Abismo de pasión #17 4/3/12: Mamma Mia, Thatsa Lotsa Plotsa

Productplacementadora La Anita:

After Damián interrupts the mutual choke-fest, Lucio tells him that he just came by to get a job recommendation. Damián says he’ll write it himself – by which he means he’ll get Maru to write it, and he’ll sign it. Maru is waaaay more than happy to do so. Better check that rec, Lucio, and make sure it doesn’t extol any non-work related virtues.

Damián strolls into the presidente’s office and sits down in Papi’s old chair. Spooky hummy magic-cenote music: ah, the memories. Hmmm…doesn’t he have any memories of that pivotal credenza in the corner? Wait! We like this show! DAMIAN, STAY AWAY FROM THE CREDENZA.

In pops Maru with the rec. Wow, that was quick: she must have had an old love letter on file. Damián is a little shocked to see that she has written “President of La Anita” under his name. Well, she couldn’t very well write “son of the last old dead president of La Anita,” could she? OK, but just so they both know, he’s not staying – yeah, yeah, yeah. (What do you call it when someone keeps insisting on something you know is not going to happen? An anti-anvil?)

Out on the packing floor, Gabino confronts Braulio – why didn’t you tell me the boss’s son was back? Braulio stands up to him: I don’t have to tell you everything. And anyway, just as you always said, the young folks are always waiting around to swap out the old folks, aren’t they? Jejé.

La Iglesia:

Damián drops in on the Padre and asks him about all those rumors about Eliza. Not true, says Guadalupe – she’s a good girl. People are just vicious gossips, especially, I’m sorry to say, yo’ mama. In fact, and God forgive me in advance for being such a loose-lips (boquiflojo), but Mommy Dearest has already gone over and smacked that poor girl upside the head.

Alfie, who’s been loitering over in the make-up department getting a busted lip put on, marches in when she hears her name. Thanks a lot, bro! Lots of bickering ensues and ends up with Damián telling his Mom she’s not the boss of him and he can pick his own playmates. Dude, I think you’re going to need to say that more than once.

Casa Castañon:

The Doc stops by to see his old friend Augusto, with whom he remains old friends since the days of old, even though they haven’t been in the same frame together for fifteen years. Greetings, old friend!

Augie is sober for once, although he still shambles around like Frankenstein. (I don’t remember that from before, but maybe in the old days he had less reason to lurch.) They natter about problems in the fields, and stress, and problems at home, and stress, and what old friends they are and all. Actually, Augie says, you’re the only friend I have left. In an amazingly smooth conversational transition, Doc pops out with, “You don’t really love your wife, do you?”

Well, um, no, actually. It was a mistake to marry her. The Doc tells him that even so, she has stuck by him all these years, and he should treat her better. Augie says Carmina’s not the shrinking violet you think she is – she can take care of herself.

Meanwhile, the Tropic Under Discussion is, of course, listening at the door. Eliza catches her and they have a little spit-spat about how badly behaved each finds the other. Eliza flounces off to the kitchen just as the doorbell rings. It’s Damián, asking after Eliza. Tropicana tells him she’s out running around as usual; who knows where or with whom. You know how those trashy girls are. Yeah, sure, I’ll tell her you stopped by, coz I have such superb social skills. I gotta go now and slather on a bunch of lip gloss to plant on the doctor on his way out.

Casa Tovar:

Bony Begony is giving her son a hard time for working so hard at the factory that he didn’t even bring home any gossip. What you should be doing, she says, is cozying up to the Prodigal Son – he’s the real dueño, and why shouldn’t he sack Gabino and give you the foreman’s job? Enrique’s eyes light up – really, Ma? Ya think?

The Doc comes back, and Begoña snarls that he’s not to worry, they ate without him. And where were you, anyway? Why, I stopped by to pay an old-friend visit to my old friend Augusto, like old friends do. She doesn’t much care for his choice of friends. Well, he doesn’t much care for hers – why doesn’t she dump that Arango harpy and hang out with nice women – like sweet, simple Carmina Bouvier, for instance? She looks at him like he’s the biggest idiot in the world, which he is. Yeah, you’ve got great taste in women – between crazy Carmina and that incompetent secretary, you’re 0 for 2. He flounces out, leaving her “con la palabra en la boca” (still talking.) Hard not to, really.

About Town:

Meanwhile, unbeknownst to us, Gabino has been running a Yucatán-wide talent search for someone smarmier than himself, and the lucky winner has fetched up at the cantina wearing a lean and hungry look and some kind of ratty straw man-purse. In between wild paranoid glances in all directions from under his scraggly bangs, he tells Gab that he needs to hide out for a while (presumably from the fashion police.) Gab marches him off to a hotel, makes him take a shower, and gives him a passing grade on his first exercise in gratuitous shirtlessness. He cleans up pretty good for a jumpy psycho felon. Maybe tomorrow he’ll get ponytail lessons.

“So what about that job you promised me?” “Chill out, pal, it won’t be long. My enemies are catching up with me, and I need you to watch my back.” Talk about job security – he won’t run out of work anytime soon.

In, Around & Between Casas Castañon y Arango:

Eliza and Lolita are reminiscing in the kitchen and Eliza asks her why she never married. She replies that there was someone, once…Eliza remembers: Braulio! That’s right! You were really in love with him, weren’t you? Lolita’s misty smile says it all, especially after Eliza remarks that he is always asking after her with Don Lucio. So, are you still in love with him? Whoops, we’re out of bread – here, you stir the soup while I run off to change the subject.

In the driveway, Lola runs into Damián, who asks if Eliza is back yet. Back from where? She hasn’t been anywhere. Oh, don’t believe anything her tía says – she’s just trying to keep you two apart. Here, let me drag you into the house and throw you at her.

Damián tells Eliza he knows all about the slapfest and now he understands why she was so cool to him. But we can’t let our parents run our lives – we have to confront them right now, starting with your Dad. Bad idea, Dam, he’s in his study, drink – um, thinking. All right then, come-onna my house, and we’ll straighten my mother out once and for all. (Gee, great idea, Damián! Shove Eliza up your Mom’s nose and then leave town. Way to make life easier for your homies. Clearly your grad degree isn’t in Psychology.)

While they’re strolling the 16 feet between mansions, Damián expresses surprise that Eliza’s never had a novio. I expect love to happen all of a sudden, she says, out of the blue. Dam-dam goes on to muse dreamily that he never would have suspected that he’d fall in love with a girl he’s known since they were children. Naturally Eliza thinks he means her and goes all Cinderella-at-the-ball. (Clearly his grad degree isn’t in Communication, either.) Fortunately that little anvil isn’t long in falling – about 6 seconds, actually. They go through the front door of Casa Arango hand-in-hand, and who should they meet but…

“¡Mi amor!”

…Florencia, who trip-traps across the floor as quickly as her blinding white ace bandage dress will allow and hangs herself around Dam’s neck like an Italian Medallion.

Well, looky there: Eliza can do that boiled-egg thing with her eyes, too. She doesn’t look as deranged as auntie, but give her time.

Gawd, this is good. I just wanted to stop by and say thanks before running out the door.

I will return later to heap praises on your head. You outdid yourself on this one!

Gracias, amiga.

EJ

Blue Lass, this was fun. I particularly enjoyed your assessment of Damian's education (not psychology nor communication).

I wonder who Gabino the psycho is going to have his friend harm. Would he be as audacious to try and take out Damian as Lucio was guessing? The cretin friend has quite a range; he was an evil guy in "Mi Pecado" and a funny sweetheart in LdA. Clearly he's here as option A in our TN.

Poor Elisa. We knew this was coming but I didn't think it would happen so fast. And yes Blue Lass Damian's reasoning skills need improving as well b/c to force Elisa on his evil harpy Mom and then leave town makes no sense.

Oh, so good!! A nice pre-lunch chuckle I so needed!

Need to remember "boquiflojo". That may come in very handy one day. Thanks for the translation.

Love your recap of the Augie/Doc conversation. Amazing how a scene that was rather dull suddenly comes to life with your description! I kinda like the Doc....please don't let him fall under Carmina's clutches. But then, what else has he to go home to. Poor guy.

Enrique-- way too much of a momma's boy/whiner.

Was about to clobber Damian with a Padre up the back of the head move as he pulled the hand massage/holding of Elisa, but I think the appearance of Flo took care of that. Love the eye-pooping look on Elisa's face.
Damian's going to be lucky if Gael doesn't deck him for leading Elisa on...Two points from Damian.Little truth will go a long way.

President on that letter...I agree. One of those "this is going to happen" scenes despite Dam's denial. I will be watching intently for the AbsGab reaction when that one happens.

And who should make an appearance ( well once he moved all that hair aside) but Armando Araiza! This is really turning into a Llena/MP party. I just was won over with him after his turn as Brandon in Llena, and now it looks like he's back to being a smuck like he was in Mi Pecado. But another noticeable addition to the ABS lineup.

How much do I love Padre---let me count the ways. And the scene with Gael--again. Knock it out of the park. When they both sat down on the bed at the same time with the same sigh, I about choked on my coffee. That was wonderful!

Back to the salt mines...better watch I don't start sounding like Enrique.

Blue Lass, this was such a super recap I just had to read it twice. The title got my first laugh, then immediately the second with "Productplacementadora", heh. Your editorial comments are always such a snarky delight. The entire paragraph about Gabino's "Yucatán-wide talent search for someone smarmier than himself" was pure brilliance.

My favorite scene of the night: when Braulio told Gabino the young folks are always swapping out the old ones. Bwahahaha! That made Gab so mad he was stewing about it all day. For a sweet guy Braulio sure knows how to stick it to someone.

Oh dear, poor Elisa, just one disappointment after another. I see our galán, though a recent graduate from a good European school, is completely clueless as all good galanes must be.

Wow, Armando Araiza (Horacio) showing up at the cantina surprised the heck out of me. It took me a few moments to recognize him under his scraggly bangs.

Gotta dash and run some errands. More later. Thanks Blue Lass!

HEY!! I just noticed we once again check a box that allows follow-up comments to be emailed to us. Finally!

Laughed my ass off. Thanks!

HOORAY FOR THE CHECK-BOX! My life just got a lot easier.

Blue Lass.. awesome!! here are my favs..
Wow, that was quick: she must have had an old love letter on file.. blink and you missed it!! lol!

Enrique’s eyes light up – really, Ma? Ya think? (does this character get the Loser of the show prize? i know there are a lot of contestants there but ... GEEZ!)

tells Gab that he needs to hide out for a while (presumably from the fashion police.) ROFLOL!

So, are you still in love with him? Whoops, we’re out of bread – here, you stir the soup while I run off to change the subject.
I really hope Lola gets Braulio in the end here...

Clearly your grad degree isn’t in Psychology ... or Communication... or COMMON SENSE (talk about taking the bait right into the lion cage with a guest unexpected lioness waiting)

Well, looky there: Eliza can do that boiled-egg thing with her eyes, too. She doesn’t look as deranged as auntie, but give her time. Remember her eyes when Padre Lupe burst out laughing? That was DEFINITELY the boiled-egg thing going on her eyes too.

i agree with Sylvia:
Yucatán-wide talent search for someone smarmier than himself" was pure brilliance.

daisynjay,
I am there with you on...
How much do I love Padre---let me count the ways. And the scene with Gael--again. Knock it out of the park. When they both sat down on the bed at the same time with the same sigh, I about choked on my coffee. That was wonderful!
DITTO!! and then we get the extra treat of shirtless Gael... Lord have Mercy!!

Ay Blue Lass! Nicely done, Amiga!

Here are my favorites:
-Maybe today he'll get ponytail lessons
-Lucio's non-work related virtues
-Gabino has been running a Yucatan-wide talen search for someone smarmier than himself
-goes all Cinderella-at-the-ball
-Alfonsina, who's been lointering over in the make-up dept getting a busted lip put on
-Even though they haven't been in the same frame together for 15 years
*and the winner* :
-Eliza can do that boiled egg thing with her eyes too. LOLOLOL

It seemed to me Damian was referring to Elisa when he talked about falling in love with someone from his childhood. Even I was shocked when Mi Amor in Ace Bandages showed up.

R la O, make that ace bandage single. I don't think she was wearing more than one. I kinda thought he was referring to Elisa too, but the statement was suitably ambiguous so who knows? Not Damian I'm sure.

Blue Lass - Well done! Thank you for a fun read and I love your title.
I've only gotten to watch half of this episode so far and will enjoy the rest.

I finally started watching facial expressions. OMG! LOL! Carmina's face, after her conversation with Damian and we're cutting to a commercial - classic crazy! LOL LOL LOL
I can just imagine Sabine practicing that in front of a mirror. ;-)

I enjoyed the gratuitous beefcake shot of a shirtless Gael. :-) :-) :-)

Blue: LOL all the way. Great recap.

This novela is moving along quickly: Two characters dead; children all grown up; sister marries brother-in-law; crops burned; protagonista slaps future MIL; spoiled brat shows up.

Wow, Blue Lass, that was awesome!

I am becoming a huge Gael fan. I just love him and Padre Lupe together. Paloma and her grandma are just as delightful.

For thinking Carmina is such a gentle lovely woman, Dr. Tevor sure ran away in fright when she tried to give him that goodbye kiss!

Delighted to see Armando as I adored him as Brandon, but, dang, looks like he's going to be a scary meany! Seemed like Gabino kept checking out his bare chest! Huh? What a contrasting pair they make together!

I assumed Damián referred to Florencia when he mentioned falling in love with a girl he had known since childhood, even though the writers obviously intended to confuse us. The families have been friends all these years which is why Alfie always sent Damián to vacation with them instead of coming home to Ermita. There have been references to this earlier.

Audrey

Marta:
" and then we get the extra treat of shirtless Gael... Lord have Mercy!!" Oh yeah, that too! That was a rewind scene if ever there was one. I really need to get that towel concession going. Man is doing it without our help.

"Seemed like Gabino kept checking out his bare chest! Huh? " Oh my, I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought those two were getting very close in the "in your face" dept. and Gab was actually kinda checking out his buddy. Maybe a bit jealous someone has better abs than he does...I say line 'em all up and we'll vote.

I need to get a cold drink and get back to work!

daisynjay...
I say line 'em all up and we'll vote.

LOL so we will have a fantasy male abs sighting (with sighting order and rating per episode) instead of fantasy football in this blog... LOL i am all for that!!

the men in the blog can do same with the women, if you care to...

Do you think Lucio did the nasty with the sexetary? There could be trouble in paradise down the road if they are intending to play that up.

Doris - trying to visualize Sabine practicing those faces in the mirror is hysterical!

Daisy, this TN does seem to be a veritable banquet of shirtlessness -- and while I haven't actually counted, it seems as if the telenovios outnumber the telenovias by a substantial margin. Of course, if they start killing each other off, we'll need the spares.

Well, I for one say hurrah and pray for long life for our young lads, even the baddies so we can have a little evening eye candy for as long as possible. If this TN has one up on Cuando, it's that. There we seemed to have to suffer through with Dr. PleaseGiveHimAHospitalGown as our only shirtless wonder most of the time.

It'll be a rough job after a long day, but I think I can force myself to take an extra hard perusing of the "off with their shirts" scenes and give the men their ratings due.

Do you think the telenovela gods heard me whining for age-appropriate eye candy? Both Horacio and Uncle Lounge Lizard are in their 40s...and they wear it well.

Doris - trying to visualize Sabine practicing those faces in the mirror is hysterical!
Ditto!!

Do you think the telenovela gods heard me whining for age-appropriate eye candy? Both Horacio and Uncle Lounge Lizard are in their 40s...and they wear it well.

well, shirtless Cesar Evora might have been ok but ToadHead is probably not visually ...eh... pleasing.

My how the talk of these fine specimens seems to have lit up my phone messages....thanks for breaking up a very boring afternoon of system issues and emails.

I knew Armando was in his 40's, but didn't realize the actor playing AbsGab was that in that age range too. He may be a slimy character, but agree he seems fit as a fiddle.

Marta, I love me my Cesar Evora. That voice just makes me melt, but not sure a shirtless Cesar would get much of a vote in this contest. As for Mr. Hornrims...he can withdraw from the proceedings at any time.

The actor playing Gabino's only in his 30s. It's the Italian uncle that's older.

Gabino's friend was kind of looking at him like a lion who hadn't eaten any wildebeest in a long time.

Alfie must have been on the Skype, the text, Facebook and everything else to bring Flo out to the hacienda.

Dr. Tovar was only friends with Augusto to sneak looks at Carmina.

LOL Anon207...

Thank you for the recap Blue Lass!

I think Damián's words were indeed made to be confusing. He was definitely pushy with Elisa, I agree with Blue Lass in that he was just adding to the mess when he plans on going back.

I don't know if I like Armando Araiza's hair here, there are certain shots when it looks great and other shots were I hate it. Mmmm. His hair is more confusing than Damián.

Some changes to the original story:

-Uncle Lizard was actually brother lizard. The character was younger than his sister too, not by much though, maybe a year.

-The Lolita character had moved on from Braulio after the years had passed and he was very much in love with his wife, the Antonia character never got involved with Gabino and their kid just around 7 years old, not a rebel teenager.

-The Alfonsina character didn't care about the personal life of her servants and she had nothing to do with helping Antonia snag Braulio.

-Armando Araiza's character did not exist.

-I don't remember how the Elisa character found out about Florencia but their first meeting was at the sugar cane fields when her and Gael where checking out her mother's lands and found Damián and his girlfriend walking to the road because their car had broke down. They offered them a ride back to town.

Jarocha

Oh you lionesses! We do have a veritable cornucopia of six-packs on this show, don't we? Armando Araiza might actually have a 12-pack. Let's see, on the evil side we have Gabino and Horacio. On the good side we have Damian and Gael. In the middle (not really good and so far only naughty) we have Uncle Paolo. I keep wanting to call him Uncle Luigi (from La Fea).

Anon207, funny comment about Alfie trying everything to get Flo out to the country. I do see her fine hand in this.

Blue Lass, "if they start killing each other off, we'll need the spares." Bwahaha!! Good one.

I keep wanting to call him Uncle Luigi (from La Fea).
LOL!!
Sylvia,
and we will also see his current wife, Jaime Camils older sister, Isabella Camil... she will be in this as well later on.

Marta, really? It will be a family affair! I like Isabella Camil. I wonder who she will play?

Jarocha, I like hearing the comparisons to the original. Thanks for sharing.

OT: I love Cesar Evora as well, esp the voice... but it seems Televisa has built a habit in bringing him back for every remake of the novelas he has done. he has been in EVER remake of Canaveral, and now he was in TdA which was a remake of El Privilegio de Amar, where he played the Padre. it was odd to see him yet again in a remake of a novela he had a major role in.

Jarocha, are Cesar Evora and Fran Gattorno the only return actors from Canaveral here? Was Blanca Guerra or Erik del Castillo in Canaveral at all? I can't remember.

Marta: No, Erick del Catillo and Blanca Guerra weren't in the original.

I think César Évora and Blanca Guerra are the only ones from Cañaveral.

Originally, Sebastián Zurita was supposed to play the Damián character and they had arranged for Juan Soler to play his father. This was interesting since they both played the Damián character in Cañaveral, Zurita as a kid and Soler as an adult.

Soler then had scheduling problems and they had to replace him so the producer asked César Évora to fill the role. Later Zurita was changed for David Zepeda.

When César Évora decided to join the cast in the same character he had played in Cañaveral, the producer asked Azela Robinson to come back to play again her character, which she agreed for a while but then something happened and she couldn't anymore and Sabine Moussier was cast.

That's all I know about the Cañaveral actors coming back for this version.

Jarocha

Sorry, I meant only César Évora and Francisco Gattorno were the only ones from the original, not Blanca Guerra.

Jarocha

thanks Jarocha. i checked imdb and none other actors here were listed on Canaveral, so you are right. just the two of them...

Reading this brings much joy to my dull day. I wish they'd cut Familia back to one hour and put this on at 8; then maybe I could keep up more consistently. Even though I haven't seen this episode yet, I wanted to find out what happens and now I have a huge grin from the comments. Quick, someone say something grim and annoying so if anyone walks by, they'll think I'm working.

Naive Damian thinks he can waltz in and fix everything and waltz back out? Has he been paying any attention while everyone tells him how truly messed up this town is, mostly due to his mother? If she was willing to banish her son for years to keep him away from Elisa, telling her to play nice isn't going to help.

Julia - you want grim and annoying? Think Alfonsina. Think "The witch is whack" and "Alf makes me Ralph".

Jarocha,
Add me to the intrigued by comparisons to the old show list. How fun to have had Soler y Zurita.

Julia, quick, imagine Disgusto in a Speedo. Did that help?

Oh man, Azela Robinson would have been great as Carmeany. I'm kind of disappointed she couldn't do it. However I've gotta say that Sabine is doing a bang-up job in the role.

Silvia, Azela Robinson was amazing in the role. I still think it was the role of her career, even after all these years.

Jarocha

Thanks for the great recap! While it's already been mentioned I want to add my praise for "So, are you still in love with him? Whoops, we’re out of bread – here, you stir the soup while I run off to change the subject." Not to mention the line soon after about throwing Damian at Elisa.

I have to say I am really liking David Zepeda in this one. I really didn't buy him as Galan at all in LFDD, but I am here. I also like Mark and Livia....but I'm still seeing Teresa everytime I look at Angelique. I keep thinking the sweet and innocent is all a manipulative act. I hope I get over that.

Angelique Boyer in a blonde wig would look like Laura Palmer from Twin Peaks. How's that for arcane?

Yes! Mike you are so right.

Sara, I can't remember what I've seen David Zepeda in before this, but I remember I didn't much like him. However I think he's a good Damian so far, very convincing. I can't wait to see how he untangles his Italian Medallion tonight.

Julia...
sorry, but Alf makes me Barf...

Sylvia, Disgusto in a speedo? please! say it isn't so!! sorry but i will pass...
