Qué Pobres, Weds 4/30/14 (#82): Daddy Issues. The Big Book. Blind Man's Bluff.

Miguel Angelo (MA) and Saul and Tomás
MA meets with Saul at their new hangout, the Popular Café. Saul has the paperwork for the house, as well as the "proof" Mini found earlier on Ahole. MA explains that he's giving the house to the Menchacas because it was his mother who stole the 300 thousand pesos. (He didn't tell Saul that before?)

MA tells Saul he's sure that Bambi hasn't incriminated him. Bambi wasn't even sure who he was. Ah, here comes Tomás. Saul is miffed to have been replaced by what he assumes is a backward, inexperienced youngster and tries to intimidate him: not all of these documents are in Spanish, so you won't understand them. Some of the files are encrypted. Etc. Tom says that's no problem. He's got resources, all kinds of people to help him, including a really good hacker. Ha!

Saul warns MA that once the Menchacas get the deed to the house, they'll kick the rest of the RPs out.

Tom reveals that (I think) he has contacts at the police department too, who say Bambi hasn't incriminated MA.

Mini and Mom
With a kitchen knife and a screwdriver, Mini and Isela finally gain entry to Alejo's (Ahole's) private office, which he's been locking lately. Mini has no problem getting into the safe with the very memorable date of Don Aureliano's death: October 31! Inside, they find only a journal filled with names and numbers. Mini is disappointed because she doesn't know what they mean, but she knows they're important and (I think) guesses that some of them are passwords.

On the other hand, Isela is disgusted. She thinks the book is useless. She shakes it open, hoping some money will fall out.

They decide to put the book back in the safe, and get a locksmith to make them a key to get into the room. Mini will use her new job at the editorial to find out what those names and numbers mean.

Domestic Scenes
Once again, Mati is looking around the house for she-doesn't-know-what. She knows they're papers, but she tells Chuy she's not sure what kind of papers, or why she needs them.

They reminisce about old times. Chuy misses the fame and acclaim of his wrestling days. He misses his friends and his wife and Mati's husband. He (Don Aureliano) was always worrying that his grandsons wouldn't grow up to be nice boys. Mati says MA is the only one who turned out any good. (Chuy doesn't mention the theft MA confessed to.) Chuy says it's the same with him; Lupita turned out okay, but the other two have their heads in the clouds and don't want to do any real work. Mati exclaims, "I thought only rich people worried about that!" Chuy says kid problems are the same for everyone.

Later, in the penthouse, Mati and Frida mock Ana Sofia's plans for Leo to marry into "royalty." In fact, she wants Leo to call Macarena and try to have the wedding even sooner!

Emiliano and Lupita
Speaking of kid problems...

Ahole tells Emiliano, "my long-lost son is... YOU!"

Now I have a flashback to The Empire Strikes Back, when Vader tells Luke he's his father. How does Luke respond? "That's not true! It's impossible!!"

Emiliano replies to Ahole: "That's not true!" He wants to know why Ahole is only just finding him now.

Ahole says he didn't know of Emil's existence until recently. Probably Emil's mom thought it was for the best, or maybe (what a manipulative sneak he is) she just wanted to keep all of Emil's love for herself. "After all these years, she never told US. But that's not my fault, and it's not your fault, SON!"

(gag, retch)

The principal comes by to check on them, and in the next scene we see her watching from a discreet distance - I suppose to reassure us that she isn't as irresponsible as we think she is due to her previously irresponsible behavior.

Ahole gives Emiliano a smart phone so he can call his Daddy any time. (But no charger, LOL. Let's see how long the battery lasts.) Again, he asks Emil not to tell his mom about the phone or any of this. "I will tell her later myself," Ahole promises. Ahole is, of course, #1 on the speed dial. He shows it to Emiliano: "What does that say?"

"Papa"? Emiliano reads from the phone's screen.

Emiliano is unusually solemn on the way home from school. As promised, however, Lupita tells him his origin story:

I was very young. He was my first boyfriend. He was "mas grande" than I. [Richer? More experienced? I assume she is not referring to his height.] We were in love; we had plans. But something happened that I didn't like. You could say it was a misunderstanding, but we fought, and we broke up. It doesn't really matter what it was now, because it was for the best. He was a businessman, so who knows how we would have ended up if we'd stayed together. But recently, he looked for me, and now he wants to meet you.

Emiliano asks Lupita if she wants him to meet his father. She replies, "What's more important is what you want." She explains that Ahole didn't look for Em sooner because he didn't even know the boy existed. She never told him. "It was wrong, but I thought it was best. I never wanted to hurt you."

Emiliano asks the big question: "Why is it that you can tell lies, but I'm not supposed to?" Lupe says she's guilty of making a bad decision, and she's sorry.

Emiliano says he's not mad at her. That's a big weight off her shoulders. He also affirms that he does want to meet his father. She asks him to give her some time to arrange it. That cheers him up.

MA just happens to show up. Emiliano gives them some space while MA holds Lupita's hand and she cries. Emiliano looks at his new phone and tries to process all the events of the day.

Carmelita calls to warn Lupita that Nepo is at the fonda. Lupita asks her to keep Chuy away from Nepo while she hurries home. MA wants to help; he feels that since he's taken responsibility for paying back the money, Nepo should deal with him and not Lupe. Or at any rate she shouldn't have to face Nepo alone.

Lupe starts to protest, but MA insists, "we're still novios!" She makes an impatient noise and turns away, but we see her smiling!

Bambi, Adolfo, and Ahole
The Detectives Gomez inform Bambi that he'll be transferred to prison tomorrow. They can make his life easier if he'll tell them about his accomplices.

They ask him about Adolfo. Bambi admits to having done some business with him from time to time. But he doesn't react to MA's name and won't even confirm if that was his driver. They don't believe him. "My mother taught me not to lie," Bambi says to Jennifer. "A lie would be like, 'Hi Officer Gomez, don't you look pretty today! You look just like a model!'" The Detectives Gomez are not amused.

Someone brings them a report that says there's no evidence that Adolfo has left the country yet. (Very interesting that they never tried to confirm the same for MA.)

Emiliano is still looking at his new phone in the park while Ahole gloats with Wilma at the office. He shows off the puppydog eyes and quivering voice he used to impress his son. His phone rings and he's sure it's his boy, but in fact it's Adolfo. "I gave you 30 thousand DOLLARS to leave town," Ahole complains. Adolfo says the authorities are all waiting for him and they'd nab him if he showed his passport anywhere. "Be more inventive," Ahole suggests. Adolfo says they have to meet at Ahole's house. "And you'd better not call the police, because I will take you down with me."

But Ahole can't leave right away, because someone is blocking his way: Agent Jennifer Gomez (he previously met after he, er I mean a gang of thugs, shot him in the pants). She's got some questions for him!

Nepo
Gwendy insists to Nepo that she doesn't know who "Angel Ruizpalacios" is, but he figures he must be related to Ahole. He tries to get Gwendy to call the RP Editorial to try to track him down. She doesn't want them to see the number of her salon on their caller ID. She tries to talk Nepo out of pursuing this: "If you love something, set it free." She encourages him to try meeting someone else, hint hint. Nope, Nepo says, there's no one else like Lupita. But eventually she relents and makes the call. They want to know who's asking for Mr. Ruizpalacios. Nepo grabs the phone and hungs up. Now he's madder than ever.

Later, he and Gwendy are outside the fonda, and he's still going on about how Lupita can get Ahole and/or Angel (not sure which) to pay off that big loan for her. Gwendy reminds him, "SHE'S NOT YOURS!!" "But I wuuuuuuvs her," he whines. "That doesn't give you any right to her, don't you get it?" Gwendy argues. "Don't you get it? You're blind! I won't help you, you blockhead!"

Lupita is still at the park with MA and Emiliano, but Nepo tells Carmelita he won't leave until he's seen Lupita. Carm discreetly places a call to Lupita.

When Lupita, Emiliano, and MA get to the fonda, Carmelita takes Emiliano to his room or the kitchen or someplace. Nepo hands Lupita a bill. It's not only the entire debt, but interest as well - at a rate even higher than Sharky's. MA protests that this is not the proper way to do business. "Okay then, you all can deal with my lawyer." (Wonder if his lawyer is Tomas too!) Business is business, he repeats. MA wants to pay off the debt with his juice business.

But now there's a more urgent problem: Chuy's home. And he's not glad to see MA in his house YET AGAIN.

Next Time: Ahole is charged with money laundering. Nepo wants to know why his good friend Mike didn't tell him that he knows the guy Lupita is in love with.

Sorry for the delay... I'm running a bit late, but I'm starting the recap now.

I really don't like that even after learning the truth from Lupe, Emi is still keeping Alejo's attentions a secret. He's a thoughtful kid, so I still have hope that he's just taking his time to process the info his mom just gave him.

Why are Lupe and Carm trying to protect Nepo by not letting Chuy know he's calling in the loan? First of all, Nepo deserves a smack down and dressing down from Chuy. And second, this is Chuy's mess. He's the one who went against Lupe's wishes and got the loan from Nepo, when she was uncomfortable mixing up money matters with her romantic relationship, precisely for this reason. Let Chuy handle HIS Nepo mess.

IMO, I don't want Chuy involved in the Lupe/Nepo issue. If Chuy finds out all Nepo would accept other than payment is for Lupe to be his girlfriend again, he might find a way to coerce Lupe. Since if Lupe accepts Nepo back, Chuy would be able to keep Lupe away from MA.

LOVED LOVED that MA told Lupe that no matter what she said to him, in his mind THEY ARE STILL NOVIOS!! (and no, that is not pulling a trick out of Nepo's bag, there is no pressure there. just look at her face when he said it... she had to turn away from him but she was sooo glad.)

Chuy was ALSO the guy who wanted to take the loan from Sharky. I don't think Lupita wanted any part of that either.

And someone needs to tell Nepo he's kind of treating Lupita like a whore or at best, like property. Like he traded 50 goats to Lupita's father to have her hand in marriage and now he wants his goats back.

and to the writers... PLEASE don't go into the plotline of Nepo being 'available and willing' to marry Lupe whereas MA can't/wouldn't right now given his current 'running from the law' situation.

Lupe would tell Chuy to go jump in a lake if he tried to pressure her to date Nepo. She's not that kind of heroine (*cough*, Monse in Robo). I'm not worried about her caving to anyone's pressure, other than Alejo's, because she would do anything for her son.

If Lupita finds out about the grandfather clause the wrong way (i.e. hearing it from anyone except MA, and even then the timing would matter a lot), she will assume that it's the only reason MA wanted to be with her. THAT might drive her back into Nepo's stupid arms.

The night she agreed to be Nepo's girlfriend, she was motivated somewhat by spite. Just think how spiteful she'll feel about the grandfather clause.

Not sure why Lupe would jump to that conclusion. To fulfill that particular clause, MA can marry and impregnate whomever he wants. Alejo, however, is now out of choices and Emi is it for him.

I've posted about half the recap. The other half will have to wait, maybe as long as after lunch. :(

I agree with you Vivi, but i believe if she hears it from Alejo and he paints it as a competition between MA and himself, and feeds her lies about MA only wanting her FOR THE CLAUSE, look what he did to MINI!. Alejo could manipulate the situation to get that radical reaction from her, after all the last thing Alejo wants is for Lupe to ALSO have a kid with MA and MARRY HIM instead of Alejo so he is the first one interested in building walls between Lupe and MA.

MA can marry and impregnate whomever he wants, yes, but Lupita might think (or Ahole could convince her) that MA chose HER to get back at Ahole for stealing MA's ex.

I'd like to think she wouldn't believe it, but when one is feeling hurt and confused, it's a little easier to get them to believe the worst.

Julie, I think A-hole had pre-programmed his cell phone number into the cell phone he gave Emiliano and showed him the address/phone list, and pointed specifically at one A-hole wanted Emiliano to notice. Emiliano just read 'Papa' out of the phone, i don't think he was meaning to call A-hole 'Papa'. He was certainly confused after he read it looking at A-hole. That is why later on we see Alejo telling Vilma that he expects Emiliano to call him any moment, but to his susprise, the one that calls him is Adolfo.
Also, I don't think the woman who approached them was the principal. I believe it was Emiliano's teacher herself (the one who talks to Lupe when she picks him up, if it were the principal she would not have been staring so suspiciously and asked them 'is there a problem?' when she got to them) so she might or might not know about Alejo from the principal. The teacher might alert Lupe that Emiliano has been talking to A-hole (or to a man and describe him which is the same) unless she has been vowed to silence by the principal.

Julie, thanks for a great recap! You'll finish it when you
finish it. :)

Vivi you are so right about this being Chuy's mess because Lupe did not want a loan mixed up with her relationship with Nepo. She made that clear early on.

I also did not like that Emiliano is still lying by omission to his mother. Seeing Alejo make fun of Emiliano and his reactions to his father as he recounted the scene to Vilma was really sad. With the music and their cackling the scene gave me that "fairy tale feeling" again which made it bearable.

AS is back to her Italian ways. Yesterday she said she needed a "testa" fria--cold head-- to think; today she was calling Lupe "Porca"hontas.

Nepo showed himself to be a real lout barging into the fonda and then into the Menchaca's living quarters looking for Lupita. The worst was when he pushed Tizoc out of the way. I was hoping Tizoc would pop him one but he was too surprised. :(

Most probably Minerva and Isela have hit the jackpot with that "triste libreta" they found in the safe but just don't know it yet. Too bad they just didn't take it or make a copy if it for MA.

Loved the conversation between don Chuy and doña Mati.

I think what Alejo said was 'que dice ahi?' ('what does it say there?', not [que dices?]'what do you say?') trying to get Emiliano to read 'Papa', which he did.

Thanks for the recap!

If Minerva and Isela had brains, they would have taken that notebook and blackmailed Alejo into agreeing to all their terms. But then MA would get screwed.

I don't think they'll go in the direction of Lupe thinking MA was using her based on everything else we've gotten from this novela.

I hope Lupe finds out about Emi and Alejo soon!

Anon 10:33, I hope you're right about Lupita not assuming the worst. It is such a cliche that I can't help expecting it, though.

Marta - thanks for explaining about Emiliano reading "Papa" on the phone. I will fix that when I finish the recap (later).

Also thanks for identifying the teacher. Now I'm not so sure Ahole hasn't been speaking to the teacher all along, just one person or two different people!!

I think Emiliano is keeping Ahole's secret for now because he wants to see what Ahole does and what his mother does. Maybe he's not sure if he can trust either of them. I imagine he's slightly worried that his mother will introduce some other guy as his father, and then he'll REALLY be confused.

I'm so confused! I thought I was doing this recap (so I did) but now I see you did it yesterday Julie. How did you do it before the show aired? Sorry for the duplication.

Oops! I'm sorry! I thought you were starting next week, Jane.

I didn't do it yesterday, though - I only posted a header last night after it aired, around 11:30, and I've only finished half the recap so far this morning.

In any case, I'm VERY glad you're recapping again!

This IS confusing. I do intend to finish the recap later, but you can also read Jane's at http://caraycaray.blogspot.com/2014/05/que-pobres-tan-ricos-april-30-your-blog.html and it probably fills in most all the details I haven't provided yet anyway.

(I have a so-called "live bookmark" of the Pobres recap feed, but Jane's recap isn't showing up on it for some reason even though it appears to be tagged correctly. That's why I posted the URL, else you might not even know it's there!)

I think that the notebook Mini and Isela found may have some incrimating information that may help MA against Alejo. Too bad, they are not seeing it that way as it didn't come with cash attached to it!

Wonder how AS is planning to pay for the wedding, especially now that she wants to bump up the date!

I would likek to humbly request that each character be named with his/her proper name the first time in each post, before you go on to use all the various and sundry nicknames. Otherwise newbies (like me and my son) will have a much harder time. Thank you!

Jane, I don't think we have that many nicknames, i can only think of:
Lupe: AS calls her porca-hontas
MA = Miguel Angel Ruiz Palacios
A-hole = Alejo Ruiz Palacios
Emi = Emiliano
Carm = Carmelita, the friend of the Menchaca family
JT = Jose Tizoc Menchaca
loanshark = the landlord who has been buying things from AS

Does anyone use any other?

Leo = Leonardo RP
AS = Ana Sofia RP
Tom = Tomas the young lawyer friend of the Menchacas
Chila = Chilaquiles, Chuy's friend wrestler
Gwendy = Lupe's friend, Carmela's daughter, the beautician
Nepo = Nepomuceno Escandiondas, el Rey del Platano, pretends Lupe

thanks for the recap Julie.

I am sick of Nepo. He still doesn't believe Lupe would not have him if he were the last man on earth and now he's mad b/c someone "stole" her love. Yet he NEVER had it. It also irks that AP, a great actor is old enough to be Lupe's father, in addition to his ridiculous mindset.

Yes Vivi, Chuy needs to clean up this mess but in doing so you know it will become more messy.

DA = Diego Armando, Nepo's son
Mini = Minerva

Thanks Julie and Jane. I've got one question for dear Nepo. What do you want? Do you want Lupita to be your girlfriend again to avoid you calling in your debt? Do you want her to come back to you for that reason? Think man, think!
I can't see Emi hiding the phone for too long from his family.
So in the avances Nepo asks MA about Angel Ruispalacios.
Jane, the other bad guy is Adolfo, the guy who helped Alejo steal the money from the business.

Sorry (yet again) for the delay. My day got crazy.

But the recap is done now, for what it's worth. And I am looking forward to reading Jane's too. And seeing tonight's episode. Seriously, I can't get enough of this stuff.

I enjoy this show even when it moves slowly. Now it's moving almost too fast!!
