Weekend Discussion: Crimes of Fashion

One of the things inciting constant comment here is the fashion felonies committed by many female characters in novelas (or by the fashion consultants for the shows).  It seems that femme fatale rivals and villanas are the biggest offenders, although heroines can be guilty, too.  For our purposes today we will cover the villanas, particularly since we have such a stunning example in our current prime time.

Graciela Giacinti, vd. de Mendoza of Lo Que la Vida Me Robo is a truly exceptional and egregious case of a serial offender.  For someone who is supposed to be an admiral's wife, she knew nothing whatsoever about how to dress properly:

Brothel wear
Tablecloth skirt?

With that get-up they should kick her out of Manolo Blanik's

An unflattering dress and worse coiffure

60's nightmare?

I dearly hope Daniela Castro gets a good laugh out of her wardrobes in these series.  Una Familia Con Suerte had her in a few strange ones:

Animal prints?  At least she loved her bebe in this tale.
These boots are made for walkin'

On to a few others.  They range from Tacky to Just Plain Evil:

Daniela Paleta in Triunfo del Amor was a pretentious trust-fund brat.  Obviously she never listened to whomever could have told her that scarves with necklaces don't work and berets look stupid on women with long hair like this.

However, I can understand someone being afraid to tell Dona Bernarda that this collar made her look like a latter-day Erzebet Bathory.

Carlota of En Nombre del Amor should also be hung for Purple Abuse:

Sabine Moussier is always rocking the girls no matter what else she's doing:

Finally for today we have Susanna Gonzales always showing the midriff in La Que No Podia Amar:

and her bestie in a truly horrible mullet dress:

UA...I like your play on words...crimes of passion...crimes of fashion.

It is hard for me to think of another villana with worse fashion sense than our very own Gracie. I especially marveled at those lace tablecloths that she was wearing at the beginning not this novela. Perhaps she used up her supply from the linen closet and has changed to the gypsy look she is currently sporting...the one where she seems to open her closet door each morning and tries to see how many of her clothing items she can wear at one time.

The midriff thing gets me, whether it's on a villana or on a heroine. For example, I wanted to watch Apuesta por un Amor on YouTube, because, well, Juan Soler. I had a very strong motivation for watching that show. But I could barely get through a couple of capitulos because the heroine's bare-midriff outfits irritated me so much. It was such a bizarre and incongruous fashion choice that I just couldn't get into the story.

I don't get it. It irritates me as much in TV as the "skin belt" thing did in the real world a few years ago.

While I suppose that Carmina (Sabine Moussier) in Abismo de Pasión could be indicted for a number of fashion crimes, perhaps not the least of which might be lack of age appropriateness, I thought she rocked a distinctive look with those unbuttoned at the top western shirts gathered and tied beneath her plump ripe bubis, the painted on blue jeans, high top cowboy boots with towering heels, that impossible leonine mane, her glow-in-the -dark carrot skin, and the intricate eye make-up surrounding those bottomless blue eyes... Wow... I'm having to fan myself even thinking about it... be still my heart...

Fun topic because lately the clothing on both protagonists and villains has been awful. Its like Televisa and Telemundo are having grade school kids design the things people are wearing. Clothes that are too tight, too low cut, too short and in garish colors that make the head spin. In the last couple of months some of us have seen the exact same dress on characters in Televisa and Telemundo shows most notable a kelly green and pink number. It looked awful on both actresses.

In LI we can barely get through a show without someone mentioning some hideous outfit.
Mariana wears too tight and way too short numbers including one that look like it had been made out of doilies. Raqhell is addicted to cold-shoulder or off the shoulder numbers and hideous wide belts and of course her endless collection of flashy bras. She does have some petty jewelry but she always carries those narrow envelope purses that barely hold a hanky but she had a gun in one.

Decie Girl- RG posted side by side pics of the 4 times the same awful dress appeared in four different tns. See the link: MENTIR PARA VIVIR (Mayrin Villanueva), LO QUE LA VIDA ME ROBO (Angie Boyer), LA IMPOSTORA (Begona Narvaez), and POR SIEMPRE MI AMOR (Tania Lizardo).

Wow. Carlos. You're hired.
Still laughing,

Vivi

Exactly the dress i meant and it looked the worst on Boyer way to shortending just under her butt and too tight over he artificial boobs. LOL

I think Villanueva's dress is shorter than Boyer's. It looks the shortest to me from that picture, followed by Narvaez's.

Agree, Anon 5:46
Actually, Boyer's dress is the longest of those four, reaching all the way down to her knees, while the others' are mid-thigh and higher.

I believe AB is the shortest and the smallest of all the women wearing the dress, so it's no surprise that it came so far down on her. Her unique touch was pulling the neckline down around her shoulders. Mayrin is definitely the shapeliest of the ladies wearing the dress.

We've seen wardrobe pieces being reused in various tns before (the Pear Robe being the most infamous: http://caraycaray.blogspot.com/2011/12/pear-robe-project.html). But never in such quick succession as this dress. I wonder who the designer is? How did they manage to get such an unflattering dress into so many tns, AND across networks? These are just the instances we caught on this blog. It's probably popped up in some Colombian or Brazilian tn too. :)

I remember when Amor Bravio was on, Isadora was a very stylish villain. My personal favorite was the houndstooth coat she donned when bumping off Ximena and Alonso. Ahh houndstooth, perfect for every morbid occasion.

I'll look for some photos of her and make her the star of a future gallery in this particular museum. I think her son also had a fashion fail or two (not many, though) and there was a younger female character with some questionable wardrobe choices.

Yeah. Isadora in Amor Bravio often wore white, metallic, and military inspired fashions. Her son Alonso was always well dressed in a slim fit suit, which made him look ridiculous on a bull ranch. And the young female villain, Ximena looked even more ridiculous on the ranch with her thigh high, super high heeled boots and skin tight, short, rubber band dresses. There was one of these dresses with bright pink and white stripes that was just ridiculous.

Here's a pic of villains Isadora and Ximena in one of her signature outfits: http://tinyurl.com/lhzylnd

Vivi, that's one of my albums!

Well, there you go! You have the pics to remind you of Ximena's crimes against fashion. :)

Vivi:

"Mayrin is definitely the shapeliest of the ladies wearing the dress. "

And her body was also enhanced with a few surgeries :) . I think the dress is supposed to be tight and show off their figures. I don't hate it like Caray seems to do though I don't particularly like it. It reminds me of when I'm studying since I like to use green and pink to create a contrast, I wonder if the person who created this fashing came up with it during a finals week at college.

I remember liking the fashing in Un Gancho al Corazón, especially the way they would dress Coni and Ximena.

In the upcoming La Gata the main character will be dressed in a small dress most of the time. It's ridiculous. I remember in the last two versions the main character would use jeans and a shirt. I remember back in the days when the middle class and poor characters would dress in jeans most of the time. That's more accurate than wearing a dress 24x7, especially if you live in a dump.

Jarocha

Jarocha- If they are dressing Maite in small, and I assume tattered, dresses in La Gata, then they are just following what they did in Corazon Indomable. There were a few Maricruz dresses that left her in danger of showing London and France when she moved around too much.

Yes, indeed. One of the main things that irritated me about that series throughout its run.

Maite had some bad outfits in Mi Pecado but I think CI topped those.

burn the pink & green dress, never to darken a TN again!!

Nikki in Amores Verdaderos wore it as well.

Yikes and I thought seeing two at the same time was bad but five! WTH are the costume designers thinking? It was awful in so many ways. SMH

Nice topic UA,i usually never paid attention to fashion crimes .But i will always remember Rosario and her awful white dress from La Tempestad.

Carlos---I have disagreed with you on several issues in the past but I have to go with you on Sabine Moussier's western wear look---I wouldn't even think about complaining about that. You got it right 100% I watched Abismo
De Pasion and enjoyed Ms. Moussier's outfits immensely. Angelique's doily shorts weren't bad either.
the gringo

Carlos---Thinking back and laughing out loud, the "required 15 minutes" should have been given to Sabine's western attire.
the gringo

Oh sorry, the topic is Crimes of Fashion, and not what we guys enjoy. Well how about that multi colored thing [it was so bad that I have already forgotten what it was] that Nikki wore in AV.
the gringo

Hi gringo,

I've missed our little chats.

"Oh sorry, the topic is Crimes of Fashion, and not what we guys enjoy.

I'm pretty sure they're often one and the same.

Carlos

Gringo- It was a multi-colored fur vest. It looked rainbow roadkill.
