Abismo de pasión #102 8/3/12: Doctor Tovar Burns the Toast
Labels: abismo
The best were the dinner party with Ramona and Paloma, the slap on Damian, and the near confession to Braulio. Now Braulio will be able to carry Lolita's milk. Yeah!
Wasn't that dinner party a hoot?! I laughed out loud a few times. Pal, Quique and even Doc Tovar looked like they were having a hard time not busting out in laughter each time Ramona said one of her predictions of doom. LOL! Best dinner party ever.
I actually don't think Dam deserved all these smacks. He didn't accuse Elisa. He came to warn her and get her alibi so that he could throw it in his mama's face and prove her wrong. Maybe he could have gone about it another way. Maybe he shouldn't have asked her to tell him where she was. But she flew off the handle and assumed he believed his mother even before he asked her that.
The family Tovar dinner sounds like something from The Real Housewives of La Ermita with Ramona as their prophet of doom re: all the Feng Sh!t elements that are showing the bad energy surrounding Paolo and Sabrina's wedding.
Doris.
Speaking of words....Cynderella your imaginative picturing of Ramona "grinding black mamba tongues in a bowl, adding bat wing dust and dragon toe fungus"...well, what can I say? You'd hate to be on the other end of that spell!!! Well, I'd hate to be on YOUR bad side, amiga. Lord! what a mind.
Also enjoyed Dam it Will Somebody Kill Me Now, and Dam It Just Shoot Me.
Alas, I can see from your wry rendition that you were not puddling up at the Gael/Padre scene like I was. All misty-eyed was I, and when the minor cello notes begin to play beneath the violins, wah, it was just so sweet. Seriously. Very moved.
And in line with my ridiculously soft-hearted view of things, I thought the engagement dinner humiliation of ditzy ,snobby, empty-headed Begoñia was just a bit harsh. She's a bubble-headed bitch but when I think of the hours she spent whipping up those hors d-oeuvres, dinner and dessert, setting the table, wanting to get things just right for her stupid daughter, yessss, call me a wimpy kid, but I felt sorry for her. A funny funny scene, but still, I was wincing.
One final note: is the actor playing Enrique dating the actress playing Sabrina. Those two do seem to have a hard time keeping their hands off each other.
This has to be the first episode in several days ( weeks?) that I just REALLY enjoyed.
My personal favorite was the sweet interaction between Padre and Gael, from when Padre first walked in to when Gael finally touched him on the shoulder and walked out. Thank goodness I had a box of kleenex nearby. Those two actors just know how to express the relationship so beautifully between these two. The acting was subtle, understated and very moving. Loved the Papa Padre, I was a mess over that one.
The dinner party was an absolute riot. Ramona self-inviting herself, and then proceeding to do her best to be a debbie-downer...too funny. Loved the shot of Gweedddooo nodding in agreement. And then Doc - oh, he is just the best! Hope the quail were tasty.
As for Dam taking the role of Gab for the evening, I admit that he really didn't accuse Elisa of anything. I think everyone is just going off the deep end with him because he is so Stoooppiddd. Just kidding, but more really that he has broken Elisa's heart, and then manages to keep bugging her. Plus he does rather seem to be under mumsy's thumb again to most of them. (I'm also thinking maybe that slap from Delores might have a little reserved anger for Rosendo and what he did to her Steff.)
What kind of agreements do these people sign? There's seems to be a sorry lack of a decent lawyer in this town. How can Alfi foreclose on the land so quickly? There's supposed to be a time frame noted. Beanie is really suffering with the legal and medical stuff on this TN.
Well we knew that Elisa and Gael would hook up at some point, so looks like we get that next week. I have really mixed emotions on this. They really do "work" together so much better than she and Stoopid ( and Bowyer and Tacher have better chemistry, just like the actors for Pal and QuiQui), but we know how this TN will probably end and I am going to hate to see my guy getting hurt. Think I lay in extra kleenex boxes.
That was the best dinner party ever. It had theatricals, awkward moments (that seemed to last forever), and people on the verge of busting a gut. If I could capture screen shots, I would have gotten the one right after Begonia asks why Ramona & Paloma are in her house and QuiQui says I invited them. The shot of him, his guests, and his Dad smirking at his mom was priceless!
Why does Tonia not understand that getting jealous of Braulio's interest in Lolita will not win him back?
Yes Judy the whole episode would have been better, especially for Dam, if people had used their words. He knows his mother is lying but frames the question to Elise and others in such a way, it seems he believes his mom. He needed to say I know you didn't do this but if my mother presses charges to you have an alibi? If not, we need to get witness so she can't send you to jail. Of course this is all way too reasonable and can't happen b/c the lead couple has to stay apart for at least four or five more weeks.
And Fina and Flo play Dam so badly, its a good thing he's a galan b/c otherwise he might pull an Augusto and slap the mess out of the two of them when he realizes the full extend of their treachery. I must admit I want to see Flo and Fina fight/chat/whatever the writers have planned if its good when the fake baby plot comes to light.
The smile on SssPaolo face after Doc says now way Sabrina is going to marry you means the run away & steal the baby is still on. Boo, hiss.
"Braulio brings Horacio a change of clothing from Dolores. What a surprise, it includes an ugly plaid shirt," "Dam It Will Somebody Kill Me," "Dam It Just Shoot Me’s office," "Dolores Ali-Tyson slapped the plaque off of his pearly whites in mid-sentence" I don't know how you manage to make such dull episodes funny, but you do it every time, thanks!
JudyB, "And in line with my ridiculously soft-hearted view of things, I thought the engagement dinner humiliation of ditzy ,snobby, empty-headed Begoñia was just a bit harsh." I agree! Dr. T has had an emotional affair with Ingrid and a real affair with Carmina and he walks into his daughter's pedida, on a very high horse, announcing that he no longer lives at home, Give Me A Break! Begoñia's sins are minor compared to his!!
Daisy [Damian] "does rather seem to be under mumsy's thumb again" Yes! There needs to be a limit on how many times a galan can say "Mi Madre!" in one episode, and whatever the number might be, he's crossed it. Goodness gracious, no amount of money or prestige would be worth an entanglement in the Arango quagmire!
Fabulous recap, Cynderella, thanks so much! I especially enjoyed all the little things that didn't actually happen in the episode.
I can't believe i got so involved with the olympics coverage that if it was not for my daughter, i would have missed th whole thing. she reminded me just in time for me to watch the 2nd half of the Padre/Gael scene, the Padre lifting his feet and the final hug, and also the slap/punch fest.
Although I agree with Judy on preferring words to violence, 'Dam It Will Somebody Kill Me Now' deserved every little bit of both of those...
Loved your references all around, esp the plaid shirt, the Tyson/Ali comparison of Lolita and your extra little details here and there.
Thanks for the hilarious recap of the dinner party. i totally missed that so will have to see if i find it on univision or youtube... after taking care of my mom's breakfast.
Daisynjay, at this point I coudl not agree with you more on the we wish for Quique/Paloma and Gael/Elisa pairings having much better chemistry than the pairings we are sure we will get in the end... about time a novela deviated from the predictable pairings in the end, right?
thanks again cynd! you rock!
Carlos, did you see that Marlene Esparza got a bye in the round of 16? she is going straight to the QF tomorrow!
- Florencia tells her mother-in-law that she didn’t get to ride the stallion on the wedding night!
- “I trapped him fair and square, yet I don’t feel secure with him!”
- Alfonsina says that Elisa threatened and tormented a girl who is pretending to be pregnant!
But the line that really got me was this one:
- Damien emerges from the office wearing a hockey mask, some shin guards and a cup.
I can totally picture it. :)
This TN is such a mess, but I keep watching it! lol
I agree with you, Damian and Elisa have no chemistry. They're boring.
Also, I think Zepeda is a really bad actor. He's so wooden and robotic. I like him better in LFDD, at least he had chemistry with Sandra.
Rosita.
Steve
One time I did think Damian and Elisa had momentary chemistry was when he went into Augusto's office to discuss the attack on his mother with Elisa. She escorted him to the door to leave, he grabbed the door, looked at her and slammed the door shut. She, however, escaped behind Daddy's desk. It was a good, but brief, moment.
I loved Ramona as the voice of doom. That was a classic dinner. Begoñia had to eat crow, oh, I mean quail.
Paolo looked delighted as he left. Maybe he has found a way to get himself off the hook - unless he plans to steal his own baby and have Flo pass it off as hers.
Don't everyone cuss me out at once, but I like Damien and Elisa much better than I like Elisa and Gael. I think that Dam gets into trouble with Florencia because he's just silly. I almost feel sorry for him when he looks so hurt when she rejects him or when Dolores told him that Elisa dammned him to hell. Gael on the other hand annoys me. Elisa and Paloma are best friends. He has no problem literally rolling around in the grass with Paloma on Monday and then going after her best friend on Tuesday. He also KNOWS that his best friend is in love with Elisa. He wiped his butt with Paloma and basically flushed her down the toilet. That's why I don't like him. Yes, she threw herself at him, but if he's so in "lurrvvv" (I don't know who started that, but it's funny) with Elisa, he wouldn't sleep with her friend.
Thanks for your comments. Like I said, Dam and Elisa are just dumb. Gael covets Elisa. Like Vivi, I don't think Dam did anything to deserve being slapped and hit. I think if my mother told me that someone I know broke into her house and tried to kill her, I'd at least try to investigate it a little bit. I know Alfonsina is a liar, but Elisa did act like a fool at the mass. Alfonsina does deliberately mess with Elisa and get her riled up. So, yeah, I would at least ask a question or two (even if I did doubt it).
Remember that Alfonsina is totally sold on the idea of Dam and Flo having her grandchild. So she would do ANYTHING to keep Elisa out of the picture so she does not spoil the plans.
And Dam knows all this. Elisa is not just someone he knows, Elisa is the most obvious target for her mother to put the blame on, and Dam has heard from several folks that it was really dark and his mother was waltzing around the dark house... not that there is no possible way for his mother to recognize her attacker, but he should know his mother's tactics and he should know that his mother would not lose a chance like this to turn the whole thing on her no. 1 enemy, Elisa.
Yes, Elisa acted stoopid at the church, and Alfie is his mother and was attacked... and he did tell his mother he doubted her word... but went straight to ask Elisa...
SO he was wrong in asking Elisa, even indirectly... but did he deserve the slap and punch? maybe not. but like some have said, this might be a cumulative frustration on Dam's behavior for not only that but all along. Stoopid for letting Flo and her family stay, stoopid for getting drunk and boinking her, double-shot stoopid for marrying her. SO the questioning of Elisa just overflowed the cup for many.
Elisa had every right to confront Alfie at the funeral. Alfie was the one who destroyed Auguso's business, along with the reputation of both his wife and daughter. After that, Augusto went into a depressive downward spiral that he couldn't kick until it was too late. Alfie has been in lockstep with Carmina all the way until the shooting in the complete destruction of a family. Alfie didn't come to the funeral in kindness, she came to provoke. I'm glad someone had the guts to say something to our very black, black- hearted widow. You come to the funeral of a man whose life you wrongly DESTROYED to upset the family? It's like Alfonsina is riding around La Ermita on a destructive bulldozer and no one can stop her. Thanks for trying Elisa!
Marta, are you thinking our boxer Marlen has her match this AM at 7:45 Central on CNBC? It is so hard to figure out the times and channels of the events!
I just watched the episode this morning. Very frustrating with Alfabitch and all, but satisfying watching folks slap and punch Dam.
Thanks you for another funny and fine recap. The Dinner Party scene was pure French farce, or, I should say Mexican farce, and you wrote of it beautifully.
I must highlight some of the gems of this scene:
'Paolo hands Enrique a bottle of champagne and instructs him to open it. Enrique grimaces and refrains from bashing his potential brother-in-law in the head with it.'
Lord, the look of loathing Enrique gave Paolo was so REAL, wasn't it? Also real were the smirks on several actor's faces, esp. Edmundo's.
'Ramona tells Paloma that she will go with her if she changes her mind about attending the dinner party. Ramona would love to go since Mrs. Kravitz insulted her grand-daughter.'
Cynderella, when I saw that scene with Ramona and Paloma I thought, "Oh, no, watch out Begoña! You are going to be punished today for all of your gossipy crap and class nastiness!" Black mamba tongues, bat wing, dragon toe fungus, That sounds like a most potent recipe.
The rest of the dinner party was a scream, from Ramona uttering dire but clearly made-up pronouncements about the color of the flowers and the novia's gown, to her tucking in her napkin to tuck in to the special dinner of squab that Begoña worked so hard to prepare.
And, early in the story, weren't the birds Elisa brought to the curandera to heal, replaced with pigeons (squabs, young pigeons) when they died?
I know I am supposed to just take everything on faith from here on out, but I think this is just another touch of the nasty by our sadistic writers. Paloma is served squab by Begoña.
I just love your recaps, Cynderella.

I guess IMO you are not forgiven ANY behavior just because you are a MOTHER...
now lets look at it from Elisa's point of view... this is NOT the first time Damian just takes his mother's word for granted and either accuses or questions Elisa on something his mother said, is it? ALfie hid the letters to and from Dam with Gael and Elisa, she prevented any contact between Damian and his friends, heck, even letters to and from Loopy were destroyed... When she and Elisa had their slap exchange she conveniently did not tell Dam that she had slapped Elisa... she would not let Elisa anywhere near Dam when he was recovering from the gunshot wound...she did NOT deny the possibility they are siblings, even though she is sure the Rosie/Stefie relationship was NOT THAT LONG. at least she never questioned Elisa's origin until it was brought up to her, so i really dont think she doubted Elisa's origin. Elisa has always been under attack from Alfie and that is not exactly a secret, even Alfie's own brother Loopy knows her enough to loudly disagree with her schemes/lies when she tries to start a whole new mess against Elisa/Stefie. Recently she blackmailed Elisa into surrendering her lands to Alfie with high interest in order to drop the charges against Augusto. So Elisa has more than enough reasons to be on the defensive and react insulted/offended at ALfie even showing up at the mass for her dad.
I was absent all of last week. The Lovely Linda and I spent most of last week relaxing in Galveston. The only TV we watched was a bit of the Olympics in the hotel bar.
I did catch up on Abismo and the great recaps over the weekend. Sorry I missed out on the great grammar discussions. There seems to be a lot more interest here in grammar in this TN than there was in previous novelas.
Loved, loved, loved Ramona at the Tovars. How good it was to see Begoña at a loss for words. Eddie really seemed to enjoy her performance.

Read this!
Sounds like Cancan Ren of China is the gal to beat! I haven't watched it either, but I might like to after our gal was booed by the Venezuelans.

It's more interesting than some of the fillergarbage (yes, one word)the writers have been giving us! :-)
