La Sombra del Pasado, Capítulo 86, 06/16/2015: Everyone’s just getting brought up to speed

Recap courtesy of HellaShelle

Main points:Lola and Irma tells Aldonza and Adelina Mari’s version of the story with Eman. They don’t believe it. Eman gets sloshed. The cops go to Joaquin looking for Flavia in connection with Adriano for Lardo’s murder. Sev tells Cris about Cande and PJ, but Cris doesn’t really care. Mari has regrets about what she did, but Val reinforces her evil ways. Silvia’s left SL! Cande tells Cris that Aldie and Renato kissed.

Fuller summary: Sev’s intense grossness is repeated, but apparently it’s just a power play for Aldonza’s benefit because after she walks away and he wipes his face disgustedly.

At the ribbon shop, Eman doesn’t know what Lola’s talking about. Lola says Mari told her everything. Eman says whatever Mari told her was a lie. He went to San Miguel alone and he hasn’t even seen or spoken to Mari yet. Lola doesn’t believe him and Eman asks what we’re all wondering: why does she believe Mari and not him? Lola says because up to now, Mari’s told the truth (oh sweetie, if you only knew. Eman finally understands why Uriel beat the crap out of him last night. He asks her to believe in him, but Lola refuses. She believed him before. What’s more, he gave Mari the Candy House and lied to her about it. She tells him to leave and not hurt her anymore. Eman finally takes her advice.

Pato is back from DF. He’s telling Ren about all the stuff he got done. Renato’s not paying attention. He’s slouched in his massive chair, contemplating his knee, so Pato also fills him in on the fact that his sister ran off with some pirates. They ate all the sandwiches in town, on the beach, under some palm trees. (To be clear, Ren doesn’t have a sister, right?). Renato finally snaps out of it and tells Pato about Aldonza and his fight with Silvia. He asks Pato to intervene. Pato agrees and goes upstairs to talk to Silvia, but she’s gone. All that’s left is a note on her bed.

Adelina and Irma are having coffee in a café. Adelina tells Irma about her decision to give Joaquin a chance. Irma shares her happiness, but then tells her about how Uriel’s changed since Lardo’s death. Now, he’s upset again because of Mari’s boyfriend, Eman. Aldonza walks up in time to hear this and asks what’s up with Eman (a little rudely, if you ask me). Irma fills them in on what supposedly happened between Mari and Eman, and how Uriel beat him up. Adelina and Aldonza can’t believe it.

Mari takes the Candy House to church, as promised. She bobs gleefully to the Virgin Mary on her way in and out.

Pato tells Renato that Silvia’s gone. They try to call her, but she turns off her phone. Ren reads her note.

Aldonza, Adelina and Irma go back to the shop, where Lola is still teary eyed. She confirms the story. She doesn’t mention the Candy House because she cannot hear me exasperatedly telling her to do so through time and space. Aldonza asks Lola if she asked Eman what was up, but Lola doesn’t want to talk about it. Aldonza insists he has a right to explain his side of the story, which prompts Irma to ask if Aldie’s saying Mari lied. Aldonza doesn’t know, but there are always two sides to every story. Irma says Mari would be incapable of lying about this because she’d be the one to come out looking badly, plus because it would upset her dad even more, plus because of what they just went through with Lardo’s death. Man, are I and U in for disappointment when the truth comes out. Aldonza maintains that this isn’t like Eman, but Lola says she has more important things to worry about and fills them in about her mom. She doesn’t know where else S/V lives or how to reach her. The others tell her not to worry, they’re sure S/V will contact her. Irma lets her off work to check it out and Al and Ade leave at the same time.

PJ comes into his office and sees the Candy House on his desk. Mari didn’t leave a note. PJ wonders who left it and why.

Hum tells Cris and Sev that things look good. The circulation is better and there are no signs of infection. He can go home in a couple of days, as long as he doesn’t pull any of his characteristic stunts. It seems like he’s out of danger of losing his leg, but Hum still wants to check on him carefully until his circulation is 100% back to normal.

Pru is primping in Val’s room while Val complains about Pru’s big mouth. Pru says she already apologized. She didn’t mean to say anything, it just came out. Val says it better not “just come out” that she’s expecting Lardo’s baby. Val’s annoyed because she’s been banned from Cris’s room while Aldonza roaming about, waiting to pounce. Pru tells her not to worry. Soon Cris will only be thinking about her and…his baby.

Cris tells Sev how worried Cande was about him running around with S/V. Sev says that relationship is dead and she won’t bother them again.

It’s Bible study time! Lulu wraps up a reading and Pru invites Tomás to share something he found. Apparently, it’s the Song of Solomon. He reads the passage, with what seems to be heavy extrapolation on his part. His mom and Marga seem to think it’s lovely.

Cris and Sev fill Cande in on Cris being out of danger of losing his leg. Cande says that Sev can leave then. Sev says he’ll leave when he wants. Cris tries to cut off their sniping, asking what the deal is. Sev tells him about Cande’s inscribed picture of PJ. Cris says he knows about that and doesn’t think it’s scandalous. Sev says no it’s not, but to clear it all up, he went to talk to PJ. Cande is mortified and leaves to get some fresh air. Cris thinks it’s a little ridiculous that his dad is making a big deal of this, given the state of his and Cande’s relationship after all these years. Sev says he doesn’t like to learn about things he should’ve known long ago.

Uh oh. Eman is drinking again and his and Lola’s old theme song is playing. He’s just about at the bottom of a bottle and asks the world at large why? Why him? Why him?! “I didn’t give her the Candy House. Why did you do this to me?” he implores. We don’t know if he’s asking Mari, Lola or God.

Lola rings the bell at her mom’s house and jumps up and down, trying to see in the windows.

Cande goes to church. She sees PJ and reaches for his face, to caress his bruise, but he, of course, steps back. Cande apologizes for causing him problems with Sev, but PJ says she’s not the cause. Sev doesn’t hate him, but what he represents. Cande tells him he’s no better; he provokes Sev. PJ says maybe that’s true, because he certainly hates what Sev represents (you know…evil). The worst about it is that she, Candela, has let herself be arrastrada (=dragged) along by Sev. He says leaving him a Candy House bribe won’t work, but she tells him she didn’t bring him anything. She apologizes again and leaves.

The police dude has gone to Joaquin’s house looking for Flavia. He heard she was running around with Adriano, and he has a warrant for his arrest for he murder of Abelardo Lagos. Joaquin doesn’t know where she is; she left their son with him and hasn’t been in contact.

Sev is reliving S/V’s murder while Cris sleeps. A knock at the door wakes him up. It’s Mel. Sev is rude, but Cris invites Mel in. Cris suggests that Sev go get some air, like Cande. Sev concedes. Mel begs for forgiveness, but Cris tells him that, of course, it’s not his fault and he’d do it again. Mel gives him his escapulario, which Dom sent. Cris asks him to give Aldie a message: that he loves her, and is always thinking about her. He knows she feels the same way. And no matter what happens, what’s between them will never be destroyed.

Cris’s message becomes a voiceover as Aldonza visits Ray’s grave. Afterwards, she says that if Ray were there, none of this would be happening. She tells Ray that she knows he’s her dad and asks that, wherever he is, he help her to prove it.

Lola is waiting for Sev in his office and demands to know where S/V is. Sev says if she didn’t leave word, it’s because she doesn’t care about Lola. Lola insists that S/V was too sick to bail like that. She mentions the baby and Sev snaps that she’s getting on his nerves with this! Lola jumps, but doesn’t back down. If he doesn’t answer, she’ll go to the cops so they can look for S/V. Cande has arrived just in time to hear this. She agrees with Lola, demanding that Sev answer. Sev repeats that S/V bailed and all he did was help her leave. He insists that S/V abandoned Lola, just like before, and was only in SL for him and his money, etc. Cande backs him up, driving Lola to leave. Sev threatens her grandparents as she does. Cande demands to know where S/V is so she can be prepared.

Aldonza is looking at a picture of her dad. Little Ray pops his adorable head around the door frame. Aldonza gets hugs and kisses (it’s super cute). Ray asks who the guy in the pic is and Aldonza tells him. Then he asks where his mom is and when she’s coming (poor baby!). Aldie doesn’t know.

Sev tells Cande he was got S/V out of SL; that’s what he was doing all yesterday. Flicking his talisman, the gold lighter, he assures Cande that S/V isn’t having the baby because he bought her off. She won’t bother them anymore. Cande’s surprised b/c S/V seemed ready to use the baby to make Sev do what she wanted, but she eventually accepts his answers.

Joaquin and Adelina are walking along the land. Ade has just filled Joaq in on the Eman situation. Joaq doesn’t believe it either. They need to talk to Eman, but they don’t know where he is. Joaq thinks he has an idea of where he might be though…

He’s right, Eman’s still getting drunk.

Sev and Cande discuss keeping Lola quiet. Sev says Cande should handle it cuz she has more influence with Dom. Cande asks why he’s not with Cris and he answers that he forgot he had a meeting with the engineers to fix the water problem. He left Cris with Mel, which pisses Cande off. He asks where she’s been all this time. She tells him she was around, taking a break from him, like she said. Sev takes a call from the engineer and is pleased.

Mari and Val are in a Witch Training Meeting. Mari doesn’t know how she got to this point. Her dad really beat Eman up bad. Val says that if she feels this way, she better tell the truth now. After all, the worst that can happen is that she becomes the harpy of SL, gets kicked out of her house, and winds up being the maid of honor at Eman’s wedding to Lola. As expected, this strengthens Mari’s resolve. Lola will never have Eman! He can date anyone but her. Her work done, Val leaves to go back to the clinic.

Joaq fills Ade in on the Flavia/Adriano criminal situation. He could’ve told the cop she was in San Miguel when she gave Ray back, but he’s trying to protect her and Ray. Now he’s regretting it, because if the police are right, she’s living with a murderer! Adelina tells him not to beat himself up. She’s also had to tapar(=cover) certain things about her sister to protect Aldonza.

Candela’s going back to the clinic, but she has to make a stop first. Dom asks her if something’s wrong with Lola because it’s weird she would leave work early just to ask Sev about Cris’s health. Cande says it’s not weird b/c Cris and Lola are good friends. She puts off more questions and leaves.

Mel visits Aldie at El Santuario to give Aldie Cris’s message. Aldie is delighted and gives Mel a big hug and cheek kisses to pass back to Cris (it’s pretty cute). Mel tells her Cris wants her to call him; he has his cell now. Aldie whips out her cell to call him immediately.

Val is visiting Cris (way to stick to your guns, Hum). She doesn’t get why he’s still obsessed with Aldonza, knowing she’s his sister. Cris says that’s not confirmed yet. Besides, his feelings won’t change overnight. Val says she gets it; she feels the same way about him. She can’t get it out of her mind that right now, they would’ve been married, and possibly even starting a family (she’s way more subtle with him than with Mari). Cris’s phone rings and he answers. It’s Aldie. Cris tries to keep his answers brief and generic because Val’s there. Aldie knows he’s never alone, so she’s not offended. Then, weirdly, when Aldie says goodnight, Cris tells her he’ll sleep like a baby and dream of angels after her call, totally giving away who it is to Val, who leaves.

Outside of his room, Val runs into Cande, who asks what’s wrong because Val is all teary eyed. Val tells Cande about the call. Cande tells her not to worry; she’s got another ace up her sleeve.

Cris heads Cande off about the phone call. He already knows what she’s going to say: Val’s so hurt, Aldonza’s the worst, etc. Cande agrees then plays her ace: while he’s been in here, fighting for his life and leg, Aldonza’s been making out with her lawyer friend!

Gracias, HellaShelle! You spun boredom into snark on this one. I'll be back for more comments later, but for now I'll just say that I'm disappointed that Em is rewriting the old saying...it's not "otra vez el burro al trigo" it's "otra vez el Emmanuel al tequila."

Thank you, Hellashelle!

Lola inches closer to the top of Sever's problem list, and that's not a good place to be. Just ask Padre Sixto, Lardo, or Simoneta. Hopefully, she'll have Padre J's luck if Sever decides to go after her. But he's threatened her abuelos, and they are much more vulnerable.

Thank you Eman for saying to Lola what we have been saying. I was very glad to see Al, Ade, and Joaquin defending Eman as well.

Mean is very much his mother's son-- drinking away his sorrows. This can't end well.

Happy to see Silvia leave Renato and his jerk behavior goodbye. You go, girl!

Eman not Mean, is his mother's son. Oh, Tablet.

Thanks for posting, Diva!

It's funny, no one made any progress on any front last night expect Silvia, who we didn't see because she made so much progress, she got all the way out of SL! Silvia, you win last night's episode. Gold Stars for you!

Ray gets the Silver Star for being so unbelievably cute, it's not even funny. Pobrecito! Do you guys think he's young enough that if Flavia never came back, he'd mostly just forget her? I liked the scene with him and Aldonza. She would have made a good bid sister/cousin.

I really think they could've used Cris' leg crisis to show the love between he and Aldie. Instead, Aldie looks like a middle schooler with a crush and Cris is a college kid in love. Sigh. Missed opportunities.

They should stop dying Joaquin's edges, and making Adelina wear those horrendous shoes and just release their natural hotness. It's almost a crime that they don't. And WHAT was up with the suspenders last night?! Why? Just why?

That scene with Little Ray and Aldonza really was adorable. Seems like Flavia will be making an appearance soon, with all that talk about her by Ray, Jaoquin, Ade, and the police.

Morning Vivi!

The Monday night comments said it all: when the first thing the police ask you when you're asleep on a public bench is "are you drunk again?" then maybe you have a problem. I did feel bad for Eman asking why me, why me, because nothing in his life has been great. It hasn't all been horrible, but it hasn't been good either. When I think of how this could be playing out though, I'm just sad. This show is good and interesting, but it's like a great recipe made with crappy ingredients.

Yeah, Lola's moving up on Sev's list, but for now he seems to have turned that over to Cande. It was so disturbing to see that the most in sync couple last night was Sev and Cande. They discussed things, made plans, delegated tasks. Why do the most focused people never use their powers for good?

"And WHAT was up with the suspenders last night?! Why? Just why?" ha! Yes, why was he dressed like a lumberjack?!

I also laughed that you were yelling at Lola through the TV to tell them about the candy house...I was right there with you. Why do they never hear us?

Thank you hellashelle, appreciate this much.

"Flicking his talisman, the gold lighter" The little things that comprise the whole

If Cris goes nutty over Cande disclosing the kisses it is stupid because:

He slept in the same bed as Val and doesn't know what all they may have done
He hasn't been in the habit of believing what someone else tells him about Aldonza without speaking to her

Several sweet/cute/funny moments for me:

Of course little Ray, poor thing, and while I don't like his mama, he misses mama

Mari's moments at the alter, entering and exiting

Cande reaching for PJ's face

Giddy Cris & Aldonza chatting on the cell

Hell yes moments:

Silvia leaving without a word only a letter

Pissed me off a little moments:

Emanuel hitting the bottle, again

Aldonza's rudeness when she approached Irma upon hearing about Emanuel's folly

Pru & Tomas gleaning smut from a biblical passage during a study group and his mother present

Val's attitude period but particularly the last exchange with Cris

Here's an updated Candy House travel itinerary...

Mystery Man (the original maker? purchaser?) puts the ring and a letter inside and gives it to...
Marga, but we don't know if she ever found the ring and/or letter. She gave it to...
Lola, so that Lola would be able to give Em something way better than Mari's stinky chocolates. She gave it to...
Emmanuel, who made the mistake of stashing it in his closet, where...
Pru got her hands on it, claiming it in the name of having to put up with Em in her house. But once everyone started looking for it, she took it over to...
Tomas, who was supposed to hide it, but instead put it up on Ebay. He hid it in his closet and when...
His mom came in to clean, she took it and gave it to...
The church for the raffle/fundraiser where...
Silvia and Renato jointly won it. But then Renato started acting all un-lawyerly, so Silvia gave it to...
Ray and Joaquin, where it might have stayed, had they not left it in the park after Ray fell, where...
Irma and Uriel found it and took it home, intending to have Padre J help them track down the real owner, except that...
Mari deputized herself to take it to Padre J, with a brief stop to torture Lola along the way, and dropped it off on…
Padre J's desk without any explanation.

And there it will stay until he figures out what to do with it.

Thank you again, HellaShelle. It really was an excellent recap.

Hi, HellaShelle, loved your iteration of last night's goings on, and your little quips to keep it spicy.

"Sev says the relationship is dead and she won't bother them again." He's half right.

The Bible study passage is one that allegorically compares the love of Isrealites toward God with the love of a bride and groom for each other. It has many very sexually suggestive passages in it.

The scene with Cande and PJ in the church implies to me that she is going to get a salvation of some sort.

The interaction between Aldonza and little Ray really showed her motherly capabilities, just like Ad. I wonder how this gene skipped Aldonza's mother?

I think Eman's drinking will evaporate when he ceases to be attacked on so many fronts, but it is disturbing to think that this is the way he copes with stress.

Thanks again, hellashelle. Really liked this.

David

Tofie - Gracias. I see you're with me on the talisman. Moments like that really make me hope that the newcomers are paying attention. That man really takes a character and crafts it, giving it depth and dimension. He takes it off the one dimensional page and breaths life into the three dimensional character. I wonder how much of that is written for him and how much is his input.

I'm so confused by the Cande/PJ thing. The way I understand it, they had a short lived, mild flirtation. PJ moved on and joined the seminary and Cande set it to the side and married Sev, but when she found out about Rob and Sev, she split her love between her son and breathed new, insane life back into the PJ never-really-was romance?

All he has to do is ask Lulu about it, and he'll know. Of course, Silvia's not in SL to get it anymore, but Ren's still around. If Ren goes after Silvia, then I wonder if it's off to Pato next?

Thank you hellashelle! I've only got time for the short version today, but was glad you included:

"Sev tells Cris about Cande and PJ, but Cris doesn’t really care."

Because really Sev?

Your mother dated someone before she married me. Who cares? Glad Cris didn't.

Now I'm anxious to see his reaction to Cande's latest ploy. If this is what they use to drag out the plot, it's going to get old.

Loved your metaphor: "a great recipe made with crappy ingredients"

I was talking about the Candy House in that last part. Should've been "All PJ has to do is ask Lulu about it, and he'll know. Of course, Silvia's not in SL to get the Candy House anymore, but Ren's still around. If Ren goes after Silvia, then I wonder if it's off to Pato next?"

Hellashelle- You aren't confused. You have the Cande-PJ thing just right. There's nothing more to it than that, plus Cande and Sever's obsessions and our wild speculations.

Hi Sara - Thanks! lol, glad you popped it and liked the short version. That's why I do it (I'm way too wordy when given free reign.)

Yeah, all that angst and Cris is like "oooooooooook...this is important why?" Not that he wasn't all upset about it when he found out though, but I think that was more about Cande being a hypocrite.

Cris's face was carefully blank at the end of the episode. I'm with Tofie - inclined to believe that he'll wait to hear what Aldie has to say about it. Now that Silvia's not in town, it'll just be Cande's word against Aldonza's. I think Aldie will just tell him the truth, but it would be nice to see someone try to spread a rumour and just have it fall completely flat.

Maybe I should've said great ingredients with a crappy recipe? The actors, setting, music and production quality are all pretty good (some even great), but the script is lacking, and the direction isn't picking up that slack.

Both metaphors work. Some days it's the ingredients, some days its the recipe.

But for the most part it's a recipe that's hard to really screw up. I'm still enjoying the experience. And honestly, since I've started watching TdA again I realize how little filler there is to this. I mean, there's some...but the story still moves along. Because it took TdA 6 days to do what El privilegio de amar did in 2.

It was HellaShelle's recap, and please let's not talk about anything that happens beyond this episode. Feel free to re-post without that.

Sara- I'm home today and watching TdA since you mentioned it. Only 13 mins in and SO much filler! And this is the beginning of the tn. But William Levy is hot, hot, hot, and can seduce the pants off anyone. I never mind seeing him do his galan thing.

Yes, Vivi! So much filler...but day-um smoking hot galan.

And great incidental music. Really some of my favorite.

La Diva- girl you crack me up with your question "and what was up with the suspenders last night, "why, just why" why is he dressed like a lumberjack?" Hahahahaha!!!!!! LOL!!!!!!! Im at work laughin about this. Im gonna stop and get back to work.

Again, that was HellaShelle, who I thank profusely, if not eloquently, for writing this recap. I merely expanded on the question.

Thanks so much , hellashelle, for another rousing recap.

I was about to comment that I thought this tn has good ingredients and someone is not bring careful with the recipe..not carefully measuring and mixing like my mother-in-law did to consistently produce her many delicious dishes.

I am concerned about good people turning against good people now. I am referring to Uriel punching and kicking Eman and then usually sweet, gentle, compassionate, understanding Irma leaving him lying in the street. I hated that scene. Poor Eman and Al have endured so much . They have certainly paid for the hatred that others felt for their flamboyant, free spirited mother.

As to the suspenders, my tell, wiry farmer dad had to wear them to keep his pants up while running around the farm. Otherwise, he woukd have lost his pants.

Well, time to get my fingerprints taken and my criminal history form submitted so that I can continue to teach at the college.

Guessing here, but I bet the actor uses the lighter and opening it with one hand to flesh out the character. He usually does it as run up to a threat so this seemed a bit out of place because Cande was there but with some thought not really. He was reliving the murder.

I keep thinking there is more to the Cande/PJ thing. They knew each other since they were children, very well. It seems Cande misunderstood what the future would be between them but I wonder was there ever reciprocal feelings or could PJ have considered a future with Cande, some misunderstanding squelched them, and it made the decision to join the priesthood easy for him.

''Tell''..should have been ''tall''...I guess that I have been listening to too many people with Scottish accents recently.

Good luck, Susanlynn, but I have a feeling you won't need it!

I think Uriel and Irma's behavior is at least consistent, even if it's troubling. They're still emotionally raw from Lardo's death and Mari pushed their buttons. I'm glad Irma realizes that it's still not ok for Uriel to behave that way, and I guess she was more concerned with keeping an eye on Uriel and keeping him from hurting Emmanuel further than in getting Emmanuel some help.

Why can't we take Padre J at his word about what happened between him and Cande? He's nit the kind of person to lie. This is the translation that Cathyx gave us yesterday of what PJ said:

"Before I entered the seminary, there was a true attraction between Cande and me. Al says, you had a relationship? and he says, don't make it out to be anything, it wasn't anything serious. Neither she nor I were the same people as we are now. She was completely different then, and then he tells Aldonza to not speak about this again."

Not, not nit. :)

I guess that I am angry that witchy , bratty Mari caused her parents whom we consider good characters to hurt another good character. I am used to the bad characters hurting the good ones, but seeing good characters manipulated into hurting other good characters is frustrating.

As to Candy and padre having different viewpoints as to what happened between them, I have seen that happen to people in real life. I believe that we each have our own reality.Even witnesses to the same event see that event differently.

I don't think PJ has lied but the whole Cande/PJ thing has trickled out. Drip, drip, drip. We're this far into this thing and Aldonza & I just find out some little something was between them, not love but something, from his perspective, then he shuts it down. While I can understand how his comment on the back of the photo could be misinterpreted they were more than acquaintances. I want a prequel.

Hellashelle, you rocked this! Your recap was much more interesting than the actual episode. Maybe I was zoning out, but I like your version of things better!

It seems to me we could sub-title this TN now "Much Ado About Nothing". Some of the tragic, TA-DA moments and arguments make me want to do a Cris with "So what?".
Half of the angst and arguments would be over within a few minutes in the real world because it's not worth getting worked up over. Maybe it's life in the boring "back woods" of SL. Get over it people.

But I do agree, all this Cande/PJ stuff has me head-scratching. Seems like it's such a stupid thing to put into the mix now and having Sev getting all worked up. And don't know about others, but most teenage boys I know wouldn't sign the back of a picture to someone as "Beautiful" who they were just buds with, unless Padre was a real smooth mover back in the day. Sorry--I'm still doing the wishful thinking that he turns out to be Cris' daddy-O to make the Allie/Cris hookup more palatable.

SOOOOO done with Lola. If anyone needs to be put at the Time Out table.

So Sylvia leaves, Ren will realize how much he misses her, etc. etc. Pink bow??

Has Cande seen that Petrified Candy House? Connection--candy house, Cande--now it's with PJ, what's inside?...grasping I know.

Daisynjay

Has there ever been another tn in which an item went from one character to another like the candyhouse has ? I hope that there was a real reason for this device and that the writers will explain the mystery of the candy house in the end. If not..QTH ????

Vivi - I'm willing to take him at his word, it's just confusing how he could have thought it was something so insignificant he thought he should remind her of who he was when he saw her, signed her picture that way (I too wondered if she wrote it on there for a second), while she's been carrying a huge torch for him for close to 30 years. I'm scratching my head over how nutty our Cande-bar is more than wondering if PJ's being honest.

Susanlynn - I could see the suspenders as a functional thing, but it was jolting because a few nights ago they had Joaquin, without hair dye, hanging with E in a bar, then suddenly suspenders and grays hair. It seemed like a really heavy handed attempt to age him (I don't know why they try, the ages on this show make almost no sense).

I do have vague misty memories of jr. high and high school shenanigans and...is it possible that Jeronimo wasn't the one who gave her that picture, or wrote on the back of it? It seems like just the kind of thing Val or Mari would do, to give her the picture and say that Jeronimo has a thing for her and then giggle at poor Cande making eyes at him. Maybe Cande had her own version of a Val or a Mari back then and never found out that it was all faked.

Word...if the candy house mystery is never addressed, I'm going to be seriously annoyed. That had better be something that was planned all along!

Have you ever met a Latin man? My junior high boyfriend from Mexcio wrote me mushy flowery notes all the time. Heck, calling someone bonita is not that big of a deal. I think that time Padre came back to town and asked if she still remembered him it was a rhetorical question. Just like if you had been away from your hometown for 10 years and ran into an old friend you hadn't been in touch with all that time. It wasn't really a serious question. We know Cande, Ray, and Jero grew up together on neighboring lands, and Cande also has pics of Ray.

A great recap Hellashelle---Mari and Val are in a Witch Training Meeting made me chuckle. It's sad but true, young witches in training.

While he's been in here fighting for his life and leg, Aldonza's been making out with her lawyer friend! Oh Cande you're so bad. Are you the president of the Santa Lucia's Witches Club?

Slow? boring? filler? Funny thing is that I never feel that way. I guess that it's because that I like the stories so much and get caught up in them that I never feel that way. Gringo the super fan I guess that one could say.

The previews looks like the water diversion is working and Simonita is discovered.
Lola will for sure go to the police. I can't wait for tonight. Not only the body discovery but I just get the feeling that Witch Val is going to be playing her ace card soon. I'm counting the hours to must see tv.

You are so right , Vivi. I had a young guy from Mexico a few years ago who called me "Angel" and more than one student who would say "I love you'' instead of what I know they really meant which was ''I like/respect/appreciate/am grateful to you.'' We are used to American men who tend not to be so flowery in their compliments. I had a young guy from Peru who worked in a restaurant and asked me why his boss told him not to keep telling the waitresses how beautiful they were. He did not get the sexual harassment aspect of his sincere compliments. Maybe padre was just a romantic young hombre who appreciated a pretty girl , and Candy took things much more seriously than he intended.

Hey, I'm a witch and I don't act like that!

Gracias, Hellashelle! Will go back and pick up comments in a bit. Thank you so much!!

Man! They are frustrating the stew out of me this whole week! It's like we're at a concert where Sev is the lead vocalist and Cande, Val and Mari are the back up singers! Hell Boy and the Hos or something! I wish I was clever enough to throw out a few verses!

So is Cris going to swallow this latest lie the same way stupid Lola did! I wish they'd just let her be involved in the story of what haappened to S/V because her "relationship" with Eman just steams me. So tired of these idiots believing the people who want to break them up from their beloved! Cris, don't you be one of these idiots!

Val says it better not “just come out” that she’s expecting Lardo’s baby. Now THIS would be the only welcome words I can think of coming out of Pru's foul mouth! That would make up for 95% of the frustration I've felt this week.

Thanks, again, Hella! :D

Vivi/Susanlynn - Good points. Besides which, Mari thought she was getting married after a beer, so maybe Cande wasn't so far off. Thanks guys!

Gringo- I did not find this episode boring.

We were just speaking about how Sim/Viv's disappearance should raise questions, and boom, Lola is all up in Sever's face questioning him and threatening to go to the police.

We were just talking about how Lola should trust Eman above Mari, and boom, he says the same thing to her.

The police made the Adriano-Flavio connection while we weren't looking and when we weren't expecting it. More trouble for Sever if info from Joaquin helps the police find Adriano more quickly.

We talk about how Silvia shouldn't put up with crap and leave, and boom, she's written a letter and left SL in the dust.

Those are plenty of developments in my book. (Especially after seeing the snooze worthy TdA today.)

LOL Lila!!! Hellboy and the Hos! Genius! That needs to be on Naughty Melon shelves coming soon!

I was just explaining to my friend what I'm doing and she burst out laughing. She said when we were all still in school together and I was watching TNs, the romanticism was my most used selling point! Now we both want to know when I got so cynical that instead of swooning over the romantic notes, I wonder if the lady wrote them to herself.

Thanks, Kat. I will try to read this later.

Sorry I've not commented already, but I haven't been able to watch the episode because I'm having internet problems and I haven't read the recap yet. It seems that my modem is too old and there is "packet loss" that could also be due to other things. My cable company is sending a technician over on Friday with a new modem and a means to check other stuff like the wiring. That's why I've been having issues with online videos.

Which probably means that I had a virus clean-out job two weeks ago for nothing.

At least when this is over I won't have issues with Uvideos or any other video site. We hope.

The flowing is highly influenced by my having read a lot of articles about the so called "crisis de telenovela."

Yes, as far as action goes we are lucky. We don't wait long for anything to happen on any story.

We don't have a lot of fluff and every scene has some important detail (witness the traveling house.)

But there does seem like TNs of late have been kind of flat and lacking a certain yo no sé qué that makes them less compelling than the TNs of say 5 years ago. It feels like everyone is phoning it in. From set design to costuming to performances.

I'm inclined to think I am burned out on TNs, but then I'll watch a Chilean production or an older Televisa production and get that old feeling back.

Maybe it's just the melodramas because I do find the comedy I'm watching very enjoyable.

Ay de mí. That should have been "the following..."

I'm still putting it down to the constant rehashing of the same tired stories or older TN's that people are familiar with. If a version that is not that old was great, and they try to redo it already, more than likely the comparison comes off poorly no matter what the actors try to do. I'm finding myself burned out half way through these shoes often because I've already know the ending and not enough of a plot to keep me going. On a TN like this was the acting can knock your socks off and enjoy that part of the show, helps, but not all have that.

They need to look at some original stories or adaptation of novels...anything and stop with the cliched plot devices. We know we will get some, that's part of drama, but some TN's get to the point where the Bingo card is full half way through. You can just guess who will do what and happen to whom and sort of takes the fun out. I'd give anything to have a TN where we don't have a clue how it turns out until we hit the end episodes.

I will agree that Alexis Ayala and Padre J have been wonderfully portrayed and I love watching them. Not to mention the small parts like Lulu and Don Camilo.

And there have been elements I love and that will go down on my favorite moments list. Like when Sev went to El San to get the horse back.

HellaShelle - Thank you for the recap! Not only was it entertaining, but AT&T UVerse had no signal for the first 45 minutes of my DVR recording, so I would have been completely lost and in the dark about what transpired. I loved your entire paragraph about the Witches Training session. THAT's when the Univision signal finally came back on and my DVR had something to show me. Gah.

I don't know about recipe vs ingredients, but at least something happens on every episode! The remakes that are extended with filler and lame subplot additions (too many from Telerisa, lately) are intolerable. I never saw La Sombra's predecessor, El Manantial, but it was much beloved.

Having no idea if this version has any significant changes, but sometimes the director and/or producer can be the big difference in how the viewers receive a telenovela, or any type production. For example, Corazon Salvaje '93,Amor Real, and other greatly loved telenovelas wouldn't be the same with different actors, even if it had the same script, producer and director. JMHO of course.

I know it won't happen and she claims to have TWO other boyfriends, but I wish Lulu would become a love interest for Eman. Maybe she can lead him to the Lord and away from the bottle. A quiet, spiritual girl can be a latent ball of fire!

Or, maybe Lulu already is! ;D

Am I the only one wondering if one of her suitors is part of the Bible study? And if she's crushing on Tomas?

Um. She=Lulu.

Don't feel badly ya'll. I've watched Thai Lakorns for years and they tell the same story over and over too and use the same plot devices. Some of the better ones are traditional folklore but a modern setting. The comedies also use sound effects same as TN's.

What helps is if the casting done right and they bring it every night. My largest complaint with any of these is when a young boy or girl expects to carry a show just cause they are cute.

Sara, you are not alone in thinking Lulu has a reason and it ain't bible study. If it is Tomas, hate it for the girl.

Lulu deserves far better than Tomas.

Eli, thank you for Monday's recap.

Hellashelle, thank you for today's recap.

I think the editing of this TN is a major problem. There are huge gaps in the story everyday. The acting, etc. has been excellent so it must to be editors. At least that is my story and I am sticking to it.

Rosemary Primera

I agree, Rosemary. I think Diva even mentioned last week that the editing was weird.

But Univision might be to blame. They aren't wholesale chopping like they once were, but sometimes it's like they cut to commercial mid-sentence. Remember bumpers? I kinda miss those.

Hella, thanks so much for the double recap, the short and long version. So glad you put emphasis on Mari's annoying behavior in the church, "Mari takes the Candy House to church, as promised. She bobs gleefully to the Virgin Mary on her way in and out." That happy, pony tail bobbing salute to El Señor really was an insight into her basic unregretful, uncaring personality. Please, please don't give my Pato to Mari, that will ruin El Fin for me.

La Verdad Oculta was the only recent novela that kept us guessing till the end. Who would have the custody of the little garbage bin toddler? Everything else has had a cookie cutter, bright blue bow ending.

Hey David, keep the serious sience and biblical information coming, you might get a free drink or two on the patio before this is all over! Gringo, you too. Still thinking about how I can adopt your body mechanics lifting ideas into my real life.

Thank you Hellashelle, I finally got home and had time to watch. I got a new dvr and I don't know how to watch it with cc's. Anyone know?

I was flicking through the channels last night and I just so happened to pause on La Sombra Del Pasado, lol, and Mari was on the screen. I asked my husband how old he thought she was. He said in her 40's.

Cathyx- Oh, no! Ouch! That poor actress- she's only in her 30s. I guess that means she can start playing the mother of an adult.

cathyx - LOL I agree! "Mari" looks old enough to be Lola's mother.

Yikes! Note to self: pony tail ages you.

Diva - Thank you for the updated Candy House travelogue!

I have long wondered if she and Alexis Ayala were a package deal. Did he tell them he would not do the deal unless his wife had a semi-important role? There has to be a back story because she is so wrong for the part.

Rosemary Primera

I know Renato's world has fallen apart so I'm not going to say anything about his pinkish, shiny satin shirt that would have most prospective new clients leave his office and look up "abagodos, Santa Lucia" on their cell phones.

Omg Sandy! I noticed that shirt, too! Sooo disco. I could just hear the strains of the Bee Gees and "How Do You Mend a Broken Heart."

doris, I'm pretty sure the actress that plays Mari is a year younger than the one who plays Lola. Both are a lot older than their characters but the actress playing Mari looks a lot older than her actual age and could easily play early to mid 40s with the right clothing/hair/makeup and I don't think people would blink twice.

"...and Val calls him abogaducho (dirty little lawyer.)"

Sara - I forgot to thank you for that one in your recap last week! So can we presume the direct translation is abogadouchebag? ;-)

Ha Sara! Even our handsome Renato can't pull off a " Saturday Night Fever" shirt like that one!

Wah! Ren's pink "Stayin' Alive" shirt was in the lost 45 minutes on my DVR. Maybe I'm glad I missed that? Appropriate punishment to wear at the Time Out Table on the Patio.

It was the scene where Mari and Val were talking. After he told me how old she looked, I told him that she was supposed to be the same age as Val, early 20s. He said they didn't even look close in age.

Well played doris. Abogadouchebag.

No Sandy he cannot. I'm not sure anyone can.

Well, she did look pretty old of that scene, cathyx. Maybe the crying didn't help.

Thinking about it, I think Renato does have some kind of "night fever" after watching him roughly tap his head while talking to Sylvia the other day. Glad she split.

I'm just glad Renato chose the slim fit with that shirt, it would have looked worse with more of that fabric draping around his waist.

I was trying to be polite by not mentioning that embarrassing shirt. Oh, Renato.

Renato already has the 70's hair going on, why not a shirt to go with it?

HellaShelle, thanks so much for the recap! Some may say there's not alot going on but I am enjoying the heck out of watching it anyway.

Cande: couple of nights ago, Cande told Dominga "Jeronimo had his own reasons for breaking off our relationship". Maybe not the church; maybe Jeronimo fell in love with someone else?

Don Camilo: I love this big guy!

Lulu: Still wonder why we saw her crying in the church office in that early episode. Glad she is getting more screen time.

Renato: Too many people start saying 'poor Renato's pink shirt', 'poor Renato's hair', 'poor Renato looks like Barry Gibb',etc, not a good sign for 'poor Renato'.

J in Oregon

Maybe he(renato) should put on some suspenders with that shirt. You know, dress it up. Hahahaha!!!LOL!!!

".... 'poor Renato looks like Barry Gibb',...."

OMG, J in Oregon, I had food in my mouth when I read that and.....
(note to self: do not eat while reading Caray comments!)

I am REALLY feeling cheated by not seeing that shirt. Wah! The one night my cable provider couldn't get a signal . . .

I would like to go on record and clarify that I did not say Renato looked like Barry Gibb. I just said I was reminded of a Bee Gees song. Cathyx brought up the hair...and she's right. I googled Barry Gibb. Poor Renato is rocking the 70s hair.

;-)

Doris-If I could I would try to get a screen shot, but sadly I am not computer literate enough. The shirt was actually kind of the color of the background of your avatar.

Sara LOVE IT~!!!! Having major memories of Jimmy Fallon/Justin Timberlake skits on SNL!!!

Gads.... now "Night Fever" has become an earworm in my head...... aaaaack.

I've never seen those skits. I'll have to look for them.

Don't blame me. It's Poor Renato's fault (because I will refer to him only as Poor Renato from now on.)

Yall leave Renato alone now, he's had a ruff time of it, po baby. He's been rejected by the love of his life, one of his best friends got sick of him an left, and he's had a wardrobe malfunction, and to boot a bad hair day.:-)

Awwwwwwww, he'll get over it. He should burn that shirt. Po baby:-(
