don't plan on missing one single second! It's may favorite novela of ALL time and my favorite with TBLMOE! I cried and cried and cried when it ended!

Also, it was the first novela I saw with Daniela Romo - she is fantastic as Doña Juana and the dynamic between her and Modesta is great!

Anyone else here buy the color drawings/paintings from various Alborada scenes from our Blog Mom besides me? Love them! That's how I found CarayCaray!

    Melissa

Hi Melissa. I've got a set of Melinama's drawings. I stuck them onto my old victorian mirror and they are still there. Alborada was my first telenovela and as such holds a very dear place in my heart. Daniela Romo was amazing. I also like the horrible Diego. The actor was able to wring an amazing performance out of that character.

Querida JudyB, can you tell us more about your earphones (or Capn Sylvia)? My four years in Uncle Sam's service were mostly beneficial in the rest of my life, but I was told that I would lose my hearing early, and they were right. I especially notice promblems when I'm trying to understand Spanish on the phone, or on a low quality TV recording.

yes Sylvia, Luis Roberto Guzman did a wonderful job to get us all to hate his character here. He happens to be from P.R. like me, specifically from an area called 'Santiago Iglesias' which is where my family used to go to church when I was little, we would go to lunch at a place called Fuentes Bbq there...
after Alborada he did El Pantera, a popular series from Televisa

my first glipmpse of LRG was in Entre el amor y el odio...

I have a headset that plugs into my laptop so if I'm watching an episode online without closed caps then it's way easier to understand. Probably because the audio is better directly through headphones than from the laptop speaker which isn't very good.

I don't know if we have a headset that plugs into the TV.

Marta, thanks, yes it is Roberto Luis Guzman I was thinking of. Also an incredible hunk but wasn't his character in Alborada loathsome? Just shows what a great job he did.

Oops, meant to say Luis Roberto Guzman. Is Fuentes BBQ famous? Seems to ring a bell in my head.

Like Paula said... I don't get telefutura. :( But I'm now toying with the possibility of following along with the recaps. I suspect I will find it very frustrating... I think it will drive me crazy not to be able to see everything. But I've been missing my pals from Caray.

Part of what changed my mind about participating in Alborada was seeing that this non-recap has already attracted 41 comments - and mostly from people I recognize! Yowza. Paula, it's like you're getting the band back together or something! Between that and the reputation of Alborada, I don't think I can afford to miss out!

    Sure!
I was planning on watching the first episode. Sounds like it should be good.

    Diann

lol whadoyouno? they happen to have a site... sorry its in spanish..
    http://www.fuentesbbq.com/
except for a bilingual warning about meat... lol
now browsing that menuy makes me hungry... when I was a kid it used to be a garage and the kitchen waw the small room behind it. recently when I went they had taken over the whole hosue, remodeling it for more dining space etc... but with still the same homecooking style...

their mofongo is the absolute best i have had, a fav of my teenage daughter too, when I was a kid they would serve it with chicken broth or fish broth...

Marta, now you are making me truly hungry! I'm drooling over the Fuentes menu.

Paula, Paula. You may have just tempted me into getting no sleep at all. I had sworn off Univisión and have only been watching Telemundo. I'm just afraid smoke will start coming out the back of my DVR.

But, as someone else said, La Reina del Sur (fabulous novela) is ending soon, so I'm probably up for another sight of Colunga, bandana in place on his head, leaning against the shrouds of his pirate ship.

Novelera, he's not a pirate in this one (alas), but his character is still a good one. Instead of a bandana we get a lot of horse riding. Oh wait, there are a couple of pirates in Alborada, but Luis Manrique (Fernando Colunga) isn't one of them.

Reminder, many on this board have not seen Albo. yet, so please be careful not to reveal too much.

OK. You guys have convinced me to set my dvr and follow along on this ride. Never seen it, but have heard many of you sing its praises. I'm not sure when I'll actually get to watch the episodes though...

Paula, thank you for the reminder. Those of us who have seen Alborada need to be super careful not to reveal tidbits of information before they are revealed on the show. This will be a new experience for me as I have never re-watched a telenovela and commented on it. I had never seen La Fea before I watched its re-airing and I was very appreciative to those who had already seen and wouldn't let slip what was going to happen.

For those who've never seen it, I recommend reading the original recap the day of or day before the episode airs, rather than after.

It will help you understand the action taking place so you can concentrate on the dialog--and it won't spoil the whole novela to know what's going on just before seeing it.
    NOK

Sorry, guys, and thanks Paula for deleting my comment about a plot development in Alborada. I was thinking everyone here had seen it before.

Paula...the earphones I use are made by Sennheiser. My son installed the necessary parts into the TV and then the headphones themselves I can wear walking around, even outside and still hear what's going on in the show (within a reasonable distance) I also plug in little bitty iPod type earphones into the computer when I watch shows on youtube.

The Sennheiser headphones were a suggestion from my friend Eva who also gave me her Alborada DVD. They used he headphones for her father-in-law who was hard of hearing. Spared the rest of the family from having to hear a blaring TV all the time.

Cap'n Sylvia - Thanks! This was my costume for my barn's summer show last year. You can't see it in this picture, but it's actually an antique Victorian sidesaddle under me!

I expect I'll wander by for the recaps, at least. Or does Telefutura have somewhere to watch online maybe, the way some channels do now?

We get ONLY Univision - how lame is that? So, once more, no fun with TBLMOE.... Will probably stop by here to read the comments.

Getting the band back together... That's exactly what it sounds like. Guess I'll have to be a roadie.

For those of you without Telefutura, good news! It appears that user evileevvee has posted all of Albo. on YouTube. I'll post a link when I post the first Albo episode page next week, or you can find it by searching YouTube for "Alborada capitulo 1".

OMG, I hope I can get the Telefutura channel. All I can say is, you get to hear Placido Domingo singing that incredibly romantic song every night! And, Fernando Colunga looks s-o-o-o good in those puffy shirts & leather pants and long hair. And the swordfighting & horseback riding are fabulous. And I love Daniela Romo's hairdo and Luis Guzmán is the most evil villano, and Lucero's hair extensions are very long & curly. I hope these aren't spoilers. I absolutely adore this novela. Oh, and Monica Miguel is absolute genius as Modesta (in addition to being a director).

For anybody on the fence about it, I say give it a try. I was pulled in after the first five minutes. It moves fast, is extremely well-written and has gratifyingly few loose ends when it's over. The only thing that bothered me was that the costumes seemed a bit "nylon & cheap lace", but I quickly got over that. I've been out of town without a telly all week, so now I'm wondering if I really want to jump back into the estupidez of TdA.

I am in for Alborada. I missed the first two weeks when it originally aired and another week almost at the end. Those were the days of VCRs and with the time change. My VCR didn't adjust. I was away, so I missed and entire week.

    Milissa,
Pls tell me about the Alborada drawings, I'm interested in anything FC.

    PaulaH,
Here's looking at you kid, hard to choose the best FC picture.

The Alborado DVD seems pretty good, has continuity, unlike the butchered Amor Real. Can't wait to see the entire TN. Can't get enough of FC, excluding Mejia mierda.

I have a set of bad old tapes with one missing episode from the first go-round and I have watched the whole thing about 3 times. I also saw the official DVD from Netflix and Variopinta is right: despite being condensed, it has continuity; but this is actually one telenovela I wish were longer. It is so delicious.

Variopinta, Cap'n Sylvia can probably tell you more about them. I'm not even sure how I stumbled over them on the internet for sale by Melinama, but that's how I first found Caray Caray! and I believe it was after Alborada had already ended.

I'll have to get all of them out from a box (we moved not too long ago), but I had framed the one of Doña Juana taking a sip of tea with Modesta looking at her from behind. It was a classic scene and the drawing captured their expressions perfectly! It is my favorite of all the drawings.

OMG, is it May 31st yet? I can't wait for this to start!

Sorry, forgot to put my name - I was posting as Anonymous.

    Melissa :)

Paula~~I just emailed you. JudyB and Julie~~So glad that you are joining us for Alborada. It will be fun enjoying it again with old and new friends here at caray2. I used to get chills hearing Placido's velvet voice introducing each episode. What a lovely , guilty , summer pleasure this will be !! I thought that it was starting last night, so I was disappointed that it wasn't on. Well, at least Hines won Dancing with the Stars. I love that guy.

By the way, Cristina did a two-part show after Alborada ended. Lucero, Daniela, and Luis were very outgoing and talkative, but FC was quiet. Daniela and Lucero both sang, and Daniela and Luis danced. They can both really move. Daniela tried but could not persuade FC to dance with her. It was interesting seeing the real people behind the characters. Carla and Monica also appeared.

Susanlynn, a couple of weeks ago on a Teresa comment I posted a link to Angelique Boyer doing a dance for Bailando por la Boda, remember that great show? Manuel Landeta is also in Teresa sporting a toupee and ridiculously big mustache. It's hard to imagine him being the hot dancer he was in Bailando. And I wonder what our fave Liz Vega is up to? I haven't seen her since Duelo and Bailando.

Even though I don't usually watch Dancing With the Stars I managed to catch a few episodes. Glad to see Hines won, he was excellent and charismatic.

Variopinta, I ordered the cards from Melinama's Pratie Place website. Not sure if she still has some but you could try. Here is a link to the specific page: Alborada Souvenir Cards

Ahoy, Captain. HA !!! I just checked out the youtube for my bailando fix before I read your comments. Great minds, right ???? I caught Angelique and Liz doing some reggaton. Now, I think that I have to see if I can find Manuel shaking it. Remember he got injured , and his son took his place. I am watching Teresa , and I really hete seeing him in that ratty toup acting all smarmy and oily. Bleccchhh. In reality, he seems like such a sweetie. I never miss DWTS. I saw an interview in which Hines's partner said that she was watching Columbian salsa champions on youtube. She tried out one of their lifts , but I guess Hines dropped her and she injured her neck pretty badly. Remember all the injuries on Bailando ? As for Liz, nobody can shake it like Liz. I'd love to see her in another novela. In the meantime, we can still check out her freespirited moves on youtube, Go, Liz.

When I found that clip of Angelique I totally went down the rabbit hole with all my Bailando faves, especially Liz. I think I must have watched youtube for two hours. By the way, Jacqui Garcia is in Cuando Me Enamoro which I am recapping and watching. Unfortunately she doesn't have a very big part and she plays kind of a boring, dreary character. What a waste of an incredible smile. I just checked IMDB and Liz is in Zacatillo which I think airs in the afternoon. Maybe I'll record an episode to see if I can catch her.

By the way, you are a teacher are you not? Are you out for the summer yet? My sis teaches high school French and emails me her countdown every day. Today...7 days to go until summer vacation. (She loves teaching but she also loves her summer vacations.)

Ahoy, Captain. I know what you mean . I have fallen down that Bailando rabbit hole several times . I think that Jackie, Susana,Angelique, Manuel, and , of course, Liz Vega are my favs. As for summer vacations, I teach at a community college , and our semester ended may 11. After hurriedly getting my grades figured out and submitted, hub and I drove to Disney World for vacation. Now, we're home trying to get things done around the house before we drive to Toronto to visit our daughter and son-in-law for a week. After that, summer vacation will consist of reading on the patio and going to summer concerts at a local mall. We are also considering going to see Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons in Atlantic City. I will teach a summer reading class for 6 weeks from midJuly to mid August....4 days a week for 2 hours each day. Then, the fall semester starts the e3nd of August. However, my daughter teaches 9th grade English, and she is , indeed, counting the days.

    Hi Paula,
I have been so busy lately with photo things and the Monday slot for Cuando Me Enamoro that i haven't responded. I will try to watch Alborada again since it is my all time favorite telenovela. I would chime into a board from time to time but I hope it isn't too much work for you. It would be fun to connect on this fabulous tale though. Thanks for your generous offer!
And now reading all the 71 responses before me I realize I will have to join in, I couldn't resist an opportunity to reconnect with so many old and new friends. A special "que pasa, chica" to Susanlynn, a CarayCaray goddess!
    Go Paula Go.

Thank you for your concern, Cheryl. Fea got to be too much, but that's because they ran double episodes for the duration, and I wrote a summary for every episode. This time I'm not writing summaries, only hosting, so that should be easier.

I plan to post the synopsis and characters Monday.

Less than a week to go!

    I have two questions, compañeros.

    1. Is there any preferred abbreviation for "Alborada"? I have no intention of writing it out every time, and initials won't work like they do for CME, TDA, etc. "A" doesn't work. Alb? Albo? Alba?

    2. Is there anything that stands out about the setting? For Pasion we called ourselves by pirate names (Mad Polly Flint), and for FELS it was pastries (Paula Polvorones). Any suggestions?

I know! Potty names! I call dibbs on "Lu"! Or maybe not, huh?

Paula--As for new names, to be serious, we're dealing with many rich and titled folks here.

Can we be dons and donas, viscounts, marqueses, counts, licenciados, padres (both kinds), sisters (both kinds) and pu**as (there are alot of those, too).

I dipped into Melinama's original recap to get a head start on the full-bodied FC. My, my we have certainly come a long way in our recapping skills. I'm sure our Head Mamma had no idea what she was birthing when she recapped Alborada.

As for the abbreviation of the title of the novela--ALBO is about as short as it can get and still be meaningful. I like ALBA better, which actually means dawn (and also the white vestments of a priest, according to my old dictionary).
    NOK--Aka maybe Count-me-In?

Hi Paula, gosh I don't have a clue about how to shorten Alborada since it is only a one-word title. I'd go with NOK's suggestion. Albo or Alba.

Potty names, LOL!!! That would be a standout theme all right. The Spanish Inquisition was also taking place I think, with Mexico fighting for independence throughout. And, as NOK says, all those status-oriented titles and names. Since there are a couple of pirates in this one I guess I could technically keep my current handle, especially since the pirate is a she.

I don't get it, why do you want to shorten the name? Are those extra three or four letters so hard to type? I think I have lost touch with the caray caray culture.

Melinama that's impossible. You ARE the Caray Caray culture.

Paula, I don't think there is a respectable way to shorten the name. Anyway, it's such a beautiful name in its entirety.

I agree with Melinama and Cap'n - no need to shorten the name. How many times in a recap do you actually have to type the title of the novela - once at the top?

Like the rest of you, I've set my DVR to tape Alborada. It will be an entertaining summer novela now that the intense Reina is ending. I thought Alborada dragged a bit in the middle when all Lucero did was cry but it is a good one. (I am not a Colunga fanatic.) I found Melinama's site early on. I think I even wrote a recap or two of it. I remember urging Melinama to let us help her out as it was crazy to try a recap a novela solo. Since then, I've done it and I know that it *is* to do that.

Okay, help me out. Is Telefutura the same as Telemundo? I have the latter on my Comcast cable. If they are the same, then yes I'll be recording Alborada.

Sorry, Barbara. They're different. Telefutura is part of the Univision family. That includes Univision, Telefutura, and Galavision. Telefutura reruns many Univision novelas (most of which were originally produced by Televisa of Mexico), and they also play many TNs from other countries.

OTOH, Telemundo is a network based in Miami, and they produce their own TNs.

You will almost never see a Univision actor in a Telemundo TN or vice versa because Televisa in Mexico (who produces most of Uni's content) is very strict about not letting their stable of contracted actors work for the competition.

Thanks Paula, that's a bummer - a total bummer. I did discover, though, that Destilando Amor is coming on at 1 am on Univision. I've set it to record from tonight on. Don't know how far it is into the storyline, but I can catch up reading the Caray Caray recaps. I'll figure some way to see Alborada. I just won't be able to add any pithy remarks or deep psycho-analyzis like La Fea.

Barbara, User evileevvee has posted all of Alborada on YouTube, so you'll be able to catch it there. I'll post a link when I post the first Alborada episode.

As for the deep psychoanalysis, I don't think we'll be doing much of that. Alborada just doesn't have that kind of depth like Fea did.

Hmmm. I just typed that word three times in just one post.

Si,si [remember Luis's trademark ''si sis?'' I'd love to have a name in honor of the novela. I enjoyed being Mad Bess for Pasion. I can't remember who I was for FELS. I remember toying with the name ''Cupcake,'' but I don't think I settled on that. Anyhoo, maybe for Alborada I'll be Dona Donna, the Primadona. [Shout out to Dion and the Belmonts.] Can't wait. By the way, I'll be in Toronto next Tuesday when the novela starts, and my daughter does not get any Spanish-language stations. [At least that's what she tells me. ] Maybe I can sneak onto her computer once in awhile to see what's going on.

I've been on the fence about Alborada. I remember liking the condensed version I bought 4 or 5 years ago, but I never saw the full version. The 10 pm slot has been filled marvellously for the past few months by "La Reina del Sur," which will be ending the day before "Alborada" begins. Looks like an omen, yes?

So then why am I on the fence? Well, I've been watching "Cuando Me Enamoro," and I don't want to continue to watch two telenovelas. However, the more I watch "Cuando," the more convinced I am that I'll be happier switching to "Alborada." In spite of Silvia Navarro, "Cuando Me Enamoro" is just not doing it for me. "La Reina del Sur" has made it more difficult for me to put up with the overacting, cliched dialogue and situations, and general estupidez that I used to be able to tolerate, even enjoy.

All of this is just a long-winded way to say that yes, count me in for "Alborada."

Juanita, I hope you do get on board for Alborada. Another point in its favor (costumes notwithstanding): they seem actually to have spent money on the sets. They are chock full of elaborate detail. And you're not just looking at the same old staircase and king-sized bed. Eye candy, bigtime. The initial premise might leave some scratching their heads, but it's all laid out in the first episode and you just live with it for the rest of the ride. There is actually some complexity to the relationships and I found all the characters charismatic, even the villains. I'll join in as often as I can schedule permitting. Just checked and I do get Telefutura.

OK. I think I'm going to sign on as Dona Nube. You'll just have to imagine the tilde over the n. Tuesday is approaching swiftly, as swiftly as Luis on horseback riding to the rescue.

I can't promise not to be as long-winded as I am on CME and TDA, but it will be thoughtful and reflective (haha).
    NOK

Thanks, LXV, for your encouraging words. Yes, I've decided to watch Alborada. However, I think I'll keep my "Juanita" identity. I already have enough trouble posting to the CarayCaray boards without confusing things (and me) further.

Looking forward to seeing you all on Tuesday!
