Refugio Para el Amor #139 Tue 10/23/12 All Great Stories Begin With A Journey....
…...If not all, then most of them
do. The main character, through circumstance or choice, is led to
leave the comfortable nest of childhood and seek his future destiny
elsewhere. The trip involves hardship and joy, triumph and defeat,
hope and disillusionment....and God willing a happy ending!
So let's take a look tonight at all
our characters, not just Luciana, and see where they are on this long
and eventful journey.
Roselena:
She seems to be moving closer to her destiny of emptiness,
loneliness and abandonment. We see her walking through her soulless
house, checking for dust on the banister, and stopping to study the
picture of her with her two sons. The vacuity of her life is
underscored by the total absence of background music. She lives and
moves in utter silence, other than her complaint to Mati about her
sister Connie leaving the house.
R- How ungrateful she is, biting the hand that feeds her! But
you'll see, she'll come back ashamed and humiliated, abandoned by her
younger lover.
Mati defends Connie, noting the courage she showed raising and
supporting her children alone after her divorce when Aldo was only
one. But none of this cuts any ice with Roselena, who thinks if
Connie were decent she'd forgo men altogether and devote herself to
raising her children....chastely.
She is daily sinking deeper into criminal cruelty and contempt. And
her sessions with the psychiatrist still revolve around her desire to
discover the identity of Maximino's lover. When the doctor questions
why she persists, when the private investigator has discovered
nothing, she mutters “We all know that aparencias
engañen (appearances
are deceiving) and I will
find out who she is.” She is never motivated by love or
tenderness. Vengeance and destruction are her only driving forces.
Connie: She
is moving forward on her journey of faith and wholeness. Faith in
Oscar's love and her ability to nurture it and be blessed by it.
Faith in her decision to distance herself from the hatred and
negativity of her sister. Faith in the future, that whatever the
outcome of her romance with Oscar, she will be okay. Come what may,
she'll be able to earn her living, relate with love to her grown
children, treasure the time she has with Oscar—whether long or
short-- and thrive and appreciate the life she has.
The happiest scenes of the evening are with her and Oscar. When she
visits him in the office, he kisses her tenderly, tells her she's
beautiful and that he loves her. Later, the entry into his
apartment(with two fully packed suitcases) is joyful and full of
humor. He's down on one knee, she springs into his arms. They kiss,
laugh, execute a little dance twirl and run off in the direction of
the bedroom where he promises a wonderful surprise. Sign me up
for that!
More than anything, I treasure Connie's laughter. We hear it often.
And it's one of the major differences between her and Roselena.
Have we ever heard Roselena laugh spontaneously? Sincerely? With joy?
I don't think so. There's no room for humor in a heart full of
hate.
The Barrio
Babes: We're talking
Violeta, Serena, and Delia. All three women are on their own
hopeful journey, intending to build their own business and make a
living on their own terms. Mind you, the form-fitting coveralls are
every bit as sexy (or as Pato notes, provocativo)
as the Inferno outfits, but these little diablitas
are determined to make
their new business venture work. The grand opening is launched with balloons ,botanas
(snacks), and a
blessing (cue the holy water) by Padre Honesto.
Even
with all this joyful preparation, the event is momentarily marred by
the arrival of Boris, ready again to beat up Lorenzo for stealing his
novia.
Fabio and Polo warn him that this time Lorenzo has backup and Boris
is quickly sent on his way (while false friend Lulu simpers in the
background, seemingly happy with the trouble she caused.)
Brigida:
Hard to know, at this point, where Brigida's journey will end.
Throughout the story, she's been a bitter, scheming, jealous
character, anxious to align herself with evil doings, as long as it
involves an increase in income. But her eyes may be being opened as
she spends her days at Gala's being endlessly ordered around by both
Gala and her entitled mother Julie. The latter casually requests a
flan (custard pudding)
to be made for their
guests. I've made a flan and believe me, it takes some work. It
certainly can't be whipped up at a moment's notice, but Julie
wouldn't know that. I doubt if she's every cooked a meal in her
life. Will Brigida eventually tire of this degrading alliance?
Especially as she observes Gala's cold-hearted neglect of Rodrigo's
baby? Time will tell. She already seems to be disenchanted.
Rodrigo's daughter: Let's not even
mention birth mother Gala, because as far as we know, she hasn't even
touched the baby (as yet unnamed). When Julie asked if she wanted the
niña brought
in, she asked Qual
niña? So far, the
infant has only known the loving touch of her father, who calls her
his little princessita
and that of the nurses, who hopefully are treating her with affection
and caring. Not even Julie will hold the niña,
for fear of getting spit-up on her expensive outfit. Her appalled
party friend, with considerable more humanity than either Gala or
Julie, does insist on holding and cooing to the little one when the
nurse brings her out. But we all are hoping that eventually this wee
one will end up with a real
loving mother, our heroine Luciana.
Gala: Gala
remains as committed to deception and evil as ever. When she gets a
phone call from Rodrigo saying that he's coming home from the office
to eat, she pretends the baby is right beside her and that she's
loving every minute of nestling with her newborn. As a matter of
fact, she is neither resting, nor cuddling with the baby—simply
idly flipping through a magazine, while mom holds court outside, and
the nurses fret over the baby's colic and poor reaction to the
formula they're feeding her.
While she has absolutely no time for the child, she does
immediately launch into plans to have the staff photographer come to
take pictures of her and Rodrigo with her daughter—to splash on the
magazine cover. In addition to a full spread article inside. The
baby remains a simple means to an end— a human prop to solidify
Gala's relationship with Rodrigo and to further wound the hapless
Luciana, whose own baby has disappeared. It's a gratuitous cruelty
designed to drive the knife even deeper into her rival's heart, when
she sees the magazines on the newsstand.
Hard to believe that Gala could sink any lower on her spiritual
journey. She and Roselena are running neck and neck in the race to
see who can reach the lower circle of Hell first.
Vicky:
Her journey seems similar to Violeta's. She's determined now to
succeed through her work alone, rather than subsisting on the crumbs
of attention and sexual passion from an older married lover.
She rejects the auto he had Aldo buy for her and snaps that if he's
trying to reconquistarme he should ask her what she really
wants, rather than loading her now with expensive, unneeded gifts.
She also pushes Aldo away. She's concerned that Max could actually
kill Aldo, a move the latter shrugs off. But Vicky holds her ground.
A good decision for the moment.
Jana: (also
occasionally spelled Hannah in the closed captions):
She's still the sweet affectionate gal she's always been....and
still sweet on Lorenzo as well. While snacking on carrots and celery
with her snobby friend Lulu, she convinces her to attend the grand
opening of Curvas Continuas (Violeta's new car wash business) in
order to prove that she's not a pretentious society chick (fresa).
Both she and Lorenzo
are so young though, we have no idea where their romantic journey
will end.
Oscar:
Our favorite mature galan is doing everything right. At one point,
during Connie's visit to the office, he's on the phone with Linares.
When he rings off, he turns and says “This guy is a genius at
business. You wouldn't believe the money the firm is going to make
with this deal he's brokering.”
C-
Well, he was a founding socio
of the business, and he was responsible for getting the corporation
off the ground.
O-
That's why I don't understand the fraud. It's a real rompecabezas
(puzzle). But let's
talk about us—are you ready for the mudanza
(move)?
C-
If you mean by mudanza
two suitcases, yes!
Lots
of tender kisses, plans for a bigger apartment and tender murmurings
ensue. He even hints that one day she might agree to be Señora
Gaitan. What's not to love about this guy? He's still a little slow
on the uptake about Max's nefarious schemes, but that speaks as much
to his loyalty as to his naiveté. He's simply too integro
and straightforward to see others' crookedness.
Magda and Paz:
While concerned with both their daughters' futures, they're also
hard at work on providing an opportunity for the women of HetHet to
earn a decent living through the pottery business. Magda has still
not moved beyond her resentment of don Aquiles, but is also wondering
if Violeta would have been better off knowing her father right from
the beginning and perhaps getting some monetary backing. Paz notes
that it might not have made any difference at all since don Aquiles
is a very strange man. And who knows what he might expect in return
(cobrar)
if he did give help.
Don Chelo:
We get a little of his back story as he loads up a rather
unbelievable amount of half-empty liquor bottles. (Seems to me a real
alcoholic would have finished them all by now. And how much booze
money can you earn singing opera off-key in the park anyway?) As the
soundtrack plays opera music in the background, he confesses “No
Mateo, I didn't always live in this rusty old train wagon. Before...
I had a home, parents, a sister....here's a picture of my mother. So
pretty. She's probably died of sadness por
mi culpa. Me fui y nunca volvi. (by
my fault. I left and never came back.)
As
the housecleaning continues, he studies Mateo's face and wonders Who
could have thrown you in the trash? You don't have the face of
someone “commun y corriente” (run of the mill). But what if
someone stole you? What if someone ripped you out of a mother's
arms? As if on cue,
little Mateo starts to wail. (Please someone, rescue this baby now!)
Hopefully, don Chelo's journey is drawing close to the happy ending
of repentance and redemption. He faces his past, gives up alcohol,
helps Mateo find his real parents, and makes peace with his
previously wasted life. If that's the case, perhaps we can comfort
ourselves, that Mateo's destiny was to rescue a lost human being
before being returned to his own loving and grief-stricken mother.
As for the actual baby playing Mateo, he appears to be absolutely
miserable and rather frightened by don Chelo. Another reason to wish
for a speedy reunion with Luciana.
Pato:
If Oscar is our favorite mature galan, Pato is clearly our preferred
young one. His journey started with his ill-fated climb on the
mountains of HetHet and has continued through his hard-fought
rehabilitation and painful yearning for Luciana. He has been both
wounded and strengthened by that love. It fires his determination to
get better, even if he will never be her lover as he longs to be. As
he awaits the arrival of his physical therapist (whose only training
cues seem to be “despacio despacio”) he tells Matilda, “I won't
accept any of the limitations of the doctors. I may never run a
marathon but I will
walk one day. We have seen him grow from an impetuous but sensitive
younger brother to a caring and courageous man.
Melissa:
Well, she finally spills the beans to Luciana. As the two of them
talk about planning a birthday party for Claudio (Melissa's idea),
Luciana notes that Melissa likes Claudio a lot. Nope, it's more than
that. She admired him from the start. He was greatly respected in
university law circles, in spite of his 20-year incarceration. But
as she got to know him, she fell in love with him.
Cara

But he's old enough to be your father! she points out. And while
Melissa gleams, shines, glows and gushes about the energy and joy
Claudio's presence gives her, Luciana points out that that's the love
of a little girl for a father. (Maybe we're supposed to assume that
the absence of Melissa's biological father in her life has led to
this baffling crush on Linares.) So we get more gushing about that
tingle in her tummy when she sees him, the rapid heartbeat and the
overwhelming gladness when they meet. And when one finally finds
the path to true love, one wants to follow it, she adds. Luciana
looks pensive, and sadly echoes the words true love. But she
really doubts that her dad can reciprocate that love. Well, let's
let him decide that, snaps Melissa.
I simply can't predict where Melissa and Claudio's journey will end
up. Can you? The irony might be that Maximino loses his young lover
Vicky, while Claudio gains one. We shall see.
Luciana:
When the village shaman predicted Luciana's journey to her destiny
would involve many tears, I don't think any of us would have
predicted the loss of her baby. ( If I'd known, I might not have
watched!) The light has dimmed in our beautiful heroine's eyes. She
appears fragile, pale and defeated. But, judging from the previews,
her faith and determination are about to give her new energy to
continue her determined journey to find her son. She plans to search
every orphanage, every casa
de hogar (temporary shelter for children) and casa de beneficiencia
(charity house) in
order to find her son. And let's hope her spirits can survive the
publication of Gala's it's-all-about-me magazine photo story of her
happy-family values- motherhood. At any rate, we've seen her evolve
from a simple small town girl to a woman in love, a woman scorned, a
budding business executive and successful artist, and now a stricken
but determined mother. Hopefully, she's on her way to a happy
ending.
Rodrigo: Can
we call it a journey when our hero is still circling the drain?
We've seen him make small steps, but not many. He resists the idea
of the photo spread, but Gala overrides him. And he lets her. After
an involved photo setup, complete with special lighting and screens,
the infant is brought out like a prize package, tucked into Rodrigo's
arms (not Gala's, God forbid) and our witch drapes herself over
her husband, noting which is her best profile (while he rolls his
eyes), and a number of pictures are taken. A few also including the
alleged grandmother (but call me Julie not abuela!)
posing provocatively on the couch behind the pseudo-happy parents.
Rodrigo is charmingly affectionate with his baby daughter, but
alarmingly weak in every other aspect. Affection is not enough to
make a man. He needs to show courage, integrity, discernment and
strength. So far, none of those qualities has made an appearance.
He pouts with his mother but hasn't set any limits on her, whereas
Pato has. He sulks with Gala but hasn't taken steps to free himself
of their pointless marriage. He wilts when she insists on the photo
shoot and publicity. He seems to win a round when Gala accepts his
suggestion that the baby be called Alexis but we don't know if that's
just another short-term strategy or it will really happen. He talks
endlessly about finding his lost son—both to Luciana and to his
newborn daughter-- but has shown no results in that quest either.
Rodrigo's spiritual journey has been riddled with catastrophic
decisions so far. He was at least partially responsible for Pato's
accident, having let himself be talked into letting Pato lead, even
though he knew his younger brother wasn't ready for it.
He pursued Luciana while still engaged to Gala, and did not have the
courage to end it until the humiliating balk during his and Gala's
first civil wedding ceremony. He betrayed Luciana (and mother Paz)
by not waiting until their religious wedding to consummate the
marriage. He further betrayed his young bride by believing Gala and
Roselena's ugly assertions about Luciana's work at the Inferno. He
let the divorce go through without fighting enough to repair the
damage and maintain the marriage.
A drunken revenge sex coupling with Gala led to her pregnancy and an
ugly second civil ceremony after his divorce from Luciana.
And he's still with the witch, while sneaking around to visit Luciana
with empty promises of comfort, and dangerous stolen kisses.
Where Rodrigo will end up on his journey is a puzzle. But we're
nearing the end of this story, so we soon will know. At episode's
end we hear him tenderly promising his newborn that one day she'll be
able to play with her brother and have lots of fun. The baby is
gurgling happily in her huge crib, while in the next scene, we see
little Rodrigo/Mateo, wrapped up in a scruffy blanket, sleeping
peacefully beside don Chelo. Which baby is better off? Hard to say
at this point.
Incidental scenes:
Aldo
gets together with Lorenzo and Fabian, toting soft drinks, chuckling
when he hears about the brouhaha with Boris. Nevertheless, they
wonder cynically why he's there-- “Surely not to talk business at
this hour of the night.” Aldo protests that he's offended. Can't
he just show up out of simple friendship? And what's more, how about
going out for a hamburguesa?
The boys agree, but insist they'll pay their own way.
Is Aldo the good friend and generous investor he pretends to be?
Probably not yet. Aldo's spiritual journey in this one involves a
lot of hidden agendas, and light-hearted but larcenous plans to get
rich quick. Since he's Connie's son, we hope he'll eventually decide
to return to school and then make an honest, if somewhat modest
living. Again, time will tell.
Claudio
sees don Geronimo at the office and suggests they get together the
next day for lunch. Is he pursuing his investigation of Pedro Campos
, the mysterious complice
who forged his signature on the fraudulent papers? The previews seem
to indicate this is the case and that he does learn of Campos'
relationship with Max.
At any rate, Claudio's journey is still unclear. He's survived his
unjust incarceration, loss of his beloved wife and the seeming loss
of his daughter for 20 years without bitterness. (Hard to believe.
This guy is a saint!)
He's still on the trail of the criminals involved and is determined
to help protect his daughter and find his missing grandson. Whether
or not his journey will involve new love and fulfillment is still up
in the air. But Miss Melissa is indeed a juicy plum just waiting to
be picked.
Previews:
Claudio finds
out about Maximino's accomplice. Roselena learns that Vicky is her
husband's mistress. Luciana begins her active quest to find her baby
son.

Poor Matteo always crying his poor little lungs out.
I thinks it's borderline torture having the baby in so many scenes and crying 90% of the time.
And what about that RICKETTY RICKETTY box of a stroller Matteo is subjected to. The Chicken Coup wire as headboard worries me. And the thought that the top heavy contraption could topple at any moment has me scringing with anxiety as it definitely looks Unbalanced

Does Gala own the magazine she works on? Even if she does it's a bit presumptuous to think that the public is interested in her marriage and private life vs that of political wives, actresses, models, or musicians.
Whom we never see her hang with.

Judy- A wonderful theme and a perfect time to reflect on the evolution (or devolution) of our characters. I got chills when Gala asked "What niña?" Wow! Simply unbelievable.
Poor little Mateo does looked scared of Chelo. Perhaps it's the shaggy beard?

Judy- What a supurb recap. Wonderful. I love how you tell the story of the character's journies.
So love Conny and Oscar, and I don't think they will ever break up. Roselena is so WRONG about this one. Conny and Oscar were made for each other, all the love and joy they have is wonderful to see.
Love the girls Vio, Serena and Velia opening the car wash and having Padre Honesto coming to bless the bidness, that was wonderful. Couldn't stand that Boris showed up. I wish he an Lulu would just go away already. Glad Polo and Fabian had Lorenzo's back.
Gagme is so full of herself. Like taking those pics, with the Champagne Queen in the back ground will make any difference in how Rod feels. He will never love her although I love how unconditionally he loves his daughter. I hope they keep the name of Alexia. It is very pretty.
Poor Luci she does look all done in, but little by little she will get her backbone back, especially after those advances. It looks like she is finally getting it back.
As far as Rod's journey, I think he is at sixes and sevens. So much has happened in such a short period of time, I don't think he is dealing with things well at all. He can't seem to decide what he should do. He still can't stand Gagme, loves Alexia, and does love little Roddy, but I notice he isn't actively looking for his son. All the P.I.'s they have hired haven't found a thing, and I think Luci has a good idea to look for herself.
I can't beleive Gagme or Champagne Queen won't pick up Alexia but Carolla, the partying friend does. I wonder if Carolla has any kids, they never said. She is really good with Alexia.
So now we know a bit more about Don Chelo, but not why he started drinking. It looks like he came from a good family, and if he only knew what he said was so true about Mateo being stolen from his mother's arms. How prophetic!
Pato continues to be so strong and I love that about him. He is such a good support to Luci, I wish Rod would get a clue about that. Maybe down the road.

Judy, it's so interesting to have a recap that sums up to date the qualities and unfolding paths of the characters. Reading it, I let go of the emotions I'm carrying toward them and look at them from above. It's renewing at this, imo, tired point in Refugio.
I can't 'feel' Rod and Luci anymore. Your summary of Rod, and all of them, is spot on. But Rod especially is a disappointment. Eventually, since he's the galan, I'm expected to forgive him all his weakness and wavering and buy into el amor verdadero between Rod and Luci, but what can he do after all he hasn't done to show the kind of character that will raise him again in this viewer's eyes. It's like HE'S forgotten Luci, he wavers so much. And since when is work more important than mounting a search for your missing baby, ummm, Rod and Claudio and Max. Even Pato is MIA when it comes to the bebe. But that's the writing now. When Melissa, all sparkly eyed, was saying to Luci, 'you know about amor verdadero,' and Luci repeats the phrase in this rueful voice, well that's about where the magnetism between those two former lovers is now. I guess Rod is kinda dead to me and he may never resusitate. I loved the previews when Luci goes all gutteral-Tina-Turner about the bebe she's lost ... well you go Mama 'cause no he-man in your life is gonna do it for you.
And on a lighter, style note ... I noticed yesterday that Rod, Aldo AND Oscar all had the scruffy shadow, almost a beard that seems to be the manly trend. I don't really love it on Rod but it's too much when the three of them show up all shadowed. Must have been a new stylist on the set.

As always Judy, you offer so much more than a recap of the story but a brilliant something extra. This analysis of our major characters was not only spot on, but gave us some food for thought as we reach the end. Was amazing.

Which worries me still with Pato. His future is so perplexing to figure out and leaves me nervous. CL as well. The thought that the writers could do something to either or both and leave Luce only w/ Mr. Universe actually bothers me. Sorry.....
And I have to also thank you Judy for filling in the Chela scenes. I'll be honest, I can't watch those anymore. I'm not good watching a baby constantly crying...I was one of those mothers who never left her baby to cry. Well, when you have twins, you pounce. One cries, you better answer or you've got two going. But still...it does nasty things to my heartstrings.

Judy, your shrewd insight, amazing writing and wry wit elevated this recap into the stratosphere. "The vacuity of her life is underscored by the total absence of background music. She lives and moves in utter silence..." and "A few also including the alleged grandmother (but call me Julie not abuela!) posing provocatively on the couch behind the pseudo-happy parents" were just several of many phrases that mesmerized me.
The vocabulary (embedded and list) and dicho were excellent. What's better than sopping up these fantastic phrases?

Good morning everybody....thanks for all those kind comments and for your wise observations about our story and our characters. Like you, I am feeling very frustrated right now. "Move this story forward". Indeed Anon!
I can also tell everyone is as distressed with that frightened baby crying as I am (Daisynjay...I too pounced whenever my babies cried...I wanted them to grow up knowing there was a kind and loving response to their distress...so that they in turn would grow up to be confident, kind human beings.
And Vivi...I also think it's that wretched beard that's scaring little Mateo. And wouldn't you know, don Chelo smashed him right into it when he held him. Idiot! ('Scuse me...got a little carried away there.)
Diana...yes, indeed...what's going on in Brigida's feverish brain. She reminds me a little bit of that Dickens character, Uriah Heap, who was servile and overhelpful, but simmered with resentment and vengeance underneath. Okay by me...as long as the vengeance is wreaked on Roselena and Gala!

AMOR...I always get a kick out of your exclamation comments. And I too was struck by Violeta's Amazonian stance defending her car wash. Actually it made me think of don Aquiles...I can see him taking that position to protect his "territory" also. Wide stances are typically male.
Violeta is the product of two strong-willed feisty people (even if we think don A. is despicable).

I suppose it might be boring if that was all there was...but I sure could use an expansion of their happy scenes right now.

We have 25 more episodes to go, and we're right in the midst of the period where they expanded this tn to please the corporate execs who wanted to keep making money. I have a feeling the torture of our heroine is going to go on till the bitter end.
I hadn't seen any ads in this tn (refreshing) until last night when they had a very subtle ad (like in the US) when a Miller Lite truck was in the background as Lor, Fab and Aldo spoke, then it drove off. I'm not sure if the sodas Aldo brought them might have also been something being advertised, but once again it was so subtle that I couldn't tell for sure. Very different than having 20 bags of Tostitos/Tostachos in one kitchen, or having someone excitedly talk about the virtues of a certain chicken stock. :)

But in any case, they do have their limits whereas it seems neither RE or Gala do.
And as far as the chickenwire around baby Rod is concerned, it seems the box/stroller/carrier is simpler now than it used to be, i thought what i saw early on was more of those thin metal looking xmas garland strings rather than chicken wire, but i could be wrong.

me too, especially last night when he was telling Mati and Jorge (therapist) that he would not be satisfied until he got to walk and he was more than willing to take risks to get there... ouch!... anvil alert.

As for the love between Rod and Luci having dimmed, this is not surprising to me. Luci has more important things to worry about right now, and Rod can offer her NOTHING-- not even a reliable shoulder to cry on. He has a wife and a child elsewhere. If he were to finally free himself of that wife, then maybe he could rekindle the feelings Luci had for him and rebuild something stronger. But he continues to be paralyzed by making hard life choices-- like divorcing Gala.
Rod has already asked for forgiveness on his knees for the way he treated Luci. She forgave him and they've moved on from that. That's not the issue anymore. The issue is that he's not free, and she's not spending her time thinking about that or mooning over him. I'm fine with that. There'll be time for romance once he's really free, once he's become a stronger man, and once they have their child back.

VIDA2...Sorry, I missed your kind comment. Sorry also to hear that the English CC's suck. Sometimes the Spanish ones do also. They say that 75% at least (maybe more) of communication is in tone of voice, facial expression and body stance,but I sure need words as well...in any language. Glad our recaps are helpful and glad you're part of our therapy group.

She is so "put together" on the outside, and so ugly and twisted on the inside. Powerful, disturbing character. I think a lot of us are hoping she gets the nod for "best villain" in the awards ceremonies.

YOLA...my goodness, thanks. I always worry when I do theme recaps, that it will disappoint readers who prefer a scene by scene arrangement (something I enjoy reading also).
But my mind doesn't work that way when I write...I need to find a way to organize it in my head before I can put pen to paper, so to speak. Perhaps because I'm a bit ADD and sometimes the rapid back and forth of the scenes makes it difficult to find my footing.

UA...meant to ask you, probably should have written last night...but can you identify the opera theme that was playing last night when don Chelo was telling Mateo the story of his life. It was SO familiar, and yet I couldn't place it.
Judy- I think the song playing in the background with Don Chelo was O Sole Mio. It sure sounded like that. Love that song.

One of the issues I have with this story in general is that it show that men are basically useless and it seems to lean in the direction of Luci being better off without Rodrigo. I personally hate the single-mother-is-better-off mindset because I think that (barring abuse) a child is better off with two parents.

I was remembering Frigida talking about an empty childhood and it struck me what if Frigida is Don C's sister. They have similar coloring and how ironic that he would be the one caring for Rod and Luci's child.
Rod is the usual feckless galan but he needs to step up to the plate and be a man. It annoys me that he doesn't seem to be more actively looking for his son. Max and Claudio appear to be using their resources in the search and seem more concerned than Rod. I hated his counterpart in the prior version through most of the last third of the story but he at least was always consistent in his love for Luci and earned her by the end. This Rod just comes across as one of those types who gives lip service to his OTL but is on to the next new thing. He is so not a multi-tasker like Luci is and unless he makes some major changes i don't want him to end up with Luci. She deserves better.
Twenty five episodes may seem like a lot but there is plenty of story to be told without cramming in extra stuff like extensions usually do. The writers have always moved at a steady pace without rushing the story or throwing in a load of time fillers (unless you count some of the Het Het hi jinks). We need a resolution to the Max fraud story and that looks like we are going to see more of tonight. We need to advance or end the teen Lor/Jana romance, punishment for Gagme and Rosa. a divorce for Rod, good things for Pato, an end to the Vi/Magda/ Don A story, good riddance to Lastra, and of course finding the baby. With this much time my guess is a leap forward in time before finding the baby and reconciling him with his mother and father. It would be too easy if Luci found him in the next couple of days. Unfair but then we would be saddled with TN stupidity.

I guess I don't have as much of an issue with the inference that Luce could be ok as a strong single parent. I'm one, and yes it was difficult and sometimes the stress of realizing "your're it" financially can be numbing. But circumstances can sometimes make this a reality, and I don't think it's wrong to let young women know that you can be strong and do it, that your kids will be loved and successful if you find yourself as the sole parent, for whatever reason.
In this TN, Luce has a wonderful support network as well, and that can make the experience more positive. I had my dad around until the twins were 11, and a better male role model couldn't be asked for. Two loving parents-absolutely ideal, but I like the idea to show a woman, or a man, successfully raise their kids alone if that is their circumstance.

I was hoping you'd address this question, Daisynjay, since I know you've raised two fine young men. I would think the "you're it" financially would be overwhelming. You expressed it very well when you said "numbing".
But so glad you had your father there during the early years...and wish he were still with you now. We never stop missing our beloved parents, do we?
Also, I am aware, that in Hispanic countries, the extended family IS very important in raising children. They don't seem to get quite as "nuclear" as we do. All the better, since parenting requires so much energy and input.

I'm afraid that what will make Rod take action will be learning, maybe in pieces, that the 3W's stole the baby. That's be too late, really. Throughout this long pregnancy stretch, Rod has chosen loyalty to Gala or "tradition, marriage and family" over Luci. He even knows that his mother and Gala were aware that Luci was pregnant and pushed him into a loveless marriage. Yet he's not infuriated enough by that manipulation to stand up to Gala on Luci's behalf, and to be honest with his own love. I say he's dead to me but I want him to rise from the dead and DO SOMETHING REALLY MEANINGFUL for Luci and especially now for their baby. Well, next week is Dia del Muertos and All Saints Day so maybe His Royal Deadness will start to stir. Jeez, already.

Extensions get on my last nerve because they compromise the quality of the series. I also have issues with Rod's stagnation in getting away from Gala and getting back in the search for his missing son.
It would be interesting if Chelo turned out to be Frigida's brother. They will both be confounded at such a discovery.

Well, we don't even have two months left with our story, so they can't draw the torture out for that long. :)
Glad they can't draw things out too much longer. I was afraid they'd throw in some chula to cause problems with Connie and Oscar, but they have too many other things to solve.

That WAS a fun exchange, KELLY, when Fabian was ribbing Lulu. Most of the time I can't understand half of what he says, but I followed that verbal goading with no problem whatsoever.

Thank you Judy, for your original format. It gives us a welcome break from the straight scene-by-scene translation (of which I am guilty).
I enjoyed the Boris confrontation greatly.
Am I the only one rooting for the Melissa/Claudio paring? There have been many May-December romances that have worked (my DIL's sister and her professor husband). Mel & Clau both have the same temperment, same outlook on life and do look sweet together.
I loved Oscar's welcoming gesture with open arms to Conny. I wish them well. Note to Conny: Stay away from RE--she'll poison your well of happiness.
Don Chelo's scenes were getting old for me, until he got out the picture of his mother. Brigida? Maybe. I'd like to see his sister turn out to be Juli or Roselena. We know RE came from a family with enough means to send her to college, but not to provide her mouth with silver spoons. As for Juli, it would just serve her right--two boozers in a pea pod.
How many bottles of booze he had around. Yes, the fact they most all had liquid in them was just for effect. A serious alcoholic would have finished them all except the last one. He had a fortune in liquor there, at least one of those bottles would buy Mateo formula and diapers for a few more days.

Hi CLARA...is it a dreary Wednesday where you are? Here in Columbus it's an incredible blue-sky Indian Summer day...at any rate, glad I brightened things up. I guess I was trying to brighten myself up as well...lots of sad things going on around me in real life, in addition to the drama of this story.

Forgot about the birds as RL was walking around all alone. I was surprised to hear them. I thought they'd be able to sense the impending doom of the house and would leave. Or be chased off by Rosalena because of all that horrible racket and bird poo. Just can't see her abiding either of those things.
