La Sombra Del Pasado #4 Friday, 2-20 Big, Bloody Liars or Severiano earns his name

Once again we witness the chaotic end to Severiano and Roberta’s tumble in the hay as Raimundo drives his truck into their love shack and lunges out, machete blazing!  Severiano shoots him and Roberta at first tries to detain Severiano giving Raimundo a chance to recover and deliver a slicing blow to Severiano’s left arm.  Raimundo has the advantage and is about to finish Severiano when Roberta shoots him in the back. Raimundo turns his shocked gaze towards her for a long moment before falling to the floor, dead.  Roberta is kneeling, drops the gun, grabs her face and cries that she has killed her husband, the father of her child.   She crawls to Raimundo, cradles his head and cries that she didn’t mean to kill him.   Severiano  sits nearby against a bale of hay grimacing in pain that no one must know they were together and that Raimundo came there.  It’s like a sickening version of parallel play:  she blubbers to Raimundo’s body that she only wanted to scare him while Severiano busies himself with stopping the flow of blood using his belt as a tourniquet and instructing her to burn the place to the ground.

Humberto has checked out the fussy little Cristobal and reassures Candela that he is fine.  Babies fuss sometimes, it’s nothing to worry about.  Prudencia enters and has found this a perfect pretext to complain about Dominga:  maybe she did something to him, she certainly is poorly educated and rude the way she treated. . .Candela cuts her off and defends Dominga and asks her to leave.  Prudencia's huge eyes flash innocence and indignation as she excuses herself and leaves.  Humberto just looks at her and shakes his head.  Candela continues to fret despite Humberto’s efforts to reassure her that Severiano probably returned to the funeral.  Candela has a premonition that something is very wrong.  Humberto goes to prepare her a tea.

Over at Roberta and Raimundo’s house the ever faithful Adelina, Roberta’s sister, is trying to quiet little Aldonza who is also agitated and fussy.

Roberta and Severiano manage to put Raimundo’s body into his truck.  Severiano is about to faint from pain and loss of blood.  She helps Severiano limp towards his truck.

Humberto scolds Prudencia for hassling Candela about her maid at a time when she is so worried about Cristobal and Severiano’s tardiness.  Prudencia thinks Candela is hysterical and ridiculous worrying about Severiano as if her were a child.  The little tiff ends probably as they often do, Humberto leaving in frustration as Prudencia argues that he’s always understanding about everybody except her!

Severiano is increasingly hunched over, his voice gravely and distorted with pain, he instructs Roberta to burn the barn and the truck with Raimundo’s body inside so no one will know he has two bullet wounds, nor see all the blood everywhere.  With bloodied hands she lights the fire and runs out to join Severiano at his truck.  The barn explodes!  She helps Severiano into his truck, he drives away and we see her figure silhouetted against the blazing barn, flames leaping high into the night sky.
Roberta runs some distance away and falls to her knees clawing the ground with the machete, then she begins to stab and stab the ground crying “I didn’t want this, I didn’t want this!”  Then with both hands she widens the scars she made and mashes the gun, machete and Severiano's black leather jacket into the upturned earth and dead leaves.  It is a very shallow grave.

Melesio and Joaquin having seen the fire, arrive at the burning barn, see the truck inside totally engulfed, and realize someone is inside but that it’s impossible to help!

Severiano has managed to drive home; he runs in stumbling and wailing in pain help me, help me, falling to the stairs.  Humberto and Candela rush over while Prudencia hangs back, horrified.

Roberta has also staggered into her house greeted by an equally horrified Adelina.  Roberta grabs her temples with absolutely blood soaked hands.  Horror turns to panic as Adelina demands to know where she has been and why her hands are stained with blood.  The sisters struggle on the staircase, Roberta screaming she wants to be alone.  Adelina screams her question again because she knows that Raimundo left looking for her with a machete . . . this gives Roberta a brief pause, “You knew?’ she asks Adelina.  Adelina demands to know where Raimundo is.  Someone is pounding on the door.  Adelina runs to answer and Roberta runs upstairs.  It’s Joachin.  He tells Adelina of finding Raimundo’s crashed and burned truck with his body inside.  Joaquin leaves.

Adelina’s grief quickly turns to anger and she runs upstairs to confront Roberta.  Adelina asks what did she and her bleepdamned lover do to Raimundo and slaps her hard when she tries to say he just had a wreck.  Adelina tells her what she has done God will never forgive and she’s going straight to hell for it!   Adelina says she will not be her accomplice and threatens to denounce her to the police.  Roberta begs on her knees for Adelina not to turn her in.  Adelina angrily snatches away from Roberta who falls, weeping, in front of a heavy floor length mirror.  She looks up at her own agonized, accusing face, her hands with blood now in various stages of drying and grips her head and then pulls them away, repulsed.

Adelina appears to have left the house and is at the church in front of a painting  of the Virgin crying why, why did she open her mouth?

Roberta is now standing in front of the mirror and begins to strip off her bloodied clothes as she relives the chaotic confrontation and murder of her own husband.  She frantically scrubs the blood from her hands, Severiano’s words echo in her head.  She sees again the burning barn and hurls a glass into the mirror, shattering it.  Covering her mouth she sobs silently, looking at her distorted image through the broken glass.

Humberto attends to Severiano, increasingly incoherent and feverish now with pain.  He is not too delirious to lie, though:  he says he fell off his horse onto a plow share and cut his arm. (I'm not sure of this.  It may be the horse spooked and cut his arm with it's hoof?)  Candela is with Humberto and finds the story hard to believe.  What was he doing at the corral at this hour?  Humberto shushes her!  Now is not the time!  He convinces her to leave the room.  Humberto asks what really happened and Severiano succeeds in shutting him up.  The wound is very deep and has already started to become necrotic and Severiano has lost a lot of blood.  The situation is beyond what Humberto can care for and he needs care immediately or he could lose his arm!  Severiano sobs aloud, screams and then begins to curse Humberto.  Humberto convinces him to seek medical attention even though he will have to explain the injury with his totally not believable story.   Severiano has no choice.

Melesio and Joaquin are at the police station telling their story of finding Raimundo when Adelina enters.  She wants to identify Raimundo’s body.  The Policeman wants to know why his widow didn’t come.  She’s too distraught.  The police official leads Roberta and Joaquin down a spiral staircase to where the body lies covered by a white sheet.  The odor assaults them before even the sheet is removed.  Everyone’s face is distorted and noses covered defensively.   The official raises the corner of the sheet and a glance of only a fraction of a second sends Adelina recoiling with a scream into the arms of Joaquin.  As she struggles to mount the stairs she tells him they will bury Raimundo first thing in the morning as the church will be the site of Padre Sixto’s funeral.  They will not even wait for his only relative, Padre Geronimo.  Roberta is not in the state of mind to have any of this prolonged.  Adelina rushes away, crying.

Roberta picks up little Aldonza from her crib and sits on the floor,  What did I do, what did I do?  Sobbing, she asks the baby to forgive her.  Aldonza’s  gaze seems accusing and she is silent as her mother weeps and holds her close.

Adelina has returned home and sinks heavily to the couch.  Roberta kneels in front of her and wants to know what the police said.  Adelina lets her know that she deserves the worse but she has covered for her because it is true what Roberta said, that Aldonza would suffer if Roberta went to prison.  Adelina wants her to know that she won’t always remain silent.  This whole affair looks very strange, people will begin to suspect and she is not going to take a fall for her again.   Adelina has left the couch, Roberta springs to her feet and, pointing a finger in Adelina’s face tells her she has not one single piece of proof against her and Severiano!  Adelina slaps her hard and tells her not to mention that bastard’s name to her ever again!  Still pressing for pity Roberta tells Adelina that poor Severiano suffered a hell of a chop from the machete and lost a lot of blood and must be in such bad shape!  Unmoved, Adelina tells her that he should have died and all she feels for them both is deep loathing and disgust!  Before leaving she tells Roberta they will be burying Raimundo in the morning.  When Roberta weakly protests she tells her if she doesn’t like it, she can make whatever arrangements she can herself, then leaves.

Prudencia and Candela have it out in the waiting room of the hospital over Severiano’s account of how he got his injury:  Prudencia thinks the story is fishy, Candela thinks that however Severiano said it happened is how it happened:  he has no reason to lie.  Well, he is the first man in the history of all humanity not to lie. . . . Candela has had it; she needs support and if Prudencia can’t supply it, she can just keep quiet.  Candela finally yells at her to shut up.   Prudencia complains to a little old lady sitting next to her that it’s not right to yell in the hospital; it will upset the sick folks.  Candela asks Prudencia to please leave her alone and she does but not before telling Candela she needs to take something for her nerves!  After Prudencia leaves the shadow of a doubt crosses Candela’s face.

Melesio and Domingo tell each other the sad and shocking news of the day.  Don Severiano’s accident with a horse which resulted into a deep wound to his arm.  Melesio asks if she’s sure it was an accident involving a horse.  She only knows what she was told and invokes the blessings of the saints.  Melesio tops that with the news of Don Raimundo’s death.  Dominga asks what time it happened.  About 11.  This is the same time that Severiano came back home gravely injured.   The two look at each other for a long time before Dominga says, not very convincingly, no, the two things have nothing to do with one another!

Early the next morning Roberta and Adelina, carrying Aldonza, follow Raimundo’s casket to the cemetery for the grave side service.  A dark figure approaches.  It is Geronimo, arriving just in time to say a blessing, sprinkling holy water into the grave and to tell Raimundo not to be afraid:  he will be joining The Lord in Heaven and their parents.  As Geronimo prays Roberta weeps loudly, drops her bouquet of flowers and collapses to the ground on her knees.  She throws the bouquet into the grave.  Adelina looks on, stony faced.

Morning finds Candela with Severiano in the hospital.  He has just awakened and she is showering him with words of encouragement when he reaches for his arm.    She falls silent as Severiano encounters the severed and bandaged stub.  What did they do?  What did they do to me?  He totally loses it and her assurance that Humberto did all he could only enrages Severiano.  He yells for her to get out!  She tells him she is going home to change and will return later.  Severiano wails in anguish.

Back in Roberta’s dimly lit room  Roberta is in bed, Adelina sits on the bed and Geronimo stands nearby.  He cannot believe his brother is dead.  How did he find out?  Raimundo had sent him news of Padre Sixto’s death and he had come for that not knowing he would also attend his own brother’s burial.  He asks what happened and Adelina springs up to deflect the question from Roberta who silently begins to freak out.  Adelina says she is sure that in time Roberta will get it all off her chest and open up to Padre Geronimo and tell him all the details.    Geronimo sits on the bed and clasps Roberta's hand between his and a Bible and pledges, by the love he knew his brother had for her, his unconditional support to her and Aldonza.  She snatches her hand away.  Geronimo and Adelina leave.  Roberta immediately calls Severiano’s house to check on his condition.

Prudencia answers and tells Roberta Severiano had an accident with one of his horses, had to go the emergency room and underwent an operation in which they amputated his left arm. Candela enters as she is hanging up and asks who was calling.  Prudencia says it was “a friend of the family.”  Candela lights into her for giving information on Severiano to a stranger.  Candela has REALLY had it now and tells Prudencia she has to get out now.

A sweet little scene with Geronimo holding Aldonza and he and Adelina talking about Raimundo and how their lives had taken different paths and something about some lingering regret for his, Geronimo’s, not having done more for some person.  (Please help here.  Didn’t get this.Anyway, Geronimo asks again how Raimundo died and Adelina says all she knows is that he apparently lost control of his truck and crashed and the truck burst into flames.  He just can’t believe that the two people most important to him died at the same time.  Well.  Time heals all wounds.  Geronimo leaves.

Prudencia complains to Humberto about Candela’s throwing her out.  He’s not a bit surprised, meddling, gossipy thing that she is.  He teases her and asks her not to play the victim.

Adelina goes back to Roberta’s bedroom to find out what kind of tea. . .hey!  Where’s Roberta?  She’s at the hospital with Severiano who is none to glad to see her.  Is she crazy?!  He doesn’t want her to touch him!  He turns his face, he doesn’t want look at her.  Roberta nevertheless leans on and over him.  She tells him Raimundo was buried this morning, he wants to know what the people were told.    She doesn’t think they believe it was an accident but there was no other choice.  She asks anxiously what his story is.  Do people believe him?  Severiano tries to shut Roberta up.  She’s got to talk to him; she has something important to tell him.  More than ever they have to be united.  Candela enters and demands to know why Roberta is there.  Roberta does not flinch or move from her position hovering over Severiano.  Candela shouts again for her to get out!  Roberta says no!  She’s got as much right to be here as Candela!   Candela tries to physically eject her, grabbing Roberta’s arm.  Roberta wrests herself away and says it’s time they both knew the truth.  Candela asks what is this woman talking about.  Severiano has no idea.

Roberta:  You have no idea?  That I’m pregnant.  That’s what I’m talking about.

Candela:  Why should I care?

Roberta:  Because the child I am expecting is your husband’s.

Okay Guys! Here's my first offering for La Sombra! Yes, dark indeed, literally. The brightest scenes were the hospital and the burial of poor Raimundo, the lighting that is.

As usual, feel free to correct or add stuff! Later!

Lila. There was a lot of action here, and your recap captured the whole dark, bloody episode. Whew! Thanks! (I'm still sort of reeling from the fact that there are NO big necklaces, NO dirty faces, and NO Mi Amor, mi amor. And ...NO MIMES!)

J in Oregon

Lila, thank you for the recap! You captured every bit of non-stop action!

"It is a very shallow grave." I don't know whether to say this bothers me or gives me hope. One good rain and all that stuff will be exposed. It's just asking for trouble...but then, I like trouble!

I don't know if I misunderstood Severiano's excuse for his wound or if it changed as he got weaker.

I was really impressed with the acting during that entire scene with Adelina identifying the body and telling Joaquin to have him buried the next morning. So much sadness and anger! I'm glad that Padre Geronimo managed to get there in time after all.

"Still pressing for pity Roberta tells Adelina that poor Severiano suffered a hell of a chop from the machete and lost a lot of blood and must be in such bad shape!" I was right there with Adelina. Why the hell should she care?

I didn't understand what Padre G was saying either, about feeling like he could have helped somebody more. It sounded like he was being deliberately vague, but I won't be surprised if it turns out that he's talking about someone specific and we find out more about it later.

"Because the child I am expecting is your husband’s." Say whaaaaaaat? She's gotta be making that up, right? They haven't been together since before she had Aldonza, right? So she's just bluffing based on their one roll in the hay, right? Right? Now I'm going to have cliffhangeritis all weekend, and I won't even get to watch Monday's episode until Tuesday morning. Boo!

Wow! This was super, Lila. Dark, indeed! Thank you very much.

It is totally unbelievable to me that with a suspicious death like Raimundo's, they wouldn't have had some sort of post mortem examination that would have found the bullets, but maybe this is setting us up for an exhumation later.

I suppose that if every little sexual interlude turned out like this one, people would swear off of it completely.

I don't know if Severiano was much into home improvement before, but if he was, it looks like his paper hanging days are over.

Roberta's conduct and life style seems to be like running down the list of the Ten Commandments, and checking off ones that she has broken:
Adultery? Check
Murder? Check
Bearing false witness? Check
Coveting your neighbor's spouse? Check
Coveting your neighbor's goods? Check

I don't think Candela and Roberta were ever destined to be besties, but Roberta's revelation to Candela turned a standoffish disregard into probable open warfare.

Thanks again, Lila. Your work is always great!

David

This was just spectacular! I was breathless with anxiety just reading the exciting recap! Watching the actual episode might give me a heart attack!

Thank you, Lila for keeping this school trip chaperone in the loop with the happenings in La Plaza Peyton de Santa Lucía!

Wow, Lila, you made it happen all over again with words'

"It’s like a sickening version of parallel play"

Now these people can act. Been trying to decide what scene and what performance to highlight but I cannot. The fight aftermath, viewing of the body, the arrival of Jerónimo, Melesio and Domingo in the kitchen, Roberta snatching her hand away from the bible Jerónimo offered and wouldn't look at him, heck these don't scratch the surface. Please don't let this run off the rails when the young kids show up in 20 years. Want to give a shout out to Lisset, she brung it last night.

I understood Severiano said a horse kicked him and he fell onto the plow.

All I could understand was Jerónimo & Raymundo became estranged because they took different life paths and his took him away.

Thanks, J! Yah, this is NOT the novela that shall not be named! That Roberta is a bold one, isn't she? Didn't expect the pregnancy bomb!

Thank you, Diva! I didn't understand the accident, either. It makes total sense that the story would change considering the state he was in. And yes, the acting was powerful! I think I see why you all rave about, is it Susana Gonzales? Yeah, she was bringing it!

Roberta is really unstable, isn't she? and that's putting it mildly.

Thanks for that on Padre G's conversation. I guess we'll find out later who they person was he couldn't help more.

And re the pregnancy, you're right, Diva: why should they believe her story? How old are these babies and wasn't this tragic coupling their first since Aldonza's birth? Que! Que! What?

David! Thank you so much! I suppose that if every little sexual interlude turned out like this one, people would swear off of it completely.

HA! You said it, man! And love your Ten Commandments check list! Oh, she's a bad'un, that one!

Sara, daaarling, thank you! So glad to be able to fill you in! It is so good to have a story like this after what we endured. This Roberta knows know bounds! I don't know why Candela and Raimundo didn't know before now, jeeezo pete! Thanks and enjoy your school trip! Oh, I like this: La Plaza Peyton de Santa Lucía!

Thank you, dear tofie! Yah, tofie! This is sooo good! Novela gods forbid it run off the rails! We deserve a good show right now!

Okay and the accident memory seems to be what I heard as well. Again, the story wavering would make sense, too! Thanks guys! I hope everyone gets their fix disucssing Sombra this weekend!

Lila, this was amazing. Last night was the first time I could turn in this week was equally impressed with the acting, sets and direction.

And can I add, I felt like I was watching a Shakespearean play, very dark, very deep with undertones of just the right amount of vagueness to keep us on our toes for more info to come. I rather liked I didn't feel there was a clichéd feeling though we've seen these type plots before. I put that down mainly to wonderful acting.

Found the "shallow grave" interesting. Why not just throw all that into fire? In a moment of madness and grief, a big mistake?

Daisynjay

Excellent point Daisynjay! I was so impressed by the literal and figurative darkness of this finely performed episode that I initially began the recap with a little verse I composed but then feared it was corny and took it out. We all hope the quality continues throughout this saga! Thank you, Daisynjay!

Ah yes! We all have noted the poorly covered jacket, machete and gun. Surely these items will be discovered soon!

Lila- Brilliant recap to brighten this very dark episode and show. Last night I realized during each commercial break I was hunched over staring intently at the tv, I was so drawn into the action. Literally on the edge of my seat. Thank goodness for the bits of light interludes with Prudencia.

Was the jacket Sev's or Ray's? I thought it was Sev's nice black leather jacket. Along with his gun and Ray's machete, that's some serious blackmail worthy material just waiting to be found if someone decides to ask more questions, and the law digs up Ray's body and finds those bullets.

Wonderful, melodramatic acting last night. Loved the two slaps Adelina gave Roberta. It was nice to see that she's no pushover either. She really took control of that situation, but she'll probably feel guilty forever for telling Ray that Roberta was gone (although he would have seen that for himself) and then not telling the police what she suspected.

So, I guess neither Roberta nor Sev will be making any confessions to the new priest at any point, considering they just covered up the murder of his brother. Adelina might be feeling confessional shy too.

Sev lost his left arm, no?

I don't think Sev meant to leave his jacket and gun there, but he was a bit delirious with the pain and loss of blood to notice that they didn't make it into the car with him. It was only when he drove away that Roberta realized they were on the ground (she was the one who brought along Ray's machete) and that she had to do something with them. That shallow grave is just not going to do it. I wonder who will find them?

Left arm.

I thought it was Severiano's jacket and Roberta noticed them on the ground as he sped off. The frantic burial of the jacket, machete and gun well done by Susana.

The irony, for all Severiano's efforts to keep the affair secret, two murders, Roberta stakes her claim, challenging Candela. Roberta's gonna have him, what an obsession.

Thank you, Vivi! Was the jacket Sev's or Ray's? I thought it was Sev's nice black leather jacket. I wondered about whose jacket that was. Yes, this makes sense! How long will Adelina remain silent? What a tragedy for her, having loved Ray herself and now crushed by the guilt of covering for Roberta. I'm not a fan of previews but maybe she talks sooner rather than later or the not very transparent Roberta gives herself away?

Thanks guys! Left arm? I'll change it. My internet's about to go down.

They really did just make Severiano's shortened nickname perfect- Sever. They served that one up on a platter for us. :)

They really did give us a gift with SEVERiano.

I really can't wait to get home and watch this tonight. I can imagine Susana Gonzalez put in a great performance.

Thanks Vivi and tofie! I have updated the arm slicing as well as the fact that it was Sever's jacket! Yah, Sever. That was TOO easy!

HOLY COW, LILA!!! Super, super recap!

I sat there stunned last night. I wanted to turn my face away, but I could NOT! Good acting from EVERYONE.

I woke up this morning wondering about some "movie" I had seen last night (you know that early morning brain slow down before you really get going). When I was finally awake, I realized that it was the TN from last night!

More thoughts later, but really wanted to thank you Lila.

How wonderful that this one is not at the midnight hour.

Fatima

I’m not quite sure how you will top your debut recap here Lila.

Your descriptive, perfect imagery was evoked with “Roberta grabs her temples with absolutely blood soaked hands” and “She looks up at her own agonized, accusing face, her hands with blood now in various stages of drying and grips her head and then pulls them away, repulsed”.

Excellent Lila, simply excellent.

I am totally drawn in by this. I can't believe when the episodes are up - things have been riveting.

Perhaps I am giving Roberta the benefit of the doubt but in watching her shoot him, I am thinking she wanted to stop him, not to kill him. If she hadn't shot him, Severiano would be dead. Certainly not a bad thing but I'm guessing there are many more months of nefarious deeds and deceit to follow.

Kat and tofie, the acting was excellent. I am also particularly impressed with Lisset although I also must mention Susana who was also excellent. Yes, Sara, Susana brought it...buckle your seat belt ;)

It seems machetes are making a resurgence. LM, here..Hmm, I'm starting to wonder if they were ever out of fashion. Truly a gruesome weapon.

So many great comments.

"I don't think Candela and Roberta were ever destined to be besties" was great David and Vivi your "They really did just make Severiano's shortened nickname perfect- Sever. They served that one up on a platter for us" made me smile.

Also wondering if Roberta is lying about the pregnancy. Guess we will have to wait and see.

So, fantastic story, excellent acting, amazing recaps and great bloggers. This is going to be great.

Diana

Fatima Yaaay! I remember you from the LQLVMR days before I had to bail due to a (happy) family matter! So glad to see you here! I am glad also that this comes on at 7. It's hard for me to watch ones that are later because I know that revved up feeling very well! See ya, Girl, thanks and hope you hang with us!

Thank you, thank you so much, Diana! Yah, it's starting out with a bang and a slice, glad to have you join us on the Sombra patio!

Roberta did say she only intended to scare Raimundo. Sever's shot was more like a scare, Roberta seems genuinely unbelieving that she actually killed Ray!

Who is Lisset?

Lisset is Adelina married to Lisardo in real life.

Lila, thank you SO much for the warm welcome. I am looking forward to our group meetings!!!

Fatima

Wow the recap was as captivating as the show. Riveting stuff, good acting all around. Ojala the show does not go left later.
Romy

By Roberta saying that the baby that she is EXPECTING belongs to Sever and not claiming that the baby she HAS is his, I am hoping that we have avoided the "you can't be together because you're siblings" plot. Just pure familial hatred.

Oh.

I second J in O--hooray! No mimes!

No Danny. hallefrickinlujah

Don't know what I expected when Padre Jerónimo showed but his entry and presence so far knocks me out

I'm surprised Padre Jero's bible didn't go up in flames when he placed Roberta's hand on it.

Or that Roberta didn't!

tofie- I'm really getting anxious for the veinte años después because I want to see how Pablo Lyles does as the #1 galan. Jarocha mentioned he's a little green, but doing OK.

Romy, we'll see when the young kids show up if they learn anything from the vets and can deliver.

I know on LM a few of the youngsters raised their game in scenes with dynamite veteran actors and didn't have to resort to being cute.

Oops. Forgot to say that even "green" I'm willing to bet that Pablo will put in a better galan performance.

I get the feeling that after this affair reveal, baby or no, Candela won't be so loving and dedicated to Sever as we have seen so far. He really messed up a good thing by getting involved with Roberta.

I kind of like when the script doesn't focus so myopically on the young main couple, and gives the vet actors something to chew on. As much as I'm looking forward to Pablo and all the pretty youngsters, I'm also looking forward to the older folks doing their stuff and seeing how the youngsters learn and raise their game to keep up.

Yeah, been thinking of Pablo Lyle all morning and hope he learns something and can bring it. I saw flashes of decent in PSMA (the Esteban character kinda wimped out though) and at least he's got some great mentors around in this one. Susana again, for one, and she's on another planet.

I keep thinking of Brandon Peniche and how great he did in LM playing beside GG Cantu. I was never impressed with him until Cantu would raise it and by golly Brandon would follow.

It's probably my age, but I find myself enjoying the more seasoned actors over the youngsters.

I hope the more mature cast continues to be a part of the story so I can keep enjoying them.

Thanks, Lila, for the excellent recap of a dark and stormy...and bloody night.

I suddenly realized that one reason for the dark feeling of this tn is Rob\Ray's house with its heavy, dark wooden furniture. Does it have any windows ? It is so different from the beautiful hasciendas in LM and Que te. Remember the doorlike window that Estebad was always climbing through to harass his stepdaughter ?

Roberta is off her gourd for Severed. QTH ? What does this guy have that makes Rob so loca for him ? She is BSC for the guy...or probably just plain BSC?

well, I am gazing out my deck door to snow falling again...4 to 7 inches predicted between now and tomorrow...plus sleet.

Thank you, Fatima. I thought Lisset might be Adelina. Yah, she was great! Not familiar with her either but she and everybody gives this a real, authentic feeling!

Thank you, Romy! It is good and a lot of us are afraid to trust but after a week I'm feeling better and better!

Oooo, the old sibling ploy! I take it that has been used before? That would be ugly!

Hee hee, tofie! Padre Jerónimo DOES have a regal presence, doesn't he?

Thank YOU, Susanlynn! Always honored to share the patio with you! To answer your question, IMO Roberta is just plain BSC!

Looks like we're dodging the bullet with this current storm but that slug of winter out west looks like it could be headed our way!

Oh sweet baby Jesus this recap was freaking gold, gold I tells ya!

I'm going to call Severiano "stumpy" cause I'm evil that way.

Re: Severiano's leather jacket. I seriously though, from the look on Roberta's face, that she wanted to take it home as a memento. If she were smart, she either would have tossed it in the fire to protect him, or taken it home and stuffed it into a plastic bag to blackmail him with later. Alas, she's only obsessed.

This show is such a relief in so many ways and I hope it stays as exciting, or at the very least doesn't get stuck in a rut where the only drama is the young couple repeatedly breaking up and making up. It's so nice to have a real reason for all the drama so far and to have it be actual life-or-death stuff.

Eli- "Stumpy" You're so bad. And so am I because that's funny.

I only read the recap, but like others I'm surprised that the coat didn't at least get thrown in the fire.

Severed did some fast thinking to explain his injury even with all that blood loss. Our neighbor lost his arm in some accident on his farm , and I remember my dad calling hub to have him bandage him up after he cut his hands lifting the rotabeater.

Fatima, I had no idea Lisset is married to Lisardo in real life.

Glad you are here.

Diana

Eli!!!! Thank you, Thank you!!! This means so much to me you being one of my recap idols! Thank you, honey!

"Stumpy!" HA! You go, Girl!

It's so nice to have a real reason for all the drama so far and to have it be actual life-or-death stuff

I know, Diva. It's going to take us all a while to get over you know what! Dialogue that is way more than ¿que haces acqui? and ¿Cómo te atreves a hablarme de esa manera? is just knocking my socks off!

Lila! That made my day!

Eli: :D

Lila - thank you for the recap.

I had to FFWD---> thru all the screaming, wailing, and crying. The weather here is horrible so I did not need all that racket on top of it, to stress me out.

"Roberta is off her gourd for Severed. QTH ? What does this guy have that makes Rob so loca for him ?"
If Severed (LOL!) was not the wealthiest, most powerful guy in that town, Roberta probably wouldn't give him the time of day.

Doris..''all the screaming, wailing, and crying''...and do not forget the bleeding and the slapping. Yikes

The snow has been falling steadily here since noon. Then , the sleet is supposed to follow . I feel trapped in this never ending winter.

You're welcome, Doris! Yah, last night was dark AND loud and angsty (is that a word?)! That's why I'm glad it's a 7:00 show: hard to go to bed on that, especially after recapping it!

Awwww, hang in there Susanlynn! I know how you feel: if it ain't snow it's bone-chillin' cold! Or both!

When Melesio and Dominga were discussing that recent events, those long pregnant pauses were like a flashback to SNL's " The Californians". That was an LOL moment for me.

I'm still having Reina de Corazones withdrawals. Wah...

Thanks, Lila, for giving us an excellent recap.

Roberta must be BSC. She's really trying to force things to go her way. Prudencia is pushy, too.

Eli, I had to laugh at your perfect nickname! Sever=Stumpy.

You're welcome, La Paloma! Wow! We've got a rockin' patio. . .or fireside! :D

Considering events I say fireside.

Doris...Did you watch the 40th anniversary special of Saturday Night Live ? They did a Californians sketch.

Lila thanks for the amazing recap. I haven't been watching this but from the recaps it sounds as if they are sticking very closely to the 'El Manantial' script. I don't doubt the supporting cast can act but I'm worried about Pablo Lyle and the lady who pays grown up Aldonza.

Lila and Sara...Yes, we must have moved inside and are gathering around the fireside...hot tea and toddies, brandy, s'mores....cozy slippers.

Thank you Lila for this recap. Both the show and recap had me on the edge of my seat.

"Prudencia complains to a little old lady sitting next to her that it’s not right to yell in the hospital; it will upset the sick folks." (Fave.)

Well that Severiano had quite the pre-anvil didn't he?

Thank you, J desde NYC, and you are welcome! I have heard this name, "La Manatial", it must be good! Don't know these two young actors playing the protagonists. I don't have the novelas under my belt of many of you b ut I've been around long enough to see some hot leads become hot parents and grandparents. . .hee hee. . .it will be good to see some new blood. I hope they step up to the plate!

Susanlynn, yes! Ooooo, all those hit the spot! Feel free to share a good toddy recipe or does one just wing it? I'll bring my faux fur throw I got for Christmas, too! It is soooo yummy!

CorazonSalvaje(;! Hey, Girl! Thank you and you are welcome! That little old lady was looking like, "I'm not iiiin thiiiis!" Prudencia is a trip: I can't wait to hear my teammates and fireside peeps description of her antics: She's just getting started!

Pre-anvil! I like that! AND he deserved it!

Lila-Ditto on the thanks!

Did the arm-putation happen in the original?

Lisset, Rene, Susana and Cynthia do justice to Olivia, Cesar, Azela and Sylvia's roles from the previous.

I'm sure Alexis will take Alejandro's role to a whole new dimension.

Corazon, yes, the arm-putation was in the original...And in the original, the Severiano character was called Justo..which led many to comment 'que injusto es Justo.'

Ok. You all made me curious so I just watched the first episode of El Manantial to compare. Wow! This is like an exact copy. I'm not complaining because this has a great cast, but Manantial had a stellar cast too. Lots of fave actors. Fun to see Cesar, Olivia, and Alejandro who are all in Hasta el Fin in VERY different roles.

For anyone else who's curious, here is episode 1: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=LDuzcnzoa98

Diana, it is SO good to see you here, amiga!

Talking about the "usual" dialogue, I just HAD to laugh when Roberta goes to see Severed after his big surgery and what does he tell her? NO ME TOQUES!

Honestly, we need a T-shirt with that phrase.

Cynthia Klitbo is doing a great job with the Pru role. Her hair is a bit wacko looking, but I think she is going to drive everyone to drink with all that she does.

Sara, I, too, want to see the veterans. They are really bringing it home.

I love all of these names..they are so interesting...Severiano...Melesio..are those names used much in Latin America?

When Geronimo (am I spelling that correctly) walked in, my first thought was that there is a LOT more to this guy than meets the eye; a lot more. I liked this actor very much in "Cuando me Enamoro". Gosh, there are really some great veteran players here! how exciting!!

Fatima

The church kiss in EM was even more scandalous. In the confessional booth!

OY! In the confessional booth! Holy Cow, Vivi in DC!

Fatima

Vivi, when was EM made?

I just starting watching the episode and that wound makes my stomach churn.

Lila- 2001

"Pre-anvil" that's a good one CorazonSalvaje(; and quite a change to have someone get one already. On the last show, it didn't even feel like we had any anvils at all...now we know where David and gringo's extra stock ended up!

Wow!!! What an episode and Lila your recap is Excellent, Excellent
Excellent.

I have read all 75 comments and all that I have to say for now is this---Tomorrow night is the Oscars. I'm not going to watch them because for me Susana Gonzalez should be holding the one
for best actress. I don't care who is named, it should be Susana.
And after last night, Lisset should get one for best supporting
actress. That's the way I see it.
the gringo

gringo, so glad you will be watching this with us! I agree, Susana was simply wonderful.

Fatima :)

Diva- Thank you :3 pre-anvils are the best kind for those villains you know are going to be a handful.

susanlynn - . YES! I watched the SNL 40th Anniversary and got my "The Californians" fix. It was great!!! That series of skits and Laser Cats skits are my favorites.

gringo! Yaaaay! Thanks, brother! You know we deserve a show like this, gringo, after what we've been through! It will take a while before we all stop referring to you know what. This new show will be good therapy for our PTSD.

gringo, glad to have you along for the ride so you can see your patio/fireside friends are not always negative and don't always recap relying heavily on four letter words and potty metaphors!

Let's do this!

Oh, boy! I had such a strange experience this morning! I was leaning over to tie my shoes, and my beanie fell off, and I began having these strange thoughts.

It occurred to me that Stumpie's arm wound was on the lateral side of his left arm, and that since he could still move his arm, the humerus was not cut in two, although it likely sustained some damage.

Also, I thought, on the lateral side of the arm, there are very few really important structures; the Brachial artery, the nerves and the large veins are all located on the MEDIAL side of the arm.

So, I thought, why couldn't a surgeon stop the bleeding by direct pressure, administer volume replacing fluids by I.V., tie off any bleeding veins, clean the wound vigorously, then sew up the various structures, and begin administering a broad spectrum antibiotic?

Luckily, after I tied my second shoe, I was able to get my beanie back on, thus getting rid of all that silly thinking.

Whew! I don't want THAT to happen again.

David

HA! Bravo, David! For that assessment worthy of a trauma surgeon AND retrieval of your beanie! Maybe Sever had the same thought and this is the reason why he freaked out when he woke up and found his arm gone!

Good thoughts, David, but I suspect that too much time passed dinking around with Severiano's arm at home.

For the gash that he got with the filthy machete, that would have been a tremendous amount of blood loss not to mention the filthy wound itself . More importantly, I would REALLY have to put my beanie on to think that surgeons with that level of microvascular expertise would be in the local hospital.

You know, of course, that I could be dead wrong on that count! LOL!

In any event, you had one hecka of a darn good thought. :)

Fatima

Marvelous recap Lila. Thanks soooo much!

What an episode. We NEVER had this much action on the show that shall not be named in its entire run.

SEVER-iano - Hahaha. I also love "Stumpy".

I loved how he whined that his arm was hurting then took a look at it and saw the stump.

I loved how Candela told Prudencia to shut up. I also loved Prudencia on the phone blabbing to a "friend of the family" about Severiano's arm.

I agree. There was ALOT good acting. Kudos to Lisset and Susana Gonzelez.

Can't wait to find out if Roberta was telling the truth when she said she was preggers.

Another Oscar thought---While I will always believe that Susana should receive the Oscar for best actress, I have been having second thoughts about who should end up holding the Best Supporting Actress Oscar. While I still think that Lisset did an outstanding job last Friday, I have been thinking that her great performance might, just might be overshadowed by the great acting of Sabine Moussier. Rethinking my comment from yesterday, I would have to say that if I had a vote, it would have to go to Ms. Moussier. Susana BSC? Well if that is true, she wouldn't be the only one. Sabine can also play that kind of role to the limit. Her eyes, facial expressions, her ability to really bring on would be reason enough to get my vote for Best Supporting Actress. Sorry Lisset I'm not overlooking the great job that you did on Friday but I just think that everything considered, Sabine has the edge.

David---Great medical analysis but Fatima may have a good point in that a local hospital wouldn't have the best doctors or surgeons.
Also having dropped your beanie
you probably were not thinking that this is a novela. We just have to go with the flow and that is that it was a bad wound, and thus Sever lost his arm. You see what playing around can get you?

Can't wait for Monday noche.
Must see tv.
the gringo

David, it's good to know the creators of this show also subscribe to the Journal of Telenovela Medicine. Everyone has to have some flaws :)

I think I'll have to go with Fatima's assessment that the wound was too gross to do anything about. Plus, I don't know how long it took to get him there. Humberto was talking about the flesh dying already. Since the reason Sev was able to use Humberto for the Padre's death certification is that there's only one doctor in town and he's moonlighting as the town drunk, they must have driven to the next largest town. Which is clearly located close enough that it's no big deal to make a day trip out there, but far enough away that there was no way to save the arm by the time they got there.

I finally finished watching the episode. I agree with everyone that this was a well-acted albeit dark episode.

I am not familiar with the actor playing Geronimo, but I love his voice. I'm also liking the character. I am assuming he will be a regular so I wonder what will happen to keep him in Santa Lucía de la Peyton Place.

Again I find myself suffering from withdrawals from this show. Monday evening can't get her fast enough.

Sara, he will be around because he will take Padre Sixto's place at the parish

I was sort of assuming that. I wonder if he will request it or if *ahem* divine providence will arrange it.

Did I mention I can't wait 'til Monday?

Thanks Mauricio! Glad you're joining us! The action is great and now I hope the young lovers are smart and devoted to each other unlike the couple who shall remain unamed!

Lila

I'm still not clear what Humberto did as a physician that made him come begging to Severiano for a position. I've gone back to the week's first episodes, but I'm still not sure.

Did he a) lose patients because of drinking? b) because of incompetence? c) both? Or, is did just one thing happen that caused him to leave the other town? Was he run out of town?

Or, is it the doctor that is currently in town who is the drunk and not Humberto? Humberto didn't look so incompetent to me when he was doctoring Severed and it didn't take him long to figure out what really happened to Padre Sixto.

Could someone please clarify for me? Thanks so much!

Fatima

Ooh, ooh, I know this one!

Humberto misdiagnosed a child in Los Olivos who later died. The townspeople no longer trust him. The didn't run him out of town, so much as stopped wanting to be his patients, so he's looking for somewhere else to be a doctor.

Severiano told him that the doctor in Santa Lucia (?) is a drunk, which I thought was a lie to get him to fill out the death certificate, but when Severiano talked to the crowd outside the church, someone mentioned that the doctor was in the cantina all night, to which Sev replied that that's why he brought in another doctor.

5Ft! Thank you SO much!! Adding to the confusion was Prudencia's comment about Humberto's losing "so many" patients. In fact, it was only the one death, correct?

So, I wasn't imagining that Humberto was NOT a dummy. He surely didn't come across as one when working on Severiano.

Thank you so much, 5FT!!

Fatima

I wouldn't be surprised, if he was the only doctor in Los Olivos, that he had lost other patients, but people die for all sorts of reasons. It's just silly for her to say that death shouldn't bother him anymore because he's had other patients die. Though I guess, in her defense, she didn't know he'd seen the strangulation marks. He might have seen a lot of death, but that's not the same as seeing a lot of murder victims!

Diva and Fatima, I thought I heard Sever say that they townspeople were about to lynch him for the misdiagnosis and death of the child in that conversation where Humberto tried to get bad with him over which death certificate do you want me to present?

Dang, that's a long sentence!

Anyway, yah, patients die and if they didn't threaten him with a necktie party, they probably blamed him for every death thereafter so his rep took a hit.

I think Severed meant that the townspeople in Santa Lucía would lynch Humberto if they found out. Severed had the power to reveal that info. Therefore Humberto should sign the fake certificate and shut up.

But it was a while ago and I might not be remembering correctly.

Sounds reasonable, pretty sure I heard the word lynch, though. Thanks, Sara! Looking forward to tonight, are ye?

I don't doubt you heard the word lynch. I just think Severed was talking about a possibility, not a concrete past event.

I am counting the hours to tonight's episode. It's been a long time since I've been so eager to see a show.

We and viewerville deserve this!

:D

Lila and Sara, thank you for your thoughts on Humberto's story. Things have been moving very quickly on this TN. I wonder if it is just the first week "set up" and then we go back to the norm. I so hope not!

This is the first week and we have close to 100 comments today!

Waiting for tonight!

Fatima

Your comment just now was 100, Fatima!

LOL!

It should be REALLY good tonight! That bomb Roberta dropped is deserving of some really good air time. :))

Fatima

Oh Fatima! I confess that I almost always love the first 20 episodes of any TN. I admit that I am so afraid of this one not living up to its promise. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. The cast is good, ratings have been passable in Mexico and though I am not familiar with the producer she does not seem to have a bad reputation on Caray. I also feel lucky that I haven't seen the original. I don't think a remake has ever surpassed the original so I know I won't be disappointed in that regard v

I can't imagine anything being worse than the show that shall not be named.

There was mention of lynching, yes. These being civilized, semi-high-society people, I wonder if they meant that figuratively. Not so much physically stringing him up as shunning them socially. But whatever it was, it definitely happened already, or Humberto wouldn't need a new job. It exposes Prudencia's "Fine, I'll just go back to Los Olivos!" as an empty threat.

It's too bad this is happening to Humberto, because he seems like a decent guy who has made some bad mistakes...and they just keep getting worse.

It's interesting (to me) that Humberto is a mostly nice guy married to a mostly dissatisfied wife. Similar to Ray and Roberta...but not nearly as toxic to each other and others!

Though like you said, Diva...it's getting worse and worse for Humberto!

Fatima piqued my curiosity.

We've had almost 400 comments since Monday. The comment count grew every day.

Please, TN gods...let this remain entertaining.

My question to Mr. 5ft while watching Humberto's calm reaction to Prudencia's flapping about was to ask "Why is it always the nice ones who end up with the raving shrews?!" *slow glance up* "Wait...I'm not THAT bad, am I?"

He says not. I'm not convinced :p

My husband had been known to call me "Shrewbaca." He's the nicest guy on the planet.

i've already started to work on the recap for tonight, I'll do my best to have it posted at a reasonable time tonight or tomorrow morning!

The fact that you're this excited about it gives me hope! I could potentially watch about the first 15 minutes before I absolutely, positively MUST leave for rehearsal, but I'm afraid if I try to do that I'll end up either being late or not leaving at all. Torture!

It was a sad but good episode

That's a tantalizing comment, Eli. Just an hour and a half!

Can't wait to watch the episode.

I'm going to try my best to finish the recap tonight but I can't promise nothing!

Take your time Eli. Don't worry about it. :)

Candela's hair reminds me of Janet Jackson.
