La Sombra del Pasado #32 - Wed 4/1 - In which the fools don't even recognize their own foolishness
Aldonza has no intention of going to the engagement party, which Adelina is happy about. As she is happy to see the pretty, pretty flowers…and the sweet card, "None of these flowers is as beautiful as you, but they try." Are they from Renato, or aren't they? What about Cristobal? Aldonza doesn't think so, since he was there and since he asked who sent them, and since he's on the verge of getting married. And really, Aldonza really doesn't want to talk boys…she'd rather clean house. Screw that! I say keep talking about boys if those are the only options!
Valeria is furious that her kind, thoughtful, insincere invitation was rejected. Candela reminds her that whoever loses their temper loses. She'll get Aldonza there, and it's all part of her plan to get Aldonza out of her son's life forever. She's sure Aldonza won't be able to stand seeing Val and Cris so in love, and that will be enough to get her out of town. Really, Candela? That's all you've got? Why am I feeling like some kind of public humiliation is an unspoken part of her plan?
Before they can leave, Aldonza spends some time pondering the pictures of her parents in her locket. She misses her mom. We do, too, Aldonza! Adelina says Roberta adored her…despite whatever defects she may have had, Aldonza was the most important thing in her life. And with that--they're off to clean.
Cris tries to avoid a convo with his dad, but he falls for the whole "Don't be a girl" line that Sev feeds him. Severiano says that Abelardo WILL be working at the ranch, but he'll be reporting directly to Sev, so Cris won't have to deal with him. He uses the friendship with Uriel as his excuse. Sure, he cares what Cris thinks, but everyone deserves a second chance. Sev says Abelardo won't be doing anything important, he'll just be an errand boy. Cristobal gives his notice.
Adelina barely listens to Aldonza talking about what they need to do with the house. She's overwhelmed by her memories. Aldonza gets it. It's hard for her to be there without her mom.
Padre J meets with Candela. They argue a bit about their last conversation, but Cande sticks to the story that there are plenty of things Sev gets up to that she has no idea about. Anyway, she didn't come there to talk about that, but something that Padre J might have a little trouble understanding.
Adelina goes looking for a cloth that happens to be in Sev's hand downstairs. She tells him he's not welcome and had better leave before he comes off worse than the last time Aldonza saw him. Severiano says that SOMEONE has been talking too much and that SOMEONE had better shut up if THEY don't want anything bad to happen. Adelina tells him again to leave. "And if I don't, are you going to make me?" No, Aldonza is going to make him…with her little friend the hatchet. Sev laughs and says aggressiveness must be in her blood, though Roberta was far more wild. Joaquin enters to see Aldonza threatening Sev. Sev smarms some excuses about welcoming his neighbors, but I'm sure Joaquin doesn't buy it.
Padre J refuses to go along with Candela's plan…which appears to be, going to the engagement party so that Aldonza will go. She paints it as an opportunity for Aldonza to rub elbows with the upper crust and prove she's not a ho like her mother was. I'm paraphrasing. Padre J says Candela is a snob and Aldonza doesn't need to prove anything to anybody. Cande backs off and calls it making a step towards peace. It's been too many years of bitterness and there's no point staying angry. And no, she doesn't think this will make all the anger evaporate just like that, but it's a start. And besides, Cristobal doesn't have a lot of friends and it would make him so happy for Padre J and Aldonza to be there. Padre J still looks like he smells poo. Cande finally talks him into it and Padre J says he'll pass on the message, but he's not sure Aldonza will go.
Lola and Emmanuel walk down the streets with their arms around each other, arguing about going to the engagement party. Lola wants to go, but Emmanuel doesn't. He's happy enough to dance with Lola in the street…he doesn't feel the need to face Doña Candela outside of work hours. After a kiss from Lola, he changes his answer to "maybe." A little snogging gets him to "almost" a yes. And after a final lip-lock, not only does he think that no one could refuse, but he thinks Lola's lips have changed his life.
Simoneta's lips are attempting to change Sev's mind, and it appears they have. He's ready to set her up in a house so he doesn't have to keep sneaking into the hotel. I think it's Aldonza's house that he has in mind…far outside of town and ideal for their needs…and he hopes he can still get it, but in the meantime, he's got another house in mind.
Abelardo pays Valeria a visit at home to tell her he sent expensive flowers to Aldonza. I really could have lived another day without knowing that. Val says that until Aldonza leaves town, she won't reward Abelardo. He wants to spend a night together, but Val says that will happen on HER terms. Abelardo tries to coerce her into showing a little more affection or he'll tell Cris. "Go for it. I'm tired of your blackmailing." Abelardo drags her out of her house where Cris just happens to be pulling up. "Tell him already!" Since Val won't talk, Abelardo starts to. Val cuts him off to say that Abelardo is in love with her and completely jealous and it's why he won't leave them alone. "Uh…but…tell him where that love come from? Tell him what happened between us!" Valeria says they did try to date, a looooong time ago, but it didn't work out. And really, it meant nothing to her. "You heard her. It was nothing. And she's marrying me. So if that's it, then run along now." Cris doesn't even want any further explanations from Val. "Aw, gee, thanks for trusting me!" Yeah, Cris. Thanks. Thanks a whole freaking lot.
Aldonza goes into the parish house while Adelina stays outside to thank Joaquin for all his help. She still doesn't think moving into the house is a good idea, but Aldonza is determined. She brings up that Joaquin must be busy and his wife can't possibly be happy about him spending his little free time with them. She finally agrees that she appreciates his help and wishes him a good night.
Flavia comes to talk to Padre J in his office. "I don't know if you're aware that my husband used to be totally in love with Miss Adelina." I think Padre J has had just about enough BS in this gossipy little town, plus he's already dealt with Cande today, and he was practically on his way out the door. He asks Flavia what that has to do with anything, since that was years ago and nothing ever happened. "Well, I'm afraid that…you know, Padre." Padre J refuses to play that game and asks her to explain. "Well if he spends time with her he might…." Padre says Adelina's not that kind of woman. "Well, could you just remind her that Joaquin is a married man?" Padre J says she's the first one to remember and she doesn't need his advice. "No buts! I'm not going to do anything you're asking me to do. I'm not in the habit of judging people, much less when I know they're innocent. I think what you need to do is trust your husband." He tells her that if her marriage fails it will be because of her mistrust--not another woman. Flavia goes away angry.
Back in the DF, Renato gets a call from Aldonza, to thank him for the flowers…that he didn't send. He wonders if there was a card, maybe? Must have been another admirer, of which he's sure she has many. Aldonza says maybe it was Cristobal, an old boyfriend. Renato says he'll remember that name…but isn't he related to that Severiano Mendoza guy? "Wait, the son of the man you hate most in the world is your old love? Ay, Aldonza, I think you have a lot more to tell me!" She agrees and promises to tell him next time he sees her. He jokes that now when he comes back it will be because of the gossip. I propose that the Santa Lucia Tourism Board make that their official slogan…Visit Beautiful Santa Lucia! Come for the flowers, stay for the gossip! Renato sends her a kiss goodbye.
After he ends the call, his mom comes in and says he always looks so happy after he talks to Aldonza. She thinks he's in love and he admits he's never felt this way about anyone before.
Adelina is just about to serve dinner. She tells Padre J she's actually getting a little more excited about moving back into the house. There's a new air of hope around the place. He brings up Joaquin and tells her about the visit from Flavia. "I hope you didn't pay attention to her!" He's curious about Adelina's feelings, but she says she only sees him as a friend, nothing more. Padre J looks thoughtful.
Dominga is having second thoughts about Lola going to the engagement party with Emmanuel as her boyfriend/date. When Candela hears the argument, Lola actually turns to her for support. Dominga claims she needs Lola's help in the kitchen. Candela tells her to get someone else to help. "Lola's young. She has a right to have some fun." Lola can't believe she's saying this. Candela says if Cristobal invited her then she doesn't see why Lola shouldn't go. "Hey, maybe your friend Aldonza will come! The two of you could have a great time! Valeria invited her herself." Is anyone else creeped out by how cool Candela is playing this? And surprised that she didn't spit fire when she said "Aldonza"? And wondering if there's a bucket of pig's blood in our future?
Valeria gives Mari a hard time for liking Emmanuel. She calls him a "charro montaperros" (literally, horseman who rides dogs; poor man's charro; cheap imitation charro). Mari's drawn in by his sad, dreamy face. Valeria says they must be talking about two different people. Besides, he likes Lola better. Valeria fakes shock that Lola did such a sneaky thing as "steal" a kiss from him. Plus, Mari's pissed that her mom is helping Lola. Well, Valeria can't stand Lola, so she'll help Mari. "At the party, we'll have a golden opportunity." Oy, with the damn party already!
Renato's dad comes home just in time for dinner with Renato and his mom. Everyone predicts that Renato will be spending a lot of time going back and forth to Santa Lucia, including the maid. His dad asks him not to neglect his career. Renato's mom has been having headaches and his dad is worried about her. He insists on escorting her to bed and on her seeing a neurologist. Renato ponders Aldonza's words--that maybe Cristobal is the one who sent the flowers.
Aldonza is up late thinking about the last time she kissed Cris, when he told her that he wasn't going to Spain because he wanted to spend the summer with her. She starts to cry. Cris is also remembering kissing Aldonza in the rain by the waterfall and telling her that he can live his own life without that meaning that he's disrespecting his parents and that he won't let the shadow of the past affect their present.
Adelina tells Aldonza that she didn't like Sev coming out to the house. Aldonza swears she'll never show him fear again. "I'm afraid he's going to do something to us!" Aldonza tells Adelina to do what she does--change that fear into fury! He got into the house because they left the door open. She'll tell Joaquin to change the locks. "A new lock isn't going to stop that bastard! Tell me, how did he get in the night he raped you? Because the door should have been good an locked!" Aldonza tells her to shut up and quit reminding her. "I'm sorry. I don't want to torment you, but it's important that you keep it in mind…like your Uncle says, going back to that house is going into the lion's den." Aldonza says she keeps that in mind (lo tengo presente) every day, and like she's already told her aunt, the worst thing you can do with a guy like that is show fear. All she can say is that she won't let him get away with anything…not this time. He won't get his way again, ever.
It's time for the morning screech-fast at Casa Mendoza. This morning, Candela is upset that Abelardo is coming back to the hacienda. Sev uses the "Uriel" excuse again. Plus, it'll help drive Cristobal away. "But we want him to stay!" "We WANTED him to stay, Candela." Seriously, people, could you please TRY to remember which nefarious plan is the priority today? This is what happens when people don't read their emails. As long as Aldonza is around, Cristobal is better off away from there. Candela brags that she'll take care of Aldonza. After that infuriating exchange, Sevariano calls his lawyer and says he needs help breaking a rental contract…he just needs to take a look at it first.
Aldonza visits Padre J's office. She and Adelina have now agreed to leave Roberta's ashes in the church, so she'd like to have the mass soon. Padre J will check his schedule and they can talk about it tonight at the house. He brings up Candela's invitation, and that she insisted that he convince her, but he's sure she doesn't want to go. He appears to have believed the crap about mending fences. Aldonza says some wounds never heal. "Like which ones? Did they ever hurt you directly? Your mother's economic problems started way before you left, and it wasn't necessarily because of the Mendozas." Aldonza says that Sev did everything he could to get them to leave. "Is there something more you want to tell me?" Aldonza says there's no point talking about anything that can't be fixed. He offers to go to the party with her, but she still has no intention of going.
It's the day of the party. Cris is morosely watching people set up chairs and tables. Melesio approaches, snags some candy, and brings up Abelardo. Cris did quit, but Sev doesn't seem to care. Melesio asks if Cris actually likes what they do at the ranch. He does. "Then quit being stubborn! It's stupid for you to quit something that you like, on top of giving the satisfaction to that useless Abelardo." Cris reminds him that he was going to leave anyway…he's just speeding things up now. Melesio reminds Cris that he said before that he didn't want to stay to confront his memories, and then he said that Aldonza was unsettling him. "I think it's about time you took the bull by the horns. Fight for what you want in life and for the woman who makes you feel butterflies…instead of having parties you don't really care about."
Aldonza walks away from the church, talking to Renato on her cell. He's still working on whatever she asked him to work on. She tells him about the party invite…to her ex-boyfriend's engagement party. She says she's not going, but Renato thinks it might be a good idea. "Keep your friends close and your enemies closer."
Severiano summons Abelardo to a bar to ask him to steal a copy of the rental agreement. Abelardo tries to say he's so stupid he wouldn't know one contract from another. Sev won't take "no" for an answer. "Let me make this easy for you. During the engagement party, you're going to go to my compadre's office and search for it." Abelardo looks either scared or pissed that he'll be missing the party.
Tomorrow: It's party time for everyone, including Aldonza.

Favorite line: "Padre J still looks like he smells poo." Did he learn that look from Cande? 'Cos she has that look permanently tattooed on her face.
When Renato's mom had the headache "again", I'm suddenly wondering how long she has, and what single lady will now catch the attention of Renato's Dad.
Thanks again Diva--
J in Oregon
" Yeah, Cris. Thanks. Thanks a whole freaking lot"
Hate it but I had to tighten my beanie couple times last night and that more in one night than normally a fortnight.
Renato's Mom - no, you ain't trippin those are mushrooms
Aldonza - of course I have a permit to carry this hatchet
Emmanuel - "Sugar, oh, honey, honey / You are my candy girl / And you got me wanting you" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nwgbfriHWt8
Lola - think this something? wait till you get the wrapper off
Val - thank god Cris is stupid
PJ - do I have dear abby tattooed on my forehead?
Cris - Tell me, how can a boy "keep his head when all about you are losing theirs and blaming it on you"?
Severiano - what? I've been part of Big Brothers, Big Sisters for years
So,to party or not to party...seemed to be the theme. Could Lola and E-Man be any cuter? Lord when that man smiles....ok, trying to focus. And Cande being all sweet and inviting, I think that had everyone doing a double-take that maybe they were living through an episode of Invasion of the Body Snatchers. Where is the real Cande?
I think Sev is realizing Aldonza is no pushover...good for her. And loving how every time we have him pull something, someone shows up to witness the event.
Val is just a shrew. I don't even see how Cris can attach himself to this chick anymore. I hate when characters feel like "oh well, can't marry who I want so I'll attach myself to the cretin that is available." No, you could stay single...viable option!
Love those previews. Poor Cande when she sees Allie walk in with handsome hunk. Well, poor Cris too.
One last note--throwing this out there, but did anyone else think seeing Renato's sweet mom ( and I loved that kinky mushroom lamp--what a hoot) and hearing she is suffering from headaches---sleezy doc guy, ill wife, could he be slowing killing her? Hey, TN world...my mind goes there.
Daisynjay
I have to agree with J that the "Padre looks like her smells poo" line was good.
I also liked the bucket of pig's blood quip and especially the whole riff about people agreeing on which nefarious plan they were following and not reading emails.
And THANK YOU for the explanation of charro montaperros. It was used in Amores con trampa and I'm not going to say out loud where my mind went. Talk about gutter.
This recap was the perfect accompaniment to my second cup of morning coffee. Thank you!
daisynjay - I haven't even seen the episode and I agree there is something fishy going on Renato's house.
Heeey... Will Dr Dad end up in Santa Lucia?
I have enjoyed every single episode and this was no exception. Your excellent recap, embedded vocabulary and sweet snark made it hard to pick just a few favorites but "Valeria is furious that her kind, thoughtful, insincere invitation was rejected", "Padre J still looks like he smells poo", "..propose that the Santa Lucia Tourism Board make that their official slogan…Visit Beautiful Santa Lucia! Come for the flowers, stay for the gossip!" were among my favorites.
My emotional crush Padre J was magnificent, wasn't he? Although disappointed he let Cande's seemingly rational pleas get to him, he stood his ground with Flavia brilliantly! And of course, he is right. The sour, dour Flavia is her own worst enemy and she will surely drive Joaquin away with her obsessive jealousy.
That said, in truth, she knows her husband is still in love with Adelina. In her calmer moments it appears she loves him and he seems to care about her. So, would her only other course would be to become the meek, accommodating, understanding loving wife? Would fighting with love for her man work? I doubt it. I think fate controls certain things and we can only make a choice before the inevitable occurs - stand by and accept or go out swinging. I fear her battle is already lost.
Cris' kisses enraptured Aldonza and sparked a fire - they were clearly in love from the moment they met. Instantaneous spark. It appears to me that while Em cares about Lola, I'm not convinced he is feeling much else other than the depth of her kisses. Physical involvement does not mean a deeper emotional attachment. But as you noted Kat, sometimes they are a powerful force as "Simoneta's lips are attempting to change Sev's mind, and it appears they have"...
Loved Aldonza approaching Sev with the hatchet!! I wish him the same fate as LaFont in Pasion who lost body parts on a regular basis.
I liked Renato's mother - I don't recall ever seeing the actress. His father is obviously a liar and a cheat but I thought perhaps at least medically he was above board (?) But daisy, your comment about her possibly being poisoned got me thinking...Very interesting! J in Oregon, I did think though that she isn't long for this world and also wondered who he might set his sights on if she dies. I think Adelina loathes him so who else would be available?
tofie, your entire list cracked me up.
Al looks absolutely beautiful in the previews. Cannot wait until tonight!
Kat, thanks so much for the recap and the embedded vocabulary was great.
Diana
I doubt a lot of good things will be happening in Santa Lucia- Gossip Capital of the World.
Daisy, as devious as my mind sometimes works, I hadn't considered that Renato's dad could be offing his wife. Wow!
Loved Aldonza threatening Sev with the hatchet, but I wish she would have had a machete: That might have made Sev break out in a cold sweat.
Lazy Lardo going for the easy money, and getting himself deeper and deeper into Sev's quagmire.
I have high hopes for the fiesta. Cande and Vale have invested so much effort in getting Aldonza to attend. I am hoping that Aldonza 2.0 with Renato on her arm will wow the crowd, and flick whatever is thrown at her off her sleeve like a bread crumb.
David
Love that image.
Michelle Renauld is doing a great job with this role. She is proud, but never comes off as haughty. She is vulnerable, but hasn't been weak.
Visit Beautiful Santa Lucia! Come for the flowers, stay for the gossip!
a bucket of pig's blood in our future?
It's time for the morning screech-fast at Casa Mendoza.
Thanks, Diva! What fun your recap is! I can't imagine that Val and Cande have some humiliation planned but the joke may be on them! I hope Cris gets flooded with a wave of jealousy and passion and breaks up with Val right at the party and declares his love for Aldonza!
Feels good just saying it!
That Flavia! Uuuuf! I know people like her: they're NEVER responsible for anything bad that happens in their lives and their "power" lies in playing victim. They can be nasty pieces of work!
Aldonza has already had the ultimate violation and humiliation so I pray all these plots and plans will backfire in the faces of the evil doers and they'll be left with their faces burnt and smoking like so many cartoon characters who've had their own crap blow up in their faces!
Loved Aldonza threatening Sev with the hatchet, but I wish she would have had a machete: That might have made Sev break out in a cold sweat. -- David
That is BRILLIANT! WHY didn't they go for that! Aldonza would have had NO idea that's how her dad whacked off Sev's appendage and it would have been sooo sweet to see Sev break out in a cold sweat! Dang! Lost opportunity!
Tofie, speaking of smokin', your list is the thang, girl, just the thang!
Thank you!!!
"Loved Aldonza threatening Sev with the hatchet, but I wish she would have had a machete: That might have made Sev break out in a cold sweat".
That would have done it I'm sure! :)
Diana
Visit beautiful Santa Lucia. Come
for the flowers, stay for the gossip.
He thinks that Lola's lips have changed his life.--Well yeah! They'd change mine too.
Tofie---Lola---Think this is something? Wait till you get the wrapper off.
Great comment today David.
Must see TV tonight. The party can't go well. Fireworks for all I'm sure.
I got a close look at the flowers
last night, they were beautiful roses.
Got to run.
the gringo
You've got me thinking, tofie. I'm been thinking lately that Cris is kind of...ineffectual. He really doesn't seem to stand up for anything.
Enlighten me, folks. He seems a little weak and wishy washy to me right now. Yeah he pitches a fit about Lardo and the party...but ultimately he gives in.
"It's time for the morning screech-fest at Casa Mendoza. "
So true!
PadJer rocks. Whenever he learns what Sev did to Aldonza, I see a full-on Rambo with PadJer's face, going to even the score on Sev.
Sara - ITA about Cris. He's a pretty boy with puppy-dog eyes and that's all. No spine. Yet. Meh.... Val can have him.
Just a thought, could her attendance at the party be part 1 of her "mis planes"?
If they try, wouldn't it be awesome to have the full BodSquad plus Cris step in to defend her? I know, too early in the proceedings, but a girl can dream. I just want to see Val and Pru's eyes bug out. Truly.
Forgot to mention before how I loved Lardo's deer in headlights look when Sev told him what he wants him to do. Being a good for nothing lazy bum is one thing, maybe even a bad gambler, but becoming a criminal and knowingly breaking the law with the "boss" able to make it his word against a bum's word...whole 'nother picture. Bet he was thinking "maybe working wasn't such a bad thing after all.
Also Sev has to have rocks in his head if he thinks that doofus would be a chick magnet for the likes of Aldonza.
Daisynjay
Daisynjay - I think attending this party, which was not part of 'mis planes', has not been put at the top of the list. Nice to see that Aldonza can go with the flow. ;-)
Gracias, J! I agree that Renato's mom is probably not long for this world. They never throw out stuff like that without it meaning something.
Gracias, emeraldrose! I hope you enjoyed your drink :D
Gracias, tofie! "Do I have Dear Abby tattoed on my forehead?" I think that's going to be the opening of Padre J's next sermon!
Gracias, Daisynjay! Even Mr. 5ft was watching Cande and saying "What?!" That behavior was not normal.
Gracias, Sara! Well, at least it wasn't the SAME conversation for the entire hour, but you're right, this was set up for The Party. Maybe The Party is a sign that The Wedding of The Century won't take place? They're throwing us some pretty dresses and decorations now because we won't get them later?
Gracias, Diana! I think if I were Flavia, and I were that worried about my husband taking up with his ex, I'd go hang out with the ex, not scream at her. That's just completely ineffective behavior, whether it's justified or not. Padre J's right--she's the one who's going to drive him away, but he's not going to cheat on her.
Gracias, David! Oh, I would love for her to have been holding a machete and give Sev a little traumatic flashback. He has it coming!
Gracias, Lila! I do hope this party is the end of Cris and Val. Candela is banking on Aldonza not being able to see them together, but she forgot that Val's incapable of controlling herself and it won't take more than the introductions for her to fly into a rage. Who wants to get married after that? OK, some guys find jealous rages charming, but Cris is more of a "Do we have to go out? Let's pop popcorn and snuggle on the couch." kind of guy.
Gracias, gringo! Oh, yes, fireworks indeed...I can't wait!
Gracias, doris! My money is on Padre J in that fight...I just hope he doesn't knock him out with one punch...and drags him into the town square and forces him to publicly admit all his crimes.
I feel for Padre J, he has to deal with so much bull! I'm just gad that they gave him a spine, I'm so sick and tired of priests who just sit around and do nothing to REALLY help!
I hope this isn't about moving the whole family down to the SL so there's a doctor to replace Humberto. If Humberto goes down, I want him to drag Severiano kicking and screaming into hell with him.
Dear Diary, at least five jealous women came to visit my office today to whine about their husbands' wandering eyes. Puh-leeze! It's as if they make up drama to keep themselves occupied. I think I need to ramp up the fundraising stuff, maybe have a church carnival or something...anything to keep them too busy for pointless gossip. And then after listening to all that unfounded whining, I actually caught Roberta Alcocer and Severiano Mendoza snogging right there in my church! Can you believe it! Now, that's wandering! Sev's being really threatening, though. I had this crazy thought that he might try to off me, but nah...he may be a manipulating adulterer, but murder?
Diva - LOL! Oh if only he had kept a diary to cast suspicion before Sev did him in. And to think, if he had lasted one more day, Sev wouldn't have had two hands to strangle him with.
Seriously, people, could you please TRY to remember which nefarious plan is the priority today? This is what happens when people don't read their emails.
BWAHAHAHA!!! Yes and also reminded me of work, which made me laughter harder and choke on my mini doughnut!
Tofie - Emm and Lola's list entries are my fave today (love that song!). What were you tightening your beanie about last night?
I don't know how I feel about Dr Dad possibly relocating to Santa Lucia. I can totally see Humberto being killed off, but I was also hoping he would take some people down with him. Now I fear he's going to go and all his secrets will die with him. That's always frustrating.
hellashelle said
"And to think, if he had lasted one more day, Sev wouldn't have had two hands to strangle him with."
There I go spewing coffee again.
Cris was so hohum with Val and her lame explanation why she and Abelardo aired their dirt in the street. This the guy that's become a thorn in his side and Val has defended before. He didn't have to go into a jealous rage but we got barely a raised eyebrow.
After Severiano comes into the house, Joaquin sees Aldonza with a hatchet, yet no one even mentions anything till the next morning. The guy raped her before, has cornered her several times but no more reaction than if a racoon walked in the house.
Renato now her closest confidant.
Joaquin doesn't know about the rape, does he?
I keep waiting for Flavia to join the Mean Girls club. But I don't think Candela wants to associate with the wife of a common laborer. The horror! As much as it bugs me that nobody seems to give a rat's ass about Adelina...all that fuss over party invites and she was NEVER mentioned...the attention she's getting from Flavia is not what I want either!
tofie, I agree, that whole "Oh, no big, 'cause I trust you" moment was a bit unbelievable for me. He hasn't exactly extended that same consideration to Aldonza for doing nothing more than leaving town without a word. Is that really such a heinous crime compared to dating Abelardo? Not in my book!
Joaquin doesn't know about the rape, but I wonder what else he DOES know. It's one thing for Sev to have a sterling reputation among the townsfolk, but ranch hands talk. I think if he did know, he'd be begging Padre J to tag him in at the cage match.
To me, the "I trust you" spoke to the fact that Cris doesn't love Val. Honestly, in that moment, I think he cared more about Lardo not being happy than why he was even with Val. He's not wondering because deep down, it would hurt his pride more than his heart.
I agree with those that don't think Renato's dad is a murdere. My first thought was brain tumor, but maybe that's just because the last time he was with a sick woman, it was a tumor.
