Weekend Discussion: Las Primeres Actrizes; Grandes Damas de Televisa

As I did a few weeks ago with the mature gentlemen who populate our favorite tales about love, hate, and the seven deadly sins, here I will present the great ladies of same.  Since this will be a handful of them presented in the same manner, I will do the same as before starting with the youngest of these fine actresses and age them in reverse:

Julissa (b. 1944):

We are currently seeing her in comic mode in Porque el Amor Manda as the cartoonishly bitchy Susanna:

However, in 1981 she vamped it up as Rita in Colorina:

She was the good sister, Monica, in the 1966 Corazon Salvaje:

w/Enrique Lizalde as Juan del Diablo
Helena Rojo (b. 1944):

Most recently we saw her as the intelligent though addled Eugenia in Por Ella Soy Eva:

She is elegant in every period of history we have ever seen her in, starting here with Amor Real (2003) as Augusta:

In 2000's Ramona as the heroine's (step)mother:

As Inez in 1972's Aguirre the Wrath of God she looked like a great artist's painting:

I couldn't find a date for these glamourous shots, but they deserve inclusion:

They don't shoot photos like this anymore.

Jacqueline Andere (b. 1938)

We last saw her as the demanding and controlling mother of Fernando Colunga in Soy tu Dueña:

In 1994 she was the wife of Porfiorio Diaz in El Vuelo del Aguila:

In 1982 she was Ana Maria in Quiereme Siempre:

In 1971 she had the title role of Yesenia:

She was Aimee in the 1966 Corazon Salvaje:

A gratuitous glamour shot of unknown vintage:

Maria Rubio (b. 1934)

She must have been in the running for Mujeres Asesinas (whatever happened to that great series?):

She was the manipulative Hortensia in Querida Enemiga in 2008:

Her most iconic role --  por supuesto -- was as Catalina Creel in 1986's Cuna de Lobos:

What a contrast to Clemencia in 1981's El Derecho de Nacer:

Finally, as Ami in 1980's Colorina:

w/Maria Teresa Rivas at left

Marga Lopez (1924-2005)

Her last performance was as Esther in 2005's Bajo la Misma Piel:

In 1998 she was the highly toxic Ana Joaquina in El Privilegio de Amar:

Who would know from that role that she had once played supremely good women during the early golden age of Mexican cinema:

Finally, two early glamour shots:

That's it for now; there will be more at a later date.

Thanks for doing this! It is quite the education for those of us who are new to the genre.

Wow Urban...another slam dunk for you (sorry, I'm knee deep in March Madness). Enjoyed this so much, especially the shots of Helena Rojo whose acting I have always admired. She's beautiful now. And absolutely a knockout in her younger days. What a treat. Thanks.

I've always thought Helena Rojo was a classic Spanish beauty. I didn't seen any shots of her in a mantilla with a fan, but that would be such a marvelous image of her.

I love the old portrait photos of these older actresses when they were young. It bugs me that nobody seems to do photos like that anymore.

This is such fun. I agree Helena Rojo is still elegant and beautiful but she was a real knockout as a young woman. As was Julissa. that's a steamy photo you dug up.

UA - Thanks for the lively history and vintage pics. I enjoyed Helena Rojo in Eva and CS 09.

Great pics Urban! These ladies really were so beautiful in the prime, and most still are lookers. Helena Rojo's vintage pic was my favorite.

Thank you so much Urban. All of your extra work on the weekends is really, truly appreciated.

Urban:

Thanks so much for this gallery of photos. I too love the ones of Helena Rojo. And you are so right Urban, they don't take pictures like that anymore. The one of Helena Rojo with the lighter hair almost looks like Aracely Arambula. I had to do a double take.

Really? Aracely Arambula is unlikely to look as good when she gets to Helena Rojo's present age (she doesn't have the cheekbones).

I have a rare book of photo portraits of famous people by famous photographers. The photos are all in black and white and go back as far as Abe Lincoln. Real thought was in those photographs. The photographers of the 40s and 50s who did actors' head shots were the last of their kind.

UA...you give so much to this blog and its readers. You are an incredible gem!

I LOVED the Helena Rojo pictures. What a beautiful woman. The one of Julissa is beautiful, too.

These women seem to have retained so much of their beautiful looks. One always wonders if they had a little help along the way. Not being critical, but if they didn't, then they are a reminder that women can look beautiful at any age.

Case in point: the 90 or so year old wife of one of the members of Sweden's royalty recently passed away. They showed a picture of her in her late 80s. She looked like nothing had been "done" to her face. She looked incredibly beautiful and regal (and had been a "commoner"...such a word) before she married her prince).

Every woman should have a picture taken of themselves just like that last black and white photo you showed of Helena Rojo. That was just simply gorgeous!!!

Thank you, thank you, UA!!!

These are beautiful. Thanks, UA.

Great photos, Urban. My first novela was El Privilegio de Amar, with both Helena Roja and Marga Lopez. Marga was absolutely terrifying as Ana Joaquina.

Thanks for the photos of the Grandes Damas/ Las Primeras Actrizes. It's interesting how actors pass through different catagories in the tn titles as they age and become well known and loved professionals. Didn't know Julissa was such a beauty though Helena Rojo is stunning at any age. In the one photo Jacqueline Andere actually resembles her daughter Chantal Andere so it is easier to see how they are related. Thanks again.

UA: I have three large sized hardcover books with publicity stills of the golden age of Hollywood. You would drool.

One year, not too long ago, they had an exhibition of George Hurrell's photos at the Queen Mary in Long Beach, CA. Unfortunately, I was unable to go during it's entire stay--and I live just a short hop on the freeway away. Ugh!.

What fun! Thank you!

I know you wrote ''actrizes'' on purpose, like when we say ''sorpresados'', but picture #2 is not Julissa, but Lucía Méndez...
was that also on purpose to see if we were paying attention? LOL

No, it wasn't; chances are it was incorrectly labeled. I don't do stuff like that.

Though posting late, thanks so much UA. ITA they don't photograph people like that anymore.
