La Sombra del Pasado #94 - Fri 6/26 - Stakes are raised
Don Antonio has set Em up in what, to Em, is a palatial suite. Don Antonio wants Em and Solitario working with a trainer ASAP. Sure, Em rides well, and Solitario is gorgeous, but it's been mostly talent so far. What Em needs is technique so he can keep improving before he starts competing against more experienced riders.
Severiano promotes Jacinto and tells him Melesio is fired "por metiche" (because he's a meddler) and he and his wife are outta there for being "malagradecidos" (ungrateful). And BTW, Jacinto's salary won't be going up, at least not until he proves he can handle the job. Oddly, Jacinto doesn't get the hint that that was a dismissal, and that's because he has important news to deliver to Sev--"Um…a bunch of the guys came by this morning and, uh…they quit." I had to pause to laugh for several moments, 'cause that was just so delicious. And then I had to do a fake screencap because I'd paused it on such a great facial expression of Alexis Ayala's.
Well, they don't agree with arresting Padre J and they're pissed. Well, whatever, says Sev, they're fired. He tells Jacinto to go find some new workers who won't think they're better than him (Sev). Nobody puts conditions on Sev! Outside his office, Jacinto and the maid share some "Yikes!" looks.
At the breakfast table, Cande tells Cris that Dominga and Melesio are fired…or, actually, they quit. Cris doesn't take the news that Sev won't be pressing charges as quite the magnanimous gesture that Cande intended. Cris remembers that he was giving his parents the silent treatment until they release Padre J, so he declares all conversation finished. Cande tells him not to be childish. Shut up, Cande…don't make me agree with you. She says she's working on his dad and whines that she's not his enemy.
Uriel is curious about Irma's absence at the breakfast table. Mari says she went off to talk to Lola early. Uriel wants Mari to quit embarrassing the family with all her petty dramas. So whines and tries to make him feel guilty, but Uriel isn't buying it. Nor is he buying the "Lola says mom likes her better!" story, though he looks thoughtful at the theory that Lola's the one who stole the money.
Irma confronts Lola about saying that Irma loves her better. Lola says no way did she say that…she swears! And she's upset that Mari is manipulating things again. Lola is grateful that Irma has been like a mother to her, but she would never say that Irma loves her better! Dominga and Melesio come into Irma's store and tell Lola that they got fired.
Renato tells Aldonza and Adelina that they've done everything they can, and now they need to wait. Cris shows up and hears that Padre J's pretty much screwed until his parents drop the charges. Cris says he'll pay bail. Dominga and Melesio show up and Cris says he already heard about them leaving, being fired…Dom and Mel don't agree on what it was, but they're not living/working at Las Animas anymore. Cris will miss them. Hey, Cris, you wouldn't have to miss them at Las Animas if you were, oh, I don't know…NOT LIVING THERE ANYMORE!
Tomas is all decked out in altar boy duds, which Lulu tells him he has to wear ALL the time, not just for Mass. Plus, he needs to study the Manual de Monaguillo (Altar Boy Manual) and be prepared to be quizzed on it. And no, it's not out on DVD. He's not even a full-fledged altar boy yet…first he has to study the manual and pass their quizzes and then he can be promoted. For now, there's a bucket of water for him to…mop floors with? Lulu leaves and Pru walks in. She finds that Tomas' new duds have stolen her will to sin. Maybe it was the lace.
Predictably, Aldonza invites Mel and Dominga to come live at El Santuario. They all head out there, but Cris is going to stay and see if he can talk to Padre J.
Pru bought Tomas a cell phone…and she also came to tell him she missed him. He's been thinking about her a lot, too. He's realized that it's not just sex between them and he thinks he's in love with her. Pru is turned off by the idea that he's on Padre J's side. Especially after he pulled that stunt that's going to screw up her daughter's relationship with Cris. Tomas says that's between Val and Cris and Val is a big girl who can fight her own battles with her own claws, and she has some long-ass claws! Pru takes offense that someone who claims to love her could say such a thing. Tomas may be in love, but he's not so blind he can't see he truth. Pru says she's not so blind as to fall in love with a mechanic's son who's in training to be an altar boy. "And don't think you're such a know it all. The only place you're of any use is in bed. Know your place!" Tomas is wounded. I'm angry on his behalf. That's just a shitty thing to say. Takes one to know one, Pru.
Cris wants to talk to Renato, but Renato doesn't think they really need to talk. He's not stupid. He knows what happened and he knows it changes everything. "Chill out. The last thing I want is to pressure Aldonza. I'm not going to do it when all she wants is for her uncle to be released so he can marry you." He agrees to see if they'll let Cris visit the Padre.
Cande visits Doña Marga's Dulceria (candy shop) to buy some chocolates for Cris. But wouldn't you know it? They're out of his favorite ones. And Doña Marga is out of paper for wrapping things up as gifts. And she doesn't have change for the cash Cande's waving around. In fact, she doesn't sell candy to people who have priests arrested. So maybe Ms. Cande needs to find herself another candy shop to frequent.
Adriano is in a rush to pack and leave. He's finished his job and gotten paid. Flavia gathers her courage and says she won't go with him. She's going back to Santa Lucia. Adriano threatens to go find Ray and hurt him if she won't come with him.
Cande is strutting back to her truck when she and El Mudo are attacked by a vicious gang of street urchins throwing tomatoes. I can neither confirm nor deny that I hired said urchins to commit this despicable act. I could attempt to deny that I laughed my ass off watching it, but you'd know I was lying, so what's the point.
Time for another installment of The Wisdom of El Justiciero Divino. Padre J tells Cris that a Padre's gotta do what a Padre's gotta do. And Cris shouldn't judge his parents. They think they're doing what's best for him, even though they're doing it RONG. He did this so Cris and Aldonza can get married. He invited Cris' parents to make peace with his family, and he's going to continue working on that for as long as he remains the parish priest. Not that he thinks he'll be allowed to stay, even after he gets out of jail. I wish he'd also clarified to Cris that "don't judge your parents" doesn't mean "keep living with them and letting them control your life." Just in case Cris doesn't know that.
Mel and Dominga get shown to a large room at El Santuario that we've never seen before. Dominga will help Adelina with the house and Melesio can take over Emmanuel's jobs (fighting off Lola and Mari?). When they're left alone, Dominga lets Aldonza know that Valeria is living at El Santuario. Here we go. I smell a break up.
Cande comes stomping and fuming into Las Animas…she's got bits of tomato on the shoulder of her shawl. She's screaming at Sev about the tomato-ing and how Doña Marga won't sell her chocolates and her own son won't speak to her. She insists that Sev have Padre J released or she'll release SEV. That's right, this is her house and if Sev doesn't drop the charges, he can get out. We all wondered what would push Cande to divorce Sev and now we know. He reminds her that he runs the stables and the stables are what provide for everyone. "Then we'll all lose, won't we. Make your choice: peace with Jeronimo or war with me." Damnit, Cande, stop making me like you!
Aldonza tells Adelina that Dominga and Mel are all settled in. Adelina asks where they'll get the money for two salaries. I'll give you one guess what the answer is. That's right. Renato's pockets. And then she whines about Val moving in at Las Animas and probably wanting to move in to Cris' bed. Adelina warns Aldonza not to behave like her usual irrationally jealous self. Well, I'd say in this case, the suspicion might be warranted, 'cause Val can't be trusted. But with all these magically appearing rooms at El Santuario, maybe she needs to invite Cris to live in one. Or buy him a door alarm. Or get him one of those strings of braided garlic to wear around his neck at night.
So, what's it gonna be, Sev? Toña, the maid comes running in, telling Cande to come right away…so she can see Cris limping into the house, aided by El Mudo. He lost control of the cane getting out of the truck. Cande shrieks and fusses as a cast of thousands help Cris into the house.
Aldonza, ever wise about relationships that aren't her own, worries about Lola breaking Pato's heart because she's still in love with Emmanuel. She hopes life is finally treating Emmanuel better.
The cast of thousands help Cris into bed and refuse to give him even a second to rest. Sev, at a glance from Valeria, hustles everyone out of the room so she can use her wiles on him. Which apparently consists of whining that now her dad will have to come see him and, he's just being sooooo insufferable lately, and oh, here, let me prod your wound 'cause I'm a doctor's daughter, so I'm qualified to feel for potentially opened wounds through pants. Gross…and OW! When she's done fondling his leg, she goes to bring him some tea, even though he doesn't want it. Cris, so help me if you saluted that crappy excuse for a medical exam…!
While Em and Solitario train, Don Antonio gets a call about an upcoming competition. He says he's training a new rider…yes, the one who won at San Miguel…he probably can't be ready so soon, but he might as well try. I'm struggling not to be suspicious about him, and in all fairness, he hasn't done anything overly skeevy.
Adelina had been holding on to Aldonza's wedding ring and she gives it back to her now. And then initiates what I'm sure was intended to be a very hopeful, uplifting conversation about how Aldonza is going to get her groove back. Unfortunately, it's too mired in clichés about doing one's duty as a wife, sex being equated with being married "for real," being the ideal wife, and getting over the sexual trauma by sheer force of will. Thanks, show. I know "I'm thinking it's time I seek some professional help in coping with my trauma, because I'd very much like to be able to enjoy a fulfilling sex life, for my own reasons--not because my husband expects it of me" isn't quite as moving as…actually, no, wait, I would have found that pretty damn moving.
Agent Benitez from Santa Lucia shows up to arrest Adriano and Flavia, but the guy taking care of the place where they were staying says they've left already.
Unfortunately, Adriano and Flavia just missed the bus. He blames Flavia for taking too long to pack. As he's buying a ticket for the next bus and ranting at Flavia, she's eyeing a pair of cops nearby.
Silvia, wearing a short red dress with a skirt that looks like it just might be twirly, gets an update from Renato when he comes back to the house/office. He talked to Sev's lawyer, and Nava is going to move that bail be denied. Silvia and Ren agree that the judge probably won't agree to that, but it will mean that Padre J's release will be delayed while they drag things out. Sev's determined to make Padre J's life impossible. In other news, he's mopey because now Aldonza will never be his. He asks, since she vowed to help him with Aldonza, what he can really do at this point. "Maybe you could keep Padre in prison so he never marries them?" Ren laughs and says he did think of that, but no. Before, he might have done it, but not now. Not after the big fight he and Silvia had. She was right--he was crazy and couldn't see that he had crossed the line from love to obsession. Silvia says he's not the only one and maybe he shouldn't be so hard on himself. Renato says he's not going to give up on her. Not until she and Cris are married in the church, and not a minute before that.
Tomas calls Pru, but she's at a Cheater's Club meeting and she ignores him. Lulu catches him and chides him for making phone calls when he should be working. He shares with Lulu his woes about his girlfriend who he just had a fight with and how he never thought he was the kind of guy to fall in love. He's feeling pretty low and thinks that if Padre J hadn't taken him in, he really wouldn't have a single person who cares about him. Lulu can't resist his sad face and open arms, and for the life of me, I don't even think Tomas is hugging her with ulterior motives. Are we seeing some genuine personal growth here?
Back at the Cheater's Club lunch, where actual food is eaten because cheaters are baaaaaaaaad. Pru complains that Padre J has dressed her bad boy Tomas in good boy duds and it totally killed her passion for him. Plus he said nasty stuff about her daughter. And he said he was in love with her. The nerve!
Aldonza goes to Raymundo's grave to thank him for his help and tell him he'll be moved to his favorite place soon.
Joaquin wonders if Adelina is happy because Aldonza has given up on exhuming her dad. Nope, she's just happy to be there, enjoying the moment with Joaquin and Ray. And she's been thinking about what Joaquin said about letting whatever's going to happen, happen. WHAT?! Who is this person?! Joaquin is happy to see her happy. Adelina wants to walk out and see the fields and then go to the waterfall.
Nava informs Sev that he finished paying off Adriano. In small payments, like Sev told him to.
Toña comes in with Cande's suit…and the bad news that Sev has already left for the day, before Cande could rope him into a discussion he probably didn't want to have. She dismisses Toña and calls Sev's cell phone. He has until this afternoon to comply with her demands or it's war.
Antonio and Flavia are arguing outside the bus station. She's begging him to let her go, but he keeps refusing. When the cops show up to arrest him, he pulls out a gun and takes Flavia hostage.
Sev is in the police station, ignoring his phone and barely listening to The One Cop In All Of Santa Lucia telling him that if he doesn't "ratificar" (confirm) his accusation, they can't press charges. So, what's it going to be, Sev?

I love when you use this line.
"Hey, Cris, you wouldn't have to miss them at Las Animas if you were, oh, I don't know…NOT LIVING THERE ANYMORE!"
IKR! Word.
"Tomas says that's between Val and Cris and Val is a big girl who can fight her own battles with her own claws, and she has some long-ass claws!"
Love this translation.
"I could attempt to deny that I laughed my ass off watching it, but you'd know I was lying, so what's the point."
I could deny I laughed my ass, but I'm not going to bother either.
"I wish he'd also clarified to Cris that "don't judge your parents" doesn't mean "keep living with them and letting them control your life."
WORD. Grow a pair, Cris-no-balls.
And I am right there with you on the scene with Adelina. It was very disappointing to see how they handled that.
Thank you, Kat for such a rollicking good recap.
So glad Melesio and Dominga are taking refuge at El Santuario, hopefully this means the end of them taking guff from "Satan and his Handmaiden"...
J in Oregon
J- I hope all is well with your pet :(
Gracias, Sara. I can't believe we've come to this point where Cris' parents are doing things like messing with DNA test results to back up their lies...and his response is to give them the silent treatment? What is he, 12?
And seriously, Adelina asks "how are you going to pay these salaries" and Aldonza responds with "Oh I'll ask Renato."
Just shoot me.
Then again, Pabs and Esme had two weddings and that wasn't enough for them to have a convincing relationship.
To clarify...Aldonza's degree is in Agronomy? And nowhere in any of her classes did they discuss budgets? Profit margins? Startup costs? I could be ok with Renato bankrolling everything if she was contributing her expertise, but it doesn't even seem like she's doing that. She just keeps incurring more expenses, Renato keeps paying them, and even if they manage to grow a crop in the day and a half left on the lease, I'm going to have a hard time believing that whatever they grow will net them a profit.
Was that cranky? I guess that was cranky? Let me go back to thinking of Cande getting tomatoes thrown at her...ahhhh, that's better!
"a Padre's gotta do what a Padre's gotta do"
"don't judge your parents" doesn't mean "keep living with them and letting them control your life."
"Renato's pockets"
Cande was almost in the car and a tomato hit the back of her head, I lost it, good shot.
I've grown accustom to Aldonza's, drug induced trance like demeanor and flippant solution to every problem, "Renato's Pockets" but now Cris and his pout it out. With everything his parents have done and he is still in that house, stupid.
Renato - if they are still married in 10 years, maybe, just maybe
PJ - pfft, this ain't no lions den
Severiano - forget you, I'll just move in with Aldonza
Cris - what, no happy ending
Aldonza - Renato wouldn't dare deny me
Cande - La Tomatina is in August
Flavia - he won't shoot, he loves me
Mari - and she killed Abelardo too
Natasha hit a bunch of posts a few days ago and in the wee hours this morning. I'm about to email the team now to get it removed from old posts.
I guess the spammers now know to do it before 7 days are up. Jane moderates after that.
I was an altar boy back in the days when Latin was used, so there was a lot of memorization to get ready to be able to serve Mass. But we didn't have to wear our cassocks and surplices full time or mop the church floor. I think Lulu is somehow pulling something else in an effort to rehabilitate Tomas, and it seems to be working!
Since all Cande thinks about is how she is regarded in the SL social pecking order, the angry workers and town people have hit on the perfect way to sway her. I'll bet the horse operation won't be worth ten cents on the dollar in about a month, what with Mel gone, the shunning from towns people, and the labor stoppage.
Cris, using the silent treatment? Geez! Sara, you're right: Grow a pair. (And while you're at it, wipe that gullible expression off your face.
Val fondling Cris's thigh was just so stupid. He should have been screaming, "Get the hell out of my room, and don't ever touch me like that again." But mostly he should get a room in town.
Thanks again, 5ft. You wove this together so seamlessly and decorated it with you wonderful snark.
David
That examination of Val's was just bizarre, wasn't it?
May I just say cathyx that I am glad someone else dislikes spam as much as I do?
"Don't make me agree with you" -- yes! Candela has to be completely fed up by now and she still doesn't know the worst of it. And we flies on the wall are still the only ones who know that Sev killed Simoneta.
It baffles me how Candela could endure 20+ years of all this hatred and resentment. She should have ulcers by now. Oh, wait... maybe she isn't even human.
I'm feeling a weird mix with this TN. It's moving along at a good speed at this point, but I'm so disappointed in:
1) Cris not having already moved out
2) Aldonza jumping straight to Renato's pockets AGAIN. Really, Al? Really? It is honestly making me dislike her. And I don't often dislike the protags, but there's very little that I actually like about her.
3) Adelina not calling Al out on Ren paying for everything. I didn't like the way she spoke about sex, but I am glad she brought it up. I was hoping Aldonza might suggest getting some help for it, but...sigh. Whatever.
4) Mari...Ugh, it's all too much. I need a break.
Quick note: the room Mel and Dom are in is Aldonza's parents's room.
There were far too many excellent lines to list them all but "Cris doesn't take the news that Sev won't be pressing charges as quite the magnanimous gesture that Cande intended", "Cande tells him not to be childish. Shut up, Cande…don't make me agree with you" and "She finds that Tomas' new duds have stolen her will to sin. Maybe it was the lace" were marvelous.
My favorite scene was Cande being pelted by tomatoes. I say nominate those young lads as “model citizens of the day”.
Because the actress is so good and endearing, I tend to forget while Pru is no Cande, she is a cruel, uncaring and vindictive person. Lest I forget her stoning Aldonza, “The only place you're of any use is in bed. Know your place!" reminded me. Sigh.
It's true Aldonza shouldn't be leaning on Renato so heavily but in fairness he deserves it. He does everything she wants, is always there and available to her, takes whatever dismissals she doles out and he still has hopeless hope they might get together.
Now that the shunning has begun, Cande understandably has pulled the "I am lord and master" card on Sev. Even though her reasons were purely selfish, I'm for whatever gets the good Padre released. I hope he doesn't lose his parish or get transferred, as he is the heart of this story. And you are right UA, no one knows that Sev killed Simoneta. I wonder what Cande's reaction will be.
Diana
Sara, you take first place in nicknames today. Cris-no-balls. LOL!!!
Also, I noticed after reading these comments, that Natasha posted a spam here too. And Sara, spam annoys me too. Especially when it has no point but to just annoy. Why bother?
Someone commented a while back about how many rapes Sev might have committed over the years. I don't think there were any other than Aldonza, Simoneta, or that prostitute, as any others would have carried a major risk of discovery. He had a specific motive to rape Aldonza, which was to get her, Roberta, and Adelina out of SL. Now it looks like he is casting a lecherous eye on Valeria who is either clueless or will be complicit if she thinks this will get her marriage to Cristobal. When he sniffed her clothes I almost lost my dinner.
Hellashelle is right. Mel and Dom were given the master bedroom, that belonged to Ray and Rob, and where Eman was born. Nice to see them in El Santuario.
I could not agree with you all more on Cris and his inability to man up and get out. I understood before when he 1) didn't know how depraved his parents are; 2) didn't know how determined Val is to get back into his pants and that his parent are trying to help her; and 3) was immobile. But now? Really, Cris? And that "massage" near his crotch? He is NOT that naive.
SARA, DIVA: thanks for your concern. My handsome kitty-boy won't be feeling any more pain after today :o(
J in O
I still can't imagine him in other way, but I'm nervous since you said he was such a bastard on other shows.
Diana
Jose Elias Moreno is the lead director of Sombra, so I guess he had his pick of roles. I only know him from AB and Pasion, but this should not prevent him expanding his repertoire.
It is overdue for him to leave his parents' house. Especially now that Dominga isn't there to take care of him during his recovery. But with 43 remaining episodes I guess the writers will give her at least one more evil move.
Aldonza is running this show. She should not have to ask Renato how to fit Dom and Mel into the budget. She should be just as well versed in it as Renato.
Excellent recap!
My favorite part...as Cande was getting into the vehicle, El Mudo pulled her back out and then pushed her inside.
My least favorite...Adelina when she encourages Aldi in one scene and then sabotages in the next...boo! hiss!
J in O
But, please, don't take the blame for this. " I can neither confirm nor deny that I hired said urchins..." We will all stand up and admit we took a patio pool for the pay-off. And it was worth every wasted tomato. Cheers from the patio!
But honestly, I'm starting to be VERY frustrated with our lovebirds. Well, more than usual.
First, no earthly reason Cris is still living in the manse after everything he's learned that has happened. If he can pay off Padre's bail, he can get a room at the hotel if he doesn't want to move in with his fiancé/wife/whatever she is. And on top of that, letting Val do the feel up...no, that was just no. Starting to think he isn't the brightest tack in the room or he can't cut those apron strings. Maybe he likes the good life? It's something because it now makes no sense.
As for Allie, I'm sure in her thinking, which is starting to make my head hurt, she thinks Ren is just her business partner so she can keep running to his till. But seriously, after the kisses which only happened a short time ago, she KNOWS this guy is her partner because he still has feelings for her and wants to stick around. He's partly to blame, he lets it happen too, but she needs to stop this. AGAIN, future hubby has cash apparently, you know the bail-out thing, so why doesn't HE PAY FOR DOM AND MEL!! Didn't even cross her mind...
Lord help me, no wonder these two are fated. The will sail off into the sunset in clueless bliss.
And to the writers of this show---if that talk by Ade to Allie was your way to work through Allie getting over her rape and issues, you know, need to just power through...SHAME ON YOU! All I can say without getting really worked up.
Still hoping all is going positive for E-man. I need positive right now in this TN.
I'm voting Sev caves, he won't want to lose what he has. Cande should realize that kicking that idiot to the curb would actually get the townsfolk on her side...but whatever.
Done with Pru. I'm starting to warm to the new Tomas, and he needs to go far away from her now. Lord she was insufferable last night.
Daisynjay
Yes, Renato seems stupid to hang on but in fairness to him, Aldonza hasn't gone three days without dumping Cris and running to him. Cris and Aldonza are married, yet have not consummated the marriage nor is there any talk of cohabitation, divorce proceedings are currently underway and Val is living in the house with Cris. Pretty good odds she'll be sobbing on his shoulder soon.
Is Anon at 10:59 someone who forgot to sign their name? Otherwise, that post is going as well.
Gracias, David! I was an altar girl, post Latin. Personally, I always thought the boys looked really cute in their full gear, sometimes distractingly so. I don't know what Pru's whining about.
Gracias, Urban Anthropologist! I bet Cande grinds her teeth and night and has to take something for her blood pressure. She can't be human, with those braids every day, always perfect, always looking exactly the same. It's not natural.
J in O, sorry for Balthazar's journey over the rainbow bridge, but glad to hear you had many good years together.
Gracias, Diana! The tomatoes were so delightfully unexpected...who does that anymore? It was such a perfect contrast with Cande's need to keep composure...how the hell do you do that when there are flying tomatoes coming at you?! I'm slipping the kids a $20 to TP her house next....
The relationship between Aldonza and Renato just keeps going from bad to worse with every new development. The only thing saving it from going completely over the edge right now is Renato's sudden and miraculous decision to behave like a mature adult and quit actively trying to sabatoge Aldonza and Cris. And, really, what else could they do with the character, unless they were willing to turn him into an antagonist? So intstead, Aldonza looks like a mooch and Renato looks like a pushover and neither one looks like they have any business sense whatsoever.
I loved your recap and especially, “Silvia, wearing a short red dress with a skirt that looks like it just might be twirly,” I don’t know who started the twirly skirt description, but it really fits so many of our novela gals, hey...and some real gals too! The expression in your screen grab was priceless. Thanks Diva, you are a master recapper!
Although I’ve been the first to defend our reluctant central lovers, I have to agree with everyone, I think that Chris’ move home is just plain nutty and goofy. All the writers had to do was create a (fake) medical device that Chris needed for his rehab that required him to stay or spend time at home. His hobbling back to Las Animas would have fit that scenario perfectly. Writers, you can do better that this. Of course logically, any galan worth his salt would stay with his WIFE in her ROOM! Oh dear.....
Aldonza appears selfish and uses Renato, but creating balance in life takes time. Many young people are users, sad to say, until they are cut off from their money sources. Aldonza is starting a business and it isn’t unusual for the unexperienced “entrepreneur” (ha!) to have a high “burn rate” and spend too much money on the front end. It is up to Renato to put a stop to the bottomless “cash flow.” (Throwing in two bit businesses terms to give my comment more credibility!) Due to her kindnesses to others, Aldonza has become the homeless shelter of Santa L and not many of her guests are putting in eight hour work days yet! I’m really more concerned about her basic plan to plant and harvest something (?) on land that she is just renting from a hostile landlord for only one year.
Love it that the actors use “Caray” from time to time in this novela.
O in J sorry about your cat, I have had to make that decision myself and it is a logical but still sad one....
I'm sure Doris is good, I'll send a heads up and check today. She has been very busy as of late!
Urban: "When he sniffed her clothes I almost lost my dinner." I hear that! While it was done well in the sense of planting the idea and then slowly turning up the "ick!" factor until there could be no question...that was NOT PLEASANT to watch!
Gracias, Vivi! Oh, there was glee...there was so much glee! I don't know what I did to deserve this episode, but if I ever find out, I'll do it again!
Gracias, PBN! I'll have to go back and re-watch that scene...oh, who am I kidding, I was going to do that anyway!...and review the logistics. I was probably laughing too hard to notice all the finer details. Thanks for filling me in :D
tofie, "Adelina is playing a great game though. She has everyone believing she is some sweetheart." I don't want to dislike her, I really don't, but they taking her fear of being found out and twisting it. I always sympathized with the fear, but this has gone on too damn long and burning the death certificate, replaceable or not, was going too far.
Speaking of PJ. Vivi said last week that PJ R Us and totally agree with her and love how in this TN we get a front row seat, a say and a hand in foiling the devil Severiano. Clever because he is not romantically attached but is involved in assisting the protagonist romance, not simply a moral counter weight but a ramrod of justice without a slap or a shot.
Doris is enjoying the fantastic weather of northern Michigan. We’ll bombard her with our beanie orders when she returns.......
Can you guess my word?
Urban, I know I can't do braids that tight and that smooth on my own head. I lack the shoulder flexibility. Or a detachable head. Maybe I could do them on someone else, but it sure wouldn't be painless.
Gracias, La Paloma! Oh, they are fruit, aren't they? I have such a hard time not thinking of them as vegetables. Hey, maybe that's what Aldonza could grow quickly. From what I hear, people always end up with far more than they know what to do with.
Love it. Love Padre.
tofie, you're not wrong. We're cutting Adelina a lot of slack because she's nominally a "good" character. She's not investing in making Aldonza miserable, which is what sets her apart from Sev and Cande. All she wants is to keep Aldonza from finding out the extent of her lies. Some of that I can overlook, because I don't happen to think that knowing how her father really died is going to be positive for Aldonza or help her handle Sev. But she and Emmanuel both deserve to know about each other. Even if Aldonza could be perfectly happy not knowing; even if Emmanuel goes on to become a world champion rider; even though knowing doesn't erase all the harm that was already done. They deserve to know. For someone who isn't actively trying to cause pain, she's done a terrific job of hurting people. I can't imagine what she could accomplish if she actually did want to make Aldonza miserable or keep her away from Cris, but she'd probably do a damn sight better than Cande, with a lot less fuss.
But yes, burning a death certificate and actively thwarting Aldona's plans for Ray's body are antagonist behaviors and we are cutting her a lot of slack and we probably shouldn't.
And I like Adelina....but I am most upset that she seems to determined to keep Aldonza and Em away from the truth. It pisses me off. He deserves to know that he does have a family. And dammit........that's her sister's child!!!!!!!
He's an astonishingly attractive fellow who needs to have the confidence to match. Adelina is robbing him of that by preventing Aldonza from learning the truth. I agree that nobody except Dame Justice benefits from the disclosure of the truth of Raimundo's death, but this aspect of it is unforgivable.
I agree that Aldonza and Cris both love Emmanuel, but they only seem to think about him when it's convenient for them. They treat Lola the same way. It makes it difficult for me to consider them "friends." Maybe if Emmanuel were upgraded to "brother" they'd move him up a little higher on the priority list.
She has been lying to both Padre and Allie, albeit with different facts. Padre deserves to know the truth about his brother's death, Allie is a big girl that should know the facts and depriving E-man of siblings and an identity is beyond the pale. To me, and this is just me, she claims this is all about protecting Allie, but now that she is an adult, it seems Adeline is more concerned about protecting herself. She's dug herself such a deep hole, I think she's petrified now what will happen if she admits to what she knows.
That talk with Allie was odd too--great one to give marital advice. She seems to always want to just keep things private, suck it up, power through, don't talk to anyone...blah blah. Why has she NEVER suggested Allie seek real help for her rape or issues? Because I honestly don't think she believes she should. She is projecting that sacrificial lamb attitude she has on her niece. So wrong.

You know, the more I watch sev and cande, it seems that they might be loosing their grip or stronge hold in their universe. Their house of cards is slowly cracking. This will be slow and painfull for these two strangely warped people.
When cande went to get chocolate candy, that woman revolted "we don't sell to people who had the padre arrested". I am so going to enjoy watching their universe crumble around them. the same townspeople she turned against Roberta and Adelina and aldonza, is coming back to bite them in the ass. What goes around comes around, and sometimes the sting is worse when it comes back around. OUCH!!!!!!
Don't you wish the characters could hear the fans thought bubbles"move out of the house cris, move out so you wont be controlled by your crazy momma and daddy, and twisted baby moma".
Adonza you better not go into your"I will release you cris so you can be a father to your child" (mantra), I think thats the right phrase for it. They've gone through so much to be together, uncle j is in jail trying to get them back together. And its 2015, he can still be a father and not be married to crazy baby moma. Not the year has anything to do with it. And the seed is not his anyway.
Moma Dom and popa Mel (Bless their Hearts)!!!!!!!!! are the only grandparent presence in cris' life and they're still lookin after him like grandparents should when mom and dad have flown over the coocoo's nest.
LaDiva- was that a typo up in the recap when you said aldonza invited dom and mel to stay at El Santaurio? I think you said that other place where satan and his woman abide.
Its ok we all typo every now and again. Still love the recap:-)
I think this was covered yesterday or the day before and know I read it and said aloud how stupid it was, but I don't think I actually said it "aloud" on the patio.
But--YES! I million times yes! This is the kind of thing that drives me batty. Are the writers a bunch of idiots, or do they think we are?
It's about time for another incidence of Confessional Abuse.
Here's the thread:

But I guess technically it hasn't been proven true...yet.
I was the one who mentioned a prediction from May. She was asking me if I had inadvertently remembered one of the deleted spoilers!
I'm sorry I brought it up. Sad face :-(
MEA CULPA!!!!
Anyway, I'm pretty sure that Flavia won't be around because they don't do divorces when there are children involved. So Flavia has to go if Adelina is going to end up with Joaquin. (and no one better tell me about some TN that defied that rule, it's a general rule that is applied generally, I know there are exceptions to every TN rule). Sheesh!
I don't feel bad for Flavia either, Sara, but I feel bad for Ray. He barely understands what's going on as it is.
Flavia was stupid from the start. She had a good looking loyal sweet man with the cutest little boy, and she threw it away for a hawt bad boy with no future. Not that that deserves a death sentence, but it does in TNs.
Anyhoo...Flavia's death sentence. I get it. I understand that under current TN statute, a couple cannot divorce when there are children and if one spouse is supposed to be with someone else then someone has to die. I do just wish that TNs could modernize a little? Is that what I'm meaning?
I get "a life for a life" so if you kill someone you're ultimately doomed, but I don't like it when someone is doomed if they haven't been super evil.
Flavia has been stupid. And I do sometimes wish stupid people would go away. So yeah. Buh-bye Flavia.
Meh. There are hotter bad boys. Adriano doesn't do a lot for me. Tomas is another story. RAWR.
Thank you wonderful recappers for keeping me up to date. Mostly miss the shows, but do record them.
Thank goodness the story is picking up again. Want to see Eman really go places and hope he is not being set-up for something terrible. And for heaven's sake someone tell him who he is. Still rooting for Renato, Silvia and Pato. I continue to think Eman and Silvia would be perfect together. I have given up on Chris and agree with someone who commented Aldonza is getting annoying.
Good weekend Peeps. See you all Monday!
I'd have to see Adriano in a good character to decide.
Flavia doesn't deserve to die, but I won't tear up about it if she does. The TN laws are firm, but Sombra could be a game changer (to quote 90s McDonald's marketing: Hey! It could happen!)
I agree with whoever said that young people/first time entrepeneurs are often a little...confused as to how to budget their money (honestly, I'm still trying to figure it out!). But I take issue with the nonchalant way Aldonza is handling Dom and Mel's salaries. "::Shrug:: I'll talk to Renato about it...Anyhoo, Val's at LA and it's bugging me!..." I'd like to see a little worry, a little concern that she's dropping two more dependants on someone who's about the same age as her. She says it like it's no big deal, Ren's handled all the other bills, I'm sure he'll pick this one up too. Same with dinner a couple of days ago. "Next time I'll get it. You always get it, but next time, I'm totally getting it. Oh, you! No, you stop! You hang up first. No, you hang up first!" That's how it came off to me.
I think the police have actually been doing a pretty good job in this TN. They follow up on things, they go out of town to check things out, they have a circle of people to ask larger than the main cast. I was actually surprised when the fairly unhelpful detective didn't overhear Dom confessing to her role in the forgery while they were standing in the police station, and in most TNs I would've expected him not to react.
"Sara, without their shirts on too. I mean, for a thorough assessment."
I hadn't thought of that, but I think you are very right. I want to be thorough. I need to take EVERYTHING into account.

Hilarious. You are the Naughty Melon's nightly comedienne. We can't offer much in salary. Or benefits. But you can drink all you want. Whaddaya say? You in?
Back on DQTQTQ we started getting mean comments from Anons. It got worse on La Gata. They bordered on being attacks.
Now we are getting spoiler posts from Anons. At least two in recent memory.
Any time I get a notification and it says "Anonymous", I get a little scared.
I understand why a person would want to post anonymously. It just makes some of us a little nervous. It does bother me that I feel this way. I hate that the jerk Anons are ruining it for legit contributors and legit Anons.
The Sombra just wants the Patio to be a friendly place where no one has to worry about spoilers or attacks on the recappers/other commenters (because that makes people uncomfortable.)
And honestly, I wish there was some way to encourage Anons to pick an even made up name. It feels more personal to me and I want to address people by name.
Carp. Now I just made us sound like Cheers.

I got the exact same vibe. I think it's why it annoyed me.
It's bad writing. Or is it bad acting?
My word of the day is scenes.
I do like Michelle, but agree with you that she seems uncomfortable in her scenes with Cristobal. I do like Pablo, but found him most believable in UFCS. He's not knocking my socks off here.
Not sure I had a word of the day. I'm sure it will happen when I'm not trying. :-)

Diva, glad you think that I can still twirl a skirt.
The problem with the (predicted) death of Falvia is that she seemed on the verge of repenting (think PJ would use this word), her choices had given her such incredible pain. You could see it in her face and body language. I would like the preferred, well worn novela scene where she dies conveniently as she rushes back to be the parent she should have been. Sim’s quick park bench advice resonated with Flavia, she changed after that.
Triple read this post to prevent a word of the day situation, which is so much better when involuntary, which maximizes ridiculousness.

Although, if I had to be locked in a room with one of the two of them, I'd pick Adriano over Flavia!
And what happened to lola when she found her mother in the coffee table box? I thought she'd be in shock when that happened. I may have missed an episode. I even went seaching a few back and couldn't find it. Maybe it hasn't floated up yet. That was a dream she had. Only 30, 40 episodes left?!?!
About Michelle, I don't think she has a problem acting opposite Pablo Lyle, they both seem very comfortable to me in scenes where they have to show affection.
I think Aldonza has strong conflicting feelings about Cristobal. She self sabotages their relationship at every opportunity and she's not comfortable in it for all the reasons we already know about. I also think she has no idea how to deal with men who show interest in her due to several reasons: because she was told from a young age that she was a slut like her mother from gossipers, because she had no good examples in her aunt and mother and because she has no experience due to her self imposed isolation.
But her character has always made sense to me. I don't see her as selfish or a user. In fact, I've always been on her side when she ends things with Cristobal, since it's obvious to me that she is not ready to be in a relationship with him, or another guy even, as much as she may want to be. It's the show's writers who frustrate me with their lack of acknowledgement that what Aldonza needs to help her deal with her traumas is not a romantic relationship but a therapist.
Aldonza also makes more sense to me than Cristobal, who keeps pushing this relationship from the begining as if there's nothing else he cares about. He doesn't have any work ambitions or any desire to become independent from his parents and while it's common in Mexico for adult childrent to live with their parents, their level of meddling in his life is absurd. He works for them too, and he works where he lives so he doesn't even have that part of his life completely for himself. And it's not like we've been shown that he feels passionate about the land or the horses. He left it all when he thought his chances with Aldonza were over, but he came back when he learned they weren't sibilings.
And it's odd because, for all he knows, the biggest obstacle between Aldonza and him are his parents, so his independence from them is what he should be seeking. At least until he realizes that there's a pattern in her behavior that makes her leave him at any chance she gets and he starts asking why, instead of keep pushing for her to take him back and stay together. Because that's what makes her look cold and uninterested while he ends up looking pathetic.

Cathyx - Word, girl. I posted the same thing a few days ago. Cris has been all in from jump. Aldonza...not so much. It makes it hard for me to root for her, but Cris has been solid on her, so I can stay in it for him. imo, Michelle's ready and raring to be a bad girl; it's written all over her smirk. But a lot of actors say it's more fun to play the villain than the good girl, so I wouldn't be surprised if she did feel more comfortable with her angry, bitter scenes than her love ones. What's more, love scenes can be really hard to sell, I think, because they can so easily feel/become cheesy. I put some of that on her, but I put a little more of it on the writing/direction. I think we've all seen many a bad actor portraying a love scene, but to do that, well or terribly, you have to have love scenes. A and C have had a handful, but not enough to sell me on this grand romance, especially with a tentative actress and an odd lack of non-verbal moments (where are the longing looks? the side-long glances and secret shared smiles?).
I miss THAT guy.
I think we can ALL agree with you that Cris's living situation has gotten ridiculous. Once he found out/suspected his parents of CHANGING A FREAKING DNA TEST TO MAKE HIM THINK HE WAS MARRIED TO HIS HALF SISTER, then he should've gone the heck up out of there. Everything before is small potatoes: just an overprotective mom, an egotistical dad, some extra sensitive feelings all around. But the sibling lie was crazy and malicious. Plus the Val move, plus the Val grope.
Is he scared to co-habitate with Aldonza because he doesn't know how to handle her issues with sex and even less so with the full cast also living in her house?
Sara, yep, Michelle is a baddie in ECDLP. I've seen her there and as a sweet nerdy girl in Camaleones. I thought she did a good job in both.
Jarocha
I don't hate her here. There's just something that keeps me from being all in with Cris and Aldonza.
As an interesting note, ECDLP was written by the writers of El Manantial, the original version of LSDP.
Jarocha
She does do her gushing scenes really well. You know... When she's gushing about Cris to Adelina or Lola.
I've enjoyed their smooching and lovey dovey scenes, and I enjoyed their early flirting scenes (like the one when she was swimming and he rode up). But I would like more scenes of them sharing their hopes/dreams/fears, planning a future together (not just talking about a wedding), trying to figure things out together, and plotting and working together. We've seen this a very few times. Times that jump to mind include: the evening they chatted in front of her house, just before Sever started the fire; when Cris told her about their parents' affair and they started putting some of the pieces together about their family feud; when she confessed she had been raped and they spoke about their desire to have a family in the future; when she finally filled him in on "mis planes" and discussed how they would navigate him being stuck between her and his family. But almost as soon as we see them start building emotional intimacy, it stops. That's what's frustrating.
David
I have also been struck by the (I think) two scenes where first Cande, and later Sev's lawyer were cutting up his food for him. To me this shows that the "all powerful" Sev is very dependent on others, and if this ever ceases for whatever reason, he will be a very vulnerable individual indeed.
David
The second time I made coque chasseur I used boneless chicken and cut it into large bite-sized pieces halfway through the process. This is so I can bring a batch to a casual party in the future where it can be served over wild rice in a bowl and people won't have to bother with knives because they're not sitting at tables.
I may need to go to a Mexican restaurant for lunch today and try eating with one hand. It's necessary research. I'll make the sacrifice for the patio.
Sara, eat the Korean with one hand and report back. The real question is if you can make a margarita with one hand....
And what was the point of the water rights and diverting the water if it was just going to be dropped? I guess it created tension at the time?
Not sure if you can make a margarita with one hand, but you only need one hand to throw back a shot of tequila. :)
Sara, yes on the tequila, but think we'd need to buy only screw top wines which is fine with me!
Urban, I like your question about the food. It seems like it would be both easier, and keep the food warm for longer, if Dominga just prepared things in a way where someone doesn't have to cut it up before Sev eats it. A petty revenge of Cande's? He gets steak every night, but it's gone cold by the time she cuts it up for him?
Also, I'm with y'all who are wondering what happened with the water crisis. It seems like they just did that to add tension, but expected us to forget that there was a legitimate problem that was affecting the town and the ranches--even ranches farther away from Santa Lucia. Sev decides not to divert the water from El Santuario to avoid disturbing Simoneta's final resting place, and suddenly the problem goes away? Did the burst dam just fix itself overnight? Or is the water shortage still on and everybody is ignoring it because of all the dramaaaaaaaah.
There have been plenty of times when a serious situation like this comes up in a show and even though everybody is working on solving the problem, that doesn't stop all the romance and the machinations of the villains, and it ends up getting solved/dealt with. If other shows can handle it, why not this one? They went kind of half-assed with this water subplot, and I'm disappointed, because they've done so well in other areas.
Al should plant squash. The neighbouring farmer who rents half of our acres just planted squash. I was surprised because the farmers in this area usually plant corn and soybeans. He told me that he sells trailer truckloads of squash to grocery stores. Squash has become very popular which seemed to surprise him as much as it surprised me. . Maybe melons are out , and squash is the in crop these days. Also, hit Renato up for a tractor or two.
How do the words for the actual fruits and vegetables in English and Spanish line up?
For example...in English, when I think of "squash" I think of something like spaghetti squash or butternut squash, but I don't think of pumpkin...in Spanish, does the word "Calabacín" or "calabaza" apply to all of those, some of those...?
And then with melons, when I think "melon" I'm thinking of cantaloupe, usually, unless I specifically say "watermelon." I'm actually not a fan of cantaloupe, but I love watermelon, so if I were to see a sign for "melón" I wouldn't care, but "sandía"? I'm all over that!
When I hear "squash" I think of the yellow variety and with a longer curved neck.
The Mexican restaurant where hubs and I go have a soup with calabacín that turns out to be zucchini.
Wordreference tells me that "spaghetti squash," which I have had, is "calabaza cabello de angel" (angel-hair squash) or "calabaza cidra" (citrus-colored squash?). But I always wonder if that's really the way people say it or which one is more common.
When I think "sqaush" I'm always referring to the yellow variety. If I mean anything else I'll add the modifiers "butternut", "acorn" etc.
Yes, squash is a fun word. Hey, it would make a good safe word.Speaking of which, I like to see the crackling chemistry between the leadsz but our leads are celibate. QTH
Squash is...well, I'm working on cultivating an appreciation. I'm not working very hard at it, mind you. Green and yellow zucchini, like Nina mentioned, always ends up being part of the mix when a restaurant serves "steamed vegetables" as a side. I haven't been impressed so far. Spaghetti squash I wouldn't have tried if I hadn't seen a video tutorial about how easy it is to microwave, but I don't see it as often in the grocery store. I think I've had butternut squash (which Wordreference says is both "calabaza" and "calabacín") in a soup before with pumpkin ("calabaza"). I think that's about the limit of my squash experiences :D Oh, and the zucchini bread...would that be "pan de calabacín"? "pan con calabacín"? does it not really translate?
I agree, susanlynn, field trips to El Santuario would be a BIG hit...lunch al fresco out by the waterfall, maybe a little swimming. She could totally clean up. And now that Dominga is living there, the lunch itself would be an attraction, too!
I have also seen fresh from the farm restaurants that use all local produce. Dom could turn out a great spread. I'd go. It would make Candygirl livid. Oh..!let's do that.
I was really upset at the lack of build time for A/C's lovefest, but now I'm just going to take it at face value: they say they love each other desperately, the story is built around it, so fine, I'll accept it as true. Next time around maybe they'll address the mental gymnastics Aldie does or doesn't have to go through to love Cris in a way that makes it clear that she has trouble with it. Otherwise, they could've just taken it out of the equation entirely and made it clear that she has no problem seperating Cris from his dad, but maybe as trouble dealing with all men on a sexual level. Eh. Who knows. I'll only make myself crazy thinking about it.
I felt for Pru at the beginning of this TN, but she's definitely earned her anvil. After the cruel way she dissed Tomas? I'll be glad when she realizes he's moved on with Lulu (which is where it seems like this is going).
Susanlynn, from your lips.... And Dominga knows how to cater a party, too. El Santuario could be a nice little event center.
Perfect for pictures, though.
And having Simoneta resurface wouldn't be the worst thing that could happen at a Santa Lucia wedding. Sev would hit on all the bridesmaids, Pru would start a food fight, Candela would slap the bride, Val would get the groom drunk....
That'll put a damper on any event.
Susanlynn seems all innocent, but drops the dry wit bombs all up in the patio.
