La Sombra Del Pasado #1 Discuss!

Hey patio peeps, sorry for the late recap, for those of you that don't know I have no internet/cable at home so I can't watch the episodes until Tueday mornings, apologies for the delay!

Ok, we start off with two babies being baptized, the first is baby Aldonza (named after her paternal grandmother), her parents are Roberta and Raymundo Alcozer. Roberta is a terribly unhappy woman, it seems like no one in town likes her and she resents the fact that no one other than her sister came to the baptism, everyone in town went to the other baptism for the child whose parents have much more wealth, even the parish priest sent a substitute, so that he could officiate the other ceremony. Roberta is very vocal about her dissatisfaction.

Baby Cristobal Mendoza is being baptized with the whole town watching, his parents are Severiano and Candela Mendoza. Severiano is a wealthy and well respected man and is throwing a huge fiesta in honor of his son, the whole town is there because everyone wants to stay on his good side. Well, almost everyone. You see Roberta is having an affair with him and she thinks it's a good idea to show up at his party unannounced and uninvited. It turns out that was not such a good idea and Severiano has her dragged out of his home, it's a good thing his wife was not there to witness the fireworks.

Candela is a very well put together woman, she makes it clear in a conversation with her cook (main house keeper?) Dominga that she dislikes Roberta because she thinks the woman is vulgar and that men can't keep their eyes off of her, even her husband has been giving her the eye!

Dominga later talks to her husband and tells him that she is going to go visit the new baby, it is not her fault that people dislike her mother and she says the baby is not treated as unfairly as her mother has been.

Staying at the ranch are Prudencia and her husband (sorry, I did not catch his name), her husband is Candela's cousin and also the godfather of the new baby, he is a doctor who probably did something really bad because he needs to get the heck out of his pueblo fast! He tells Severiano that he could use his support when he opens his new clinic, and let's Severiano know that he knows how to "repay" favors done for him, Severiano tells him he will have his support when he moves into town and opens his new clinic.

Adelina and Ray are having a talk about Roberta, he tells her that Roberta is having a hard time adjusting to the town and to being a mother, since the baby was born she has had zero time to herself.

Roberta comes home and argues with Ray, she is tired of being poor and being treated like trash by the town people, she goes as far as taking her sister out for a walk so that she can see how awful people are to her, and they are mean but then she is ranting like a lunatic. She says that everyone in town thinks her husband is a saint and far too good for a woman like her, Adelina is surprised at the reaction her sister gets from people and wonders out loud what she did in order for them to treat her so poorly.

Candela and Prudencia are talking about a place Prudencia has heard about, Prudencia says she really wanted to visit the place and see the waterfall which she has heard is beautiful, Candela tells her it won't be possible because the land owner wont allow them on his property. This gives Candela an idea and later she tells her husband that the property would be great for Cristobal someday, Severiano says that he tried to buy the land before but Ray always turned him down, Candela tells him to try again, and he does.

He takes a horse and wanders into Ray's land, when Ray asks him to leave Severiano tells him that he won't and again tries to get him to sell the land, Ray says the land is his and will belong to future generations and no, he will never sell the lands. Severiano goes for a low blow and tells Ray that his wife is a giant ho. This earns him a punch in the face.

Ray goes home later and accuses his wife of cheating on him, she wants to know who told him this and he says it was Severiano, Roberta is super upset at the accusation and locks herself in her bathroom, Ray runs off to see the priest and tells him about the fight, this prompts the priest, Padre Sixto to call in Severiano for a meeting the next day.

A new day comes around and Severiano leaves to meet with the preist, while he is gone Roberta shows up at his house and causes a scene making Candela to have a panic attack, once she learns where Severiano is she leaves.

Severiano having waited for Padre Sixto excuses himself because he has "things to do" as he is leaving Roberta spots him and they get into it, she tells him that telling her husband about the affair won't mean a thing because he's not getting rid of her, they kiss and are caught by the priest. Scandalous!

Join us tomorrow when stuff is sure to happen!

Thanks, Eli!

Not sure what to think. I'm still coming off of La Gata. Such a fast turnaround on these things.

I can't figure out Robert. I guess she just the standard never satisfied shrew. Poor Raymundo!

Cynthia Klitbo was great. Loved her little dance at he table.

I didn't think it was an action filled premiere, but I think that may be a good thing. La Malquerida started rather slow but the story was well developed. It didn't burn itself out too early.

Definitely looking forward to seeing more.

Ugh. Make that can't figure out Roberta.

I'm loving the Para Volver a Amar/Amor Bravio reunion here (Mariano/Miriam-Domenica/Barbara/Denisse.)

You guys saw both of Aldonza's Larger than Life dresses in the theme song right?

Well. Just finished the premiere. Roberta and Severiano are nasty pieces of work, ready to get it on right in the church house! Nice way to beckon anvils in the first episode. Raymundo can't tell his wife is deceiving him even with that signature red satinesque number she was wearing?

It's strange to see "Juliana" from Quiero Amarte here in a very different role as Candela.

What a beautiful waterfall on Raymundo's land!

So. We shall see. Thanks in advance for the recap, Eli. See y'all later!

I wouldn't get rid of that waterfall, either! Not for all of Severiano's troublemaking.

I want Roberta's red hoochie mama dress. She can keep the shoes, but I want the dress. And possibly the belt...I'm still thinking about it.

Is "getting it on in the house of God and getting busted by the priest" on the telenovela BINGO card?

CS, those dresses were gorgeous...fabulous effect, but I hope she doesn't have to walk around in them!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't that hotter action in the church than we saw through ALL of that show that shall not be named?

My eyes and head are having a hard time with Susana González as the town tart. Love her and wonderful actress so hope I can make it work.

So funny, Severiano telling Raymundo straight up his wife running around on him and he's one of them.

Hmmm...I saw parts of this...lots of familiar faces...the red satin dress...the waterfall....constantly grinning Rene...constantly hissyfitting Susana. I do not like seeing Susana as the village shrew\slut. ....shrut???? I did not care for the nonstop loud, crazy, frantic ranting and raving.I hope that Susana dials it back a bit and Rene tones down the happy face.

"shrut"
Love it.

Yes they were definitely chewing the scenery last night. Hopefully that will calm down.

But I've been thinking about Roberta all morning. The red dress, the white shoes the cigarette puffing, the constant b!tching, the church slutting...the fact that it's Susana Gonzalez doing it. I don't think we're supposed to like her, but I love her.

Is she really the town slut, I wonder, if only sleeping with Severiano on the side? She seems so hung up on status, I'd be surprised if anyone else is *cough* worthy *cough* of her attentions.

tofie- this is a re-make of a Carla Estrada story which usually were straight-forward so always expect people speaking of conflict with minimal detail but if any, just the ones that matter.

Sara-I agree. Show-that-shall-remain-unnamed was a waste of Daniel Arenas' sex appeal. So was the other show that shall remain unnamed.

Diva- You can ALWAYS expect a fabulous dress in MaPat shows. I remember Marcela's magical magenta magic dress in La Mujer del Vendaval. Susana also rocked a fabulous and viciously similar red dress she was unintentionally killed in in Para Volver a Amar.

Lila-Alejandra Barros is an expert. I know Candela wouldn't take ANY of the crap Barbara from PVAA did.

Interesting start. Only actor I am familiar with here is Cynthia Klitbo, love her.

Loved the red dress too! And horses!

Roberta may officially be a slug, but it seems the town sees her that way.

She's ballsy and I like it.

Looking forward to the recap. I thought the episode set up nicely the events that will affect our young leads 20 + years in the future. Lots of familiar actors that I really like.

Susana is back to one of her scene chewing roles. I like her both when she's playing the good girl, and when she's playing the bad girl, so I will enjoy her wild, money hungry , envious role here.

Alejandra B. is playing a cold "b" here as Candela. It is jarring to watch my recording of her as warm, caring Juliana in QA, and then straight to watching her in this role.

Cynthia looks like she'll have fun in her role.

Oh yes, J! Horses!

And you've already seen my opinion of Klitbo. I'll watch her file her nails.

Um so that comment above should read "Roberta may not officially be a sluT."

Thanks phone.

Kat- I don't think she's a slur either. I'm sure Sev is the only guy she's sleeping with on the side, but her beauty, her brassiness, her take no prisoners attitude, smoking, and flashy was of dressing is probably what gave her the reputation in town. Plus, she's an outsider, which automatically makes people suspicious of her, especially the women who don't want their men to be fascinated with her. Her attitude and "swagger" as the kids say, is probably what attracted Ray to her in the first place, so he likely sees no problem with the way she dresses and acts. He doesn't seem to equate this with slutiness (which I think speaks well of him), and didn't suspect adultery until Sev planted the idea.

Slut not slur, silly Tablet. My tablet has a problem with slut shaming, and I'm ok with that. :)

I'm loving Grumps from DQTQx2 as the priest BTW haha.

Mr. 5ft was calling him "Padre Grumpy" last night. I think it's Padre Sixto? I actually feel like I got a lot of the names right away, which is rare, but a welcome change!

If Roberta and Sev have been getting it on for a while, how can they be sure that the baby she had recently is his or her husband's?

Lisset---Adelina
Flaco I.---Melesio
Cynthia K.---Prudencia
Thelma M.---Valeria

Vivi, I could see him being enchanted with her, talking up his gorgeous ranch, marrying her...and then she gets there and realizes she's NOT the First Lady of the town and gets bitter and grumpy. For all her whining that they're poor nobodies, it sure didn't seem like it to me!

Sara- Yes, the image of Roberta in that bright red dress is vivid in my mind's eye. So costuming did a perfect job and made the impact they wanted. We learned a lot about Roberta's personality just from the dress she chose to wear to her daughter's christening.

Kat- Yup. I see that scenario totally. In fact, I liked their warm hacienda more than the cold mansion of Sev and Candela, even though it was massive and impressive. And of course, NOTHING that Sev and Candy have could beat the incredible waterfall Roberta and Ray have! Gorgeous!

Severiano did try to cast doubt about paternity... And maybe that will end up a plot point, but as a viewer I assume no relationship since the two babies are supposed to fall in love.

Yes Vivi! That waterfall just trumps everything in my book.

Sara- Yep. I know they can't be related for the sake of our two babies eventually becoming a couple, but I want to know how Sev and Roberta know, and get the timeline of their affair established.

Unless Candela was cheating, too...but I didn't see an eligible candidate for that last night.

I did get the impression that the affair was over. At least it was in Severiano's mind. Roberta thinks differently.

But wow those babies are close in age.

And I don't see Candelaria cheating. She struck me as uptight.

Having another snow day today. We had a couple inches a snow over night plus temps in the teens.I am so ready for spring.

Vivi and Sara...Don't you love autocorrect ?...slug...slur

Susanlynn- I'm home for a snow day today. We didn't get much relatively, but enough to shut things down in these parts. But it has been super cold. I too am ready for spring!

I'm down south. We are pretty lucky. Just rain last night and highs in the 40s today.

So many comments already!

I will really need to read the recap to figure out exactly what transpired. Susana is my favorite and I enjoyed every second of her voracious, charged performance. I've said often that when she plays a good character she is very, very good but when she plays the villain, she is brilliant.

Looks like a great cast.

Poor Lisset! Is it written in her contract she must always have the most unflattering hair style??

Diana

I am tired of the big project of going outside..putting on boots, gloves, hooded coat, and scarf.I am also tired of getting shocks as I walk around the house. My students from warm climates ... Haiti, Vietnam, Mexico, and Dominican Republic look like they are in shock.

Susanlynn- I'm sure your students from warmer climes look like I did my Freshman year in college in Boston, straight from SoCal. My new at the time friends from the East Coast teased me mercilessly about my thick down jacket with the face mask and thick lined gloves and boots. :) It was a battle between me and the cold and I was determined to win.

Diana- this is my first time seeing Lisset. It's true - that hairstyle is not the best. But I'm not one to talk. I did think the and Michelle Renauld (our protagonista) favor each other. I've often heard that children resemble their aunts and uncles and not their parents. That seems to be the case between me and my daughter. She looks more like my sister than like me.

Stay safe Vivi, Susanlynn and everyone affected by the snow.

Susanlynn, it's hard enough for those of us who've lived the snow and ice to comprehend what is occurring this winter. I'm sure your students are amazed - and not in a good way.

Diana

It was a nice premiere.

The waterfall is beautiful. I wouldn't sell it either.

I loved Cynthia Kilitbo's little dance at the table.

Roberta whined and whined throughout the WHOLE episode. Will she ever stop?

Sara - "Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't that hotter action in the church than we saw through ALL of that show that shall not be named?"

I was going to say the same thing. There was a lot more action going on there than what we saw in that show that shall not be named.

Roberta and Severino have NO shame. The things the poor Padre has to see and in church out of all places.

Very interesting Sara. Yes, you are definitely right about the resemblance.

I also love Cynthia.

This started with a bang - a full fledged steamy make out session in church isn't something you see every day is it??

Diana

I hope Grumpy Padre Sixto has a strong heart!

Me too. He's going to need it.

Well, Lisett might have better hair in the 20+ year time jump. In the opening credits it looks like Cynthia will be rocking a blonde short do in the future. I didn't notice Lisett's future hair, though.

And the looks on their faces too, with red lipstick smeared all over both their mouths. LOL!

I saw a quick promo with the cast on Gordo y la Flaca yesterday. Cynthia looked fabulous. I actually like her better with the short styles.

Pic of grown up Aldonza (goodness, what a name!) and Tia Adelina (Lisset): https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Byvvr_8CMAANfqB.jpg

Pic of Prudencia (Cynthia K.) rocking the short blonde do: http://bit.ly/1A2S6sL

Fabulous pictures!!

Lisset and Michelle do look like they could be related. (And I'm kind of with you on the name. Aldonza?)

Cynthia K. is da bomb.

Ray said it was his mama's name, but that's no reason to make the kid suffer. Good thing she'll turn out beautiful.

It sounds a little old ladyish to me. Like it needs the Doña before it. Doña Aldonza.

I meant to mention that Raymundo was all smiles, but he did show a little violent/jealous streak.

Fun fact: The baby playing Cristobal (Pablo Lyle) is Pablo Lyle's real life baby son. Read about it here: http://bit.ly/1AAqL2Y

Pretty adorable.

Aldonza...hmm..maybe they will call her Za or AL. It will be interesting to see these characters after the jump into the future. Maybe Susana's harpy character will calm down a little. Will she still be rocking the red ?

Ever since I saw La Que No Podia Amar I have been a Susana Gonzalez fan and she didn't disappoint at all. WOW! Roberta was madder than a hornet. Don't know what caused all of that anger so it will be on to the recap for me. More later.

Thank you in advance Eli, I know it will be good.
the gringo

Gringo- Even with the recap, I don't think you'll get any more of a real answer for Roberta's shrewishness and anger. As mentioned about in the comments, she's basically just mad that she's not Number 1 Rich Beyotch in town. She wants what Candela the Ice Queen has-- the richest husband in town; the biggest hacienda in town; the envy and respect of everyone in town. She's mad that she's seen as an outsider and as a threat to the women in town. She's mad that her husband isn't a ruthless go-getter like Severino. Shes mad that her lover Severino dropped her like a hot potato and now treats her like dirt under his shoe. She's envious and unhappy, and doesn't care to hide it.

Vivi- thanks for the info about baby Christopher! That is just too cute.

And you summed up Roberta pretty well. I start to wonder if she will ever be satisfied.

Missed seeing this, so may have to catch it online. Love to see Susana G. chew some scenery.

Aldonza is also the name of the tavern maid in "Man of La Mancha". She is seen by Don Quixote as his lady Dulcinea.

Loved the recap Eli! I admire to get all the details in a flowing and to the point recap. Concise and complete!

"Severiano goes for a low blow and tells Ray that his wife is a giant ho. This earns him a punch in the face."

I admired this line. Just like the scene - a powerful, quick, one-two punch.

"... admire HOW YOU get..."

Great job, Eli! Perfect first episode recap. You hit all the main points and got all the names and relationships.

La Poloma- Thanks for jogging our memory about the most famous Aldonza.

Thank you Eli! Aaaaand we're off!

Paloma, not Poloma. Forgive me to the typo, amiga.

Thank you Eli, appreciate this.

Golly, first Monday in a half year of Monday's I look forward to Tuesday's show.

If you're big man on campus you pretty much can mack in any hallway you please. What's Padre grumps gonna do, threaten him with damnation or offer them a room?

Vivi, it was priceless when they were caught, deer in headlights & lipstick smeared faces.

Thanks so much Eli. Great recap of the first episode.

Gracias, Eli for getting the ball rolling! "Severiano goes for a low blow and tells Ray that his wife is a giant ho." was my favorite line!

Roberta may be unhappy, but she did give me some laughs, especially with trying to show her sister how awful the whole town treats her. Her entitled ranting is similar to other characters I've seen Susana play, but I found I didn't mind much. She's going to keep things interesting!

Thank you for the recap, Eli!
I don’t understand why Roberta thinks they are poor. They have a really nice house.

”Is "getting it on in the house of God and getting busted by the priest" on the telenovela BINGO card?” I think so! And let’s add “…getting it on with a guy who is not your husband…”

Vivi – I wondered the same thing about the paternity of Roberta’s baby. But if this goes the direction I think it will, they protagonists cannot be half-sibs.

Baby Aldonza looks like she has already outgrown that car seat/carrier.

I will keep watching and hope I get hooked on this.

We were supposed to get 3 – 7” of snow yesterday (Monday) and, instead, got an inch of sleet that promptly froze into icy tundra. Nashville has shut down although some roads are passable. I am so ready for Spring!

Thank you all for the kind words, I wish I could have done more with the recap but I only had about 40 minutes to work on it :/

You did that in 40 minutes? Damn! Nice work!

I wouldn't mind being "poor" like Roberta! Nice house, beautiful land, awesome waterfall! I'll take it any time.

I'm in awe! I want to be a recapper like you. You cover everything in a neat little easy-to-read and funny as hell recap.... AND in under an hour?! You're amazing!

Eli, this was excellent. I can't believe you are doing this without cable and are watching the next day!

I have a very difficult time trying to learn the names and nuances of the characters in a new TN and you provided fantastic descriptions. Gracias!

"...he is a doctor who probably did something really bad because he needs to get the heck out of his pueblo fast!" made me smile. One of many great lines.

I like Roberta's fire and passion. Her kissing the rather repulsive Severiano (the character certainly not the actor) - not so much. They put on quite a show for the poor Padre.

Looking forward to tonight.

Thank you for starting this in such fine style.

Diana

Awww you guys are too nice. Since I no longer have an account with Time Warner I had to resort to other "methods" for getting the novela, do any of you know if Hulu Plus has the show on the next am? If the do I'd sign up, it beats the other things I had to do...

Do I want to know what you had to do? Just don't do anything Roberta wouldn't do...wait, on second though don't do anything Roberta WOULD do!

I have hulu+ and they are pretty good about having the novelas up the next day.

Sara, I meant to tell you your avatar is great!

Diana

Thanks Diana!

Diva, if I told you what I had to do I'd have to kill you....

Prudie's husband's name is Humberto.

Thank you!

Thanks, Eli, for the excellent recap and for the trouble you had to go through to provide it to us.

A farm or ranch is expensive to operate, so Roberta is probably unhappy about the lack of available cash. Evidently she would prefer ready cash to the waterfall. Roberta does not seem to appreciate the charm of the great outdoors.

There was a scene where Ray was talking to his capataz which made it clear that his ranch is facing some financial difficulties and they really need the next harvest to be a good one. It's pretty obvious that Ray is cash poor but asset rich. In any case, Roberta is living a WAY more luxurious life than most of the town folk and has no reason to complain, even if they aren't living like millionaires like Sev and Candy.

Sev seems to raise thoroughbred horses which makes him LOTS of money and which he sells internationally. The ones we saw last night were quite beautiful.

Eli, thanks so much for working through all the challenges to get us this great recap.

I get the sense that this may be a TN with a body count. For all its faults, the show-that-shall-not-be-named didn't even have one murder...except for the crime leader, and that was an accident.
