About SPAM and DISAPPEARING COMMENTS and SORRY, SUSANLYNN!

Dear friends,
You may or may not know that our blog is attacked daily by frenzied legions of spammers. These days most of them are witch doctors, but in the old days they were peddling limousine services and air conditioners. I have turned on comment moderation after a week, and am now deleting most of the spam by hand...

... but I just discovered that blogger has, in its own attempt to ease my burden, been classifying zillions of spam comments - but also plenty of legitimate ones - as spam...

... for instance, I just found a folder on the site called SPAM and in it were about 1,500 comments dating back a couple of years and a lot of them were from (sob) Susanlynn who is one of our longest-contributing and devoted fans...

... so, if you find that your legitimate comments are not appearing (ie you are not a witch doctor or an air conditioning salesman) write to me at caray@mappamundi.com and let me know.

Please forward this to anybody you know who may have suffered the indignity of having a legitimate comment sent to the spam folder automatically. I don't understand why some "anonymous" comments get through and others get canned, and I don't understand why Susanlynn was singled out for this most undeserved dishonor.

Thank you, Jane. Poor gringo often has his comments eaten as well.

I appreciate all you do to keep things running smoothly. The job of wading through spam is a big one. I know I'm not the only one who thanks you.

Poor Susanlynn has had this problem for a while. And Gringo too. Thanks, Jane, for digging through the spam and trying to fix some of these problems.

Hi,Jane. No problem. I have not had comments disappearing lately, but a few months ago,my IPad did an update and that's when my comments started disappearing. My daughter said that there were bugs in that update and that the next update should correct things which it did. So, I think the problem was my IPad...which I have since dropped on the floor, and I have been using my cheap Le Pen and having no disappearing comments.

Thank you Jane. I am the gringo who comments often on the Caray blog. Sometimes I have a lot to say and it takes me a long time to get everything down correctly. Typing with one finger I know isn't very efficient and using a dictionary to check and make sure that spelling is correct slows things down also. When I put in my effort to be a part of the novela bloggers, hit the publish button and see my comment appear only to have it disappear a few minutes later is, well beyond frustrating. I almost quit trying at one point because I just couldn't get a comment to stick.

Yes Susanlynn also had the same problem but I think that it got resolved after a computer upgrade on her part. In my case however, nothing had been changed in any way and so I couldn't figure out---why me?

Anyway I thank you for all of the effort that you have been putting into solving this problem. Looks like things will once again be happy out in novela blog land.

Sorry to hear about what's happened Susanlynn!

Thank you jane for this imfo. I posted a comment
Yesterday and it went through cause I did all that"prove your not a robot" stuff, verified it, and it worked I pushed publish, and bam there it goes. 2 or 3 minutes later it's gone. Did I say something she didn't like? No, it was the dam spam!!!!! Good. Morning, and thank you again letting us no. Dam spam:-[

From time to time, I used to have problems on this website and others with messages that didn't go through. Sometimes they just vanished into the misty purple, while at other times I'd be told to try again. But in either case, the message was usually gone, and I had to start over again. Then I discovered Lazarus, an amazing add-on for Firefox, Pale Moon, and Chrome browsers. It simply captures everything I write while using the browser, and if a message disappears, I just go into Lazarus, find it, copy it to the clipboard, and paste it in. I can't begin to count how many times it has saved me. You have a certain amount of control over what is saved, how long things are saved, etc. And, like most add-ons, it's free. I've now used it for several years, and I LOVE it. And no, this isn't spam, just a suggestion to help people who, like me, have had messages disappear.

Right now I've been unable to reach the Lazarus web site, but here is a link that will take you to the download site for Mozilla-based browsers like Firefox and Pale Moon: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/lazarus-form-recovery/. The link for the Chrome add-on is https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/lazarus-form-recovery/loljledaigphbcpfhfmgopdkppkifgno. I hope some people find this helpful.

Gee, Melinama/Jane/BlogMom -

You do such a great job and this site is a real staple in many of our lives--it's a darn shame that the spam trolls attack it! Just my two cents' worth of support and commiseration for you.....

Schoolmarm Jeanne
